Berkshire High School

Time is Now for Seniors to Make Their Mark Last Year’s Lumps Should Help Team Improve By Jamie Ward jamie@geaugamapleleaf.com

Coming off one of the most trying seasons in school history, the Berkshire Badgers know the only way forward is to work hard in practice so they can see results on Friday night. “We rededicated ourselves to the weight room — speed and agility — and we had good numbers in the offseason,” said Josh DeWeese, starting his sixth season as head coach. “We are trying to build the culture of the program, shake the foundation, and move toward the things we want to be doing. Things we didn’t do last year.”

Josh DeWeese Sixth season (20-31): A history teacher at the high school, DeWeese is a 1996 Berkshire graduate who stabilized the program.

A New Offense

Berkshire will go away from its I-formation offense and transition to a shotgun. But running the football will still be key. Senior Richie Klemencic was taking the snaps at quarterback during early August practice. Klemencic is a strong run-first signal caller that can help Berkshire with its strength on offense this season, which will be running the football. He played running back and fullback a year ago. “His experience of being a running back is helping him out,” DeWeese said. Klemencic said he is impressed by the attendance numbers in the team’s offseason workouts. And he’s impressed with the attitude. “It’s the best it’s been since I’ve been here,” the senior said. “Everyone is putting

in a lot of effort, they are paying attention, listening to coaches and learning. There should be improvement everywhere.” But sophomore Jacob Brown was also in the hunt to be quarterback, and the young man could see some snaps depending on the direction of the season. DeWeese has a lot of confidence in his skill players, regardless of who plays quarterback. Ryan Pennypacker figures to be Berkshire’s workhorse. The junior had 566 yards last season. Berkshire has been strongest in recent history when a dominant back takes the reins. “We are really aggressive this year, and we want to put in some wins,” Pennypacker said. Griffin Urban and James Lorenzo both figure to also get carries, although Urban is also the team’s tight end.

Seniors Ky Bowman and Jacob Young were two of the team’s leading receivers a season ago, so they will play most of the time at split end. Sophomore Blake Jenkins was having a strong camp and will have some balls thrown in his direction. The Badgers took their lumps with a young group of offensive linemen a season ago. But that means a more experienced unit on the field now. Everyone on the line this year saw time last season. Zac Nehas will anchor the line at left tackle. Michael Miller will be the senior center. J.J. Perin returns as the team’s left guard as a sophomore. Andy McKinney is the right tackle. The coach’s son, Ethan, will play right guard.

A Tougher Defensive Unit

Most of the Badgers play both ways. Last year, the Badgers allowed 30 or more points in nine of their 10 games. The defense will have to get better with another year under its belt. But junior Joe Barcikoski had a breakout season last year at free safety. His 63

tackles were second on the team, behind Urban’s 85. The linebacking unit should be strong with Urban and Klemencic on the outside and Pennypacker and Nehas on the inside. “We are playing with 10 times more aggression this year than last year,” Pennypacker said. “It should be promising.” Also Spencer Price will help lead an athletic secondary with Young and Bowman. Lorenzo and Donald Reis will rotate in at strong safeties. DeWeese likes the depth in the sophomore and junior classes on both sides of the ball.

Extra points

• Father-son combos are not uncommon on a football team. Coach DeWeese said he doesn’t coach the linemen directly, so that helps his on-field relationship with his son, Ethan. “It’s compartmentalized between home and football,” DeWeese said. “He might get angrier at me quicker, so I let other people coach him.” • Former Berkshire QB Gordon Cossick takes over as the team’s offensive coordinator.

Cardinal High School

Seniors Believe a Special Season on Horizon Team Returns 13 Total Letterwinners to Both Sides By Jamie Ward jamie@geaugamapleleaf.com

Eric Cardinal 19th season (98-82): A social studies teacher at the high school, Cardinal has kept a competitive program despite the challenges the district has faced.

The Cardinal Huskies believe they are on the verge of something special this season with a returning group of seven seniors, all of whom started last year, some playing since freshmen year. “The guys have high expectations,” said Eric Cardinal, beginning his 19th season as head coach. “That’s always a plus. These guys have senioritis in a good way. They know the scoop. They know the nomenclature. They know everything. It’s second nature to them.” All of those things also make them good leaders.

