It's going to be an exciting year!

The Geauga County Public Library is celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2023, and you can expect to see some exciting events and projects throughout the year to commemorate this milestone!

The county's first public library was established in 1848 in Chardon and has remained a steadfast service to its community ever since. Almost a hundred years later, in 1942, a second branch was established in Middlefield, which was quickly followed by a third in Chesterland. However, it was not until July 9, 1963, that the County Commissioners decided that the three separate libraries were to unify as one County District Library System. This decision united the three separate libraries under a common goal and allowed them to share their resources, collections, and programs.

The 60th anniversary will be an exciting period for both the library and its patrons. This achievement underscores the community's commitment to sustaining a high-quality public library system and allows us to highlight the countless improvements we have made throughout our years of service while celebrating our excellent staff.

The services and resources offered by GCPL have grown tenfold since 1963 and have continually adapted to meet the community's ever-changing needs. As a result, your library card has never been as valuable as it is today! The types of materials we circulate have greatly expanded and modernized - 60 years ago, you could not have checked out computer equipment, early literacy kits, or telescopes, but they are now commonplace in our libraries. Furthermore, we now offer an extensive digital collection of books, magazines, music, movies, and resources that our patrons can access instantly without leaving the comfort of their homes. While many improvements have been made since our founding, the one consistent attribute of GCPL that makes your library card so valuable is our knowledgeable staff, who remain committed to providing the community with excellent library services.

As we gear up to celebrate our 60th anniversary, we hope that you utilize the resources your public library has to offer. To learn more about those resources and the steps we have taken to accommodate the community we serve, stop at your local branch and ask any staff member. They will be more than happy to tell you about all the resources available to you as a Geauga County Public Library card holder.

We invite you to visit one of our six local branches or access our online services to celebrate Geauga County Public Library's 60th anniversary. We hope to see you soon!

For a complete list of our services, please visit GeaugaLibrary.net
