Keeping Victorian Workers in Key Sectors Safe

MELBOURNE, Jan 10: Given the current rate of COVID-19 hospitalisations and cases, a number of important but proportionate changes will be introduced to further protect our highest-risk health care and hospitality settings – and key workforces – from the risk of outbreaks and super-spreader events.

Under new pandemic orders coming into place at 11:59pm Wednesday 12 January, workers in key sectors who are already required to be fully vaccinated must get their third dose before being permitted to work onsite.

This will apply to healthcare, aged care, disability, emergency services, correctional facility, quarantine accommodation and food distribution workers. Workplaces must sight and record proof of vaccination.

Workers eligible for a third dose on or before Wednesday 12 January will have until Saturday 12 February to get their vital third dose. Workers not yet eligible for a third dose will be required to get it within three months and two weeks of the deadline to receive their second mandatory dose.

Food distribution workers includes manufacturing, warehousing and transport (freight/port) workers involved in food distribution. Retail supermarket staff are not included in the mandate.

Victorians in these priority cohorts were among the first required to have their first and second dose vaccination during 2021. The mandatory vaccination requirement will not apply to workers who have a valid medical exemption.

This order responds to the increased risks of COVID-19 exposure to critical workers, their proximity to vulnerable people, the higher risk of the virus spreading in their workplace and the need to protect access to essential goods and services.

All Victorians continue to be encouraged to get their third dose as soon as they become eligible and we’ll continue working with public health experts and industry on vaccination requirements.

As a sensible step to reduce the risks of the virus spreading, indoor dancefloors within hospitality and entertainment venues must close from 11:59pm 12 January. Venues can still operate and there are no changes to the density settings currently in place.

This change reflects settings already in place in other states, including New South Wales. Indoor dancefloors at weddings will be permitted, but wedding hosts and guests should still consider the risks of dancefloors and choose to locate them outdoors if possible.

The strong recommendations that people work from home if they are able and that patrons in hospitality and entertainment venues opt for seated service will continue.

It is recommended that people visiting these venues who can access Rapid Antigen Tests (RAT) should use them before attending.

Please continue to monitor your health and get tested if you are experiencing symptoms.

In addition, further visitor restrictions will be applied to hospitals and aged care settings – reflecting the vulnerable nature of patients and residents in these facilities.

per day, but visitors must return a negative RAT result before entering. If no RATs are available at the facility, residents will be permitted no more than two visitors.

Visitors in hospitals must have received two doses of the vaccine or must return a negative RAT result before entering. Adult visitors who are not fully vaccinated must wear an N95 mask during their visit. Standard face masks continue to be mandated for children aged 8 and above.

While test requirements upon arrival remain unchanged, fully vaccinated international arrivals will no longer need to get a second PCR or RAT five to seven days after their arrival. This change is in line with the decision of National Cabinet last week and recognises the high levels of COVID-19 transmission currently in the community.

To ensure Victorians can continue to access essential food supplies, workers in the manufacturing, distribution or packaging of food and beverages including retail supermarket workers may be exempted from close contact isolation requirements in order to attend work from 11.59pm Wednesday 12 January, if it is necessary for continuity of operations and other options have been exhausted.

To mitigate risks, exempted workers must be asymptomatic, undertake daily RATs for 5 days and return a negative result prior to attending work. They can’t enter shared break areas, and employers are asked to facilitate solo break time.

In addition, face coverings must be worn, using N95/P2 respirators if possible. Both the worker and workplace must consent to the worker’s return.

This new close contact isolation exemption for asymptomatic food distribution workers is similar to the arrangements already in place for critical healthcare workers.

Information on updated COVIDSafe settings and third dose vaccination requirements will be published at www. coronavirus.vic.gov.au when the orders come into effect at 11:59pm Wednesday 12 January.

New Pandemic Declaration to Support Omicron Response

MELBOURNE, Jan 9: As part of Victoria’s continued response to the global coronavirus pandemic, Premier Danial Andrews has extended the pandemic declaration to apply to the state of Victoria from 11.59pm Wednesday 12 January for three months.

The declaration was made under section 165AE of the Public Health and Wellbeing Act 2008 after consultation with and consideration of advice from the Minister for Health and Acting Chief Health Officer.

In making the declaration the Premier was satisfied on reasonable grounds there was a serious risk to public health throughout Victoria due to the coronavirus disease, including the rapid spread of the Omicron variant leading to significant case numbers not previously experienced in Victoria. This risk requires continued public health and other protective measures.

In particular, the Acting Chief Health Officer noted Omicron had become the dominant strain, estimated to account for more than 75 per cent of newly diagnosed cases.

While 93 per cent of Victorians over 12 years have received two vaccine doses against coronavirus, there is currently a low

proportion of Victorians who have received a third dose. Restoring protection through third dose vaccinations is a high public health priority.

The Acting Chief Health Officer also noted the continuing rise in hospital and intensive care unit admissions, with no indication that Victoria has reached its peak, as well as the potential significant negative impact on essential services and supply chains.

After the initial pandemic

declaration, which lasted four weeks, subsequent extensions can last for up to three months.

A pandemic declaration gives the Minister for Health the authority to make pandemic orders he considers reasonably necessary to protect public health after considering the Chief Health Officer’s advice

and other relevant factors, including social and economic factors.

The extended declaration also mandates the formation of the Independent Pandemic Management Advisory Committee of experts and community representatives to advise on pandemic response and management.

The Statement of Reasons, and the advice of the Acting CHO and the Minister for Health will be tabled in Parliament.

More Swim Teachers to Make a Splash in Time for Summer

MELBOURNE, Dec 29: Hundreds of Victorians are taking the plunge into new jobs, with the Andrews Labor Government making sure the community is safe in the water.

Minister for Employment Jaala Pulford announced 280 people in need of employment will make a splash, as swim teachers in a $3.4 million partnership between Jobs Victoria and the Australian Swim Coaches and Teachers Association (ASCTA).

The jobs are not only addressing a shortage of swim teachers but will also give young swimmers the opportunity to catch up on vital water safety education as the weather warms up.

The initiative is assisting those most impacted by loss of employment through the pandemic including women over 45, young people under 25, multicultural communities and people with a disability.

Workers will earn while they learn, receiving nationally accredited swim

instructor and water safety training and first-aid and CPR training.

Tailored support will also be made available to the new starters so they can succeed, including job-readiness training, dedicated individual mentoring and funding to purchase things like goggles and swimwear.

The Jobs Victoria Swim Teacher initiative is supported by the $250 million Jobs Victoria Fund, creating 10,000 steady and secure jobs for those most impacted by the pandemic.

Australian-First TAFE Course to Diversify Victoria Police

MELBOURNE, Jan 4: A one-of-a-kind course funded by the Andrews Labor Government is giving more Victorians from culturally diverse backgrounds the chance to pursue rewarding jobs in the emergency services, creating a more diverse police force.

The Policing Recruitment Pathway TAFE course offered through Victoria University has helped dozens of African Australian students into employment at Victoria Police since it began in 2019.

The free 15-week short course was developed to improve cultural understanding, build better relationships between African Australian communities and police, and create

a more inclusive and representative police force.

Students learn literacy and numeracy skills, personal fitness and an understanding of policing as a foundation to undertake the Victoria Police Academy entrance exam.

More than 110 students have enrolled in the course with many supported to pass the Victoria Police entrance exam and at various stages of the recruitment process. Some graduates have taken alternative pathways, including into the health industry.

Graduates are now working in a variety of roles including as Victoria Police constables, Protective Services Officers and Police

Custody Officers right across Melbourne – in Williamstown, Dandenong, Melton, Sunshine, South Melbourne and Cranbourne.

Policing Recruitment Pathway is offered in partnership with Africause, Jesuit Social Services, AMES Australia, Maurice Blackburn Lawyers and Matchworks.

The Labor Government invested $137,000 in this program as part of its record $3.2 billion investment to rebuild TAFE and support universities and higher education to ensure Victorians have access to high quality education and rewarding career pathways.

Delivering Safe and Successful Kinder For 2022

MELBOURNE, Jan 5: The Andrews Labor Government is delivering extra support to kindergartens across the state, helping them stay COVIDSafe and continue to deliver world-class early childhood education to Victoria’s littlest learners.

Minister for Early Childhood Ingrid Stitt today announced a minimum funding guarantee for sessional kindergarten services for this year, alongside an extra $7.4 million in COVIDSafe support for services to keep children and staff protected.

Sessional kindergartens delivering funded Three-Year-Old Kindergarten for the first time this year will have their minimum funding guarantee based on their 2021 four-year-old enrolments.

Services already delivering three-year-old programs will be guaranteed funding of 80 per cent of the combined three- and four-year-old enrolments in 2021.

To keep the youngest children – who cannot yet be vaccinated – safe at kinder, an extra investment in kinder services’ COVIDSafe measures will help all services delivering a funded kindergarten program in

2022 meet any additional costs associated with helping to reduce the spread of the virus for the first half of the year.

