CircuitMOM returns to the White Party Palm Springs Stage

2023 marks the 25th Anniversary of drag superstar persona CircuitMOM. And to celebrate she is returning to White Party (her last appearance was in 2006) for both the Friday night party “Fluidity” with two of her favorite DJ’s, Dan Slater and Tom Stephan bringing some classic Chicago House Music vibe to the stage.  Then, she will be channeling her inner “cool mom” vibe celebrating CircuitMOTHER’s Day Sunday with a dazzling pool party “SOAKED” and her first time working with DJ Nick Stracener. Get ready for a poolside kiki like never before.

“Being invited to be a part of this epic and historic weekend is a career high point and I am ready to take in every glorious minute from beginning to end. There is nothing better than being able to connect with the audience in person and between Friday night’s “Fluidity” party and being the lead in pool party to Sunday’s grand finale, I am beside myself with glitter-covered excitement,” says CircuitMOM, the alter-ego of Matthew Harvat.

Harvat is principal and lead designer of his own Chicago based event company, CircuitMOM Productions, and along with his business partner Edwin Martinez, have transformed both public and domestic spaces for more than twenty-nine years. Their event production includes such major venues as the House of Blues Chicago, the Aragon Ballroom, the Uptown Theater Grand Lobby, Sidetrack Video Bar, Chicago’s Museum Of Contemporary Art, Venue610, ABC 7 Chicago, Windy City Live and countless other performance spaces locally and nationally where they have worked as artistic directors, actors, performance artists, production managers, television producers, podcast talent, DJs and so much more.

“For our 25th year, we have really tried to branch out and create some fun not only in Chicago, but in so many other cities and new venues. Here’s wishing everyone a safe, successful, glitter covered, sweaty dance floor, gorgeous year. Make sure you come shake it with me once or twice and share a hug or two. We need to uplift and support each other these days, and our dance floors are the perfect place to make that happen,” says Harvat.

In addition to event production, Harvat has been DJing for more than 30 years, including headline appearances in Vancouver, Prague, Miami, Chicago, Orlando, Toronto, and Hollywood. Harvat simultaneously developed the drag persona CircuitMOM, which has become an iconic presence at dance music festivals, night clubs and circuit parties around the world. Gay and straight audiences alike embrace their unique combination of over-the-top productions and performances that fuse glamour, wit, and audacity.

So, how did it all begin? Harvat tells GED Magazine, “It all started as a required participation, employee charity drag show way back in (checking the year---1995, I think) at Roscoe’s-now world famous for their exclusive “RuPaul Drag Race” viewing parties. I was Jean Poole at the time, but while attending a circuit party weekend called “Hotlanta” in 1996, I randomly showed up on the dance floor carrying four pitchers of ice water (complete with plastic cups in the side pockets of my cargo pants because that’s what we wore to parties back then...shut it!) and a sexy, shirtless guy stopped me and said “Oh my god, you are our ‘circuit angel’ bringing us water!’ but his friend said

“No, that is our ‘circuitMOM’! (Referencing the old Koolaid commercials where the mom would yell out ‘Hey, Kids! Koolaid!’ and then the Koolaid guy would burst through the brick wall to the delight of all the children...ha!)”

Their creativity is irrepressible and the keen eye for fostering talent has also become a hallmark of their productions. Up and coming artists, DJ’s, photographers, dancers, actors, musicians, costume designers and more, have not only added their incomparable talents to countless event productions, but have become family and continue to work as a collective force to bring audiences the very best in entertainment. So, how have they kept the party going for 25 years?

“Thankfully, I have had amazing mentors my entire career that have coached me to be experimental and take chances. Tracy Young, Ralphi Rosario, Frankie Knuckles, Brett Henrichsen, David Knapp, Manny Lehman, Tom Stephan, Bodhi Calgana, Abel, and one of my best friends on the planet, Tony Moran, have all lifted me up. “

“So many amazing memories! Some highlights would be me being so nervous before an eight-hour DJ set for the 2009 IML closing party at the historic Excalibur Night Club in Chicago that I threw up in the DJ booth trash can right as my first song started. Once I got that out of the way, the night was amazing. In 2010, I DJ’d the IML “Victory Party” and the stars and energy just aligned with the sold out crowd. When my last song ended that night, the love I felt from that audience was so overwhelming, I burst into tears. There is nothing better than sampling a well-known beat or layering a vocal from one track over a different song and watching your dance floor giving you that “Hell YES, BABY” feedback.”

“I started building my brand in Chicago at Crobar with the help of Paolo Pincente and countless artists, and also landed headlining gigs for Black and Blue in Montreal, Toronto Pride, Vancouver Pride, Chicago Pride, Alegria Pride NYC and the epic White Party Palm Springs to name a few. Fast forward to Chicago’s Market Days 2017, when we moved our Saturday night party from House Of Blues (our home for the last 23 years) to The Aragon Ballroom, which is 4 times the capacity, and I finally had the opportunity to design my dream entrance for a show which involved me lowering myself 55 feet from the ceiling down to the stage in the middle of the audience, in the round with 10 dancers waiting for me. Hanging up there in the dark for 15 minutes, completely hidden, looking out over that crowd was very emotional and so much damn fun. Once my show mix of Tamia’s “Stranger In My House” started and the lights came on revealing my dangling self, hovering over the crowd, it was a life core moment I will forever be grateful for. All of that being said, being a part of two White Party events in 2023 is beyond humbling and I am ready to serve it up!”

Frieson started his career in 2018, debuting at the legendary Rich’s Houston nightclub where he is now based. Since his debut, Marti’s career has been consistently ascending, holding two residencies in two different cities: Houston (DNVRMX) and Miami (Score). You can also find him regularly on the roster for Industry Night Club and Mantamar at the most iconic gay beach in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. “I’m very passionate about things on stage and also behind the scenes. Both careersDJing and producing/promoting - have grown exponentially since I first started and I’m really proud to share with everyone the community that we’ve grown here in Houston with my brand @dnvrmx,” says Frieson in a recent interview with GED Magazine.

