National Library Week

April 6 - 12, 2025

• National Library Week, April 6-12, 2025, is a celebration highlighting the valuable role libraries, librarians, and library workers play in transforming lives and strengthening our communities

• The first National Library Week was observed in 1958 with the theme "Wake Up and Read!" The 2025 celebration marks the 67th anniversary of the first event.

• In the mid-1950s, research showed that Americans were spending less on books and more on radios, televisions and musical instruments Concerned that Americans were reading less, the ALA and the American Book Publishers formed a nonprofit citizens organization called the National Book Committee in 1954 The committee's goals were ambitious They ranged from "encouraging people to read in their increasing leisure time" to "improving incomes and health" and "developing strong and happy family life."

At the turn of the 20th century, electric railway systems emerged across the country, connecting people to local destinations before cars and buses became prevalent In Northern Ohio, entrepreneurs Edward Moore and Henry Everett developed an extensive network of electric railways, spanning from Detroit, Michigan, to Buffalo, New York, and reaching as far south as Wheeling, West Virginia

In Geauga County, the electric railway, known as the Maple Leaf Route, ran from Cleveland to Troy It later expanded west to Detroit, east to Ashtabula, and by 1910, extended to Buffalo Key hubs in Cleveland, Chagrin Falls, and Willoughby housed depots, offices, car barns, and the electric generating plants owned by Moore and Everett

The Chardon Opera House, opened on December 15, 1875, was a vibrant cultural hub in Chardon, Ohio, designed by architect C M Palmer of Youngstown It hosted a wide variety of events, including performances, speeches, church services, and political gatherings. Famous figures such as Frederick Douglass, Victoria Woodhull, and James A. Garfield graced its stage. The building, which could accommodate 500 to 600 people, was renowned for its beautiful architecture and decor, including a frescoed ceiling and private boxes Though it became a motion picture theater in 1922 and now houses government offices, the structure still stands, with "Opera House" visible on its exterior.

Good Stories

Why do you love your library?

In celebration of our incredible community, we recently asked our patrons and staff one simple question: Why do you love the library? The response was overwhelming, with heartfelt testimonials pouring in, each one a reminder of the important role the library plays in the lives of so many. From discovering new favorite books to attending life-enriching programs, your stories capture the true spirit of what makes our library a cherished place. Under the "Good Stories" title, we’re excited to share some of these wonderful testimonials, highlighting the joy, inspiration, and connection the library brings to Geauga County.

"My mom always took us to the library every week, even before we started school. I had a favorite book, The Little Rabbit Who Wanted Red Wings. My mom would read it to me every day until it was due again. We would walk back to the library to return it and then I would run to the shelf to find it and borrow it again. Imagine 60 plus years ago, it didn't make it back to the shelf that fast! My mom would sneak over and whisper to the librarian to please put it back in circulation so I could borrow it again. The story is about a rabbit who wanted red wings, but when he tried to go home with his wings, his mom didn't recognize him. It always stuck with me, do not try to be someone other than yourself!"

"It's close, new, and staff is not only friendly but also helpful. I also enjoy the wide variety of programs offered."

"The people who work there are very friendly and helpful."

"A week or so ago, I took a phone call from a person in Chicago. The caller stated that he was in a park watching his kids play. He went to sit on a bench and noticed a man's wallet. He opened it and saw a Geauga County Public Library card. He called us and asked if we could call the person so he could give him back his wallet. I called the patron and asked if he was in Chicago and was at a park, to which he said "Yes." I told him someone had found his wallet and that the person who found it was waiting for him on the park bench. He was extremely grateful. I just thought this was a great example of the trust people place in libraries."

"My reading adventure started in 5th grade with The Witch of Blackbird Pond. I was thus hooked on mysteries and over ** years have been a Geauga County library member ever since and probably visited each of the libraries in Geauga County over the years. My interest in literacy for our younger generation started when I had children, and I would take them to storytime along with their trip to pick out books at the Bainbridge Library. As an empty nester, I decided to volunteer with Women United to help disperse books throughout Geauga County through our Little Libraries and established a Book Drop at Highway Garage in Bainbridge."

"One of the storytime moms told me that at her daughter's preschool, every month they fill out a "favorites" sheet to send home to parents. And every month, when the daughter was asked, "Where is your favorite place?" She would answer, "The library!"

"I want to say that every time I see a request from the Geauga County Public Libraries, it makes me smile. I grew up in Chardon and was a library page at the Chardon Branch in the early 2000's as a junior and senior in high school. I remember the time fondly, and it was an experience that made me wish to pursue librarianship as I considered my career path in life. :-)"
