Aussie billionaire invests in world’s largest solar farm CANBERRA, SEP 26: Australian technology billionaire Mike Cannon-Brookes has announced that he would be investing to create the world’s largest solar farm.

Cannon-Brookes, the co-founder of software company Atlassian, recently told the Australian Financial Review (AFR) that he would “shortly” declare how much he would pour into Singaporean company Sun Cable’s project which is worth about A$20 billion ($13 billion).

If it goes ahead, the power generated by the 15,000-hectare solar farm in the Northern Territory (NT) would be exported to Singapore via a 3,800 km high voltage direct current (HVDC) cable, Xinhua news agency reported.

“I’m backing it, we’re going to make it work, I’m going to build a wire.

“This will be absolutely great, with world-leading engineering required. But we can do it,” CannonBrookes said.

The NT’s Chief Minister Michael Gunner said that the state is ideally suited to lead Australia in the renewable energy industry.

“Investing in renewables means more local jobs, and more permanent jobs for Territorians,” he told the Australian media.

Cheaper medicine for over 500,000 patients from Oct 1

CANBERRA, SEP 30: Cheaper medicine is on the way for more than 500,000 patients from October 1, with price reductions for common scripts and new medicines added to the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS), in some cases saving over $100,000 per patient.

Medicines to treat lung cancer, lymphoblastic and acute leukaemia, and nausea associated with chemotherapy will now be available to patients on the PBS from tomorrow for just $40.30 per script, or $6.50 with a concession card.

Every medicine was recommended to the PBS by the independent expert Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee. By law the Federal Government cannot list a new medicine without a positive recommendation from the PBAC. The Government’s commitment to ensuring that Australians can access affordable medicines, when they need them, is rock solid. This includes continuing to cut the cost of medicines for patients through the PBS safety net.

From 1 January 2020 the threshold to receive free or further discounted medicines through the PBS will be lowered by 12 scripts for pensioners and concession card holders and the equivalent of 2 scripts for non-concession card holders.

Since 2013, the Morrison Government has listed over 2,100 new or amended items on the PBS. This represents an average of around 31 listings per month – or one each day – at an overall cost of around $10.6 billion.

elbourne, Sep 30: Like every year, Melbourne is gearing up for the biggest Diwali festival at Federation Square with an interesting line up of events culmination with fireworks on October 19. But more importantly, Celebrate India, the organisation at the helm of this iconic festival is hoping the festival of lights will continue up to Christmas in celebration of multiculturalism and acknowledgement of ever religion and festivals that shape Australia’s social fabric.

Leading up to Diwali, the organisation has already completed two of the three promotional events on Facebook – the Unique Talent Quest and Dance for Diwali contests with focus on the younger generation to carry on the culture.

“We were overwhelmed by the interests and community participation and we also received 40 videos for the dance competition,” said Arun Sharma,

Other restaurants will also join these drive and offer sweets to customers as a gesture of good will, said Sharma.

The festival which begins on October 14 will culminate on October 19 at Federation Square with many surprises in store.

One of the highlights will be a performance by the Abhyas, a renowned Kathak dance group from India. The timeless magic of Shankar-Jaikishan’s music will also be another festival drawcard.

With its charity partner Beyond Blue this year, Celebrate India which is entering its 14th year, hopes to evoke a breathtaking blue moment and movement on the big day of October 19.

MELBOURNE, SEP 30: Victoria’s relationship with India continues to deepen, with India’s largest commercial bank becoming the first Indian bank to establish an office in Victoria.

Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasurer Steve Dimopoulos today joined Indian government representatives to mark the official opening of State Bank of India’s (SBI) first Victorian office at 420 Collins St, Melbourne, a press release said.

Headquartered in Mumbai, SBI is India’s largest commercial bank, with more than 450 million customers and almost a quarter of the market share for deposits and advances.

The Melbourne office will support the important trade and investment relationship between Victoria and India, with two-way merchandise trade worth $1.76 billion in 2018 alone.

Attracting an Indian bank to Victoria also fulfils one of the key outcomes of the Andrews Labor Government’s 10-year India Strategy – Our Shared Future.

The strategy was launched last year to drive engagement across various priority sectors,

Language programs breaking barriers for migrant families

Youth Justice System to become more modernised and secure

MELBOURNE, SEP 27: The Andrews Labor Government is modernising Victoria’s youth justice system through a modified design of Cherry Creek and continued operation of the Parkville and Malmsbury Youth Justice Centres.

MELBOURNE, SEP 26: A pilot program to help migrant families move to regional Victoria and build their language skills is making its mark on the community, thanks to support from the Andrews Labor Government.

Minister for Regional Development Jaclyn Symes visited Hamilton today to meet some of the families involved in the Great South Coast Economic Migration pilot program – which supports families currently living in metropolitan Melbourne to live and work regionally, as they did in their African countries of origin.

The program was supported by $162,000 from the Labor Government’s Regional Skills Fund and the Stronger Regional Communities Program, and includes a Language Café for adults, and a Tutoring Café for youth, to learn and improve their English so they can better integrate into the community.

Each migrant family in the program is also matched with a local family to build connections with the community and local services as well as extra English language assistance.

Under this model, the new facility at Cherry Creek will house males aged 1518. It will operate alongside existing youth justice centres at Parkville which will house female youth offenders and males aged below 15, and Malmsbury which will continue to house males between the ages of 15 and 21.

The design of the Cherry Creek facility has been revised to deliver a more specialised facility that focuses on staff safety and reducing re-offending among Victoria’s most complex and challenging young males aged 15-18 years.

The facility will also include an intensive intervention unit, a specialised health care unit, intensive alcohol and drug treatment and dedicated mental health beds.

forefront of the revised design. There will be more secure accommodation units, advanced technology to monitor movement, additional CCTV, improved security counter designs at reception, gatehouse and admissions areas and new staff exit points.

The design changes at Cherry Creek were informed by international best practice, feedback from independent experts including the Youth Justice Custodial Facilities Working Group, and recommendations from the Armytage/ Ogloff and Neil Comrie AO reviews.

The Cherry Creek facility is due to be completed in 2021 and will include 140 beds. The facility will be master planned for up to 244 beds. The construction of the facility will create more than 400 ongoing jobs for the local community.

The Community Advisory Group, established in June 2017, has provided input into the planning and construction of the Cherry Creek youth justice facility, by identifying and addressing local issues and informing the wider community about the project.

The Labor Government has invested over $1.2 billion in youth justice, including for infrastructure upgrades and the construction of new units at Parkville and Malmsbury.

The innovative project is the result of a two-year research partnership between the Labor Government, VicHealth, the Behavioural Insights Team, University of Melbourne and Victoria University.

