Building better, safer schools across Victoria

MELBOURNE, Sep 1: The Victorian Government will deliver vital maintenance and safety works at more than 400 schools to support jobs and local businesses through the coronavirus pandemic and improve facilities for students and staff across Victoria.

Minister for Education James Merlino today announced hundreds of schools will share in more than $15.3 million through the 2020-21 Bushfire Preparedness (Vegetation) Program and Planned Maintenance Program.

The Bushfire Preparedness funding will see 346 schools share in more than $9 million to clear vegetation and undertake

other essential maintenance ahead of the upcoming bushfire season.

109 schools will share in $6.3 million of Planned Maintenance Program funding for essential work to grounds and classrooms such as fixing roofs and windows, painting, resurfacing floors and replacing windows, as well as repairing landscaping like pathways and steps.

Over $2 million of this will go towards maintenance to Shelter-in-Place buildings at 12 schools, which provide temporary accommodation to staff and students in the case of a bushfire.

Works with contractors will be carried out under COVID-19 advice guidelines to

ensure the health and safety of staff and students.

If works can’t start immediately due to Stage 4 restrictions, offsite planning of these works and any that are essential for school safety will continue.

The Government is investing an unprecedented $7.2 billion in Victorian school infrastructure, which is delivering more than 1,460 school upgrades and 100 new schools by 2026 – ensuring every child can access a great local school where they can achieve their best.

VAD laws giving more Victorians choice over their death

MELBOURNE, Sep 1: Just over one year since its implementation, our voluntary assisted dying laws are giving Victorians suffering with a terminal illness greater choice over the timing and manner of their death.

Minister for Health Jenny Mikakos welcomed the third report of the independent Voluntary Assisted Dying Review Board, led by former Supreme Court Justice Betty King QC, which was tabled in Parliament today.

The latest report shows that of the 231 permits issued, 124 Victorians suffering with a terminal illness had accessed the laws in the last 12 months, affording them compassionate care at the end of their life.

The report also shows the widespread need for the legislation, with 38 per cent of applications from people living in regional Victoria. Similarly, applications were received from Victorians across a spectrum of ages – from 32 to 100 – with an average age of 71 years.

Of those who have died, 78 per cent had a cancer diagnosis, 15 per cent had a neurodegenerative disease like motor neurone disease (MND), and

seven per cent had other untreatable diseases including pulmonary fibrosis, cardiomyopathy or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

And reflecting the rapid decline of people experiencing many of these illnesses, half of all applicants proceeded from their first to last request within 19 days. Most permits were then issued within two days.

The number of medical practitioners trained and registered to support voluntary assisted dying increased by 30 per cent from the first six months, with 37 per cent located outside metropolitan Melbourne.

The report shows that one application was deemed non-compliant. Although the applicant was fully eligible to access the scheme – and demonstrating the strict level of oversight – the Board’s review

process identified an administrative error with the paperwork completed by a medical practitioner.

Ensuring we continue to protect patients and their families; the matter has been referred to the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency for review and any follow-up action.

The independent Board has also used the review to repeat its calls to reform Commonwealth laws that effectively prevent telehealth being used to discuss voluntary assisted dying.

This has proven to be a barrier for accessing voluntary assisted dying, particularly for regional patients or those too ill to attend an appointment in person.

The coronavirus pandemic has further highlighted these access issues, prompting the Board to again call for change to the Commonwealth law.

Further certainty for Victorian tenants and landlords

MELBOURNE, Sep 4: With a home more important than ever, the Victorian Government is ensuring greater certainty and security for residential tenants and landlords by extending the eviction moratorium until 28 March 2021.

Under legislation introduced to Parliament this week, evictions will continue to be banned for residential tenancies, except in certain circumstances, until that date. Rental increases would continue to be banned for the same period.

The further extension will give tenants security in knowing that even if they are struggling to meet their rent due to the coronavirus pandemic, they won’t lose the roof over the head.

Tenants and landlords are encouraged to continue working together in good faith to resolve any tenancy issue they may be facing. Demonstrating the ongoing partnership between tenants and landlords, roughly 32,000 agreements for reduced rent are now registered with Consumer Affairs Victoria (CAV).

Residential tenants and landlords who struggle to strike a deal over rent reductions are able to access the dispute resolution service run by CAV – which has provided advice and dispute resolution services more than 93,000 times since it launched in April.

Rental relief grants – which were recently increased from $2,000 to $3,000 – will also be extended until 28 March, giving tenants and their landlords more certainty as we continue to battle coronavirus.

Eligibility for the grant will also be expanded, with the assets threshold increasing from $5,000 to $10,000 – ensuring tenants aren’t being asked to draw down on their savings before accessing support.

Eligible residential landlords will also receive a 25 per cent reduction in their 2021 land tax bill, with the remainder able to be deferred until 30 November 2021 – including any deferred land tax from 2020.

These changes come on top of the recently announced $600,000 package to help advocacy groups and agencies can provide stronger support for vulnerable tenants as we continue to fight this virus.

The funding will allow Tenants Victoria, Victorian Council of Social Service, Financial Counselling Victoria and Registered

Accommodation Association Victoria to provide more training and resources to help tenancy and community sector workers support vulnerable tenants in resolving disputes with their landlords.

It will also allow ensure information about the Government’s residential tenancies dispute resolution scheme is reaching people from culturally and linguistically diverse communities, along with direct client support.

Building a more inclusive creative state

MELBOURNE, Aug 28: The Victorian Government is backing ten of Victoria’s celebrated creative organisations to become more inclusive, building a fairer and stronger creative sector for all Victorians.

Minister for Creative Industries Martin Foley today announced this year’s participants in the Fair Play initiative, designed to improve access and representation in the arts, across employment, leadership and public participation.

Participating organisations include Arena Theatre in Bendigo, Malthouse Theatre, children’s theatre-makers Polyglot, dance company Chunky Move, and Victoria’s peak body for Aboriginal music Song lines.

Museums Victoria, Geelong Art Gallery and Heide Museum of Modern Art are also taking part, as are two of the state’s most popular festivals Melbourne Fringe and Melbourne Writers’ Festival.

The six-month program, delivered by Diversity Arts Australia (DARTS), will be led by creative practitioner mentors who have lived experience and connections to the communities.

The program focuses on, drawing from

first-hand experience to help organisations meet their equity goals through tailored mentoring, training and support.

Mentors will work closely with the organisations to identify areas for improvement and develop strategies for greater engagement, employment of, and leadership from First Peoples, culturally and linguistically diverse groups, and deaf and disabled Victorians.

The program has been developed with training partners including Koorie Heritage Trust, Arts Access Victoria, Boon Wurrung Foundation and Wurundjeri Tribal Council.

To extend the impact of the program beyond the participating organisations, videos and other resources will be shared via the Creative Equity Toolkit, a free online resource supported by Creative Victoria.

Fair Play was introduced in 2019 to ensure arts organisations that receive government funding better reflect and serve the diversity of the Victorian community, and participating organisations reported a raft of positive inclusion outcomes.

Nominations open Multicultural awards to recognise extraordinary soon for Victorian local council elections Victorians

MELBOURNE, Aug 31: The Victorian Government is gearing up to honour people and organisations that have strengthened the state’s multiculturalism.

Minister for Multicultural Affairs Ros Spence today opened nominations for the Victorian Multicultural Awards for Excellence, which pay tribute to champions of diversity and others who have supported Victorians from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

The annual awards will look different in 2020 – not just due to the pandemic – but also because they will feature seven new categories reflecting the many fields in which diversity is being embraced.

It includes the Community Response and Recovery category to honour the remarkable efforts of those who have assisted during the coronavirus pandemic and the bushfires of early 2020.

Victorians can be nominated for either paid or voluntary work across another 14 categories,

including the Premier’s Award for Community Harmony, Youth Leadership Media, Refugee Advocacy, Police, Business, Community Innovation and Health.

Award recipients will be honoured during an online ceremony hosted by the Victorian Multicultural Commission later in the year.

The Victorian Multicultural Awards were first held 19 years ago, recognising the state’s strong diverse history and many Victorians that contribute to it.

Australia officially enters Australia’s carbon recession, first time in emissions fall nearly 30 years to 22-year low

CANBERRA, Sep 2: Australia has officially entered its first recession after nearly 30 years, with the June quarter GDP numbers showing the economy went backwards by 7 per cent, the worst fall on record, official figures revealed on Wednesday.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), the latest figure follows a fall of 0.3 per cent in the March quarter this year.

The record fall was driven by the private sector, much of which was shut down or restricted due to efforts to contain the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

Michael Smedes, Head of National Accounts at the ABS, attributed the quarterly fall to the “global pandemic and associated containment policies”.

“This is, by a wide margin, the largest fall in quarterly GDP since records began in 1959,” he said.

The 7 per cent quarterly GDP slump was also more than three times worse than the previous biggest fall of 2 per cent in June 1974.

Report from the ABS also showed that

due to increased number of recipients and additional support payments, social assistance benefits in cash rose to a record 41.6 per cent.

Spending on services dropped 17.6 per cent after decrease in transport services, operation of vehicles and hotels, cafes and restaurants.

“The June quarter saw a significant contraction in household spending on services as households altered their behaviour and restrictions were put in place to contain the spread of the coronavirus,” said Smedes.

The impact of the Covid-19 recession was also felt differently across the states, a report by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation said.

“New South Wales and Victoria saw the sharpest declines, with State Final Demand falling 8.6 per cent and 8.5 per cent respectively,” the report quoted Sarah Hunter from BIS Oxford Economics as saying.

“Tasmania was also relatively hard hit, as the loss of international tourists and, to a lesser extent, students weighed on spending.”

CANBERRA, Aug 31: Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions have fallen to a 22-year low as a result of Covid-19 restrictions, the government revealed in a new update.

According to the National Greenhouse Gas Inventory update released by the government, emissions of greenhouse gases in Australia are estimated to be 518 million tonnes in the 2019-20 financial year.

It is Australia’s lowest emissions output since 1998.

The biggest fall came between April and June, the height of the Covid-19 pandemic in Australia, when emissions were 10 million tonnes lower than in the same period in 2019.

The biggest drops in emissions were in the transport sector.

Aviation fuel consumption was down 79 per cent and petrol consumption down 26.7 per cent.

Angus Taylor, minister for Energy and Emissions Reduction, said that the unsustainable Covid-19 restrictions on travel “substantially reduced emissions”.

“With the impacts of Covid-19 restrictions being felt across the economy, emissions have reduced as expected,” he said in a statement.

Emissions from electricity fell 4.2 per cent as a result of an increased usage of renewable sources of energy.