The payments will provide $946 per term to services with 49 or fewer kindergarten enrolments, and $1,576 per term to services with 50 or more kindergarten enrolments in for Terms 1 and 2.

In an Australian-first, the Labor Government is investing almost $5 billion this decade to provide three-year-old children with access to an additional year of funded kindergarten programs – giving them the best start to their education journey.

From this year, all three-year-old children across Victoria will have access to at least five hours of kindergarten, which will scale up to reach the full 15-hour program by 2029.

Boosting Local Schools, GPs And Pharmacies in Vax Blitz

MELBOURNE. Jan 11: The Victorian Government is helping local doctors and community pharmacies deliver more doses for kids between 5 and 11 on school grounds as part of the Commonwealth’s coronavirus vaccination program.

Through a new $4 million grants program, the Victorian Government is encouraging GPs and community pharmacists to establish additional mini-vaccination clinics at schools in areas that need more uptake, due to identified access challenges or increased risk of transmission.

As part of the new Primary Care Vaccinations in Schools program, grants will help local and trusted health professionals deliver vaccinations to students in the familiarity and comfort of their own school environment, outside of school hours.

Applicants will nominate the local government areas and number of schools and students they can help vaccinate – then successful applicants will be matched with schools in priority areas.

Successful applicants can receive up to $6,500 to cover staffing, travel and equipment costs and more. An additional $5,000 clinic establishment fee per school is also available, plus additional loadings for specialist schools or small, rural or regional schools.

In addition, the Victorian Government will roll out 30 pop-up vaccination clinics at primary schools across the state. The popups will be open to all children aged 5 to 11, not just those attending the school hosting the clinic.

The pop-up school vaccination sites will be rolled out over the coming weeks, with bookings available soon. Families are encouraged to make a booking now at one of the many state-run sites currently open for five to 11 doses, or at one of the many local GPs and pharmacists delivering kids vaccines across the state.

To date, $3.4 million in grant funding has been approved for 270 providers – and more applications are still under consideration.

Some 22 priority LGAs have been reached, with 51 grants so far awarded to regional providers.

Being vaccinated protects children and reduces transmission within families, schools and in the community including those we care most about such as grandparents.

The new, child-focused grants come as the latest round of Vaccine Enhancement Grants supporting GPs and pharmacies to deliver more doses comes to a close, with more than 586 expressions of interest received.

Among the successful recipients are a general practice in Melbourne’s inner north who estimate they’ll be able to deliver a 200 per cent increase in weekly doses thanks to the grant, and a pharmacy in the City of Knox that can extend service by an extra 10 hours a week and open its doors to walk ups.

Australia must push through Covid surge: PM

CANBERRA, Jan 10: Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said that the country must "push through" surging coronavirus infections.

Speaking to reporters, Morrison said that

despite record infection numbers, Australia's hospital system was coping with outbreaks of the Omicron variant.

"You've got two choices here. You can push through, or you can lock down. We're for pushing through," he said.

"The whole pandemic has been tough and Australians have shown resilience, patience, and determination."

Australia on Monday reported more than 60,000 locally-acquired Covid cases for the sixth consecutive day and 20 deaths, 18 in New South Wales and two in Victoria.

Governor-General David Hurley was among the new cases. Hurley confirmed he tested positive in a statement.

Morrison revealed that 5,097 patients were currently hospitalised.

"There are 78 patients who are on ventilators which are well within capacity. The major stresses on the hospital system relate

to workforce issues," he said.

Australia's coronavirus vaccine rollout on Monday opened up to more than 2.3 million children aged five to 11.

There were reports of general practitioners cancelling vaccination appointments for children on Monday due to a lack of supply, prompting Vaccine Taskforce Commander Lieutenant General John Frewen to call for patience.

The Australian Health Protection Principal Committee (AHPPC) on Monday endorsed a new set of national guidelines for close contacts in vital industries.

Under the new rules, close contacts of confirmed cases who work in critical supply chains, emergency services and food processing, production and distribution will be able to continue working as long as they remain asymptomatic.

'4 in 10 Aus businesses facing significant impacts from labour shortages'

CANBERRA, Jan 4: About four in 10 Australian businesses are experiencing significant impacts from the Covid-induced labour shortages, a new research by one of the nation's leading banks revealed.

The Business Insight Report, released by the National Australia Bank (NAB), was based on responses from about 1,600 businesses across a broad range of industries from midNovember to mid-December last year.

NAB CEO Ross McEwan said bringing talent into Australia would be the key to alleviating the employment situation.

"Australian businesses are facing significant skilled and unskilled labour shortages. Almost every employer I talk to, from cafes, tourism, agriculture, and manufacturing, is saying 'we can't get workers'," McEwan said.

"To get the economy really firing we will need to bring people into Australia and make sure, as a nation, we're building a skilled workforce for the future," he said.

The report said that 38 per cent of medium-sized businesses and 37 per cent of larger firms viewed labour shortages as being a "very significant issue", compared with 31 per cent of small businesses.

Lacking trade workers (35 percent) and professionals (32 per cent) are the most common types of the labour shortage, according to about one in three Australian firms.

By state, Western Australia (WA) had the most pressing need for workers with 44 per

cent of businesses saying labour shortages had made a very significant impact over the past three months.

At the other end of the scale, only 24 per cent of businesses in the island state of Tasmania reported such a problem.

WA also leads in expectations of labour shortages over the next 12 months (43 per cent), followed by New South Wales, Queensland, and the Australian Capital Territory (all 39 per cent), South Australia and

Northern Territory (36 per cent) and Tasmania (20 per cent).

McEwan said that data scientists, digital experts and technology skills were in high demand right across the economy in Australia.

"At NAB, we're doing a lot of work to retrain and invest in our workforce and we now have more than 2,000 colleagues who are certified cloud-computing practitioners," he added.

Covid testing pushes Australian healthcare system to brink

SYDNEY, Jan 5: Massive surges in Covid-19 infections in Australia, fuelled by the Omicron variant, are placing huge pressures on the healthcare system, which is struggling to keep up with unprecedented demands for testing.

On Wednesday, New South Wales (NSW), the most populated state and the epicenter for the nation's current outbreaks, reported a record high of 35,054 new cases within the past 24 hours out of 108,844 tests.

Those cases were detected by PCR nasal swabs, administered for free throughout medical clinics and testing centres throughout the state.

The besieged NSW facilities, like those in the neighbouring state of Victoria, have faltered throughout the nation's summer holiday period, with long queues causing people to wait for up to several hours to get tested.

Some overstretched laboratories in both states have had to temporarily close this week due to factors such as staffing

shortages and the high positive test rates slowing down the pathology process.

More than 70 drivethrough testing sites across NSW are to stay closed until next Monday, according to the NSW Health's website, while others are operating on limited hours.

The frenetic workload has also caused errors such as late last month when hundreds of infected people in NSW were initially wrongly told they had tested negative.

To ease such burdens, state and federal leaders are increasingly urging people to only get a PCR test if they have Covid symptoms or have been in close contact with an infected person.

The new message is for people to "take personal responsibility" by opting for rapid antigen tests (RATs) which can be done at home. The sudden reliance on these do-ityourself kits, however, is causing its own challenges.

One of the main difficulties is that the RATs have become scarce, with many pharmacies selling out almost instantly. This, in turn, has led to reports of "price gouging" with retailers charging far in excess of the usual prices, which is about 15 to 20 Australian dollars (about 10 to $14.40) per test.

The fast-evolving situation is being investigated by the nation's "consumer watchdog", the Australian Competition and

Consumer Commission (ACCC).

"We are seeking information from suppliers about their costs and the current pricing of rapid antigen tests," ACCC Chair Rod Sims said.

"We won't be shy to name and shame suppliers and retailers we consider to be doing the wrong thing."

Union groups have also been quick to note the impact on people who have already suffered economically during the pandemic.

The Health Services Union (HSU) said state and federal governments needed to provide people with free RAT kits.

HSU national president Gerard Hayes said on Wednesday that the governments had allowed Omicron to "rip through the community" without having an adequate plan for testing.

"Now our health system is currently overwhelmed and private testing clinics are temporarily closing due to the backlog of samples to be processed," Hayes said.

"We cannot expect potentially Covidpositive patients to travel to multiple different shops to find RATs, and then 'pay through the nose' for them."

Meanwhile, speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet said RATs would soon be widely available.

Perrottet said he hoped his government could reach a "financial agreement" with its federal counterparts to "ensure rapid tests are available to anyone right across the state who needs one."

The issue of supply and funding of RATs was expected to be raised at a National Cabinet meeting due to be held later.

Retailers hiking rates of Covid test kits to face jail time

CANBERRA, Jan 8: Australian retailers who hike prices of Covid-19 test kits will face prison time and fines under a new law.

The federal government listed rapid antigen test (RAT) kits for Covid-19 on Australia's biosecurity determination, making price gouging on the product illegal.

In a statement, Health Minister Greg Hunt and Home Affairs Minister Karen Andrews said exporting RATs from Australia has also been banned "unless a valid exception applies".

