The Obituary
Rev. Fred (Frederick) Baylor, Jr.
Rev. Fred Baylor, Jr., (affectionately known as Frederick), age 73, transitioned to be with the Lord on November 25, 2025, at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, Maryland, after a lengthy illness. His wife of over 30 years, Nadine Baylor, was by his side.
Rev. Baylor was born to the late Fred and Gladys Baylor in Washington, D.C. on December 24, 1951. He was a devoted friend, a dedicated public servant, and a faithful member of his church and the community.
Frederick was educated in The Public Schools of The District of Columbia, graduating from Dunbar High School on June 17, 1971. He, along with his brothers, were known for striving for excellence as was evident when he was commissioned as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Washington High School Cadet Corps in September 1970.
After graduation from high school, Frederick completed his undergraduate studies at Georgetown University located in Washington, DC, where he received his Bachelor of Arts (BA) Degree in Government and American Studies. In addition to his BADegree. In May of 2003, a Master Degree was confirmed by Howard University School of Divinity of Washington, DC. He further obtained biblical and spiritual training at the National Bible College in Fort Washington, MD.
Rev. Baylor was a hearer and a doer of God’s Word! He oversaw the Missions and Social Service Ministries at Mount Jezreel Baptist Church in Silver Spring, MD under the leadership of the then Senior Pastor, Rev. Eldridge Spearman. This ministry included Home and Foreign Missions, Evangelism, SocialAction, Project Care, Community Outreach Programs and several other ministries. He was known for preparing tasty meals and assisting in distributing food to those less fortunate.
Pastor Spearman’s vision for Missions allowed Frederick and others to make several missionary journeys to Uganda, Liberia, Guyana, San Paulo, Brazil, Krakow Poland, Durban and SouthAfrica (SA) where they had the opportunity to minister in several of the townships of Claremont, Pinetown and Qumasha, ZA.
In addition to his love for the children of SouthAfrica, Fred and his wife have also focused on children within the church. Their home was always open and often visited by Selena, Sherrita, Sean, Myles, Madison, Danee’, JW, Joel, Johnathan, Natasha, Mojay, Danielle, Laila,Ava and others. Their home was thought of as a place of safety, fun, learning, and creativity.
Fred worked for many private companies offering information technology (IT) solutions, including IBM.After his IT journey, he decided to go into security as a special police officer under many contracts with the Federal government. He retired in 2017.
In addition to ministry, he was passionate about reading, watching the Washington Commanders (Redskins) win, watching movies and CSI type shows, and last, but certainly not least, he loved
decorating Christmas trees. He would save the last ornament for the first visitor to place on the tree. Interestingly enough, it was always the same person ~ Sharon Powell (lol).
He is survived by his wife Nadine (of 33 years) and his sister Lorraine Barnett. Fred was preceded in death by his parents Fred Baylor, Sr. and Gladys Baylor and siblings, John Miller, Evelyn Scott, Joyce Baylor, Alfreda Baylor, and Benjamin Baylor. Also, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who were more like family.

A Beautiful Reflection
Dear Mom Nadine and Baylor Family,
I'm so sorry to hear about the passing of Rev. Baylor. My heart goes out to you and your family during this difficult time. I wish I could be there to pay my respects in person, but unfortunately, I'm in South Africa and won't be able to attend the funeral.
I wanted to share with you that Rev Baylor has been like a father to me since 2003, when I was just 6 years old now, I’m 28 years old. He loved me as his own daughter, and I've cherished every moment we've shared over the years. His kindness, guidance, and love have meant the world to me, and I'll always be grateful for the impact he's had on my life.
People who know me call me Joy, and when they ask where I got that name, I tell them my father from America gave it to me. I love it so much, and it's a reminder of the special bond we shared. It's a name that's brought me so much joy, and I'll always treasure it.
He was planning to visit soon and I'm heartbroken that he didn't get the chance to meet his two grandchildren here in South Africa. I've been trying to reach him since last year. I've left multiple emails and voicemail messages not knowing I'll be receiving this devastating news.
Please know I'm thinking of you and sending my deepest condolences. May you find strength and comfort in your memories and loved ones.
Continue resting in Peace my father may the angels go with you till you reach the gates of Heaven.
With Love
Nthabiseng Joy Dhlomo and Family
