About Sutton High School Situated in a spacious green site close to excellent transport links, Sutton High School is an academically selective independent school for girls aged 3 to 18 which provides a broad and challenging curriculum for girls.

Strikingly positive relationships between the girls and their teachers, both within the classroom and beyond, make a significant contribution to the quality of the girls’ academic and personal development. Our girls feel safe and cared for in a warm and secure environment which gives them the space to develop a strong sense of who they are and their place in the community. Frequent leadership opportunities at all levels of the school enable our girls to become articulate, confident and resilient adults.

Our Sixth Form Centre, is designed to equip students for the transition to university-level study. It provides specialist teaching rooms, a dedicated ICT suite, art studio and extensive space for independent study as well as a fitness suite and a large common room.

Sport, music and drama feature prominently within the school’s rich extra-curricular provision and facilities include a newly-refurbished indoor swimming pool, dance studio, sports hall and two large performance spaces in which the girls are able to participate in concerts and drama productions at the very highest levels.

The Girls’ Day School Trust Sutton High School was founded in 1884 and shortly after became part of the Girls’ Public Day School Trust (GPDST).

Today, the GDST is the leading network of independent girls’ schools in the UK. A Charitable Trust that owns and runs 24 schools and 2 academies in the UK, it invests all its income in its schools.

Since its foundation in 1872, the GDST has been at the forefront of education for girls and a strong voice in promoting opportunities for young women. Through the GDST Alumnae network this continues after the girls leave school.

Choosing an All Girls’ Environment Evidence and experience shows that girls work better, develop more readily, and have more confidence in themselves in an environment where the self-consciousness of childhood and adolescence are less intense. The All Girl environment is special; they learn, develop and grow as young women, in a mutually supportive atmosphere.

It provides girls with the opportunity to explore and succeed in a wide variety of subjects and activities, through female-centred teaching strategies and the absence of social distractions and the inherent stereotyping. Academic Summary A Level Results 2013 We are delighted with the examination results at Sutton High in 2013. Once again our girls achieved a 100% A Level pass rate, with 8 girls achieving straight A*/A grades. All girls have the opportunity to study for the EPQ (Extended Project Qualification) and 22% of girls gained A*.

GCSE Results 2013 3 girls achieved straight A* grades in 9+ subjects, with a further 19 gaining straight A*/A grades. In the first year of the school introducing the harder IGCSE specification in Sciences, 70% of grades in IGCSE Biology were A* and 85% A*/A. There were similarly strong results in Chemistry and Physics. 80% of English Literature grades were A*/A and in IGCSE Maths 49% were A* and 76% A*/A grades.

The Senior School Academic Life At the heart of our educational offering is ‘personalised learning’. We are committed to the education of all girls to provide them with the choices, challenges and opportunities to succeed and achieve their potential in everything they do. Our curriculum is broad based enabling us to be flexible in our approach.

We build on the values and skills that the girls have developed in Junior School encouraging them to continue to be independent thinkers and to develop the confidence to seize opportunities and take risks. There is provision for all our girls which ensures that extension opportunities are in place and a specialist LDD teacher provides support for girls with learning difficulties.

In Year 7 all girls study Maths, English, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, History, Geography, Computer Science, Music, Religious Studies, Art, DT, Drama, Life Skills (our specially devised PSHCE programme) and PE. Girls also choose to learn two modern languages from a choice of French, German and Spanish. Latin is introduced in Year 8.

At GCSE, the school offers a broad range of subjects, including more demanding but rigorous IGCSE courses in Maths, English and the Sciences. In addition to these compulsory subjects girls study at least one Modern Language and choose up to four further options including the option to take three separate Sciences. We base the timetable each year around the preferences of the girls.

Transition into the Sixth Form is a natural progression for our girls who value the variety of A Level subjects offered to them. A specially tailored study skills course prepares students for the Extended Project Qualification

and launches the majority of our girls to Russell Group Universities.

A Level subjects offered include Economics, Government and Politics, Sociology and Psychology.