"These measures are consistent with those implemented for masks and other personal protective equipment in March 2020," they said.

"These measures will prevent people who

have purchased RAT's at retail settings to on-sell them at extortionate prices, which is assessed at more than 120 percent more than the price for which they were purchased."

Penalties for failing to comply with the new requirements include up to five years imprisonment, a fine of up to A$66,000 ($47,384), or both.

The measures will be in place until at least February 17.

It comes amid ongoing supply shortfalls of RATs around the country, with individual kits being reportedly sold for up to A$50, Australia on Saturday reported more than 100,000 new locally-acquired Covid cases for the first time since the start of the pandemic.

Among the new cases were former Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, who announced his diagnosis one day after Treasurer Josh Frydenberg confirmed he tested positive.

"Like hundreds of thousands of other Australians I have tested positive for Covid.

PM rules out funding free rapid Covid tests

There have been widespread reports of price gouging on RATs amid supply shortfalls, while the wait times for results of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests have blown out to upwards of 72 hours.

Anthony Albanese, leader of the Opposition Labor Party, on Monday rampedup criticism of the government's response to Omicron outbreaks, claiming cases were going undiagnosed.

"With months and months to prepare, from a pandemic that has been going for two years, it is unbelievable the government has told people to not go and get tested, but to test themselves with a rapid antigen test that isn't available, and isn't affordable," he said.

"This is a public policy failure the like of which we haven't seen in this country before."

CANBERRA, Jan 3: Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison ruled out government funding free rapid coronavirus tests.

Morrison said that the federal government cannot afford to continue spending on preventing the spread of Covid-19 at the same rate it did in 2020 and 2021.

Australia on Monday morning reported a record of more than 37,000 locally-acquired Covid-19 infections, more than the country had in all of 2020, and eight deaths.

Australia's caseload and death toll currently stood at 499,987 and 2,266, respectively.

So far, 94.3 per cent of Australians aged 16 and over have received at least one vaccine dose and 91.3 per cent were fully inoculated.

Australian Treasurer announces post-lockdown job figures CANBERRA, Jan 3: Australia's labour market has bounced back from coronavirus lockdowns that affected more than half the population late in 2021, Treasurer Josh Frydenberg announced.

A total of 485,000 jobs were added to the labour market between September, when New South Wales (NSW), Victoria and the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) were in strict lockdowns, and November, according to recent official data.

As a result, the number of Australians who are employed is now 5.7 per cent higher than prior to the coronavirus pandemic.

He also mentioned the state will have a number of rapid antigen tests arriving soon, which will help alleviating some of the testing system's pressure.

2021 was Australia's coldest year in a decade

CANBERRA, Jan 6: 2021 became Australia's coldest year in almost a decade after the La Nina phenomenon caused wetter and cooler conditions across the country, the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) said.

The BoM said that summary and contextual information regarding

temperatures, rainfall, and significant weather for the 2021 calendar year shows no large parts of the country were experiencing rainfall deficits and drought conditions throughout the year.

For Australia, the mean temperature in 2021 was 0.56 degrees above the 1961 to 1990 climate reference period (average).

It has been the 19th warmest year since national records began in 1910, but also the coolest year since 2012.

"2021 was actually almost 0.4 degrees cooler than the average temperature on record from 2011 to 2020," said BoM senior climatologist Simon Grainger.

"It was actually much cooler in 2021 than the last decade."

The above-average rainfall was observed for many areas in Australian states, causing significant flooding that occurred across eastern Australia, particularly in March, November and December.

Grainger explained the phenomenon was majorly influenced by the impacts of a negative Indian Ocean Dipole, a period of warmer than usual temperatures in the western Indian Ocean, and La Nina, a period of cooling of the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean.

"The cooler and wetter conditions because of that meant we continued our recovery from the really extreme drought we had over the 2017-19 period."

No proposal to import milk from Australia at concessional rates The government also provides working capital interest subvention to cooperatives so that they can make and store milk powder when they need to as there is a cyclic market, and winter sees excess production, which gets traded in summer, the official said.

According to government statistics, as mentioned in the Annual Report 2020-21 of the Ministry, the total annual production is 198.40 tonnes (2019-2020). The per person per day availability of milk in India is 406 gms.

NEW DELHI, Jan 4: Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Parshottam Rupala denied farm leader Rakesh Tikait's allegation that there is a proposal to import milk from Australia.

"There are some organisations that are working only on the basis of protest-based politics and spreading misinformation.

Their only aim is to distract farmers. There is no proposal for any kind of concessions on import duty for dairy products under consideration at the Animal Husbandry and Dairy Department," Rupala tweeted in response to Tikait's allegations.

Two days ago, Tikait had tweeted: "Government is going to sign an agreement

next month with Australia allowing it to sell milk at Rs 20-22 per litre. This decision of the government to import milk will put a question mark on the very survival of the livestock holders of the country. Farmers will protest this move."

Rupala had also supplemented his counter with an additional tweet that said: "You would be happy to know India is the world's largest milk producer."

An official from the Ministry of Animal Husbandry and Dairying said: "Forget import.

We are milk surplus, we don't need to import milk, not from Australia, not from anywhere.

Instead, what we are looking at aggressively is to export to milk deficit countries."

Tikait has emerged as a prominent farm leader during the more than a year-long agitation protesting the contentious farm laws compelling the government to repeal those. When asked about the Minister's public denial, Tikait said: "This is a pending proposal for at least one year. The Minister himself is not aware of what happens in his ministry because these are things decided directly by the PMO. This proposal went on the backburner due to the corona pandemic.

But now, the government is going ahead with this agreement in February."

"Rupala may have tweeted whatever, but we know for sure this is happening in February. This company will sell milk for Rs 22 per litre in villages. The landless farmers, the small land holding farmers in villages will die. These people are dependent on milk from their livestock. The company will not buy from here, they will bring milk powder from outside. The consumers may benefit but the farmers will die," Tikait said.

The 16th official Queen's Baton Relay for the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games will be in India for four days between January 12 and 15, the organising committee of the showpiece event announced on Tuesday. The Queen's Baton Relay is a Games tradition that celebrates, connects and excites communities from across Commonwealth during the build-up to the Games.

The Baton will arrive back in England in July 2022.

The games are expected to take place from July 28 to August 8, 2022.

New coronavirus variant 'Deltacron' emerges in Cyprus

CYPRUS, Jan 9: A new coronavirus variant Deltacron has emerged in Cyprus which has a similar genetic background to the Delta variant, as well as some of the mutations from Omicron, and experts say that it is not something to be worried about at the moment, a media report said.

In total, 10 of the mutations from Omicron were found in the 25 samples taken in Cyprus. 11 of the samples came from people who were hospitalized due to the virus, while 14 came from the general population, reported Jerusalem Post citing Cyprus Mail. Dr. Leondios Kostrikis, the head of the laboratory of biotechnology and molecular virology at the University of Cyprus, said that the frequency of the mutation among

hospitalized patients was higher and could point to a correlation between the new variant and hospitalizations.

Kostrikis also emphasized that the variant has a similar genetic background to the Delta variant, as well as some of the mutations from Omicron.

The new variant was not something to worry about at the moment, said Cyprus's Health Minister Michalis Hadjipandelas.

The minister also expressed pride in discovering the new variant.

Hadjipandelas said the ground-breaking research and findings of Dr. Kostrikis' team make us proud of our scientists. The minister also underlined that this research

puts Cyprus on the international map when it comes to health matters, according to Jerusalem Post.

So far, the scientific name of the new variant has not been announced.

COLOMBO, Jan 4: Although the Sri Lankan tourism sector is still struggling due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the island nation received the highest number of foreign tourists in December 2021, with majority of the holidaymakers from India.

Despite shutting of borders in the wake of the health crisis for several months, a total of 194,495 tourists arrived in the island nation, with over one-fourth of them from India, said the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA).

The SLTDA said that India topped the list with 56,268 tourists, followed by Russia (16,268) and the UK (16,646), Germany (12,442), Ukraine (7,037), France (6,549), the US (6,124), Kazakhstan (5,754), Canada (5,079) and China (2,417).

After witnessing two Covid-19 waves, Sri Lanka's tourism was further ravaged by the third wave of the pandemic in April 2021.

Israel approves 4th booster shot for adults at high risk

TEL AVIV, Dec 31: The Israeli Ministry of Health announced that it has approved the administration of the fourth booster shot against Covid-19 for adults at high risk.

Late Thursday night, Nachman Ash, the Ministry's Director General, approved the fourth shot for those with suppressed immune systems, following recommendation from a panel of experts last week.

The people at high risk include those who have had a heart, lung, kidney or liver transplant, or suffer rheumatological or autoimmune diseases, cancers, multiple sclerosis and more.

However, the panel's recommendation to give the fourth shot to the entire elderly population over the age of 60 has not yet been approved.

People with suppressed immune systems are at the highest risk, as they do not develop a serological response after receiving three vaccine doses, the Ministry explained.

The fourth dose will be administered under the condition that at least four months have passed since the third shot was given, and for those aged 18 and over only.