“ This will be my WPPS Debut!” exclaims Frieson. “I’ve always heard amazing things from friends that have attended over the years but never had that chance to attend as a guest. I’m defi-

nitely grateful to be a part of this year’s lineup. I’m planning on staying after my set at SOAKED! Pool Party on Friday, May 12th at the Hilton Hotel Palm Springs, to enjoy the weekend and get the full experience.”

Frieson’s sound is fresh, unique, and current, inspired from where you might least expect - film, hip hop, and pop culture. “I love playing tracks that have a fun and distinct beat or vibe. I usually balance this out with some moments of vocal remixes that everyone knows the word and can sing a long too.”

He is determined to be distinguished from other artists and is not afraid to push the boundaries of the genre. “My personal sound is completely different than other DJs because I take genuine joy in playing for the crowd. Each set of mine is unique because I’m sharing the moment with the audience that’s there. It’s not about me at all. It’s about the moment, the crowd, and the type of party we’re all at together. I take all that into account and then deliver my set with my interpretation. A lot of other DJs preplan their sets, which is safer and an lot easier, but for me almost everything is decided in the moment and organically - that’s what works best.”

Frieson recently played in Mykonos and Rio, and says it was a dream come true. He is looking forward to continuing his travels around the world and visiting Palm Springs.

Frieson’s physique obviously shows he visits the gym several times a week. His free time during the week is spent training, with short and intense sessions lasting about an hour. “I try to do my light cardio and abs in the morning to be productive and get my day started early. I like to do my weight training at night when the gym isn’t as busy. And a hot tub visit post-workout is a must.”

Frieson says to get ready for his White Party set, where he will be giving you all the circuit beats while throwing in his own flavor.

White Party Palm Springs 2023, is entering its unprecedented 33rd year in beautiful Palm Springs California.  Three days and nights provide party-goers with seven amazing parties (included in the Weekend Pass) featuring White Party‘s global DJ’s, world class recording artists, and amazing specialty acts, to keep you entertained non-stop all weekend long!

Giving Back Feels Good

The importance of giving back to your community can’t be understated. When you give back, you are directly bettering the lives of your friends, neighbors, and those in your community. Finding meaning by giving back to the community doesn’t just benefit others – it benefits you.

GED Magazine was founded, over 10 years ago, on the belief that while we ask for the communities’ business and support, it is our duty to provide support to them as well.

On the one-year anniversary of Ethyl’s Place Bingo at The Roost Lounge, we are taking a moment to thank YOU - our readers, advertisers, and supporters… it is because of you that we have been able to continue to give back to the community through non-profits and businesses that support and embody LGBTQ+ causes and principles.

Over the course of the last year, over $20,000 has been raised through Ethyl’s Place Bingo alone, to help support the missions of the following local desert nonprofits:

• Animal Samaritans

• Boys & Girls Club of Cathedral City

• Brothers of the Desert

• Cake 4 Kids

• Cathedral City Senior Center

• LGBTQ Community Center of the Desert

• Modern Men Coachella Valley Chorus

• S.C.R.A.P. Gallery

• Stonewall Ministries

• The Roost Foundation

• Tools for Tomorrow

We hope you will continue to support GED Magazine and its mission. Looking for more opportunities? Volunteer some time at the Community Food Bank and/or the Cathedral City Senior Center Food Pantry. Donate household, furniture, clothing, and other items to Revivals Stores (supporting DAP Health). Contribute school supplies for local children. There are so many ways to brighten your day… giving back feels good.

Prince Joshua Royalty is A Mindset

You may be familiar with Prince Joshua from his social media, his presence in LGBTQ nightlife, his appearance on Jonny McGovern’s GoGo for the Gold go-go boy competition, or from the recent splash he made from his entrance on For the Love of DILFs, the queer answer to a dating reality show that matches DILFS and himbos. (For those unfamiliar, himbos refers to an attractive but not very bright male.) Before you hit the cancel culture button, the term himbos on this show is actually used as a foil as we find out there’s more going on with the contestants than just a hot body. The show itself is very tongue-in-cheek, highly self-aware, and not only entertains but also surprises with moments of insight into issues like body positivity, ageism, and sex positivity that are currently hot topics in our community.

Like the show, Prince Joshua has a veneer of good looks and sexual energy. When you look further, you find there’s a lot more going on when you look at Joshua’s educated activism, especially when it comes to building bridges with our trans community. That peeling back of the facade was the reason Joshua did the show in the first place.

I wanted to show a side of me that social media doesn’t normally see. It’s hard for me to be vulnerable online, especially when I want everyone to know I’m a baddie. But I think the fact that I was able to open up and show another side of me will humanize me more to my followers and hopefully help them see me more for who I am.

In the course of the show, not only was Joshua able to delve into the lives of other members of the LGBTQ community he wouldn’t necessarily rub shoulders with, but he was also to find out more about himself.

I learned that it’s okay to process my feelings and let myself feel them. I also learned that it’s okay to let your walls down and to let others in, even if it means being vulnerable. We sometimes think we’re the only people experiencing different emotions and situations when others are also experiencing or have experienced the same thing and can help us process it. Taking others’ experiences and learning from them can really help your own growth and help you succeed in the future when put in a similar situation.

With the central themes of the show focusing on ageism, Joshua believes it is still a big issue within our community and hopes the audience sees a different generation of gay men in a new light. He also hopes himbos can get a better rap.

I myself would never limit who I love due to an age difference but know that others do. Something I always tell gentlemen when they tell me they’re old is “you’re only as old as you act.” If a guy focuses on the fact that he’s older than me, or brings it up multiple times in one date, it can be very annoying. We both obviously know the age gap and choose to be on the date with one another, so it shouldn’t matter. Whether they’re too young or too old it shouldn’t be about a number. As long as they are both consenting adults, if someone is making you happy, and you choose one another that’s all that matters.

I hope we help people stop being ageists, I hope they take the time to appreciate and understand that the guys on the show who are sex workers are just as deserving to find love as anyone else is. Everyone in our community deserves to share their story and find their true love.

Age has just been a number for Joshua who, as a young boy growing up in Idaho, came to terms with his sexuality early on. From there he would make his way to Arizona, on his own at 18, to discover who he was in the realm of life. There he would adopt his Princely name and fashion sense and create his own royalty.

