LETTER FROM THE EDITORS | WELCOME TO OUR 62ND DESIGN ANNUAL

2025 brought my third grandchild, and I’m sometimes asked if I have a favorite. I answer diplomatically: I love them all equally — each unique, each mine. Recently, as a podcast guest, I was asked which of the 62 years of GDUSA magazines is my favorite. I gave the same diplomatic answer.

GORDON KAYE AND SASHA KAYE-WALSH ARE EDITORS AT GDUSA Comments, suggestions and letters can be sent to editorial@gdusa.com.

But that’s not entirely true — at least about the magazines. I do have a favorite: January 1998. The design was a bit crude — more newspaper than magazine in those days — but the content was stunning That issue featured an industry forecast by several “up-and-coming” designers, including Sean Adams, Noreen Morioka, Lana Rigsby, Jennifer Sterling, Sharon Werner, and Bill Oberlander. It also included an exclusive panel discussion on the state of graphic design by — wait for it — Ivan Chermayeff, Lou Dorfsman, Milt Glaser, George Lois, Massimo Vignelli. As star-struck as I am, it isn’t the famous names that move me. It’s watching legends — and legends-to-be — grapple with the technological upheaval of that moment, much as we are grappling today with an array of emerging tools and technologies. A favorite meme: AI can generate a headline, a logo and an existential crisis before breakfast. Their conclusion then feels remarkably current now: amid all the noise, first principles endure. While new forces demand tactical adjustments, the fundamentals remain unchanged. The brain is still the ultimate design tool, and great design communicates the essence of a brand, product, service, idea, or cause. Lana Rigsby’s words have stayed with me: “Design isn’t about how something looks. It’s about what something is.” I bring this up because today’s thought leaders often claim that something fundamental is again transforming the role of designers — change or die, the old rules no longer apply, originality is a luxury. Yes and no. Yes, speed and flexibility are increasingly prized. But no: none of this undermines the graphic designer’s core reason for being. The winners of our 62nd American Graphic Design Annual make that clear. At its best, graphic design still makes information, culture, and values visible, understandable, accessible, and aesthetic. The 2025 GDUSA Design Annual is living proof. The numbers alone are striking: more than 6,000 entries, distilled into a few hundred showcased pieces. Together, they reflect the countless ways great design shapes business and society, commerce and culture. Just as inspiring is the sheer breadth of the thing — established creative leaders alongside emerging talent; print and packaging alongside video and apps and websites; Fortune 500 brands, nonprofits, agencies, studios, students; red states and blue. So much talent from so many places for so many clients, but one shared truth: design that solves problems and makes real intelligence visible still matters. As for my grandchildren — know that I love you all equally. At least so far. Though sharing your cookies with me wouldn’t hurt. -- GK GDUSA 2

AMERICAN GRAPHIC DESIGN AWARDS

8 GDUSA

We present our 62nd anniversary showcase of roughly 650 pieces — the cream of thousands of entries — that reflect the many ways in which graphic designers serve and shape commerce, culture and causes. Winners run the gamut from traditional to new media; from inspirational assignments to bread and butter projects; from large creative agencies and departments to boutique design studios and freelancers and student work from leading schools; from established stars to rising newcomers; and from red states to blue. So much talent from so many places for so many clients, but one shared truth: design that solves problems and makes real intelligence visible still matters. The showcase appears here as well as in our digital magazine and at our popular gdusa.com website.

Gilda Gala Invitation Design by Bluecap Studio This year’s Gilda Gala celebrates laughter, courage, and community with bold style and a wink to Hollywood’s wild side. Hosted at the iconic Andaz Hotel in West Hollywood, a legendary landmark on the Sunset Strip known for its rock ’n’ roll history, the event merges glamour with grit. The invitation’s vibrant, punk-inspired artwork channels the fearless spirit of Gilda Radner, whose legacy of humor and resilience continues to inspire. The striking design, complete with oversized purple shades and electric pops of color, embodies the evening’s message: “Cancer is not a solo performance.” Like the Andaz itself, the gala promises a night of unforgettable energy, creativity, and community—where laughter remains the loudest act of defiance.