The Ministry also announced new restrictions due to the fast spread of the

Omicron variant which has triggered the ongoing fifth wave of the pandemic in Israel, including wearing a face mask outdoors at a gathering of over 50 people.

As of Friday, Israel has reported a total of 1,380,053 Covid-19 cases and 8,243 deaths.

UK keen to ease immigration rules for Indians in exchange for trade access

NEW DELHI, Jan 2: UK Ministers are keen to ease immigration restrictions in a bid to make it easier for thousands of Indian citizens to live and work in the country as part of the forthcoming trade talks.

The potential offer will be under discussion when International Trade Secretary, Anne-Marie Trevelyan travels to Delhi this month, reports the Times UK. Relaxing immigration rules for Indian citizens is a key demand from Delhi.

Trevelyan is said to have the backing of the foreign secretary, Liz Truss, who is keen to curb China's growing influence in the region. However, they are likely to meet strong resistance from Some Secretary Priti Patel, who opposes the offer.

According to the Times UK, visa relaxation options under consideration include a scheme similar to one agreed with Australia which would allow young Indians the right to live and work in the UK for up to three years.

Another would be to cut visa fees for students and allow them to stay in Britain for a period of time after they graduate.

Visa fees for work and tourism, which can cost up to 1,400 pounds, could also be reduced as a

sweetener.

UK Ministers believe a trade deal with Delhi would provide British businesses with a head start in what is predicted to be the world's third-largest economy by 2050.

It could also see Britain jump ahead as India does not have bilateral trade deals with either the US or the European Union.

Ministers are said to be in agreement that a "generous" offer on visas could be the price for such a deal.

One government figure told the Times: "The tech and digital space in India is still hugely protectionist and if we could open up even a slither of access it would put us ahead of the game."

Now a chatbot to help reduce eating disorders

NEW YORK, Jan 7: US researchers have developed a chatbot that may help reduce the likelihood a person develops an eating disorder.

The bot helped women at a high risk for an eating disorder to reduce their concern over body weight and shape - a factor that contributes to their risk.

According to Ellen FitzsimmonsCraft, Assistant Professor of psychiatry at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, digital prevention programmes could be more effective when guided by a human moderator.

The team developed a chatbot that offered "some aspects of moderation in an automated format", Fitzsimmons-Craft was quoted as saying.

Participants in the study could use the chatbot through texts or through Facebook Messenger.

The study recruited female participants through online ads, fliers, and the national eating disorder association online eating disorder screening test.

Women who did not have an active eating disorder but had risk factors for one, like negative body image or excessive concern about their weight, were randomly assigned to either engage with the chatbot or sit on a waitlist.

The chatbot offered eight conversations about topics around body image and healthy eating, and women who used the bot were encouraged to have two of the conversations each week.

At three- and six-month check-ins, women who talked to the chatbot had a bigger drop in concerns on a survey about their weight and body shape - a major risk factor for developing an eating disorder - than women in the waitlist group, the report said.

The study, published in the International Journal of Eating Disorders, also found some indication that women in the chatbot group were less likely to have developed a clinical eating disorder by the end of the six months than women in the waitlist group.

"This could have a great public health impact if we can continue to find ways to disseminate it widely," Fitzsimmons-Craft said.

This is one of the first studies testing the effectiveness of chatbots in healthcare, even though they're widely used in medical settings to assist with everything from Covid-19 symptom screening to therapy, the report said.

Getting married in Australia Temporary modified arrangements relating to witnessing of the NOIM form The Marriage Act 1961 has been temporarily modified due to COVID-19, to enable an authorised witness to remotely witness the signing of the Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM). This is a temporary response to assist parties to the marriage meet the notification requirements given the continuing impact of the COVID pandemic.

The Coronavirus Economic Response Package which modifies the Act commenced operation on 21 December 2021, and is the date from when authorised celebrants can begin witnessing signatures remotely.

This arrangement will be in place until 31 December 2022, when the relevant legislative instrument will be repealed.

Under the Determination, an authorised witness may sign in the ‘Signature of witness box’ on page 4 of the NOIM, if they have observed the party signing the NOIM, whether or not by means of a facility that enables audio and visual communication between persons in different places.

rahmastra Part One: Shiva motion poster was revealed on the 9th of December, the release date was also announced worldwide, being the 9th of September, 2022. G’day India spoke to director Ayan Mukherjee about the trilogy, which in every essence is a true Superhero film.

The story is set in present times where Shiva, a young man with superpowers who travels 3000 years back to the pre-Mahabharata era to learn about weapons like Brahmastra in order to fulfil a mission in the present time.

Excerpts from the interview with the director of Brahmastra, Ayan Mukherjee: Brahmastra is your dream project.

Can you share with us why?

A: In the beginning, you’re kind of chasing your inspirations and your passion without necessarily even fully being able to articulate it. ‘It's like falling in love’ .You just know when you fall for an idea, you feel it to go behind it and to believe in it.

But I really felt that the idea of the Master of It when it was born, what I could achieve with Brahmastra I don't think such a big idea will ever come to me again, In my life. It felt like

it yes, there are the normal ideas and then you have an idea where you're like, listen, the universe has just dropped this on me, and this is going to be the big idea of my life. I wanted to do a cinematic spectacle, use technology, visual effects to kind of tell a story on the big screen, the way Hollywood is selling some of their stories.

I was inspired by the likes of Harry Potter and Lord of the rings fantasy. The adaptation from book to screen was rather very spectacular. I was chasing my dream touching upon Indian spirituality, drawing from ancient India, Indian mythology, sort of thinking about the concept of energies, my own faith.

It has been ten years since my last film and so, I genuinely think this is the biggest thing that I will do in my life.

Almost close to the finish line now, how do you feel in short, not long to go?

A: I feel very excited. I feel very hopeful. I feel like I'm really, really like looking forward to sharing the film with people. I hope that people really connect with it in the way in which I hope and perceive it. Because if things

aligned the way that I hope I really think it could be in fact a new chapter in Indian filmmaking. It would be very dynamic, very interesting and that we could be very proud of it as it's Made in India.

So, I feel very excited. Beautiful.

Is India and the world ready for a superhero film from India of the global standards?

A: To be very honest my film will make people use the word superhero but in its truest essence.

The concept of ‘superhero’ is a slightly western concept in its makeup.

In Brahmastra, the master is still a very Indian, and Shiva’s character is not really a superhero in the film is more like a modern version of a deva from India, someone born with a Shakti (power) within him and it's his journey, his story. It is the character’s saga, what happens to him, in his life and I think the world is ready and India is definitely ready to embrace this film.

I think from the day that we announced Brahmastra I felt, one has their own sense of the film that they make; and I had a sense

that this is a film that people are very excited about. Especially when the actors used to tell me that they would go for interviews and journalists constantly ask them what is this film, Brahmastra? Intrigued by the title and the newness of it all. So, I definitely feel India is ready and I hope the west is ready. I think we collectively need to talk about the film to garner interest from the west and that is one of the reasons why we've begun to talk about the film nine months away from release.

Wake Up Sid is very, very different to Brahmastra. Has Ayan found his calling?

A: The path of life is to keep seeking.

I would say, I’m more interested in a growth mindset than a person who feels like I have reached my potential. I think I have evolved a lot since Wake Up Sid and right now I am in a very different place in my life. But I think the evolution of me as a person will still continue until I am enlightened.

This is your third film, it’s a numerology again three films releasing on the 9th of September 2022. You are number six, all are a group of three. Is there numerology happening behind this?

A: The numerology thing started with the release date. It was never conscious.

But I realized seven years after making a film that is filming, I must have some magic with 369. The film is a trilogy and as we know the holy three of Hindu philosophy is Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh.

Well! Brahmastra is broken into three pieces.

You're right, I'm a number six and the date came up naturally was the 9th of September 2022, which is the year of six. So now, I have found some magic in this number. I think from now to release, I'm going to really enjoy it. But as you know, it's fine.

and above all, blessing to harness the power and Veldt from the ancient Indian mythology and connect its relevance. In today's time through a film could you be a pioneer in doing it right?

A: I really hope that that I have done justice to the pride we all feel in our ancient culture because sometimes we just take it a little bit for granted.

We have such rich philosophy like as a young person, as a student of life myself, I feel like there is just infinite wisdom in India that is yet still to be discovered. I hope you know that because I belong to India's youth, I touched upon some of these themes to connect with the youth of today in a very natural way. Also, to get them to celebrate and investigate a little more into not just ancient India and what we stand for.

How has the pandemic affected the making and the release of the film?

A: It's very sad to say anything good about it because it's a pandemic. You know, people have lost lives and it's just been very sad, but to be honest, for Brahmastra interestingly the whole conversation or the film has been about a higher power. Honestly and therefore I've always believed that whatever's happening with Brahmastra is happening for a reason. We got time that it was such a big project to be making that before the pandemic. It had been two years of sleepless nights and the space the pandemic gave us actually helped me to work better on the film.

So, we just kept chugging through the pandemic.

