Wolverines Beat Lions By Skin of Teeth By Rich Kelly sports@geaugamapleleaf.com Having put a blemish on the fine season of the West Geauga Wolverines with a holiday season victory over the Wolverines, the Notre Dame Cathedral Latin Lions knew the stakes would be high in their rematch in the district semifinal matchup in Division II action at Lakeside High School. With no secrets between the teams, execution was of the utmost importance. Using short runs during the rematch, the Wolverines had one late in the game, then had to hang on for dear life in the waning seconds as the Lions got one last push downcourt. It failed, and West Geauga moved on to a district title matchup with the Perry Pirates by way of a thrilling 48-46 victory over the Lions. See Basketball • Page 6

Discussion about the future of Newbury Schools’ property began Feb. 18 in a joint meeting between Newbury and West Geauga school boards.
Adding a small school district to a larger one is like taking two jigsaw puzzles and fitting together all the pieces to make a clear picture. Newbury Schools and West Geauga Schools officials are faced with that challenge. On Feb. 18, they started discussing the process of combining the two districts at their first joint meeting at Newbury High School. Both boards of education, administrators, superintendents and a handful of interested residents,
including Newbury Township Trustee Bill Skomrock, started the meeting by touring the Newbury Schools campus. They trekked from the football field to the auditorium, where members climbed into the scaffolding to view the stage, then to all three floors of the high school. One West Geauga Schools Board of Education member voiced the opinion many residents from Chester and Russell townships had never been to the Newbury campus and probably underestimate the facility’s See Merger • Page 8