Agriculture emissions were down 5.5 per cent largely due to the drought’s impact on livestock populations.

The data also confirmed that Australia’s emissions in the year to March were 14.3 per cent below 2005 levels.

The Australian government has committed to reducing emissions by 26 per cent to 28 per cent from 2005 levels by 2030 under the Paris climate agreement.

‘Australia facing more frequent, intense natural disasters’

CANBERRA, Sep 1: A landmark inquiry into devastating 2019-20 Australian bushfires has warned that the nation was facing frequent and more intense natural disasters.

The Royal Commission into National Natural Disaster Arrangement, which was established in response to the “Black Summer” bushfires, published its interim report on Monday, warning of “cascading, concurrent and compounding” natural disasters.

“Over the coming decades, Australia is likely to experience more frequent and intense natural disasters,” the report said.

It found that the national bushfire warning system, which was put in place in 2009, was not used consistently around the country and used potentially confusing terms like “watch and act”.

It identified a new national fire danger rating system, which has been in development since 2016, as a “matter of priority” to respond to the growing threat.

“For such a critical issue, this work has taken too long and is an example of the need for a clear decision-making process and to elevate matters to national leaders where required,” the report said.

“The work on the Australian warning system

should be finished as a priority.”

The commission heard evidence in May that the smoke from the Black Summer bushfires was responsible for estimated nearly 450 deaths and affected 80 per cent of the population.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison established the inquiry in February, saying it would be “focused on practical action that has a direct link to making Australians safer”.

Emergency Management Minister David Littleproud agreed that Australia needed better national coordination of emergency responses.

“What the report says is what we’ve dealt with isn’t unprecedented, it means it’s what we’re going to have to deal with into the future,” he told reporters.

“What it’s telling us is there needs to be a more nationally coordinated approach.”

India asks ‘40 Under 40’ global list China to show sincerity in restoring peace on LAC

NEW DELHI, Sep 3: The twin children of billionaire Mukesh Ambani, Akash and Isha, have made it to the Fortune’s latest ‘40 Under 40’ list of influential people around the world.

The Ambani scions, who will celebrate their 29th birthday next month, feature in the technology section of the list where they have got company from India’s leading edtech startup Byju’s founder Byju Raveendran and Xiaomi India Managing Director Manu Kumar Jain, among others.

“Akash and Isha Ambani are the twin children of Reliance’s Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh Ambani, who happens, not coincidentally, to be India’s rewind, Asia’s richest man,” Fortune said.

“Reliance is a family business. Akash joined the company in 2014 after receiving an economics degree from Brown University. Isha joined a year later, following stints at Yale, Stanford and McKinsey,” it added.

Fortune credited Akash and Isha

for helping seal the company’s recent megadeal with Facebook and for major follow-on investments from tech giants like Google, Qualcomm, and Intel.

“Recently, Akash and Isha helped launch Jio Mart, a venture that aims to challenge Amazon and Walmart’s Flipkart for command of India’s massive and fastgrowing online shopping market,” Fortune said, adding that even heirs have to earn their keep.

Byju’s CEO Raveendran, 39, made it to the list for showing that it is possible to build a massively successful online education company.

Since its founding in 2011, Byju’s, which has emerged as the biggest education technology company in the country, is now worth more than $10 billion.

The US based publication’s list this year includes 40 influential people under 40 years of age in five categories -- finance, technology, healthcare, government and politics, and media and entertainment.

Another prominent Indian who has made it to the list (in the healthcare segment) is Adar Poonawalla, the CEO of Punebased Serum Institute of India (SII), which is working towards introducing Covid-19 vaccines from AstraZeneca and Novavax in India.

“Few people on the planet are more in demand right now than Poonawalla,” Fortune said.

Founded more than a half-century ago by Poonawalla’s father, SII happens to be the world’s largest manufacturer of vaccines.

NEW DELHI, Sep 3: India asked China to show sincerity in expeditiously restoring peace along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and border areas through complete disengagement and de-escalation in accordance with the bilateral agreements and protocols.

The two countries have remained locked in a stand-off along the LAC in Ladakh since June this year. A fresh crisis erupted last Sunday when India pre-emptively thwarted Chinese intentions to unilaterally change the status quo on the southern bank of Pangong Tso in Eastern Ladakh.

In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Anurag Srivastava said that the government’s position on the recent development has been clearly articulated in a statement made on September 1.

The Indian Defence Ministry had said that People’s Liberation Army (PLA) troops violated the previous consensus arrived at the military and diplomatic engagements during the ongoing standoff in Eastern Ladakh and carried out provocative military movements to change the status quo on the night of August 29 and early morning of August 30.

“Indian troops pre-empted this PLA activity on the southern bank of Pangon Tso Lake, undertook measures to strengthen our positions and thwart Chinese intentions to unilaterally change facts on the ground,” the government had said.

Srivastava reiterated that Chinese actions had caused the recent escalation. “It is clear that the situation we witness over the past four months is a direct result of the actions taken by the Chinese side that sought to effect unilateral change of status quo. These actions resulted in violation of the bilateral agreements and protocol which ensured peace and tranquillity in the border areas for close to three decades,” he said.

He said that the ground commanders are still holding discussions to resolve the situation.

“We reiterate the consensus reached between the two foreign ministers and secretaries that the situation in the border should be handled in a responsible manner and either side should not take any provocative action or escalate matters,” the MEA spokesperson said.

Now the way ahead is negotiations, both through diplomatic and military channels, he said, adding that the Indian side is firmly committed to resolving all outstanding issues through peaceful dialogues.

“We therefore strongly urge the Chinese side to sincerely engage the Indian side with the objective of expeditiously restoring the peace and tranquillity in the border areas through complete disengagement and de-escalation in accordance with the bilateral agreements and protocols,” he added.

NHSRCL to study 7 new Bullet Train corridors totalling 5,000 km

NEW DELHI, Sep 2: Even as the National High Speed Rail Corporation (NHSRCL) is working on the construction of the 508 kmlong Ahmedabad-Mumbai high speed train or Bullet Train project, the agency is also holding studies for 5,000 km long seven new routes across the country.

According to senior NHSRCL officials, the agency has been assigned by the Railway Ministry to study the proposed seven new high speed corridors.

The official said NHSRCL has been entrusted by the Ministry of Railways to prepare Detailed Project Reports (DPR) for the 865 km Delhi-Varanasi, 753 km MumbaiNagpur, 886 km Delhi-Ahmedabad, 435 km Chennai-Mysore, 459 km Delhi-Amritsar, 711 km Mumbai-Hyderabad and 760 km Varanasi-Howrah new proposed corridors.

The official said that the NHSRCL is collecting data on the seven new proposed corridors for the preparation of the DPRs. The NHSRCL is currently constructing the Mumbai Ahmedabad High Speed rail project.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe on September 14, 2017 laid the foundation stone of the ambitious Rs 1.08 lakh crore ($17 billion) project.

Agency (JICA) and the Union Railway Ministry have inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the 508-km corridor, with Japan to partially fund the project.

According to NHSRCL a total of 1,380 hectare land is required for the high speed train project, out of which the Railways have acquired 479 hectare from private persons and 119 hectare from government land.

The NHSRCL is set to complete the 508km corridor project before its deadline of December 2023. According to the official, a 21 km-long tunnel will be dug between Boisar and BKC in Mumbai, seven km of which will be under the sea.

According to the NHSRCL official, the tender for the design and construction of civil and building works, including testing and commissioning of 237 km length of the mainline out of the elevated 460 kms has been floated. The mainline also has one mountain tunnel of about 280 metre, 24 river crossings and 30 road and canal crossings.

The Bullet Trains are expected to run at 350 km per hour covering the 508 km stretch in about two hours. In comparison, trains currently plying on the route take over seven hours to travel the distance, whereas flights take about an hour.

US steps up Covid-19 vaccine development

Washington, Sep 2: Researchers across the US have stepped up efforts towards the development of an effective Covid-19 vaccine, as another vaccine candidate has started phase 3 clinical trial, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

The multi-site clinical trial evaluating an investigational vaccine, known as AZD1222, will enroll approximately 30,000 adult volunteers at 80 sites in the US to evaluate if the candidate vaccine can prevent Covid-19, the NIH said.

Participants will be randomly assigned to the investigational vaccine group or the placebo group, and neither the investigators nor the participants will know who is assigned to which group.

After an initial screening, participants will receive two injections of either the investigational vaccine or a saline placebo approximately four weeks apart.

One person will receive a placebo injection for every two people who receive AZD1222, which will result in approximately 20,000 people receiving the investigational vaccine and 10,000 people receiving a placebo.

The trial primarily is designed to determine if AZD1222 can prevent symptomatic Covid-19 after two doses.

The trial will also evaluate if the vaccine candidate can prevent the novel coronavirus infection regardless of symptoms and if it can prevent severe Covid-19.

It also further assess if the experimental vaccine can reduce the incidence of emergency department visits due to Covid-19, according to the NIH.

Christchurch mosque gunman designated as terrorist entity

The UK-based global biopharmaceutical company AstraZeneca is leading the trial as regulatory sponsor.

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the NIH, and the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority are providing funding support for the trial.

“Safe and effective vaccines will be essential to meet the global need for widespread protection against Covid-19,” NIAID Director Anthony Fauci said.

“Positive results from preclinical research led by NIH scientists supported the rapid development of this vaccine candidate, which has also showed promise in early-stage clinical trials.”

Last month, the NIH announced the start of a randomized, controlled clinical trial evaluating the safety and efficacy of a treatment regimen consisting of the antiviral remdesivir plus the immunomodulator interferon beta-1a in COVID-19 patients.

The trial was anticipated to enroll more than 1,000 hospitalized adults with Covid-19 at as many as 100 sites in the US and abroad.

Another experimental Covid-19 vaccine being developed by the NIAID and American biotechnology company Moderna, known as mRNA-1273, started phase 3 clinical trial in July to evaluate if it can prevent Covid-19 in adults.

The trial, scheduled to be conducted at US clinical research sites, was expected to enroll approximately 30,000 adult volunteers who do not have Covid-19.

Thailand scraps social distancing on rail network

BANGKOK, Sep 2: Thailand’s Transport Ministry said on Wednesday that there is no necessity for practicing social distancing on the rail transport systems as the country had already crossed three months of zero local Covid-19 transmission.

The Ministry’s Department of Rail Transport has decided to ease social distancing measures when travelling on trains by allowing the occupancy of all seats, but passengers must wear face masks and refrain

from talking to each other during the journey, said an announcement by the Ministry.

The statement said that railway service operators should check the temperature of all passengers before boarding and ensure carriages are not too packed.