The project focused on identifying ways to encourage bystanders who witness sexism and sexual harassment to step in and take action.

Organisations are increasingly interested in encouraging bystander interventions, but there are currently few evidence-based resources available to support them.

Research before interventions found 90 per cent of respondents thought it was right to take action after witnessing sexism or sexual harassment – but only 32-39 per cent actually took action.

However, bystander intervention increased by 10 per cent in the group that received intervention education.

These methods are outlined in the new toolkit now available for universities and Victorian organisations – Take action: Empowering bystanders to act on sexist and sexually harassing behaviours.

Minister for Women Gabrielle Williams said, “Too many women experience sexual harassment – whether it’s at university, on a train or at work. It’s not okay, and this toolkit will help people step in and stop it.”

SINGAPORE, SEP 27: A Singapore-based Indian man who molested an air stewardess on a flight from India to Singapore was sentenced to four months jail.

Vijayan Mathan Gopal, who is a Singapore permanent resident, was on the Scoot flight from Cochin, India, on November 2, 2017 when the incident took place. He has since lost his job, the Straits Times reported.

After a trial, District Judge Salina Ishak found Gopal guilty of three molestation charges in August. He was convicted of three counts of outraging the modesty of the 22-year-old air stewardess by holding her right arm and touching her face, cupping her face with his hands, placing his hand on her thigh and touching her buttock.

While sentencing Gopal on Friday, the judge said that air travel is “a high-pressure environment”, with no ready means of escape for the molestation victim.

Dhaliwal, a father of three young children, began his career in law enforcement out of a desire to serve after then-Sheriff Adrian Garcia reached out to strengthen the department’s relationship with the Sikh community after deputies botched a domestic violence call at a Sikh family’s home.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Jane Lim had earlier said in her submissions that following take-off, Gopal had an argument with a crew member as he had refused to pay after ordering food and red wine.

NEW DELHI, SEP 25: There has been a tectonic shift in the past decade not just in the overall buying pattern but also in the age of property buyers, according to a new report which found that younger Indians with much lower savings kept away from bank loans seeing them as risky, and were also very cautious about them.

Facebook-owned WhatsApp particularly failed in blocking the propagation of misinformation campaigns through public groups, said the study conducted by researchers from Federal University of Minas Gerais in Brazil and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US. In the study, the researchers wanted to find out how effective WhatsApp’s efforts were in countering the spread of misinformation circulating on the platform.

The research pointed out that WhatsApp allows the connection among like-minded individuals through chat groups which have a limit of 256 users and can be private or public.

While in the case of private groups, new members must be added by a member who assumes the role of group administrator, for public groups, the access is by invitation links that could be shared to anyone or be available on the Web. As chat groups on WhatsApp are mostly private, harder to monitor than Facebook or Twitter discussions.

The researchers joined several WhatsApp public groups and analysed messages posted on these platforms.

They analysed the data around the election day, 60 days before and 15 after, in three countries -- India, Brazil and Indonesia.

Their analysis showed that while most of the images (80 per cent) last no more than two days, there are images in Brazil and in India that continued to appear even after two months of the first appearance.

“Our results suggest that the current efforts deployed by WhatsApp can offer significant delays on the information spread, but they are ineffective in blocking the propagation of misinformation campaigns through public groups when the content has a high viral nature,” the authors wrote in a paper published on pre-print repository arXiv. org.

And even if the 80 per cent images last no more than two days in WhatsApp that can be already enough to infect half of users in public groups, leaving 20 per cent of messages with a time span sufficient to be viral. Age Specific Marriage Rates Age-specific marriage rates provide a more detailed picture of the age at which people marry. These rates give an indication of the proportion of all males or females in a particular age group who marry in a given year. For both males and females in 2017, the highest age–specific marriage rates were for people between 25–29 years of age, with 35.5 marriages per 1,000 males and 41.8 marriages per 1,000 females.

While for older age groups (over 30 years of age) age-specific marriage rates increased from 1997 to 2007, all age groups have recorded decreased rates since then.

Victoria recorded the highest marriage rate in 2017, 4.8 marriages per 1,000 estimated resident population, whilst the Northern Territory had the lowest marriage rate, with 3.1 marriages per 1,000 estimated resident population Month of Marriage Of the 112,954 marriages registered in 2017, the most popular month of celebration for marriages was November with 12,576 (11.1%) marriages. The month of June was the least popular month for marriages with only 6,032 (5.3%) marriages taking place in that month.

Registries of Births, Deaths and Marriages provide couples an alternative to marriage where a relationship register of some kind is offered and maintained. Currently, Western Australia and Northern Territory are the only states and territories without a relationship register. Registers are available to adults who are in a relationship as a couple, regardless of sex.

A registered relationship is not only a legal proof of a relationship but it may also make it easier to prove the relationship when required for tax, superannuation and government payments as well as proving next-of-kin status to funeral directors and in medical emergencies.

Whilst the number of registered marriages has slowly declined over time, the number of relationships registered are growing on an annual basis. There were 14,626 relationships registered in 2017, over double the number registered in 2013 (7,281).

Melbourne, Sep 23: As the creator of Foodie Trails, Himanshi Munshaw Luhar prides herself as a cultural ambassador and has many things to share in that field.

“For the first time, we have a systematic answer to a key question in the field of selfesteem research: Whether and to what extent a person’s social relationships influence his or her self-esteem development, and vice versa, and at what ages,” said study author Michelle A. Harris from the University of Texas.

Having started her career in tourism at the age of 17, she moved to Melbourne in 2005 as a student and graduated in 2007 with a double master’s degree in business management and accounting.

She spent several years working within the industry in roles from customer service to travel advisor and business development manager for brands like Jetstar and Mauritius Tourism.

In 2009, Himanshi who was born and brought up in Mumbai, created Foodie Trails. The idea was to introduce and share cultures through food and stories with local Melbournians. The vision of Foodie Trails is “celebrating the cultures and differences that make up the world.”

Recently at the TEDx Monash University – Women in Leadership event, Himanshi had the opportunity to share her thoughts. She talked about two key qualities a leader should have: “Showing up for the good bad and the ugly. For the study, published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, researchers analysed 52 studies involving more than 47,000 participants (54 per cent female) looking at either the effect of self-esteem on social relationships overtime or the reverse effect.

The studies, all published between 1992 and 2016, included multiple countries like 30 samples from the US, four from Switzerland, three from Germany, two each from Australia, Belgium, Canada, Finland, Greece, Russia and Sweden.

The authors found that positive social relationships, social support and social acceptance help shape the development of self-esteem in people over time across ages four to 76.

They also found a significant effect in the reverse direction.

