Morrison government increases regional migration target

CANBERRA, OCT 26: The Morrison government is stepping up its commitment to regional Australia by ensuring our migration system encourages skilled migrants to live and work in our smaller cities and regions.

In March this year, the government announced it would reduce the permanent migration cap from 190,000 to 160,000 places, and within that set aside 23,000 places for regional visas.

Following unprecedented growth (124 per cent) in the number of regional visas granted in the first quarter of this programme year, the Government is increasing the total number of regional places to 25,000.

The definition of regional Australia for migration purposes will also change.

Perth and the Gold Coast will no longer be classified as major cities, ensuring they remain an attractive destination for skilled migrants and international students.

The new definition will come into effect on 16 November.

Locations outside of Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane will have access to the 25,000 visa places, priority processing and international university graduates who live in these locations will be eligible to apply for more time in Australia on a poststudy work visa.

CANBERRA, OCT 30: Power reliability will get a $1 billion boost as part of the Liberal National Government’s plan to ensure Australian households, businesses and industries get a fair deal on energy.

The Liberal National Government will establish a $1 billion Grid Reliability Fund to support Government investment in new energy generation, storage and transmission infrastructure, including eligible projects shortlisted under the Underwriting New Generation Investments (UNGI) program.

The new $1 billion fund will be administered by the Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC), drawing on the energy and financial markets expertise that has seen the CEFC invest more than $7 billion in clean energy since its establishment in 2012. The Fund represents the first new capital provided to the CEFC since it began.

The Prime Minister said the Fund would also help unlock private sector investment for projects that would secure the grid and put downward pressure on prices.

Mining industry to receive skills boost

CANBERRA, NOV 1: Trainees and apprentices will be taught skills that better match the needs of employers in the mining industry, under a Skills Organisations Pilot announced by the Coalition Government on Friday.

The Pilot will ensure trainees and apprentices, particularly those in remote areas, are part of a growing workforce to support the mining industry, as well as the broader Australian economy, said an official press release.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison says the Pilot will ensure more Australians are able to get a highly-skilled job.

“This is about making sure more Australians are able to find a job, particularly kids in remote areas.

I want these kids to come out of training college with the skills they need to go land a job in the mining industry,” said the Prime Minister.

Indian-origin researcher from Sydney wins award for work on batteries transition away from fossil fuels for energy generation and transportation.

Dr Neeraj Sharma from the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Sydney — considered one of the global leaders in the use of neutron and X-ray scattering methods to study materials for next-generation lithium-ion batteries – has won the ‘Early Career Researcher of the Year (Physical Sciences)’.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian honoured 35-yearold Dr Sharma, from the School of Chemistry at UNSW, with the award at the Government House in Sydney, the university said in a statement on Friday.

The award was given for his work in lithium-ion batteries found in electronic devices, electric vehicles and the grid, as well as next-generation battery systems such as sodium-ion batteries that will leave minimal environmental impact, and

Researchers from UNSW won half of the science and engineering awards announced by the NSW Premier, including the top prize for ‘NSW Scientist of the Year’.

“Such achievements will inspire more students from India to take up meaningful research careers,” said Amit Dasgupta, UNSW Country Head, India.

UNSW Engineering has launched new streams starting February 2020 in mining engineering, renewable energy and petroleum engineering, and is in the process of finalising a new Robotics stream to be available from early 2020.

“Students in India will find these courses exciting. We would like more meritorious students from the region to apply for the ‘Future of Change’ scholarships, available exclusively to the Indian students,” Dasgupta added.

MELBOURNE, Oct 19: The intermittent rains notwithstanding, thousands of Melburnians showed up at Federation Square on Saturday to show their love for Diwali, the festival of lights hosted by Celebrate India. From dancing to music to food stalls to the fireworks, Fed Square was transformed into a cultural hotspot. Celebrate India founder Arun Sharma hopes the festival of lights will continue up to Christmas

in celebration of multiculturalism and acknowledgement of all the religions and festivals that shape Australia’s social fabric.

Leading up to Diwali, the organisation conducted two successful competitions – the Unique Talent Quest and Dance for Diwali contests with focus on the younger generation to carry on the culture. These talents showcased their

skills on stage as they went on receive generous prizes.

This year, Light for Diwali, another unique project, was led by co-founder Jaya Sharma, in which volunteers participated in huge numbers. Under the project, concrete blocks around Federation Square and around the city were decorated with traditional Indian folk art. It was met with applause and praises from many.

The six-hour event will premier on 16th February 2020 and will be organised under the banner My Desi Star and will provide a platform to the young talent for getting ready their extraordinary opportunities fulfilled and a chance to shine in front thousands of people.

The festival will have five categories of singing, dancing, music composing, comedy and modelling.

With each of the founders greatly respected and recognised among the South Asian community and along with their significant contacts among the film fraternity, this festival promises to be a success with the presence of a magnanimous number of audience.

Victorian ties with Korea take off with new flights

South Korea is an important trading partner with Victoria, with two-way trade worth more than $3.2 billion.

MELBOURNE, NOV 2: Major South Korean airline Asiana is launching direct flights between Melbourne and Seoul in a move that will strengthen ties with a key trading partner and attract more tourists and investment to Victoria.

Asiana will launch a seasonal service from late December, with weekly flights in 290-seat A330 aircraft.

The Andrews Labor Government is partnering with Visit Victoria, Melbourne Airport, the City of Melbourne and the Consul-General of the Republic of Korea to support the trial season.

Single-use plastic bag ban from November 1

MELBOURNE, NOV 1: The Andrews Government has delivered on its commitment to ban singleuse plastic shopping bags in Victoria, reducing plastic pollution and helping protect the environment.

From today, single-use plastic shopping bags with a thickness of 35 microns or less are banned from all retail outlets, including supermarkets, fashion stores, fast food outlets, pharmacies, service stations and many more.

Minister for Environment Lily D’Ambrosio today visited Queen Victoria Market, which has been plastic bag free since May 2019.

The single-use plastic bag ban has been introduced following extensive community consultation on tackling plastic pollution, which showed significant support, with 96 per cent in favour of the ban.

Approximately 150 million plastic bags end up in our oceans and waterways each year, contributing to an estimated eight million tonnes of plastic dumped into the ocean.

To support the community in moving to reusable bags, Sustainability Victoria is running a Better Bag Habits campaign – helping Victorian households to remember their phone, wallet, keys and bag before leaving home.

The Labor Government’s major investments in roads and public transport, education, family violence prevention, disability and aged care will create thousands of jobs over the next decade. The review is focused on ensuring that the post-secondary education and training sectors are ready and capable of delivering the workforce needed.

Private industry and large employers have a critical role to play in investing in the training and development of their workforces. The review will also look at reforms to further strengthen the role of private employers in training and workforce development.

So far this year, 36 motorcycle riders have lost their lives Victorian roads, compared with 38 deaths for all of 2018 and 29 at the same time last year.

he money transfer business is personal for Ismail Ahmed. It was cash wired by his family that allowed him to make the final leg of his journey from escaping fighting in his native Somaliland to London in 1988, to take up a university scholarship.

In 2010, he founded WorldRemit in a career that has centred on remittances.

“That was the beginning of my interest in remittances,” he said. “Very early I learnt about how remittances worked … it was a key source of discomfort as well as being expensive.”