International Mass Timber Conference Campaign For the International Mass Timber Conference in Portland OR — the world’s largest gathering of mass-timber professionals, bringing together foresters, manufacturers, designers, builders, and policymakers — the team at Bluecap Studio delivered a comprehensive brand refresh and design system. We began with an update to the logo and built a brand identity rooted in the textures and materials of mass timber, while highlighting the people who shape its growing community. The expanded color palette draws from natural hues found in wood and the surrounding flora, grounding the brand in authenticity

and warmth. Our work extended across all platforms, including a coordinated advertising campaign for social media, digital, and print channels, as well as cohesive templates, wayfinding, and event signage that unified the visual experience throughout the venue. The results were immediate and measurable — attendance and sponsorship increased by 15%, awareness of the conference expanded significantly, and advance sales for the following year rose sharply. Based on these outcomes, the client retained us to continue our partnership and lead creative development for the 2026 event. GDUSA 43

Hybrid: Curiosity In All Things For nearly 25 years, San Francisco-based multidisciplinary design studio, Hybrid Design, has translated eclectic interests and deep curiosity into impactful design for clients like Nike, The North Face, Pinterest, Sonos, and YouTube. Now, the studio has collected two decades of that work and philosophy in its first book, Hybrid: Curiosity in All Things, published by Victionary. The book delivers thoughtful, razor-sharp essays about the nature of their creations and processes, driven by the conviction that seemingly disparate interests are essential to fulfilling work. Across nearly 650 pages, featuring real project examples and a collection of insightful essays from the Hybrid Design team, the studio charts how a broad and eclectic range of interests, hobbies, and experiences can be translated into powerful design work across any subject or discipline. What’s more, they distill the idea that in design, it’s essential to connect with the world around you. Design is a powerful synthesis that solves a creative problem within the context of culture; it doesn’t exist in a vacuum, so creating solutions within the context of culture is essential. GDUSA 51

Hospitalitarian: Bruce White’s Legacy This book is a biography of Bruce White, one of Marriott’s first franchisees and an icon in the hotel business. He developed a philosophy and methods that made a significant impact on both the success of his own hotel and restaurant properties and on the industry

itself. To bring that to life, we featured his many buzzphrases, sayings (“Bruce-isms”), and memorable quotes in attention-grabbing breakouts, plus layouts displaying stunning hotel and resort images, and sidebars listing his “Rules of the Road” for how to run a hospitality property. GDUSA 55

MUTANT Rebrand, Brand Identity & Packaging Design The MUTANT® rebrand redefined the brand’s presence with a bold, irreverent identity designed to command attention on-shelf and set a new standard in the sports nutrition category. The refreshed visual system captures the authentic “hardcore vibes” of the Mutant brand DNA. Through distinct character-coding, unified packaging design, and efficacy-led storytelling, MUTANT reinforces its credibility and performance-first “hardcore” ethos over fleeting flavor trends while amplifying perceived value.

The packaging design utilizes boundary-pushing varnish, substrate, and printing techniques that attract, differentiate, and amplify perceived value. The packaging transformation sharpened the brand’s personality, elevated its competitive edge, and positioned MUTANT for stronger recognition and expansion across both the U.S. market and internationally. ~ C. Day of Design 2025 at Auburn CADC In fall 2025, the Auburn University College of Architecture, Design and Construction celebrated its 5th Day of Design. This year’s identity explored fabrication across six disciplines: architecture/interior architecture, environmental design, graphic design, industrial design and landscape architecture. While some fields in CADC fabricate physically, others practice forms of making rooted in assembly, craft, iteration and translation. The poster comprised three layers of translucent vellum, inviting viewers to physically experience the act of building. The bottom layer featured the word FABRICATION in white vinyl; the middle layer introduced a network of “webbing” —an abstract representation of cognitive and creative connection; and the top layer carried the event’s information. A clean sans serif typeface — with rounded interiors inspired by CNC routing paths — created a qui-

et nod to digital-to-physical fabrication methods. Together, the layers revealed fabrication not just as a process of construction, but as a way of thinking, connecting and making meaning. The saddle-stitched program with vellum cover echoed the poster’s transparency, layering and reveal. Inside, the grid served as both organizational device and subtle texture. Vinyl elements were applied to the cover—bringing the tactile language of fabrication directly into attendees’ hands. From social graphics and invites to signage, T-shirts and stickers, the identity embraced both analog and digital workflows. Scanned vellum textures appeared alongside precise vector systems; hand-applied vinyl lived alongside plotted line work. By emphasizing process as much as product, Day of Design celebrated the shared language of making that connects the college’s disciplines and fuels its culture of experimentation. GDUSA 79

