Middlef ield Middlefield Post Looks to Expand Free Pickup Distribution

Move Offsets Rising Postal, Printing Costs while Growing Circulation Staff Report The Middlefield Post will be transitioning to more of a free-forpickup delivery model, a change designed to offset rising postal and printing rates while putting more copies of the newspaper into more hands across the communities it serves.

Under the new model, the Post will expand its circulation and distribution throughout Middlefield

and the surrounding areas, including West Farmington, Windsor and Orwell, with free copies available at participating stores and other convenient pickup locations.

Postal rates have climbed steadily in recent years and printing costs continue to rise across the newspaper industry. Rather than pass those increases along to advertisers, the Post is redirecting resources from the mailbox to the storefront — a move designed

to keep the newspaper free while growing the total number of copies in circulation.

Readers will be able to pick up the Post at local retailers, restaurants and other high-traffic locations throughout the coverage area.

A full list of pickup locations will be published in upcoming editions as plans are finalized.

For advertisers, the expanded distribution means broader reach across Middlefield, West Farm-

ington, Windsor and Orwell — and more readers seeing their message in every issue.

Cardinal Aces the Test, Sweeps St. John and Paul

It was a game that was circled on many volleyball fans’ calendars when the top two teams in the Northeastern Athletic Conference faced off in an early league game Aug. 25, the Huskies hosting the Heralds from St. John and Paul School.

Coached by Sarah Howe, the Heralds forced Cardinal to call an early timeout after a 4-0 start at the service line from junior setter Breelyn Graham. The Huskies finally got on the board after a hitting error by the Heralds, then enjoyed a strong run at the service line to keep them close.

In the opening set, the Huskies recorded seven aces.

“Our plan is always to serve away from the liberos, which we did really well tonight,” said senior Olivia Krebs.

After trailing 0-4, the Huskies strung together a series of points and tied the set at 16. While the Huskies were within two points of taking the opening set after a kill from senior outside hitter Natalie Soltis, Krebs recorded back-to-back aces.

Four set points later, Cardinal came away victorious in set one, 25-22.

Klepper finished the night with 21 assists, looking to build off of her freshman campaign in which she recorded 289 assists. Alongside Soltis, sophomore Lily Rulong, Krebs and senior Nova Young, the Huskies added freshman Ava Filla on the opposite side.

Cardinal could make a strong push in the playoffs this season with its experience and competitive roster.

Defensively, the Huskies are paced behind senior libero Adelyn Grant for the third year in a row.

In Tuesday night’s win, she led the team with 14 digs.

The Huskies clawed their way to a 26-24 third-set win and a 3-0 sweep over the Heralds, a team that took them to five sets last season.

“We wanted to go into the game with great attitudes, we wanted to

hype each other up, and we were all having fun,” Grant said after the win.

It is Cardinal's second year in the Northeastern Athletic Conference, and with this win, the Huskies picked up their second sweep of the season and 17th swept match in the NAC. The team intends to defend its NAC championship and be more See Volleyball • Page 3

Middlefield Mosquito Control Program The Village of Middlefield’s weekly mosquito control spraying program in September will be held Sept. 8, 15, 22 and 29, from 9-10:30 p.m., weather permitting.

The schedule can change week to week. Spraying is cancelled or delayed if mosquito trap counts fall below threshold, winds exceed 10 mph, rain chances reach 50% or higher, temperatures drop below 55 degrees, an ozone action day is declared or equipment fails.

From the President's Desk — Windsor Historical Society

By Lucy Bean, President The Carter Creamery was located in the area that is the park at the junction of Noble Road and state Route 534 in the center of Windsor. It was the center of the cheese and butter market of the area. About 2,000 pounds of butter was made daily. It was reported that 95,000 pounds of cheese was made here in 1874. A cheese weighing 2,000 pounds was sent to the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition in 1876. It required such a large box it was fabricated outside the factory. The creamery consumed the milk from 3,500 cows.

Christ Church Episcopal was built in 1832, has a crown steeple and is shaped like a New England meeting house. The pews are made of solid walnut and the rippled glass in the Gothic windows still remains.

It's listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The church is owned by the Windsor Historical Society.

Skinner's Mill was built in 1840 by a fellow named Samuel Weiland, later sold to Ackland Skinner. Water to operate the mill's machinery was furnished by Phelps Creek. A dam was built and a sluice carried the water from the storage pond to the water wheel. The mill was torn down in the 1920s.

The Elk Hotel was built in 1809, some say; others say the 1890s. It was built as a store by Aymer Payne and an east wing was added by Fred Sargent with a dance hall on the second floor. It was then known as a general store, post office, telephone exchange and finally as the Elk Hotel. Here it was like a mini mall — buy groceries, get a haircut, buy millinery goods, eat meals and sleep.