An Experienced Offense Returns

Senior Matt Carney has 20 varsity starts, and should lead the Huskies Wing-T offense with poise. Carney’s strength is putting teammates in position at the line of scrimmage to exploit weaknesses he sees in the defense. “He puts us in good situations,” Cardinal said. “We want him to be able to be audible and do what he sees. We are going to use his intellect and his abilities fully.” Carney said the team has high expectations. “It starts in practice, but practice hard, play hard,” Carney said. Cardinal threw the ball just 95 times last year, compared to 370 rushes, and that isn’t expected to change much. Senior Trey Shirkey returns as fullback.

Despite nagging injuries that forced him to miss significant time, Shirkey rushed for 659 yards on 87 carries. When healthy, due to his size at 6-1, 232, he is the team’s workhorse, and he takes his job as a leader seriously. “I feel healthy,” Shirkey said. “When the team needs me, I need to step up. I think the seniors have changed the atmosphere this year. I think we’re more serious.” Shirkey admitted it’s tough being a senior as his time at Cardinal comes to a close. “I hate it,” he said. “It’s very scary.” Other halfbacks and wings who will carry much of the load include Brice Hogue and Tyson Sinclair. Juniors Mike Lucarelli and Casey Horner will also see carries. “It’s a perfect start (to practice),” Hogue said. “We have high expectations, no doubt. If everything runs smoothly, we

should have a really good year.” “We have expectations for everyone to push each other and lead each other and overall just grow on each other,” Sinclair said. “It’s looking good right now.” Sinclair tells the younger Huskies this isn’t just a team — it’s family. “This is something that you can come to one another when you have problems,” Sinclair said. “It’s not just a game, it’s a way to grow.” The offensive line will be led by senior guard Isaiah Tucker. Juniors Josiah Zurick and Robbie Granny are both returning starters. Carl Scribben, Dominic Dragolich, Max Retych and precocious freshman Mike Soltis will all compete for time. Senior tight end Crossland Robinson is a big target with great size at 6-2, 203 pounds. Jacob Gotham will play some fullback and upback. The senior can also play tight end.

An Experienced Defense Returns

Cardinal’s base 40 defense lost just three starters from a year ago. Gotham, Sinclair and Hogue return as senior leaders of the linebackers.

Page 7

Tucker

“We have high expectations this year, so we’re trying to work hard and get right to it,” Gotham said. “As leaders, we are trying to get the younger guys to step up. We need to show them how to step up — just trying to teach them.” Hogue said the linebackers are a strength. Junior Seth Peters is a quick nose tackle. Scribben and Granny will join him on the line. And Robinson and Tucker should see time at defensive end. In certain situations, coach Cardinal would like to line Shirkey up at that spot. “The idea of Trey with his hand down coming off the edge is pretty attractive in certain situations,” the coach said.

Extra Points

• Last season’s 54-7 win over Berkshire was the second most lopsided victory in the two schools’ 65-year history. Next was when Middlefield beat Burton 59-0 in 1956. • The Joe Peters Memorial Pig Roast raised enough money again to drastically reduce pay to play costs for all fall athletes.

Chagrin Falls High School

With Right Breaks, New-Look Tigers Eye Playoffs An All-Ohio RB Should Lead the Offense By Brian Lavrich sports@geaugamapleleaf.com

Mark Iammarino 24th season (171-86): A counselor at the high school, Iammarino has taken the team to 10 playoff appearances since arriving.

Last season the Chagrin Falls football team finished 5-5, which, at first glance, looks pretty pedestrian. However, a closer look reveals how close the Tigers were to being a playoff team. The Tigers finished 13th in the Division IV, region 14 playoff rankings. However, their five losses were to teams with a combined record of 51-9. Four of the five teams reached the playoffs. That includes a one-point loss to Division VI state champion runner up Kirtland in a game in which a Tiger extra point was blocked along with one touchdown losses to rivals Kenston and Orange. The Tigers were also 5-2 in the Chagrin Valley Conference under coach Mark Iammarino, who will be in his 24th season leading Chagrin Falls. That record was good for third behind champion Perry and Orange. “We’ll be pretty new,” Iammarino said. “We were a senior dominated team last year.” If the Tigers are to get over the hump and get back into the playoffs for the first time since 2013 they will have to rely on a lot of new faces. Chagrin Falls lost 18 players to graduation that started or saw significant time last season. The Tigers will have a new quarterback, or maybe two this year, after the graduation of Christoph Sontich. In the running for the starting spot is senior Sean Cusack,