BnShroum Branding Design Rooted in Heritage, Reinvented for Tomorrow. BnShroum introduces a category-shifting coffee concept to Qatar and the region, blending traditional craft with the emerging world of functional mushrooms. Its mushroom-infused coffee featuring White Fungus, Maitake, Chaga, Cordyceps, and Shiitake is positioned not just as a beverage, but as a wellness ritual focused on energy and cognitive clarity. As Qatar’s first “mushroom pouch,” the brand seeks to redefine coffee for consumers who want both flavor and function. The design challenge for art director Souhayeb Grayaa of Paradigm Advertising & Marketing was to create an identity that communicates this duality: culturally rooted yet forward-thinking, familiar yet unprecedented. The resulting system draws from Arabic letterforms to create a mark that feels both typographic and symbolic. The top curve evokes a mushroom cap, while the negative space forms the stem. This creates a

visual metaphor for the fusion of nature and craft. A subtle coffee-mug silhouette is integrated into the structure, reinforcing the product’s core offering without disrupting the icon’s elegance. A suite of 3D elements and stickers expands the identity, transforming the logo’s internal geometry into expressive assets. These forms add movement, depth, and playfulness, allowing the brand to communicate with a modern and energetic voice across environments. From social content to outdoor applications and motion graphics, these assets become extensions of the brand’s story, focused on innovation, wellness, and cultural authenticity. Overall, the visual language positions BnShroum as more than a product launch. It represents the beginning of a new lifestyle category that brings together tradition, science, and contemporary design while creating a narrative that connects consumers to both what they’re drinking and why it matters. Future Standard Branding Future Standard was launched in 2025 as the unified brand of FS Investments and Portfolio Advisors — two firms with deep expertise in private markets and a shared ambition to redefine access, insight, and partnership. The rebrand did more than merge two businesses; it introduced a modern, confident identity designed to lead with clarity in a complex category. At the core of the Future Standard identity is a purposeful design system that emphasizes clarity, consistency, and conceptual storytelling. The Future Standard logotype serves as both a name and a declaration. It embodies a mindset of continuous anticipation and innovation, reflecting a commitment to serving clients with excellence. Typography plays a central role in expressing this philosophy — distinctive, versatile, and highly legible, it anchors a brand driven by content and built for longevity. The visual system brings intellectual depth and emotional resonance to the brand. Across every application — from advertising to fund materials — the system maintains cohesion while allowing flexibility. It was intentionally crafted to support a wide range of content and communication needs, adapting seamlessly across digital, print, and experiential touchpoints. The result is a brand that feels both modern and enduring, precise yet human. Future Standard’s visual identity is more than a representation of the organization—it expresses a belief system. Through thoughtful design and disciplined execution, the brand establishes a distinctive presence in private markets: confident, clear, and built to last.

Premium Leather Goods Email Campaigns for ORSYN by Delicate Matter A series of email campaigns by Delicate Matter for ORSYN highlight the brand’s elegant and understated approach to luxury. Each campaign balances minimal copy with elevated visuals, showcasing timeless leather pieces through clean layouts, refined typography, and a sophisticated color palette. The design language is quiet on purpose, yet never dull: softness, spacing, tone, and intentional restraint move in harmony, creating a sense of trust, re-

finement, and visual ease. The result is a set of communications that feel less like promotions and more like curated brand moments, reflecting ORSYN’s ethos of quiet luxury and thoughtful design. Every detail matters: not a pixel, not a word, not a shade exists by accident. Each element is deliberately chosen to create harmony, elevate the product, and make elegance feel as natural as breathing.