While earlier research had yielded inconsistent findings, the meta-analysis supports the classic and contemporary theories of the influence of self-esteem on social connections and the influence of social connections on self-esteem, said the researchers.

The findings were the same after accounting for gender and ethnicity.

as host of Indian Idol, Crazy With Dance, Kaun Banega Superstar, Bollywood Hungama, and Jhalak Dikhlaja in Sydney where he was the judge for the grand finale.

“I was the first Indian guy to come on Indian television in New Zealand, that was a huge thing. I was lucky to get this break. I am thankful I didn’t have to struggle,” says Deepak.

After 2010, the first film opportunity came from his Pakistani friend Fahad Hussein.

“He came out with a wonderful script on three students and how they are surviving on student visa, and their struggles at finding jobs so they can qualify for permanent residency (PR),” explains Deepak. The film titled Mr Singh Wants PR was Hussein’s and assistant director Jonathan Paul Paynter’s first 90-minute feature film, complete with the customary Bollywood dance dream sequence but made on a shoe-string budget.

“It was a wonderful experience and the film is close to my heart,” says Deepak, who went on to work in many other movies. He played the lead in Dark Side of Revenge (2011), Highway to Suva (2012), Urban Turban (2014 ), supporting in Stars in her Eyes (2012), Not For Children, Last Star, Waiting For you (2011), Twisted Families and Foreign Flame (2018)

wealthy and cruel businessman lords over the dockyards in Mumbai while making slaves out of all his workers. Three brothers with a troubled past decides to fight against his injustice. That in a nutshell is the story of 1991 Bollywood blockbuster Hum starring some of the industry greats such as Amitabh Bachchan, Rajinikanth and Govinda. For Rishi Deepak, an 11-year old then, it was a movie that captivated him to the extent that he could not complete his food - his spoon constantly severing from his mouth.

At that point, his father’s words, ‘can you just eat properly?’ cut through his reverie.

Watching Hum, Deepak knew right away he wanted to be an actor. In later conversations with his father, Deepak remembers being asked what he wanted to do in life and his answer remained the same: to become an actor. “Koi dhang ka kaam karle (get a decent job)” was the terse reply he was often met with.

Like every Indian father and growing up in India, Deepak’s father had bigger ambitions for his son. And with every next-door family producing a doctor or an engineer offspring, it kept Deepak in the competitive pool.

“So my dad had all these conditions.

If you want to become an actor, first do your engineering and after that do whatever you want, he told me,” says Deepak. True enough, he took up

In Ek Ka Do Aur Dhoka Ek (2016), a thriller, directed by Yogesh Pratap, Deepak recalls a wonderful experience of sharing space with well-known New Zealand actor Ben Mitchell and Aryan Vaid, former Grasim Mr India. mechanical engineering at the Career Institute of Technology and Management (CITM) in Faridabad and whilst studying managed to get roles of an extra in television shows. Sometimes it meant standing behind the main actors but he did manage to work in three TV series with very small roles.

Between 2010-2016, Deepak did 13 films. 2016 was also the year he moved to Australia where he did his 14th film Foreign Flame. “The journey has been brilliant till now,” he says.

Once Deepak completed his engineering degree, his father wanted him to look after their factory, DW Technologies, which dealt with mechanical engineering products. “I felt my dream going down the drain,” he recalls.

However, by some change of luck he moved to New Zealand for further studies and that is when Deepak says he ‘got lucky’.

Literally. New Zealand in the early 2000s was buzzing with opportunities for people like Deepak.

He got straight into the television industry through Dreamz Productions, New Zealand’s own Bollywood production house. From 2005 to 2010, Deepak worked in 1,250 episodes of different shows including

Incidentally, apart from the persuasion of his family (his three brothers and parents are settled in Australia), Deepak says it was Foreign Flame director Jagga Peddi who convinced him with the script of the film that made his decision to move here easy.

Most of Deepak’s films have been released in New Zealand, Fiji, Australia and the United States. “But of course, distribution is something our producers and directors look into in details. Feeling Lucky was released in India as well and was received well,” he says.

Foreign Flame was released in Village Cinemas in Melbourne, and showcased in Sydney, Adelaide, New Zealand and Fiji. The film also won the Best actor and Best director awards at the Festival of Globe (FOG) in San Francisco. Now it has gone to distributors and will be released on Netflix and other digital platforms as well, says Deepak.

For Deepak, a career highlight was working on Fijian film Highway to Suva, which is a story about love, family and friends and produced by Unifocus Pictures. “I had to learn Fijian Hindi. My director didn’t trust me in the start as I had to learn the language, he was like ‘you are too fair for the role’ but after the audition he said it is definitely you,” laughs Deepak, adding, “The film was received very well in Fiji and people in Fiji knew me and loved me. It’s a wonderful feeling to be loved in another country that much.”

Since having moved down under, Deepak says the opportunities have not stopped coming although he rues the fact that there are not full-time producers, directors or actors. But as a qualified mechanical engineer, he has his parallel career going and takes time off when projects come his way.

At the moment, he is brimming with excitement for what he calls the deal of his lifetime -a Hollywood film for which he is on preparation mode growing his hair and so on. For reasons of privacy, he cannot reveal much except that he plays a decent character in the movie. “The film has A listers of Hollywood and I am keeping my fingers crossed. This is not a small film, it is a huge action thriller, it is Hollywood action. So let’s see where this takes us.”

Deepak does harbour Bollywood dreams but to go and stay in India is going to be a bit of a challenge, he believes.

“I am settled here. If, God willing, the Hollywood film opens my doors to all the other opportunities then I am more keen towards Hollywood than Bollywood.”

Having always been fascinated with films since the age of 11 and how one character can live so many lives, Deepak is sure of not giving up on this passion he has nurtured. “I have been doing this for 15 years now and I believe everything happens for a good reason. Bigger things are bound to happen if you are a firm believer!”

My confidence has helped me the most, especially throughout the recruiting process. I was lucky as I was aware of what I wanted to do while I was very young. Staying focused on that goal has helped me become a young cadet.

ne of the things that Simranpreet Kaur Wadhawan talks about growing up in Perth is her love for sports. In a way it helped her build confidence, says Wadhawan, who is perhaps the youngest Sikh girl to join the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF).

This January, Wadhawan was officially welcomed into the RAAF at a ceremony in Perth. She received an initial threeweek training and now she is undertaking her studies at the Australian Defence Force Academy in Canberra for three years, after the completion of which she hopes to undertake a leadership role within the RAAF. Wadhawan says she wants to be a positive influence on young generations and believes developing her Sikh values over time, especially the service to country, has been the most important and stood her good stead. In an exclusive interview with G’day India, Wadhawan talks about her life and aspirations.

First of all, tell us a bit about your background and growing up in Perth.