who started junior varsity last season, and junior Cameron Owen. “We’ll look and see how they do,” Iammarino said. “They have two very different skill sets. They’re very different types of players. Sean is bigger and stronger with a very good throwing arm. Cam is shorter, quicker and a good runner.” Running back is one spot where the Tigers have a returning star in senior Mick Lawrence. The All-Ohioan has earned more than 1,500 yards of total offense each of the past two seasons between rushing, receiving and returning punts and kicks. Last year he ran for 484 yards on 7.8 yards per carry with eight touchdowns. He also caught 48 passes for 508 yards and four more touchdowns. Junior Will O’Brien will provide depth behind Lawrence. “I think opposing teams will see Mick

right off the bat,” Cusack said. “But we have guys coming up who can make a difference.” Senior Drew Beckwith (17.2 yards per catch) and junior Lucas Gaizutis (17.8) return as the top receivers behind Lawrence. Gaizutis was also an All-CVC punter. Sophomore Xavier Perez will provide depth and has plenty of potential. “Receiver and running back, that is where our experience comes back,” Iammarino said. Chagrin Falls has three returning senior linemen, who will play both ways led by Henry Woofter, who is 6-foot-3 and 250 pounds. Joining him on the line will be Ralph Barone (6-1, 210) and Peyton Lewis. Senior Joe Conway will contribute on the lines as well. “My goal is to make the playoffs,” Woofter said. “I want to be part of the Chagrin Falls tradition.” Lewis said the Tigers should be ready to go. “We’re definitely missing a lot of guys from last year, but we have a lot of new guys ready to fill those gaps,” Lewis said. “We’re not the biggest team, but we fly around and

get to the ball. The speed we have on the edge and in press coverage is solid.” Barone agreed with Lewis. “Last year, we had a lot of seniors and not as many younger guys got a chance,” Barone said. “I think we have a solid team. We all play together. We know what we are and what we can do.”

Defense should be a strength

Iammarino named several linebackers who can contribute this year including junior Drew Zimmer, sophomore Dawson Pierce and sophomore Owen McClintock. They will be on the inside with Gaizutis and O’Brien playing on the outside. The Tigers should have a good secondary led by Owen, Lawrence, Perez and junior Paul Fierman. Last season Lawrence recorded 82 tackles. Senior Beck Darden, who kicked for the JV last season, is competing with fellow senior Daniel Wise for the place kicking responsibilities. The Tigers open the season with a road game against Kirtland Friday before playing three of their next four games at home.

Chardon High School

Lack of Experience Not an Excuse

Only Two Starters Return on Offense and Defense By Jamie Ward

jamie@geaugamapleleaf.com

Mitch Hewitt Eighth season (53-24): A high school social studies teacher and Chardon graduate, Hewitt has kept the Hilltopper tradition alive and well.

When Mitch Hewitt calls you a Hilltopper, you take it as a compliment. The Chardon graduate has played on and coached the program’s best teams. He married his high school sweetheart, the high school he teaches at now. He lives with his family and four kids on Chardon Avenue. So when he calls this year’s seniors Hilltoppers, it’s more than coach-speak. “That’s how I define them,” Hewitt said. “That’s the utmost compliment I can give them. They aren’t going to be the biggest, strongest, fastest. But they do what they are told. And they embrace what football is.”

Top Skill Returns

The offense returns two of the most athletic skill players in all of Geauga County in quarterback Andrew Kobuszewski and halfback Jonathan McKnight. “Andrew has the chance to be better in regards to anyone we’ve had as an allaround quarterback,” Hewitt said. “His ability to throw the ball is better than anyone we’ve had. That’s a bold statement, I know. I don’t say it lightly.” Chardon’s Wing-T offense rarely throws the football, and that may not change. But coaches will feel more comfortable if it does. The other halfbacks have good speed in Cole Purchase, Max Vujaklija and Jacob

Urbic. The halfbacks also have big blocking roles in the offense. Fullbacks DJ Bowman and Wade Novak will also be relied upon to move the ball. “I’m excited about our new offensive line,” Novak said. Jacob Gaspar will play the split end, and Dante Perrico will play the tight end. The offensive line is made up of entirely new faces. But coaches have been impressed with how quickly they have caught on and how hard they work. “They have been one of the bright spots of camp,” Hewitt said. Andrew McNaughton leads the unit as the starting center. “I’m trying to take control of the unit and make sure everyone is doing their job,” said McNaughton, who has also played guard and tackle, but lacks varsity experience. “We’re young, but everyone

hits really hard. Our hitting and intensity makes up for inexperience.” T.J. Finger, Jesse Decipeda, Josh Kernc and Jaret Hall figure to be the other four starters on the line.

