Middlef ield Jake Bean Drafted By Hometown Guardians

By Cameron Palmer sports@karlovecmedia.com For as long as he can remember, Jake Bean dreamed of hearing his name called in the Major League Baseball Draft.

On July 13, that dream became reality when the Cleveland Guardians selected the former Cardinal High School standout in the 11th round with the 333rd overall pick.

For Bean, the mo- Bean ment was even more special because it came from the organization he grew up rooting for.

"It doesn't feel real. It's so freaking cool," Bean said. "When I got

the call and everything officially got finalized, I was a wreck. I started bawling my eyes out.

"This is the coolest thing ever because it's one of those things that every kid dreams of for their whole life growing up when they play baseball.

Then when it actually happens, it's like, 'Am I dreaming?' I'm so thankful for the Guardians for taking a chance on me.

I'm really excited to get to work and show them what I can do. I'm fired up."

The selection capped a whirlwind year that tested Bean in ways he had never experienced.

After earning First Team

All-Mid-American Conference honors during two standout seasons at Kent State, Bean transferred to Louisville, hoping to prove himself in the ACC. Instead, he endured the most difficult season of his baseball career, finishing with a 10.29 ERA across 35 innings.

Rather than allowing the struggles to derail his professional aspirations, Bean embraced the lessons that came with them.

"I didn't have a very good season, and I struggled quite a bit there," Bean said. "But it was one of those things where I learned a lot about myself as a pitcher. I learned how to handle adversity and work through the struggle when you're not doing well.

"I'm very thankful for my time there. I loved it. That whole season really taught me a lot about myself, who I am as a person, and who I am as a player. It taught me how to work through the struggles and through the hard times and keep my head up and stay positive."

Despite the numbers, Bean's potential continued to attract professional scouts. Shortly after Louisville's season ended, he received an invitation to the MLB Draft Combine in Arizona.

"I got lucky and received an invite to the combine and went out to Arizona for five days," Bean said.

"That was such a cool experience to be around all the top players in the country. I interviewed with See Bean • Page 3

Planning Commission Advances Heritage Pointe Phase Two

By Ann Wishart ann@karlovecmedia.com Construction of the model home in the first phase of Heritage Pointe subdivision in Middlefield Village is slated for completion by July 21, with sales of the first 39 lots anticipated to begin about a month later, according to the developer.

Hot on the heels of the first phase, Middlefield Village Planning and Zoning Commission voted July 7 to recommend for council’s review preliminary plans for the second phase of the development.

Probate Court to Hold Marriage License Clinics in Middlefield Couples looking to tie the knot this summer will have a convenient option closer to home, as the Geauga County Probate Court announced it will offer marriage license application and issuance services at the Middlefield Village Municipal Center on four dates beginning next month.

The next clinics will be held at 14860 N. State Ave. on July 22, from 2-5 p.m.

Both parties must appear together to apply. The fee is $74, cash only.

Applicants are required to bring a Social Security card and a government- or school-issued photo ID showing date of birth. Appli-

cants between the ages of 18 and 21 must also present a certified copy of their birth certificate. Anyone previously married must provide certified copies of all divorce decrees or, in the case of a deceased spouse, a certified copy of the death certificate. No blood test is required.

At least one applicant must be a Geauga County resident to apply in the county. The marriage may take place anywhere in Ohio.

Sales Tax Holiday Set for Aug. 7-9 Staff Report Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine is urging residents to take advantage of the state's annual sales tax holiday, which runs from 12 a.m. Friday, Aug. 7, through 11:59 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 9.

The three-day break is timed to help families cover back-to-school costs, DeWine said.

“Ohio’s Sales Tax Holiday comes at a time of year when families are getting ready

for back-to-school,” DeWine said. “The sales tax break is designed to provide meaningful savings for families as they purchase new school essentials for the upcoming year.”

