LETTER FROM THE EDITORS | 62ND PACKAGE DESIGN SHOWCASE DEFIES GRAVITY
Whatever your politics or economics, it is fair to say that the first quarter of 2025 has been uncertain and unsettling. Just the kind of sentiment that invites caution. That is why the remarkably strong participation in our 62nd anniversary package design awards competition — in terms of quantity and quality — is notable. As you will see, our showcase features 250 winning pieces — selected from many times that number — celebrating the importance of packaging to advance the brand, tell the story, amplify the experience, make an emotional connection with consumers at the GORDON KAYE AND SASHA KAYE-WALSH ARE EDITORS AT GDUSA Comments, suggestions and letters can be sent to editorial@gdusa.com.
moment of truth. Why a response that seems to defy gravity? Effective package design has always added value. But this is its moment to shine: vital as an antidote to the ephemeral world in which we live and brand and market, crucial as a difference maker at the point of decision and affirmation; and responsive to fast-changing demographics, lifestyles and purchasing patterns. Start with the energy and ferment around package design — add the unique business opportunity it presents — mix in the courage, resilience, proactivity and pride of our community — and you have the recipe for an annual showcase that is an exceptional. - SKW THE WEBSITE IS DONE!?! On April 1, we launched our redesigned website. After experiencing the process, a popular meme comes to mind: “The website is done. False. The website is never done.” As many of you know up close and personal, designing a website is complicated, with lots of moving pieces, conflicting demands, unintended consequences, and budgetary surprises. As we continue to work through our own ‘punchlist’, I have greater respect than ever for designers and developers. And a deeper understanding of the Buddhist teaching that all is impermanence and finality is just an illusion, something I learned from The White Lotus, Season 3. We undertook this project for all the right and necessary reasons: to

freshen the look, enhance functionality, improve user engagement, better align with branding, improve the mobile interface, boost traffic and, yes, contribute to revenue growth. GDUSA began as a print news magazine in 1963; news and information remains our primary mission, and — though we continue to treaure our print edition and shape a role for it — a digital age requires that a state of the art delivery of time sensitve content. One surprise I did not see coming: the new site has galvanized our team, created a new sense of personal and professional connection, and sparked a flood of new ideas about how to better serve the creative community. We believe the redesign is an upgrade in form and function — bright, lively, intuitive, welcoming, engaging, and participatory. Early traffic data suggest the web folks nailed it. In the end, that is for you all to determine and, if you have the time or inclination, we would love to hear from you at editorial@gdusa.com - GDK HIGHEST HONORS In 2025, we continue the tradition of compiling our favorite art and design schools and programs. Always an important pillar of the creative professions, these institutions play a critical role at this moment when students are challenged to master the trifecta — design fundamentals and disruptive technologies and soft skills — in order to survive and thrive. Our list includes many of the traditional elite schools dedicated to design; a number of notable public and private universities; and innovative online or hybrid programs for graduate, undergraduate or continuing education. The selection is informed but ultimately subjective, influenced in part by our own long relationships with creative leaders, educators, administrators, hiring managers and recruiters. The list is alphabetical. The reach is national. The theme is personal growth and renewal of the profession. - GDK/SKW SIGN OF THE TIMES In 2023, we were honored to have Cesar Rivera as a GDUSA Person To Watch. A US Army veteran, he earned a BA and MA from Texas State University, has won more than 50 awards from leading organizations and publications in advertising and design, is now AIGA National Board Chair and President, and joined the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in July 2020 to lead the Visual Design Branch. Cesar writes: “It is with a heavy heart to announce the FTE team I was leading and I have been released from government service at the CDC. I have been with the agency for just under 5 years and the division I worked in was a wonderful team of dedicated professionals, also all released, who worked tirelessly through everyday project requests and emergency responses such as measles, COVID, mpox, and Ebola to name a few. Thank you to all those at the agency that collaborated with the team and me to improve the visual health communications that helped to protect that lives of people in the US and across the globe. It truly was a wonderful experience
and I hope we get to see each other in the future. Let me know if I can connect you with any of the talented design or illustration team members.” - SKW GDUSA 6