NEW DELHI, NOV 2: Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra in a tweet on Saturday wondered if many Indian travellers fake the need of wheelchairs at airports, sparking a heated debate among his followers.

As a student, Ahmed encountered the inconvenience of having to trek to the office of a transfer agent that took up to 20 per cent of his money in fees. So it was his small jobs as a student that sustained him and his refugee family as well in those early years.

Today, WorldRemit is one of a handful of fintech firms that is upending the remittances business that has long been dominated by three US firms — Western Union, MoneyGram and Ria — as well as banks.

Indian govt asks Twitter for info about 474 accounts

The Indian government has asked Twitter to provide information about 474 accounts and requested to remove or withhold content about 504 accounts on violating the law of the land in the first six months of this year.

According to Twitter’s latest transparency report, it helped the Indian government in 5 per cent of the information request cases and complied in 6 per cent of cases for account removal requests. In total, 1,268 Twitter accounts were specified for information requests and 2,484 accounts for removal requests from India.

The information request “data includes the number of government requests received for account information, as well as the percentage of requests we complied with in whole or in part from India”, said Twitter.

People judge women CEOs more harshly for ethical failures

NEW YORK, Oct 25: Women CEOs do not always have it easy as researchers have found that people are less likely to support an organization after an ethical failure if the business is helmed by a female.

In the first experiment, 512 participants read a business news article about an auto manufacturer and then filled out a survey about their intent to buy a vehicle from the company.

Female leaders, however, receive less negativity for general business failures, said the study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.

One-third of the participants read about an ethical failure, one-third read about a competence failure and the final third only read the company description.

“Our study found that consumers’ trust in, and willingness to support, an organisation after a failure varied based on the gender of the organisation’s leader and the type of incident,” said lead author of the study Nicole Votolato Montgomery of the University of Virginia in the US.

Afterward, the participants were asked how likely they were to purchase a car from the company the next time they were in the market for a vehicle and reported their trust in the organisation.

“Women incur greater penalties for ethical transgressions because of persistent gender stereotypes that tend to categorise women as having more communal traits than men, such as being more likable, sensitive and supportive of others,” Nicole Votolato said.

Across three experiments, the researchers examined how gender would influence perceptions of female-led and male-led organisations after experiencing a competence failure, such as a product flaw, or an ethical failure, such as if the product flaw was known but not disclosed to the public for a long period of time.

“When participants were told that the company had previously been made aware of a fuel sensor problem and failed to take immediate action, an ethical failure, they reported less intent to purchase from the company when the CEO was a woman than when the CEO was a man,” said Montgomery.

The findings of the other two experiments further demonstrated how gender stereotypes play a vital role in shaping our expectations of leaders and their organisations.

GETTING MARRIED IN AUSTRALIA

Under time pressure to answer, people generally lie to you WHEN asked to answer questions quickly and impulsively - be it at work or home - people may lie to you by responding with a socially desirable answer rather than an honest one, say researchers.

In other words, time pressure does not bring out a person’s good ‘true self’ and people may default to their desire to appear virtuous even if it means misrepresenting themselves.

“The method of ‘answer quickly and without thinking’, a long staple in psychological research, may be doing many things, but one thing it does is make people lie to you and tell you what they think you want to hear,” said John Protzko, a cognitive scientist at University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB).

The idea has always been that we have a divided mind -- an intuitive, animalistic type and a more rational type.

“The more rational type is assumed to always be constraining the lower order mind. If you ask people to answer quickly and without thinking, it’s supposed to give you sort of a secret access to that lower order mind,” Protzko explained in a paper published in the journal Psychological Science.

To test this assumption, Protzko and UCSB colleague Jonathan Schooler devised a test of 10 simple yes-or-no questions.

Through a survey, respondents were asked to take fewer than 11 seconds, or alternatively, more than 11 seconds to answer each question.

They found that the fast-answering group was more likely to give sociallydesirable answers, while the slow answers and the ones who were not given any time constraints (fast or slow) were less likely to do so.

The team plans to examine previous studies that used the quick-answer technique to see how much results might be driven by participants giving sociallydesirable answers.

NOBLE EFFORTS TO PAVE THE DIVINE PATH FOR OTHERS

A

s the world celebrates the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev, the founder of Sikhism and the first of the ten Sikh Gurus this month, a look at one man’s mission to spread the message of Guru Nanak Dev in his own small ways. The works of Jatinder Singh Uppal aka Paul Uppal is far from small. Paul has been working for 30 years to pave the divine path for others.

It was in 1984 that Paul moved to Thailand from Australia to open an office there. He admits the business was not at its best financial health. But life took a turn when he met a holy man by the name of Gyani Arjan Singh, who imparted a lot of wisdom and guided him thereon.

Prior to meeting the holy man, Paul had never prayed much in his life, but he felt the desire to do so after meeting him. He asked what he should pray and was told to chant the Mool Mantar, which is the words first spoken by the spiritual master Guru Nanak after enlightenment and is the first composition in the Sikh holy text, the Adi Granth. Paul began praying in 1985 and has not stopped since.

After he started praying, Paul believes he got a clear message in English: ‘Make God your partner’. He admits he was not on the ‘divine holy track’ and was perplexed by the message. When he thought deeper, he decided to open an account in God’s name. On the Gyaniji’s next visit home, Paul took him along to open an account for God, whereby he decided to put every 5 cents or one Thai Baht for every garment exported, he being in the textiles and fashion business. So, every month Paul put in 5,000 baht for every 5000 garments.

The business began doubling and by the time he realised, he had accumulated 16 million baht or 650,000 dollars in God’s account. He would use that money to buy the Blackburn gurudwara in Melbourne, which was eventually transferred to the congregation on Guru Nanak’s birthday in 1994.

But the philosophy that guided Paul was simple and something he lives by. “This is the 10 per cent factor that every religion/ faith believe in. If you give God 10 per cent of your income, you have done the right job. So why are we successful is because we are his partner.”

The 10 per cent factor in his life has armed Paul with the resources and good will to carry on with many projects to help the poor and the needy and to guide them on to the spiritual path in India and around the world. On this milestone 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev, Paul shares an insight into his work, life and philosophy with G’day India.

What is the significance of the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev ji?

Guru Nanak Dev ji came to this planet for one reason: to tell us human beings not to create divisions. We all have the same blood; we may have different skin colours but everything in our body is created by one Creator. We split ourselves into religions and millions of people have

been killed, so God sent Nanak to stop the killing and bring peace to this world.

Nanak came to tell us ‘na Hindu, na Musalmaan’, there is no religion but one religion – the religion of mankind.

When Nanak passed away, both the Muslims and Hindus claimed ownership of his mortal remains. To avoid a fight, the warring factions decided they will leave Nanak’s mortal remains, cover it with flowers and a sheet of cloth and discuss the funeral rites next morning.

The Sikh, Hindu and Muslim devotees returned the following morning on September 22, 1539 A.D. They carefully removed the sheet but were amazed and astonished to discover that no trace at all remained of Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s mortal body. Only fresh flowers placed the night before remained and not a single bud had wilted of any blossom.

The Sikhs, Hindu and Muslim devotees responded by erecting two separate memorials to commemorate Guru Nanak Dev and revere him as their own. Two shrines, one built by Sikhs and Hindus and the other by the Muslims, were placed side by side on the banks of the River Ravi in Kartarpur, a part of Punjab located in modern day Pakistan. So, Nanak’s birthday is an event that is celebrated by everyone.

