How do ADI engineers find leaks in Leeds? On the eleven local jobs, ADI's engineers used pressure testing on all eleven, tracer gas on nine, a damp meter on eight and acoustic listening on seven. Most jobs combine several methods, because each one confirms what the others suggest. Acoustic listening equipment picks up the sound escaping water makes at a pipe breach, through floors, walls, concrete and paving. Thermal imaging cameras show the warm path of a leaking heating or hot water pipe, provided the system is running and up to temperature. Tracer gas (a harmless hydrogen mix) goes into the water pipe under low pressure, and a probe picks it up where it escapes at the surface. Pressure testing and moisture meters confirm that a system is losing water and map the damp it leaves behind.