The following items qualify for the exemption during the holiday: • Clothing priced at $75 or less per item • School supplies priced at $20 or less per item • School instructional materials priced at $20 or less per item Tax Commissioner Patricia Harris said the department is encouraging both shoppers and retailers to plan ahead.

“This annual holiday provides meaningful savings for Ohio families while supporting back-to-school preparation,” Harris said. “We encourage shoppers and retailers to plan ahead and take advantage of the exemption.”

Additional details, including frequently asked questions and guidance for consumers and retailers, are available on the Ohio Department of Taxation website at tax.ohio.gov.

Brush Chipping Services Scheduled • Aug. 5 @ 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

The Village of Middlefield Service Department will provide brush chipping services for its residents, excluding commercial and industrial business establishments, on the first Wednesday of each month, from April to October and limited to the following: FOR – disposal of small amounts of brush and branches that are removed by residents for normal maintenance and upkeep of property. Total amount of brush chipping service time spent at any residence shall be limited to a maximum of fifteen minutes. All remaining materials must be removed from public view within 48 hours after the chipping service date.

FOR – brush and branches less than six inches in diameter, placed at the curb with the butt end placed toward the street and perpendicular to the curb, free of string, wire, rope or material, in piles no higher than 4 feet.

FOR – brush and branches placed at

the residents curb no sooner than 3 days prior to chipping service date. Residents placing brush and branches in advance of the 3 days will be required to remove the debris from public view, until 3 days prior to the chipping service date.

FOR – shrubs and roots free of dirt from normal maintenance and upkeep of property.

NOT – for the removal of entire trees by residents or commercial entities.

NOT – for tree stumps or brush from site clearing by residents or lot clearing activities performed by commercial entities.

NOT – for brush or branches brought in from another location.

NOT – for brush and branches placed out for chipping to late, once the chipper has been down the street. Brush and branches will be required to be removed until the next regularly scheduled chipping service date.

In major storm related events, the village will determine and announce emergency storm-related brush and branch collection dates and times outside of the regular monthly chipping date.

Message from the Mayor Hello Residents, We completed our review of those who registered their residence for the America 250 Decorating Celebration. I, with help from Councilperson Carl Hornung and my wife, was personally able to canvas the Village and was impressed with the number of residents who made an effort to show their patriotism with lighting, banners, displays and flags. This is truly a remarkable year in our country’s history: 250 years of freedom.

I counted more than 300 flags being flown and I probably missed some. Flags are mounted on mail- Garlich boxes, flag poles and some are even formed from LED, and the flagship flag was a 57-foot by 30-foot flag painted in a back yard. Some of the displays took minimal effort while others took maximum, but regardless of effort it shows pride and love of country. (I will also comment, ‘some were very creative.’)

Even after the interview, Cleveland remained quiet leading into draft weekend.

"Up until Sunday, I hadn't really heard anything from them, and we hadn't really talked at all since then," Bean said. "Going into the draft, I didn't really have Cleveland in the cards."

Everything changed once the 11th round began.

"As soon as the 11th round started, we got 10 phone calls from different teams," Bean said. "My agent had told me that Seattle and Cleveland were putting an offer on the table. He also told me that Cleveland picks before Seattle does, so I had to choose between the two teams.

"I asked my agent what he thought I should do, and he said, 'I think you should go with Cleveland.' That was all I needed to hear, and we jumped on the offer as quickly as possible."

Bean said hearing that organizations still believed in his potential after a difficult season was exactly the confidence boost he needed.

"It was very reassuring," Bean said. "Coming off a rough year, I was down on myself. It felt like I just ruined my chances, but right around the end of the season, I got the invite to the combine, and that was a huge confidence boost for me.

"Knowing that even though I had that rough year, to still have the faith coming from the pro scouts that believed I still have the

window fronts and buildings. I appreciate their effort to add to the patriotic theme of our community.