People have a short attention span. Is it overkill to market the film nine months before release or is it a history in the making?

A: I'd like to believe us as making history and I'd like to believe there are certain things that the Western world tends to do as well. We should learn from it and build a

global film industry, which is very powerful. It's how every big Hollywood tent pole goes about setting themselves up and see themselves in the consciousness of people for a long period of time.

We have a very wide Indian community spread out all over the world and hope we have started early so our reach on the film will be much deeper than the average film does its marketing in a month or two months.

If Ayan was not a filmmaker or a storyteller, what else would he be?

A: I often think I should have been academic, in a university somewhere in the West, like NASA or in Israel and then come back to India to do something for the country. I was more interested in science than arts.

What is your perception of Australia?

A: Australia is a land of great natural beauty where people live or create quality of life I've never visited, dying to visit because I love nature and all the outdoor sports.

I'm really keen to explore Australia. Many Hollywood films are working in big studios in Australia now. There are some great facilities for shooting these big visual effects films in Australia, so touchwood it would be amazing if we can get there.

As we wrap up our interview with Ayan Mukherjee, we wait in anticipation for the release and look forward to all the motion posters yet to be released of Brahmastra. ‘Come Fall in Love - The DDLJ Musical’ Director Aditya Chopra to Make His Broadway Debut with His Worldwide Blockbuster, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ)

L

eading Indian film-maker Aditya Chopra is set to make his Broadway directorial debut with his recordsetting worldwide blockbuster, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ).

The Chairman and Managing Director of India’s biggest film studio Yash Raj Films, Aditya Chopra has directed and produced some of the biggest blockbusters in the history of Indian cinema. His debut feature, the historic romantic film 'Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge', released in 1995, is still running in theatres. Popularly called DDLJ, it is one of the highest-grossing movies in the history of Indian cinema and the biggest IP of the country’s rich and diverse movie industry.

After 26 years, Aditya Chopra is set to direct DDLJ again but this time on Broadway. Aditya has been working on this passion project for the past three years and has brought together a stellar, extremely diverse team, comprising some of the best talents of Broadway and India.

Aditya Chopra’s Note on His Broadway Directorial: Summer 1985. I was 14 and on a holiday in London. My parents took my brother and me for our first musical theatre experience.

The lights dimmed, the curtains lifted and what unfolded in the next 3 hours left me speechless and stunned. Until then, I was a kid who was an avid movie watcher and what I loved the most was big screen Indian blockbusters. But that day, what I saw on stage blew my mind. I couldn’t believe that this kind of spectacle could be created live on stage. But the most significant aspect that resonated with me was how similar musical theatre was to our Indian films. It was just not the fact that both use songs to tell the story; it was the feeling they evoked. The burst of colours, the heightened drama, the

passionate singing, the unabashed dancing, a classic story, a happy end. It filled me with the same joy and emotions that a good Indian film does. I realised then that worlds apart, languages apart, western musical theatre and Indian films are two long lost lovers separated in time.

Autumn 2021… I’m embarking on my most ambitious project to date. Twenty-six years back I started my career with a film called Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ, what it is more famously known as). The film created history and changed my life and many others forever. But what many don’t know is that I never intended to make DDLJ in Hindi. As a 23-year-old young man greatly influenced

by Hollywood and American pop culture, I thought I would make a couple of Indian films and then I would be off to Hollywood and make DDLJ for a worldwide English-speaking audience with Tom Cruise as my leading man. That obviously didn’t happen. DDLJ was released in 1995 and became the longestrunning film in Indian cinema. It gave me my identity and kickstarted an amazing journey for which I’ll always be grateful.

Twenty-six years later I’m going back to my original vision of the story of DDLJ, a love story of an American boy and an Indian girl, a love story of two cultures…two worlds.

But this time the medium is not cinema but theatre. I will be directing DDLJ all over again but this time as an English language Broadway Musical for a worldwide audience.

I’m terribly nervous and incredibly excited. I’m a hardcore cinema guy, I have never done theatre in my life and here I am trying to pull off the craziest ambition of my life. But what is giving me confidence is the fantastic team that I have. Each one of them are masters of their field and their brilliance and expertise will make this a fantastic show.

The past three years as we have developed this passion project, I have learned so much from them and discovered the unbelievable talent that the Broadway community has. I feel 23 again, the same age I was when I directed DDLJ. I’m once again a student, each one of my team members is more experienced than me in the world of theatre, I’m the rookie and I’m loving every moment of it. I’m all set to learn, explore, create and enjoy

with these wonderful theatre artists and the magical world of Broadway Musicals. Generations to come will celebrate his life and legacy for redefining the meaning of humanity and spirituality WHO WAS PRAMUKH SWAMI MAHARAJ? Revered as a unique and rare holy soul of India, HH Pramukh Swami Maharaj was the universally loved and respected spiritual leader of BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha. Born on December 7, 1921, in Chansad, Gujarat, India, he grew up to be the fifth spiritual successor of Bhagwan Swaminarayan.

At 18, he renounced the world, embracing the strict ascetic life of a Swaminarayan Sadhu, and was named Narayanswarupdas Swami. In 1950, his guru, Shastriji Maharaj, recognized his innate spirituality and appointed him as the president (Pramukh) of BAPS, hence he was known as ‘Pramukh Swami’. Upon the firm foundations laid by his gurus, he spread the universal messages and activities of BAPS worldwide.

He travelled in India and abroad to strengthen morality and spirituality, inspiring people through personal counselling, letters or telephone. He built over 1,100 temples in India, North America, UK, Europe, Africa, Australia, New Zealand, and the Middle East, which serve as perennial sources of spiritual inspiration, social harmony, and humanitarian services. Moreover, he created the magnificent Swaminarayan Akshardham Mahamandirs in Gandhinagar and New Delhi, which enlighten millions of visitors on India’s ancient culture, traditions, and values. Caveat to protect the interest in the property BY GURPAL SINGH

A

caveat means and implies a statutory inunction or a restraint which prevents the registration of a particular dealing with the real property which could affect the interest and ownership of the property in the existing format. The caveat also acts as a warning and a formal notice to the public at large that the land or the property in question carries a particular interest in the estate or the property at the behest of the person who lodged the caveat. It cautions the prospective interest bearer to be cautioned and beware of the priority interest existing in the property.

Interestingly, a lodgement of a caveat on the property effectively prevents the registration of further dealings including the alteration of an interest on the title of the property unless the caveat is formally withdrawn by the caveator; or the caveat lapses by time; or the caveator consents to a third-party registration that deals with the property’s title; or such a caveat is removed by order of the court.

A caveat cannot be lodged at a free discretion but only as per the scope of the Transfer of Land Act 1958 (Vic) to include a registered or equitable mortgage; or transfer; or purchase under an agreement for sale; or a tenant in certain circumstances; or a registered proprietor; or contractual rights.

Lodgement of a caveat without a reasonable cause is a serious matter. In case it is determined (by the court) that the caveat was lodged incorrectly, the caveat will be removed and compensation to a person suffering a financial loss because of such a wrong caveat shall also be allowed.

The caveat can be removed in two different manners. One way is to file an

application with the Registrar of Titles in writing. The application to remove the caveat is required to be supported by a certificate from an Australian Legal Practitioner who must form an opinion that the caveator does not have the estate or interest claimed by the caveator. Once the notice for removal of the caveat is received, the Registrar must give a notice to the caveator that the caveat will lapses on a day specified in the notice unless in the meantime, the caveator abandons the application by providing the Registrar with written notice; or provides the Registrar with a written notice indicating that the court proceedings are no foot to substantiate the caveator’s claim. The caveat will lapse if the caveator does not commence a proceeding to substantiate the claim or in case the caveator commence the proceedings, but the court rejects the claim or proceedings are otherwise discontinued, withdrawn, or struck out.

The person adversely affected by the lodgement of caveat on the property is entitled to bring proceedings in the Victorian Supreme Court against the caveator and insist that the caveat was wrongly lodged and be removed. In such a situation where proceedings are

initiated in the Supreme Court, the caveator carries the burden of establishment as to the validity and correctness to the caveat on the property. The caveator is required to establish that the balance of convenience and the legality of the interest in the estate or the property requires the lodgement of caveat to continue. The Supreme Court will weigh the various factors and the claims of varying parties to establish the prima facie interest of the caveator in the property. Interestingly, the assessment is real and in the process of such assessment, the parties are required to establish their claim and counterclaim. As is apparent, if the caveat is allowed to remain on the title of the property, the same would frustrate the plans to make any changes in the title and interest of the property. It would delay the settlement of the sale of the land or the property. In normal practice, the court seeks an undertaking from the caveator to pay compensation to any affected person by the operation of the order to maintain the caveat.

There is a common misconception that the builders/contractors are entitled to lodge a caveat over the property for their unpaid invoices and claim an interest in the property because of the work. Cautiously, as the law stands, a builder/contractor is not entitled to claim an interest in any land for the purposes of transfer of the land act. The application of Domestic Building Contracts Act specifically bars the lodgement of caveat merely for the work executed on the property.