Beyond the classroom We place strong emphasis on encouraging girls to take part in extra-curricular clubs and activities during their time here. This is their opportunity to explore new ventures and challenge themselves with no boundaries or limitations being put on them. Our aim is to offer a broad range of pursuits at all stages of the school. In the Sixth Form all girls take part in voluntary work in the community, with opportunities ranging from helping disabled children at The Children’s Trust, Tadworth Court, to getting involved with Riding for the Disabled.

Clubs and activities take place during lunchtime or after school, ranging from Samba Band to Amnesty International, from Dance to the Duke of Edinburgh‘s award scheme. We hold a joint Choir practice with the boys and staff from Sutton Grammar School each week, hosting a biennial musical production and an annual Christmas concert.

Girls are offered the opportunity to travel further afield with recent trips to Iceland, the Galapagos Islands, Lille and Barcelona having taken place. Many girls embrace the adventurous challenge of the month- long Outlook Expedition, travelling to Africa in Summer 2014.

Residential trips to enhance language learning include our exchange programme with a school in Tübingen, Germany for our Year 10 German linguists.

Pastoral Care Pastoral care is given a very high priority at Sutton; the staff know their pupils extremely well and are adept at helping them take advantage of the opportunities provided by the School. The Pastoral team works closely together to provide high quality and consistent care.

We develop a safe and supportive environment where girls can learn from their mistakes and celebrate and share their successes.

Girls entering Year 7 become part of Lower School.

Your daughter’s academic progress and pastoral well being will be monitored by the Head of Lower School and the Head of Year 7. From Year 10 onwards, girls enter Upper School and will be under the supervision of the Head of Sixth Form and Upper School.

Friendship and team work are developed and encouraged throughout the Senior school. A Buddy and Mentoring programme is in place in the Senior School and the House systems and School Councils ensure vertical integration at all ages and stages of school life.

A rich and meaningful programme of PSHCE promotes understanding, respect and tolerance and enables all girls to flourish and to grow into confident young adults believing in themselves.

Frequent assemblies are a characteristic of our school life and address moral issues and provide us opportunities for informed decisions to be made. Whilst a multi-faith approach is adopted, girls have many opportunities to develop their spiritual awareness.

The School has a full time Nurse and is able to call on the services of a School Doctor. A highly qualified Counsellor is available, under referral guidelines, on a part-time basis.

Relationships with home We believe that home and school should work closely together in order for girls to flourish and achieve their academic potential.

We keep parents up to date with school information and their daughter’s progress through regular reports, parents’ evenings, weekly newsletters and notices. All weekly communications are sent home electronically by email. We encourage parents to embrace school life by joining us to enjoy the talents and successes of their daughters at the many concerts, plays, sporting events and competitions which take place.

We receive generous support from our Parents’ Association who raise funds and organise many social events and gatherings for our parents. In addition, there are two further Associations who support the school in Swimming and Gym: Otter who run swimming coaching and Centipede who provide gym coaching and other opportunities for girls and parents.

The School Day School begins at 08.25 with registration and ends at 15.40. Girls have a 20 minute break in the morning and then a lunch break between 13.10 and 14.10. The school day comprises 8 lesson periods each of 40 minutes.

Policies and Procedures Whole School Policies set out clear guidance and expectations about behaviour. Every new family is given an Information Pack when they join the school. This includes our policies on Anti-bullying, Exclusions, Safeguarding and our Complaints Procedure. Copies of these and other policies are available on our website or upon request at any time.

The Admissions Process Senior School Sutton High School is an academically selective day school for girls and entry at each stage of the school is competitive.

At all stages of entry into the school and prior to any assessment, we must have received a completed Registration Form (see tear out form at the back of this booklet) and a Registration Fee of ÂŁ75 (ÂŁ100 for overseas candidates). This fee is waived for girls transferring from another GDST school.

Joining the Senior School We encourage all girls and their parents to visit our Senior School for a tour and to meet with Mrs Crouch, prior to registering and sitting an assessment.

