INTRODUCTION

EINLEITUNG

The Science Film Festival is a celebration of science communication and enjoys a unique position in Southeast Asia, North Africa and the Middle East: In cooperation with local partners it promotes science literacy and facilitates awareness of contemporary scientific, technological and environmental issues through film and television content with accompanying educational activities. The festival presents scientific issues accessibly and entertainingly to a broad audience and demonstrates that science can be communicated in an educational, as well as entertaining manner. The event has grown considerably since its first edition in 2005, becoming the largest event of its kind and one of the biggest film festivals worldwide in terms of audience reach.

By facilitating cooperation between local and international agencies from the scientific, cultural, educational and environmental sector, with the generous support of the international film and television community, an effective infrastructure is put in place for the dissemination of scientific understanding and access to knowledge. All films are synchronized into local languages to offer viewers access to the content without language barriers. During the festival period, the films are screened non-commercially in museums, schools, universities and other educational venues through coordinated efforts of partners with existing networks and the capabilities to organize such screenings. The festival offers a platform for cultural exchange through which different approaches to the world of science converge.

Das Science Film Festival bringt Wissenschaft auf die Leinwand: unterhaltsam, kreativ, spannend – und immer lehrreich. Mit dem Ziel, naturwissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse einem breiten Publikum zugänglich zu machen, genießt das Festival in Südostasien, Nordafrika und dem Nahen Osten einen hohen Stellenwert. Gemeinsam mit Partnern vor Ort sorgt es dafür, aktuelle wissenschaftliche, technologische und ökologische Fragen in die Öffentlichkeit zu bringen.

Transportiert werden die Inhalte dabei über Film und Fernsehen – und zwar auf eine Weise, die auch schwierige Sachverhalte verständlich und zugleich unterhaltend präsentiert.

Die Resonanz ist groß; seit der ersten Ausgabe 2005 sind die Besucherzahlen enorm gestiegen, so dass es inzwischen das weltweit größte Festival seiner Art ist.

Realisiert wird das jährlich stattfindende Science Film Festival mithilfe von lokalen und internationalen Akteuren aus dem Wissenschafts-, Kultur-, Bildungs- und Umweltsektor und mit der großzügigen Unterstützung der internationalen Filmund Fernsehgemeinschaft. Diese effektive Zusammenarbeit erleichtert den allgemeinen Zugang zu Wissen und fördert das Verständnis für wissenschaftliche Themen. Das beginnt ganz praktisch: So werden beispielsweise alle Filme synchronisiert, um Sprachbarrieren zu vermeiden. Partner und Netzwerker vor Ort organisieren Filmvorführungen in Museen, Schulen, Universitäten oder anderen Bildungsstätten – und machen das Festival damit auch zu einer Plattform für interkulturelle Begegnungen.

ALLGEMEINER ÜBERBLICK In 2015, the Science Film Festival was organised in Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Indonesia, Jordan, Lao P.D.R., Malaysia, Myanmar, Oman, Palestine, the Philippines, Qatar, Russia, Sudan, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates and Vietnam.

Das Science Film Festival fand 2015 vom 1. Oktober bis zum 20. Dezember in unterschiedlicher Länge in Burkina Faso, Indonesien, Jordanien, Kambodscha, Katar, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, dem Oman, Palästina, auf den Philippinen, in Russland, Sudan, Thailand, den Vereinigten Arabischen Emiraten und in Vietnam statt.

The event was an official Collaborating Partner of the UN International Year of Light and Light-Based Technologies 2015 and took place internationally from October 01 to December 20 with local dates varying by country within this period.

The event reached over 750 000 visitors in 14 countries in Southeast Asia, North Africa and the Middle East, as well as pilot screenings in Burkina Faso and Russia. The outcome further strengthens its position as the largest scientific film festival worldwide and contributes to its recognition as one of the most effective science popularization initiatives in the countries in which it takes place.

LÄNDERÜBERSICHT

The Science Film Festival is organized in each country by the Goethe-Institut in close cooperation with local partners. The festival relies on the collaboration and active participation of science education institutions, schools, universities, ministries and cultural centres in each of the host countries, as well as the enthusiasm of their staff and other partners, such as NGOs, educators and student volunteer groups, who facilitate the screenings and activities.