Growing up, I had a very religious and conservative upbringing. Being very sheltered and being born in a small town I never even considered the thought that I was gay. During my junior year of high school I came out to my parents, with my sister Rose coming out as gay (and later as trans) we had a lot of long discussions with our parents on what our identity and sexuality meant to us. It took patience and love to come to the level of support that our family has for one another. I think the experience really shaped who I am today, carrying a lot of values from my upbringing but without the need for religion, just love.

Although I came out in high school, I tended to cling to the preppy stereotype and was always nervous to cause too much attention to the fact that I was gay. When I moved out of my parent’s house and to Arizona I felt so free. I was 18 and had just got my first big tattoo, as I secretly got the infamous crown tattoo on my right cheek when I was 17, I pierced my septum and began a new journey. I really came into my own by being surrounded by students who had just as much passion for their brands as I did. I really learned how to market myself and thus began styling everything I wore with my black and gold, medieval meets streetwear, influences. I played with makeup, began creating harnesses, and found confidence in myself that made me not care what anyone thought of me. From crop tops to black mesh, leather to lace, and gold or iced-out jewelry I was always one of the most extra people when walking into class, at a family reunion, and of course on my Instagram. That’s when I came up with my mantra “Royalty is the mindset you wear” because just like our style the mindset we choose to wear is how people will perceive us.

He earned his BA in fashion marketing. As much as his body would play a part in becoming a social media presence, so would his fashion. He fused fashion, his education, and social media to come into his own.

I am in love with being able to use fashion to take me to a new fantasy or moment. Styling outfits with different locations, sets, and edits can take people to another realm, it’s my favorite form of storytelling. Even seeing a collection go down a runway tells you a story of that person, their aesthetic, and their presence. It’s also an expression of how you feel, what you think, or what you stand for. No matter who you are, you choose fashion to represent you every day. That’s why I like to make every day my runway.

GEDMAG.com | 21

During my time studying fashion, I used the tools and techniques I learned to optimize my social media. I began posting frequently, styling myself, posing in different ways, and showing my different talents from dancing to hula hooping, and people started to eat it up. I continued to build from the username I had chosen @ThePrinceJoshua, and wear crowns, and gold, and started getting recognized as my handle. I then began working with different underwear brands, and rave brands, and hope to one day work with a clothing brand.

The word influencer has gained a love/hate connotation in the world of media. To Joshua, being an influencer is not just posting a thirst trap and watching engagement. He defines it as:

Being genuine and authentic to who you are and what you represent. I only choose to promote brands or sponsorships that I actually would suggest, wear, or use. Knowing when to say no to things is important in order to keep your brand’s presence consistent. I love to inspire others with what I post and tend to only follow accounts that personally inspire me. When creating a concept and executing it, nothing feels better than others commenting on how they were taken into that fantasy.

A true inspiration in Joshua’s life has been his sister Rose, the two of them showing both the gay and trans communities how we can come together to inspire change and understanding.

My sister, Rose Montoya, came out as gay before I did (she later came out as trans). While in high school she helped warm-up my religious family to having a queer person in our family. She really helped me find the confidence to accept myself and be myself. I had a lot of internalized homophobia and even had a short period when I wasn’t close to Rose because she was queer. When I told Rose I was gay, we both hugged each other and cried and then became each other’s biggest supporters. We had each other’s backs no matter what after that and would explain how at the end of the day love is more important than what we had been taught. For years I had been bullied by my peers, it seemed everyone knew I was gay before I did. Being told you’d go to hell for being gay, that you’ll have a hard life, or that it’s unnatural stuck in my mind during the times my peers would say that I was gay or called me a fag. Once I accepted that if I choose to be myself, I allow myself to be genuine in what I feel, and I choose to show love to others, no one can tell me I’m not worthy of love. I would tell my peers “yeah I’m gay so what? Not for your ugly ass!” and they’d leave me alone. I began showing fake confidence in who I was and it later became real confidence in owning the fact that I am unapologetically me.

Rose was the first person to help me understand the importance of gender identity, pronouns, and being aware of every group in the LGBTQIA+ community. Her series Trans 10 and the advocating she does for the queer community are incredible and I love how she so easily can help others un-

derstand how to be socially appropriate and aware. (Check out www.thetrans101.com).

How does Joshua think we can best support our trans family?

Standing up for them when they need it, and calling out transphobic behavior, even from the LGBTQIA+ community. This also means walking them to their cars at night, checking if they’re doing okay, and even just reaching out to tell them they have your support can mean so much. Our community is constantly fighting censorship on social media so it’s about sharing their posts, commenting (I mean actually saying something, not just emojis), saving, and liking their content especially when it’s an important message. It means signing petitions they post, donating if you can to their GoFundMe for gender-affirming surgery, and normalizing their experience.

Prince Joshua’s move to Southern California has been a whirlwind. As a major part of the Arizona nightclub scene as both a go-go and bartender, he packed his bags and came to Los Angeles, having to restart as a newbie, proving himself quickly.

I love how much bigger LA is - different opportunities are always one connection away. From being in Trinity the Tuck’s Femboy’s music video, to go-go dancing for Trixie Mattel, being a guest at Little Nas X’s birthday party, dancing on stage for the Boulet Brothers Halloween Ball, dancing on stage with Kim Petras, Ava Max, and so many other incredible artists, it’s been one amazing year.

The confidence we see from Joshua’s content and appearance as it relates to his body has not always been an easy journey. And wanting to be seen as more than just a himbo to the public eye, he sees the delicate relationship between growing his social media, pursuing his career, and being true to himself.

It’s an addictive thing, social media. The feeling of getting lots of likes and comments is something too many of us crave. Showing skin has always been an easy way for me to up my engagement, I think that’s why I began doing it. I grew up never being picked first, never being the cutest guy in the room, and never having the person I liked, like me back. After puberty, a lot of working out, and the confidence to be myself, I began getting a form of attention I wasn’t used to. I loved it. I love to show my progress but only post photos for myself and not what others want me to. It’s something most influencers struggle with, especially when trying to date someone. I try not to compare myself to others as I know with photoshop and genetics that no two people will ever look alike. I focus on wanting to be a better version of myself, that’s the only person I want to look like. There’s so much more to these Instagram models and influencers than what their body looks like, that’s something I’m excited for people to start seeing in the reality TV shows I’ve been a part of.