Entry at 11+ into Year 7 At 11+ entry we welcome an additional intake of girls, offering a maximum of 78 places across 3 forms. Places are offered based on the results of our 11+ Entrance Examination, which is set by the School and for which past papers are not available.

The Examination comprises papers in Maths, English – (Comprehension and Creative writing) and Non-Verbal Reasoning which is computerised. All girls sitting our Entrance Examination also have a ‘one to one’ interview with one of our senior teachers.

The 11+ Entrance Examination for entry into Year 7 in September 2015 will take place on Friday 14th November 2014. All offers will be announced in December 2014.

The closing date for applications to sit our 11+ Entrance Examination for September 2015 entry is Tuesday 30th September 2014.

The 11+ Entrance Examination for entry into Year 7 in September 2016 will take place on 13th November 2015. The closing date for applications to sit this examination is Wednesday 30th September 2015.

Occasional Places in Senior School Occasionally places are available in the Senior School.

If you are interested in a place in the Senior School please contact Mrs Filby, our Admissions Secretary, on 020 8225 3001 or c.filby@sut.gdst.net. Mrs Filby will advise you if a place is available and arrange for you to come and visit the school. Following this visit, an

assessment will be arranged which will consist of papers in Maths, English and Verbal Reasoning. All girls will have a ‘one to one’ interview with the Head of Year.

Entrance to Year 11 is not normally possible.

Moving into the Sixth Form Transfer from Year 11 to Year 12 is seen as normal progression at Sutton High School. Girls in Year 11 are guaranteed a place in Year 12. Girls are encouraged to apply for the following Sixth Form Scholarships: Academic, Art, Drama, Music and Sport, according to their ability and talents.

Entry to the Sixth Form at 16+ Places in the Sixth Form are offered based on an interview with Ms Clark, Head of the Sixth Form, and a formal assessment. We expect girls entering the Sixth Form to achieve a minimum of 8 GCSEs at grades A*-C. Girls will be expected to achieve an A* or A grade in the subjects that they wish to study at A Level and a C grade at AS in the subjects they wish to continue at A Level.

International Students We welcome applications from students who are permanently resident outside the United Kingdom.

Overseas candidates undergo the same entry assessments as UK residents. In some instances, we will ask students to sit an EAL paper to assess their English language skills. We can arrange for overseas candidates to sit our assessment papers at their current school abroad.

However, we would strongly recommend that the student visits Sutton High School prior to accepting a place to join the school.

EAL Support We are extremely proud of the language support that we are able to offer to overseas students joining us at Sutton High School. We have experience in teaching and supporting students who may need extra English tuition and our EAL team also arranges coffee mornings and events for other members of students’ families who might also like support with their English. Provision is also made for overseas students to sit public examinations in their native language e.g. Mandarin or Japanese. Girls with strong linguistic ability or native speakers may also take subjects such as French, German, Spanish earlier than they would normally do so.

Scholarships Scholarships are awarded on merit, irrespective of financial means, and are typically 10% of the annual school fees. Those who are awarded scholarships, which carry considerable prestige both inside and outside the school, will normally continue to hold the award for their entire school career. It is possible to be awarded both a scholarship and a bursary.

11+ Entry Academic and Performance Scholarships in Art, Music and Sport offered at 11+ entry. Academic scholarships are awarded based on performance in the 11+ Entrance Examination. Our Performance Scholarships are assessed separately. Applications and nominations for Performance Scholarships need to be made by 10th November 2014 for entry in September 2015.

The value and number of scholarships awarded are made at the discretion of the Headmistress.

16+ Entry The Sixth Form Scholarship examination will take place on Saturday 27th September 2014 for entry in September 2015.

Performance Scholarship assessments will take place during the w/c 29th September 2014 for entry in September 2015. Please contact the Admissions Office to register for Scholarship Assessments.

Bursaries These are available for girls joining us at 11+ and 16+.