Das Goethe-Institut organisiert das Science Film Festival in den einzelnen Ländern gemeinsam mit lokalen Partnern.

Dabei stehen die Zusammenarbeit und die aktive Einbindung der wissenschaftlichen Bildungseinrichtungen, Schulen, Universitäten, Ministerien und Kulturzentren in den Gastländern im Fokus. Engagierte Mitarbeiter und Unterstützer wie Mitglieder von Nichtregierungsorganisationen, Lehrer und studentische Freiwilligengruppen machen Vorführungen und Aktivitäten überhaupt erst möglich.

BURKINA FASO 1ST EDITION BURKINA FASO 1. VERANSTALTUNGS JAHR The Science Film Festival took place for the first time in Burkina Faso from November 16 to 18. The event was organised by the Goethe-Institut and the Institut de Recherche pour le Developpement (IRD) in cooperation with the University of Ouagadougou. The films were screened at the university and at the Goethe-Institut. After the screenings, lively discussions ensued amongst the predominantly student audience. In total over 200 visitors attended the screenings. The positive feedback encourages all partners to continue and expand the event in Ouagadougou in 2016.

In Burkina Faso feierte das Science Film Festival 2015 seine Premiere. Organisiert vom Goethe-Institut zusammen mit dem Institut de Recherche pour le Developpement (IRD) und der University of Ouagadougou, wurden vom 16. bis 18.

November an der Universität und im Goethe-Institut Filme gezeigt. Ein gelungener Auftakt: Nach den Vorführungen diskutierte das überwiegend studentische Publikum intensiv.

Das positive Feedback ermutigt das Goethe-Institut, das Festival auch 2016 wieder in Ouagadougou durchzuführen.

CAMBODIA 7TH EDITION KAMBODSCHA 7. VERANSTALTUNGS JAHR The Science Film Festival in Cambodia was organised by the Goethe-Institut Thailand in cooperation with the NGO Khmer Youth and Social Development (KYSD), Mlup Baitong organization, Royal University of Agriculture (RUA), American Intercon Institute/School (AII & AIS), Pour Un Sourire D’enfant organization and The Westline School. A selection of five films was screened from November 01 to December 15 at

the Royal University of Agriculture (RUA), American Intercon Institute/School (AII & AIS), Pour Un Sourire D’enfant organization and The Westline School in Phnom Penh. The festival reached 5 163 visitors in Cambodia.

5.163 Besucher – das ist die Bilanz des Science Film Festivals 2015 in Kambodscha, das das Goethe-Institut Thailand in Zusammenarbeit mit der Khmer Youth and Social Development (KYSD), der Mlup Baitong Organisation, der Royal University of Agriculture (RUA), American Intercon Institute/ School (AII & AIS), der Organisation Pour Un Sourire D’enfant und der Westline School organisierte. Zwischen dem 1.

November und dem 15. Dezember wurden bei der siebten Festival-Ausgabe in Kambodscha an verschiedenen Standorten fünf Filme gezeigt.

INDONESIA 6TH EDITION INDONESIEN 6. VERANSTALTUNGSJAHR

In 2015, the Science Film Festival in Indonesia was held from November 12 to 26 and was part of the German Season – an initiative of the Federal Foreign Office in Germany and organised by the Goethe-Institut Indonesia, the German Embassy Jakarta and EKONID in cooperation with BOSCH, Hotel Indonesia Kempinski, BMW, Allianz, DB Schenker, Bayer, Ferrostaal, Lufthansa, Nivea, SAP and Siemens. The event attracted 50 146 visitors from 21 cities in Indonesia. The festival traveled to Aceh, Ambon, Balikpapan, Bandung, Bogor, Depok, Jakarta, Makassar, Malang, Manado, Mataram, Medan, Nganjuk, Samarinda, Serang, Sidoarjo, Sumbawa, Surabaya, Tomohon, Tangerang, Waingapu and Yogyakarta.

The sixth Science Film Festival Indonesia was organised with Allianz as a premium sponsor and made possible through the help of main partners such as the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia, Institut Français Indonesia, Universitas Paramadina, PT. Kuark Internasional, Universitas Kristen Satya Wacana (UKSW), PASCH, Wisma Jerman and Pusat Peragaan IPTEK (Center for Science and Technology Exposure).

