COVID Catch-Up Plan to Deliver for Patients

MELBOURNE, Apr 3: A record number of Victorians will receive elective surgery as part of the Andrews Labor Government’s COVID CatchUp Plan – designed to exceed pre-pandemic levels by 25 per cent and get more Victorians the care they need, when they need it.

We know COVID-19 has disrupted care for many Victorians, while nurses and doctors focused on patients in the most critical conditions.

As part of the plan, a $1.5 billion investment will boost surgical activity across Victoria to record levels, providing the care which was deferred because of the global pandemic.

Designed with our hardworking healthcare workers front of mind, the plan will mean we’re training more nurses, and opening more theatres for longer – including nights and weekends.

Next year, we’ll be running at 125 per cent of our normal pre-pandemic effort – despite the Commonwealth refusing to step up and fund half of the state’s hospital costs. It will mean 40,000 extra surgeries in the next year, building up to record 240,000 surgeries every year in 2024.

In a Victorian first, Frankston Private Hospital will be transformed into a public surgery centre with the capacity to support up to 9,000 public patients per year once fully operational in 2023.

With no emergency department diverting healthcare workers to more critical patients, this facility will be focussed on COVID catch-up care – meaning patients can get the treatment they need faster.

Two additional state-of-the-art theatres will be completed by early next year to boost services at the hospital and provide more options for Victorians waiting for their surgery.

A $475 million investment will support more activity in the public system, including more sameday surgeries, increased twilight and after-hours work, and theatre improvements to increase

efficiency and fast-track patients through the system.

More public patients will be treated in private hospitals with a $548 million investment – building upon sector collaboration we’ve seen during the pandemic – with an extra 51,300 Victorians to receive non-urgent surgery by June 2024.

Rapid Access Hubs – which exclusively perform specific surgeries such as hernia repairs, cataract surgeries and joint replacements – will be established across metropolitan public hospitals allowing surgical theatres, equipment and staffing to be streamlined. This will increase the number of surgeries that can be performed each day.

The first eight hubs will be established in the next year at St Vincent’s on the Park, Broadmeadows Hospital, Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital, Royal Women’s Hospital, Werribee Mercy Hospital, Sandringham Hospital, the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, and one in regional Victoria with details to be confirmed shortly.

To support the delivery of this new plan and drive long-term improvements and system reforms, a new Chief Surgical Adviser will work with a Surgery Recovery Taskforce to provide clinical expertise and advice.

Victoria’s healthcare workforce will be supported by a package worth more than $80 million to upskill more than 1,000 nurses and theatre and sterilisation technicians, support the training of an additional 400 perioperative nurses and recruit a further 2,000 highly skilled healthcare workers from overseas.

A $20 million Surgical Equipment Innovation Fund will be established to ensure our health services can upgrade their surgical equipment and diagnostic machines with the latest technology which will help get more patients on surgical lists every day.

Victorian Low and Non-Alcoholic Exports on The Rise

MELBOURNE. Apr 3: More and more global consumers are choosing the Victorian made non-alcoholic drink option on restaurant and bar menus, according to new data unveiled in an export report today.

Minister for Agriculture Mary-Anne Thomas today released the 2020-21 Victorian Food and Fibre Export Performance Report which showcases the resilience of Victorian exports such as beverages which have grown steadily over recent years to be valued at $101 million.

In 2020-21 the value of non-alcoholic beverage exports increased by 17 per cent to $67 million from the previous year, with exports in this category almost doubling in value over the last four years.

Meanwhile, wine exports to the United Kingdom increased by 30 per cent to become Victoria’s most valuable export market for wine demonstrating the emerging appeal of Victorian produce to this market.

The Andrews Labor Government is supporting local drinks producers to expand into new markets at home and abroad through a range of programs including the $15 million Food to Market and $10.2 million Small-Scale and Craft programs.

As part of this, the Labor Government is supporting a $1.5 million Drink Victorian program, aimed at getting more locally produced drinks onto lists and shelves at 100 Victorian hospitality venues and retailers.

The program features 18 Low and No Alcohol producers including Banks Botanicals in the Yarra Valley which specialise in botanicals sourced from the Australian bush;

The Fermentary in Daylesford, suppliers of traditionally made water kefir; and Melbourne based Brunswick Aces, producers of nonalcoholic wine, beer, and gin.

The program was developed to help drinks producers recover from the global pandemic, bushfires, export challenges and strong international and interstate competition in the domestic market.

Despite the challenges faced by the state’s agri-producers more broadly during 2020-21, Victoria maintained its position as Australia’s leading export state, contributing 27 per cent of national food and fibre exports.

A key focus of the Government’s 10-year Agriculture Strategy is supporting industry to grow through increased exports, investment and new products. Trade and investment efforts were further boosted last year by the appointment of in-market agriculture export specialists in Southeast Asia, the Middle East and China.

Delivering Station Car Parks to Improve Travel

MELBOURNE, Mar 28: The Andrews Labor Government continues to deliver new and upgraded train station car parking across Victoria, with works progressing at five stations as part of the Car Parks for Commuters program.

Construction has commenced on a major upgrade which will increase parking at Belgrave Station by 470 spaces, while contracts have been awarded and works will shortly commence on the delivery of 55 extra spaces at Yarraman, 30 new and upgraded spaces at Upper Ferntree Gully, 50 new and upgraded spaces at Nar Nar Goon and 40 additional spaces at Drouin.