I love to combine my love for dancing, fashion, modeling, and sexual freedom. That’s what our profiles are made for,

GEDMAG.com | 23

to express ourselves. I do want to show more of my fashion style, creativity, and brand, but to produce new things costs a lot, and I’m not quite there yet. But something I intend to do is be more vulnerable and real with some of my content, not always focusing on my body. I’m going to continue designing, creating, and styling and you’ll definitely see more from me on my socials.

Despite his time looking for love on the DILF show, he is content as he is - single.

Right now I’m really focused on my happiness and love myself. I’m not looking for love, I’m just chasing my dreams and hoping the right guy comes into my life when I’m ready. I’ve taken lots of time to understand what it means for me to be a good partner and how someone can be a good partner to me. I hope to find someone I can grow with, support, feel supported by, and genuinely love.

And his Pride wish for our community this year?

My Pride wish is for all of us to stand together. Our spending power, voting power, and power of influence are so incredible, we must use these to our advantage to stop the hate and banning of drag queens, to stop the horrible bans and laws being passed against our trans community members, and use all of our talents and skills to show we are deserving of equal rights, bodily autonomy, and of course respect.

DAP Health: How the Valley’s Beloved Nonprofit Delivers Comprehensive Care to 10,000 of Our Neighbors

DAP Health is an internationally renowned, advocacy-based Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) based in Palm Springs. Its mission is to improve the overall well-being of the entire desert community — especially the disenfranchised who face disparities in accessing care due to sexual orientation, gender identity, race, or class — by making health equity and justice a reality.

“Health equity at DAP Health means no one ever wonders if they belong,” says CEO David Brinkman, “they just feel it.”

Founded in 1984 in the face of the HIV/AIDS crisis, today the nonprofit provides comprehensive, culturally competent, quality wraparound services that include primary and preventative medical care, HIV care, sexual wellness testing and services, gender-affirming care, dental care, mental health care, social services, affordable housing, and more. No one is ever turned away due to inability to pay.

The Three Cornerstones of DAP Health

Establishing Health Care Equity for All

No one should feel like an outsider when they see a medical or mental health provider. And no one should go without health care due to lack of insurance or inability to pay.

Ending Epidemics

Thanks to its proven success in working toward the end of the HIV epidemic, DAP Health has been able to address new community health crises — whether COVID-19 or mpox — headon, in a swift and successful manner.

Addressing Behavioral Health Challenges and Addiction

DAP Health provides stigma-free individual and group therapy to address myriad mental health needs, including recovery from addiction.

Vision Forward

Vision Forward is DAP Health’s 10-year strategic plan that will see the organization grow from serving 10,000 individuals annually today to 25,000 patients and clients a year by 2025. So far, this broad-minded expansion has encompassed:

• The purchase of the Annette Bloch CARE Building and the opening of three primary care clinics within.

• The opening of the Orange Clinic and Yellow Clinic at the main campus in Palm Springs.

• The opening of a DAP Health sexual wellness clinic in Indio.

• Groundbreaking on Vista Sunrise II, which will boast 61 new units of affordable housing, to be completed in 2023.

Still to come is the Tenet Health Pavilion, a structure that will bridge the Barbara Keller LOVE Building and the Annette Bloch CARE Building, and which will include:

• A transit- and pedestrian-friendly pathway.

• A central registration area for all patient services.

• A café open to the public that will be staffed and managed by clients of DAP Health’s Return-to-Work Program.

Some of the most popular assistance DAP Health offers to members of the LGBTQ+ community are HIV and STI testing, prevention, and treatment — not to mention the services of its on-staff team of PrEP navigators. All PrEP visits and lab work done at DAP Health’s sexual wellness clinics in Palm Springs and Indio are free of charge to all patients.

DAVIS There’s Always Time for Kindness By Ethylina Canne
MRS. KASHA
Photo courtesy of Mrs. Kasha Davis

Many years ago, in the dressing room of Toucan’s Tiki Lounge, I heard the name Mrs. Kasha Davis. When her name was mentioned and I got word she would be coming to perform in the Springs, every girl said to me “Just wait until you two meet! You gals are like twins!” I thought to myself, a twin…from Rochester, NY? That simply can’t be. Well, it simply CANNE be! After meeting Mrs. Kasha Davis, I’m here to tell you, we couldn’t be more similar in so many ways. We became fast friends, and have been able to collaborate on virtual shows, in person shows, and have even been able to produce our own show here in Palm Springs. We are TRULY sisters from another mister.

When all the news started coming out about the banning of drag queens around children in Nashville, and that 13 other states have similar bills on the horizon, I immediately thought of my friend Kasha, who is like THE BEST DRAG QUEEN to interact with children EVER. I was lucky enough to catch up with her between her Brunches, Bingos, and Story Time hours to chat with her about her views on the current state of things and what’s going on in her busy FABULOUS WORLD.

Did you ever in your lifetime think we would be witness to a ban on drag queens due to the safety concerns of children?

No I didn’t. But to be honest with you I never thought we’d have marriage equality or see Drag to be such a mainstream form of entertainment. We must be prepared to take the bad with the good and in true form DRAG QUEENS are prepared for the fight! The fact that we are out, loud and proud is ruffling feathers of the ultra-conservative and let’s face the FACTS it’s a distraction from the real issue: Gun Control/regulation. PERIOD. This country has seen no, ZERO, NADA, “deaths by drag” but gun violence is the number one killer of youth 18 and under in this country in 2022 over cancer and car accidents!

What do you think is the driving force for multiple states jumping on the bandwagon to ban the LGBTQ+ people?

Fear! You and I both know that fear is the underlying emotion for anger and these people are mad! Mad that drag performers and our Trans brothers and sisters are coming out of closets and into libraries, brunch venues, painting our fingers and toes and all over television. I encourage these naysayers to attend a show before they speak because they are making assumptions. In reality, all the other forms of entertainment and art has a variety of content that isn’t made for a child to view. Maybe we need a drag queen rating system?!?! I’m from the Pacman and Atari generation but I wonder if we REALLY know what’s happening on today’s video games. I have a strong feeling that there is gun violence included there for sure!