Als Teil der „Deutschen Saison“, einer Initiative des Auswärtigen Amts, die vom Goethe-Institut Indonesien, der Deutschen Botschaft in Jakarta und EKONID in Zusammenarbeit mit BOSCH, Hotel Indonesia Kempinski, BMW, Allianz, DB Schenker, Bayer, Ferrostaal, Lufthansa, Nivea, SAP und Siemens organisiert wurde, erwies sich das sechste Science Film Festival in Indonesien vom 12. bis 26. November als Publikumsmagnet. Die Veranstaltung lockte in Aceh, Ambon, Balikpapan, Bandung, Bogor, Depok, Jakarta, Makassar, Malang, Manado, Mataram, Medan, Nganjuk, Samarinda, Serang, Sidoarjo, Sumbawa, Surabaya, Tomohon, Tangerang, Waingapu und Yogyakarta 50.146 Besucher an.

Umgesetzt wurde das Festival in Indonesien mit Allianz als Premiumsponsor und mithilfe von Hauptpartnern wie dem Ministerium für Bildung und Kultur der Republik Indonesien, dem Institut Français Indonesien, der Universitas Paramadina, PT. Kuark Internasional, Universitas Kristen Satya Wacana (UKSW), PASCH, Wisma Jerman und Pusat Peragaan IPTEK (Center for Science and Technology Exposure).

JORDAN 3RD EDITION JORDANIEN 3. VERANSTALTUNGSJAHR

In 2015, the Science Film Festival was organised in Jordan for the third time and was officially opened with a science show in the premises of the Abdul Hameed Shoman Foundation on October 29. The festival programme ran until 26 November with screenings and related activities and experiments.

While the partner organizations provided school and family programmes, the Goethe-Institut focused on film screenings in venues catering to a young children audience and in community centres outside of Amman. These screenings were realized in cooperation with CARE International and the Jordan Hashemite Fund for Human Development (JOHUD) and their so-called “EUREKA-bus”. By using this bus the programme was presented five times outside of Amman. Thus, the programme of the Science Film Festival was also able to reach children from poorer family backgrounds and refugee children who very much appreciated the programme. The

main organisers of the festival were the Children’s Museum Jordan and the Abdul Hameed Shoman Foundation. In total, the event reached more than 10 000 visitors in 2015.

Mehr als 10.000 Besucher schauten sich vom 29. Oktober bis zum 26. November bei der dritten Ausgabe des Science Film Festivals in Jordanien zwölf Wissenschaftsfilme an und nahmen an Aktivitäten und Experimenten teil. Hauptveranstalter waren das Children‘s Museum Jordan und die Abdul Hameed Shoman Foundation, die zum Auftakt eine große Wissenschaftsshow organisierten.

Während die Partnerorganisationen Schul- und Familienprogramme anboten, lag der Schwerpunkt des Goethe-Instituts darauf, die Filme an kinderfreundlichen Orten und Begegnungsstätten außerhalb von Amman zu zeigen. Dies geschah in Kooperation mit CARE International und dem Jordan Hashemite Fund for Human Development (JOHUD) mit dem „EUREKA-Bus“, der fünfmal außerhalb Ammans unterwegs war. Das Programm des Science Film Festivals erreichte dadurch vor allem auch Kinder aus ärmeren Verhältnissen und Flüchtlinge, die dieses Angebot begeistert aufnahmen.

LAO P.D.R. 4TH EDITION LAOS 4. VERANSTALTUNGSJAHR

In 2015, the Science Film Festival reached 14 887 viewers in 42 schools and communities across four provinces in Laos.

The NGO DOKLAO/PADETC has successfully organised the Science Film Festival in Laos since 2012 in corporation with the Cinema Department of the Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism and the Goethe-Institut.

In Laos erreichte das Science Film Festival im vierten Jahr der Teilnahme 14.887 Zuschauer in 42 Schulen und Gemeinden aus vier Provinzen. Die Organisation lag in bewährter Hand der NGO DOKLAO/PADETC zusammen mit der Kino-Abteilung des Ministeriums für Information, Kultur und Tourismus und dem Goethe-Institut.