FRESH | DESIGN ARMY’S SERPENT-FORWARD CAMPAIGN Design Army has conceived a serpent-forward campaign for Morphe‘s Forbidden cosmetics collection that presents as an AI and reality-based mashup. “The campaign is designed for the younger generation - so we intentionally used AI to capture their imagination,” says Pum Lefebure, chief creative officer and co-founder of the agency. “We imagined this whole new world that’s quasi-futuristic, lush, and paradisical. Yet, we wanted it to be believable so we combined it with real elements. The result is a cool, unique mixed-reality with bold visuals. It’s definitely not the usual beauty campaign.” A reimagined Garden of Eden tempts “makeup-loving baddies” with an array of sumptuous makeup and vibrant fruits where makeup itself is the forbidden fruit. The campaign seeks to capture the essence of seductive beauty. A baddie Eve and a dramatic Serpentine companion explore an array of makeup; both exude a captivating attraction; and as Eve is being seduced, they unveil the allure of the Forbidden Collection. Explains Lefebure: “We started with a photoshoot featuring real props, models, and Morphe’s products. Every crazy detail was considered in art direction, including actual fruit and custom-created ‘Forbidden’ typography spiked with thorns. Then AI was used to enhance, with global inspo fueling the creation … Layered painterly-style, the lush, vivid mixed-reality nails the makeup’s delish, ethereal palette and vibe.” To give the packaging a pop, the product’s colors are playfully integrated into the seductive design. And a virtual-reality bent makes the concept drip with sparkle and juice. Tempting names are meant to add a witty twist: “Forbidden Honey,” “Pulp Fantasy,” “Love Bite,” and “Lust Potion.”

FRESH | Carlyle Tools Rebrands For Those Who Choose The Trades
Carlyle Tools, a NAPA-owned brand, is going full-throttle with an extensive brand relaunch and new campaign by creative agency The Variable. Entitled “Built Different,” the branding not only changes the look and feel but the entire strategic foundation as the skilled trades face a generational shift. With baby boomers retiring and Gen Z questioning the traditional four-year degree path, Carlyle is taking a leadership role in championing the next wave of technicians. The Variable helped develop a positioning for Carlyle that aligns with these young techs - ambitious, unrelenting, and unapologetically carving their own path. At the core of the campaign is a strategic reframing of Carlyle’s role: not just as a supplier of tools, but as a badge of honor for those who choose the trades. Says Jamie Walton, EVP, Chief Merchandising Officer at NAPA: “We didn’t just update our logo - we overhauled how Carlyle shows up in this space. Our all-new product line was designed with the next generation of technicians in mind, with tools that are built to last and uniquely tailored to modern technicians who need efficiency and durability.” Adds Matt Cook, SVP, Group Creative Director at The Variable: “We didn’t just want to make Carlyle louder - we made it matter. We created a brand that doesn’t just speak to young techs, it speaks like them. Built Different isn’t a tagline; it’s a challenge to every old-school convention in the industry.” The rebrand is anchored by a “fierce” new visual identity, including the Sabertooth logo - a kinetic character mark symbolizing razor-sharp precision and untamed power. Other notable visual elements: aggressive typography, grit-forward color palettes like Venom Green and Gritty Gray, and new packaging, POS and merch. Finally, The Variable partnered with the Carlyle team to design The Outlaw, a traveling showroom-on-wheels. The Outlaw seeks to deliver an immersive brand experience, allowing customers to touch, feel, and try out the tools surrounded by the messaging. The “Built Different” campaign is rolling out nationwide this Spring across digital, social, video, retail, and in-person activations.

FRESH | PMG BREAKS STORY OF HEARST DIGITAL EXPANSION Hearst Newspapers has launched a multi-market ad campaign that promotes the power of its journalism, beginning with two of Hearst’s leading news brands — the San Francisco Chronicle and Houston Chronicle. Created in partnership with PMG, recently named Hearst’s creative and media agency of record, the campaign, “There’s More with the Chronicle,” highlights the local coverage and digital innovations that can connect readers to their communities and to the world. To that end, PMG’s creative team transformed each publication’s video and photography into a collection of imagery to bring the campaign to life. Beyond the textures and settings of each city, they seek to highlight the Chronicles’ modern storytelling capabilities such as live trackers and interactive maps that offer a real-time view of each city. PMG says that the campaign is part of a multimillion-dollar, multi-platform investment in brand building across Hearst’s businesses and is a key component of the company’s broader investment in its newspaper business, alongside its recent acquisition of the Austin American-Statesman. The message emphasizes the role of local journalism and digital experiences to provide deeper engagement. Says Andrew Harper, executive creative director, PMG: “We wanted to capture the energy and unique relationship between two world-class cities and the people who call them home... In San Francisco and Houston, there’s so much to be discovered to get the most out of your city.” Future campaigns will extend to the Times Union of New York’s Capital Region, the San Antonio Express-News, and Hearst’s Connecticut news brands. Each market will tailor the “There’s More with…” message to the coverage areas that matter most to its readers. The campaign is supported by a strategic media mix combining Hearst-owned assets with paid media that spans billboards, linear tv, streaming services, connected tv, radio, podcasts, and digital ads.