A night's lodging and meal cost 50 cents. It later became a restaurant and antique shop, The Switching Post, in the 1950s.

Windsor's octagon house was built in 1847 by W.H. Higley. It is one of six in Ashtabula County and the largest and most elaborate of the three rural houses. Originally each floor had nearly square rooms and four of triangular shape. An outstanding feature of the house is its circular staircase that winds up through a center hall to an eight-sided cupola at the top. It was reported that the house was an Underground Railroad terminal for slaves during the Civil War. QUICK NOTE: Don't forget our Chinese auction coming Sept. 24 at the Windsor Community Center (the brick school).

Brush Chipping Sept. 2 @ 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

The Village of Middlefield Service Department will provide brush chipping services for its residents, excluding commercial and industrial business establishments, on the first Wednesday of each month, from April to October and limited to the following: FOR – disposal of small amounts of brush and branches that are removed by residents for normal maintenance and upkeep of property. Total amount of brush chipping service time spent at any residence shall be limited to a maximum of fifteen minutes.

All remaining materials must be removed from public view within 48 hours after the chipping service date.

FOR – brush and branches less than six inches in diameter, placed at the curb with the butt end placed toward the street and perpendicular to the curb, free of string, wire, rope or material, in piles no higher than 4 feet.

FOR – brush and branches placed at the resident’s curb no sooner than 3 days prior to chipping service date. Residents placing brush and branches in advance of the 3 days will be required to remove the debris from public view, until 3 days prior to the chipping service date.

FOR – shrubs and roots free of dirt from normal maintenance and upkeep of property.

NOT – for the removal of entire trees by residents or commercial entities.

NOT – for tree stumps or brush from site clearing by residents or lot clearing activities performed by commercial entities.

NOT – for brush or branches brought in from another location.

NOT – for brush and branches placed out for chipping too late, once the chipper has been down the street.

Brush and branches will be required to be removed until the next regularly scheduled chipping service date. In major storm related events, the village will determine and announce emergency storm-related brush and branch collection dates and times outside of the regular monthly chipping date.

Police Blotter The following is a sampling of the calls handled by the Middlefield Village Police Department Aug. 7-27, 2026, as reported in weekly media reports.

911 PROBLEM Aug. 26 12:25 a.m. Tare Creek Parkway. A 911 call captured an apparent domestic dispute in a wooded area. A woman said a man had punched her, pleaded with him not to hurt her and later could be heard crying.

Dispatchers believed a child might also be present. Police located the parties and filed a report.

ANIMAL PROBLEM Aug. 23 2:36 p.m. North Thompson Avenue. Police responded to a report of an opossum in the roadway near Cardinal High School.

The animal was removed from the road and placed in the woods.

CITIZEN ASSIST Aug. 9 9:31 a.m. East High Street. Christ Covenant Church asked police to make checks every 15 to 20 minutes during its service because of concern that a man could pose a threat. Police were asked to continue the checks until the service ended.

Aug. 10 12:49 p.m. Kinsman Road. A caller reported seeing a man in a blue van holding a woman by the arm.

The woman reportedly yelled, 'Don't hit me.' The caller provided a photograph, but police were unable to locate the vehicle or the people involved.

DISORDERLY Aug. 12 7:52 p.m. North State Avenue. A woman waiting for food at Mary Yoder's Amish Kitchen reported a man in the vehicle behind her got out, banged twice on her window and cursed at her while her children were in the car. She believed he was upset about the wait. Both vehicles were gone when police arrived.

DOMESTIC DISPUTE Aug. 9 10:45 p.m. Industrial Parkway. An employee reported that a former boyfriend had followed her to work. The woman had cuts on her face and said the man owned a gun, although she did not know whether he had it with him. Police filed a report.

HARASSMENT Aug. 19 11:15 a.m. South State Avenue. A caller said people had been driving by and making obscene gestures and believed a neighbor might be involved. Police spoke with the neighbor, who denied making the gestures and said he had not seen anyone else doing so.

SUSPICIOUS Aug. 9 7:32 p.m. Madison Road, Middlefield. A caller reported a man outside a disabled van swinging a sword at least 3 feet long. Police learned the man was waiting for a tow and had decided to practice with his historical-reenactment swords to pass the time.

No assistance was needed.

Aug. 14 7:51 p.m. Kinsman Road. A caller reported a woman in pajamas with the trunk of a white sedan open and luggage spread across a business parking lot. Police spoke with the vehicle owner, who said she was homeless and reorganizing her belongings. She was advised to pack her belongings and leave at the request of the business, and she left without incident.

Aug. 18 4:28 p.m. South State Avenue. A caller reported a blue truck with a red trailer loaded with junk tires near the grain silos and believed the driver was waiting to dump the tires into a ditch. Police contacted the driver, who said he was scratching lottery tickets and had no plans to dump the tires. He left without incident.