All passengers have been advised to wash their hands with sanitizer before boarding and after disembarking and to use the Covid-19 tracking application, the statement added.

WELLINGTON, Sep 1: New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern on Tuesday announced that the gunman, who killed 51 people at two mosques in Christchurch last year and was sentenced to life in prison without parole, has been designated as a terrorist entity.

“Designating the offender is an important demonstration of New Zealand’s condemnation of terrorism and violent extremism in all forms,” Ardern said.

A designation under New Zealand legislation freezes the assets of terrorist entities and makes it a criminal offence to participate in or support the activities of the designated terrorist entity, quoted the Prime Minister as saying.

“This designation ensures the offender cannot be involved in the financing of terrorism in the future.

“We have an obligation to New Zealand and to the wider international community to prevent the financing of terrorist acts,” she said.

There are currently 20 terrorist entities designated under New Zealand law, including this offender, the statement said.

Under Section 22 of the Terrorism Suppression Act 2002, the Prime Minister may designate individuals or groups as terrorist entities, on advice from officials.

Details of the designations process and the statements of case supporting designation of these entities can be found on the New Zealand Police website.

Tuesday’s announcement came after the sentencing of 29-year-old Australian gunman, Brenton Harrison Tarranton August 27.

He was sentenced on 51 murder charges, 40 attempted murder charges and one terrorism charge.

The verdict, which is the first of its kind in New Zealand, came three days after the final hearing of the case at the High Court in Christchurch.

On March 15, 2019, Tarrant murdered 44 people at the Al Noor Mosque and killed seven more at the nearby Linwood Mosque.

He also injured 40 others in the mass shootings.

World’s first Jeff Bezos 1st person floating Apple ever to be worth store to open over $200 billion in Singapore SINGAPORE, Aug 29: Apple is set to open its third outlet in Singapore and this time, it will be the world’s first floating retail store at Marina Bay Sands.

According to a report in the local website Today, the new Apple store will be housed in a sphere floating on Marina Bay. “We will soon open the doors to our new store by the Bay. Apple Marina Bay Sands will be at the heart of creativity, a place we’ve made for you to capture your ideas and passions,” said the description on Apple’s web page for the retail location.

“It will be a space for you to explore, connect and create something new. We can’t wait to see where your imagination takes you”.

Apple opened its first store in Singapore at the Knightsbridge building along Orchard Road in 2017.

Its second store, located at Jewel Changi Airport, opened in July last year.

Apple Orchard Road was also the first Apple store to open in South-east Asia, according to reports.

The new store is Apple’s 512th location worldwide.

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug 27: Amazon Founder and CEO Jeff Bezos has become the first person ever whose net worth soared over $200 billion, according to Forbes and Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

The net worth of the world’s richest person went up by $4.9 billion after Amazon stock edged up two per cent, Forbes reported.

Bezos also owns aerospace company Blue Origin, the Washington Post and other private investments.

However, his nearly 11 per cent stake in Amazon makes up over 90 per cent of his massive fortune.

The e-commerce giant saw a huge spike in demands for its services amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

Since the beginning of 2020, Amazon stock is up nearly 80 per cent, said the Forbes report, adding that Bezos’ net worth on January 1 was roughly $115 billion.

Tough times ahead for Movie channels

T

he film or entertainment industry as it has grown into, is going through one change after another.

This column has looked into the fate of multiplexes and other cinema screens, the star system and the way the films are made following the double whammy of Covid-19 and the entry of OTT streaming platforms.

Now it is the time to look into the existence and relevance of the TV channels dedicated to telecasting movies. When television arrived in India, it wielded the power to keep the viewers glued to their seats. It mattered little what was being shown on television.

The film industry, annexed television as its extension. A Sunday feature film became a source of extra income for the film producers.

Then came along the private channels, initially dedicated to movies besides an odd one opting for news telecast. The movie channels had a captive audience while the news channel was a novelty, a concept strange to Indians. It needed to cultivate its viewership.

Not surprising, most operators opted for a movie channel, either as a solo or to supplement its other channels. The content was readily available as well as fresh regular supply assured.

The film business moved on from recovering its investments on a film from its public exhibition in India and the overseas markets that Hindi films enjoyed. Films reached its audience in a leisurely manner, town after town, through touring cinemas, army camps, 16mm rights for festivals and so on. The time period of 18 months was considered apt for a film to recover its cost and bring in profit.

Over a period, auxiliary mediums that developed and helped subsidise the recovery further. Music rights added to the producers’ kitty, but one company enjoyed a monopoly on music in India and that was not a favourable situation for the filmmakers. Radio paid one rupee a song per play!

The film’s opening response and the word of mouth that followed set the tone. A good monsoon was a must for a film to do its round of the circuit. Well, that is the way films were exploited and recoveries made, over a period.

The reason to mention these side effects to a film’s performance is because, the movie channels bought movie rights in advance, a film’s performance at the box office determined its final price. If it did well, the previously agreed-to price was honoured. If not, the price was renegotiated.

These movie channels were welcome as they brought huge revenues for the filmmakers. Times had changed, as compared to Doordarshan paying three to five lakh per telecast (middlemen who fixed the approval of your film came at a huge cost). These private channels were competing with each other and paying in many crore.

As of this date, there are close to 40 channels surviving on Hindi films, with other few showing film-oriented fare. Over the last decade or so, the bidding for star cast Hindi films has stopped. In fact, there came a time when there were no takers for even top rung star films.

While, a lot many non-film-based televisions channels have quit, film-based channels have had few causalities in comparison. But things don’t look rosy anymore. There is no supply of new films and few channels have a repertoire to still draw viewers. Zee, which runs multiple movie channels, has an advantage on this count. It was the first in the market and cornered a lot many old films.

Shemaroo, which has one of the best repertoires of Hindi classics besides content in Gujarati and Marathi, has launched its TV channel. This is in addition to the OTT platform under its label.

As things stand, majority of Hindi movie channels are surviving by telecasting dubbed films from the South. They are fun to watch but the channels seem to be repeating them rather too often. Less said about the English movie channels the better.

India Premiere was a popular phrase when these movie channels showed a new film. Sadly, there are not going to be any ‘Premieres’ on the movie channels. A lot many new films will be premiered on OTT streaming platforms. Only after that will these

films be passed on to the TV channels.

The recent example being “Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior”. The film released theatrically on January 10 this year. This was followed by its release on Disney+ Hotstar on March 6 and the television premiere happened only as late as August 15 on the occasion of 74th Independence Day. In some cases, the OTT platform owners also happen to own a TV channel, which assures an automatic supply of new features to these channels.

As for the films that bypass theatrical release and are streamed straight on OTT, the same thing will apply. They will be offered to movie channels after a duly considered time gap.

There was a system of syndicating films between movie channels. That is to say, the channel which acquired the premiere telecast rights of a movie would get to milk it first, after which it would also circulate the film to other channels. That kept the supply going for each channel. The same practice will have to be followed.

Since the introduction of OTT streaming platforms, as the movie channels don’t command the eyeballs they did, the acquisition price has gone down majorly.

OTT platforms are known to pay a fair price already.

What is the future of movie channels now and, more so, in the days to come, as the online streaming deepens its roots with more subscriptions? After all, India offers a huge consumer base and to sustain, business can be aimed at volumes at affordable costs.

That way, a movie will be there to be watched at leisure with no ad breaks ad nauseam.

When centre is open, and you need a certificate urgently, you can apply and collect it on the spot from their Customer Service Centre. The details of the event must already be registered with BDM. Make sure you take all your identity documents and any supporting evidence. These centres can be very busy and may be long wait, between 11am and 3pm.

LONDON, Sep 3: Workers who have been exposed to sexual harassment at their workplace were at a greater risk of suicide and attempting suicide, warn researchers.

The findings published in the journal ‘The BMJ’ suggests that workplace interventions focusing on the social side of the work environment could help reduce suicides. The “Me Too” movement has brought a lot of attention to work-related sexual harassment in recent years and the impact it can have on businesses and society, but most importantly on individuals.

While previous research has found that sexual harassment at the workplace is linked to physical health symptoms and poorer mental health such as psychological distress, depression, and anxiety, little research has been carried out on its impact on suicidal behaviour. So a team of researchers from Stockholm University in Sweden set out to determine how exposure to

workplace sexual harassment is associated with suicidal behaviour in a large population of Swedish workers.

Any suicides or suicide attempts by these workers over an average follow up period of 13 years were identified from administrative registers. Overall, 4.8 per cent of the workers reported workplace sexual harassment during the previous 12 months: 1.9 per cent of all men and 7.5 per cent of all women. The findings showed that those exposed were more likely to be younger, single, divorced, and in low paid but high strain jobs (high demands but low control), and born outside of Europe.

“More research is needed to determine causality and risk factors for workplace sexual harassment and the mechanisms explaining the association between workrelated sexual harassment and suicidal behaviour, the study authors wrote.

inancial support and sustenance remain a paramount concern for a separating spouse. The situation becomes severe when one of the spouses suffers from family violence and has no independent source of income. Such a situation is observed in migrant families more often and in the cases where the wife is a home-maker and confined to home duties, is dependent on the monies earned by the husband for day to day financial requirements and is unable to support herself/himself independently and adequately. The situation becomes grim when the needs of the small children can’t be attended to.

The family law in Australia provides for a comprehensive framework to address and resolve such distress situations and mandates that a party to a marriage is liable to maintain the other party to the extent the financially capable party is reasonably able to do so. The incapacity to support could either be by reason of age, physical or mental or appropriate gainful employment. There are a number of factors which are considered to

determine the interim maintenance including the age, education, financial resources, income and property, financial needs and obligations, distress in circumstances of the party as a consequent of separation, eligibility to obtain government allowance or benefit from the Australian government, duration of the marriage, and an adverse impact on the earning capacity of the spouse as a consequence of the marriage. Consideration is given to the financial circumstance of the new cohabiting partner. Additionally, the court may consider any other fact or circumstance which it may find relevant in the given particular case.

This all requires a detailed look into the financials and evidence before such an order is made.

Some people are faced with a situation where the financial need is imminently urgent, and it is not practicable to determine what order for payment is required to be made. As a stop gap arrangement, an urgent order for lump sum and / or a monthly payment can also be made to assist with an immediate need till

the evidence of the parties can be otherwise looked into and a judicious determination made. This demonstrates a clear difference in the concept of interim and an urgent maintenance.

Urgent spousal maintenance is usually made in circumstances that could be considered an emergency and when there is a clear need but no time for the parties to provide evidence. The court generally considers: (a) the immediate need for financial assistance; (b) the practicability of making an order in the circumstances where there is sufficient evidence to justify making an interim or a final maintenance order; and (c) the period of the order, which should be for a relatively short duration.