How do you build your personal divine wealth?

You need to enjoy, otherwise you can never do this. I have projects in India, England, Australia and other countries.

I feel I have all the time in the world and I ask Him for more, but He will only give that much because he doesn’t want you to get stuck or be in danger.

Victoria changed over the past 30 years?

It is very sad to say that not only the Sikhs, but everybody is moving away from religion. People are not connecting to God. There is a big shift away from religion and the divinity. That is because the negative energies are greater today, so you have to be very lucky to remain in the divine circle. You have to fight to remain in the divine circle. It will only get worse as time goes by because we live in the age of Kaljug (age of downfall), where other things such as money, property and building fortunes are more important than building our personal divine wealth.

What is your message to younger Sikhs?

If you can read the scriptures, please do. Those who want the scriptures can call me, we send them out to anybody in the world. Guru Nanak ji laid out three principles: Naam Japna, Kirat Karna and Vand Chhakna. It means, keep God in mind at all times, earn an honest living and share your wealth. If you live by these rules, you are on the path to meeting God.

Why did you start your projects with India and not elsewhere?

Punjab is the land of the gurus and home to the Golden Temple. Unfortunately, it is also a land with the greatest poverty along with the problems of drug addiction, high number of suicides and worse living conditions. I began by supporting an organisation and distributing over millions of copies of the Sacred Nitnem, but somehow it didn’t work out well because there was no honesty in what was being done. So, I started on my own and set up a small office with two staff. But soon my staff grew, and we eventually bought our own office.

to schools, colleges, temples etc., telling people to do the right thing: make your birth a reason to meet the Creator. The kids who have started to pray won’t drink or do drugs because their conscience has been awakened - not by us but by them reading the scriptures through which they find the strength to adopt the three principles of Nanak and become successful in their lives. We have surpassed 500,000 children so far.

Some of our projects are Save Our Sikhs and Save Our Souls. The latter is a longterm project because we are looking at one family to adopt a child and we are targeting 250,000 families to educate 250,000 children and help change lives.

Other projects include Sewa (service), joining people with God through the scriptures. We are successful in that.

In Divine Dastar, we have a team of 30 volunteers who teach people how to tie turbans and the reasons behind it. For Guru Granth Sahib ji Ki Sewa, we have eight staff in Patiala go to temples every day to clean the Guru Granth Sahib. They have covered around 2000 temples to date and it’s a very difficult sewa. Then we have Kriya Guidance programs in schools where we ask the children to dream big and emulate successful people from all walks of life.

But our crown sewa is the distribution of the Guru Granth Sahib which I started on July 12, 1994. This is a program where families come to take the Guru Granth Sahib to their homes from our Melbourne house. I believe, all other sewas I undertook started from there. They are branches of one tree. When God needs more money, he increases the business.

Now that the grandkids are coming, we pray that they join this path and make this grow.

Looking Into The Terrain of Mental Health

I

n July this year, when a bright, young entrepreneur took his life, it left the community in shock.

A devoted son, husband and father to two young children and a man described as “the beacon within the Indian community” in Victoria, this was an incident that once again drew the attention on how young members within the community are sadly not able to deal with the stress and pressures of living as a migrant in a new country.

Elsewhere in Western Australia, Suresh Rajan of the Western Australia Ethnic Communities Council has dealt with 12 deaths by suicides among the Indian community of WA in the last 10 years.

While there are cases of mental health issues among migrants and students, research findings on the prevalence of mental health-related concerns in immigrant populations are incomplete and contradictory, although there are reasons to expect that prevalence in these groups will be higher, reports say.

Experts are of the opinion that these deaths could have been avoided and mental health issues tackled well if there is a specialised, culturally appropriate mental health service. But more importantly, there appears to be lack of awareness and understanding about mental health among most multicultural communities.

Prabhat Sangwan, a long-time mental health volunteer in Melbourne and founder of MANAS, an organisation that aims to educate and raise awareness on mental health among the Indian community here, says like any other Indian she had always equated mental health with madness or anyone who appears weird.

“In truth, mental health has nothing to do with madness, it is a medical issue where you can’t see the visible symptoms. If you come to know about a person and his/her particular behaviour or why the person is behaving differently or, in general, if you talk to the person empathetically without judging then you will know that this person is experiencing mental health issues. Then you get to know the reasons behind the behaviour and recommend the person the appropriate medical treatment,” she says.

Prabhat says, “In our community the acceptance is only of depression, not of any other mental health issues. In depression too, there is no acceptance of clinical depression. We associate any sadness with depression, whereas it is not that. Along with depression there are many other mental health issues as well which we need to understand.”

And volunteering with Mind Australia, which is one of the largest community mental organisation in Australia, gave Prabhat the understanding and the tools to help others with any such issues.

Prabhat was also surprised by the fact that there was a family member of hers who was experiencing mental health concerns from many years and all this while the person wasn’t cared from the mental health perspective because there was no knowledge or understanding.

“After years of volunteering in mental health field, it just joined the dots for me as to why the person was behaving in that particular way and why there is a medical need for treatment. This also gave me the motivation to work in the area and to raise awareness. The more I started working, the more I identified the need as many friends and community members started approaching and supporting me,” says Prabhat.

“The copies will be available in digital version too besides the hard copies which will be in libraries and community centres,” says Prabhat.

Like Prabhat, there are other members in the community who are working in the mental health area. Vasan Srinivasan has been trying to understand mental health for more than 20 years and today as vice-chairperson of Mental Health Foundation Australia, the oldest mental health association in Australia founded in 1930, he agrees that one has to reach out to the communities.

In 2017, Srinivasan undertook the mammoth task of bringing 55 nations together as multicultural ambassadors and created a committee to help connect with the communities.

MANAS was founded in May 2018 with the help of family and friends, says Prabhat, who organises workshops as an individual within the capacity of a mental health volunteer for Indian community in the City of Whittlesea.

On October 20, a national walk was held across cities in Australia and a committee being flown in every state.

The first committee that put its hands up was the Indian community and taking the leap, proudly claims Srinivasan, who has played a key role in implementing many steps to promote mental health awareness in Victoria.

On October 10, MANAS released a booklet for communities from India and the subcontinent community. It carries all the information for understanding mental health and the system. It is primarily for the people of Whittlesea but it can guide any Indian and people of the subcontinent anywhere. This is the first big initiative for the Indian community and the book will be translated in other languages too over time.

Both Srinivasan and Prabhat agree there are major gaps in our knowledge about mental health and that as a community we need to keep talking about mental health. “We don’t talk about it, we push it away and say ‘go to the temple, you will be alright’ or ‘take a Panadol’,” says Srinivasan, adding “It is also the culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities who are reluctant or ashamed about seeking help for mental

Loneliness is another big issue here, says Prabhat. “There is the added pressure when you are from a migrant background because there are so many things that you need to take care of. You come into a society where you don’t have any support system. It takes a lot of toll on your mental health and the first thing that you ignore is your health.”

But Prabhat is happy about the outcomes her service is bringing. It is slow but the pace is steady. “We have been contacted by people where we have connected them to the right person/ organisation and it is satisfying to know that they got better. It gives me motivation to work more.”

On his part, Srinivasan says, “We would like to send this message to community groups that mental health is not a stigma, mental health issues can be cured. Also, mental illness does not discriminate against culture. Culturally appropriate and sensitive mental health interventions are very important.”