The new 640-space multi-deck car park at Belgrave Station will be built on the site of the current commuter car park, meaning the existing car park is closed throughout construction. Passengers who usually park at Belgrave Station are advised to use a new temporary car park that has been constructed at Upwey High School, within walking distance to Upwey Station.

Additional safety improvements at Belgrave Station will include CCTV and lighting for safety, lifts, a public announcement system, 16 new accessible

parking spaces and an undercover pick up and drop off area. A trial of Electric Vehicle Charging will also take place at the station. Access to the car park will be widened with a priority exit lane and priority signals for buses at the roundabout, and improved pedestrian safety.

Commuters at Yarraman, Upper Ferntree Gully, Nar Nar Goon and Drouin will also benefit from new accessible parking bays, bicycle parking, lighting and CCTV. New secure Parkiteer bike storage facilities will also be installed at Upper Ferntree Gully and Yarraman. The projects will also plant around 14,000 new trees, shrubs and grasses across the four sites.

Victorians Starting Apprenticeships in Record Numbers

MELBOURNE, Mar 29: The Andrews Labor Government’s record investment in skills and training is continuing to support growing numbers of Victorians into apprenticeships and meaningful career pathways, bolstering industries across the state.

The latest National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) report shows Victoria leading the nation with the highest increase in apprenticeship commencements, doubling to almost 50,000 Victorians in the 12 months to September 2021. More than 9,500 apprentices began in Victoria in the September quarter alone.

Some of the most popular apprenticeships were Automotive and Engineering, with a 141.7 per cent increase, and

Electrotechnology and Telecommunications, with a 177.3 per cent increase.

The Labor Government is also giving more Victorians access to skills and training, with the NCVER report showing the number of female apprentices and trainees has increased by 71.7 per cent – a direct result of initiatives like the Government’s $5 million fund to remove barriers faced by women in traditionally male-dominated trades.

The Government is continuing to back great apprenticeship pathways for Victorian jobseekers, including by establishing Apprenticeships Victoria, which is a point of contact for apprentices and connects the dots between trainers, employers and industry.

The $33 million Big Build Apprenticeships program is providing 1,500 opportunities to

Victorian apprentices and trainees each year for four years to kickstart their careers on some of the state’s largest projects, including the new Footscray Hospital, North East Link and Warrnambool Learning and Library Hub. The Government is also enhancing the quality of training and making it more industryrelevant by recruiting experts as TAFE teachers under the TAFE Teacher Training Scholarship, with study assistance worth $10,000.

Since 2014, the Government has made a record $3.2 billion investment to rebuild TAFE and support universities and higher education to ensure Victorians have access to high quality education and rewarding career pathways.

Victorians Cutting Costs with Zero Emissions Vehicle Subsidy

MELBOURNE, Apr 2: Thousands of Victorians are saving up to $500 a month on fuel costs after taking advantage of the Andrews Labor Government’s nation leading Zero Emissions Vehicle subsidy.

Subsidies of $3,000 for Zero Emission Vehicles (ZEVs) under $68,740 are assisting Victorians to take control of their costs of living while helping Victoria halve emissions by 2030.

More than 4,000 Victorians have already taken advantage of the Labor Government’s $46 million ZEVs incentive program since May last year, with 2021 sales 310 per cent higher than the previous year.

Latest consumer survey data shows 99.2 per cent of customers are satisfied with their new car. Areas with the highest uptake of ZEVs include Melbourne’s western

and eastern suburbs, with the Wyndham, Boroondara and Monash local government areas leading the charge.

The $46 million subsidy program is part of the Labor Government’s $100 million Zero Emissions Vehicles Roadmap, which also installing charging infrastructure across Victoria to ensure drivers will never be more than one hour from a charging station.

The Government is leading by example by replacing 400 government fleet vehicles with ZEVs by 2023. In addition, from 2025 all new buses will be zero emissions and the metropolitan train network will be powered by 100 per cent renewable energy, similar to the Solar Trams initiative already in place.

The transport sector accounts for 25 per cent of Victoria’s total carbon emissions – electric vehicles will reduce emissions, while also reducing the amount of air and noise pollution, making our cities and towns more liveable.

Reforms Chart a Brighter Port Future for Victoria

MELBOURNE, Mar 30: Victoria will continue leading the nation as Australia’s biggest exporter with new legislative reforms designed to strengthen the operations of commercial ports, supporting hundreds of thousands of jobs and economic growth across the state.

The Andrews Labor Government is delivering on its response to an independent review of the sector with the introduction of the Port Reforms and Other Matters Bill into State Parliament last week.

The Government has accepted all 63 recommendations from the Independent Review of the Victorian Ports System, including establishing Ports Victoria as a single entity to lead the strategic management and operation of Victorian commercial ports and waterways.

With the freight and logistics sector already contributing $21 billion to state’s economy each year and employing 260,000 Victorians, the Bill is set to make it more agile and efficient in supporting economic growth and recovery, and adaptable as circumstances change.

As well as embedding Ports Victoria in legislation, the changes include adapting its charter to promote and facilitate trade, undertake operational activities, and provide technical and consultancy services concerning the whole of the Victorian ports system.

The Bill will further improve the safety of essential port services such as pilotage and towage by giving harbour masters

clear responsibility and powers to ensure navigational safety in their ports. Transport Safety Victoria will retain responsibility for licensing individual pilots and registering pilotage services providers; however, the Bill provides that registration must follow the issue of a licence by Ports Victoria.