In an unusual case the wife aged 64 made a claim for urgent spousal maintenance against the husband aged 97 for periodic sum, periodontist fee and proposed dental work by the wife’s dentist. The court considered that the wife had paid some money for the dental work partly received but failed to complete the treatment for lack of money and consequently allowed the payment for immediate dental work. Also, the demand for the costs already incurred in context of relationship, when the urgency arose from the communication for payment of the debt and the additional costs in the event of non-payment of the debt was held to meet the criteria for making an order.

The assessment of such a request in context depends on the urgency and capacity to make the payment and the criteria remains sharp in contrast with the interim spousal payment.

Gary Mehigan’s Proof Is In His coffee Celebrity chef Gary Mehigan collaborates with Australia’s leading specialty coffee roasters Veneziano to create an ultimate coffee blend committed to turn each coffee experience into a special occasion

T

he global pandemic has forced us to think beyond our comfort zone. This is the new normal and it will continue to stay with us in the coming year. As we try to understand this restructuring of our lives, I believe that we have become more creative in our approach to life. But the new normalcy has not spared anyone, not even a MasterChef.

So here I am, tucked away in my apartment as I invite Chef Gary Mehigan and Pete Licata of Veneziano Coffee Roasters into my lounge through Zoom. I was very excited when I learned that the former MasterChef judge has come out with a range of speciality coffee, delivering right to your home. Who wants to miss that? Definitely not me.

Zooming from my lounge into his house, I make my secret fandom loudly known, slightly smitten by this amazing food artist talking to me about his launch of “Gary Mehigan Specialty Coffee”. We share a laugh about how lockdown has blessed us all with that extra muffin top.

Mehigan, 53, tells me the idea of started back in 2003 when he was looking for a coffee roaster in Melbourne, as he was tired of imported bland-tasting coffee. A relationship of 17 years started with Bella, his benchmark coffee blends for both his restaurants (The Boathouse and Fenix).

Then, as history would say it, Craig contacted him six months ago. Mehigan recalls it being perfect timing. There’s a gap in the schedule, he loves the coffee and yes, now is the time to do something exciting.

Licata jumps into the conversation, saying that partnership with Veneziano Coffee Roasters had been brewing for a couple of years. Craig Dickson, one of the founders, originally reached out at the start of the year for a collaboration – but being a celebrity chef means a busy life, and the collaboration to develop coffee blends took a back seat.

As Mehigan says, his relationship with Veneziano there was a shift in trend when the first lockdown started – a lot more homemade coffee making. This was perfect, as a lot of people want to learn the art of coffee making, taking some beans home and trying it out – like he does for four to five coffees per day.

This couldn’t be better timing. Priorities have surely changed.

I ask Mehigan if he sees coffee as a part of food, and he notes that the collaboration with Veneziano is not about food – coffee can be a stand-alone. He goes on to say that Melbourne is the hotbed for a resurgence in establishing speciality coffee movement around the world.

For Mehigan, coffee has always been an integral part of his life. His morning, noon and evening are all dictated by a cuppa.

These are the little pleasures in life. I do agree with him that coffee has been flirting with food since we have understood how to perfect that blending when smoking a duck or including it in a cake.

The edge coffee has over tea is the texture, the flavour, the aroma and the temperature. As a foodie, Mehigan relates to tea and coffee as fusions of flavour, but for coffee, it’s all about texture. If you compare espresso to a pour-over coffee, it’s delicate and light, similar to a beautiful chai. But when you compare to espresso, macchiato or a creamy flat white, then coffee blows tea out of the water.

Formally being a tea drinker myself, having converted to coffee since I moved from India to Melbourne, I ask them if they see Mehigan’s range is unique because of the India shifting from a nation of tea drinkers focus on the fruity acidity in the coffee. As it approached time to wrap up the interview, Mehigan tells me how he loves Kolkata – the rich history and its food, especially katthi rolls. Him cooking bhapa ilish (steamed hilsa) with actor Sreenanda Shankar ‘s Masters of Taste - Fox live. He also tells me about his true love for India, and its rich diverse culture. As he was connecting with India – with his interpretation with the sound and colour, the dust and the chaos – I too went back in time. He wants to go back.

For me as a Bengali, I couldn’t be prouder of sitting in Melbourne and talking about Kolkata. I can hear the busy bazaar, the tram, the fishmongers haggling over their fresh fish. I am there on this little trip to Kolkata with him and I can hear the city’s heartbeat as Mehigan talks over our coffee gossiping.

Suddenly I miss it more.

What else can I say about Gary Mehigan?

I think of Swami Vivekanada: “Take up one idea. Make that one idea your life; dream of it; think of it; live on that idea. Let the brain, the body, muscles, nerves, every part of your body be full of that idea, and just leave every other idea alone. This is the way to success, and this is the way great spiritual giants are produced.”

While up close and personal with Gary Mehigan and Pete Licata, I received a quick lesson in perfecting a cup of espresso and the whole new world of coffee.

We now have the choice of bringing home “Gary Mehigan’s Speciality Coffee” and enjoying that café-style coffee in our homes.

On the importance of financial security, Arpana explained that her services help to ensure small business owners can improve their financial literacy and achieve their financial goals.

Asked for her tip to aspiring businesswomen, Arpana said that it was important to maintain the four P’ s business- Passion, Persistence, Patience and People.

“If you have the passion for something, follow your dream. Be patient, be persistent with your efforts, and with support from the right set of people, you can do anything,” she said.

She said she wants to help lead change and be an example to others who may be facing similar challenges in their lives.

Many would perhaps have viewed the misfortune as the end of the road. Not Arpana Patel, though. When her marriage of 19 years ended abruptly, leaving her with two children to take care of, the Fiji- born New Zealander took what she says, “ a leap of faith” and overnight turned into an entrepreneur. Now running a successful business, she has been named as a finalist in the Small Business Advisor category of AMP Women in Finance Awards.

Being a single mother of two- a 10-year-old and another 12, one of them with special needs -I prioritize my children’s routines over mine, which means, most of my meetings are scheduled during their school hours between 9 am and 3 pm,” she said.

In conversation with G’day India, Arpana said that her journey was self-charted.

Between her rapidly expanding resume and several recognitions, Arpana’s influence is no longer limited to only accounting and taxation. She was upfront about her ideas on issues pertaining to gender inequality. As part of her social responsibility, she nurses a strong desire to empower women with financial literacy by developing membershipbased workshop packages, or she may set up podcasts in the near future.

“My choice to become an entrepreneur and start my own accounting and taxation business was really made for me and it happened overnight. My marriage had ended and with two young children to care of, I had to act fast. I had to shift my mindset and take a leap of faith, and so started my own business,” said Arpana.

“There are a lot of barriers and stereotypes that women experience. I want to help change that. I want to show others who may be facing adversity that you can turn things around, you can create new possibilities and achieve great things if you set your mind to it,” she said.

The Melbourne-based entrepreneur started her accounting firm Avenue Accounting Solutions six years ago. Although she is the sole practitioner in Melbourne, she also manages a team in India.

Although Australia has made significant strides towards equality, women still continue to experience inequality in many aspects of their lives. Women and mothers who experienced hardship due to marriage breakdown, job loss or health issues are often at a higher risk of financial insecurity and more likely to experience financial distress.

When asked about her work-life balance especially during the pandemic, Arpana’s reply was prompt. “Discipline is the key.

Ask her about her company’s future plan and she is all enthusiasm. “This year I have started financial coaching for small businesses. As for the future, I would like to explore more avenues which would see my transition from the compliance side of the business to consulting,” she said, her tone conveying conviction and a steely determination.

For now, Arpana is over the moon at being named a finalist for the prestigious award which will be announced via live broadcast on Thursday, the 10th of September at 6 pm.

“This really is a huge honour for me, as I never expected to be recognised for an award like this,” she gushed.

“Great client service, transparent pricing and tailoring a solution to the unique needs of our small business clients are some of the reasons our business has grown since it was established in 2014,” she said.

In recent times, Avenue Accounting Solutions has continued to prosper despite a difficult business environment brought about by the rampaging pandemic.

Through everything Arpana does, her priorities are clear. As an entrepreneur, she is giving opportunities of business education and knowledge of financial independence to small businesses, and as a single mother, her world revolves around her children. It is inspiring to see Arpana using her business craft as leverage to address important issues like women empowerment and breaking the glass ceiling in an otherwise stereotypical world of business.

It was surely a leap of faith, one that has seen her soar.

From orphanage to Hall Of Fame: Lisa’s inspiring journey take her back with them to the States.

After four years of living in the US and Kenya, the family settled in Australia, where Sthalekar set out on the path to becoming one of the world’s most formidable female cricketers.

She shone as an all-rounder and between 2001 and 2013, representing Australia in 187 games across formats. With nearly 4000 runs and over 200 wickets, Lisa was the star of the show.

Lisa credits her father for introducing her to the game. “My father loved the game and I spent a fair bit of them with him in the backyard. I would’ve been about 8-9 when I fell in love with the game,” she was quoted as saying by ‘The Print’.

The Guardian reported that in 2012, Lisa visited the orphanage in Pune where her life began and realised how dramatically her adoptive parents’ choice had changed the course of her life.

SYDNEY, Aug 30: Every success has a story to tell! The famous saying goes handin-hand with most of the athletes. Many past and current sports stars come from very humble origins from where they have found a place in the sun despite all odds being stacked against them.

One such shining star is former Australian cricketer Lisa Sthalekar. She was recently inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame. But that is her achievement; her journey was more interesting or rather eye opening.

It was the year 1978 and Sthalekar was just three weeks old when her foster parents adopted her from an orphanage in Pune. Yes, you read it right. She is an Indian by birth. In fact her real name was Laila. Her biological parents could not support her so they left her at the orphanage.

A couple from the USA were visiting to adopt a son, but their stars were aligned with the little girl. They took one look at Sthalekar and soon the formalities were completed to

In her book ‘Shaker’ which traces her journey, she had written quite openly about a lot of things, including depression. “It is hard sharing extremely personal parts of your life.

Though I guess if others were to read and felt something similar at least they would know they aren’t alone. Also, some of the lessons I learnt might be useful to those going through something similar,” she added.

Trial via Facebook - GUILTY? Judge, Jury & Executioner

y the power vested in me through my Facebook profile, I now pass judgement on your business, character, family, life & pretty much everything I like or don’t like about you.