MALAYSIA 5TH EDITION MALAYSIA 5. VERANSTALTUNGSJAHR

The Science Film Festival Malaysia 2015 was organised by the Goethe-Institut Malaysia in cooperation with Siemens, the Malaysian Nature Society, the Ministry of Education, the German Malaysian Institute and the Association of Science, Technology and Innovation. The festival was officially opened on November 05 at the Golden Screen Cinema in Pavilion, Kuala Lumpur, with film screenings, a press conference and technological demonstrations by project partners. Within the festival period from November 05 to December 11, some 550 screenings took place in schools, colleges, universities and other educational venues across the country through the coordinated efforts of all the partners and reaching 33 000 viewers.

In Malaysia organisierte das Goethe-Institut das Science Film Festival in Zusammenarbeit mit Siemens, der Malaysian Nature Society, dem Bildungsministerium, dem German Malaysian Institute und der Association of Science, Technology and Innovation. Den Auftakt machten am 5. November im Golden Screen Cinema im Einkaufszentrum Pavilion, Kuala Lumpur, Filmvorführungen, eine Pressekonferenz und technische Präsentationen der Projektpartner. Bis zum 11. Dezember fanden im ganzen Land in Schulen, Hochschulen, Universitäten und anderen Bildungsstätten rund 550 Vorführungen statt. Dank der Anstrengungen aller Partner erreichte das Festival 33.000 Zuschauer.

MYANMAR 4TH EDITION MYANMAR 4. VERANSTALTUNGSJAHR

The opening of the festival took place at Goethe Villa on November 14 with over 90 participants from local orphanages and schools. Three screenings were held outside in the garden and the activities were led by volunteers in the main building. In total, 31 screenings were presented during the festival period from November 14 to December 09. The

screenings were organised by the volunteers in Yangon Division, Bago Division, Mandalay Division, Sagaing Division, Mon State, Karen State, Shan State and in Kachin State in government schools, monastic schools, private schools, youth development centres, cultural centres, churches and in orphanages with over 17 000 viewers.

The fourth edition of the Science Film Festival in Myanmar was organised by the Goethe-Institut Myanmar in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany, YMCA, KMC Private School, Wesley Clinic, Metta Foundation and Shan Cultural Centre.

Mehr als 90 Teilnehmer aus Waisenhäusern und Schulen besuchten die Festivaleröffnung am 14. November in der Goethe-Villa. Im Garten waren drei Filmvorführungen zu sehen, im Hauptgebäude fanden Aktivitäten und Experimente statt. Während der Festivalzeit wurden bis zum 9.

Dezember 31 Filmvorführungen in den Regionen Yangon, Bago, Mandalay, Sagaing sowie den Staaten Karen, Shan und Kachin in staatlichen Schulen, Klosterschulen, Privatschulen, Jugendentwicklungszentren, Kulturzentren, Kirchen und in Waisenhäusern angeboten. Es wurden mehr als 17.000 Zuschauer erreicht.

Organisiert hat die vierte Ausgabe des Science Film Festivals Myanmar das Goethe-Institut Myanmar in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Bildungsministerium, der Deutschen Botschaft, YMCA, KMC Private School, Wesley Clinic, Metta Foundation und dem Shan Cultural Centre.

OMAN 1ST EDITION OMAN 1. VERANSTALTUNGSJAHR

In Oman, the film “Beekeeping in Oman” was received with great interest by the viewers. The Science Film Festival was organised for the first time in cooperation with the Oman Film Society and selected films were presented to the public from November 30 to December 02. The festival reached 150 viewers in Oman for this inaugural event.

Die im Oman gedrehte Dokumentation „Beekeeping in Oman“ war einer der ausgewählten Filme, die bei der ersten Teilnahme des Omans am Science Film Festival gezeigt wurden.

Vom 30. November bis zum 2. Dezember besuchten das Festival, das in Kooperation mit der Oman Film Society ausgerichtet wurde, rund 150 Menschen, die sich sehr angetan von der Premiere zeigten.