For those that say drag queens are a harm to children, why do you think it’s important to be visible with the youth of today?

For moi … (that’s french;) … DRAG has become a a marvelous exaggeration of all of my gender the masculine, feminine, and the FABULOUS. As a child I was bullied, harassed, and made to feel less than by both family and the community where I grew

up. Ultimately, I stayed closeted for years, went down dark dangerous roads with depression, alcoholism, and low self-esteem. (I’m currently 7.5 years sober one day at a time) Much of which could have in my opinion been avoided if I had been encouraged to be and LOVE myself. Having a confident healthy Queer representation in the spotlight encourages children of all ages to be themselves and even if they have no inkling inside of being gay, queer, trans or a drag artist to simply learn to treat others who may seem different with KINDNESS. There’s always time for KINDNESS!

You are one of a select handful of drag personalities that engages with children of all ages. “Drag Story Hour” is one of the events you take pride in on the east coast. Tell us what one could expect if they were to attend you story hour.

MAGIC. There is nothing more gratifying than looking out to an audience of children of all ages listening intently to you as you read a book, sing songs, conduct a dance party and interact with the innocence of children and their unfiltered authentic answers. One of my standard questions for the children is ‘what WILL you be when you grow up!’ (not what do you want to be … what WILL you be) and the answers have ranged from “a cat” to “an electrical engineer,” to my absolute favorite …” Mrs. Kasha Davis I will be a KIND person.” You will notice I say children of all ages quite a bit because the parents and grandparents who attend with the children are listening too and I have had a Dad in tears thank me for showing me that his child has a community and others who say they are inspired themselves to KEEP DREAMING. We are never too old to dream or change!

Speaking of stories, you and Mr. Davis have written and published three children’s books to date. What are the summaries of those books and do you plan on writing any more in the near future.

Thanks for mentioning my partner in life, love and all that is MKD Mr. Davis! He’s my rock, my technology advisor and the keeper of all things spreadsheets in our home. Honestly, I’m so grateful for his love. We have self-published three books that would all be considered autobiographical in a sense and coincide of course with story time. “Little Eddie P wants to be a Star!” Following your dreams even when others try to discourage you. “Your gift is your Smile!” A message of gratitude and community. “Has Anyone Said I love you?” Starring MKD MR Davis and Max our husky pup which shows us encouraging Max to remember to love himself for when we love ourselves everything is possible. I learned by the third book that the less wordy the better because over the pandemic I went live with over 100 Story time live events on Instagram, YouTube, Facebook and Tik Tok in order to give some kindness to the world during a time of confusion and distress and I realized the more books I read that the most interesting are short and to the point! I am very excited to say that I have had preliminary conversations with Susan Verde a marvelous author of children books with Peter Reynolds that I grew very fond of, and we hope to collaborate soon. Gemmed fingers crossed.

Now you and I both grew up with Mister Rogers, The Muppet Show, and Reading Rainbow. Childhood sure seemed so simple back in those days. You and Mr. Davis, along with a very special feather boa have created a new show that is a combination of all three of those shows ... but better! What is “Imagination Station” and what is the latest with development on the educational and FUN children’s series?

I am very proud to say that we have created a pilot series called Imagination Station with Mrs. Kasha Davis and we are currently shopping it out for a home on a network or streaming platform. We have been very close with a PBS affiliate who grew cold feet once the political stance began to come out regarding Drag Queens and children. The best way to describe our show is if you imagine Mrs. Doubtfire (me), hosting Pee Wee’s Playhouse in Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. We have four episodes complete and each has a day in the life of Mr. and Mrs. Kasha Davis and the predicaments we encounter. Mrs. Kasha Davis finds solutions to the day’s events in her “Imagination Station”, her mind if you will, where that world is full of pink hair, sequin gowns, a feather boa that comes to life, and an on call emergency Library hotline that always has the best book to help with the day’s events. MKD goes out and about in the community to visit places like a fire station, doctor’s office and bakery to find out what they are all about and each episode ends with Mr. and Mrs. Davis recapping the day and dad jokes. Honestly what’s not to love! I know that there is a network out there that is ready to take on this show and will be strong enough to stand with us and face the criticism with positivity and hope.

Another project that you have been traveling and promoting in multiple cities is the documentary film “Workhorse Queen.” This film is literally your life story from birth to the present moment. What was it like working with Director Angela Washko and if I’m not mistaken, the film has garnered awards along the way.

WORKHORSE QUEEN has garnered multiple awards at film festivals, has been shown worldwide, and is currently available to be seen on Starz. The process was long, gratifying and grueling in that Angela kept pushing for more truth. There isn’t much we didn’t share as a couple, as an individual who struggled with alcoholism and as a performer who found his place late in life. I am very proud to say that Angela dug deep into the Rochester Drag community as well showcasing the journey of Aggy Dune, Ambroisia Salad and Darienne Lake. The Rochester community has always been there for me so I thought it was important that everyone had a chance to shine. I am proud not only of the honesty I shared with Angela but of the friendship I gained with her along the way. She encouraged me greatly to pursue work with Story hour and bringing Imagination Station to life! I’m super grateful for her and that entire experience.

You can follow Mrs. Kasha Davis and all her adventures on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, and beyond. If you would like to donate to help fight the war on drag and the LGBTQ+ community, please head to ACLU.org/DragDefense

Love and Joy Always, Ethyl

I Want to Be Adored Greta Garbo Goes from History to Home

LGBTQ legacy is as fleeting as it is fabulous. We swap stories of love and laughter until they amplify our collective voice, gelling into a cloud of champagne memories and togetherness. Our community revels in the details of yore, from a brief flirty exchange to a must-try queer restaurant to everyone’s favorite gay bars.

Safe spaces are sacred; they are our havens and our hearts. Gay establishments can be simultaneously inclusive and exclusive, blending a gritty back-alley allure with upscale touches that invite the eye to peruse every tantalizing inch of the landscape.

And who is more gaze worthy than Greta Garbo?

The enduring star was rumored to have bedded a bevy of lesbian lovers, including Tallulah Bankhead, Josephine Baker, Louise Brooks, and Billie Holiday. It cemented her reputation as a scintillating siren both off-screen and on.