The Review recommended targeted reform to give Ports Victoria a specific role overseeing the operational performance of the state’s harbour masters to ensure their safety roles and functions will reliably and consistently apply across Victoria’s commercial ports.

The Port of Hastings Development Authority will become the Port of Hastings Corporation to better reflect its future role

and open the potential for investment and development across a range of dry and liquid bulk trades. The port will potentially play a key role in supporting new energy projects such as offshore wind and hydrogen.

Approximately $26 billion of locally produced and manufactured exports pass through Victoria’s commercial ports annually, handling almost a quarter of Australia’s total food and fibre exports. The Port of Melbourne is the largest port for containerised and general cargo in Australia, handling around 36 per cent of the nation’s container trade.

The Bill is a significant step forward in implementing the Government’s response to an independent review of the port system.

More Family Violence Support for Diverse Communities

MELBOURNE, Mar 31: The Andrews Labor Government is ensuring all Victorians can be supported by the family violence and sexual assault service system.

Minister for Prevention of Family Violence Gabrielle Williams today launched new grants that will increase supports for multicultural communities when seeking help in times of

crisis.

Grants of up to $250,000 are available to improve access to help and support for those experiencing family violence from culturally and linguistically diverse communities.

People from migrant and refugee backgrounds disproportionately experience inequality and discrimination. This impacts their ability to access care and support when and where they need it. Because of this, the risks of family and sexual violence increase, and barriers to accessing services and support are even higher.

This grants program is part of working towards the Government’s vision of creating an inclusive, safe, responsive and

accountable family violence system that supports all Victorians.

The Working Together: Strengthening Family Violence Support with Multicultural Communities program will support partnerships and collaboration between Victoria’s multicultural community organisations and specialist family violence and sexual assault services.

The government is working to strengthen the capacity of Victorian multicultural community organisations and specialist family violence services to work together to provide culturally responsive and tailored projects to victim survivors and those who use violence.

Victoria is leading the nation with its work to end family violence, with the Andrews Labor Government investing more than $3.5 billion since the Royal Commission into Family Violence.

Minister said that there are over and around 1.3 lakh Indian students living and studying in Australia. "We're looking at a work and holiday visa arrangement for promoting tourism. A post-study work visa between 2 and 4 years will be available for Indian students, particularly for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) graduates. We have opened the way for students aspiring to study and work in Australia," he said.

NEW DELHI, Apr 2: After India sealed the trade deal with Australia, Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal said that the agreement is profitable for both countries with Australia's raw materials and India's quality finished goods.

Union Minister said, "No one has expected that we would be able to seal the trade deal with developed countries like Australia.

Australia is the country with whom we don't have any competition. Australia has quality raw materials and India has quality finished goods. We both component each other. The agreement is a win-win for both countries."

The India-Australia Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (IndAus ECTA) was signed by commerce minister Piyush Goyal and his counterpart Australian trade, tourism and investment minister Dan Tehan in a virtual ceremony attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Australian counterpart Scott Morrison.

Goyal said that this trade pact will create one million jobs in the next 4-5 years, says

This agreement will be signalling for other developed countries' agreements such as the UK, Canada and the EU, with whom India is currently negotiating for Free Trade Agreement.

"We expect 1 million jobs creation in India in next 4-5 yrs. A number of new opportunities will open for Indian chefs and Yoga instructors in the time to come. We've also discussed the cooperation of education institutions between India and Australia," Goyal said.

"We're removing trade barriers which will lead to doubling of trade in the future that'll have great potential for labour-oriented sectors. This free trade is expected to take bilateral trade from the existing USD 27 billion to nearly USD 45-50 billion in the next 5 years," he added.

Talking about access to Australian wine, Goyal said, "We have consulted the Indian wine industry and stakeholders on multiple occasions. They had given us suggestions.

They suggested us minimum import price for high-quality wines."

"And assured them that their interest will be safeguarded. India will give concession and market access to Australian wine over and above the price tag of USD 5/750 millilitre. India doesn't have any competition in this price tag. Investment and quality will come in the Indian wine market.

Indian wineries will be benefitted from the investment and technology of Australia.

Grape Farmers will get an opportunity. Indian winners can also sell their wines globally," he added.

Australia is the 17th largest trading partner of India and India is Australia's ninth largest trading partner. India-Australia bilateral trade for both merchandise and services is valued at USD 27.5 billion in 2021. India's merchandise exports to Australia grew 135 per cent between 2019 and 2021.

India's exports consist primarily of a broad-based basket largely of finished products and were USD 6.9 billion in 2021.

India's merchandise imports from Australia were USD 15.1 billion in 2021, consisting largely of raw materials, minerals and intermediate goods. Three-fourths of India's imports consist of coal, with 70 per cent of coal being coking coal. Australia has a surplus in merchandise trade of about USD 8 billion, primarily because of coal imports which are USD 11.2 billion.

Australians warned of impending influenza surge

CANBERRA, Mar 27: An expert on Sunday warned that Australia is set for a return of influenza in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Cases of influenza hit an all-time low in Australia in 2021 as a result of strict lockdowns and border closures that were implemented to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

There were 598 confirmed cases in 2021 and zero deaths compared to 313,033 infections and 953 deaths prior to the pandemic in 2019.

