Mind Challenge Gives Seniors a Way to Stay Sharp, Social

What began as an effort to get seniors out of their homes and engaged with others has grown into a regionwide trivia-style competition designed to keep minds sharp and communities connected.

Phil Levine and Art Greenberg, retired broadcast executives, launched the Mind Challenge eight years ago.

“It was designed to get seniors out of their homes, to socialize, to have them use their brains,” Levine said during the West Geauga Senior Center’s second-round event April 30.

Modeled in a format similar to NCAA-style Jeopardy competition, the Mind Challenge brings together senior teams from across Northeast Ohio each spring for a four-week tournament held at participating senior centers.

Levine said the program now includes teams in 11 host cities, stretching from Austintown to Wickliffe, Brook Park and Chester Township.

Around 75 communities are represented across Northeast Ohio, Greenberg said.

Teams wager points based on confidence in their answers, Levine explained.

The West Geauga Senior Cen-

ter serves as the host site for the East region, which includes 11 teams representing communities such as Chester Township, Kirtland, Willoughby Hills, Mentor and Perry Township.

There is no limit to the number of teams a senior center or community can enter, and participation is free for players, teams and centers, according to the program’s website.

Questions span a wide range of topics, including Ohio geography, vintage baseball, farming and tools.

“It brings them together (and) kind of eliminates that isolation,” said West Geauga Senior Center Recreation/Education Coordinator Christine Bacon. “It's so important as you get older to work your mind, just like you have to exercise

South Russell Village resident Betty Mog is competing in the program for the fourth time.

“I'm so glad that West G is doing it,” Mog said. “It's been fun going around to see the other centers in other years and this keeps me humble, when I think I know something (and) find out I don't.”

The program is supported by sponsors who set up booths at events and contribute to prize funds awarded to senior centers. Winning centers use the money to support programming, Levine said.

Prizes include $2,500 for first place, $1,500 for second place and $1,000 for third place, he said.

ing senior center activities aftercovering available programs, Bacon added.

“I enjoy the camaraderie and the fun aspect of the game. It is very challenging,” Burton resident Bob Wilkin said.

The competition continues for two more weeks before finals are held May 27 in Independence, Levine said.

“(It) keeps us stimulated with our brains and active with other people,” Mentor resident Frances Meinke said. “We enjoy the challenge, it makes you think. None of us have the same knowledge base. Some are good in sports, some are good at president history.”

West Geauga Schools Highlighted at Kiwanis Meeting

West Geauga Schools Superintendent Nancy Benincasa spoke at a recent Kiwanis Club of West Geauga meeting, highlighting the district’s academic rankings within the state, athletic success and curriculum offerings.

Benincasa discussed the offerings in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) programs and answered questions from attendees. West Geauga High School Principal Ryan Patti also outlined trade and career pathway opportunities available to students.

Benincasa was joined by district staff members, a school board member and the district’s treasurer.

Kathleen Rose Hoar

Kathleen “Kathy” Rose Hoar (nee Campbell), age 71, passed away with grace and dignity at home on May 7, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family.

Obituaries

Born in Cleveland, Ohio, on Nov. 29, 1954, she was the beloved daughter of the late William and Dorothy Campbell and the oldest of four daughters. Kathy shared a lifelong close bond with her sisters and family, filled with cherished memories of vacations, shopping, gardening and time spent together.

Kathy graduated from West Geauga High School in 1973 before earning her nursing degree from Willoughby-Eastlake School of Practicing Nursing College. She devoted 45 years to nursing and caring for others, beginning her career in the emergency room at MetroHealth before working in local nursing homes and doctors’ offices. She finished her career caring for the nuns at Notre Dame Village, a role that brought her great joy. Kathy’s compassion, wisdom and gentle spirit touched countless lives and she remained a source of comfort, guidance and support to everyone around her.

On Feb. 19, 1977, Kathy married the love of her life, Kenneth “Kenny” Hoar, and together they shared 49 years of marriage built on love, faith, family and adventure. She is now reunited with Kenny, who passed away on Feb. 26, 2026. Together they raised four children, Joel (Lindsey) Hoar, Ryan (Samantha) Hoar, Scott (Aimee) Hoar and Erin (Dan) Detwiler.