I wake up every day knowing I am blessed to have spent my entire life in this free country and thank God and those who served for the life I enjoy and will never take for granted.

We will recognize our winners at the August council meeting.

Thank you for making a special year more special. Let’s continue to celebrate and be especially thankful for our great country as we move through the remainder of 2026 and beyond.

That belief made joining Cleveland an easy decision.

"They have one of, if not the best, farm systems for pitchers in the league," Bean said. "That's why it was kind of a no-brainer for me. Being a young college pitcher, it's really the best-case scenario for me to go into this organization.

"It makes me super comfortable, and I'm so excited to be able to go there and learn and soak in as much knowledge as possible so I can improve my game and hopefully help out the organization."

Bean will report to Arizona to begin working with the Guardians' player development staff before eventually being assigned to either the Arizona Complex League or Low-A Lynchburg.

"I'll be out there for the remainder of the fall," Bean said. "It'll start with throwing bullpens and getting ramped up, which will be a day-by-day process.”

Long before starring at Kent State and Louisville, Bean built an impressive résumé at Cardinal High School.

A four-year letterwinner in baseball and basketball who also competed in football and golf, he was named the 2023 PBR Ohio Div. III Player and Pitcher of the Year after posting an 8-1 record with a 0.49 ERA, 115 strikeouts and just nine walks while batting .483 with 12 doubles, 24 RBIs and 13 stolen bases.

Now, after overcoming adversity and earning the opportunity to begin his professional career, the hometown product will chase his Major League dream in the organization he rooted for as a kid.

Mosquito Control Program The Village of Middlefield's weekly mosquito control spraying program will wrap up July with a treatment set for July 28, from 9-10:30 p.m., weather permitting.

The schedule can change week to week. Spraying is cancelled or delayed if mosquito trap counts fall below threshold, winds exceed 10 mph, rain chances reach 50% or higher, temperatures drop below 55 degrees, an ozone action day is declared or equipment fails.

the festival grounds were packed as visitors enjoyed food trucks and a refreshment tent hosted by BMR President Jeff Pascoe and volunteers, according to the release.

A “Passport Program” connected attendees with 40 local nonprofit organizations, Fox said in the release, adding visitors engaged with representatives to learn about their community missions and received stamps on a festival passport to enter a grand-prize drawing.

Participating nonprofits praised the initiative, spearheaded by the committee under Festival Chairwoman Kathy Vatty, for providing a platform to share their causes with attendees, Fox said in the release.

“Excitement peaked with the announcement of the raffle drawings,” he added.

Bob Voss, of Chester Township, won the grand prize, a black Chevy Silverado pickup donated by Preston Auto Group of Burton Village, Fox said.

Twenty other ticket holders won cash prizes of $500, $1,000 and $2,500, he said in the release, adding the online-only outdoor adventure package — featuring a rugged ATV, premium crossbows, tents and elite hunting gear — went to lucky participants.

The festival also featured two 50-50 raffles.

“The online 50-50 raffle reached an historic $16,000 jackpot, sending one local winner home with a check for nearly $8,000,” Fox said in the release. “A separate, on-site

festival day 50-50 draw awarded an additional $1,040 to a lucky attendee.”

The festival also highlighted the Rotary club’s community support.

Attendees watched a demonstration by the Geauga County Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit, with Pascoe volunteering as the “villain,” the release said.

“The demonstration underscored a recent $5,000 grant awarded by BMR to the K-9 unit to help cover critical veterinary expenses for the service dogs,” Fox added.

“Live music kept the crowd energized from afternoon into the evening.”

Rockability opened the entertainment, followed by Pieces of Eight. The festival also featured a surprise vocal performance by a Middlefield resident and business owner, the release said.

“The massive scale of the fundraiser was made possible by more than 50 local sponsors, with contributions ranging from $100 to $10,000,” Fox said in the release.

Following last year's distribution of more than $80,000 to local organizations, Burton-Middlefield Rotary officials project this year's turnout will allow the club to meet or exceed that amount, Fox added.