In addition to lighting up the silver screen, Garbo also shimmers on an iconic painting synonymous with the SoCal queer scene. This piece hung for years in a popular Long Beach watering hole, and it’s about to establish its new residence at The Roost in Cathedral City. We charted Garbo’s path through time by catching up with three key figures in her journey. Our oral history begins with…

36 | GEDMAG.com

“Greta came to me from a friend,” recounts Hess. “We all belonged to the Studio City Saturday Night Bowling League back in the eighties… We met every Saturday night and then everybody went to watch The Golden Girls down at the Apache. We had gone to a barbecue at this gentleman’s house. His name was Peter... And he pulled this painting out and I said, ‘Oh, how fabulous.’ And he says, ‘Do you want it?’ And I said, ‘I’ll take it.” And he gave it to me. And that would’ve had to been in ‘89.” But Hess soon learned that Garbo’s presence was as grand as her persona.

“We lived in LA, in the Fairfax District, and I had no wall big enough to hang a painting of that size. So, it just stayed underneath the bed rolled up… and it was underneath the bed from ‘93 until, I think 2001, 2002.”

Meanwhile, Hess struck up a collaboration for the ages.

“I started work for Michael Barber in 1996 at the world-famous Falcon… I was a bartender there and then I became the manager there and then I helped him open the original Fire Island. And then at Fire Island 2, I was responsible for the decorating and how we were going to do it. Around that time, he purchased The Paradise.”

This playful piano bar was the bedrock of Long Beach queer life, courtesy of Hess and Barber’s passion for prep.

“So, he asked me to come and get The Paradise ready,” recounts Hess. “I upholstered everything, we knocked the plaster off the walls to get to the red brick, redid the floors, painted the whole place. And I thought, you know what? Greta would look fabulous on that wall. I made a stretcher bar and I stretched her and brought her in.”

Ironically, the actress best known for the catchphrase I want to be alone was suddenly the ringleader of raucousness.

“Everybody just kind of fell in love with her,” Hess beams. But his affair with Garbo came to an end after five wonderful years.

“In 2007, I sold the painting and other things that were in the restaurant. There were pieces of furniture and mirrors and stuff that I sold to Michael Barber.”

Thanks for the segue, Patrick. We now pass the baton as our oral history continues…

Michael Barber

If you’ve ever enjoyed the gay caress of nightlife in Southern California, chances are you owe a thirsty thanks to Mr. Barber. His clubs echo through our queer consciousness, and his waltz with Greta Garbo began decades ago.

“I had a decorator who worked for me, and when I bought The Paradise in Long Beach, he had this [painting] in storage.”

Barber immediately understood that Garbo needed the proper stage.

“We had a huge brick wall that was just perfect for it, so we kind of immediately hung it up in the restaurant, and that was just loved and cherished by many. Everyone who came in just loved that portrait.”

Her time in Paradise spanned a baker’s dozen anniversaries.

“She hung there for 13 years, and she was quite an icon.”

Admiration resonates through Barber’s voice as he underscores Garbo’s significance.

“It’s a painting that just makes you feel good and it reminds you of that Hollywood era. It just kind of makes you smile when you look at it. She’s got the earrings and the mink cap and makeup done to the hilt, and she just looks fabulous on it. I believe it’s one of a kind. I don’t think there’s another one out there like it.”

But not every memory is quite so wholesome.

“Supposedly there was a fight with two customers in the bar, and one pulled a knife or something and damaged the artwork. And then my staff without me knowing it, fixed it and never told me about it,” recounts Barber.

As tempestuous and infamous as Garbo’s pedigree is, it’s also shrouded in uncertainty. “I tried to research it and google where it came from… there’s a big mystery of how old it is or where it came from.”

After placing the art lovingly in storage, Barber sought her next spotlight.

“A lot of my customers from The Paradise live in Palm Springs now, and I just know there’s a lot of people that are going to go in there and go, ‘Greta Garbo, I remember her,’ so that’s why I wanted it to go to someone like Jeff.”

Yet another great hand-off. Our date with Greta continues…

The bombshell brunette is making her way to Cathedral City, California, where she will trade one legendary gay gathering spot for another.

“Michael Barber was a customer of mine. Paradise was gone by the time I moved here.”

These are the words of Jeff McDonald, one of the owners and operators of The Roost.

“I knew nothing about the painting at all,” McDonald admits, until Barber “came in and told me a little bit of the history.”

It’s a history that continues to be written, and McDonald is proud to unveil her next chapter.

GEDMAG.com | 37

“As one of the great icons in our gay community back then, I think she just needs a home. And what better place than the Roost?”

Indeed, this desert hotspot exudes a glam glow that perfectly complements Garbo’s complexion.

“I just thought it would be a unique piece that would tie a lot of history to a lot of people who were in the Paradise Bar that live here now full time. It’ll be a great conversation piece. And I’ve even just redesigned our menus and we have a drink named after her.”

We’ll drink to that!

“Next time you’re in the Roost,” concludes McDonald, “pay a visit to Garbo and reminisce about your history, maybe tell us your story of the painting.”

Bringing It Full Circle

As our circuitous tale reaches its conclusion, we want to share two last well-wishes from Garbo’s illustrious past as she blazes a bold future.

Patrick Hess: “People are going to have warm thoughts about The Paradise and her new beginning [at The Roost]. I think it’s a beautiful tribute and I’m glad that she’s going to be in such a beautiful place.”

Michael Barber: “Maybe when somebody sees your article, they might say, ‘Hey, I know the artist who did that,’ or something. That would be great.”

So, there you have it - the ball is on your proverbial court. Get with Greta and spill your tea.

The Roost Lounge is located at 68718 E Palm Canyon Drive #203, Cathedral City, California.