Only Two Returning Starters on Defense

Most of the team’s top defenders graduated a year ago, including an almost entirely new front-seven. Purchase will have big shoes to fill at linebacker. “We are fitting all our pieces together,” he said. “But I think we’re going to be strong once our d-line and linebackers figure out what we’re doing completely. We’ll be tough to beat.” Vince Ferrante will be the other linebacker. On the defensive line, Novak, a starter a year ago, said he’s excited about his senior season. “And I’m excited about what we can do on defense.” Jaret Hall, John Dinko and John Paglio expect to be the other starters on the line. Chardon will deploy five defensive backs at times this season, with McKnight, Nathaniel Sulka, Keaton Ziegenfuss, Urbic

Page 13

and Max Liechty leading that unit. “Our cornerbacks are solid, and our whole secondary,” Hewitt said. McKnight, as a two-way player, is the best athlete on the team. Chardon, 6-4 a year ago, expects to have another winning season. “Our weakness of inexperience has proven to be the strength of our team in that nobody thinks they’re better than they are,” Hewitt said. “They are improving daily. The sky is the limit.” “We have a bunch of dogs,” McNaughton said. “We are all self-made.”

Extra Points

• Chardon’s schedule gets harder with the addition of a back-to-back Final Four team in Perry in Week 2. And six of the regular season games will be on the road. Canfield in Week 3 was 12-1 last season, beating Chardon in Chardon 31-14. “We will be in dog fights for 10 straight weeks,” Hewitt said. • Frank Hall, a familiar face in the community, returns to the program as the offensive coordinator. • Junior Keaton Ziegenfuss will do the punting and kicking.

Hawken High School

Hawks Ready to Soar Under New Coach Roster Numbers are Up After 2017 Season By Brian Lavrich sports@geaugamapleleaf.com

Brian Stephenson First season: From Lima, Ohio, Stephenson played football at Yale. He will call the plays.

A new era is starting for Hawken football as long-time coach Cliff Walton, who the Hawks’ field is named after, retired after last season. The new era begins with coach Brian Stephenson, who is very happy about the opportunity Hawken offers. “I have big shoes to fill,” Stephenson said. “I want to help keep the culture going. We have a proud, winning tradition. One of the best things is we have an established culture.” Walton coached the Hawks for 37 years and finished his career with 236 victories. Stephenson is originally from Lima, Ohio, where he graduated from Lima Shawnee. Then, he went to Yale where he played defensive back and special teams. Last year, he was the offensive coordinator at Woodberry Forest School in Woodberry Forest, Va. The Tigers are a perennial playoff team. Last season the Hawks struggled as they finished 3-7 and 3-4 in the Chagrin Valley Conference. But the players are excited for a new season under a new coach.

Offense May Use Two QBs

Stephenson said there is strong competition at quarterback between seniors John Byrne and Nate Grossman. “We can play both because they have unique talents,” Stephenson said. He added that Byrne is more of a classic drop-back

passer while Grossman is a better runner. Grossman played both receiver and defensive back last year. “Coach is doing a good job of keeping the old aspects (of the offense), but we also revamped things to speed things up,” Grossman said. The top two ball carriers for the Hawks should be sophomore Zach Miller and freshman Patrick Reineke. Miller had some varsity time last season. Hawken’s numbers are actually up from 20 at the start of last season to 30 this year. Miller said the added depth along with running plays faster will help the Hawks this season. “We’ve added some new players that can really help the team,” Miller said. “We have more depth. We’re running a quicker offense. I don’t think we’ll be as fatigued as last year.

With Chips on Shoulders, Bombers Ready to Fly Kenston Has Loads of Talent on Each Side of Ball By Jamie Ward jamie@geaugamapleleaf.com

Jeff Grubich Seventh season (35-30): An energetic Kenston teacher, Grubich is a Chagrin Falls graduate and brings an experienced staff to the program.

2018 Schedule

Last season when Kenston beat Willoughby-South 38-8 in Week 10, they waited to find out their playoff opponent. An hour later, the 8-2 Bombers were shocked: They missed the playoffs by 0.3 of a point. The 2018 Bombers have not forgotten that hurt, and it’s become the rally call throughout practices. “It’s something the kids are still having a hard time swallowing,” said head coach Jeff Grubich, starting his seventh season. “But my old saying is, ‘you take a negative and you turn it into a positive.’ I remind them, just remember how you felt.” Having lost only four starters on both sides of the ball, the Bombers expect to have another strong season.