Proceeds from the event will be distributed to nonprofit recipients during the annual Maple Splash Raffle Appreciation Event at the Welshfield Inn on Aug. 12, according to the release.

Tickets for the eighth annual Maple Splash Raffle will go on sale in December.

developer Joe Svete said moving the second phase forward will help maintain momentum as homes in the first phase begin selling.

“The timing is such that Right at Home (Realty) has a contract to have 14 lots sold in advance … in order for them to continue,” he said. “They don’t want a lapse in time between selling and building. They have a fantastic marketing machine.”

In March, council approved the planned unit development plat for the first phase on the northeast portion of the property, which includes 39 lots averaging about one-half acre.

“I’m very optimistic that, by the end of the year, they will sell 15 to 20 homes (in Phase One). By spring, we will only have 20 homes left,” Svete said, adding council’s timely approval of Phase Two is important so infrastructure can be completed in time to meet the marketer’s schedule.

Phases Three and Four will each consist of 40 lots, while Phase Five will have 52 lots, Svete said last Tuesday.

The 208-lot development occupies about 80 acres, with its main entrance connecting to Lake Avenue.

A model home near the entrance is close to completion, he said. Once it opens, a 30day marketing campaign will commence before lot sales officially open for Phase One. Buyers will be able to choose from a variety of Ryan Homes floor plans and options.

Lots are generally 60 feet wide and 150 feet deep, similar to those in the neighboring Windsong subdivision, which Svete also developed. Homes will be about 40 feet wide, allowing approximately 20 feet between them.

“We have a contract to sell each lot for

the same price,” Svete said, adding the marketer may place a premium on lots near the four ponds of $5,000.

“They determine the value of individual lots,” he said.

The commission's action marks the first step toward construction of Phase Two. “The engineering is being done now,” Svete said, with the drawings being submitted to the village engineer for approval before they come back to the commission.

Geauga County Soil and Water Conservation District and the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency have to sign off on phase two, he said.

Supplying electricity to Heritage Pointe is also in the works.

Commission members were told The Illuminating Company needs easements from seven Lake Avenue property owners for a 15-foot-wide utility easement along the front of their properties.

Commission member Dave Dietrich asked why the company needs 15 feet instead of using the standard 12-foot right of way.

Boksansky said the new utility poles will be installed in front yards on the house side of the sidewalk, requiring easements from those property owners.

The village also must acknowledge the easement plan, and negotiations with property owners are underway, he said.

Village Mayor Ben Garlich said the development’s power supply will be coming from existing lines along Grove Street.

Svete said all utility lines within Heritage Pointe will be installed underground.

The commission acknowledged the easement plan.

Svete was accompanied at the meeting by his daughter, Jackie Janke, of Florida, who is a partner in the project.

Cardinal Adds Sensory Hallways

Cardinal Elementary School added new sensory hallways this summer to help students focus, regulate emotions and take movement breaks throughout the school day.

The upgrades were made possible by Fellowship City Church through its Love Your Neighbor mission.

The hallways feature floor decals for activities like crab-walking, hopscotch and marching, along with breathing exercises and visual cues. Former Associate Principal Brittney Owen said the space gives students a safe way to step out, get energy out and return to class ready to learn.

“A lot of times these kids need a break from the classroom to refocus and recenter themselves, where they can come back ready to learn and to be successful,” said Bob Kujala, who served as principal at Cardinal Elementary for the past three years.

District occupational therapist Allison Novotny said the sensory path provides vestibular and proprioceptive input that helps students regain self-control and focus, benefiting their physical, cognitive and emotional development.

and sensory wall panels, which include tactile and calming elements such as sequins, mazes and textured shapes. The hallway is available to all students, including those with an IEP or 504 plan.

Families can see the sensory hallway for themselves during Cardinal Local Schools’ Open House in September.