Blair St. Clair Feeling Blessed

Indiana-born Blair St. Clair knew that she wanted to be a performer long before the lashes and wigs came into the picture. A chance casting in a production of La Cage Aux Folles fresh out of high school would introduce Blair to the world of drag…and the rest is herstory. The minute she hit the screen for her Werk Room entrance on the 10th season of RuPaul’s Drag Race, we knew she was different. With a visage of classic Hollywood, she had style and grace, and (gasp!) she could actually sing! Five years later, she boasts a series of successful singles and albums with appearances around the nation. Though she has not wandered far from the Drag Race family, she has created a brand all of her own and her look and vocals have evolved to challenge norms of gender and musical genres. Most recently, she returned to her musical theatre roots with her New York City debut in her one-person show, Legally Blair – a show about her life, liberty, and the pursuit of dreaming wide awake.

She has always been forthcoming about her Drag Race experience – the good, the bad, and the difficult. Indeed, part of her charm is her candid approach to life, her mental health, and her relationship with social media. We do declare, Blair St. Clair is our April GED Drag Centerfold.

Your first time in drag was for a production of La Cage Aux Folles what did you first think about getting into drag, was it love at first brush?

I loved this experience! It was like no other for me. I got so excited to get into makeup every day and to explore and experience everything new to me about drag.

What different element did you bring to Drag Race as the first contestant from Indiana?

I have asked producers before as to why I was cast in my original season. I definitely don’t think I was anywhere ready for my season, but I knew I needed that experience to grow. I’ve heard that I was just authentic in my tape and offered a true representation of the “Midwest” stereotype - very down to Earth and sweet but a little oblivious.

You have said in interviews, that you felt that you weren’t 100% your authentic self during your first season on Drag Race – what do you mean by that, what would you go back and do differently?

I was very authentic in my audition tape, but then once I got to set it felt like a pageant to me. I think that I assumed if I was polite, professional, and kind to everyone on and off camera that it would help me progress in the competition, similar to how that type of work ethic can get you ahead in real-life working relationships. However, I forgot that we are filming TELEVISION. They wanted us to be unhinged and act natural, and I think most of my time was spent worrying about how I might come across versus just opening up and being present.

You didn’t limit yourself to the typical bar circuit after the show like many of the other queens after Drag Race do, why is that?

I did travel and performed at many bars and venues and toured all around the world, BUT I also knew that if I only capitalized on that year of touring, I wouldn’t have much to do years after. My team and I strategized a plan for career longevity. That’s

why I decided to work myself into the music and tv/film industry to stay as relevant as possible for future work.

There has been a definite shift in the Blair St Clair brand – what inspired that change?

My style has changed and evolved for many reasons. The first is that I really hadn’t experienced aesthetics from other cities and countries. All I knew was what was around me in my hometown. I started experimenting and changing my look with those experiences. RuPaul also told me (I swear) that I was born to do drag and that my face was made for the industry. He recommended freshening up my look to be more youthful and hit my target audience demographic. I am really grateful for that feedback and for his genuine critiques.

You’ve talked about taking care of your mental health. You had to deal with some Drag Race fan negativity … how did you deal with that, what is your advice for someone who needs to pay attention to their mental health?

You have to love and take care of yourself first and foremost. I grew up in my twenties in the entertainment industry. It’s a crazy world and can be very toxic in some situations. I’ve learned to trust the opinions and critiques of those I love and care about. I don’t read the comments anymore, either. If you like me, great. If not, that’s your opinion. I happen to love myself today and that’s because I’m putting in the work to see that beauty each day.

Guilty pleasure?

Gilmore Girls.

Favorite non-profit?

NEDA (National Eating Disorder Assoc.)

Favorite binge food?

Peanut butter. I eat it with a spoon from the jar. Help. I’m an animal.

For your new cabaret show, Legally Blair, you have talked about the fact that you wanted to sing songs that are relevant to you TODAY, presently, not two years ago, not the future you, but now … where are you presently?

Presently, I’m in an interesting place. I’ve been very humbled. I’ve also been very validated. I’ve had to work harder than ever with more and more franchises of Drag Race being produced, with media changing from the pandemic lockdown, and trying to get the theatre world to take me seriously for my talents. I’ve also been very validated - I posted a thirst trap photo on Twitter to boost my engagement. Yes, we do that sort of thing to direct traffic to our other posts. It kind of blew up and shocked me because I’m so used to receiving validation for the way I look in drag but not usually out of drag. I’ve been in this state of having fun with my body both in and out of drag recently. It’s been a very liberating experience.

How has your singing and creative process changed over the last few years?

I’m 27 now. My voice didn’t change until I was 17. I was a soprano until then. I feel like my voice has just finally settled into what it’s going to be in my life. My range has drastically widened over the past few years, and it’s been really fun to play with that. Creatively, I’m working on doing things that bring me joy or pulling out songs that I’ve always wanted to do but never had the opportunity to do before!

What was your rehearsal process for Legally Blair, what did you learn most about yourself through the creative part of it?

The rehearsal process was a bit crazy. Since it was a solo show, all the material fell on my shoulders. I didn’t have a scene partner to rely on or get a quick break to decompress or catch my breath. I was the whole show. It’s either good or bad. It’s all on me. That was a bit of a weight on my shoulders, but I’m also a Type A Creative personality, so I actually like all of that responsibility. In the end, it was magical. I’ve also never worked on a show in the workshop phase. That was very tricky because I was constantly learning material that would then be cut or then I’d learn new material that would be added last minute. It was a lot!

What would the name of your biography be?

Blair: Behind the Curtain

What is your after-drag ritual?

A LONG bath

Let’s talk about your identity as non-binary. I know being non-binary is different for everyone … what does non-binary mean to you?

To me, there’s not much of a definition. I think some people assume that being non-binary is the same as being androgynous. It might be for someone, but that’s not a requirement. I feel like I slip in and out of both genders in different ways, stealing masculine and feminine things from different perspectives. Some days I feel more masculine and in touch with the characteristics that are, inherently, more masculine by nature, but then there are days where I feel more feminine and feel a need to “defy” social norms of what is acceptable. That’s when I knew I wasn’t an additional gender; I just flow in between both in different ways.

Ok, now that you’ve made your NYC cabaret debut, what’s next?  Well, you’ll have to closely follow me because there are a few things I’m working on. I’m hoping to make some announcements soon. And we’re manifesting it - my Broadway debut is coming.

What is your message to your fans?

Use your voice. It’s priceless.

Where can we find and follow you?