W

here to begin? Let's start with the positives, Indian Australian community in Australia is one of the highly educated, well-employed, and prosperous communities. More than 700,000 Australia's Indian diaspora, comprising both Australians of Indian origin and Indians residing in Australia, makes a significant contribution to Australia's social, cultural, and economic spectrum. Behind the British, they are the second-highest taxpaying diaspora and one of the lowest when it comes to unlawful activities.

Australia Day on 26th January has special significance for Indian Australians as it is India's Republic Day as well. When it comes to celebrations, our community beats any competition. As the community grows in a land away from their relatives and friends, new friendships are formed, friends become the new family unit.

It is a level playing field, and everyone gets a fair chance to succeed in their dreams and ambitions. As we grow bigger, our aspirations grow with us and with it sometimes comes unwanted disruptions.

The ideologies and divisional tactics time and again used back home by the political masters are brought here by some to promote themselves as champions of nonexistent causes in Australia.

They go as far as creating false narratives and even imaginary case studies

to propagate hatred about our community, be it religion, language or even India as an identity. These so-called self-proclaimed activists thrive on divisions among the community, portraying one against the other to represent on boards or satisfy their overseas political masters and lobby groups.

As we know, registering organisations is relatively easy for the benefit of the community, but this is used by many to register numerous organisations to spread their agendas and mask their individual identities in the name of community groups or even as community media. It's not hard to identify these as they eventually come out from their hideouts to self-promote.

It's alarming to see some groups aligned with overseas lobby groups have managed to influence political parties in Australia to do their campaigns. Recently, a political party in New South Wales openly targeted religious minorities from Indian backgrounds in the Parliament. These activities are only the beginning, and the worst is yet to come unless we as a community come together and show them our unity in standing against these negative propagandas and outwardly rejecting anyone who supports them.

Social media is often widely used to spread and cause division, at times with controversial, click-bait or negative stories.

Many were using this as a tool to target or intimidate the community members personally or their businesses. Thankfully the Government has recently introduced some strict legislation to protect the community from these activities in social media.

We have a lot to achieve; many of our community members are slowly breaking the glass ceiling; remember, the glass ceiling for us is not just made of regular glass but a thick, unbreakable one. It takes the whole community to help push one of us to go forward, be it in business, recognition or politics. Our strength is not our numbers, not our wealth, not our education, not our disciplined lifestyle. Yes, they all are the attributes that keep us in high stead, but our strength is our unity. In the words of Rabindranath Tagore, "By plucking her petals, you do not gather the beauty of the flower." Let us not pluck the petals of our community flower; instead, let's help make a garland with it!

As the new year begins, our aspirations and dreams are a step closer than last year.

We need to remember and reassure that we are each other's pathway, and we are each other's harvest! Happy New Year!

6 REASONS WHY NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS DON’T STICK As we approach the end of the year, we may feel more aware or confused, more focused or distracted, more poised or ruffled, more driven or more settled, more ambitious or content - all of this is fine. Whatever our mood, we are preoccupied with working out a list of new year resolutions and how to keep them this time.

So, despite our best intentions, why is it so difficult to stick to resolutions? It doesn’t matter if the resolution is to start a new habit or to give up an addiction; it all comes down to consistency and dedication.

Most people blame their failure to fulfill resolutions on a lack of time, resources, or motivation, or a loss of zeal after starting.

Only about 16 percent of people are able to follow their resolutions, according to research.

The majority give up within one to six weeks of starting, and many of these resolutions are repeated year after year.

There are many reasons why most New Year resolutions don’t stick. The main question is: What can be done about this?

Let’s take a closer look at the 6 main reasons: Setting unrealistic resolutions A resolution is about what you would like to do rather than what you ‘should’ do. People either establish excessively difficult objectives that quickly become unreachable, or they set relatively easy goals that they quickly become bored with. It’s critical to review your resolutions to see if they’re achievable. Are they quantifiable? Are they constrained by time? Are they specific in nature? Are they in line with your goals? Is it possible to break them down into smaller chunks? Is it possible to achieve them within the time frame you’ve set? Remember that in order to keep a resolve, you must change your behaviour, so make sure your goals are reasonable.

Lack of accountability Working with a coach, mentor, or accountability partner guarantees that the proper energy and drive are present to help you be more, accomplish more, and have more. Because success is a science, we can be sure that if we follow the steps, we will achieve our goals. Avoid people who sap your energy when choosing an accountability partner, and instead work with people that elevate and encourage you, especially when you’re feeling down.

No tracking/review A weekly or fortnightly review allows you to keep track of your progress and turn excuses into opportunities. What gets measured gets done, and what gets done can be improved and made a habit with the help of a good tracking system. Many of the apparent barriers

are based on assumptions, inferences, judgments, overthinking, and previous points of reference. A track record of accomplishments aids in the development of resolution consistency.

Lack of planning Great planning is always required for a good implementation. It is more realistic if you plan the action steps around the resolution, break them down into smaller pieces, and schedule them on the calendar. ast Gippsland, known for its coastal wilderness, in Victoria is a gem of hidden beaches, beautiful topography and offers unique hiking adventures.

Ripped away by the terrific bush fires in 2019, parts of East Gippsland like Mallacoota and Genoa are slowly bouncing back to life and the best way they can is to add more tourism from Victorian like us.

So, today I am going to take you virtually to 4 such unique and hidden beaches in East Gippsland which you never knew existed at all.

1) Salmon Rocks: Cape Conran: Perched just an hour and a half from Marlo town in Eat Gippsland, this Coastal wilderness region screams of pristine clear water, rugged beaches.

The Salmon rocks is located on the Western Cape Road of the Marlo highway; it’s tucked away in nature so that it remains hidden from the hustle of everyday life.

The water is crystal clear, and the Salmon rocks are easy to climb by everyone, regardless to say this beach is just perfect for

travelling with kids too.

Cape Conran is located appx 4.5 hours from Melbourne CBD and can only be accessed by self-driven car.

You can happily spend the whole day here and the coastal walk /bike ride is also an alternative for a family with kids.

There is no cafes/food around, so the nearest available place would be to drive back to Marlo, which is an hour and a half from here, so make sure you carry ample food for the trip.

As a wanderlust seeker, this beach ranks number 1 on my list in East Gippsland.

2) Secret Beach: Tucked away in nature’s lap, Secret Beach does stand up to its name. It's hidden away in the national park and one must walk into the undefined path to find a way out into the beach.

But mark my words, your efforts won’t be wasted as you will have this entire beach to yourself when you find your way into this paradise.

This beach is rough and often exposed to high tide and is an ideal destination for summer with kids too.

The best way to navigate is by taking your own car only. Mallacoota is a small town and navigating here is easy. There is no way you will get lost here. Mallacoota is located 7 hours from Melbourne CBD. 3) Pebble Beach: Another exotic beach in Mallacoota is the Pebble beach, located 1 km walk away from the Secret beach, this place screams coastal wilderness too.

You will find a lot of black shells floating on the rocks here so make sure you don’t hurt or pick them from where they are. These black shells are native to this coastal wilderness in East Gippsland.

Not an ideal beach to swim but a must-see place for adventure seekers. It is ideal for kids to stroll along and discover native life out here.

4) Betka Beach: Last but not least, though I mention this beach on 4, Betka beach is the best beach for families. The water is warm and stable with not much tide, making swimming easy and safe.

Most of the time, the water recedes, creating small pools with warm water, which is just perfect for families to relax, and there’s also a place to change and wash off.

APPLE’S IPHONE 15 PRO MIGHT COME WITHOUT SIM CARD SLOT Apple had unveiled the iPhone 13 line-up in September, and even though the iPhone 14 is still months away from its launch but rumours around the iPhone 15 have already started surfacing on the internet.

According to GSM Arena, the latest rumours claim Apple will ditch the physical SIM card slot beginning with the iPhone 15 series in 2023. Word comes from a Brazilian publication Blog, which says that the 2023’s Pro models (tentatively called iPhone 15 Pro) will not have physical SIM card slots and will rely entirely on eSIM technology for connectivity.

The source also claimed that these iPhones will come with dual e-SIM support, allowing the users to have two lines simultaneously. However, it’s unclear if the non-Pro models will also depend entirely on eSIM tech or continue to use physical SIM card slots.

Apple planning to ditch the SIM card slot is hardly a surprise since the

tech giant is said to eventually move to a portless iPhone and removing the SIM card slot looks like the first step in that direction.

However, even if Apple does launch an iPhone without a SIM card slot, the company might still offer a version with a physical SIM slot in countries

where eSIM service is unavailable.

As per GSM Arena, then again, 2023 is a long time to go, and it’s best to wait for this information to be corroborated by reliable industry sources before considering it final.

PIXEL WATCH MAY COME WITH EXYNOS SOC, NEW GOOGLE ASSISTANT

While we are yet to get an official announcement, several leaks that have recently surfaced strongly hint at the arrival of a Google Pixel Watch.

And now, we have fresh rumours to add to the chatter surrounding the first Pixel-branded smartwatch.

