Über die Initiative About the initiative

Die Arbeit des Goethe-Instituts in 93 Ländern hat vor allem Eines offenbart: Kultur vereint und stärkt in Zeiten des Umbruchs und eröffnet Ansätze für Lösungen. Kultur sorgt für die kreative Entfaltung einer Gesellschaft und gibt ihr Selbstvertrauen.

The engagement of the Goethe-Institut in 93 countries has certainly revealed one thing: Culture unites and strengthens in times of turmoil and initiates approaches to reach solutions.

Culture contributes to the creative evolvement of a society and instills it with confidence.

Die tägliche Zusammenarbeit mit Partnern vor Ort zeigt, wie entscheidend ein reges Kulturleben und eine selbstbewusste Kunstund Wissenschaftsszene die Entwicklung eines Landes beeinflussen. Kulturakteure und Wissenschaftler sind Seismographen und zugleich Mitgestalter gesellschaftlicher Veränderungen. Eine lebendige Kulturszene und ein offener kultureller Austausch sind eine verlässliche Basis für den Umgang mit unterschiedlichen Werten, mit Konflikten und gesellschaftlichen Widersprüchen.

The day-to-day collaboration with local partners has shown how decisively the development of a country is influenced by a lively cultural life and a confident arts and science scene. Players in the field of culture and science are seismographs. At the same time they are agents of social change. A vibrant cultural scene and open cultural exchange are a reliable basis in dealing with various value systems, conflicts and social contradictions.

Deshalb unterstützt das Goethe-Institut seit Ende 2008 mit der Initiative „Kultur und Entwicklung“, Akteure in Kultur und Medien in Ländern der Entwicklungszusammenarbeit.

Through its initiative “Culture and Development” the GoetheInstitut has been supporting players in the field of culture and media since the end of 2008 in countries with which it collaborates in the field of development assistance.

Die aufstrebende Weltregion Südostasien mit ihren knapp 600 Millionen Menschen ist seit Beginn der Initiative eine der Schwerpunktregionen. Sie verfolgt im Wesentlichen drei Ziele:

Südostasien ist eine besonders heterogene Region. Dies zeigt sich im Grad der Entwicklung, in der Verteilung von Reichtum und Wohlstand, in den verschiedenen politischen Systemen, in den praktizierten Religionen und in der ethnisch-kulturellen Zusammensetzung. Die Initiative „Kultur und Entwicklung“ greift diese Vielfalt in ihrer Arbeit auf:

This is seen in the varying degrees of development, unequal distribution of wealth and affluence, different political systems, multiplicity of religions and the ethno-cultural composition in the region. Die Angebote und Förderprogramme sind auf die Bedürfnisse der Länder zugeschnitten. Der Entwicklungsbedarf und die Ziele der Projekte werden zusammen mit lokalen Partnern definiert. Der Fokus liegt auf der unmittelbaren Qualifizierung von künstlerischem und medialem Schaffen. Die Lernprozesse sind grundsätzlich anwendungs- und praxisbezogen.

The proposals and funding programmes are custom-designed according to the needs of the countries. The development needs and project targets are defined along with local partners. The focus is on raising the standard of creation in the fields of art and media. The learning processes are application- and practice oriented.

Eine Übergabe an lokale Partnerinstitutionen wird von Anfang an angestrebt. Nur so können die gewonnen Qualifikationen und Kompetenzen den Ländern langfristig zu Gute kommen.

A handing-over to local partner institutions is aimed at from the very beginning. Only in this way can the countries derive long-term benefits from the qualifications and expertise acquired. The programmes are constantly improved through regular evaluation.

Auf der Suche nach ihrem Platz in der modernen, globalisierten Welt sehen sich die südostasiatischen Länder mit großen sozialen, politischen und kulturellen Umbrüchen konfrontiert. Die digitale Revolution und der Zugang zu erschwinglicher Technik versetzen mehr junge Künstler in die Lage, diese Veränderungen mit den Mitteln des Films zu reflektieren und zu dokumentieren.