Their award is based on academic merit and the income and financial resources of the candidate’s family. Bursary applications are assessed by GDST Head Office and the final award, based on the GDST assessment, is made at the discretion of the Headmistress.

Bursary application forms are available from the Admissions Office. We strongly advise Bursary applications to be made as early as possible.

The Junior School Academic Life In Junior School we stretch the boundaries of the National Curriculum at all levels and prepare our girls for the rigours of 11+ Entrance. As girls enter the school in our Nursery through to Year 6 they are taught specialist subjects such as Music and PE by a team of specialist teachers. A range of Modern Languages are taught by specialists with all girls studying French from the age of 3. In Years 3 and 4, girls have the opportunity to learn Spanish and then in Years 5 and 6 we introduce Latin and German. Our girls enjoy using dedicated resources in terms of food technology labs, art studios, science labs, our indoor swimming pool, dance studio and music house. Extended opportunities are provided when girls take part in Class Assemblies, group performances and whole school concerts and plays. This allows them all to develop their talents to the full. A specialist LDD Co-ordinator ensures that support is available for girls with learning difficulties.

Beyond the Classroom In Junior School a wealth of exciting clubs are available; those girls who are green-fingered can enjoy the delights of Gardening Club, while others can lose themselves in the ‘world of words’ in Scrabble Club. In Junior School, girls choose their clubs at the beginning of each term.

Day and residential trips (Y4 upwards) provide the girls with memorable experiences that support and extend their work in the classroom. We are lucky to be located in such a central position, with easy access to London, for exhibitions, museums and the theatre and other areas of the country for exploring.

Pastoral Care The Junior School is a nurturing place where girls are encouraged and rewarded with ‘positive praise’. Our weekly ‘Gold Book’ Assemblies are eagerly awaited by the girls, as is the weekly award of the House Bear to the House with the most points and they all embrace the reward schemes in their classes. A special Annual Prize Giving in the summer term, ensures that all our girls’ talents are celebrated and recognised.

The School Day Junior School: Nursery 1 and 2: Half day sessions – 08.25 to 11.25 or 12.15 to 15.15. Extended Half day morning sessions 08.25 to 12.30 including lunch. Full day – 08.25 to 15.15.

Reception and Year 1: 08.25 to 15.15 Year 2: 08.25 to 15.20 Years 3 to 6: 08.25 to 15.30 In Junior School, lessons begin at 09.00 and girls have a morning break of 20 minutes and a lunch break of 1 hour 10 minutes. Girls in Year 1 and 2 have a short afternoon break.

Toddler Group We run a Group for little ones ( boys and girls up to the age of 3) to play and for parents and carers to enjoy a chat and refreshments with friends. From time to time, we will also offer a range of specific activities run by our team of Early Years Teachers to include Music and PE. The cost is £3 per session and includes the full use of our Toddler Group facilities and refreshments for you and your little ones. Toddler Group takes place every Thursday morning (term time only) from 9.30am to 11am.

Tops and Tails - Before and After School Care We provide a full wraparound care service for Junior School pupils between the ages of 3 and 11. Housed in purpose-built accommodation it allows parents to park on site and to drop off and pick up their daughters. We offer planned activities in a homely, relaxed environment. For the first hour, girls in Year 3-6 do their homework in the quieter environment of the ‘Homework Club’ before joining the younger girls in the main Tops and Tails room. Computers are available for use by all the girls.

Care is available from 7.30am until the commencement of the school day. Girls are accompanied to their classes in time for morning registration. Care is also provided at the end of the school day until 6.30pm. Younger girls attending the afternoon session will be collected from their classrooms.

A healthy breakfast is provided which includes fruit, fruit juice or milk, yoghurt, cereal and toast. Tea is served in the afternoon and a healthy variety of options will be offered. Girls will regularly have cooking sessions when they will prepare their own snack using fresh ingredients.

