The Path Forward for Geauga County Public Library

Geauga County Public Library is grateful for the community's continued support

We want to extend a special thank you to everyone who reached out to their state representatives or Governor DeWine during this year’s budget process Your advocacy made a real difference and helped show just how much our community values its libraries

Now that the state budget has been finalized, I want to update you on what it means for us. With the passage of the State of Ohio’s biennium budget, Geauga County Public Library is projecting a reduction of approximately $250,000 in funding over the next two years. This is a significant decrease from what we had anticipated Because the Public Library Fund is no longer tied to a percentage of the state’s General Revenue Fund, we won’t benefit from future increases in state revenue—even in years with strong sales or income tax growth

This change makes your local support more important than ever We’re incredibly appreciative of the strong community backing we receive through your approved local levies. It is important to note, that our funding from local levies remains flat and doesn’t increase with inflation, rising costs, or increases in property values. Combined with the reduction in state funding, this creates real financial pressure as we work to maintain the high level of service our patrons expect and deserve

That said, our commitment to you has not changed. We remain focused on delivering the programs and services you count on—storytimes, early literacy and STEAM programs, technology help, job search support, book clubs, and engaging learning opportunities for all ages.

We also remain dedicated to supporting students and educators across Geauga County, offering study rooms, tutoring spaces, and digital learning tools that support academic success and lifelong learning.

To protect these core services, we are taking steps to reduce costs where we can. We’re working together as a team to identify areas where we can streamline and where we may need to scale back non-essential services One example is our plan to move the Administrative Center to the future Chardon Branch—a long-term solution that will help us operate more efficiently and reduce facility expenses in the future

We remain committed to serving Geauga County residents Thank you again for your trust and support