However, Ian Barr, deputy director of the World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Centre for Reference and Research on Influenza, said that with restrictions lifted it was a matter of time until the flu returned to Australia.

"I think in 2022 we'll see the return of influenza," he told state broadcaster SBS. "The only question is how severe the season will be, and that's difficult to judge. I

don't think we're going to have a big year like 2017 or 2019, but we will see a low-tomoderate year I think."

Experts have warned that Australians' natural immunity to influenza has likely waned during the pandemic.

The national influenza immunization program will begin on April 4, with Australians urged to get vaccinated to protect the health system from a double blow of surging Covid and flu infections.

Barr said the vaccine was designed based on information collected by the Victorian Infectious Diseases Reference Laboratory on the influenza strains most likely to emerge in 2022.

"That involves isolating viruses, growing

viruses, and then purifying and inactivating the viruses," he said.

"We make decisions around six-to-nine months before the viruses actually circulate and make those available to manufacturers who scale up production and make vaccines."

On Sunday, Australia reported more than 40,000 new Covid-19 cases and 11 deaths, according to health department figures from states and territories.

New facility to expand transforming food waste into compost in Canberra collection pilot servicing 5,000 households in the city's northern suburbs.

The service diverts food waste from landfill and reduces harmful greenhouse gases by turning food scraps and garden waste into compost for the soil.

CANBERRA, Apr 3: A large-scale organics recycling facility will open in Australia's capital city of Canberra to strengthen its circular economy.

The Australian Capital Territory (ACT) government announced funding for a new Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) facility to process Canberra's waste.

It comes after a successful trial of a FOGO

contamination rate lower than 0.1 per cent in the first three months.

Steel said the government would build a large-scale FOGO processing facility as an essential step towards rolling out a Canberrawide collection service.

The government has identified a site near the existing Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) south of Canberra for the new facility.

"We are investing in new waste infrastructure that will support Canberrans to take everyday action on climate change and reduce our city's future emissions," Chris Steel, ACT's minister for transport and city services, said in a statement.

When built, it will be capable of processing up to 50,000 tonnes of FOGO material every year, with the capacity to expand to 70,000 tonnes to meet future demand.

"Food and garden waste can be transformed into nutrient-rich compost and removing these items from our landfill will help cut waste emissions by up to 30 per cent."

"FOGO is a key part of our plans for Canberra's circular economy - turning things currently considered waste into valuable products like compost, which can be used in agriculture, viticulture and the parks and gardens of our whole region," Steel said.

The growth was predominated in spending on clothes, experiencing a 17.8-per cent increase, and hospitality venues, up 15.9 per cent, a sign that confidence was growing among consumers to get out and about.

The ARA touted optimism for the upcoming Easter long weekend in the second week of April.

CANBERRA, Mar 29: Despite ongoing disruptions due to the Covid-19 pandemic, widespread flood and global supply chain pressures, Australia's economy continues its upward swing as seen in retail spending, official data revealed.

The data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics showed that sales had

increased by 9.1 per cent compared with the same time in February last year.

Australian Retailers Association (ARA) CEO Paul Zahra flagged the increase as a sign of "robust performance" despite ongoing disruptions.

"Retailers have navigated the worst of the

ARA research predicted that Australians are tipped to spend A$7.1 billion on overseas trips.

The Australian government announced on Friday that it is scrapping a requirement for all overseas travellers to return a negative Covid-19 test prior to departing for the country.

The requirement was introduced late in 2021 when Australia's borders were opened to residents and citizens.

"Given that the vaccination requirements remain and the masking requirements, the medical advice is that (the test) would no longer be required," Hunt said.

"Particularly as there are some challenges in some jurisdictions in having access to those tests or proving those tests."

Australia Post issues stamps to mark Queen Elizabeth II's 70th year on throne

CANBERRA, Apr 4: Australia Post on released two postage stamps to mark the platinum jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, as the nation commemorates her 70th year as Head of the Commonwealth.

The two stamps depict portraits of Queen Elizabeth II from 1952, the year she rose to the throne, and 2019, highlighting her longevity as Head of the Commonwealth, which includes countries such as Australia, Canada, and New Zealand.

Australia Post Group Philatelic Manager Michael Zsolt said the latest additions form part of the service's tradition of honouring Queen Elizabeth II. Queen Elizabeth II is the most featured person on Australian stamps, and the Australia Post was the first postal authority in the Commonwealth to produce a stamp for her birthday each year, Zsolt said.

The Australia Post had previously released stamps to celebrate the golden and diamond jubilees of

Queen Elizabeth II, marking 50 and 60 years of her service.

While Queen Elizabeth II has very little involvement in the governance of Australia, she still plays a prominent cultural role.

Her image is also displayed on Australian coins and the A$5 banknote.

Qantas adds new domestic routes to boost tourism

CANBERRA, Mar 28: Australian flag carrier Qantas on Monday announced that it would launch four new routes across its domestic network to boost tourism and connectivity between regional centres and capital cities.

Three weekly return flights will operate on the airline's newly added routes, Darwin-Townsville, Brisbane-Wagga, and Adelaide-Newcastle.

Another will see four weekly return flights run between Darwin and Cairns. They will together add more than 2,300 seats into Qantas's domestic network each week.

QantasLink CEO John Gissing said the new services were among 52 new routes added to its domestic network since the beginning of the pandemic as Australians looked for local travel opportunities.