Both Prabhat and Srinivasan are working towards reaching out to the communities in many ways. Looking ahead, Prabhat says, “As a community we need to care for others, follow our instincts and keep asking if we think there is something not right with someone we know. We need to listen in the same way we listen to physical health concerns and in a non-judgemental way, even if we do not have any idea about mental health.”

Prabhat would also love to have more volunteers. “There is no glamour but there is surely immense satisfaction. If you think you can do it, we would love you to work with us. People who had or have lived experience of mental health concerns will be given preference,” she appeals.

How a Sydney-based family is raising awareness about organ donation Deyaan’s heart was received by a seven-year old girl suffering from endstage organ failure. His kidneys were donated to an 11-year-old and a 15-yearold, while his liver went to a 31-year-old man.

Back in Sydney, the Udanis wanted to honour Deyaan’s life and memory.

Initially they began with talking about the importance of organ donation and campaigning for organ and tissue donation in New South Wales.

W

hen your seven-year-old comes home from school and suddenly asks you if you have registered to become an organ donor in the eventuality of death, you brush aside the topic thinking he is too young to even know anything about organ donation, reflects Rupesh Udani.

But Rupesh proved himself wrong.

It was 2015. His children Deyaan and Naisha, who were then 7 and 9 years of age respectively, were well informed thanks to their fortnightly spiritual classes at the Shrimad Rajchandra Mission Dharampur (SRMD) in Sydney. They told him, “When you are dead, why not help other people. This is the best gift you can give, dad.”

Both his children told him that if something happened to them they will be the first to donate. Although the conversation pushed him into a state of quietude for a moment, Rupesh replied he loved his organs too much to donate and didn’t want to talk about this topic.

That same year in December, Rupesh and his family went on a holiday to Mumbai and were due to return soon.

Deyaan, who had been feeling unwell for a week, had to be taken to hospital on the day they were flying back to Sydney on January 19, 2016. Doctors initially suspected it to be a case of dengue, recalls Rupesh, but after complaint of his headaches an MRI test confirmed a blood clot and a haemorrhage. Deyaan was diagnosed with severe cerebral sinus venous thrombosis. What ensued was an operation lasting 16 to 18 hours, but despite best efforts by doctors Deyaan could not be saved.

It was then that the Udanis decided to fulfil Deyaan’s wish. When he was declared brain dead, they approached the doctors for Deyaan’s organs to be donated. “At that point of time, the doctors were very surprised. Then we had to explain that it was his wish. They offered counselling and we refused because we were aware. At that point of time it became big news,” says Rupesh.

However, last year Rupesh and Mili started Saffron Day to work towards a cause that their young child had firmly believed in. Saffron Day is an initiative of SRMD, which is a community partner of Donate Life, the Organ and Tissue Authority (OTA) working with states and territories, clinicians, the community sector and the general public to deliver the Australian Government’s national program to improve organ and tissue donation and transplantation outcomes in Australia.

Saffron Day was launched last year on November 18 and marked a new high in the campaign by the Udanis. This year Saffron Day was held on October 22.

Saffron Day is a day that raises awareness about organ donation and urges all Australians to register for organ donation, discuss with family about one’s intentions to donate a gift of life and keep one’s dreams and legacy to live on. It asks for three simple steps: register your decision to save lives as an organ & tissue donor at saffronday. org, wear something orange and/or use the merchandise provided, take a photo and post on social media with the hashtags #SaffronDay #doitforDeyaan, and encourage family and friends to do the same.

“There is no requirement to raise funds.

Simply display a piece of saffron on your clothing and begin a conversation with your friends and family about organ donation,” says Rupesh, adding, “Saffron Day is a unique structure,” explains Rupesh. “It is very separate from what we do at Shrimad Rajchandra Mission Dharampur. We kept it neutral, secular and we focus only on organ donation.

This cause is very dear to us.”

The colour saffron has a special importance to the Udani family. “Deyaan’s favourite colour was orange. When we had a look at his last few photos, he was wearing orange-coloured clothes. And when you look at the meaning of saffron, it is expensive and rare, when you add saffron into a bucket of water it will turn into orange akin to spreading love.

Saffron stands for courage and sacrifice.

That’s why we have chosen that name,” says Rupesh.

Saffron Day has attracted a lot of participation from people of all walks of life such as Ernest Lawrence, an

Aboriginal from Darwin who is supporting this cause. On his part, Rupesh is working closely with the community there to spread the awareness on organ donation.

Interestingly, statistics say we are more likely to be in the receiving side than the giving side. What that means is, there are only one or two per cent chance of us being able to donate because death has to be in the ICU of the hospital.

“The important lesson is you need to talk to your family first. When you are in ICU you can’t take any decision and it is a very tough decision for family members when someone is in ICU. That way you do not lose out on the potential to save other lives,” says Rupesh.

In Australia at any given time, there are around 1400 people waitlisted for a transplant. A further 11,000 are on dialysis, many of whom would benefit from a kidney transplant, according to Donate Life.

For Rupesh, his current involvement is like a peace mission and he believes one of the highest forms of donations is organ donation. Although Saffron Day is the highlight event of the year, he and his team of active volunteers work through the whole year. “We don’t take any donation, all we ask is for people to register in any organ

donation registry such as saffronday.org or donatelife.gov.au.”

In his short span of life, Deyaan left his mark and led by example. An incident that comes to Rupesh’s memory is a school sports carnival when Deyaan lost the racing competition to help a fellow competitor who had fallen on the ground, both ran together to finish last. He was five-year-old then but he told his father, ‘it is not always about winning’. Rupesh can still see the smile on his little boy’s face who carried such wisdom and who left smiles on the faces of others even in his passing.

Yet another noticeable change, observes Ashwini, is that 10 years ago people used to book months or a year in advance, now customers are more confident and are booking one or two months in advance.

Asked what their key to success is especially when communicating to clients on phone, Ashwini says, ‘’The main key here is to understand the customer needs because not every person has the same needs. A single student has a different need compared to somebody who is travelling with two kids without the father. We try to understand each customer’s need, it can get challenging at times because nowadays consumers also feel they know a lot, they will do their own research on internet but what applies to one particular traveller does not necessarily apply to the other. Giving them an option based on what is best suitable to their need is the key.’’

Gaura Travels has also started online booking. With excellence at working within systems and staying focused on execution and given the on-demand culture of the times, Ashwini and Abhishek have found ways to find success.

Rohit all set to surpass Dhoni in Delhi T20I NEW DELHI, NOV 3: Stand-in skipper Rohit Sharma is on the verge of achieveing another feat on Sunday when he leads the Men in Blue in the first contest of the three-match T20I rubber at the Arun Jaitley Stadium as the star opener will become the most-capped Indian T20I player after M.S. Dhoni.

Rohit has played 98 T20Is since making his debut at the World T20 in 2007 and will go past Dhoni’s tally of 98 T20Is for India.

Holiday makers thronging the Mall, await their turn for boat rides. Needless to say boating is one of the favourite activities in Nainital, along with trekking in the densely forested mountains that surround the town.

N

ainital is located in the Kumaon foothills of the outer Himalayas about 285 km from Dehradun and 345 km from New Delhi. A picturesque hill town in the northern state of Uttarakhand, Nainital is set in a valley at an altitude of 6,358 feet above sea level. This beautiful town is surrounded by seven hills - Ayarpata, Devpata, Hanibani, China, Alma, LadiyaKanta and Sher-Ka-Danda. Popularly referred to as ‘Sapta-Shring, these majestic hills, the waters of the lake and areas natural beauty all add to the beauty of Nainital.