Yes, the above statement appears harsh, but we all know the reality and how the trials are conducted in social media in the name of personal opinions or reviews. The power of social media is undeniable, it has given individuals and businesses globally a great way to reach the masses. The mum and dad small business owners, dance & music teachers, artists, event promoters, models, politicians, media, charities, NGOs, volunteers and an endless list of others are beneficiaries of social media.

But on the other hand, it doesn’t take much for your competitor or a person who simply doesn’t like you to write a negative review about your business or even worse about your character and leave a long-lasting effect to fight.

Social media intimidation and harassment, in the name of opinions or experiences, have ruined many good lives.

I know some people who were scared or affected by these so-called Facebook trials.

They have had to delete their profiles & pages

and don’t engage in social media activities anymore. Unfortunately, it takes just a few posts and comments to ruin a small business which would have taken blood, sweat and soul of someone to build it from the ground.

“Customers/clients” who are affected by a business instead of reaching out to the business or any authorities take to Facebook and other social media platforms to start a chain of blame and accusations. The business may or may not be even aware of the issue but the whole trial and judgement would have been completed in Facebook groups. If any business or organisation does any wrongdoing bring it to their attention, take it to the right authorities, please don’t pass judgement and prosecute them at will.

More concerning are personal attacks and character assassination that are increasing to astronomical levels.

Friends who fall out or simply don’t agree with you or if you don’t support them on their viewpoint, you may end up in the receiving end of some negative posts about you in the name of raising questions. Generally, when you make a post with your opinion, those who don’t agree have an option to ignore your post or debate in a healthy way, but few take it to an all new level and start fighting publicly and if you reply, most likely it will end up worsening for you. Some thrive on intimidating others and for this reason they are untouchables. Sadly nowadays “defamation, bullying & harassment” are commonly used terms. However, these are very subjective and fluid, and the truth is whether we agree or not everyone is subjected to it in some form or the other.

One big learning for me on social media over the years is to avoid engaging with people who don’t interact respectfully. I used to reply or debate a lot earlier to make my point, to stand my ground, but found that it doesn’t help even remotely. It is better to delete / unfriend / block and move on, after all this is just Facebook, a tool for us to connect with friends and others not to disconnect from reality and ourselves.

A knife doesn’t know the pain or who it cuts, if it’s used to cut others it can be used to cut us as well, so we have to be careful / mindful of the knife. Use it to create, not to cut or destroy. We need to consciously keep away from these negative posts and people who post such content. We should take a pledge not to spread negativity on anyone and shouldn’t be a participant in any negative posts. Defamation, harassment and slander are real, and people may/can take anyone who does these things to court if there are grounds for it. Everyone’s experiences are different, so don’t expect others to avoid a business or person because you don’t like them or don’t force your friends to pick a side. Your friends have the same freedom of choice like you do. The Mantra is to avoid and disengage from the self-appointed “Judge, Jury & Executioner” who conducts trials on others via Facebook or any social media to pass a guilty verdict and most importantly we shouldn’t become either of them.

Is purple the new green?

P

eople are moving towards a healthier lifestyle which focuses on a nutritious diet. To that end one is choosing to incorporate more vegetables for their natural nutrition.

Purple coloured fruit and vegetables have been found to be rich in nutrients and thus have slowly begun to replace existing vegetables, as these are merely different variants of regular items, says Chef Prabhakar Nagaraj, Managing Partner, Elior India.

Speaking to Nagaraj to know about the benefit of purple vegetables and fruit and this rising trend of consuming these items.

Excerpts: How can we incorporate purple food into our everyday diet?

Chef: One can replace regular cauliflower in their meals with purple cauliflower or replace regular cabbage in their salads with red cabbage. Both these replacements help raise the level of antioxidants and phytonutrients compared to their colourful counterparts. An important feature of all purple foods is the ability to help repair and heal cell damage. All these items were already in the traditional food system, but recent scientific backing has boosted it to the forefront.

The recognition of these benefits has led to a great increase in the demand for purple ingredients, which is now being met by farmers who previously only cultivated the regular versions. For example, ever since the discovery of different types of carrots, many farmers have begun to cultivate purple carrots to meet the soaring demand for the same.

Will the power of purple replace the power of green in the coming years?

Chef: Purple food is a recent discovery, hence there is not enough of it in production

to say that it will ‘take over’ from green foods.

Only a very small part of the population even knows that purple foods are equally as good as or better than green foods. It currently runs parallel to green foods as a means of healthy food consumption and will definitely increase over time, given that proper awareness is raised. One way to explain how the growth of purple food in India has increased is by examining how the benefits are stacked up against their usage.

For example, lavender flowers are used in food as a garnish as they not only enhance the appearance of food but also add health benefits by making the skin glow when consumed. The discovery of this benefit has led to a greater demand for lavender and hence, greater cultivation of it. Purple foods follow a similar pattern of increased demand and we must ensure that the supply aspect for it is handled in a robust manner.

Local production of purple foods in particular must be encouraged, given its benefits for the Indian population. In terms of awareness at the local level, people must be sensitised to the fact that purple fruit and vegetables are not regular items that have gone bad. By encouraging the use these items in one’s daily life, one will be convinced to cultivate these vegetables and contribute to the soaring demand.

Can you tell us a few food items that can be prepared using these purple ingredients?

Chef: As said before, purple foods do not require any special treatment while cooking.

You can easily replace normal vegetables with them during the meal creation process, such as using purple potatoes instead of regular ones while making Aloo Jeera. The key here is to determine how much of it to use. Purple foods contain anti-oxidants and based on your requirement of the same, you can determine how much of purple need to be incorporated

into your diet. These anti-oxidants become even more important when it comes to the ability to combat cancer. Previously, we would discard the skins of berries and grapes during preparation and use only the pulp. The discovery of the benefits the skin contains has now convinced both the public in general and us to eat them as a whole for maximum nutritional impact.

How purple rice or pomegranate can enhance the flavour of a dish?

Chef: The use of purple foods in meals is still comparatively low when compared to the population of India. We have not been exposed to their benefits. It will be gradual process of growth, but it is only a matter of time before these items like purple rice and pomegranate are incorporated into our diets.

Encouraging signs such as the increased use of lettuce in salads are the first steps towards this and with time people will come to recognise how it can enhance both the flavour of the dish as well as its health benefits.

How does this help overcome nutritional deficiency and build a stronger immune system?

Chef: In the current situation, a trend has emerged where individuals have begun looking for healthy food that meets their need, in order to combat nutritional deficiencies.

Foods like berries and red cabbage, which have been used as part of diets for many years, have always had the potential to meet these needs. It is only recently with the drive towards incorporating more purple food into our diets that these benefits have been discovered. As these foods have now become more attractive, we will hopefully find that they feature more prominently in menus across homes, thereby helping to meet the nutritional requirements.

They all are very good for health in general, but they are probably not the best thing to load up before you head to bed. These veggies can interfere with your ability to sleep soundly because you’re likely still digesting all that fiber while trying to fall asleep, which leads to being less than comfortable.

Candy bars, ice creams, cakes, etc, are all a big no when it comes to eating before bed. Yes it may sound very comforting to have these after dinner but because of the high sugar content, the calories from them cannot be used immediately so it can get stored as fat.

Chocolate also has caffeine in it and is a sneaky one before bedtime because along with caffeine it also has an amino acid that makes you alert.

Chocolate can be a good energy booster in the afternoon, but it is not a good energy booster at night.

Sugar can also cause your energy to spike, keeping you from easily falling asleep. That sugar and fat makes ice cream a sleep disruptor, rather than supporter.

These issues can lead to a multitude of problems itchiness, hair fall, rough texture etc. Hair expert Sareena Acharya, Artistic Head, Enrich Salon shares tips on how you can identify your scalp type and what recommended course of action could be taken.

Dry Scalp Dry Scalp Is when your skin produces or holds less or no Sebum, Sebum is the natural lubricant/moisturiser of your skin. Dry Scalp can cause itching, flaking, irritation and redness. It might also cause the hair to look dry. These flakes are smaller in size and white in colour.

People with dry skin are more prone to Dry scalp. The condition can also be caused by factors like cold, dry air, older age, excessive washing etc. A dry scalp if not treated in time, may cause Dry Dandruff in some cases.

Treatment: Using a moisturising, cream-based scalp treatment and shampoo will help control dryness and irritation. Using scalp conditioner/ mask will deeply moisten the scalp surface.

One should also avoid shampooing frequently. Physical exercise, balanced diet and drinking enough water will help skin produce enough sebum to lubricate the skin.

Massaging the scalp with oil once in a fortnight will increase blood circulation and stimulate oil-producing glands.

Dandruff The scalp, like rest of the skin on your body, sheds dead skin. Dandruff occurs when this process is faster. In most cases, a yeast like a fungus called Malassezia causes irritation, itching and flaking in patches for people with dandruff.

Certain factors can cause Malassezia to multiply and accelerates skin shedding process including age, hormones, stress.

These flakes (oily/dry) are in patches with yellowish and greyish tinged with a peculiar odour.

Treatment:

In case of Dandruff, treat it with antidandruff treatment once in a fortnight and use an anti-dandruff shampoo twice a week.

A shampoo must-have ingredients like Zinc pyrithione, salicylic Acid or selenium sulfide. Anti-dandruff shampoo may cause dryness in hair and scalp both. Make sure to rotate shampooing with other mild shampoos to balance it.

Avoid using hair styling products on the scalp. These products may cause the scalp to dry or can create build up on your scalp.

Manage your stress with meditation, yoga, deep breathing, and other relaxation techniques. Dandruff keeps re Occurring if treatment is left in between. Treating it regularly with an Anti-dandruff product can manage the condition and prevent itching and flaking.

Oily Scalp Excessive production of Sebum causes oily skin and the scalp being an extension of skin turns out to be oily/greasy. A little oil on the scalp protects the scalp and supports healthy hair, but abnormally oily scalp may cause trouble. The oil attracts dirt more easily, produces dandruff, and makes the hair stick together and creates a flat and limp appearance. In the worst cases, the sebum glands clog the hair roots and may cause excessive hair loss and dandruff.

Some more common causes for an oily scalp are - change of season, heredity, unhealthy eating habits, medications, improper hair care, stress etc.

One must avoid oiling and massaging the scalp.

Treatment: Scalp hygiene and care is very important in case of oily scalp.

Following a dry shampoo method (applying shampoo directly on dry scalp and massage gently to lather with little water) will help remove oil build-up easily.

Smart-tracker uniform: The children’s ‘bodyguard’

VARANASI, Aug 29: Amid the increasing incidents of kidnapping of children, students of Ashoka Institute of Varanasi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s parliamentary constituency, have created a smart-tracker uniform. This will be helpful in finding missing children. With this technique, children could be found and kept informed about their location.