A recent report from 9to5Google found mentions of “PIXEL_ EXPERIENCE_WATCH” which not only solidifies the case for the smartwatch to bear the Pixel name but also suggests that a Pixel smartwatch would receive Wear OS features

exclusive to the new wearable. Pixel name and features aside, Wear OS 3 will receive the most recent update to Google Assistant that will be able to understand voice queries and perform tasks while offline. This ability is currently only reserved for select Pixel smartphones.

The report mentions that an Exynos (Samsung-made) SoC for the Pixel Watch is highly likely considering the possibility of the on-device speech processing with updated Google Assistant. The wearable’s SoC could either be an Exynos-branded one or Tensor-branded, but either one would still be made by Samsung.

It’s still too early to tell if any of the above will come true. The Google Pixel Watch is expected sometime in 2022, but there’s no solid timeline on when that may be.

Earlier this month, leaked marketing images of the Google Pixel Watch showed a round watch body and a low-profile touch screen with a rounded edge all the way around.

Telegram is ending 2021 with a bang! The popular messaging platform has updated its app with a bunch of cool, new features for both Android and iOS. As per GSM Arena, ‘Reactions’ are now part of the app - and if you’ve ever used Facebook Messenger, you know how these work. The difference is that in Telegram you press and hold on iOS for the reaction emoji picker and tap once on Android. On both platforms, double-tapping a message sends a quick thumbs-up reaction.

Best time to make your investment decisions A new study has found that if you are a night owl, making your investment decisions first thing in the morning might be a bad idea.

The research has been published in the ‘Journal of Business Venturing’. The study showed time-based factors, like time of day and whether you’re a morning or evening person, can influence investment decisions and your ability to evaluate whether a startup will be successful.

“Early-stage investments -- when not a lot is typically known about a company and the time to make a decision is compressed -- can be risky with high failure rates,” said Jeff Gish, assistant professor of management at UCF and a co-author of the story.

“Trying to pick a winner is difficult enough under those circumstances, but we’ve also learned that when you make those decisions can have a significant impact on whether they turn out to be successful,” he added.

Individuals have an internal clock called circadian rhythm that regulates our alertness and awake-sleep cycles. In general, individuals tend to fall into three general types with respect to what time of day they are more awake and alert in a 24hour cycle. Those with a circadian process shifted earlier in the day are known as larks, while owls are more alert later in the day. The third group of individuals is the intermediate.

“What we found was when individuals evaluated an investment opportunity at a time that conflicted with their body’s natural internal clock -- for example, a morning person or lark making a decision late in the day or evening -- they tended to make poor choices,” said Cristiano Guarana, assistant professor of management and entrepreneurship at the IU Kelley School of Business and a co-author.

“This tension may not be recognized by those making the investment decision and over time could result in substantial losses for people who, on average, possess much less investment knowledge than angel investors and venture capitalists,” Guarana added.

Gish and Guarana each have studied

how lack of sleep affects cognitive skills needed to be successful in evaluating ideas and making business decisions. Gish has founded multiple businesses and now invests in others’ entrepreneurial ventures.

The three-part study looked at earlystage investment decisions via equity crowdfunding where non-professional investors can invest a relatively small amount for an ownership stake in a startup. Study participants were recruited from social media accounts for active followers of several leading equity crowdfunding platforms in the U.S. -- such as Wefunder, Fundable, and EquityNet -- and surveyed about whether they were a morning versus an evening person, their investment experience and time zone information.

Participants were then asked to complete a decision-making task at an assigned time; for example, if they had had $1,000 to invest, how much would they allocate to certain companies? The companies being evaluated were based on actual investment opportunities, including several desirable opportunities that had performed well and several undesirable opportunities that had performed poorly.

Participants also were asked to report their sleep quantity and crowdfunding experience.

The study showed that owl investors invested more than lark investors in an unsuccessful venture in the morning, while lark investors invested more than owl investors in an unsuccessful venture in the evening. The same types of errors occur, in the opposite direction, with successful ventures.

Nausea, loss of appetite may be new symptoms of Omicron While the Omicron variant is considered to be “mild”, the new symptoms include nausea and loss of appetite, according to a Zoe Covid app study.

The study, published in the European Journal of Nutrition, said that obesity is a significant risk factor for developing gestational diabetes mellitus and an increasing number of pregnant women are overweight or obese.

“Our research results show that following a healthy diet in early pregnancy reduces the risk of gestational diabetes, says first author,” said researcher Lotta Pajunen from the Institute of Biomedicine at the University of Turku (Finland).

According to the research, dietary habits have an impact on both obesity and the onset of gestational diabetes mellitus.

For the study, the team included 351 overweight or obese women to examine the connection between dietary intake and onset of gestational diabetes.

Remote learning may up depression, anxiety in older children If your older child is learning remotely, it may increase the risk of depression in them as a new study suggests that higher levels of electronic learning time is associated with increased levels of depression and anxiety.

The study indicated that in older children and youth, higher levels of TV or digital media time were associated with higher levels of depression, anxiety, and inattention; higher levels of video game time were associated with higher levels of depression, irritability, inattention, and hyperactivity.

“Our findings may help inform public health guidelines that consider different forms of screen use in prevention of mental health disorders in children and youth during the pandemic,” said researchers, including Xuedi Li from the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto.

For the study, published in the journal JAMA Network Open, the team included 2,026 children to determine whether specific forms of screen use were associated with symptoms of depression, anxiety, conduct problems, irritability, hyperactivity and inattention in

children and youth during Covid-19.

A longitudinal cohort study with repeated measures of exposures and outcomes was conducted in children and youth aged 2 to 18 years in Ontario, Canada, between May 2020 and April 2021 across 4 cohorts of children or youth: 2 community cohorts and 2 clinically referred cohorts.

Parents were asked to complete

repeated questionnaires about their children’s health behaviours and mental health symptoms during Covid-19.

The research also suggests that policy intervention as well as evidence-informed social supports are needed to promote healthful screen use and mental health in children and youth during the pandemic and beyond.

SCIENTISTS DEVELOPING CHEWING GUM THAT COULD REDUCE SARS-COV-2 TRANSMISSION A chewing gum laced with a plant-grown protein serves as a “trap” for the SARSCoV-2 virus, reducing viral load in saliva and potentially tamping down transmission, finds a new study.

Incubating samples obtained from nasopharyngeal swabs from Covid-positive patients with the gum, they showed that the ACE2 present could neutralise SARS-CoV-2 viruses.

The researchers exposed saliva samples from Covid-19 patients to the ACE2 gum and found that levels of viral RNA fell so dramatically to be almost undetectable, indicates the study published in the journal Molecular Therapy.

Those initial investigations were followed by others, in which viruses, less-pathogenic than SARS-CoV-2, were modified to express the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein.

“SARS-CoV-2 replicates in the salivary glands, and we know that when someone d sneezes, coughs, or speaks some of that virus can be expelled and reach others,” said researcher Henry Daniell from the University of Pennsylvania in the US. “This gum offers an opportunity to neutralise the virus in the saliva, giving us a simple way to possibly cut down on a source of disease transmission,” Daniell added.

The team observed that the gum largely prevented the viruses or viral particles from entering cells, either by blocking the ACE2 receptor on the cells or by binding directly to the spike protein.

To test the chewing gum, the team grew angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) in plants, paired with another compound that enables the protein to cross mucosal barriers and facilitates binding, and incorporated the resulting plant material into cinnamon-flavoured gum tablets.

The research team is currently working toward obtaining permission to conduct a clinical trial to evaluate whether the approach is safe and effective when tested in people infected with SARS-CoV-2.

Overactive bladder, urinary incontinence worsens with age in women

Researchers have found that postmenopausal women, aged between 45 to 54 years, are more likely to have overactive bladder (OAB) syndrome and obesity.

urinary incontinence symptoms, however, were shown to increase as a result of a high body mass index and the number of times a woman has given birth.

The research has been published in the ‘Menopause Journal’. Multiple births put a woman at greater risk for stress urinary incontinence (SUI). Urinary incontinence symptoms are common in women and typically worsen as women age. In the United States, the prevalence of urinary incontinence is 17.1 per cent in women aged 20 years or older and 38 per cent in women aged 60 years and older.

Other factors studied included smoking status, history of diabetes, hysterectomy, and the use of hormone therapy. The researchers suggested that additional studies should be conducted to consider the association between time since menopause and OAB symptoms in the perimenopause period.

There are two main types of urinary incontinence -- urinary urge incontinence (UUI) and SUI. Urinary urge incontinence is defined as the involuntary loss of urine associated with the urge to urinate. Stress urinary incontinence, in contrast, is the involuntary loss of urine because of effort or physical exertion, including sporting activities, sneezing, and coughing. Of the two, women are more likely to be diagnosed with SUI. Overactive bladder syndrome is characterized by urinary urgency and is usually accompanied by increased daytime frequency and/or nocturia, with urinary incontinence.