From the highway that meets the main Mall at Tallital, there is a splendid view of the beautiful Naini Lake, that looks like it is nestling in a cocoon. Here one can see brightly coloured sails of yachts lined up on the calm waters of the lake.

Mythology counts this hill station, named after the pear-shaped Naini Lake, among the 64 Shakti Peeths - religious sites where body parts of Hindu Goddess Parvati are believed to have fallen in her incarnation as Sati.

It is said that Naini Lake was the spot where Sati’s eyes (‘Nain’ in Sanskrit) fell as her husband Lord Shiva carried her dismembered corpse around the earth.

History attributes the discovery of Nainital to P. Barron, a British sugar trader from Shahjahananpur, in 1839.

He was so taken with the lake and its lovely forested surroundings that he soon returned with a sailing boat and decided to build a house naming it ‘Pilgrim’s Cottage’. The cottage, which is almost 180 years old, is still in existence.

The process of settlement begun by Barron led to the building of colonial villas, cottages being added to what was a secluded mountain resort.

Erected in 1844, the Church of ‘St. John in the Wilderness’ is one of Nainital’s earliest buildings and is possibly the finest church in any Indian hill station. The church was named by the Bishop of Calcutta, who was visiting the town then. The town was very much a wilderness then.

As more and more buildings came up; it became a lively summer retreat for British soldiers and officials. It soon became an important administrative town and was declared the summer capital of what was then known as United Provinces. In the later years, Nainital became the summer residence of the Governor of the United Provinces. The older parts of Nainital continue to retain historical memories colonial vestiges that include sprawling bungalows, public schools, churches and the Christian cemetery.

Disaster hit the town in 1880, when a landslide killed a large number of people and destroyed all the buildings including the temple of the town’s patron deity, Nanda Devi. While the Church of ‘St. John in the Wilderness’ contains a brass memorial to the victims of these landslide, who were buried in its graveyard, on the area, where the Nanda Devi temple earlier stood, a large area known as ‘The Flats’ was created for a new temple.

The new Nanda Devi Temple was built on the site as planned and continues to draw pilgrims on festivals. To prevent further disasters, storm water drains were constructed,and strict building laws were ordered.

Located in the vicinity of several other lesser known hill stations, Nainital has the advantage of being connected with motorable roads all through the year.

Surrounded with forests of oak, pine and deodar, it offers peaceful wooded lanes for those who prefer to walk as

The latter half of the 19th century saw the founding of a number of European schools in Nainital. By 1906, there were over a dozen of these schools that were solely meant for British children. There were separate schools for boys and girls. The Diocesan Boys School and Girls School were under the guidance of the Church of England and was renamed as Sherwood College. Another school, Philander Smith’s College (for boys) was governed by an American and is now Birla Vidya Mandir. St Joseph’s College remains a Roman Catholic institution, while the Wellesley School is an American institution.

The first signs of change came early in the 20th century, when Indians also began arriving in Nainital, which had so far remained an exclusive English preserve. While Indian officers and professionals began arriving as part of the annual migration of the state government of United Provinces to Nainital every summer, the big change came when British civil servants started receiving subsidies for their annual holidays in England. This was when their summer visits to hill stations came to a halt, leaving the area to Indians.

Dr. Janaki Rangarajan, an acclaimed Bharatanatyam artist will be coming to Melbourne with her new production combining traditional Bharatanatyam with the spoken word in English.

In a telephonic interview, Dr. Janaki explained that, “Unravelled is a solo dance production that explores the unseen layers of the iconic Draupadi through various episodes from her life and extrapolating such events to the life of a modern woman. This production is overwhelming and beautiful at the same time.”

She added, “I had this question for a long time that what is it about this woman - the only mortal woman from the Indian epics who is worshipped as a Goddess - which has captured the imagination of poets and writers for centuries? It is very close to my heart; it is my personal quest.”

When asked about the uniqueness about the production, she stated, “This production thoroughly utilizes the Bharatanatyam vocabulary and the backdrop of Draupadi as the lead character, however it raises awareness about the global issues that the world is facing at present.”

Talking about her approach, she says, “I believe in strong grammar, but I find it interesting to deconstruct and reconstruct to showcase the highest energy that I can generate on stage. My approach is abstract for me to define.”

When asked about her training in Veena and Carnatic music, she states, “The knowledge of Raagas and notes help me tremendously in imagining and creating a visual piece through my dance. Every dancer must learn at least the basics of music and singing to be a better artist.”

“Rasaanubhava - the art experience” was an Indian classical dance production that featured renowned dance exponent, researcher and choreographer from India, Dr. Padmaja Suresh.

The evening showcased students of the Sindhubhairavi Centre for Indian Arts and Culture. The students presented a beautiful composition in praise of the deity Ganapati, followed by hand gestures and the five patterns of rhythm known as Pancha nade. Chandana Brijesh, a senior disciple of Dr. Padmaja Suresh, presented Guru Vandana. The vocal and veena support was by Smt. Uthra Vijay and Sri. Seshadri Varadarajan.

The hallmark of the evening was the captivating performance of Dr. Padmaja who enthralled the audience with her presentation of a ‘Varna’ in praise of Lord Venkateshwara and the Ardhanaareshwara Ashtakam.

Another highlight of her trip was a thought-provoking session on “Yantra Mantra and Tantra: Decoding Natya”. This session was very enlightening for not just Bharatanatyam but any Indian classical art lover. Speaking about the value of Bharata Muni’s Natya Shastra, Abhinav Gupta’s Tantraloka and the sacred texts of Vedas, Dr. Padmaja explained the spiritual roots in all Indian classical art forms.

She added that, “As dancers we need to understand that we should remember the Mahavakyas or the great sayings such as ‘Aham Brahmasmi’ or ‘Tatvamasi’ to reach the highest chakkras, where dancer and dance are not distinct.” She concluded, “Art is timeless and spaceless, it is beyond each one of us and as dancers we must remember that.”

The stage was opened by little kids offering petals of love to the Gurus present at the occasion and the greatest Gurus of all time, Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwara. Consul General of India Mr. Raj Kumar educated everyone with the importance of art and culture and the current issues faced by the Indian diaspora in Melbourne. Sanchita Abrol in her thought-provoking address mentioned the value of uniqueness in the form of art and culture. She stated that the colours of culture form the source of identity of each person and how imparting of such art and culture requires reimagination by each successive generation, without reinventing the art or the culture itself.

The first performance was a Krishan Bhajan based on the famous poetry of Soordaas “Re man Krishan naam kahi lije”, depicting the period of temple dancing. Continuing on, Abhyas repertory presented Darbari and Tarana depicting

the influence of Persian culture in Kathak.

After this, Krishan Mohan Maharaj, who is the 7th generation in a family of great Kathak exponents presented a Ghazal.

Written by him, this piece encapsulated the intersection between love and pain.

As a ‘Kathakar’ or a storyteller, Sanchita Abrol shared the story of Yashodhara, the wife of Prince Siddhartha or Lord Buddha.