As soon as the child comes out of the house, this device connected to a phone will inform the parents about his/her whereabouts. Its range is unlimited and will be able to track the child even from a distance of a few kilometres. It will act as a child’s bodyguard.

B.Tech final year students Aarti Yadav, Pooja and Sangeeta of Ashoka Institute have created the smart-tracker uniform which is equipped with nano-GPS technology.

Aarti told IANS that incidents of kidnapping have increased during the lockdown. In view of this, a GPS device has been installed in children’s uniform. Simultaneously, a SIM card cloud has been inserted. Putting the command on the SIM card will lead to the correct location of the child.

The inventors say this will not only provide information about the exact location of the children after their disappearance, but also of children who are unable to speak properly, if such children are lost. With the help of a bar code their parents can be informed, and the police will easily be able to nab the kidnappers.

By applying the bar code, the complete profile of the child would be known. This will

enable him/her to be sent home easily. This device is concealed in the children’s pants. It is equipped with a battery which can function comfortably for six or seven hours. Apart from this, a transmitter and a buzzer are also installed.

When the child leaves the house, the transmitter will cause a sound in the receiver which will indicate the child has moved out of the house. It is very useful for parents of young children and costs nearly Rs 1,000.

Aarti said, “We have written a letter to Science and Technology Minister Harsh Vardhan about this innovation. We request the UP government to see this invention and use it in the state so that young children can be more safe. Children’s clothing

Tesla cars to detect speed limit signs now visually

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug 31: EV maker Tesla has rolled out a software update that will let its vehicles Autopilot system detect speed limit signs using cameras.

When the camera detects a speed limit sign, it will display it on the driver visualisation screen in case. A user can also set a speed limit warning.

“Speed Assist now leverages your car’s cameras to detect speed limit signs to improve the accuracy of speed limit data on local roads.

Detected speed limit signs will be displayed in the driving visualisation and used to set the associated Speed Limit Warning,” the EV maker wrote in the new release note.

Most Indian banking apps lag behind in functionality

DESPITE the renewed push for digital due to the Covid-19 pandemic, most Indian mobile banking apps, except ICICIs iMobile app, are behind the curve on functionality, says a new report from market research firm Forrester.

About 70 per cent of Indian online adults with a bank account do their banking on a mobile app or website using their smartphone, show data from Forrester.

However, compared with 2019, banks have improved their user experience only marginally and lag behind in functionality, said the report which evaluated the smartphone apps of five banks in India -- Axis Bank, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, and State Bank of India (SBI). For the study, the researchers scored banks’ mobile apps on 39 functionality and 24 user experience criteria.

“While banks have been focusing on improving UX (user experience), they do not give equal attention to all aspects of it.

ICICI Bank does a good job of streamlining payment experiences but can do better at error prevention,” said the report.

“Axis Bank offers clutterfree visual design and clear content but lacks help pages.

HDFC Bank helps customers prevent errors and shares privacy information up front but

falters with unclear language and marketing material that impedes progress,” it added.

Kotak Mahindra Bank does well with its chatbot but stumbles with poor search, the research showed.

“SBI offers good content around spending patterns but fails to provide sufficient privacy and security cues and content,” according to the report titled “The Forrester Digital Experience Review: Indian Mobile Banking Apps, Q3 2020”.

The results showed that functionality scores of four banks fell. Functionality scores of ICICI Bank, which emerged as the overall digital experience leader, remained unchanged, said the report.

FB limits forwarding to 5 people or group at a time on Messenger

SAN FRANCISCO, Sep 3: In another bid to slow the spread of viral misinformation and harmful content, Facebook on Thursday introduced a forwarding limit on Messenger and users can now forward a message to five people or groups at a time, just like they do on WhatsApp.

“It is an important tool to combating the pandemic, as it can help slow the spread of the virus and save lives.”

The move comes after there has been a surge in spread of misinformation around the Covid-19 pandemic and major elections in the US, New Zealand and other countries inch closer.

“We are introducing a forwarding limit on Messenger to help curb the efforts of those looking to cause chaos, sow uncertainty or inadvertently undermine accurate information,” Facebook said in a blog post.

Cape Town, Sep 3: South Africa has launched a new smartphone app in an effort to prevent a second wave of the coronavirus pandemic, the Department of Health said.

President Cyril Ramaphosa also welcomed the launch of the app, saying it is “a significant milestone in our country’s fight against coronavirus, and will play an important role in preventing a second wave of infections”. and we believe it will help keep people safer online,” it said.

“The more South Africans download the app, the more effective it will be in stopping a second wave of Covid-19 infection,” said the president.

In April this year, Facebook-owned WhatsApp announced to introduce a new limit on frequently forwarding messages where a WhatsApp user can forward such messages to one chat at a time.

“But even as we use the app, we must still wear cloth masks, wash or sanitise our hands regularly, maintain social distancing and take all other precautions to keep safe,” he added.

This limit kicks in once a message has been previously forwarded five times or more.

South Africa has so far recorded 630,595 Covid-19 cases, with 14,389 deaths .

Popular YouTuber shares how he deals with trolls

shish Chanchlani whose YouTube channel recently hit 20 million subscribers, says the audience needs to be a little sensitive when they choose to troll or post personal comments online as doing so might affect a person.

Chanchlani opened up about how he deals with the trolling and the pressure of delivering original contents constantly. Excerpts: Q: You joined YouTube in 2009, in early 2017 you celebrated 1 million subscribers and in 2020 you have crossed 20 million. How has the journey been?

A: I started making vine and short videos in the year 2014. Initially, I was expecting that I would hardly have around 1 lakh subscribers as I just wanted the YouTube Silver Play Button. I never believed nor thought that one day I would have 20 million subscribers on my channel. My journey from ‘Ab Jaane de Ashu’ till ‘Ab Jaane Nahi Dega Ashu’ was only possible because of my fans. I personally feel after 6 years, we all have grown up along with the fans (Acvians). Our fans have made us who we are today.

Q: Has the lockdown

affected your output as a content creator?

A: I think the lockdown has been very productive for me when it started out, but now, sitting at home I am not able to work it out. I have realised during this period that I can’t sit idle and that has taken a toll on me. I am paying attention to things that are least important in life. Going forward, I am concentrating on coming back and producing more content. I think the lockdown has affected everyone. There are a lot of content creators who benefited from it because most of them used to spend time on digital platforms.

Q: During these tough times, what keeps you motivated to entertain your audience?

A: The only thing that keeps me motivated is my audience because I communicate with them whenever I feel low and disconnected.

In return, they have always sent me love and support from their end. It’s the audience who has kept me going to entertain them.

Q: Since there are a lot of content creators on YouTube, how do you make sure that you have something unique to offer to your audience?

A: Every YouTuber has a different style of creating content based on trends or their background; on the other hand there are different types of audience who like a particular style of comedy. My concept is mostly based on what is happening around the world. I make videos on what is going on in real-time. Sometimes my videos are random, but I make sure that it’s relatable, reality with a blend of comedy. Like we are in 2020 now, if you see my videos, they are all based on the current situation and how we are affected due to the lockdown. I observe my family, peer group, relatives, everything that is around me and I mingle my observation with a funny twist. For an YouTuber, observation is the most important thing.

Q: You’ve mentioned that you wanted to be an actor, what’s the story behind that?

A: All my life, my only dream has been to become an actor. I didn’t know what the medium it would be, but I think YouTube was one source

where I could show off my acting skills. I would love to star in films and movies, that is what my passion is. I am working on myself to build-up those skills. Maybe, I would also love to direct a film someday. I believe that I have the skill to direct, I have even directed a short horror film ‘Aakhri Safar’, which is on my channel and did pretty well. My friends’ and family loved it as I was doing it for the first time. So, acting and directing a film is what I am looking forward to pursuing in the future.

Q: What’s the most challenging part about being a comedian?

A: I would say the most challenging part of being a comedian is the fact that has to be fresh content all the time, as you grow up you mature and so do your jokes, you can’t be the same person always. And, to talk about something which is already popular in a different way, is what your audience would like to listen to. The treatment of the joke might differ from the usual one and you might not sync with the audience’s expectations. But one should be prepared for this change and should keep up with it. One should go with the flow, be flexible, and step ahead with time and generations.

Q: How do you cope up with negative comments or trolling on social media? Do they affect you?

A: During lockdown, I did get affected due to negative comments and trolling. I usually prefer ignoring those and put my energy on working on myself and spend good time with my friends and family.

Because, for them it’s not important to know how their comment might affect, us as much as their comments are for us. They judge us based on our picture, which they see on 13-minute video, or the picture that we upload on our social media platforms. I don’t blame them to be very honest as I think some of them do it to grab attention, and some genuinely judge us. But things are different when we meet them in person; I have had an experience where I had come across one of the haters and after meeting me that person has become my fan. He changed his point of view towards me and apologised to me. I totally understand their perspective because they don’t know you in person. The only thing that I am disappointed about is there are few people who hate you for the sake of it, or they think that it’s cool to go against the majority, but they don’t understand that it might affect the person if they get too personal. The audience needs to be a little sensitive about this. The best way to deal with it is to ignore it for sure.

If you are an established business owner, you must know how to access this whole-brain approach to build a team.

As an entrepreneur, have you ever wondered which part of the brain controls which functions? What about which approach is your dominant way of thinking?

We all are aware of the two halves of the brain: the left brain and the right brain. What is important to understand is the distinction and the different functions controlled by these two different parts of our brain. Even if a different part of the brain controls different functions, they don’t operate independently.

However, one of them appears to be more dominant based on an individual’s strengths and preferences.

The left brain is believed to control language, sequencing, math, computation, and logic, while the right side of the brain is the more creative side, where feelings, imagination, and artistic abilities reside.

Being logical, detail-oriented problem solver are the basic traits of an entrepreneur.

Whereas some business owners very much rely on the creative aspect of their business, which is important from a marketing perspective, as well as advertising their products and services.

To be able to learn and understand the two halves of the human brain can be a game-changer for an entrepreneur and their business growth. If you have been overly focused on the creative side of your business which means you have been operating from the right side of your brain. Spending too much time, energy, and resources on creating without testing and trying might lead

to disappointing results.

Let’s consider marketing as an example that is a right-brain activity as it requires traits like creativity or an artist which is essential for designing a campaign or an advertisement. Your marketing campaign might turn out to be a disaster without paying any attention to data and analytics. On the other hand, relying too much on analysis, numbers, and figures, means using the left side of your brain might lead to failure as one might fail to resonate on an emotional level to their customers. Considering the same example; without creativity, your marketing might turn out to be a very uninspiring and very boring campaign for your customers, which fails to grab their attention leading to disaster.