In search of their place in the modern, globalized world, Southeast Asian countries find themselves confronted with great social, political and cultural upheavals. The digital revolution and access to affordable technology has enabled more and more young artists to reflect on and document these changes through the medium of film.

Mangelnde Ausbildungs- und Förderungsangebote und die Orientierung an schnellen Fernsehformaten hindern die Nachwuchstalente jedoch daran, handwerklich anspruchsvolle Filme auf den Markt zu bringen und ein internationales Publikum zu erreichen.

Hier setzen die Angebote des Goethe-Instituts an.

However, lack of training and funding offers and the orientation towards quick TV formats prevent the up-and-coming talents from launching technically sophisticated films on the market and reaching an international audience. This is where the programmes of the Goethe-Institut come into the picture.

Ariani Djalal / Participant in a Documentary Film Workshop Workshops / Summerschools: Namhafte Regisseure aus Deutschland vermitteln südostasiatischen Filmemachern das Handwerk des Dokumentarfilms. Dabei können die Teilnehmer ihre Technik im Rahmen der Workshops verfeinern und Dokumentarfilm als Ausdrucksmittel und Sprachrohr erkunden. In Einzelfällen vermittelt das Goethe-Institut vielversprechende Filme aus der Region an internationale Filmfestivals.

Durch die gezielte Zusammenarbeit mit renommierten Fernsehsendern und durch regionale Treffen von wichtigen Akteuren soll langfristig ein Markt erschlossen werden, der den jungen Filmemachern eine berufliche Perspektive bietet.

Ab 2012 wird dieses Dokumentarfilm-Netzwerk mit der EU-Initiative „In Menschen Investieren“ ausgebaut und um ein jährlich stattfindendes Festival für Dokumentarfilm aus Südostasien ergänzt.

Workshops / Summer Schools: Renowned directors from Germany convey the art of documentary filmmaking to Southeast Asian filmmakers. The participants can hone their techniques in the workshops and explore the documentary film format as a medium of expression and of giving a voice. In individual cases the Goethe-Institut also recommends promising films from the region to international film festivals.

In the long run, collaborations with renowned television networks and regional meetings of important players aim to create a market, which will improve the professional prospects of young filmmakers.

Starting in 2012 this documentary film network will be expanded in tandem with the EU initiative “Investing in People”. It will be complemented with an annual festival for documentary films from Southeast Asia. > www.docnetsoutheastasia.net

Trotz des wirtschaftlichen Aufschwungs Südostasiens bleibt vielen Menschen in der Region der Zugang zu Bildung und Wissen verwehrt. Bildung, Wissenschaft und Forschung sind jedoch für die Entwicklung und die internationale Wettbewerbsfähigkeit der Länder entscheidend.

Despite the economic boom in Southeast Asia many people in the region still do not have access to education and knowledge. However, education, science and research are crucial for the development and international competitiveness of the countries.

Die Projekte des Goethe-Instituts im Bereich „Zugang zum Wissen“ richten sich gezielt an Kinder und Jugendliche und bieten interessante Impulse für eine kreative Bildungspolitik. Die Zusammenarbeit mit Ministerien, Fernsehsendern und weiteren lokalen Partnern ist dabei entscheidend. Nur so hat eine breitere Öffentlichkeit auch längerfristig Zugang zu qualitativ hochwertigen Angeboten.

The projects of Goethe-Institut in the field of “Access to Knowledge” (A2K) are specifically geared towards children and young people and offer interesting impulses for a creative education policy. The cooperation with ministries, television networks and other local partners is vital. Only this approach can ensure that the public at large also has a longer-term access to high quality offers.

Wissenschaftsfilmfestival: Das regional angelegte Wissenschaftsfilmfestival für Kinder und Jugendliche präsentiert hochwertige Fernsehformate aus der ganzen Welt. Alle Filme werden in die jeweiligen Landessprachen übersetzt und synchronisiert und durch ein vielseitiges Begleitprogramm aus Experimenten, Spielen und Wettbewerben ergänzt.