Kathy was a proud grandmother to Campbell, Jonathan, Alison-Claire, Liam, Ella, Harper, Frankie, Charlie, Morgan and Daniel, all of whom brought her endless joy.

Kathy and Kenny loved traveling, boating, spontaneous weekend adventures and hosting family gatherings at the family farm. Kathy also enjoyed gardening, crafting and creating beauty in everything she touched.

A woman of deep faith, Kathy was devoted to the Catholic Church and committed to helping those in need through charitable work and acts of kindness. She also fulfilled

a lifelong dream by becoming a published author of “Mama’s Girls.”

Kathy will be deeply missed by her children; grandchildren; sisters, Laura (Tom) Ross, Pattie (Ray) Loomis and Jane (Bill) Heiden; as well as many nieces, nephews and dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband, Kenny; and daughter-in-law, Mollie Hoar.

Visitation and a memorial mass for both Kenneth and Kathleen were held May 16, 2026, at St. Helen’s Catholic Church, 12060 Kinsman Road, Newbury Township, with Father Jay McPhillips officiating.

Eugene E. Schultz

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Eugene "Gene" E. Schultz on April 29, 2026, after a brief illness. Gene was a quiet pillar of strength, wisdom and kindness throughout his life.

Obituaries

Gene was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on Oct. 4, 1945, to the late Harold E. and Ruth M. (nee Craig) Schultz and grew up on the family farm in Chester Township, Ohio. He graduated from West Geauga High School in 1964 and proudly serving in the United States Navy before returning home to build his career and raise his family.

Gene was a loving son, devoted husband, caring father, loyal brother, cherished uncle and treasured friend and neighbor.

He was employed as a welder for CEI and retired in 1992.

Gene married Jacqueline “Jackie” (nee Sikora) in 1971 and they raised their two children, Stacey and Eugene "Bo" Jr., on the farm.

Gene devoted his time to caring for the land and those around him. He believed in hard work, integrity and compassion. Whether it was working in the apple orchards, supporting a neighbor or selling at a local fruit market, Gene was all in.

He loved working on cars and tractors, splitting wood and plowing snow, and always enjoyed an ice-cold beer. He also loved road trips with Jackie, mostly south to Virginia

or north to Canada. More recently, Gene worked side-by-side with his son Bo to transition his family farming tradition.

Gene was preceded in death by Jackie.

He is survived by his daughter, Stacey Schultz, of Willoughby, Ohio; son, Eugene E. Schultz Jr., of Chesterland.

Family includes brothers, Arthur Schultz (Tammy), of Fairfax, Va., and Clifford Schultz, of Chesterland (deceased); brothers- and sisters-in-law, Bruce and Cindy Gabriel, Fred (deceased) and Karen Berard, Jeff and Gail Duwe, and Dale and Janis Schroeder. He also had many loving nieces and nephews.

Gene’s spirit will remain in our hearts forever, guiding and encouraging us to lead our lives with purpose, strength and humility. May his memory continue to be a blessing to his family, friends and the community where his roots were so deep and the fruits of his labor so plentiful.

With love and deep remembrance, visitation was held May 7, 2026, at Gattozzi & Son Funeral Home, 12524 Chillicothe Road, Chesterland.

A funeral service was held May 8, 2026, at the funeral home. Burial followed in Chester Township Cemetery.

Students Prevail at Envirothon

Students from West Geauga High School demonstrated exceptional environmental knowledge and field skills at the Area 2 Envirothon competition, with two teams earning top placements. One team finished first while another earned second among 48 teams representing 17 Northeast Ohio counties. Their strong performances secured both teams a spot at the upcoming Ohio State Envirothon competition.

The Envirothon is a premier academic and outdoor environmental competition that

challenges high school students to apply their understanding of the natural world through hands-on activities and field testing. Students are evaluated in five core categories: aquatic ecology, forestry, soils, wildlife and current environmental issues.

Unlike traditional classroom competitions, the Envirothon requires students to demonstrate practical skills such as assessing water quality, identifying tree and wildlife species, analyzing soil profiles and applying critical thinking to real-world environmental challenges.