Adam & Eve Good Time Fun BunchDesign We’ve been advised since childhood to shy away from talking sex too openly. But to stimulate Adam & Eve’s toy line sales, that taboo was the very thing we had to undress. In order to rewrite anything that my be “dirty” about this brand, we pushed what their products are really made for: fun. The strategy was simple. Rouse a smile, drop the audience’s defenses, then open the door to play. Enter the Goodtime Fun Bunch: a cheeky, cartoon crew proving just how silly it is to treat pleasure toys as something scary. An open invite to anyone ready to swap shame for fun. 128 GDUSA

Nicka K PR Gift Box Designed by Shuairen Wang of Nicka K New York, an acclaimed multidisciplinary visual and packaging designer, the Nicka K PR Box integrates structural design and visual identity into a cohesive system addressing the brand’s long-standing challenge of fragmented presentation across diverse product categories. Shuairen developed a modular internal structure, with each compartment precisely planned according to product size, weight, and display angle to ensure stability throughout shipping and unboxing. A reinforced double-layer exterior enhances durability while supporting a multi-layered, sequential unfolding experience. Within this structural framework, Shuairen introduced a visual system that reflects the brand’s core characteristics — quirky, bold, youthful, sleek, and inspiring. Modern typography, balanced layouts, and high-contrast color applications reinforce the brand’s distinct personali-

ty while maintaining a polished, contemporary aesthetic. The graphic system is closely aligned with the structural flow, guiding users through an intuitive, narrative-driven unboxing experience. The visual strategy is further tailored to younger audiences. Bright accent colors, concentrated visual focal points, and compositions optimized for social media platforms enhance shareability and amplify the box’s digital impact. As a result, the PR Box functions not only as a presentation vehicle but also as a strategic communication asset for expanding brand reach. By balancing structural clarity, visual cohesion, and targeted brand expression, Shuairen’s design resolves prior inconsistencies across the product portfolio and establishes a unified, compelling identity for Nicka K. The project elevates brand recognizability and positions the company more competitively among emerging consumer audiences. GDUSA 137

Dymatize Expo & Tradeshow Exhibit Dymatize is a leading brand in the active and sports nutrition categories. When designing the experience for their expo booth, we had the opportunity to address a set of unique needs. How do we communicate effectively, from fabrication and design alone, that this brand is at the forefront of science-based nutrition while remaining true to its roots in gym culture? How do we do that while also addressing the need to distribute product samples, give away merchandise, manage foot traffic and flow, and ensure there is an area for social media activation and journalism? All of this had to happen within a 10-ft-by-20-ft area. Then came the visual concepts and fabrication techniques that could convey the brand’s “science meets athletics” positioning.

We landed on a look that is a hybrid of high-end retail experiences and what we called “a refined industrial” vibe. With the help of our fabricator, Dimension Craft in Chicago, the wall frames contain vertical neon tubing, set inside cages of powder-coated steel and hexagonal steel mesh, creating a “wall with depth” and illuminating the interior of the booth. We designed LED “neon” signage and extrusions for the brand slogan and brandmarks that are attractive and contemporary. The result is an expo and tradeshow experience that screams at you from 100 yards away, grabs your attention and never lets go, and invites you to stay awhile and do some push-ups and pullups in its ultra-cool, neon-bleached gym-esque interior. MUWI Fest by Adri Torres Visual artist, illustrator and designer Adri Torres (@adritorres_art) has won the Poster Category 2025 at the Graphic Design USA Awards for his illustrated poster series created for MUWI – La Rioja Music Fest. The award recognizes Torres’ artistic authorship and visual direction behind a collection of posters developed for the festival’s ninth edition, featuring Spanish music artists such as Rozalén, Carolina Durante, and León Benavente. The project stands out for its strong visual identity, bold color palette, and a cohesive graphic system that allows each artist to have a unique visual representation while maintaining a unified language across the entire series. Conceived and executed entirely by Adri Torres, the posters combine illustration, composition, and art direction to create a contemporary and expressive interpretation of live music culture. De-

veloped for a local music festival in La Rioja, Spain, the MUWI posters demonstrate how independent, artist-led work rooted in a regional context can achieve international recognition. The series reflects Torres’ interest in visual storytelling, connecting music, place, and identity through illustration. Originally from Spain and based in the United States for several years, Adri Torres has built an international career spanning the animation film industry and commercial projects. He has collaborated with major U.S. studios such as Marvel Studios, Disney, Netflix, and Warner, while also developing brand-driven and editorial work as an illustrator and motion graphic artist for clients like Pepsi, Facebook, and Nintendo. His work reflects an artist-led practice with growing international reach. GDUSA 155

