As you open this weeks issue up, we have traveled north to check out this years 65th DETROIT AUTORAMA. This is not our first trip to this show and surely it will not be our last.

This is one of the 2 biggest and best events for gearheads in the USA. Like the GNRS which we were at earlier this year (complete coverage in this issue too), the Detroit Autorama has it’s own dynamics that make it special and fun to be at and part of.

Not a lot of car shows have taken place for 65 years for one. The RIDLER competition brings out the best of the best each year. The ante gets raised each year to claim the RIDLER Award which is open to any vehicle being shown for the first time anywhere.

Life is short gearheads… you all know this. Make it a point to get to the Detroit Autorama at least once in your life and get the check on the bucket list. Once you go though...once may not be enough!

The IDIDIT Open House and Car Show, set at the company’s facility in the Michigan Great Lakes Region, is changing dates seeking better weather.

Michigan weather isn’t always as consistent as the quality of vehicles on display, according to the company. Originally slated for the first week in October, ididit’s Car Show & Open House has weathered snow, rain and cold temperatures in recent years. In order to dodge the weather, the company decided to move this year’s car show to Sep. 16.

“The date for the 2017 car show may have changed, but we will continue to showcase the best custom cars from the region, as well as provide our neighbors a chance to tour our manufacturing facility and win great prizes,” said Megan Lunsford from ididit. “We are proud to be an integral part of the Tecumseh community and our annual car show and open house is a way for us to show our gratitude to the place we all call home.” ididit’s 2017 Car Show & Open House is free for all, and will feature the car show, vendor exhibits, and giveaways.

SEMA President and CEO Chris Kersting is calling for renewed support for the RPM Act of 2017. Kersting explained in a recent video, released by the SEMA Action Network that the RPM Act requires additional support after being reintroduced in Congress.

Subject Line: Recognizing the Protection of Motorsports Act of 2017, RPM Act. Example Letter Body: As a constituent, I respectfully request that you cosponsor H.R. 350/S. 203, the "Recognizing the Protection of Motorsports Act of 2017." The RPM Act protects the right to convert an automobile into a racecar used exclusively at the track.

The 2016 version of the RPM Act lapsed due to last year’s shortened election year schedule. The new Congress wasted no time in reintroducing the 2017 version in January and both bills have bipartisan support (80 cosponsors in the House, 16 in the Senate).

Modifying a vehicle into a racecar is an integral part of America's automotive heritage.

Many types of racing, including NASCAR, were founded on the premise that street vehicles can be converted into racing machines.

Racing events are an economic driver for many communities and a source of affordable family-friendly entertainment for millions, with participants that range from professionals to novices using converted race vehicles.

“In order to continue this support, enthusiasts and industry members need to send new letters to the new Congress,” SEMA stated in a news release. “Even if someone sent a letter last year, it is critical that s/he send a new letter this year!

This time honored tradition is now under threat by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The EPA has recently taken the position that it is illegal to convert street cars and motorcycles into race-only vehicles, threatening the hobby and thousands of related jobs. Based on the EPA's new interpretation of the Clean Air Act, racers and businesses whose products are installed on converted race vehicles are in violation of the law.

The future of motorsports remains in jeopardy! Reintroduced at the beginning of the new Congress, the Recognizing the Protection of Motorsports (RPM) Act is a bipartisan bill that protects Americans' right to modify street cars and motorcycles into dedicated race vehicles and safeguards the industry's right to sell the parts that enable racers to compete. The new Congress needs to hear from you. Write to your members of Congress and tell them to support the RPM Act and protect our right to race now and into the future!

Congress never intended for the Clean Air Act to apply to motor vehicles modified for competition use only. The RPM Act is the only clear and permanent fix that will prevent EPA overreach and misinterpretation in the future.

The 68th edition of the Grand National Roadster Show (GNRS) is in the books as they say. If you weren’t able to make it to the “BIG SHOW”, we’re going to show just a little bit of a great event. We would show more, but we would need a whole lot more magazine as this is one BIG SHOW! The GNRS is actually multiple shows within a show . With events and displays taking place both inside and outside, it really does take more than a day to truly see it all.