I moved to Australia when I was eight years old and have been living in Perth since then. Growing up, I loved to play sports, particularly netball and tennis. As well as competing with other netball clubs, I joined the Perth Sikh Swans Netball Team where we got the opportunity to compete across states during the Australian Sikh Games. I also loved volunteering growing up and I have been part of debating teams, advisory groups, and youth council groups. These groups helped me build confidence in myself and improved my organisational skills.

What inspired you to join the Royal Australian Air Force?

I wanted to join the Royal Australian Air Force as I did not want a mainstream career. My strengths lay in my selfconfidence and communication skills.

As I was heavily involved in community work for many years, including other leadership activities, I wanted to do something that would reinforce that, and also make everyone proud of me.

I wanted to be a positive influence on young generations. I have wanted to join since I was 12, so six years now.

What kind of preparation and training did you undergo for this?

I concentrated on my physical training the most prior to joining. This included long runs during the morning, sit ups and push ups mainly. I concentrated on weight training and cardio during my gym sessions. Personally, my preparation entailed building my confidence through the groups I participated in. I took part in as many public speeches as I could so that I could to get comfortable talking in public.

What is the biggest professional challenge now?

The biggest professional challenge for me now is ensuring that I am continually learning about my responsibilities and what hardships I can face once my training has concluded. I want to ensure that I can develop my skills to deal with

a difficult work situation to the best of my abilities.

What is the favourite part of your job?

I haven’t started my job yet, but I am definitely looking forward to it. During my training, I enjoy the daily opportunity to learn and being around highly ranked and professional leaders who are always there to guide, whenever the need may be. Their past experiences have also helped me understand the future prospects I can look forward to. I enjoy the discipline and the professional behavior in which we all conduct ourselves as trainee officers.

our young readers?

The Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) has developed my character through various military and leadership experiences. Learning that everyone has their own individual style of leadership, which are shaped by your world view. Being able to see the latest technological equipment, learning how to manage tasks and improving my communication skills have shaped some of my early experiences.

What advice would you give to another youngster who may be considering joining the RAAF? It is an absolutely great opportunity for those looking for a secured future.

You get paid to study and once trained there are opportunities to deploy around the world. I would advise people joining to make sure that they have fully

researched their jobs and made sure they are applying for the role they are most interested in.

What would you want our readers to know about the RAAF in general?

Many opportunities for various areas are available in the RAAF, including medical, logistics, and administration.

Men and women from all different backgrounds work together, therefore the workplace is very diverse. Everyone is very supportive of each other, which is the best part of working with the Defence Force.

Where does your Sikh values and Indian background fit into the equation?

Developing the Sikh values over time, especially the service to country has been the most important for me until now.

Sikhs have had a rich military tradition, and have always been committed to serve the country in order to protect the oppressed at any time needed. This value was particularly imbedded in me, every time I visited the Gurudwara.

The community service while preparing for the langar (communal meal), the selfless service while volunteering and sharing a meal together with everyone have nourished my character. This sense of community was also influenced by the Indian background I have had growing up as there has always been a sense of belonging, no matter who you communicate with.

I believe it is very important for the Sikh and Indian community to get more representations in roles such as this around Australia. It helps others become more aware about your religion and culture and help make the environment more multicultural and diversified.

Being in such roles helps create global awareness, which makes people more informed and helps them unite by having an understanding of the values and beliefs. It plays a major role in influencing other young generations of our community to aim high and achieve their dreams.

What are the essential ingredients of leadership and success?

For me, success is about having the patience and the ability to learn from others. The main ingredients for leadership are integrity, communication with your peers and knowledge about your job.

Melbourne-based lawyer Gurpal Singh speaks up after May fiasco

S

itting at his Blackburn office, Gurpal Singh an experienced barrister and solicitor in Melbourne, is ruing about his aspirations towards a political career that has, unfortunately, been nipped in the bud. Singh, a Liberal Party candidate for Scullin for the May 2019 federal elections, says he was in the middle of a pre-polling booth when he got a call from the party’s director asking him to attend office immediately. It would lead to his resignation to his candidature for Scullin in North Melbourne.

Singh’s termination made headlines and for the Indian community with very few political representations, it was indeed a disheartening turn of events.

In his own words, Singh, whose many credentials include working with top American law firm Ropers, Majeski, Kohn & Bentley (RMKB) based in San Jose with specialisations in International commercial and IT laws, shares his personal views on what happened. ‘’While I was campaigning and the party was supporting me, the Sydney Morning Herald came with a story that Gurpal Singh, a Liberal candidate, connects same sex marriage with paedophilia. That is one aspect which created such a nuisance - you are talking about my looks, my turban, my faith, immigrant background and so on.

‘’The Prime Minister made a statement that I did not do anything wrong and that I was simply expressing my views at the time when there was a national voting on the issue of same sex marriage.

The whole country, even a sitting Prime Minister at the time and a former Prime Minister were of the same views I had – that same sex marriage is a big no-no.

And all people of faith and people of conservative background who consider family as a union of a man and a woman were opposed to that idea. Even MPs from different parties were not in favour of voting in support of gay marriage. So Parliamentarians at the time in all their wisdom could not decide whether to make that the law or not. They threw the ball in the court of the public, and the national plebiscite on same-sex marriage cost more than 100 million dollars. Now, that was one part. The Prime Minister, and others such as Josh Frydenberg the Treasurer, and Simon Birmingham, who was the main spokesperson of the federal election said, ‘Gurpal Singh is alright.

He expressed his opinion; it is a thing of the past’. ‘’However, I must express why my name was joined in this conversation by a section of the media.

In 2017, I was often called for my opinion on immigration issues or on topics of interest to the Punjabi community at the SBS Radio’s

Punjabi station. When the issue of gay marriage came up, I was interviewed and I said as a person of faith and being a devout Sikh I believed in the theory given

by Guru Nanak that marriage has to be between a man and a woman. ‘’In the course of the interview, I explained the basis on which I formed my opinion and I said we have to see the impact of this whole new scenario on the children in the future, say, 15 or 20 years later. And those children are not biological children of husband and wife as we see in a traditional marriage, they are surrogate or adopted children, so we have to see the issue of paedophilia and what happens to the children. As a lawyer, I have seen cases where after a couple’s separation the wife alleges that the husband has inappropriately touched their daughter. ‘’That interview was in Punjabi, and later during the election campaign the producer called me to say that Opposition party asked about me. When the Prime Minister made a statement in my favour, they didn’t like it. The Labor Party and other leftist media came up with another story which was also picked up from SBS Punjabi in which I, in the capacity of a lawyer, had commented. The story titled ‘’I married my rapist’’ was posted on the Facebook page of SBS Punjabi.