ON STAGE

HAIRSPRAY: Okay, you wouldn’t be reading this column if you didn’t have at least a passing interest in musical theatre, and if you have a passing interest in musical theatre, you’ve almost certainly seen Hairspray by this time. It won the Best Musical Tony when it premiered in 2002 with Harvey Fierstein dragged out as Edna. The 2007 movie version was a hit and gave John Travolta an opportunity to explore his inner housewife. The current tour has been on the road for over a year and I happened to see it early on. It was like seeing it for the first time because of the energy this company produced. Leading the current cast is Nina West (or Andrew Levitt, depending on the time of day) from Season 11 of Ru Paul’s Drag Race. You can catch it at Costa Mesa’s Segerstrom Center (SCFTA.org) April 18 – 30 and at the Hollywood Pantages (BroadwayInHollywood. com) May 2 – 21.

COME FROM AWAY: This Canadian Musical opened on Broadway in 2017 and played 1,695 performances. It is based on the true events in a small Newfoundland town during the week following the  9/11 attacks. 38 American planes, carrying approximately 7,000 passengers, were ordered to land unexpectedly at  the tiny airport. The musical shows how the locals went above and beyond expectations to make their involuntary visitors feel comfortable. Most actors play multiple roles recreating actual participants on stage. They use minor set and

costume changes, but the inventive theatricality kept the show alive on Broadway for four sold-out years. The show finishes with a reunion ten years later where the visitors and Canadians reunite to celebrate what was lost, but also what was gained. The national tour will play in Palm Desert at The McCallum Theatre (McCallumTheatre.com) April 4 – 9, and at San Francisco’s Golden Gate Theatre (GoldenGateTheatreSF.com) April 11 – 23.

SIX: 20 % history lesson, 80% rock concert, 100% entertainment. This show puts the six wives of Henry VII in sexy modern costumes onstage with a loud rock band and has them tell their stories. From Tudor queens to pop icons, the Six wives take the microphone to remix five hundred years of historical heartbreak into a joyful celebration of 21st century girl power. This new original musical is the global sensation that everyone is losing their heads over. It won’t be in the southland until May and June but I wanted to give you advance notice so you can still catch good seats. It is in essence a 90-minute rock concert but my friends who have seen it on Broadway give it the highest marks of any show currently playing, and of course historical queens and modern ones belong together! The show is still playing on Broadway plus there are a couple of tours crisscrossing the country. The only southland dates are Hollywood Pantages May 9 – June 10 and Costa Mesa’s Segerstrom Center June 13- 25. Get your tickets today!

Spring is Back!

By the time this issue reaches your hands, Spring will have arrived and Spring-breakers will have published their own share of selfies while spending quality time in Puerto Vallarta, including the many parties and events organized in town for LGBTQ+ folk. What can you expect to enjoy in Puerto Vallarta during the month of April? For starters, warmer weather and more comfortable pool and ocean time. Let’s unpack those!

OCEAN

Without question, the undisputed grand dame of Puerto Vallarta beaches continues to be Los Muertos Beach, located in the heart of the ‘gayborhood.’ Its southernmost stretch is the place to be if you are looking to connect with other LGBT+ visitors and locals. At the popular Green Chairs and Blue Chairs, you can dip your feet in the sand under a shady palapa while enjoying restaurant fare and cocktails, not to mention the excellent taco de ojo (the Spanish equivalent of ‘eye candy’) and a number of beach vendors trying to make ends meet by selling all sorts of merchandise. (If you don’t wish to be bothered, a friendly no, gracias will suffice.)

For a bit more privacy, you can opt for two beach clubs: Mantamar, which is more lively, and Sapphire, which is more relaxed. Needless to say, they both have their own swimming pools. In addition, a number of LGBT+ tour providers offer boat tours that take you to remote beaches south of Puerto Vallarta, affording beautiful views of our coastline along the way—do not forget to apply suntan lotion in your midland section if you intend to expose it to the elements!

Keep in mind: Beach vendors will attempt to sell you all sorts of things, some of which include consumables—food and recreational substances—that may not be safe to procure at the beach. Use your judgment. A local friend might be inclined to offer a helping hand, so you know what you’re getting. Also, while you may be inclined to throw caution—and your swimwear—to the wind, kindly keep in mind that Los Muertos Beach, even with its LGBTQ+ friendly sections, is first and foremost a family beach. So resist the urge to show off your family jewels in public.

POOL

In case you’re wondering, for us locals, this is the time of the year in which we send love notes to all our friends that live in complexes with a swimming pool, or start shopping for day passes in local hotels. For you, chances are that you’ve booked an awesome Airbnb property with a beautiful swimming pool. Or perhaps you have booked a stay at either Casa Cupula or Hotel Mercurio, two local LGBTQ+ that not only have pools and poolside entertainment; they also feature weekly events that you will not want to miss. Hotel Mercurio has their legendary Beers, Boys & Burgers every Sunday afternoon, featuring local go-go dancers and other talent, not to mention a wonderful opportunity to mingle with locals. Meanwhile, Casa Cupula’s newly expanded Pool Club features their popular Adam & Steve and NKD parties where you can throw your caution and your swimwear into the wind!

Off the beaten path, and in the spirit of trying something new, there are two non-LGBTQ+-specific swimming opportunities you may want to consider. Not only does Canopy River in El Jorullo offer one of the best canopy rides in town (including

the longest suspended bridge in all of Latin America, which you can traverse on foot or quad bike). Their swimming pool features a spectacular view of the mountains and ocean, not to mention a great option to refresh yourself after your canopy adventure. Further up the mountains, the Rancho Mi Abuelo recreation center redirects water from a nearby river into a series of natural swimming pools in the middle of the forest. A full restaurant offering traditional Mexican fare, along with a wellstocked bar complete the experience. Both companies offer convenient transportation from the city and back.

You don’t want to be wet all the time? No problem! Puerto Vallarta in April is chock-full of live entertainment, dining, shopping and bar-hopping options for you to enjoy to your heart’s content!

Catch up with Paco Ojeda live Monday - Saturday at 10:30 am local time, on his talk show, “Coffee & Headlines,” where he shares headlines and stories for Puerto Vallarta’s local English-speaking community. facebook.com/pacoojedalive