"Not only have we seen a huge surge in demand for domestic tourism, but we have seen a real shift towards investment in our regional communities as economic and industrial hubs."

On Sunday, Qantas also launched flights to the heart of Australia to bring tourists to the world-famous Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park and part of the nation's aboriginal culture.

The airline will operate four flights a week between the nation's biggest city of Sydney and Uluru to support the iconic tourist landscape.

The national carrier said as Australians and international visitors are making up for two years of lost travel adventures, the airline has seen a huge surge in demand for domestic tourism.

The investigation seeks to characterise "normal" changes in the human body during spaceflight. For instance, wristworn sensors that measure activity levels and light exposure can help researchers better understand the sleep-wake cycle of astronauts.

Blood and saliva samples collected by crew members throughout their mission can also help scientists assess changes in various hormones, proteins, and cells that reveal how the immune system changes in space.

In addition, he contributed to a separate investigation collecting biological samples from the crew aboard the space station and placing them in a storage bank, from which researchers can draw upon the samples to study spaceflight-induced changes in human physiology.

Ram's honour featured in the prestigious Queen Elizabeth II's 2021 New year's Honours list, which was also published in the 'London Gazette' - the official publication of the Crown. Instituted in 1917, Queen's Honours are among the most prestigious awards worldwide.

The Runway Dressmaker Karishma Kasabia of Melbourne is dressing the town with her signature label, and it takes just a glance to know it’s a ‘Kholo’ dress.

W

ith a unique name for her label, Kholo, that is phonetically appealing to both Indians and Australians, we here at the Indian Weekly and G’day India couldn’t keep away from Kholo’s charm.

Born in Fiji, thirty-seven-year-old Karishma moved to New Zealand with her parents after the coup but it soon became very challenging for them to divide their lives between the two countries due to political upheavals. So Karishma moved alone to Australia in 2006 and studied for Masters in Arts and Design at Monash.

A single mother with a background in graphic design, Karishma ran an agency years ago but things changed when her son was born. “Something in my DNA must have shifted,” says Karishma. She wanted to drape something that was custom-made.

Karishma was always fascinated with colour and clothes and was especially inspired by the neighbourhood tailors in India, the way

a piece of fabric was hand-dyed and cut.

Karishma recalls that during her cousin’s wedding, she was asked to design not only the bride’s wedding lehenga, but also dress the mother and sister of the bride.

The birth of Kholo originated from that satisfying confidence and passion that she turned into a brand in 2017. She had a background in graphic design and a six-month online crash course on e-commerce.

All her prints are custom made. She looks at what artists on Pinterest are doing and she then buys the prints off their libraries, manipulating the artwork to design accordingly. “I move to manipulate the artwork. It goes to where it’s going to sit on a woman’s body – how is she [going] to hold this heavy embroidery? Like, [should] I put it here if it’s just going to drag? I needed to have control of the placement of the beading because it’s quite heavy,” says Karishma.

Naturally, it’s all about making a woman feel comfortable.

The name ‘Kholo’ was also a ‘mic just dropped’ kind of moment for Karishma when her son, who was just starting to speak, would ask Karishma to ‘Mommy kholo (open)’ everything – from a calculator to the remote control. So that’s how Karishma’s Kholo has been an open-ended question for many in Melbourne.

Karishma also does her own embroidery, directly learning the craft from the artisans of Bengal. From time to time, she holds her embroidery workshop at Hotel Windsor in Melbourne and Sydney, where patrons can also take their traditional embroidery frames home.

Karishma’s designs are impeccable, like her customer service. Sofie Carfi, the founder of Revival Runway, remembers Karishma’s prompt expression of interest to fix Sofie’s direct-from-India beading on one of her dresses.

This young fashionista is trying to change the mindset with body positivity and inclusiveness with one dress at a time. But she is also changing the philosophy of how women look at themselves, craving the ordinary from the extraordinary and making the experience their own.

Story Time Meet Melbourne writer Swarn Lamba; her latest children’s book ‘Let’s play’, is all about storytelling on different games from different states of India.

children’s book with all the ingredients to be an encyclopedia of Indian sports (games) is a gift to Australians. Swarn reflects her childhood through the lives of her granddaughters and often wondered connecting them to their roots. But how?

The thought soon translated, taking shape slowly through the medium of sports in an illustrated book, ‘Let’s play’. It’s an anthology of eight stories with eight different characters exploring traditional games like Kho-Kho and Gulli danda.

Sixty-seven-year-old Swarn moved to Australia from Tanzania with her husband in 2016 to be close to her daughter and her family. During the walks throughout the lockdowns, Swarn reminisced her childhood spent in Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Orissa, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, and Delhi. In between the games were the funny banters, the childish disagreements, and the animated faces that made it fun, no doubt but it was the cultural diversity that made it even more interesting.

The different food, languages, traditional attires, and all the childhood quirks sparked an idea of a book. The series of stories was created through the lens of a younger Swarn so that her granddaughters can resonate with her and India.

“With his tongue between his teeth, the nine-year-old Pritam is rocking on his haunches and writing his English words on his phatti. He had cleaned his slate and spread Multani mitti on it last night. It had then been left to dry. He had also filled his inkpot with water and dissolved small pieces of limestone in it to make the ink. His kalam, which is made of bamboo reed, is well sharpened to form a nib….”