Ein Netzwerk an renommierten Partnern in allen beteiligten Ländern – lokale Ministerien, Universitäten, Schulen und NGOs – trägt das Festival und sorgt dafür, dass das Angebot auch in entlegenen Gegenden stattfinden kann.

Inzwischen erreicht das Wissenschaftsfilmfestival jährlich über 230.000 Kinder und Jugendliche in Indonesien, Kambodscha, Malaysia, den Philippinen, Thailand und Vietnam. Damit ist es weltweit das größte Festival seiner Art. In den kommenden Jahren soll das Angebot auf alle ASEAN-Länder ausgeweitet werden.

Science Film Festival: The regionally organized Science Film Festival for children and young adults presents high-quality TV formats from all over the world. All films are translated into the respective local language, dubbed and complemented with an eclectic programme consisting of experiments, games and competitions.

A network of renowned partners in all the participating countries – local ministries, universities, schools and NGOs – supports the festival and ensures that it also reaches remote regions.

By now the Science Film Festival reaches more than 230.000 children and young people every year in Indonesia, Cambodia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. I Got It!: Neun Fernsehsender – Eine Vision: Unter diesem Motto hat das Goethe-Institut zusammen mit staatlichen Fernsehsendern aus Brunei, Indonesien, Kambodscha, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, den Philippinen, Thailand und Vietnam „I Got It!“ entwickelt.

Als erstes südostasiatisches Wissensmagazin für Kinder erklärt es die Welt spielerisch. „Woher kommt eigentlich unser Trinkwasser?“, „Was ist ein Vulkan?“, „Wie können Abfälle wiederverwertet werden?“: Diese und andere Fragen beantwortet „I Got It!“ kindgerecht und orientiert sich dabei an den kulturellen Besonderheiten der einzelnen Länder.

Zwei Redakteurinnen aus dem deutschen Kinderfernsehen begleiten die lokalen Teams von der Themenfindung über das Skript, den Dreh bis hin zur Postproduktion. Die ersten beiden Staffeln mit je 25 Folgen wurden 2010 und 2011 in allen beteiligten Ländern ausgestrahlt. Weitere Serien sind in Produktion.

I Got It!: Nine television broadcasters – One vision: This is the motto under which the Goethe-Institut developed “I Got It!” together with national television networks from Brunei, Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. It is the first Southeast Asian knowledge magazine for children and it explains the world playfully.

“Where does our drinking water come from?”, “What is a volcano?”, “How can waste be recycled?”: “I Got It!” answers these and other similar questions in a child-friendly way and orients itself according to the cultural particularities of the individual countries.

Two editors from German children’s television accompany the local teams through all the stages from finding a topic, scripting and shooting to post-production. The first two series with 25 episodes each were aired in all participating countries in 2010 and 2011. Further series are currently under production.

Mit einem vielseitigen Ausbildungsprogramm im Musikbereich reagiert das Goethe-Institut auf die reiche Musikkultur der südostasiatischen Länder. Regionale Wettbewerbe und Workshops setzen es sich zum Ziel, landesspezifische Musiktraditionen zu pflegen und zu erhalten. Um auch der steigenden Nachfrage nach westlicher Musik und klassischer Instrumentenlehre gerecht zu werden, gestalten deutsche Musiker Workshops für lokale Ensembles, Bands, Dirigenten und Komponisten.

Ganz im Sinne des angestrebten Austauschs in der Region wurde 2012 das erste südostasiatische Jugend-Kammerorchester ins Leben gerufen.

With an eclectic training programme in the field of music, the Goethe-Institut responds to the rich musical culture of Southeast Asian countries. Regional contests and workshops foster and uphold country-specific music traditions. In order to meet also the increasing demand for western music and classical instrumental teaching, German musicians organize workshops for local ensembles, bands, conductors and composers.

In 2012 the first Southeast Asian Youth Chamber Orchestra was founded in accordance with the goal of promoting exchange in the region.