As our good friend Larry Williams of Williams Graphics coined it a few years back, , the GNRS is like a BIG Car Carnival. We mean that in a good way. So much fun to be had. Add in the set up of the Fairplex and it does in fact look like the midway of a fair or carnival, only this one is so much more cooler.

Building 4 is the center of the GNRS activity. Rightfully so as this is where the AMBR contenders are located. Roadsters are king of this event and they show it well in #4. A majority of the vendors at the show are set up in #4 too. Add in some of the big hot rod shops with their displays of recent builds and its easy to see why building 4 stays busy all weekend long.

Building 4 also had a very special display this year. With the very recent passing of 16

Pete Chapouris, set up near the front of the building, was the original “California Kid’ and “Limefire” in tribute to Pete.

Pete was a very big part of the GNRS since its move to So-Cal, from being a judge for the AMBR competition to be being a competitor for the AMBR too.

Set up in the other buildings at the Fairplex are more hot rods, muscle cars, cool customs, lowriders, various race cars, woodies and more! They get set up together for the most part in the buildings together, which makes for great viewing.

Even sprinkled in these buildings are additional vendors for you to check out.

Each year the GNRS has a themed display in building #9. This year was a showcase of the Tri-Five Chevys celebrating 60 years. We will be doing a separate feature on this display in an upcoming issue.

For us, one of our favorite buildings/ displays to see at the GNRS, is the Suede & Chrome building. These folks have some cool traditional style rods and customs on display, rock-a-billy bands playing and some great artwork and clothing on display and for sale too. The hot rodders enjoy what they are doing all weekend long.

Outside the buildings are a number of different vendors also. From Brookville Roadsters to STOKERS HOT ROD Factory, to paint company and more, you could just about build a hot rod with everything on display. Throw in a killer cover band that knows how to rock the Fairplex and it makes for a great time.

Did we mention motorcycles? The GNRS has some of the finest 2 wheeled hot rods showing from across the USA and world too! Works of art they are! They too compete for the America’s Most Beautiful Motorcycle. Some serious competition for this award.

On Saturday at the GNRS, it’s Grand Daddy Drive-In day. Area hot rodders participate in the outdoor car show that takes place. It takes place on Sunday too, but Saturday is the BIG DAY as 1000 pre-72 rods, customs, muscle cars and more come out and park between and around all the buildings f that are filled with show cars. There is judging and awards for these cars too!

Now you can see what we mean about the Car Carnival! An abundance of hot paint, cool chrome rolling on righteous rubber of different sizes, with great music playing all weekend long.

On Friday & Saturday in building 4 there are 2 cool events that take place. Mitzi & Co hold the Pin-Up Contest. Competition is always fierce, as the 1-2-3 place winners get to be part of the Awards presentation at Trophy Time., along with some other cool prizes. All day Friday and Saturday the pinstripers bash takes place, with auctions sprinkled during each day.

Art Schilling, a.k.a. “East Coast Artie” came to the GNRS to help the auction out with his awesome striping on a lot of pieces. The BIG auction takes place on Saturday Night and there are usually some celebrities in the crowd to help move the merch’! How cool is it seeing Bluesman Jimmy Vaugh hittin’ a lick on a guitar that has been customized and is up for auction!

All of this and more makes up the Grand National Roadster Show. If you have never been or it’s been a few years since you have been, make your plans now for the 69th Edition on the last weekend in January 2018. We’ll be there so feel free to tag along with us...you will have maximum fun!

The show will be held on grass ball fields of Rotary Park with a 40’ x 120’ open tent to sit and relax. The lake, the park, and the beautiful ball fields make it an ideal setting for a car show. In addition on Saturday, there will be a street event, a garage tour and a driving event with the dinner on the days leading up to the show. Register early because space will be limited. All of the profit from the show will be donate to the Lake Havasu High School Athletic Program. Music will be a band or disc jockey under the tent.