FRESH | MTA ON BOARD WITH NEW NYC SUBWAY MAP The Metropolitan Transit Authority’s Creative Services Mapping Department has released the first fully redesigned New York City subway map in half a century. Although the map is new in many ways, the creative team drew inspiration from previous editions including using a similar geometric and diagrammatic aesthetic introduced to the NYC Subway with the iconic 1972 Massimo Vignelli diagram and revived by Waterhouse Cifuentes; and preserving the official brand colors established by the 1979 and 1998 Hertz maps. Like many major subway systems, the MTA team leaned into a diagrammatic style, employing bold, straight lines easier for the eye to follow and more suitable for digital users. The white background, bold colors, horizontal writing and use of black dots are said to make the map more ADA-friendly and easier for people with low-vision or cognitive disabilities to read. The designers also focused on text legibility, keeping text on one line wherever possible and making better use of open space to alleviate crowding while using a black subway bullet with a white character for maximum contrast. The legend is also more detailed and includes accessibility, transfer and safety information, plus a QR code that leads users to the MTA website. The new subway map for weekdays, late nights, and weekends is already displayed on station digital screens and soon will be onboard select cars. Replacing physical maps in the remaining subway cars will be done in phases over the coming weeks. The historic Vignelli map was iconic to design connoisseurs - voted one of the greatest projects of the 20th century by GDUSA readers back in 2013 - but was also harshly criticized for not being true to the actual geography and street grid above ground.

FRESH | JKR SPARKS WALMART BRAND REFRESH
Walmart has adopted its first brand refresh in decades which the company says reflects an “evolution as a people-led, tech-powered omnichannel retailer.” The refresh has been primarily executed by Jones Knowles Ritchie (JKR) while Landor has worked on in-store design. Among the key features: The wordmark is inspired by Sam Walton’s classic trucker hat and brought to life with a modern, custom font; a spark symbol that is intended to exude the energy of Walmart and remain a beacon that guides customers through all facets of the Walmart experience; a tweaked color palette — True Blue and Spark Yellow — that leans on the retailer’s most recognizable tones and its heritage of blue, while ushering in new updates; and a relatable and approachable tone meant to be representative of customers who shop with Walmart, whether conveyed through brand voice, illustrations or photography. JKR officials state that “the refreshed brand identity supports everything Walmart offers - from affordable prices to digital and health services. It emphasizes the role Walmart plays to an ever-evolving customer and their changing wants and needs, while honoring Walmart’s heritage and spirit of innovation. From the famous Spark symbol, now updated to be as dynamic as the people Walmart serves, to a wordmark drawn from Sam Walton’s iconic trucker hat, it all supports a distinctive, digital-first experience, that’s authentically Walmart. The new look generated a degree of social media scorn — some would say ‘hate’ — focusing on the similarity of the new look to the old one with changes imperceptible to all but the cogniscenti. The pushback: brand refreshes often involve subtle refinements and adjustments, like these, that taken together add up to a fresh look and feel. 15 GDUSA

in Visual Communication Design — a BA program in Art History, and three MFA programs. Students have the best of both worlds, pursuing rigorous studio-based disciplines with a liberal arts university environment. Visual communication design students learn how to design static and interactive work, which can include motion graphics, product packaging, and advertising pieces. The program encompasses all visual languages used to communicate, and classes on design theory, methods, and history align with practical work with real clients by senior year. Designers in this program are able to think critically about how to tell a story using design elements rather than words, and to consider not only how work looks, but also about how people will interact with it. hartford.edu/academics/schools-colleges/art/default.aspx UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS CHICAGO SCHOOL OF DESIGN CHICAGO IL
At the University of Cincinnati, communication design students receive a foundation in visual problem solving. The core of the curriculum is a series of sequential design studios. These courses help students develop critical and visual thinking along with essential design processes. Students also have opportunities to further develop in the specific areas of graphic design, interaction design and motion design. Students reinforce their skills in the field through several co-ops. Professional communication designers build careers wherever communication is important. Designers often work for design firms, internal design teams, or as independent freelancers. They have career opportunities in branding and corporate identity, digital product design, exhibit design, interface design, motion graphics, package design, service design, user experience design, and web design. Today’s designers may be found working in the healthcare system improving health, or for governments and NGOs impacting society. daap.uc.edu/academic-programs/school-of-design/communication-design.html

AMERICAN PACKAGE DESIGN AWARDS SPONSORED BY FEDRIGONI SPECIAL PAPERS AND MOHAWK
In this moment of challenge for makers and marketers — short term economic uncertainty and long term media evolution — our 62nd anniversary showcase defies gravity. Nearly 250 winning designs by talented creative professionals for many leading companies and brands, selected from many times that number. It is a testament to the power of pack-aging to convey the message, tell the story, advance the brand, amplify the experience, make the difference. We celebrate beauty, of course, but more crucially, the power of effective and strategic design to forge a human connection before, during and after the sale.