A Skilled Offense

The Bombers have changed their offensive philosophy some since Grubich became coach. Previously Grubich preferred a break-neck pace, but last season the team slowed things down at times. Both paces will be utilized this season. Jon Tomcufcik was forced into the starting QB spot as a sophomore. After starting all 10 games, the junior is ready to take the next step. “When you have a young quarterback, you think let’s just manage the game, but by the end of the year he started winning

games for us,” Grubich said. Tomcufcik knows the offense, so his preparation this year has been mostly review of the playbook. “Now it’s simple for me,” he said. “Last year I made some rookie mistakes. This year I’m not a rookie anymore.” The same is true of Jack Porter, who ran for more than 1,400 yards and scored 22 touchdowns from the running back spot. “He’s been one of those kids all offseason who has been holding kids accountable,” Grubich said. “I’m only hoping for team success,” said Porter, deflecting from his outstanding statistical season. “But having more experience really helps.” The junior running back was also chosen as a captain on a team that has 12 seniors. Bransen Stanley had 33 catches to lead the team last season. His 700 yards put

him over 20 yards per catch. “Knowing I’ve been here since a freshman, that feels great,” Stanley said. “I want to give my teammates a lot of knowledge. I feel like these guys look up to me and respect me.” Tyler Mintz returns as the other bigplay wide receiver. Senior Alex Robarge and junior George Sell will anchor an experienced offensive line at the tackles. Senior Brandon Schroeder will lead from the center position. The guard positions were still up in the air early in camp, Grubich said. Junior Javion Middleton and senior Dorion Talley are both looking for snaps at the skill positions.

A Strong Corps of Linebackers

The Bombers were to return all four of their linebackers from last season, including the team’s two leading tacklers. However, Sam Leygraaf was lost for the season with a preseason injury, a major blow. Seniors Leygraaf and Matt Iklodi are the defensive leaders and captains in the middle. “It’s probably the best leadership we’ve had in a long time,” Grubich said. “Just

good kids, and they work hard.” “Everyone is fired up and ready for a new season,” Leygraaf said. Iklodi said Kenston’s offense has traditionally had more attention. “But what I like to say is offense sells tickets, and defense wins championships,” Iklodi said. Senior Joe Staudenbaur and junior Logan Vargo are the other two. Kenston will replace both defensive ends. Junior Tim Matty and senior Jacob Engelhart will look to fill the void. Stanley and Talley will start at the corners, and Mintz will play at free safety. The Bombers have never hosted a home playoff game. With a lack of two-way players, the key will be to stay healthy — and make sure nobody or nothing keeps them from their goals. “If you win all 10 games, nobody can deny you,” Grubich said. “There’s definitely a chip on our shoulder,” Porter said. “That’s easy motivation.”

New Newbury Faces Ready for Next Chapter Team Has Just Missed Playoffs the Past 2 Seasons By Jamie Ward jamie@geaugamapleleaf.com

When Ryan Williams took over the Newbury football program two seasons ago, the future was very much in doubt. The turnaround of the Black Knights — 10-10 in those two seasons — marked an incredible comeback. Now, with the graduation of the team’s top players, there is a new challenge: sustaining the success for a new generation. There are 17 on the roster, which isn’t uncommon in Division VII. There are eight seniors on the team.

Ryan Williams Third season (10-10): Former Beachwood head coach, Williams has stabilized the Newbury program.

New Faces on Offense

Senior Noah Parsons takes over at quarterback in an offense that Williams likes to compare to the single-wing. It’s a run-first approach, with the quarterback himself taking a lot of the carries. “There are big shoes to step into,” Parsons said. “But I’m pretty confident. I learned behind (Johnny Chambers) for two years.” Parsons took some varsity snaps last season, and also played running back, so there’s reason to be optimistic about what he can accomplish this season. “He has knowledge of the offense, and he’s been doing a really nice job,” Williams said. “He will have a lion’s share of carries.” “If you’re tired, keep going,” Parsons said. “Just never give up.”