Bringing alive the feelings of Yashodhara while emphasizing on the ‘Abhinaya ang’ of Kathak, graceful movements and delicate expressions combined with the epic poetry by Maithili Sharan Gupt transported the audience to another world. Her agility could be seen in the following ‘Nritya ang’ with a crescendo into scintillating footwork and pirouettes.

Abhyas repertory then presented another lyrical piece in Kathak and ended the show on a high note with “Ullaas”, a composition based on the very famous Sufiyana Kalam “Ae Re Sakhi Piya Ghar Aaye” by the great Amir Khusro: “O friend, my Beloved has returned home.”

The choreography combined classical and modern styles and depicted the movements of joy and love cherished by two lovers and their worship for God. Artists in Abhyas group included: Minu Garu, Heena Wasen, Parinita khanna, Shubhi Mishra, Jaya Pathak and Nidhi Bhardwaj.

The World Tunes into Indian Classical music Ayaan Ali Bangash, the son of legendary sarod maestro Amjad Ali Khan, takes out time for a quick tete-a-tete during his recent tour of the United States to talk about music, social media and new collaborations.

Y

ou just collaborated with Eagles, how did that come about?

Five years ago, Joe Walsh from the band was visiting Mumbai and we were invited by a common family friend to meet him. So my entire family flew down from Kolkata to meet him, and we gifted him a sarod, which he was very keen on having. My brother was in correspondence with Joe’s team for a track, which we were supposed to record together while in LA. Call it destiny, but our sarods were never delivered by the airline company from Vancouver to LA. So all we had to record with was the sarod that we had gifted him. If we hadn’t met him five years ago we would have never recorded that album. So it was solo performances with them and one track became three and before we knew it we had recorded 11 tracks in all, one after the other. And then Joe introduced us to Ringo Starr from the Beatles and it was just fabulous.

What did you learn from that experience?

A lot. The humility and the way they are as people... so down to earth, I cannot imagine a celebrity from India being so humble and nice.

Other than classical musical festivals, you are also playing in world music festivals?

How is the audience connect at these events?

Obviously, it’s different. When you play Indian classical music, you are confined.

You have to restrict yourself to be within the box. There are certain norms that

medium does not have words. You cannot manipulate the sound of music, but you can manipulate words. India is known for its history, art and culture, but communal and religious differences are unbecoming of such a historically and culturally rich nation. Just like the iPhone has an update to change with times, so should various religions update the interpretations of their texts to deal with the times we live in.

Musicians and artistes are ambassadors who bridge cultures and divides, but cultures must also keep updating themselves.

you have to follow, you can’t cross the boundary. When you play at world music festivals like Adelaide Music Festival or Woodstock etc, it’s not just about music, the audience connects with you as a person. They accept you or they don’t, it’s not how good or bad you play,they accept you for how you sound and feel.

Then they connect with you. It’s about

high energy, the same music has to be presented in a different way.

Should nationalism flow into art and culture and promote that instead or religion?

Music has its own language, which is not connected to words. Religion is connected to words. There won’t be conflict if a

What in your mind are the qualities of an influencer?

I think there should be a balance between what I do and what I post. So if I post a picture of me maybe eating in Moti Mahal or Sagar, it’s well within the reach of all of my followers. But when there are posts about may be luxury brands, I have to focus on how I present it, so that I am inspiring someone. Influence has to be a positive, so people look at your posts and feel good, not excluded. If I take a picture in the gym, I want musicians to be inspired and turn to fitness because being fit is as important as playing an instrument. Work hard, eat healthy, workout, take care of yourself, enjoy life, respect your family, help and be kind to people. That is the way to influence to people.

Sugar daddy relations much more than just sex & money

urns out being ‘sugar daddy’ is not just about sex and money, while occasionally it may live up to the stereotype of a wealthy, middle-aged man lavishing gifts and money on a younger woman in return for her companionship, there is more to it, a new study suggests.

Bad breakups may not trigger weight gain

Probably the most famous sugar daddy of all time is Hugh Hefner, the man who founded Playboy magazine. In recent times Sahil Khan, Dan Bilzerian have been in limelight.

Have their sugar relationships been based on companionship, intimacy or other forms of attention in exchange for personal benefit?

“Whenever I read an article about Sugar Daddies or Sugar Babies, I often saw the same sensationalistic slant: the women are desperate, starved college students engaging in prostitution,” said author Maren Scull, Assistant Professor at the University of Colorado in the US. “As someone who studies deviance, I knew there were more important nuances to these relationships,” Scull said.

The study, published in the journal Sociological Perspectives, interviewed 48 current and former US sugar babies and identified seven types of “sugar” relationships such as sugar prostitution, compensated dating, compensated companionship, sugar dating, sugar friendships, sugar friendships with benefits and pragmatic love.

She explored the kind of activities the women were involved in, whether sex was involved and whether their lives were intertwined with their benefactors.

She found that 40 per cent of the women never had sex with their benefactors and the ones who did, often had genuine, authentic connections with the men.

She also found that most forms of sugaring were not a play-for-pay arrangement.

Scull labelled the first “sugar prostitution”, a form of sugaring sans emotion and purely the exchange of gifts for sex.

“Compensated dating”, popular in Asia, involves a monetary or material compensation for grabbing a coffee, a meal or attending a specific event together.

“Compensated companionship” involves wider scope of activities and often involve the woman becoming more intertwined in the man’s life.

Neither compensated dating nor compensat-

ed companionship involves anything sexual for most people.

“Sugar dating”, the most common form of sugaring, combines the intertwined life of companionship with sex. In this case, most women receive an allowance on a weekly, monthly or as-needed basis.

The sums could range from $200 to several thousands of dollars a month.

“Sugar friendships” are a mutually beneficial relationships with someone the women consider a friend.

Finally, Scull found that some of these relationships involved two people who hoped to end up together, with the woman taken care of for the rest of her life, in a category she named ‘pragmatic love’.

hat pint of ice cream after a nasty breakup may not do as much damage as you think. Despite the emotional turmoil, people on average do not report gaining weight after a relationship dissolution, says a new study.

According to the researchers, it has been well documented that people sometimes use food as a way to cope with negative feelings and that emotional eating can lead to unhealthy food choices. “...our research showed that while it’s possible people may drown their sorrows in ice cream for a day or two, modern humans do not tend to gain weight after a breakup,” said study author Marissa Harrison, Associate Professor at Penn State University in the US. Breakups can be stressful and emotional, it could potentially trigger emotional eating.

“Food was much scarcer in the ancestral environment, so if your partner abandoned you, it could have made gathering food much harder,” Harrison added.

For the study, published in the Journal of the Evolutionary Studies Consortium, the researchers completed two studies to test the theory that people may be more likely to gain weight after a relationship breakup.

In the first one, the researchers recruited 581 people to complete an online survey about whether they had recently gone through a breakup and whether they gained or lost weight within a year of the breakup.

Most of the participants -- 62.7 per cent -reported no weight change.

For the second study, the researchers recruited 261 new participants to take a different, more extensive survey than the one used in the first study.

“The online space in India has never been more vibrant. India has become the fastest Internet consuming country in the world and Internet has now become the bridge to the country’s aspirations.

The new survey asked whether participants had ever experienced the dissolution of a long-term relationship, and whether they gained or lost weight as a result.

“As highlighted in the report, the growing influence of online videos, increase in usage of language and voice, along with a rise of ML and AI are opportunities for brands and marketers,” Vikas Agnihotri, Country Director, Google India, said.