Die besten Stücke werden prämiert. In regionalen Workshops erhalten die jungen Talente dann die Gelegenheit, sich auszutauschen. Sie werden dabei von internationalen Experten beraten und betreut. Zur Uraufführung der neuen Werke werden eigene Konzerte veranstaltet bei denen die Stücke einer breiten Öffentlichkeit vorgestellt werden.

Solche Programme bewahren die künstlerische Vielfalt und verknüpfen zeitgenössisches Musikschaffen mit den lokalen Traditionen der Länder. Auch hier gilt der Grundsatz: Die Ausbildung der jungen Komponisten findet im engen regionalen Austausch statt.

Zugleich wird ihnen damit der Anschluss an das internationale Musikgeschehen ermöglicht.

Young Composers SouthEast Asia: Every two years young composers from the region are called upon to submit their new musical creations. The best pieces are premiered. The selected young talents then get an opportunity to swap ideas in regional workshops where they are guided and mentored by international masters. Concerts are organized for the premiere of their new works thus presenting them to the public at large.

Such programmes preserve the rich artistic diversity and link contemporary musical creation with the local traditions of the countries. The principle is the same: Young composers get trained in the regional exchange programs. At the same time such programmes also enable them to connect with the international music scene.

Bläserausbildung: In Zusammenarbeit mit der indonesischen Musikschule Amadeus und der Salamander Big Band bietet das Goethe-Institut ein systematisches Ausbildungsprogramm für Bläser in Java an.

Junge professionelle Musiker aus Deutschland werden nach Indonesien eingeladen, um dort für mehrere Monate Musikstudenten, zukünftige Lehrkräfte und Bandmitglieder zu unterrichten. Das Programm überzeugt nicht zuletzt durch die spürbaren Fortschritte der ambitionierten, jungen Musiker innerhalb erstaunlich kurzer Zeit.

Wind Instruments: The Goethe-Institut, in collaboration with the Indonesian music school Amadeus and the Salamander Big Band, has set up a systematic training programme for wind instrument players in Java.

Young professional musicians from Germany are invited to Indonesia to instruct music students, future teachers and band members over several months. The young and ambitious musicians have made noticeable progress within a surprisingly short time.

Um die vielfältigen Tanztraditionen in den Ländern Südostasiens zueinander in Bezug zu bringen und diese einem internationalen Publikum verfügbar zu machen, hat das Goethe-Institut das Projekt „tanzconnexions“ ins Leben gerufen.

The Goethe-Institut has initiated the project “tanzconnexions” to create a network of the diverse dance traditions in the countries of Southeast Asia and to make the knowledge accessible to an international audience.

Das Online-Portal berichtet über neue Strömungen und Festivals und stellt junge Choreographen mit ihren Arbeiten vor. Erfolgreiche Koproduktionen zwischen lokalen und deutschen Choreographen und Tänzern tragen den Vernetzungsgedanken von der digitalen in die analoge Welt.

The online portal informs about new trends and festivals and presents young choreographers and their works. Successful coproductions between local and German choreographers and dancers carry the concept of networking from the digital to the analogous world.

Auch „Kultur und Entwicklung“ setzt in Südostasien einen Schwerpunkt im Bereich Tanz: Das Goethe-Institut bietet gezielte Ausbildungsangebote für Choreographen, Tanzkritiker, Festivalleiter, Bühnenmanager und Bühnentechniker an.

Regionale Choreographen-Workshops: In Gesprächen, Technikklassen und gemeinsamen Aufführungen gibt das Goethe-Institut Choreographen aus Südostasien den Raum, sich über die Tanztraditionen ihrer Länder, über Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede und über ihre Auseinandersetzung mit der Moderne auszutauschen.

Dieser innerregionale Diskurs ist für das Herausbilden eines eigenen zeitgenössischen Stils entscheidend.

Regional Choreography Workshops: The Goethe-Institut organizes talks, lessons in techniques and joint performances to provide choreographers from Southeast Asia the space to swap ideas about the dance traditions in their countries, the similarities and differences and their engagement with modernity. This inner-regional discourse is crucial for the evolution of a distinctive contemporary style.