CREATIVE JOBS IN 2025: DESIGN SKILLS EMPLOYERS NEED RIGHT NOW BY LUCY MARINO
In 2025, creativity is converging with technology, and companies are searching for talent that thrives at the intersection. Businesses are investing in artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning and hyper-personalized customer experiences. However, new research from Robert Half reveals that 56% of creative and marketing leaders say their teams have skills gaps, and 59% said the impact of those gaps has increased in the past year. That could be where you come in. But landing a job in today’s employment market isn’t always easy. Demonstrating a blend of sharp design skills with an eye for user experience and emerging tech can help you get noticed by hiring managers.
DESIGN SMARTER: THE SKILLS EMPLOYERS ARE LOOKING FOR TODAY Design has always been about problem-solving and storytelling, but in 2025 the scope is broader than ever. Designers aren’t just shaping visuals; they’re shaping user experiences, driving engagement and collaborating with data and AI tools to make their creative solutions more impactful.
According to Robert Half’s Demand for Skilled Talent report, the most in-demand marketing and creative roles include graphic designers, UX designers and marketing analytics specialists. That’s because companies want creatives who can: MASTER CROSS-PLATFORM DESIGN Think mobile-first, responsive layouts and cohesive branding across web, social and apps. THINK LIKE A USER UX skills are in hot demand. Even if you’re not a full-on UX designer, knowing how to make user-friendly designs gives you an edge. WORK WITH DATA, NOT AGAINST IT Marketing is increasingly data driven. Understanding how design impacts metrics like engagment and conversion rates can set you apart.
EXPERIMENT WITH AI TOOLS Whether it’s generating concepts with DALL·E or using Canva’s AI features, employers want creatives who aren’t afraid to explore new tools.

EXPERIMENT WITH AI TOOLS
HIGHLIGHT AI EXPERIENCE AND EXPERTISE
Whether it’s generating concepts with DALL·E or using Canva’s AI features, employers want creatives who aren’t afraid to explore new tools.
AI is now baked into most design workflows, so employers want to know you’re not stuck in 2015. You don’t need to be an expert, but showing you can use AI tools gives you an edge. Create a few assets using Midjourney, Canva or DALL-E, then tuck them into your portfolio with a line about how you used the software. It shows you’re not afraid of new tech, which matters — 25% of leaders say their teams lack AI strategy skills.
HOW TO GET NOTICED: 6 JOB SEARCH IDEAS FOR 2025 How do you make your application compelling to hiring managers when you’re looking for a new position? Here are some tips: UPDATE YOUR DIGITAL PROFILE Your portfolio isn’t just a gallery of your past projects — it’s a reflection of how you think. Hiring managers want to see how you approach your work. Include a few projects as case studies that walk through your design choices, user considerations and even challenges you overcame. For the portfolio itself, consider using interactive formats like Webflow or Figma prototypes to better showcase web or app designs. Whatever format you choose, ensure it’s simple to navigate and mobile-friendly — a clunky site can quickly create a negative impression. PICK UP RELEVANT CERTIFICATIONS An Adobe Certified Expert badge shows you’ve mastered the tools most designers use daily. Or try a short UX design course—even an entry-level one from a site like LinkedIn Learning or Coursera can teach you how to think about users, a perspective employers value. Certifications aren’t so much about collecting qualifications as it is proving you’re curious and ready for what’s next. CONNECT WHERE CREATIVES HANG OUT Big networking events can feel overwhelming, and you really don’t need them. Instead, find places where designers already gather—online forums like Behance or Slack communities like Designer Hangout, for example. Share a recent project with a quick note about what inspired it or how you solved a problem. Maybe comment on someone else’s work with a kind word or a question. It’s less about selling yourself and more about joining the conversation. You never know who’s watching—a creative director might spot your post and reach out.
TAILOR YOUR PITCH TO THE JOB When you apply for a role, look at the job posting and pull out one or two desired abilities the employer lists that match your skills. Maybe they want someone who’s good at web design. If you’ve created a website you’re pleased with, mention it briefly in your email or cover letter, saying something like “I’ve worked on responsive web projects like the one you’re hiring for.” It’s a small touch, but it shows you’re paying attention and not just blasting out generic applications. ASK FOR FEEDBACK ON YOUR WORK Reach out to a designer you respect— someone you follow online, perhaps, or know from a past job. Share a piece you’ve created and you’re proud of. Ask for feedback. Go beyond “thoughts on this?” and ask a targeted question like “Does this design flow logically for a user?” or “How would you have approached this layout differently?” It’s easier for people to respond when they know what kind of feedback you want — and it signals that you’re serious about improving. *** Today’s hiring managers seek new approaches and viewpoints in job applicants, not just technical skills. Whether you’re eyeing a permanent position or a contract role, showcase your creative vision. Don’t be afraid to put your work out there. The companies hiring aren’t just looking for talent — they’re looking for fresh perspectives. And yours could be precisely what they need.is telling a story that sticks—in just a few seconds. Focus on designing content that matches your brand’s personality, whether a quick tip, a behind-the-scenes moment or something fun and shareable.