The survey also asked about participants’ attitudes toward their ex-partner, how committed the relationship was, who initiated the breakup, whether the participants tended to eat emotionally, and how much participants enjoy food in general.

Indian language Internet users are expected to account for nearly 75 per cent of the total user base by 2021 and Google search trends show a significant move in this direction.

While all participants reported experiencing a break up at some point in their lives, the majority of participants -- 65.13 per cent -reported no change in weight after relationship dissolution.

n a bid to rest the debate on what comes first -- smartphone addiction or depression -- a new study has found that young people who are hooked on to their smartphones may be at an increased risk of depression and loneliness.

survey revealed that job security, followed by a healthy work-life balance, drives Indian youth to opt for banking and government jobs.

Based on the responses from 5000 banking and government jobs aspirants across the country, the survey from the online competitive exam preparation space -- Olive board found that 44.3 per cent respondents voted for job stability, while 36.7 per cent chose better work-life balance over other popular considerations, such as good salary (11.1 per cent).

79 per cent of the survey respondents were from tier 2 and tier 3 cities, the study revealed.

“When we speak of the aspirations of Indian youth, it is important to look beyond the mega cities, teeming with MNCs and start-ups. The majority of Indians live in small towns and villages, where public sector jobs are most sought after,” said Abhishek Patil, CEO and Co-founder, Olive board.

“Our survey sheds light on the dreams and motivations of this oft-ignored section of society,” Patil said.

According to the survey, 23 per cent of the respondents opted for a mock test in Hindi instead of English.

In terms of preferred mode for exam preparation, 58.7 per cent voted for online mock tests, while YouTube classes and videos (44.5 per cent) came second, and traditional coaching institutes (8.4per cent) were the last choice.

A majority of the candidates (39.4 per cent) prepare for three or more competitive exams at the same time, the study said.

The survey also found that access to online coaching for competitive exams, such as JEE, NEET, Banking, SSC and GATE, has gained greater momentum.

Online learning and personalised education tools are replacing traditional coaching methods.

Social media is definitely a game-changer, offering easy access to discussion forums and study groups.

A growing body of research has identified a link between smartphone dependency and symptoms of depression and loneliness.

However, it’s been unclear whether reliance on smartphones precedes those symptoms, or whether the reverse is true -- that depressed or lonely people are more likely to become dependent on their phones.

In a study of 346 participants, ages 1820, researcher Matthew Lapierre and his collaborators from University of Arizona found that smartphone dependency predicts higher reports of depressive symptoms and loneliness, rather than the other way around.

“The main takeaway is that smartphone dependency directly predicts later depressive symptoms,” said Lapierre, assistant professor in the department of communication.

“There’s an issue where people are entirely too reliant on the device, in terms of feeling anxious if they don’t have it accessible, and they’re using it to the detriment of their day-to-day life.”

In the study, which will be published in the Journal of Adolescent Health, Lapierre and his co-authors focus on smartphone dependency rather than on general smartphone use, which can actually provide benefits.

Understanding the direction of the relationship between smartphone depend-

ency and poor psychological outcomes is critical for knowing how best to address the problem, said Pengfei Zhao who co-authored the study.

“If depression and loneliness lead to smartphone dependency, we could reduce dependency by adjusting people’s mental health,” Zhao said.

“But if smartphone dependency (precedes depression and loneliness), which is what we found, we can reduce smartphone dependency to maintain or improve wellbeing.”

The researchers measured smartphone dependency by asking study participants to use a four-point scale to rate a series of statements, such as “I panic when I cannot use my smartphone.”

The study focused on older adolescents, a population researchers say is important because they largely grew up with smartphones and they are at an age and transitional stage in life where they are vulnerable to poor mental health outcomes, such as depression.

“It might be easier for late adolescents to become dependent on smartphones, and smartphones may have a bigger negative influence on them because they are already very vulnerable to depression or loneliness,” Zhao noted.

When people feel stressed, they should use other healthy approaches to cope, like talking to a close friend to get support or doing some exercises or meditation, the researchers suggested.

1 in 4 Indians will ditch air travel for greener options

nly one in four Indians are willing to take a lower carbon footprint alternative to air travel, even at the cost of inconvenience and additional expense, according to a new World Economic Forum study.

About 37 per cent Indians on the other hand would take the transport with a lower carbon footprint - railways, for example -- if it is at par with air travel, both in convenience and price, showed the findings of the survey.

While 24 per cent Indians said they were undecided, 17 per cent refused to choose their mode of transportation, basis the carbon footprint.

These were some of the findings of the 27-country survey conducted for the World Economic Forum by market research firm Ipsos. For this survey, Ipsos interviewed a total of 19,023 adults between June 21 and July 5 this year.

“Interestingly, if we see, for long distance travel, there is no alternative to air travel, unless we consciously look for using videocon, webinar etc. especially for business meetings,” Rinku Patnaik, Chief Client Officer, Ipsos India, said.

“Air travellers probably can also on their part make an informed decision, if we at a country level have some sort of an ‘eco-labelling’ of the carrier; and passengers can act responsible by choosing accordingly,” Patnaik said.

esearchers have found that drinking coffee is associated with improving sports performance in both men and women.

For the study, published in the journal Nutrients, the researchers from Coventry University in the UK picked 38 participants (19 men, 19 women) and found that drinking caffeinated coffee improves speed of cycling.

According to the researchers, participants restricted coffee consumption for 12 hours before drinking either -- coffee providing (3mg.kg minus one) of caffeine, a placebo in water or nothing as a control.

In a 5 km cycling time trial, following coffee ingestion, the performance of both men and women improved by approximately nine

seconds and six seconds as compared with placebo and control, respectively.

No difference in performance was observed between the placebo and control.

The study’s findings suggest that both men and women respond similarly to coffee and that its ingestion may be a practical source of caffeine prior to exercise for improving performance.

The finding also contributes to the growing body of research that highlights the ergogenic benefit of coffee ingestion.

To date, much of the research on this topic has focused only on anhydrous caffeine and men, said the researchers.

Humble tomato a day can boost your virility

omatoes might cost you dearly in India nowadays but adding one or two in your daily diet could keep your virility up and running, according to researchers.

A dietary compound called LactoLycopene found in tomatoes has been shown to improve sperm quality and those took this supplement had almost 40 per cent more fast swimming sperm with improvements to sperm size and shape.

“We didn’t really expect that at the end of the study, there would be any difference in the sperm from men who took the tablet versus those who took the placebo.

When we decoded the results, I nearly fell off my chair,” said Allan Pacey, Professor of Andrology Reproduction and Head of the University of Sheffield’s Department of Oncology and Metabolism.

The discovery could transform the outlook for men with fertility problems as sperm quality could be improved with a simple diet supplement containing LactoLycopene found in cooked tomatoes.

The 12-week trial designed by Liz Williams, a leading specialist in human nutrition at the University of Sheffield, involved 60 healthy volunteers aged 19-30.

Half took LactoLycopene supplements and the other half took an identical placebo (dummy pills) every day for 12 weeks.

The team discovered that it is possible to increase the proportion of healthy shaped sperm (sperm morphology) and boost ‘fast swimming’ sperm by around 40 per cent. Lycopene can be found in some fruits and vegetables, but the main source in the diet is from tomatoes.

Lycopene is a pigment that gives tomatoes their red colour, but the dietary Lycopene is poorly absorbed by the human body, so the compound used for the trial was a commercially available formulation called LactoLycopene; designed by FutureYou Cambridge to improve bioavailability.