PALESTINE 3RD EDITION PALÄSTINA 3. VERANSTALTUNGSJAHR

In its third year, the festival was hosted by “Science Days Palestine 2015” once again, where screenings and hands-on activities were organised from October 12 to November 12 in various educational and cultural institutions: Ni’lin Teachers Center, Al Nayzak Science House for Science in Ramallah, Jericho Child Center, Korea Palestine Center in Hebron, Dar Al Tifil Al Arabi and the Palestinian National Theatre in Jerusalem, Cinema Jenin & the Qattan Center for the Child in Gaza, as well as additionally in 30 other locations in 20 Palestinian cities, towns and villages. The official opening of the festival took place in Ramallah on October 12 at the Alharajeh Market.

In Palestine, the Science Film Festival 2015 reached more than 9 300 visitors. It was co-organized by the Goethe-Institut Palestinian Territories, the A. M. Qattan Foundation, the Institut Français, Al Nayzak Foundation and the Ramallah Municipality.

Mehr als 9.300 Gäste zählte das Science Film Festival in Palästina, das im Rahmen der „Science Days Palestine 2015“ durchgeführt wurde. Vom 12. Oktober bis zum 15. November gab es Filmvorführungen, Experimente und Aktivitäten in verschiedenen Bildungs- und Kultureinrichtungen: Ni’lin Teachers Center, Al Nayzak Science House for Science in Ramallah, Jericho Child Center, Korea Palestine Center in Hebron, Dar Al Tifil Al Arabi und Palestinian National Theatre in Jerusalem, Cinema Jenin, Qattan Center for the Child in Gaza sowie an 30 weiteren Veranstaltungsorten in 20 Städten und Dörfern.

PHILIPPINES 6TH EDITION PHILIPPINEN 6. VERANSTALTUNGSJAHR

The Science Film Festival in the Philippines reached an impressive 167 246 visitors across the country in 2015 – an increase of over 60 percent from the previous year record. It has firmly established itself as one of the leading nationwide science and technology initiatives and makes an important contribution to science education in the Philippines.

The success of the festival in the Philippines rests on the support of staunch partners such as the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Science Education Institute, Museo Pambata, The Mind Museum, Manila Ocean Park, Philippine Science Center, National Library of the Philippines, Quezon City Science Interactive Center, ASEAN Centre for Biodiveristy, Coalition for Better Education, Liceo de Cagayan University, Xavier University, CFC Cornerstone, Philippine Society of Youth Science Clubs, Ablan Foundation, Film Development Council of the Philippines, Embassy of the United States of America, German European School Manila, Hanns Seidel Foundation, GIZ Philippines, Anak TV Foundation, FELTA Multimedia and the Department of Education (DepEd).

Das Science Film Festival erreichte 2015 auf den Philippinen beeindruckende 167.246 Besucher – und übertraf damit den Vorjahresrekord um 60 Prozent. Das Festival hat sich als eine der landesweit führenden Wissenschafts- und Technologieinitiativen etabliert und leistet einen wichtigen Beitrag für die MINT-Fächer im philippinischen Bildungssystem.

QATAR 2ND EDITION KATAR 2. VERANSTALTUNGSJAHR

For the second time, the Goethe-Institut organised “Science Film Festival Doha” as a two day programme. In cooperation with the German International School, selected films were screened and content related activities engaged the students of the German International School Doha as well as the PASCH school in Doha. The Science Film Festival reached a total audience of 150 visitors in Qatar for this special screening event.

In seinem zweiten Veranstaltungsjahr erreichte das Science Film Festival in Katar rund 150 Besucher. Das Goethe-Institut organisierte in Zusammenarbeit mit der Deutschen Internationalen Schule wieder ein Science Film Festival Doha als zweitägiges Programm. Dabei schauten Schüler der lokalen PASCH Schule ausgewählte Filme und nahmen an Aktivitäten teil.

RUSSIA 1ST EDITION RUSSLAND 1. VERANSTALTUNGSJAHR In Russia, the Science Film Festival made its debut as part of the German Children’s University in Moscow on November 11.

The event was an activity of the Goethe-Institut at the Russian Science Festival for Children and Youths and took place simultaneously with the first Open-Door Day in Russia of the popular German educational series “The Show with the Mouse”.

During the Children’s University event, Russian children between the ages 6 to 14 were not only able to explore scientific phenomena, but also discover the German language.

