Lines & Links - Winter, 2026

Page 1

A Letter from the Director

Dear Library User,

In late June, the Ohio General Assembly approved the 2026–2027 state budget, which includes a significant change in how public libraries are funded. The Public Library Fund (PLF), which provides a third of Geauga County Public Library’s (GCPL) revenue, will no longer receive a fixed percentage of the state’s General Revenue Fund Instead, library funding is now determined as a line-item appropriation in the state budget

This change has resulted in a reduction in projected funding for public libraries across Ohio For GCPL, this means a decrease of more than $150,000 in anticipated revenue during the last six months of 2025, with a total reduction of at least $250,000 expected by the end of the current budget cycle on June 30, 2027

To responsibly manage the decrease in funding while continuing to provide essential services to our community, we’ve made several difficult but necessary decisions:

• Lines & Links, this newsletter, will no longer be mailed to homes However it will be available in print at all GCPL locations and online

• We’ve reduced budgets for programming supplies and staff training, areas that offer flexibility in our budget while not reducing our core services

• Our Hotspot lending program will conclude at the end of December

• The C3 Makerspace at Chardon High School will also close in December

• We have reduced our subscription services for underutilized magazines, newspapers, and databases throughout the system

• We closed on Sundays to reduce staffing costs in 2025.

These changes may be disappointing, and we wish we did not have to reduce library services Please know that these decisions were made with consideration and a commitment to providing our core services to the community Geauga County Public Library remains dedicated to engaging our community, connecting people to resources, and inspiring lifelong learning, all while continuing to provide excellent customer service and meaningful opportunities for connection and education. Thank you for your continued support of GCPL

Warm regards,

Programming Transition for Lines & Links Rolling Registration is Here!

We are excited to share a few changes and updates coming to our programming schedule, our Lines & Links publication, and our program registration processes Due to the changes discussed in this issue's A Letter from the Director (see p 2), you may notice changes in the Lines & Links issues following this publication as to how we promote programs, manage program registrations, and our programming schedules These changes were implemented based on patron feedback, internal staff requests, and our goal to remain a responsive library, evolving to the needs of our community members and the communities we serve

To adjust to these changes while not reducing our core services and resources, we will be implementing a new program registration process that we call "rolling registration " This process is similar to what Geauga County is used to, but with one marked change — rather than program registrations for an entire programming session opening on a specified date, we will begin opening program registrations for the upcoming month on the 15th of the preceeding month. In practice, it would look like this:

Registration for January programs will open on Monday, December 15.

Registration for February programs will open on Thursday, January 15.

Another update coming in 2026 relates to the schedule of our Lines & Links publications Instead of releasing three Lines & Links issues per year, we are transitioning our schedule to now include four issues The updated schedule will align with the year's seasons and look like this:

Spring Programs: March - May

Summer Programs: June - August

Fall Programs: September - November

Winter Programs: December - February

This is why the issue of Lines & Links in your hands is shorter than you what may be used to! It only includes programs and events in January and February of 2026, as we move to our new spring program schedule that will cover March through May of 2026 Rest assured, this smaller issue is only a transitional stage as we prepare for all these new and exciting changes and updates