The story goes like this: An 18-year old girl comes from Punjab, she lives with a boy (20 or 21 years of age) for two years in the same house; after two years she marries the boy and they live as a couple for further 10 years and have two children. After 10 years of marriage, they separate citing domestic violence issues and the woman then alleges that she married her rapist. This was a one-sided story with no production of document to say whether the rape was reported to the police. I have taken up cases where rape occurred ten years prior in time of making the complaint. Despite such a delay of years, police took cognisance and charges were laid against the accused.

Now in this case, I read the story and found it truly preposterous. I am a lawyer, I handle many such cases and it is a very sensitive issue. ‘’As a consequence, I was called to the party head-quarters and I was questioned as to what I did. I said I know this guy. Now you should show me whether any complaint was made to the police, whether the husband was investigated or chargesheeted and whether there was any criminal trial against him. There was none. So, this story remained published for more than a year. And my comment remained published on the SBS Facebook page for that period of time. SBS Punjabi didn’t come back with any rebuttal and they didn’t produce the other version of the story. It was a one-sided story, the rape had not been demonstrated. However, the Liberal Party said ‘we have only six days to go before the elections’ and there was no time left to counter this point. I had to resign from my candidacy. ‘’So, this is the background.

me, they wanted a change and I would, in all probability, have won the seat or given a tough fight. ‘’I have been practising law for 26 years and I have kept my record clean. They were digging for financial irregularities or any acts of misdemeanour, but they couldn’t find anything. What they found were these two statements (on gay marriage and comment on alleged rape story) against me and they were trying to demean me on those bases. ‘’They were just opinions. I am a lawyer and I am entitled to make opinions on the basis of facts of a particular case. But you are taking those opinions out of context and divesting me off my political career, which has not even started? I spent everything I had – my time, my energy, resources and friendships. I feel I have been made a victim of false propaganda and unethical journalism, which has happened in Australia during the general elections. ‘’I made a request to SBS that you kindly provide me the documents showing the rape, they said ‘no we will not because there is a privilege’. On one hand, you claim privilege and on the other, you rely on your hidden and onesided story (sic) to demolish my whole life, reputation, political career and growth of multi-culturalism in Australia. And you don’t even tell the public what actually happened? On top of that, they go back to the girl again who says the world is now a better place after my resignation.

Nobody knows about the rape and it was a very vindictive propaganda against me, a person who has lived honestly all his life and worked hard to reach here. I have not been given any opportunity to prove that the allegations of rape were not real. ‘’I feel very frustrated because I have lost friends too. People read the headlines and they believe I am some sort of rapist or a criminal or some culprit.

On my Facebook page, there were so many abusive comments. My photo was also projected on the LGBT dating site to show I am a bad man. There is nobody to support me, people are trying to say things left, right centre against me as if I am a criminal. Tell me, what is my fault? SHIMLA, SEP 26: With over 100 cyclists from 17 countries participating, the Hero MTB Himalaya, Asia’s oldest stage race, was flagged off by Governor Bandaru Dattatraya here on Thursday.

They gathered at Dak Bangla in Mashobra after riding 25 km in the prologue. The competitive six-stage 500-km race will begin on Friday. The participants will cover the distance in six days, with elevation going up to 12,000 metres, 2,000 metres a day.

They will traverse four districts.

Starting from Shimla, it will pass through remote parts of inner and outer Seraj in the Kullu and Mandi districts before culminating on October 3 at Bir in the Kangra Valley, which is world famous paragliding site.

New Springs, held at the Hawthorn Arts Centre on Friday 6th September was an all-inclusive amalgamation of two traditions of music, Jazz and Carnatic.

With guidance from the stalwart of Carnatic music flying into Melbourne city from India, Guru Kaaraikudi Mani, all the pieces performed were set to the rhythm structure of the Tala system of India. Meanwhile the beauty of Jazz was highlighted throughout the

show by leading artists in contemporary Australian music in their solo pieces.

Putting Mridangam at the centre of the stage, the performance began with some astounding jugalbandis, moving to a climax with all instruments ending on the same notes. The best part of the show was the play of chord progressions and rhythmic cadence.

An evening premeditated by Kathak artist and Guru Sumona Bhattacharya, offered a tribute to the legends of Kathak such as the legendary Guru Padma Shree Rani Karnaa ji and respected mentors of this genre such as Pt. Birju Maharaj, Nrityacharya Narayan Prasad, Pt. Sundar Prasad and Prof S.K.Saxena.

The evening begun with a welcome prayer ‘Poojan Chali Mahadeva, Chandrabani Parvati’ in Raga Malkauns.

The second piece ‘Brindavan Kunj Raas’

was performed by Sumona Bhattacharya herself along with her students. The piece also included a Gat Nikas. ‘Baant Chalat Mori Chunar Rang Dali’, ‘Bhopali Tarana’ and ‘Thumri’ also drove the concert’s hormonal energy.

The ‘Kathak Nritta Ang’ or the technical segment, performed with live music displayed the proficiency of students in rhythm patterns of Teen Taal, Ek taal and Dhamaar time cycles.

The live music was given by Rahul Bhattacharya on Sarod with vocalist Rahila Sharma and Pranav Mukherjee on Tabla.

The team is also seeking partners to collaborate in clinical trials or experts in the prosthetics field to validate the use of the e-glove and to continue optimizing the design of the glove. .

Parenting stress weakens mother-child communication Mothers who reported higher levels of parenting stress had less synchrony in brain activity with their child, than those who reported lower levels of parenting stress, researchers have found.

Excessive parenting stress can block maternal sensitivity, lead to reactions that punish the child and negatively affect the parent-child relationship for the long term.

“Our study shows that parenting stress may very well weaken mother-child communication early in the process of social interaction. Our observations likely stem from the stressed mother’s reduced ability to share her child’s perspective,” said study senior author Gianluca Esposito, Assistant Professor at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.

“This inability to appreciate the child’s viewpoint may reduce the quality of parental engagement and undermine the mother-child relationship in the long run,” Esposito said.

According to the study, when the parent and child show highly similar brain activity in the same areas of the brain i.e. greater synchrony, it suggests that both are highly tuned in to each other’s emotional states.

The study published in the journal Scientific Reports, analysed the brain activity of

31 pairs of mother and children from Singapore while they were watching children’s animation clips together.

The researchers used functional Nearinfrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) caps as a non-invasive way to measure brain activation based on blood concentration levels in the brain.

Before starting the experiment, mothers answered a questionnaire that aims to measure parenting stress.

The mother-child pairs then wore the fNIRS

caps with the child sitting on the mother’s lap while both watched animation clips from ‘Brave’, ‘Peppa Pig’ and ‘The Incredibles’ together.