As a child when she read books, she would always imagine herself weaving a story one day that everyone else would read. “I would daydream and the fairy tales I read to me into a world of fantasy”, says Swarn.

Her childhood dream to write did come true but under the shadows of a terrible incident. Swarn published her collection of poems ‘A Twinkle, A Tear…moments in a mother’s Life’. In 2008 after the unfortunate demise of her twenty-four- year old son in a car accident in 2006 in Tanzania, East Africa.

In his memory, Swarn wrote a coffee-table book online on Blurb called “Jay’s Journey” outlining his life with photographs that

had a story to tell. Swarn expressed that writing this book was a cathartic healing process, which became her way of expressing emotions.

These days Swarn works as a part-time primary teacher at Lyndhurst Primary School, and she’s also an interpreter in Hindi, Punjabi, and Urdu for the immigrant population that is not very fluent in English. She’s also a Melbourne Multi-faith and others Network and Women’s Interfaith Network Foundation member.

Growing up reading Grimm’s fairy tales to all the series by Enid Blyton, the writer in her was brewing as she soon began to read almost any situation, people, and the conversations that make people. So now, after almost after a decade, she’s leaving a legacy with Let’s Play for her granddaughters, who were also involved in launching her book on 20th March.

Dedicating the book to them, Swarn was not only playing the sweet grandmother but also an intelligent author for sparking young minds to an early knack for reading.

Let’s Play is an easy read for all eight-yearolds and above with beautiful illustrations; and a book that took a year to produce as soon as the idea was conceived. There’s also a possibility of Let’s Play two, says Swarn.

Currently, Swarn has completely revamped and revised a story she has written twenty years ago that is currently sitting with a publisher in Tanzania. It’s about life in a safari park as seen through the eyes of a Baobab tree that has stood there for a hundred years.

Juggling, life, work, writing a food blog and in between promoting her book in schools as an author, she turns a few pages now, and when she’s able, to read books. She’s currently reading Mao’s Last Dancer by Li Cunxin.

As we turn the last page to this interview, there was a moment in time in Swarn’s childhood when she would be encouraged by her father to speak in English at home and today this is her moment to cherish as an author.

s a child, Anmol (26), born in New Delhi, India and came to Melbourne at the age of eight, and was fascinated by the art of dance as it gave her the ability to express her feelings and emotions. She recollects her trips to India during summer breaks that deepened her roots. Looking back, music and dance were an inspiration that sparked her interest in the Indian culture.

Eighteen years later, with that spark, a Bachelor of Commerce majoring in marketing from Deakin University, she sets herself as Village Cinemas Marketing Coordinator for Communities presenting Melbourne with blockbusters from all across India, especially with the anticipated movie RRR (Rise, Roar, and Revolt) premiered in Melbourne on the twenty-fifth of March.

Having two years of experience with Village Cinemas, Anmol majorly handles Asian and Indian cinema, marketing and film

content. She also looks after Brand Purpose of Village Cinemas.

Owing to her father’s entrepreneurial skills and being involved in volunteering, such as the Australia India Society of Victoria (AISV) and other International relief events, she strived to stay connected to the community. She found this is what gave her that boost of confidence for this role.

“Before COVID we almost had two hundred Indian films release at Village Cinemas”, says Anmol. Summing up the community not only with Korean, Japanese, Chinese, and Indonesian films. As for Anmol, it is a proud moment to be a part of this milestone when the idea was to connect the Indian festivities with Indian cinema. Further, to be inclusive of the diversity of all cultures.

From Anmol’s perspective, she thinks the visibility of Indian cinema is showcasing different films from different regions of

India, especially the way the content is coming through with films like RRR is above and beyond, showcasing the box office.

“Indian cinema is getting bigger and better on a year-to-year basis. I think that sort of visibility in that sense is there for Indian cinema” Anmol added.

The way how the box office is behaving with the release of RRR is a sheer result of the way the community is engaged. The premier of RRR saw people jumping on their seats, chorusing with Naatu the song,

whistling, dancing and giving the eardrums a good run for their senses. As if one is sitting somewhere in India munching away each popcorn in anticipation for the next scene, and by in large, it’s a three and half hour total paisa vasool moment.

Pioneering her belief in the community Anmol has created an enterprise within an enterprise as Village Cinemas, where a marketing coordinator has the liberty to give the audience what they’re craving.

Reading the audience’s mind is a talent that Anmol has in plenty and we see this young woman soaring heights making a name for herself.

We at G’day India and the Indian Weekly are not only enthralled with RRR but also with this budding new talent Anmol, as unique as her name translates.

A great reminder to all of us that age is no bar and moving in with time is the essence of the community and its audience, as it’s not about an individual but it’s about the public. Hiding the assets of the matrimonial pool BY GURPAL SINGH

F

undamental to the disclosure obligations in the event of division of the financial assets in the event of separation/divorce is identifying the asset pool to include both the real property and other financial resources including but not limited to the business interests, investments, and the superannuation.

The family law rules require that the parties to a financial division of the pool must be open, frank, and honest with each other and with the court. Complete financial transparency between the parties is highly crucial. This obligatory provision is mandatory and goes on for as long as the process does, from the pre-action phase until after the process is concluded.