More than 1 100 young explorers attended with their parents, grandparents or German teachers from Moscow and surrounding towns to submerge themselves in the world of German science and language for a day. The young science enthusiasts were also able to engage in fun experiments after the screenings.

The Science Film Festival and the first German Children’s University in Moscow were a successful experiment in themselves and demonstrate the potential of thematic approaches to learning German. The event sends positive signals for the launch of the digital German Children’s University planned for 2016 and a continued connection with Science Film Festival screenings.

Die Pilotveranstaltung gibt ein positives Signal für die geplante „Deutsche Digitale Kinderuni“, die 2016 online gehen wird.

SUDAN 2ND EDITION SUDAN 2. VERANSTALTUNGSJAHR

In its second year, the Science Film Festival Sudan was organised by the Goethe-Institut in cooperation with the Al Faisal Cultural Centre. From November 23 to December 20, screenings of festival films took place in several institutes and cultural centres, as well as for the first time in Sudanese universities. In total, the Science Film Festival 2015 reached more than 2 900 students, teachers and university professors in Sudan.

In seinem zweiten Jahr wurde das Science Film Festival im Sudan vom Goethe-Institut in Kooperation mit dem Al Faisal Cultural Centre organisiert. Vom 23. November bis zum 20. Dezember fanden Filmvorführungen in Kulturinstitutionen und zum ersten Mal auch in sudanesischen Universitäten statt. A selection of 23 films were screened at Nanmeebooks Learning Center, NSTDA Thailand Science Park, the Thai Film Archive, the National Science Museum Thailand, NSM Science Square, TK park, City Learning Park Nakhorn Sri Thammarat, Faculty of Science and Technology Chiang Mai Rajabhat University, Chiang Mai University Science Park and through the IPST Traveling Festival at the Science Center for Education in Ekkamai and 18 other science centres throughout the country during the festival period.

UNITED ARAB EMIRATES 3RD EDITION VEREINIGTE ARABISCHE EMIRATE 3. VERANSTALTUNGSJAHR In cooperation with Children’s City, the SciFest Dubai, the Fujairah Media & Culture Authority and the Fujairah Science Club as well as with the Mohammed bin Khalid Al Nahyan Culture Centre in Al Ain, the Goethe-Institut Gulf Region organised the Science Film Festival in the United Arab Emirates for the third time. The festival reached a total audience of 4 000 visitors in the United Arab Emirates during the festival period.

In cooperation with SciFest Dubai and Children’s City the festival was organised as a joint festival, attended by more than 1 000 children and teenagers during six days. On October 09 and 10, the Science Film Festival was presented at the Fujairah Science Club on invitation by the Fujairah Culture and Media Authority. Female and male students from various schools of the Emirate Fujairah watched scientific films and jointly engaged in experiments and activities. In November the festival was invited to the Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalid Al Nahyan Cultural Centre in its premises in Al Ain. During the three-week long festival a total of 1 500 children and teenagers visited the centre. For students of the United Arab Emirates University in Al Ain, the film on OLED, the light-technology of the future, was offered as a special screening, followed by a discussion with experts.

Im November gastierte das Festival erstmals im Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalid Al Nahyan Cultural Centre in Al Ain, wo 1.500 Kinder und Jugendliche über einen Zeitraum von drei Wochen am Film- und Aktivitätenprogramm teilnahmen.

The Science Film Festival took place in Vietnam for the fifth time from October 11 to December 20 at 113 schools in Ha Noi, Vinh Phuc, Thai Binh, Thai Nguyen, Da Nang, Quang Nam, Hoi An, Dak Lak, Ho Chi Minh City with more than 300 screenings. In total, the event reached 36 249 viewers throughout the country, which marks a significant increase over the existing national record and supports the position of the Science Film Festival as a key cultural programme in Vietnam promoting science education and innovative learning.

113 Schulen in den Provinzen Hanoi, Vinh Phuc, Thai Binh, Thai Nguyen, Da Nang, Quang Nam, Hoi An, Dak Lak sowie Ho-Chi-Minh-Stadt waren vom 11. Oktober bis 20. Dezember beim fünften Science Film Festival in Vietnam dabei.