The research team compared the mother’s and child’s brain activity to calculate brainto-brain synchrony and found that for those parents reporting higher levels of parenting stress, the degree of mother-child synchrony in part of the prefrontal cortex was diminished, compared to those parents reporting lower stress who had better synchrony.

hile all couples tend to fight on issues like children, money, and in-laws, researchers say that what distinguishes happy couples from others is their approach to conflict.

“Happy couples tend to take a solution-oriented approach to conflict and this is clear even in the topics that they choose to discuss,” said study lead author Amy Rauer, Associate Professor at the University of Tennessee in the US. For the study, published in the journal Family Process, the research team observed two samples of heterosexual, mostly white, educated couples who described themselves as happily married.

Fifty-seven of the couples were in their mid- to late 30s and had been married for an average of nine years; 64 of the couples were in their early 70s and had been married for an average of 42 years.

The couples were asked to rank their most and least serious issues.

While intimacy, leisure, household, health, communication and money were the most serious for the older couples, couples in both samples ranked jealousy, religion and family as the least serious.

When researchers observed

couples discussing marital problems, all couples focused on issues with clearer solutions, such as the distribution of household labour and how to spend leisure time.

The couples rarely chose to argue about issues that are more difficult to resolve, researchers said, adding that this strategic decision may be one of the keys to their marital success.

“Focusing on the perpetual, moredifficult-to-solve problems may undermine partners’ confidence in the relationship,” Rauer said.

The study also found that focusing first on more solvable problems may be an effective way to build up both partners’ sense of security in the relationship.

“If couples feel that they can work together to resolve their issues, it may give them the confidence to move on to tackling the more difficult issues,” Rauer said.

The researchers also found that couples who were married longer reported fewer serious issues and argued less overall.

“Being able to successfully differentiate between issues that need to be resolved versus those that can be laid aside for now may be one of the keys to a long-lasting, happy relationship,” Rauer added.

An individual’s premarital views about uncommitted sex, such as one-night stands or casual sex, may make it more difficult to remain blissfully married, suggests a new study.

Published in the journal Psychological Science, the research outlines several factors that can contribute to a marriage’s long-term happiness or dissolution, including one big red flag: An individual’s behaviour and attitude about uncommitted sexual relationships even before the marriage.

“Marital satisfaction generally declines over time, but what we’ve found is that when, prior to their marriage, one or both spouses hold generalised beliefs that uncommitted sex is OK, that can contribute to the failure of a marriage,” said the study’s first author Juliana French from Florida State University.

For the study, the research team collected and analysed data from 204 heterosexual, newly married couples.

They collected information on their behaviours and attitudes prior to the marriage as well as numerous factors related to their new marriages including marital satisfaction.

Over the course of several years, researchers followed up with couples to collect information about their marital satisfaction and catalogued data on which couples separated or filed for divorce.

In this study, the researchers focused on the degree to which people expressed “unrestricted sociosexual” behaviours, desires and attitudes prior to marriage, which indicated that they were more likely to engage in uncommitted sexual relationships such as one-night stands and generally believed that sex without love is okay.

Of the couples involved in the study, people who were relatively unrestricted were less satisfied at the start of their marriages.

Moreover, people who had relatively unrestricted partners experienced more rapid declines in satisfaction over the first several years of marriage, which ultimately predicted dissolution.

“What we found most surprising about these results was the fact that both couple members’ sociosexuality play an important role in long-term, marital outcomes,” French said.

“We found evidence suggesting that couples who maintain a consistent, satisfying sexual relationship or couples who maintain low levels of stress are buffered against these negative outcomes,” French added.

Try hot yoga

esearchers have found that taking hot yoga classes lowered the blood pressure of adults with elevated or stage 1 hypertension.

While there is evidence of regular, room-temperature yoga’s positive effect on blood pressure, little is known about hot yoga’s potential impact on blood pressure, said researchers who presented the study at Hypertension 2019 Scientific Sessions in the US. “The results of our study start the conversation that hot yoga could be feasible and effective in terms of reducing blood pressure without medication,” said study author Stacy Hunter, Assistant Professor at Texas State University.

Hot yoga is a modern practice, typically offered in a hot, humid atmosphere, with room temperatures around 105 degrees Fahrenheit.

For the study, the research team recruited 10 men and women, between ages 20-65 years. Participants had either elevated blood pressure (systolic blood pressure between 120 mmHg to 129 mmHg and diastolic pressure less than 80 mmHg) or stage 1 hypertension (130 mmHg to 139 mmHg systolic and 80 mmHg to 89 mmHg diastolic pressure.)

The research team randomly assigned five participants to take 12 weeks of three times-weekly hour-long hot yoga classes and they assigned the other five to a control group of no yoga classes.

They compared the average blood pressures of the two groups after the 12 weeks.

The researchers looked at average 24-hour blood pressure readings, as well as perceived stress and vascular function of participants in both groups.

They found systolic blood pressure dropped from an average 126 mmHg at the study’s start to 121 mmHg after 12 weeks of hot yoga.

Average diastolic pressure also decreased from 82 mmHg to 79 mmHg in the hot yoga group.

According to the study, average blood pressure did not change among the five adults in the control group, those who did not take hot yoga classes.

Perceived stress levels fell among those in the hot yoga group but not in the non-yoga group, the research said.

Drink tea to boost your brain function

esearchers have found that regular tea drinkers have better organised brain regions and this is associated with healthy cognitive function as compared to non-tea drinkers.

“We have shown in our previous studies that tea drinkers had better cognitive function as compared to non-tea drinkers,” Lei said.

For the study published in the journal Aging, the research team recruited 36 adults aged 60 and above and gathered data about their health, lifestyle and psychological wellbeing.

Eating nuts twice a week lowers heart attack risk

ating nuts at least twice a week can slash the risk of death from cardiovascular disease by almost 17 per cent, a new study suggests.

“Nuts are a good source of unsaturated fat and contain little saturated fat,” said study author Noushin Mohammadifard from Isfahan Cardiovascular Research Institute, Iran.

“They also have protein, minerals, vitamins, fibre, phytosterol, and polyphenols which benefit heart health. European and US studies have related nuts with cardiovascular protection but there is limited evidence from the Eastern Mediterranean Region,” Mohammadifard said.

The study presented at the ESC Congress 2019, examined the association between nut consumption and the risk of cardiovascular disease and death in the Iranian population.

A total of 5,432 adults aged 35 and older with no history of cardiovascular disease were randomly selected from urban and

rural areas.

The intake of nuts including walnuts, almonds, pistachios, hazelnuts and seeds was assessed in 2001 with a validated food frequency questionnaire.