Multiple studies have been conducted on these urinary issues that can adversely affect a woman’s quality of life. However, this is the largest known study, with data from more than 12,000 women. The goal of this new study was to investigate the prevalence and factors associated with urinary symptoms.

Although the study showed a significant association of OAB in women aged 45 to 54 years and postmenopausal status, it also demonstrated that SUI symptoms may likely become less frequent after menopause. Stress

“This study underscores how common urinary incontinence is in women, with nearly one in five Japanese women reporting urinary incontinence related to OAB or SUI in the last month. Midlife women were particularly affected by SUI (18.2 per cent in women aged 50 to 54 years). Given the significant negative effect on the quality of life and the presence of effective strategies for management of these burdensome symptoms, clinicians should routinely ask women about urinary incontinence,” said Dr Stephanie Faubion, NAMS medical director.

OMICRON: HOW TO PREVENT INFECTION? Even as India is seeing a steep rise in Covid cases driven by infections caused by the Omicron variant, there’s an urgent need to scale up preventive measures such as masks, vaccinations, social distancing and not to be complacent.

Meanwhile, doctors at the Delhi government-run Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital said that multi-vitamins and paracetamol were the only treatment provided to Omicron patients.

India on Monday reported 1,700 cases of Omicron variant from 23 states and Union territories, while also logging 33,750 new Covid-19 cases in a span of 24 hours, taking the active caseload to 1,45,582.

To fight the rising cases, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, last week, announced that Covid-19 vaccination will start January 3 onward for children in the 15-18 age group.

According to official estimates, there are approximately 10 crore children in the 15-18 age group eligible for the Covid-19 vaccination.

According to the latest guidelines by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the precautions and steps to be taken remain the same as before.

“It is essential to mask yourself properly, take both doses of vaccines (if not yet vaccinated), maintain social distancing and maintain good ventilation to the maximum possible,” the guidelines said.

Meanwhile, the Centre has advised states to treat fever, and sore throat as Omicron symptoms.

“Any person who has a fever with or without cough, headache, sore throat, breathlessness, body ache, or other symptoms should be considered as a suspected case of Covid-19 unless proven otherwise,” it wrote in a letter to states.

Over 16 lakh teens have been vaccinated so far on the first day of vaccination, as per the government’s CoWin portal.

Rajesh Bhushan and ICMR Director General Dr Balram Bhargava urged Chief Secretaries of all states/UTs to set up round the clock functional RAT booths at different locations, engage medical and paramedical staff, and encourage the use of home test kits.

“Early testing of suspect patients and their contacts and isolating them expeditiously are one of the key measures to curb transmission of SARSCoV-2, causative agent of Covid-19,” it added.

2021 HAS BOLSTERED MY BELIEF IN PICKING SUBJECTS: PARINEETI Actress Parineeti Chopra credits 2021 for bolstering her belief in picking subjects that are ahead of the curve as she showcased her acting prowess through films like ‘Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar’, ‘The Girl On The Train’ and ‘Saina’.

She said: “It’s a year filled with gratitude for me. 2021 was the year I had been waiting for, having taken the biggest plunge of my career in the form of ‘Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar’, ‘The Girl on the Train’ and ‘Saina’ and thankfully, each one of them paid off.”

'Exploring regional food options will gain popularity in 2022': Chef Kunal Kapoor With the pandemic going well into its second year, the food industry has changed dramatically-- new cuisine emerging from home kitchens and take-out restaurants has gained ground. Chef Kunal Kapoor believes practicing food sustainability by growing your own herbs, fruits, and vegetables is something we should all practice to propel the food sustainability movement. The celebrity chef speaks exclusively to IANSlife about what to expect for the food industry in 2022: Q: How do you contribute to sustainability?

Chef Kunal: My purchasing decisions are based on the taste and price of the food item. It is important to note how food is produced, packaged, and consumed.

I practice sustainability by reducing the use of plastic and food waste on a daily basis, eating locally grown vegetables, and eating seasonally. Since the pandemic, as people have spent more time indoors, organic farming has grown in popularity. The most promising method of practicing food sustainability is to grow your own herbs, fruits, and vegetables.

Q: What are the food trends to watch for in 2022?

Chef Kunal: The concept of cloud kitchens and takeaways has become very popular since the pandemic, as it gives you a selection of great food choices without the costs of service staff and restaurant rent; I believe this will continue to get bigger.

Practicing food sustainability, consuming healthy food, exploring regional food options will increasingly gain popularity.

Q: What is it about vegan food that is taking off in India?

Chef Kunal: With changing lifestyles, people nowadays have specific requirements for their daily diet and dairy intake. Veganism is seen more as a lifestyle, rather than a current trend in the food space. Through my cooking and recipes, I love to accommodate all sorts of audiences with different food preferences, which is why I have an ongoing list of vegan recipes for those who prefer to choose veganism. Veganism is seen as a sustainable and healthy way of living, as it restricts meat, eggs, dairy products or any other animal-derived products from your diet.

Q: What is your favourite food to unwind from a long day?

Chef Kunal: I enjoy good food. I love trying

new dishes and I'm always curious about ingredients, I experiment with my evening snacks. I can never get enough of cooking, so even after a long day of work, I still try to prepare a tasty dish that I can savour while watching my favourite TV show or reading a good book. If I'm looking for something quick to prepare, I opt for my Saffola Masala Oats Classic Masala and make it just the way I like it.

Maintaining your health goals well into the new year For many people the new year means new goals and new resolutions. Quite often as the year progresses, these goals tend to become less important. There are a few things you can do to try and sustain the momentum and keep up with your health: Set easily achievable goals One way to ensure you keep up the momentum is by setting little milestones that are achievable and measurable. An example may be rather than having the goal of ‘I want to be healthier’, set a goal of ‘I want to try and be physically active for at least 20 minutes four times a week’ or ‘I want to include salads with two of my main meals in the day’. Make sure the goals you set are realistic. If you have a chance, spend a little bit of time planning; this may go a long way! Taking time to reflect on yourself and your health is something everyone can do with a little bit more of, as life is usually always on the go!

Health goals to help you feel good Aim to stay active with any type of physical activity you enjoy and find easy to do. You may increase your intensity with time if you feel like it is getting too easy. The more you enjoy these activities, the longer you are likely to maintain physical activity levels even when life gets busy. Remember it can be

something as small as parking the car further away to get some extra steps in or to do a little dance with the kids.

Avoid completely cutting out certain foods and drinks It is more sustainable to include small amounts of everything rather than completely cutting out certain foods and drinks. Rather than focusing on ‘what I should not have’ try to focus on the positive of ‘what can I include

more of?’. This will make the process easier and a more positive experience. Aim to have mostly nutritious foods containing more fibre, vitamins, and minerals and keep the processed foods occasionally and in small quantities.

Since the body is 70% water, aim to keep yourself well hydrated with water. By consistently increasing your overall water intake, you may notice many more positive changes, including clear skin, feeling energetic, and your insides will thank you for it. Every now and then, you may have a drink of choice but as long as you don’t make it your primary drink of choice there is no harm in that.

Be kind to yourself Don’t be too hard on yourself if things don’t always go to plan. Keeping a positive and happy relationship with yourself will allow you to continue your health journey. You are more likely to continue with changes if you feel happy. If you often feel guilty after having certain foods, drinks or not being as active as you like, focus on the things you have done or will do next.

Create a supportive environment Sometimes it can be difficult to keep up the momentum if you are the only one trying to change. Get the family or even your friends involved with your health goals, whether it may be to help remind you of what your health goals are or even better if you can help support each other.

Some people may like to get a professional in to help keep them accountable and provide support and this is where a dietitian can be of further assistance.

Turkey Kebabs

Christmas is incomplete without Turkey! In preparation for Christmas, there’s no doubt that roast Turkey is on the menu. What about trying something different this year? These spicy turkey kebabs are quick to prepare and taste great, so you can spend more time with your loved ones instead of in the kitchen. Try them... they won’t disappoint! This is a quick and easy recipe of turkey kebabs, made with minced turkey, Indian spices and served with mint and cranberry sauce

Ingredients: • 500g turkey mince • 1 egg • 2-3 tbsp breadcrumbs • 1 tbsp ginger, finely chopped • 1-2 green chillies, finely chopped • 1 med red onion, finely chopped • 2 tbsp coriander, finely chopped • 2 tbsp mint leaves finely chopped • ¼ tsp cardamom powder • ½ tsp black pepper, coarse • 1 tsp red chilli flakes • Salt to taste • For frying: Olive oil

Serves 2-4

Method: 1. In a large bowl, mix all the ingredients with the turkey mince. Refrigerate for 1-2 hours until ready to cook.

2. Take 2–3 tbsp of the mixture and roll to form smooth patties or kebabs.

3. Heat olive oil in a pan and fry until cooked through and golden brown.

4. Serve hot

Garnish: With fresh Garden salad and trio of sauce – cranberry sauce, mint sauce and tomato sauce.

Tip: Gently stir the rice because basmati after soaking becomes very fragile

Variation: Have as a snack, in a wrap or in a burger.