Most of the times leaders tend to separate the left and right brain and look for a creative brain for inculcating new ideas and look for the analytical brain for commercial or work related to numbers. But having a diverse team and cultivating a balanced approach is likely to help an organisation to outstrip their competitors.

So, as an entrepreneur, one must learn and find out ways to balance both functions.

If you are not able to maintain that balance, your company will suffer, and your team will be out of balance too; which will directly impact the culture, systems, operations, productivity, and revenue.

One of the most effective ways to move forward is to lead by example. Set

benchmarks so your team can follow you.

You might have heard of the saying, “your business can only grow, as much as you grow.” Embrace change, become flexible, be a champion, and demonstrate your commitment to your business’ vision and mission so others can follow your footsteps.

The real challenge is to integrate both brains to build a successful organisation.

Using a balanced, both-brain approach, also known as the whole-brain approach; to be able to balance both sides of the brain will assist you in building a balanced team and achieving the desired success in business. By using the balanced approach you will be able to solve the highest value problems in your company, be able to enhance your ability to think differently, have a growth mindset, be able to envision what success can look like or feel like in your business, have an attitude through which you will be able to inspire success in others, which are the attributes of highly successful business owners. However, you must put it into practice to achieve results and that requires a mindset shift at the individual and organisational level.

To shift the mindset at an organisational level, leaders and business owners must think about building skills in a different way which will assist them in filling the gap. In an era of new technology, one must disrupt the old style or pattern and embrace the innovative ways and be open to whatever it takes to be a successful leader to stay ahead of their competitors in these ever-changing times.

The new normal of Indian business travel Travel will continue to play an irreplaceable role in meeting critical business needs, however, travellers’ health and safety, and a new era of trip preparation and policies, will be front and centre as travel resumes, reveals a new survey.

According SAP Concur Business Traveller Survey 2020, 88 percent of Indian business travellers feel concerned about resuming travel while 100 percent travellers will consider some measures from their company critical for safely returning to the road.

Here is an insight on the trends that are shaping a new normal for business travel by determining what measures are being considered as necessary by business travellers, both from themselves as well as from their employers.

Covid-19 has charged health, safety concerns, creating added stress over business travel Thirty-eight percent of Indian business travellers now say they experience the most stress during the trip, rather than before (30 percent) or after the trip (32 percent). When the same study was conducted in August last year, 36 percent of Indian travellers cited the trip itself as the most stressful stage of travel.

With the pandemic dominating news headlines, more than 1 in 3 say their health and safety is their top priority while travelling for business (37 percent).

This is more than three times the number of respondents who

regard business needs (12 percent) as their top priority. The concern for personal health and safety is even more pronounced in China (57 percent), Malaysia (55 percent), and Taiwan (53 percent), where more than half the respondents ranked health and safety as their top priority this year.

Given such stress levels, it stands to reason that 88 percent of Indian business travellers feel concerned about resuming travel. They are especially worried getting sick themselves (57 percent) or infecting their family (46 percent).

Additionally, the trip itself is likely to be anxietyinducing: among those with concerns, 59 percent are concerned about staying in a hotel, 48 percent about being on a plane, and 32 percent about using public transportation.

Organisations in India must prepare to meet emerging traveller expectations When business travel resumes, all (100 percent) of Indian business travellers will consider some measures from their company critical for safely returning to the road. These include mandatory personal health screenings for travelling employees (48 percent), real-time updates and alerts on potential travel risks (40 percent), and easier access to personal protective equipment (37 percent).

Employees will increasingly require guidance from organisations on how to stay safe when they travel. Almost all (99 percent) of Indian business travellers say company trainings would be beneficial, especially trainings on how to protect their health and safety while travelling (67 percent, compared to 54 percent globally) and how to maintain healthy habits while travelling (44 percent).

protecting employee well-being on business trips could risk consequences - 44 percent of Indian business travellers say they would ask to limit travel if their company does not implement the measures they want, 19 percent would look for a position that does not require travel, and 9 percent would consider a position at a different company.

Travellers in India believe in the need to resume in-person meetings Although 29 percent of Indian business travellers say they are worried about resuming travel once restrictions are lifted, even more travellers feel excited. This sentiment is particularly strong in India, where half of business travellers (50 percent) say they are excited about their next trip.

This excitement to return to the road is likely because most Indian business travellers (64 percent, compared to 44 percent globally) anticipate limited representation of their company at industry events while 61 percent expect a reduced number of deals or contracts signed without face-to-face meetings. More than half (53 percent) of Indian business travellers expect declines in new business due to a lack of in-person meetings.

When a trip does need to take place, companies should have a way to ensure that employees only use approved and safe airlines and hotels; that they can receive information on changing ground situations that impact their health and safety; and that the company can reach out to them and render assistance 24/7.

The survey was conducted by Wakefield Research, among 4,850 business travellers defined as those who travel for business three or more times annually from across the globe.

omen dressed in beautiful Kasavu (golden border) sari with gajra (jasmine flowers) in their long black hair, men in lungi, dense green forests and tall coconut trees, aromatic oils, spices, filter coffee, Idli and dosa as well as banana chips - All these amazing things remind me of South India.

And, in the southwestern part of this region sandwiched between the Western ghat mountains on the east, and the Arabian Sea on the west lies a beautiful state known as Kerala. It’s emerald sparkling backwaters, tea plantations and abundant wildlife are some of the many beautiful things that it has to offer.

This magnificent place is not only the land of natural beauty that exhibits picturesque scenes, but it is also a place where you will find peace and love in abundance. This state showcases a blend of cultures where everyone lives harmoniously.

A paradigm of this unison is displayed clearly in its most famous festival called ‘Onam’ which is celebrated annually with full gusto by Malayali diaspora in Kerala and across the world. It is a ten-day event during ‘Chingam’ (the first month of the Malayalam calendar / August-September as per Gregorian calendar). Thrikkakara Temple in Kochi is the focal point of celebrations and the place of origin of this popular festival.

Onam is also known as the ‘harvest festival’ as it signals the end of monsoon with abundant harvest portraying plenitude and happiness.

Onam commemorates the annual visit of the mythical king Mahabali who is considered to have ruled ancient Kerala.

The natives consider their state to have experienced its golden age during his rule as there were no biases or class divides and so a prosperous agrarian culture peacefully existed. Mahabali’s kingdom signified Kerala at its best. The decorations, festivities, and indulgences are people’s way of showing their prosperity and happiness to their glorious king.

Whatever be the history of this occasion, it is till date celebrated in many countries with passion, enthusiasm and immense warmth.

Here in Melbourne, Malayalee Association of Victoria (MAV) and Melbourne Malayalee Federation Inc (MMF) organise a huge event around Onam.

In India, this feast not only involves joyous festivities as well as feasting, but numerous other fun activities that enthral people from different cultures and religions.

Marking the start of this festival is a colourful street procession which displays different folk art forms, musicians and drumbeats, dancers, gold decorated elephants, floats and tableaux. The traditional ritual of laying a floral carpet (Rangoli) also starts on this day, with several layers of flowers added to it day after day. Throughout the ten days there are several cultural displays like Puli kali (mask tiger dance) flaunting manliness and wildness, Kathakali performances and Thiruvathirakali- a popular folk group-dance.

Some other interesting aspects involve the Snake boat race as well as indoor and outdoor games usually organised by resident associations and clubs. The highlight of this festival is a sumptuous meal called ‘Onam Sadya’ or ‘Onam feast’. It comprises of mouth-watering and flavourful traditional food delicacies (usually 26) served on a banana leaf.

Talking about festivals in India, some are solemn religious affairs while others bring with them much gaiety and an occasion to loosen up, enjoy and unwind. Onam brings with it both - The display of its colourful extravaganza sweeps people in delight and Hindus, Christians and Muslims all come together praying and celebrating.

This mega feast is all about congregation and expressions of fraternity keeping the culture of Kerala alive. With its extraordinary charm, it intrigues everyone, transcends any limitations and spreads boundless happiness.

This algorithm can detect abuse against women on

Twitter

A

team of researchers has developed a sophisticated algorithm to detect harmful and abusive posts against women on Twitter that cuts through the rabble of millions of tweets to identify misogynistic content.

Online abuse targeting women, including threats of harm or sexual violence, has proliferated across all social media platforms.

Now, researchers from Queensland University of Technology (QUT) have developed a statistical model to help drum it out of the Twittersphere.

The team mined a dataset of 1 million tweets then refined these by searching for those containing one of three abusive keywords - whore, slut, and rape.

The team’s model identified misogynistic content with 75 per cent accuracy, outperforming other methods that investigate similar aspects of social media language.

“At the moment, the onus is on the user to report abuse they receive. We hope our machine-learning solution can be adopted by social media platforms to automatically identify and report this content to protect women and other user groups online,” said Associate Professor Richi Nayak.

The key challenge in misogynistic tweet detection is understanding the context of a tweet. The complex and noisy nature of tweets makes it difficult.

On top of that, teaching a machine to understand natural language is one of the more complicated ends of data science as language changes and evolves constantly, and much of meaning depends on context and tone.

Other methods based on word distribution or occurrence patterns identify abusive or misogynistic terminology, but the presence of a word by itself doesn’t necessarily correlate with intent, said the paper, published in the journal Springer Nature.

“Once we had refined the 1 million tweets to 5,000, those tweets were then categorised as misogynistic or not based on context and intent, and were input to the machine learning classifier, which used these labelled samples to begin to build its classification model,” Nayak informed.

The team hoped the research could translate into platform-level policy that would see Twitter, for example, remove any tweets identified by the algorithm as misogynistic.

“This modelling could also be

Charter aviation requests for leisure travel pick up

D

ue to the pandemic, people today are more mindful and cautious while choosing their mode of travel. Whether its health risk concerns or just getting where they need to be, individuals or companies that have the means to charter flights, but had previously eschewed it, are now looking at the option, says a private aviation company.

Kanika Tekriwal, CEO and Founder, JetSetGo Aviation says that the private charter aviation operator and manager is receiving one query every alternate day for travel to Goa and other domestic destinations which are safe and don’t have too many cases.

“Also, a lot of queries are received from people who want to travel internationally, which has only recently resumed. A lot of people are trying to get to places which are safe to get that desired and much awaited holiday,” Tekriwal said.

The company is witnessing demand for both domestic as well as international locations. While Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, apart from Goa, make it to the domestic request list, international locations include Dubai, Maldives, Sri Lanka, and Thailand.

Why are people preferring to fly privately for work or a holiday?