Future Standard Insights The Future Standard Insights platform was created to deliver clarity, consistency, and depth across the firm’s thought leadership. Built on a unified framework that considers audience, depth, structure, elements, frequency, and shelf life, the system ensures every piece — from Private Market Outlooks and Macro Outlooks to Whitepapers, Reports, and Mapping the Markets — communicates with intention and precision. A defining feature of the design system is its conceptual illustration approach. Each publication features original artwork crafted to visualize the central theme or idea of the piece—translating complex market dynamics into clear, compelling visual narratives. These illustrations are not decorative; they serve as conceptual anchors, helping audiences quickly grasp the essence of the content while adding a distinctive and recognizable layer to the Future Standard brand. Typography, layout, and data visualization work in harmony with these illustrations to create a cohesive experience across all Insight materials. The result is a collection that feels both analytical and human—capable of expressing expertise with accessibility and visual sophistication. Through this thoughtful system, Future Standard’s Insights have become more than just reports; they are a consistent and elevated expression of the firm’s perspective, designed to inform, engage, and endure. Future Standard collaborated with agency Small Crowd.

Maze Surface Pattern This project was developed as a collaboration between Astek and ArtCenter College of Design to create original surface patterns for commercial wall coverings. Inspired by construction sites and floor plans, we turned their geometry into a maze pattern that pairs architectural structure with the tactility of real materials. The textures are site-sourced and hand-made, then composed digitally. We then took charcoal rubbings across campus from wood, steel, concrete floors, cutting mats, and painted walls, and layered them in Adobe Photoshop with a light spray paint pass to build depth and an unmistakably analog feel. This approach intentionally merges physical experimentation with digital composition, showing how hands-on mark-making can push contemporary pattern design. The final blueprint-inspired maze carries authentic, place-based texture and a personal hand, making it especially suited for interiors where geometry, material, and narrative work together to shape atmosphere. It is both commercially viable and distinctly authored. GDUSA 175

SGS Website 2025 Smith Gee Studio (SGS), is a Nashville-based architecture, interior design, and urban design firm which set out to design a new website that did more than showcase our work — it was designed to reflect how we think. Guided by our new core ethos, “think. Place.”, the site communicates the rigor, curiosity, and care we bring to every project, and how our role as placemakers shapes communities through thoughtful design. We approached the content with the same intentionality we bring to our architecture. Instead of relying on tired industry jargon or generic descriptions, we crafted language that invites

engagement. Each section draws the reader into the narrative, reflecting SGS’s collaborative spirit and holistic design process. Rather than speaking to our audience, we speak with them — elevating the conversation and affirming our belief that meaningful design begins with thoughtful dialogue. The result is a website that captures the clarity of our purpose and the full expression of our new brand refresh — from typography and color to voice and vision. More than a digital portfolio, it is a reflection of our unique identity: confident, intelligent, and committed to designing places that inspire, connect, and endure. GDUSA 193

Book Cover Design for Branding As A Cultural Force by Robin Landa The most powerful brands don’t just capture attention — they ignite change. Branding As A Cultural Force: Purpose, Responsibility, and Resonance (Columbia University Press, December 2025) invites readers to reimagine branding as a force for good, one that shapes culture, sparks movements, and drives meaningful social impact.

The book cover was designed by Amaya Grullon-Hernandez, a student in Robin Landa’s Promotional Design course at Kean University’s Robert Busch School of Design. Amaya was supervised in this award-winning project by Robin Landa and Deborah Ceballos. GDUSA 229

2026 SALARY TRENDS FOR CREATIVES: WHAT’S DRIVING COMPENSATION BY LUCY MARINO

In today’s creative employment market, compensation trends are more than just numbers. They signal which creative skills and roles are driving business impact. While overall salary growth for creative and marketing roles is steady but modest, projected to average 1.5% in 2026, many roles and specific skillsets are seeing higher increases. For both creative professionals and hiring managers, this is a moment to take stock. Which skills are rising in value? What trends do you need to know to position yourself or your team for success in a landscape shaped by AI, digital complexity and evolving expectations? Let’s explore three trends impacting creative compen-

230 GDUSA

sation in the 2026 Salary Guide From Robert Half and what they mean for creatives who want to stay ahead of the curve. 1. Specialized Skills Create A Premium Pay Tier Our research shows that 78% of creative and marketing leaders offer higher salaries to candidates with specialized skills than to those without them in the same role. In particular, employers are paying more for people who can strategize and deliver outstanding digital experiences, adapt quickly to new AI and automation tools, and leverage data for creative decisions. These aren’t purely technical skills. Generative AI, for example, blurs the line between hard and soft skills. Knowing the tools isn’t enough — professionals need the judgment to use them well.