Mit mehr als 300 Vorführungen erreichte die Veranstaltung 36.249 Zuschauer. Dies ist eine deutliche Steigerung gegenüber dem bestehenden nationalen Rekord und unterstreicht die Bedeutung des Science Film Festivals als zentrales Kulturprogramm in Vietnam zur Förderung wissenschaftlicher Bildung und innovativen Lernens.

AUSWAHLJURY In putting together the festival programme, it is crucial to involve experts from partners in each country, who have in-depth knowledge about the local target audience when selecting films. In total, 42 pre-jury members with various backgrounds in subjects related to film production, education and science media from 12 countries participated in selecting the official programme of the Science Film Festival in 2015.

Die Bedürfnisse und Gegebenheiten der Gastländer sind wichtiger Aspekt bei der Filmzusammenstellung. Deshalb werden für die Auswahl der Festivalfilme Experten hinzugezogen, die mit den lokalen Zielgruppen vertraut sind. Ziel des Science Film Festivals ist ein internationaler Gesamtauftritt. Das ist ein anspruchsvolles und zeitaufwendiges Unterfangen: Insgesamt engagierten sich 42 Mitglieder verschiedener Fachbereiche (Filmproduktion, Pädagogik, Wissenschaft) aus zwölf Ländern in den Auswahljurys und damit am Programmkonzept des Science Film Festivals 2015.

The Science Film Festival presents a wide assortment of films in the following four categories: Family Edutainment, Ecology & Environment, Natural Science, Life Science & Technology and Culture & History to serve all age groups, but with a particular focus on content for young audiences.

In 2015, the Science Film Festival received 146 films from 32 countries, of which a shortlist of 52 films from 17 countries comprised the international film selection for the programme in each of the festival host countries. A panel of local science education experts curated the national programmes from the international selection. All films are translated and synchronized into local languages to offer unrestricted access without language barriers.

The festival organizers would like to extend their sincere thanks to all filmmakers, producers and broadcasters for such overwhelming interest and support for the event.

Through their active participation, the festival is able to share the exciting world of science communication through film and television content from around the globe with hundreds of thousands of visitors, whose view of the world is enriched through these films.

The following provides an overview of the films selected in each festival country.

Die Beiträge für das Science Film Festival werden in vier Kategorien unterteilt: Familienprogramm, Ökologie & Umwelt, Naturwissenschaft, Biowissenschaft & Technologien sowie Kultur & Geschichte. Die Filme richten sich an alle Altersstufen, sollen jedoch vor allem ein jüngeres Publikum ansprechen.

Für das Science Film Festival 2015 wurden 146 Filme aus 32 Ländern eingereicht. Aus diesem Angebot stellte die Jury 52 Werke aus 17 Ländern für die internationale Filmauswahl zusammen. Welche Filme davon dann in den Gastländern gezeigt wurden, bestimmten lokale Expertenteams unter Berücksichtigung der Festivalorte und kultureller Begebenheiten. Die Filme wurden in die Landessprachen übersetzt und synchronisiert.

Die Festivalorganisation bedankt sich herzlich bei allen Filmemachern, Produzenten und Sendern für das große Interesse und die Unterstützung des Festivals. Gemeinsam wird Hunderttausenden Besuchern ein außergewöhnlicher Blick in die Welt der Wissenschaft ermöglicht – spannend und lehrreich über Film und Fernsehen vermittelt.

THE PHYSICS OF LIGHT The film takes the viewer on an amazing scientific journey through the physics of light. Focusing on this crucial theme about the nature of the universe, it focuses on Einstein´s life, explaining his thoughts and discoveries through an inventive approach. Engaging sequences presented by the host take the viewer from past to future, connecting ideas and concepts and enriching our understanding of light in a way that is both informative and entertaining. The production uses re-enactments of historical events and figures and an imaginative narration structure to explain the concept of time and the Theory of Relativity exceptionally well. In the International Year of Light 2015, this is an outstanding film on this year’s festival theme.

INTERAKTIVE AKTIVITÄTEN

An integral part of the Science Film Festival is the effort to provide activities that accompany the film screenings. In order to facilitate the young audience in fully appreciating some of the themes explored, there are fun experiments or hands-on learning games offered in relation to the films at screenings, which aim to further make the scientific content accessible.