Participants were interviewed every two years until 2013 for the occurrence of cardiovascular events and death.

During a median 12-year follow-up, there were 751 cardiovascular events (594 coronary heart disease and 157 stroke), 179 cardiovascular deaths and 458 all-cause deaths.

According to the findings, eating nuts two or more times per week was associated with a 17 per cent lower risk of cardiovascular mortality compared to consuming nuts once every two weeks.

The connection was robust even after adjusting for factors that could influence the relationship such as age, sex, education, smoking and physical activity, said the study.

Results have been mixed but show promise for some outcomes and now confirmed by updated meta analyses, according to the researchers.

“The pattern of findings suggests a complex balance of benefits and risks for each intervention and points to the need for additional research to determine which individuals may be most likely to derive a net benefit from these supplements,” said study lead author JoAnn Manson from Harvard University.

Nearly 26,000 US men and women participated in the nationwide VITAL clinical trial.

eavy cigarette smokers can reduce their risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) by 39 per cent within five years if they quit, researchers said.

It takes at least five to 10 years and perhaps up to 25 years after quitting, for CVD risk to become as low as that of a person who has never smoked, according to the study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).

“The cardiovascular system begins to heal relatively quickly after quitting smoking, even for people who have smoked heavily over decades,” said Hilary Tindle, Founding Director of the Vanderbilt Center for Tobacco Addiction and Lifestyle (ViTAL).

Researchers used data from the Framingham Heart Study, a longitudinal study of men and women from Massachusetts, which began enrolment in 1948.

The study used prospective data from 1954 through 2014 from 8,770 participants to determine the effect of lifetime smoking and smoking cessation on the risk of CVD, which includes myocardial infarction, stroke, CVD death and heart failure.

“Our team documented what happens to CVD risk after quitting smoking relative to people who continued to smoke and to those who never smoked,” said study lead author Meredith Duncan from Vanderbilt University.

According to the researchers from Tohoku University in Japan, during follow-up, 3.3 per cent of the participants developed prostate cancer.

Mushroom consumption once or twice a week was associated with an eight per cent lower risk of prostate cancer and consumption three or more times per week was associated with a 17 per cent lower risk.

However, according to the study lead author Shu Zhang: “the mechanism of the beneficial effects of mushrooms on prostate cancer remains uncertain.

esearchers have found that lipid turnover in the fat tissue decreases during ageing and makes it easier to gain weight, even if we don’t eat more or exercise less than before.

“The results indicate for the first time that processes in our fat tissue regulate changes in body weight during ageing in a way that is independent of other factors,” said study author Peter Arner, Professor at Karolinska Institute in Sweden.

For the study published in the journal Nature Medicine, the research team examined the fat cells in 54 men and women over an average period of 13 years.

In that time, all subjects, regardless of whether they gained or lost weight, showed decrease in lipid turnover in the fat tissue, that is the rate at which

lipid in the fat cells is removed and stored.

Those who didn’t compensate for the decrease by eating less calories gained weight by an average of 20 per cent, according to the study.

The researchers also examined lipid turnover in 41 women who underwent bariatric surgery and how the lipid turnover rate affected their ability to keep the weight off four to seven years after surgery.

The result showed that only those who had a low rate before the surgery managed to increase their lipid turnover and maintain their weight loss.

The researchers believe these people may have had more room to increase their lipid turnover than those who already had a high-level pre-surgery.

Vaping may harm fertility in young women

esearchers have found that ecigarette usage may impair fertility and pregnancy outcomes in young women.

For the study published in the Journal of the Endocrine Society, the researchers used a mouse model to examine whether e-cigarette exposure impairs fertility and offspring health.

Many young and pregnant women are using e-cigarettes as a safer alternative to smoking, but little is known about its effects on fertility and pregnancy outcomes.

After exposure to e-cigarette vapour, female mice showed decreased embryo implantation and a significant delay in the onset of pregnancy.

“We found that e-cigarette usage prior to conception significantly delayed implantation of a fertilized embryo to the uterus, thus delaying and reducing fertility (in mice),” said study author Kathleen Caron from the University of North Carolina.

Female offspring exposed to e-cigarettes in utero also failed to gain as much weight as those of control mice.

“These findings are important because they change our views on the perceived safety of e-cigarettes as alternatives to traditional cigarettes before and during pregnancy,” Caron added.

“We also discovered that e-cigarette usage throughout pregnancy changed the longterm health and metabolism of female offspring - imparting lifelong, second-generation effects on the growing foetus,” Caron added.

E-cigarettes are driving increases in tobacco product use among youth, researchers noted.

“I think there is a lot to learn and I feel very fortunate that I have been working in this industry for 15-16 years now. I am thankful that people have appreciated my work, but I have a long way to go. I think I have achieved really less in these 15 or 16 years,so I want to do many things in the rest of my career, because now with every year, you grow older and there are younger people with exciting talent who come along. You learn from them, but

as far as you are getting opportunity to act, and as far as people are interested in you, you have to enjoy it and give it your best,” said Shahid.

Asked if his life has changed after “Kabir Singh”, he said: “I don’t think I have observed big changes in my life after the release of that film. I feel life is still the same but I do feel that after the success of that film, I will get better opportunities, and people will feel more confident about signing me for their films, because when your films start working at the boxoffice then suddenly many people gets interested in you. My work has been the same over the past eight to 10 years and ‘Kabir Singh’ is a result of that process. I just want to do good films no matter how much business they do at the box-office, because I really feel there is a need to return the love that I have received.”

Swara Bhasker: Women’s safety has become a crisis

ctress Swara Bhasker has opened up on the consequences faced by victims in the Unnao and Chinmayanand cases andraised a serious question on womens safety.

“Women’s safety has become a crisis in India. We have a situation where at least three high profile members, who hold elected office are accused of rape. In the case of Unnao and Chinmayanand, the victims have had to face serious personal consequences for reporting rape. This is an alarm for our entire society. We need our lawmakers to walk the talk with regards to women’s safety,” Swara shared.

The victim in the Unnao case, who was allegedly kidnapped and raped by expelled Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar in Uttar Pradesh’s Unnao in 2017, had an accident in July this year. She was admitted to Delhi’s All In-

dia Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) for two months and discharged yesterday.

Now her family fears going back to their hometown because they are apprehensive about their safety.

The law student who has accused BJP leader Chinmayanand of rape, has been arrested by Uttar Pradesh Police on charges of extortion and blackmailing.

The Shahjahanpur student has alleged that she was raped by Chinmayanand for over a year.

Swara has raised her voice regarding the consequences faced by these rape victims. She tweeted reacting to the news of the Chinmayanand victim’s arrest shared by a journalist. “Beti inhi se bachao!! (save your daughter from such people) Shame!!” she wrote.