People who eat pasta have better diet Good news for pasta eaters! Pasta consumption in both children and adults is associated with better diet quality and nutrient intakes than that of those adults and children who do not eat pasta, say researchers.

When evaluating the weight parameters, no associations were observed in male adults and children. In adult women, however, pasta-eaters showed a beneficial weight-related outcome.

According to the study published in the Journal ‘Frontiers in Nutrition’, pasta consumption in adult females was associated with reduced waist circumference, body weight and body mass index (BMI).

“Pasta can be an effective building block for good nutrition throughout the lifecycle as it serves as a perfect delivery system for fruits, vegetables, meat, fish and legumes,” said Diane Welland, Director of Nutrition Communications for the National Pasta Association in the US.” Think of pasta as a canvas from which you can add almost any nutrient-dense,

fibre-rich food you and your family like, to create memorable and delicious meals,” Welland added.

The study examined the association between pasta consumption, shortfall nutrient intakes as defined by the 2015 dietary guidelines and diet quality in comparison to non-pasta consumption in the US population with children aged between 2-18 years and adults above 19

years.

Pasta consumption was defined as an all-dry domestic and imported pasta/noodle varieties made with only wheat and no egg.

From the analysis, researchers identified a number of key positive nutritional dietary patterns associated with those who eat pasta as part of their diet compared to those who don’t eat pasta.

The analysis underscores the nutritional importance of grains such as pasta as consistent with a healthy diet. It shows that pasta-eaters have better quality diets than those who don’t eat pasta.

The findings showed that no significant associations were seen with body weight, waist circumference and body mass index in children and adult males. In adult women aged between 19-50 years, pasta eating was associated with lower body weight and waist circumference.

“Pasta is a convenient, nutritious, easyto-prepare meal for both young and the old and pleases even the pickiest of eaters,” the study authors wrote..

Researchers have found that older people who eat plenty of Vitamin C -- commonly found in citrus fruits, berries and vegetables -- have the best skeletal muscle mass.

This is important because people tend to lose skeletal muscle mass as they get older - leading to sarcopenia (a condition characterised by loss of skeletal muscle mass and function), frailty and reduced quality of life.

People over 50 lose up to one per cent of their skeletal muscle mass each year, and this loss is thought to affect more than 50 million people worldwide, according to the study, published in the Journal of

Nutrition.

“It’s a big problem because it can lead to frailty and other poor outcomes such as sarcopenia, physical disability, type-2 diabetes, reduced quality of life and death,” said study researcher Ailsa Welch from the University of East Anglia (UEA) in the UK. “We know that Vitamin C consumption is linked with skeletal muscle mass. It helps defend the cells and tissues that make up the body from potentially harmful free radical substances,” Welch added.

But until now, few studies have investigated the importance of Vitamin C intake for older people.

whether people eating more Vitamin C had more muscle mass than other people.

The research team studied data from more than 13,000 people aged between 42-82 years, who are taking part in the EPIC (European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition) Norfolk Study.

They calculated their skeletal muscle mass and analysed their vitamin C intakes from a seven-day food diary. They also examined the amount of vitamin C in their blood.

The study found that people with the highest amounts of Vitamin C in their diet or blood had the greatest estimated skeletal muscle mass, compared to those with the lowest amounts.

“We are very excited by our findings as they suggest that dietary Vitamin C is important for muscle health in older men and women and may be useful for preventing age-related muscle loss,” said study researcher Richard Hayhoe also from UEA. This is particularly significant as Vitamin C is readily available in fruits and vegetables, or supplements, so improving intake of this vitamin is relatively straightforward.

“We’re not talking about people needing mega-doses. Eating a citrus fruit, such as orange, each day and having a vegetable side to a meal will be sufficient for most people,” the study authors wrote .

Air pollution linked to higher asthma risk in young kids

ondon, Aug 20: Researchers have warned that children exposed to higher levels of fine particles in the air (known as PM2.5) are more likely to develop asthma and persistent wheezing than children who are not exposed.

After taking account of other potentially influential factors, the researchers found higher levels of asthma and persistent wheezing in children of parents with asthma and in children of mothers who smoked during pregnancy.

According to the study, published in the journal BMJ, PM2.5 can come from various sources, including power plants, motor vehicles and domestic heating.

The particles (about 3 per cent or less of the diameter of a human hair) can penetrate deep into the lungs and some may even enter the circulatory system. “These findings support emerging evidence that exposure to air pollution might influence the development of asthma,” said the study authors from the Aarhus University in Denmark.

Short term peak exposure to air pollution has been associated with worsening of asthma, whereas the risks of long term exposure and the timing of exposure for the onset of asthma is less clear.

any believe that lying down for a snooze is a harmless activity but now, a new study shows that napping for longer than an hour is linked to higher risk of heart disease and death.

Previous research on the link between daytime naps and death or cardiovascular disease has produced conflicting results. In addition, it did not account for the duration of night-time sleep.

Sharman Joshi wants more comedy films, shows in OTT space

ctor Sharman Joshi feels there is less comic content available on OTT platforms.

“It was fun watching thrillers when they initially came in. Some of them are so well made. But, I personally feel that now there is an overdose of thrillers in the digital space. It is very important to have projects that lighten up our mood and make us feel happy,” he added.

really want to open my restaurant for the Indian people in India,” Ramsay said.

The Michelin-star chef was in Coorg, one of the most serene hill stations in South India, shooting for the second season of National Geographic’s “Gordon Ramsay: Uncharted”, before Covid-19 paralysed the world. He had cooked famous pandi curry for local women in Coorg. He also shot portions of the show in Kerala.

“The south is all about spices and it felt amazing to smell the fragrances of those

masalas. It was an incredible experience visiting India this time. I shot with local female cooks. Trust me, they are far, far better than me. In fact, I was surprised to see how they were not sweating while cooking in such hot climate,” he shared.

Ramsay also emphasised on the need of introducing subjects related to food and cooking in schools.

“I wake up every day and I think about sustainability. I think about seasonal cooking, and I think about the healthy aspects, being a father of five. I think about diabetes, in terms of making sure that we have the correct sugar levels, with children growing up. I think about the educational part of food, how much confidence it gives to youngsters.

Every time it’s not about getting an A star in English or an A-plus in French.

Sometimes things like cooking can also give confidence when you’re young. It is as important as learning English or math,” he said.

“Looking after yourself and your eating habits is important. Cooking should be an example in many schools for boosting students’ confidence and making them understand how to look after their wellbeing. That’s welfare. And this is a big agenda for me this year, to encourage more people to cook and talk and have the best conversations with your loved ones around the table,” Ramsay added.

Myth 2- Mangoes cause heat and can give boils or acne on the face.

Mangoes are a heat specific food, that’s true, but there is a proper way of consuming them. Mangoes should be dipped in water for hours before consumption. This is done to wash away all the anti-nutrition that the mangoes may contain, before consuming.

ow more than ever, food is just a mere few steps away while most of us have been working from home and for kids- remote learning at home, all while exercise may be limited since we are not going out as much.

During the first closure it was all about baking and making delicious goods that we normally wouldn’t have time for, and now here we are five months later…

As many of us are now at home for most of the day, it is quite natural for our routine and eating patterns to change.

Here are a few tips to help you from thinking you NEED to make drastic changes after we come out the other end of this:

Examples include: • Biscuits (sweet or savoury) • Cakes and pastries • Chocolates • Lollies • Chips • Fried foods (samosa, pakora etc) • Salty namkeen foods • Soft drinks • Juices • Ice cream • High-sugar desserts

EAT MINDFULLY Before you eat, ask yourself – Am I hungry? Or am I eating purely out of habit?

If you answer is habit, this is something which may take a little practice of trying to reduce overtime.

WHAT SNACKS SHOULD I LIMIT? We never suggest completely avoiding any food, however, there are foods which would be considered a ‘sometimes food’ for consumption in small amounts only occasionally. Normally these snack options are a ‘quick fix’ and offer the body very limited nutrients other than sugar, fat or salt. The more we have these foods, the more our body will start craving for them.

I am hungry, what can I eat? And how much?

The first most important suggestion would be to look for foods that are high in fibre. Fibre helps keep our appetite content and keeps the bowels moving.

At times we feel hungry because we may be missing out on certain nutrients for example protein, especially vegetarians.

Some daily examples of these foods include: • Fruits (2 fresh, frozen or dry fruits 3 tablespoons approx.)

• Popcorn 1 cup (unsalted and made with canola oil) • 1 small bowl cucumber and tomato chaat (can also add ½ cup of bhel, poha or moong to your salads) • Hummus and vegetable sticks* • Handful of roasted gram or chickpeas* • Nuts (1 handful of unsalted nuts or seeds) * • 1 tablespoon peanut butter and 1-2 rice thins* • 2 slices of cheese* • 1 cup of milk* • ¾ cup of yoghurt* • 1 egg* *indicated foods containing protein also.

KEEP UP YOUR REGULAR ROUTINES It is important to make sure you are eating your meals spread out throughout the day and don’t miss meals. Don’t forget to drink water!

PLAN YOUR SHOPPING Planning what snacks, you bring home in advance will help make snack time a lot easier.

Chicken Jhat Phat

Tasty chicken in no time!

Serves 2

For a really quick meal try this chicken dish cooked with vegies in a mild sauce.

Making chicken doesn’t has to be always an elaborate process.

I have used skinless chicken breast fillet with a mixture of Indian spices and cooked it like Chinese style stir fry!

It’s different, tasty, easy, quick and makes a wonderful dish.

A must try chicken with vegies

INGREDIENTS 500 gm chicken fillet cubed or sliced handful of beans sliced 1 med red onion sliced 1 red capsicum sliced 1/2 cup sliced mushrooms 1 tbs ginger sliced 1 tsp ground coriander 1 tsp ground chilli 1 tsp ginger/garlic paste each little grated rind of lime (opt) salt to taste olive oil to cook SAUCE

1 cup stock 2-3 tbsp sweet chilli sauce 1 tsp ground all spice 1 tbsp lime juice pinch nutmeg 1 tsp arrowroot or cornflour Salt to taste Olive oil to cook

METHOD

Marinate chicken with ginger,garlic. coriander,chilli and lime rind for about 30 mins.

Heat oil in wok or pan. Add sliced ginger, onion and capsicum and stir fry about 2-3 mins. Set aside.

In the same wok heat a little oil and stir fry the chicken pieces till tender.

Whisk all the ingredients for the sauce in a bowl

and pour over the chicken and mix well.

Add the veges to the chicken and toss well. Pour cornflour mixed with 2 tbsp water and cook until thickens.

GARNISH: chopped spring onion or coriander leaves SERVE:

Hot with basmati rice or brown rice.