In regional workshops, which took place in Bangkok and Dubai in 2015, organizers from participating countries exchange and develop ideas on how to incorporate entertaining and educational activities which complement the films.

With this interdisciplinary approach, which is a key strength of the Science Film Festival, the event seeks to provide an effective and enjoyable learning environment.

The purpose of the workshops is to foster an exchange between organizers of the Science Film Festival from the different nations and to consolidate activity ideas as guidelines for all organizers.

On the occasion of the 10-Year Anniversary of the Science Film Festival, the Award Ceremony for the 2014 edition was held in the Centre for New Technologies in the Deutsches Museum Munich on February 26, 2015.

The cooperation between the world’s largest science and technology museum and the world’s largest scientific film festival marked the first appearance of the event in Europe.

In the morning and afternoon, over 250 children from local schools attended stage shows by two popular German edutainment series, “Die Sendung mit der Maus” (The Show with the Mouse) and “Löwenzahn” (Dandelion). The visitors also received guided thematic tours through the various educational sections of the museum.

Dieses Zusammenspiel zwischen den beiden jeweils weltweit größten ihres Fachs – Wissenschafts- und Technologiemuseum und Wissenschaftsfilmfestival – war zugleich der erste Auftritt des Science Film Festivals in Europa. Tagsüber besuchten mehr als 250 Schüler die Bühnenshows der zwei bekannten deutschen Edutainment-Serien „Die Sendung mit der Maus” und „Löwenzahn” und folgten thematischen Führungen durch die verschiedenen pädagogischen Bereiche des Museums.

An extensive evaluation of the Science Film Festival visitors in 2015 was conducted with a comprehensive survey of 28 940 questionnaires filled out impartially by audiences from venues in all participating countries and evaluated by an unbiased party.

Throughout human history, new materials have revolutionized our world. Whenever craftspeople, manufacturers and scientists got hold of new materials it allowed them to create new things that had not been possible before. But what are the next new materials that will change our world?

You could call material science the “study of stuff”!

Just about everything you use every day – the shoes you wear, the dishes you eat from, the phone you use – it’s all made of different kinds of substances. Understanding how the materials are put together, how they can be used, how they can be changed and made better to do more amazing things – even creating completely new kinds of substances: that’s what materials science is all about.

Some materials are so new that the scientists who discovered them hardly know what to do with them – they only know they might yet transform our lives.

Scientists are now turning to computers to design materials and work out their properties before even going anywhere near a laboratory. Some of the newest materials that are getting scientists fired up exist only in theory. The goal now is to make them a reality. But each has the potential to be transformative. In 2016, the Science Film Festival invites audiences to explore the past, present and future of MATERIAL SCIENCE.

Unter dem Titel MATERIALIEN DER ZUKUNFT lädt das Science Film Festival 2016 ein, Vergangenheit, Gegenwart und Zukunft der Materialkunde zu entdecken.

Im Laufe der Menschheitsgeschichte haben neue Materialien die Welt revolutioniert. Handwerker, Hersteller und Wissenschaftler entdeckten Stoffe und entwickelten dadurch Neues. Man könnte Materialkunde das Studium der Stoffe nennen. Gegenstände und Produkte, die wir täglich verwenden, etwa Schuhe, Geschirr oder das Telefon, bestehen aus unterschiedlichen Stoffen.

Wie diese Materialien zusammengesetzt sind, genutzt, verändert und verbessert werden können, um noch erstaunlichere und komplett neue Stoffe zu entwickeln – damit beschäftigt sich die Materialkunde.

Einige Materialien sind so neu, dass die Forscher, die sie entdeckten, noch gar nicht genau wissen, was sie mit ihnen anstellen könnten. Sie ahnen aber, dass sie unser Leben noch verändern werden. Heutzutage setzen Wissenschaftler auf Computer, um Materialien und deren Eigenschaften zu konzipieren, bevor sie sich überhaupt in die Nähe eines Labors begeben. Einige der neuesten Materialien, die die Fantasie der Forscher beflügeln, existieren bislang nur in der Theorie. Das Ziel ist es nun, sie in die Realität umzusetzen, denn jede einzelne Vision hat das Potenzial, etwas zu verändern.