The Admissions Process Joining our Junior School At the first stage we encourage everyone interested in joining our Junior School to visit the school and meet with Mrs Cooper, the Head of the Junior School. We will tailor the visit to your requirements and based on the year of entry that you are considering for your daughter.

This is the best way for you to get a feel for the school, to see our girls and staff at work and for you to ask those all important questions.

We hold Open Mornings throughout the year, when our Year 6 girls provide tours of the school and Mrs Cooper is available during the week for more personalised tours.

Our Junior School Open Mornings for the coming academic year are: Wednesday 21st May 2014 at 10am Thursday 2nd October 2014 at 10am Thursday 12th November 2014 at 10am Wednesday 14th January 2015 at 10am

Entry to the Junior School in Reception to Year 6 In Reception we are able to offer 40 places across 2 forms. Places available in Reception depend on the number of girls moving up from our Nursery. All new girls applying for a place in Reception will have an informal assessment, for which no preparation is needed and we treat this very much as a ‘play session’.

Assessments will take place in January 2015 for entry in September 2015.

At 7+, Year 3, we are able to offer an additional 8 places across the year group. Girls wishing to join us at this stage will have a formal assessment when they will be asked to undertake short tests in Maths and English and they will have an informal interview with Mrs Cooper.

Occasionally we have places available in Years 1 to 6. These places are offered following a more formal assessment when girls will be asked to undertake short tests in Maths, English and Reasoning and all girls will have an informal interview with Mrs Cooper. We manage a waiting list system when Year Groups are full.

With all assessments, we are very much looking for potential rather than the current level at which a girl is working.

Junior School offers are always made in writing, as quickly as possible following an assessment.

Entry to the Junior School in Nursery We welcome girls into our Nursery as they are rising 3 and they are able to join us the half term before their 3rd birthday. Informal assessments comprising a play session with girls of a similar age take place throughout the year. Girls joining us in the Nursery will normally be guaranteed a place into Reception at age 4+.

Transferring to the Senior School Transfer from the Junior School (Year 6) to Senior School (Year 7) is anticipated and encouraged. All girls in Junior School are guaranteed a place in Senior School and this is confirmed in writing in the Summer Term of Year 5.* All Junior School girls will sit our 11+ Examination on 14th November 2014 for entry in to Senior School in September 2015.

All girls sitting this examination will be considered for the Academic Scholarship at 11+. *unless otherwise notified by Mrs Cooper in Year 5

School Fees Fees per annum for 2014/2015 Junior School Nursery 1 and 2 (full time) - £8,760 Reception to Year 6 - £11,505 Senior School and Sixth Form - £14,787 Fees cover the regular curriculum, school books, Examination entry (not re-sits) stationery and other

materials. Fees do not include school lunches. School lunches are mandatory for all girls in Reception to Year 11 (inclusive). Lunches for Nursery 1 and 2 are charged on a pro rata basis (depending on the number of sessions a child attends). Lunches for Nursery to Year 4 cost £588.20 per year. Lunches for Year 5 and above cost £622.80 per year.

Payment of Fees Fees may be paid annually or termly in advance, or by monthly instalments (four per term). All fees must be paid by direct debit. The GDST also offers a prepaid scheme for which details are available on request.

Entrance Registration Fee and Deposit A non-refundable registration fee of £75 (£100 for overseas candidates) is charged for taking the Entrance Examination/Assessment and is not transferable from one entrance year or sibling. A deposit of £500 is charged on the acceptance of a place and will be retained until the pupil leaves the school. The deposit will not be refunded if the place is not taken up.

Notice The GDST gives at least one term’s notice of any increase in fees. Fees for the following academic year are issued in the April. Likewise the GDST requires a full term’s notice of the withdrawal of a student or one term’s fees in lieu of notice.

Girls giving notice to leave at the end of a school year, other than Year 13, must do so on or before the first day of the Summer Term. Having given notice, girls leaving in Year 6 or Year 11 would need to re-apply for a place in Year 7 or Year 12 should they decide to remain at Sutton High School at a later date.