“The improvement in morphology, the size and shape of the sperm, was dramatic. This was the first properly designed and controlled study of the effect of LactoLycopene on semen quality, and it has spurred us to want to do more work with this molecule,” explained Pacey.

“We were surprised by the improvement in sperm quality shown by the results,” added Williams in a paper published in the European Journal of Nutrition.

The next step for researchers is to repeat the exercise in men with fertility problems and see if LactoLycopene can increase sperm quality for those men and whether it helps couples conceive and avoid invasive fertility treatments.

While resistance exercise is known to preserve muscle function, there is growing evidence that adequate vitamin D status may also be protective.

egular exercise is highly beneficial for all patients with cardiovascular disease regardless of age, a new study has said, adding that patients who benefited most from cardiac rehabilitation were those who started out with the greatest physical impairment.

Ageing is associated with several factors such as increased inflammation or oxidative stress that predispose people to cardiovascular diseases.

“As a result, elderly patients are usually less fit than their younger counterparts, and deconditioning is accelerated once cardiovascular disease is established,” explained lead investigator Gaelle Deley from University of Burgundy Franche-Comt in France.

However, there is few data available about the impact of patient age on the physical and psychological effectiveness of cardiac rehabilitation, said the study published in the Canadian Journal of Cardiology.

In the new study, investigators examined 733 patients who completed a 25-session cardiac

rehabilitation programme.

Following the intervention, all patients experienced improvements.

“We found a few weeks of exercise training not only significantly improved exercise capacity, but also decreased anxiety and depression. Patients with the greatest physical impairments at baseline benefited the most from exercise,” said Dr Deley.

Another interesting result was that patients younger than 65 who were very anxious before rehabilitation benefited the most from exercise training.

A similar result was found for depressed patients older than 65.

The restaurant -- which is housed in a refurbished “haveli” with the Qutub Minar in its vicinity -- has simple interiors, an 11-course tasting menu and an a la carte menu which comprises some dishes which are fancy when it comes to presentation, but are a modern take of our very own Indian traditional food.

ROOH - a fine dining restaurant -- is a hidden gem located amid the lush green landscape of Mehrauli and is all about “progressive Indian food”. Chef Sujan Sarkar, who opened the brand’s first outlet in San Franciso three years back, has now brought it to Delhi with an idea to present Indian flavours with an international approach.

“The food at Rooh Delhi is not fusion, but we call it progressive Indian or international Indian cuisine. Here, it is more about story - it has influences of my travel. I have stayed in many places like Dubai, in Indian cities like Kolkata, Mumbai, Delhi and Goa. So, you will see influences of all these places in the menu,” says the New-York based chef.

Sarkar says that people all over the world are very fond of Indian food and 60 per cent of his clientele comprise nonIndians. “Within three years, I opened three restaurants and planning two more this year, which makes it five in the US.

“When you close your eyes and eat it, it’s Indian, but when you see it, it is different.

A lot of thought process was there behind this. A lot of different kinds of ingredients and international ingredients are used at Rooh.

You see a lot of international influences in the food, but it is not fusion food� There is no use of soy sauce etc. We are taking Indian food forward,” he said.

The tasting menu of the restaurant has 11 offerings and are paired with wines sourced from across the globe like Portugal, Japan and Bhutan.

“Pani puri” -- a modern take to the “gol gappa” or the “puchka” - is a concoction of flavours. Ditching the conventional mint water, the chef has chosen passion fruit and tamarind jelly over a tart that blasts in the mouth leaving you with a smile.

“Yogurt chaat”, which is served in a stone bowl, has sweet and sour taste and different textures, made with yoghurt and layers of cranberry, gongura, jalapenos, crispy potatoes and togarashi, topped with dry ice.

Another surprise is “avocado bhel’ -- the chef’s recommendation.

Crispy quinoa, topped with a mixture of avocado, fresh corn, pickled onion, mango sorbet and little balls of tender coconut.

“Kappa shami” is shami kebab, served with three different sauces -- spiced apricot, mango and mint -- and edible, activated charcoal biscuit.

Desserts are definitely the highlight of the menu. There’s “mango yolk” -- a vegetarian dish made with mango puree with an appearance of a raw egg

“Besan burfi” is a must try -- chocolate and besan cake served with a besanflavoured ice-cream.

Rooh Delhi has a unique cocktail and mocktail menu based on the six different tastes of the Ayurveda -- sweet, salty, pungent, bitter, sour and astringent however, these are not Ayurvedic drinks, clarifies Sarkar.

He has also introduced natural alcohols which are essentially fermented ingredients, ranging from applecinnamon, coconut water and blackberry.

Place the arugula on the plate so as to form a bed for the salad, lightly toss the remaining ingredients with vinaigrette, check for seasoning and place on a bed of arugula. Garnish with micro greens and serve.

Ingredients:

• Wheat flour: 200 grams (1 cup) • Bananas: 100 gms • Jaggery: 80 grams (less than 1/2 cup) • Fennel seed : 1 tsp • Milk/Wate: 1 cup • Oil or Ghee to fry.

Method:

Filter flour in a utensil using a strainer. Put jaggery in milk/ water and dissolve it, sift flour in this sweet milk/water and add mashed ripened bananas. The mixture for fritters has to be thick. Cover the mix and keep in cool dry place overnight allowing the flour to ferment. Now whisk this mix properly. Add Fennel seeds. Pour oil in a pan and heat.

When oil is sufficiently heated then take little amounts of mixture at a time and put it in hot oil and fry till golden brown. Enjoy with tea

Method:

Soak barley overnight and cook next morning till soft but not mushy, strain and refrigerate. Set baby beats to soft stage and, cool and cut into thin slices. Bring water to boil add salt and Quinoa turn off the heat cover with lid and leave for 20 mins, strain and chill. Toss quinoa, sliced apple, diced beets and barley lightly with vinaigrette and arrange on a plate. Dice the gorgonzola cheese and arrange on top of salad. Sprinkle moringa powder and garnish with microgreens or cilantro.

Masala Atlantic Salmon SALMON has been discovered to be the healthiest type of fish one can eat. All fish have fats called Omega-3s, but salmon is one of the richest sources of Omega-3s, it is also a good source of lean protein and a great boost of good cholesterol.

This recipe is a fusion style easily prepared using boneless Salmon fillet cooked with home style mix masala (Indian Spices) and lemon juice, then served with Asian Greens.

INGREDIENTS

500 g Salmon fillet sliced 3-4 tbsp olive oil 2 tbsp lemon juice 1/4 tsp chilli powder 1/4 tsp coriander 1/4 tsp cumin powder 1 Pinch cumin seeds Salt & coarse black pepper to taste Sprigs of coriander or parsley

Serves 2 METHOD

Marinate the salmon pieces with all the spices and lemon juice. Set aside covered in the fridge for about an hour.

Gently place the salmon pieces skin side down into a heated non-stick pan. Pan Fry on med heat till it turns a lovely golden shade in colour. I like mine well done so it darker in colour

and also well cooked in the middle.

After 4-5 mins turn over to cook the other side till golden brown.

SERVE:

Hot with stir fried Asian greens and basmati rice on the side if desired. Those who like it hot try a dash of Tabasco on the Salmon. I like mine hot with Asian green or a garden salad along with a lemon/lime drink.