The actress also shared how she was trolled after tweeting her opinion. “I

tweeted regarding the same and one user/ troll made fun of the victim’s ordeal by asking if I was raped as well, with a smile at the end of the sentence. I reacted by using an expletive because I feel that sometimes people who use abusive language or try to slut shame women by cracking rape jokes need to be reminded that women can swear as well,” she said.

Taking a dig at misogynists, the actress added: “I don’t think it’s fair to expect women to brave the risk of being raped, the threat of arrest if it’s reported and also bear the burden of being dignified in the face of abuse. Sometimes misogynists have to hear it like it is.”

On the work front, Swara will next be seen in a web series titled “Rasbhari”.

She has also started working on her own production, a movie based on the life of a con artist.

elebrity chef Ranveer Brar says that as food has evolved with ages, one needs to be part of that evolution and not get stuck on authenticity.

He says food is a “subjective matter” that has made him face a lot of criticism with respect to taste or authenticity. “I believe that food has changed from generation to generation. It has evolved with ages... hence, I feel that we need to be a part of that evolution and not get stuck on authenticity,” Brar said.

“For instance, I recently posted a video of ‘chicken momos’ and a viewer commented that they were not authentic! My reply to them was that ‘chicken momo’ in itself doesn’t exist. The traditional ‘momo’, if you go to Lhasa for example, is made with red meat. So, one needs to look at a chef/ cook’s interpretation of a dish rather than remaining stuck in the hamster wheel,” he recalled.

Brar, who started serious cooking at the age of 15, feels that the food industry as a career avenue is more well-favoured now as there are several options beyond just donning the apron.

Brar believes that combining nutrition and taste is quite easy. “Once you realize that the basic premise of food is to provide nourishment. Moderation allows you to have the goodness of those ingredients in a balanced manner, without compromising on taste.”

“I align my philosophy to the line of thought that it shouldn’t be difficult to add taste to nourishment. Moderation is another aspect. If you start removing elements from a recipe to adhere to a diet restriction and so forth, it tends to make the entire dish to go awry. What I typically do instead is to use all ingredients in moderation because I strongly believe that the essential ingredients for any dish were added to serve a purpose.”

“Mike called us tonight completely speechless and said, “thank you from the bottom of my heart.” Y’all really are amazing for making this tweet blow up,” Hall said.

“We made it! Big hello from Mike, his brother, and whole family! We stopped in for an hour to catch up and of course get some dinner,” Hall announced in a tweet on September 1.

The tweet from 24-year-old musician Bri Hall, who uses the stage name “La Hara”, boosted the business of Roaming Rooster as people started lining up to get a taste of the fried chicken sandwich. Roaming Rooster has made a mark for the use of grain-fed antibiotic free chicken.

Indian food may finally be getting its due global recognition, but it will never be able to stand parallel to Italian cuisine on international stage owing to its complexity, says celebrity chef Ritu Dalmia.

“The popular of Indian food is on the rise, but I do not think it will ever attain the position that Italian food holds, as Indian cuisine is very complex and has particular flavours, which does not appeal to everyone,” Dalmia, cofounder of Italian restaurant chain Diva, said.

Dalmia, who has re-launched Diva Spiced, a blend of modern Asian dishes along with some regional Indian flavours, said her journey in the food industry was something she never thought of.

“I always loved cooking for pleasure, and after having a series of very bad meals I commented about it to some friends, who turned around and said if you think you can do better then why don’t you start a restaurant. Passionate

and enterprising that I was, I took their words to heart and within three months opened my first restaurant.

“I was forced to do my first catering by a client, who insisted that he wanted Diva food for his 40th birthday. That was the day I just said to myself, ‘hey this was fun, and I think I could do this’,” she said.

The chef says though her brand does many events, it is very “thoughtful and selective about the kind of events it wants to do”.

But today they are treated like celebrities, respected and admired. So I guess we have come a long way.”

She said her Diva catering has always been very conscious about not wasting food, long before the Delhi government decided to draft a law to keep a check on food wastage at social functions in the national capital.

“We work with NGOs like Feeding India, volunteers of which come at the end of every event to pick up all the leftovers. Then again, we are not a regular catering company with hundreds of dishes on our menu. Our motto has always been, “less is more,” she said.

Dalmia said cooking calms her down. “It is the only thing that soothes and relaxes me,” she said. The chef is now getting ready to launch her next venture in Noida. She also has plans to majorly expand in Italy.

here’s a ‘ genaissance ‘ in the making, at least going by the rising number of gin tastings, and new gin flavours and categories being introduced in the global market. But before you jump on to the bandwagon, it may be advisable to know that the Juniper-based spirit is infused with botanicals, which, if not paired with the right food, can lead to a mismatch.

“It’s an extremely refreshing drink, which works well with different flavours. So you can experiment with herbs and spices, and create your own style of drink,” says Hemant Mundkar, brand ambassador of Bacardi India’s Spirits portfolio.

“But for a well-curated meal that goes just right with gin, the general rule of thumb is to avoid spicy food, which can completely overpower your palate,” he adds.

Gin evolved in the UK before it won the world over. So Mundkar suggests the classic English pub-style food – fish and chips, and sliders as its ideal pairing.

From the Indian platter, mini versions of onion kachoris, samosas, and tandoori food complement it perfectly. But he cautions against going for food rich in spices as Indian food generally tends to be spicy.

“From the Mediterranean spread, gin goes well with everything from smoked salmon and cheese and crackers to stuffed black olives, Mezze platters, and Caesar and Greek salads,” says the Bangalore-based spirits expert.

From among the Asian cuisines, Mundkar suggests pairing the spirit with dim sums (pork, vegetables or seafood), tempura (vegetables and prawns) and a Sushi or Sashimi platter.

Pav Bhaji is Mumbai’s all time favourite and the most popular snack/meal. It is amazingly easy, nutrious, tasty and one of my specialty. To quote my children always say: “this is the best pav bhaji Mom!” A perfect meal for a Saturday brunch beach parties or picnics.

Indian vegetable puree served with Buns METHOD: Boil all the vegetables till soft and mash them. Set aside. In a large pan, heat oil and butter and sauté the onions till golden brown. Add tomatoes, salt and bhaji masala. Stir well and add the potatoes and vegetables. Mix well and cook about 10 mins. Add lemon juice and check the seasoning.

Serve Hot.

INGREDIENTS: 8 med potatoes boiled, peeled and mashed 1 cup cauliflower chopped 1 cup chopped mixed vegetables carrots, beans and peas 2 large onions chopped 5 or more juicy tomatoes chopped 2 tbsp olive oil or ghee 1 tbsp butter 2 green chillies slit and diced