One does require minute scrutiny of the business(s) and its structure, shell companies, real properties, mortgage, refinancing of the financial facilities, trusts, lending, or gifting the money to family members and friends, private undisclosed loans, fake bills, fake salaries, non-existent employees, dissipation of the property, purchase of the cryptocurrencies and its location/value, superannuation and so on. As a part of the disclosure process, both parties must provide sworn financial statements and supporting documentation. Any attempt to provide false or incomplete information may significantly impact the division of property, equalization, and support obligations.

The investigation into the asset is essentially a forensic exercise that requires the curious partner to raise several doubts and questions on the actions and conduct of the partner trying to hide the asset which otherwise shall be a part of the matrimonial pool. The investigation into the financial

statement(s) (both personal and business) generally for the last three years shall be able to reflect on the financial habits of the spouse/partner and provide several indications as to the conduct leading to conclusions in respect of hiding of the assets.

One need to watch for these bank statements or letters arriving from financial institutions (unfortunately in recent times, every communication generally comes in an email).

In case the party is not satisfied with the disclosure, the court may be requested to order a forensic accounting of the accounts of the spouse. Forensic accountants can assist by tracking the financial transactions over a period to determine the dissipation of the financial assets. A forensic accountant can also help trace exempt matrimonial property back to its origin and determine whether there had been mixing and mingling of the funds to exclude the same from becoming a part of the pool and consequently exempt from the division between the parties.

Non-disclosure is called a cancer of matrimonial property litigation. Nondisclosure discourages settlement or promotes settlements which are inadequate, unjust, and unfair. Such a conduct increases

the time, pain, and financial cost of the litigation. A prolonged stress of unnecessary battle may lead a weaker party simply to give up and walk away with only a small share of the assets known to the parties and a deep pain and anguish about the failure of justice leading to a far-reaching impact on the partner and the children of the marriage.

In case a party to the marriage/relationship is caught hiding assets with an objective to defeat the process of the law or sworn false documents during the separation to conceal the assets the party may be committing a fraud. The person could be sentenced to pay restitution to the other partner, a fine to the court and / or an imprisonment.

If a party is concerned about the partner’s ability to destroy evidence, one may apply to the court for an Anton Piller Order which allows the parties to enter each other’s properties to preserve potentially relevant material even during the proceedings.

The family law matters often involve complex corporate structures and it is not uncommon for a party to hide the assets by using a corporate veil. To obtain an Anton Piller Order, three requirements must be met, including the evidence that the partner is hiding assets or cash; great disadvantage if documents were destroyed such as missing out a large sum of money at the time of settlement; the evidence that documents are in existence and in the possession of the other party indulged in the wrongdoing. One needs to demonstrate that there are financial records held on a computer located at some location of the party in question.

It’s a daunting process, highly time consuming and expensive exercise. Kindly be vigilant and seek timely legal advice.

Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam was a distinguished Indian aerospace scientist who served as the President of India from 2002 to 2007. Dr. Kalam and Pramukh Swami Maharaj first met on 30 June 2001 in New Delhi, India forming a lasting friendship and spiritual rapport. Thereafter, they met in person or by phone on numerous occasions.

he month of April is special, not only because the weather is getting a bit colder here in Melbourne but also because Easter brings with it the spirit of happiness and fun. People are looking forward to this mini break to meet family and friends and spend some quality time with them.

Easter is traditionally a Christian festival that marks the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Remembering the resurrection of Jesus is a way to renew daily hope that we have victory over sin. The dates of Easter change from year to year but it usually falls sometime between the end of March and the end of April.

Easter follows a period of fasting called Lent. For Christians, Lent is a time to prepare for Easter and to think about their relationship with God. It represents the 40 days when Jesus was tempted by the devil in the desert. During this time, he didn't eat or drink anything. Because of this, some Christians give up some food or 'fast' for Lent. For some people this is giving up all food and just drinking, but for others, they just give up luxury food like chocolate or cakes.

Sometimes this is also called the 'The Great Fast'.

Also, the week before Easter is called the Holy week. In many churches around the

world special services are held every day and up to and including the Good Friday.

Easter is celebrated in several ways in northern Europe and the United States. Most of these celebrations have nothing to do with the Christian meaning of the holiday.

These celebrations are related more to the pagan festivals of ancient Germany.

Children are given baskets filled with candy.

Eggs are decorated and hidden for children to find. People wear new clothes and go to church. Greeting cards are exchanged.

An Easter Egg Roll is held on the lawn of the White House on the day after Easter.

Small leafless trees or branches are carried indoors and decorated with coloured eggs, paper trims, and lights. Some shopping malls offer children a chance to visit with an adult costumed as the Easter Bunny. Tulips, hyacinths and lilies are given as gifts. Weeklong vacations are taken following Easter Day, giving families the chance to visit with distant relatives. In America, many families leave the cold of northern states to visit amusement parks or sunny beaches in the south. Spring break for American students usually occurs near Easter time.

My memories of Easter also revolve around the Easter egg hunt that I do with my little nieces around Easter. During the few days of break I usually take them shopping where they get new clothes for Easter and chocolates in the shape of easter eggs and bunnies. The happiness on their face is priceless.

Easter traditions are different for each community and family, but the most important tradition is to be together as a family and thank Jesus for all he did and how he saved us. This Easter we place our hopes and lives with Christ, so we march, share meals, donate, worship, pray and proclaim bearing witness to the one who is with all of us.

Waymo says fully driverless rides are coming to US Google’s self-driving unit Waymo is reportedly planning to start offering rides in its fully autonomous vehicles -- without human safety drivers behind the wheel -- in San Francisco.