Take a designer using Adobe Firefly or Midjourney. AI tools like these accelerate production, but can’t replace human judgment in concept, brand consistency and design decisions. That still takes human insight. TAKEAWAY FOR EMPLOYERS: Hiring someone with advanced skills may require offering a higher salary but they often deliver faster results and broader impact. They need less training, solve complex challenges quickly and often mentor others— boosting your upskilling efforts and your team’s overall capability. TAKEAWAY FOR PROFESSIONALS: Advanced skills are your ticket to higher pay. Pick a niche aligned with market trends — UX optimization, digital design, AI-powered design tools — and go deep. Along your learning journey, keep modifying your portfolio to tell the story of your impact, not just your abilities. Highlight the difference you’ve made. 2. Roles That Bring Harmony To Complexity On The Rise Creative and marketing teams face unprecedented complexity: more channels, more data and higher expectations. Navigating these demands isn’t only about mastering tools or channels — it’s also about orchestration. Teams need specialists — experts in strategy, brand design, and UX — to both deliver at a high level and connect the dots. They need professionals who can make complexity feel simple, ensuring every touchpoint, from social to web to email, feels intentional

and visually connected. That’s why salaries are rising for creative roles that can manage digital complexity. UX designers who collaborate across disciplines to build seamless digital experiences for audiences, for example, are increasingly essential. Designers who bring cohesion to multi-platform storytelling through dynamic visuals are also in demand. And professionals who translate data into creative strategies that drive performance often see pay bumps. TAKEAWAY FOR EMPLOYERS: Invest in creative orchestrators—those who can unify design, strategy and execution across platforms. TAKEAWAY FOR PROFESSIONALS: Strengthen skills that bridge channels and disciplines. Roles that connect design, data and strategy are in demand. 3. Total Compensation Matters With 80% of creative and marketing leaders concerned about meeting candidates’ pay expectations, many are rethinking how they structure offers. Half of hiring managers say adding benefits and perks will be a key recruiting strategy in 2026. What’s resonating with candidates? Financial incentives like bonuses and stock options top the list. But flexible work arrangements, family and caregiving benefits, and professional development support also carry serious weight. TAKEAWAY FOR EMPLOYERS:

LUCY MARINO IS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE MARKETING AND CREATIVE PRACTICE AT GLOBAL TALENT SOLUTIONS FIRM ROBERT HALF, WHICH CONNECTS EMPLOYERS WITH SKILLED MARKETING, CREATIVE, DIGITAL, ADVERTISING AND PUBLIC RELATIONS PROFESSIONALS TO MEET THEIR SPECIALIZED RECRUITING NEEDS. MARINO MANAGES STRATEGY AND OPERATIONS FOR THE COMPANY’S MARKETING AND CREATIVE TALENT SOLUTIONS TEAMS ACROSS U.S. LOCATIONS.

With salary growth slowing, show candidates what makes your offer special beyond the paycheck. Competitive pay is still key, but pairing it with strong benefits, meaningful perks and other rewards can really set you apart and make your offer hard to ignore.

UX/UI DESIGNER: $119,000 VISUAL DESIGNER: $94,500 Looking Ahead

TAKEAWAY FOR PROFESSIONALS: Think beyond base salary. Total compensation including items like benefits, hybrid work options and development opportunities can add up to more long-term value than a slightly higher paycheck.

Whether you’re building a team or advancing your own career, understanding what drives compensation in 2026 is the first step toward staying ahead. Creatives with advanced skills in digital design and experience with AI and automation tools are pulling ahead fast.

What Can Creatives Expect To Earn In 2026? The 2026 Salary Guide From Robert Half provides projected starting salaries for key roles across 7 professional fields, including creative and marketing. The figures below represent national starting salary midpoints for key creative roles.

For employers, the price of not having those people is often greater than the cost of hiring them. For creative professionals, the message is clear: to stay ahead, keep tabs on the latest trends and build expertise in a highly in-demand discipline. The creative industry isn’t standing still, and neither should you.

To get salary data specific to your market, use the Salary Calculator located within the guide.