Parsons said the new backs are catching on quickly. First-year player Noah Arnold will play running back along with seniors Dylan Hamilton and Nathan Mohar. Because the offense relies on misdirection and counter plays, the offensive line is also important to a well-run offense. “It’s worked out great for us because even if the other team has a better player, if we can get him out of position, it doesn’t matter,” Williams said. Jacob Orms will be the team’s starting left tackle. Ryan Mansfield will play left guard. John Tropf will play right guard. AJ Rogers is a transfer who has good size at right tackle. And Jake Koller will be the other starter on the line. “I love it, everything has been great,” Mansfield said. “I don’t care if we win or

It’s Reload, Not Rebuild, for Lions in ’18 Offense Headlines Perennial Playoff Team By Jamie Ward jamie@geaugamapleleaf.com

Andrew Mooney is an offense-minded coach. But he understands it’s been mostly defense that has catapulted the Lions to six playoff games in the past three seasons. That could change this year, as the Lions return more talent on the offensive side of the ball than Mooney has seen in his four seasons as head coach. “I’m really excited because we are bringing back the most skill we have ever brought back,” said Mooney.

Andrew Mooney Fourth season (25-11): A social studies teacher at the high school, Mooney has installed a winning culture every year.

A Leader in the Huddle

Nick Gatozzi came into camp as the starting quarterback, a first for the coaching staff in avoiding a competition. Gatozzi split time a year ago, but now comes in as a true dropback passer. “He does a lot of things really, really well,” Mooney said. Gatozzi is excited about the chance to throw the football. “I’m pretty confident with opening up our offense more,” Gatozzi said. “I’ve been doing a lot of work in the offseason with my mechanics.” The Lions always strive to establish the running game on offense. Zach Urda, Kyle Medves, Jack Robinson and Alec Roberts will start the season as the team’s running backs by committee. The Lions lost only one primary receiver to graduation. This is a unit that

Mooney and coaches are excited about, and will spread NDCL out more this season with four-wide sets. “Our goal is to throw when we want to, not when we need to,” Mooney said. The offense uses tight ends as a key, and senior Anthony Rabil is a big target at 6-foot, 3-inches tall. Junior tight end Sam Urbanski established himself as a go-to threat in the second half of last season. Senior Alec Roberts is a deep threat on the outside. David Martin will catch passes, along with Nick Balogh, Jimmy Mitchell and Johnny Nguyen. Senior Aidan McDonald will anchor the offensive line as a three-year starter. McDonald hasn’t missed a snap since the beginning of his sophomore season. “I feel like we’re going to be strong,”

New Attitude is Focus for New Wolverines Coach Team Ready to Embrace a More Positive Philosophy By Jamie Ward jamie@geaugamapleleaf.com

Adam Sopkovich First season: Coach Sop spent several years as an assistant coach at Oberlin College, coaching the receivers and running backs. He was head coach at Warrensville Heights for one season, in 2013.

Everybody agrees the Wolverines had an attitude issue a season ago. New head coach Adam Sopkovich is here to turn it around. “I just try to be encouraging,” said Sopkovich, known as Coach Sop, watching his team on the third practice in August. “When you look in the mirror, that’s your true opponent. Ask yourself, ‘Who are you today?’” Sopkovich brings 21 years of football coaching experience at high school and college levels. “I enjoy every minute of this,” he said. There are 16 seniors on the roster, and Sopkovich was impressed with their leadership early on.

A Change in the Offense

West Geauga will transition from a run-dominated offense to something more spread out with west coast principles, the coach said. Sopkovich had not decided among three quarterback possibilities early in camp — senior Gino Fornaro, junior Riley Huge and sophomore Nick Henry. All are likely to take snaps at some point throughout the season, potentially even within the same game. Fornaro, a captain, has the most experience. He still only threw three passes a season ago. But he is a slash triple threat,

meaning he will both carry and catch the ball. “We’ve been practicing hard,” Fornaro said. “Attitude has totally changed ever since Coach Sop first started. He brought a great attitude.” The Wolverines have three backs penciled in to get carries: senior Michael Lyman (180 yards last season), sophomore Trae Zimmermann and Fornaro. Coaches expect big things from senior captain Justin Renner at wideout. “He’s a burner who does everything well,” Sopkovich said. “It’s going to be exciting,” Renner said of the offense. “We have different sets, and we’re throwing in a lot of good stuff. It’s going to be a good year. I love this senior group that I’m with.” Luke Musser, Nick Henry, Levi Veverka, Cody Jacobson, Klevi Rybak and Forna-