The Google spinoff said its driverless vehicles are now only available to employees but will soon grow to include members of the company’s “Trusted Tester” programme, reports The Verge.

Waymo is also making big moves in Arizona. The company’s service area is finally growing to include downtown Phoenix after operating exclusively in the exurban towns of Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa and Tempe for nearly five years.

Waymo has been running fully driverless rides without a safety driver in those towns outside of Phoenix for more than a year now, the report said.

The company is one of a handful trying to launch a wide-scale commercial service built around autonomous vehicles, like Argo AI (which is backed by Ford and

Volkswagen) and Cruise (which is backed

by General Motors), it added.

Waymo has been testing AVs in San Francisco for a decade, dating back to

The tech giant’s latest AI model Multitask Unified Model, or MUM can automatically and more accurately detect a wider range of personal crisis searches.

MUM can better understand the intent behind people’s questions to detect when a person is in need, which helps us more reliably show trustworthy and actionable information at the right time.

“MUM not only understands language, but also generates it. It’s trained across 75 different languages and many different tasks at once, allowing it to develop a more comprehensive understanding of information and world knowledge than previous models,” shared Pandu Nayak, Google Fellow and Vice President of Search, in a blogpost.

“And MUM is multimodal, so it understands information across text and images and, in the future, can expand to more modalities like video and audio,” he

Snapchat users can now share videos directly from YouTube app

Apple, which has been fined $55 million so far for failing to adhere to Dutch policies on dating apps, has published a new version of its App Store rules that allow local dating apps to take payments through third-party processors.

The company said it is eliminating the requirement that developers of dating apps in the Netherlands “who choose to use the above entitlements must create and use a separate binary”.

“This change means that developers may include either entitlement in their existing dating app, but still must limit its use to the app in the Netherlands storefront and on devices running iOS or iPadOS,” the company said.

The Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) has so far fined Apple $55 million for failing to satisfy its order and if the tech giant further fails to comply with its order, the consumer watchdog may impose another periodic penalty payments with possibly higher penalties this time around.

The Dutch regulator has been levying its fines in $5.5 million increments on Apple, for failing to address its demands to allow dating apps to use alternate formats of payments.

Apple said it still disagrees with the ACM’s original order and “are appealing it”.

“In the meantime, the changes we’ve made today demonstrate Apple’s ongoing commitment to fulfill its legal obligations in the Netherlands,” said the tech giant.

Apple is providing updated and morespecific criteria to evaluate non-Apple payment service providers that developers of dating apps in the Netherlands may use.

WhatsApp sees 7 bn voice messages daily, unveils new tools

Meta-owned WhatsApp said that people are sending 7 billion voice messages daily on average, all of which are protected by end-toend encryption.

Now, users can listen to a voice message outside of the chat so they can multitask or read and respond to other messages.

The users can also play voice messages at 1.5x or 2x speeds to listen to messages faster on both regular and forwarded messages.

“...all Snapchatters across iOS and Android can seamlessly share their favourite YouTube videos with their friends straight through the Snapchat Camera -- no more pesky copying and pasting required!” the company said in a blogpost.

This is the first time that YouTube links can be shared visually to Snapchat Stories and one-on-one Snaps, while still accessing the Camera and full suite of Snapchat Creative Tools for self-expression.

“When recording a voice message, you can now pause the recording and resume when ready, in case you’re interrupted or need to gather your thoughts,” WhatsApp said.

“If you pause when listening to a voice message, you can pick up where you left off when you return to the chat,” said WhatsApp.

Snapchat said that over 2 billion logged-in users visit YouTube every month to tune into videos that help them find new music, learn different skills, catch up on news, and discover more about the world around them.

“With this new integration, we are making it easier than ever for these viewers to send their favourite clips and videos right where they are already talking with their friends on Snapchat,” it added.

The company announced new features that will make the voice message experience on WhatsApp even better.

While waveform visualisation shows a visual representation of the sound on the voice message to help follow the recording, with the draft Preview tool, you can listen to your voice messages before sending them.

Popular social network Snapchat has announced that users across iOS and Android can now share YouTube videos directly to the platform.

“Our tappable YouTube stickers bring Snapchatters directly to the video within the YouTube app or in their preferred mobile browser,” the company said.

WhatsApp launched voice messaging in 2013.

“Voice messages have made it quick and easy for people to have more expressive conversations. Showing emotion or excitement through voice is more natural than text, and in many situations, voice messages are the preferred form of communication on WhatsApp,” said the company.

Personality traits are connected to well-being post retirement A recent study has found new links between older adults’ personality traits, the routes they took to quit their jobs, and their well-being after exiting the workforce.

The findings of the study were published in the journal ‘PLOS ONE’.

As the world’s population of older adults grows, communities and policymakers are increasingly interested in the well-being of those leaving the labour market. Researchers have begun to explore how different exit paths -mandatory retirement versus voluntary retirement, for instance -- may be associated with subsequent life

satisfaction.

To help clarify, Kesavayuth and colleagues analysed data from more than 2,000 adults aged 50 to 75 who participated in the British Household Panel Survey. The dataset included an assessment of participants’ “Big Five” personality traits -- a standard evaluation of personality -- and subsequent life satisfaction after participants left their jobs, whether voluntarily or not, without plans to begin working again.

Statistical analysis of the data uncovered associations between the routes people took to exit their jobs and their subsequent satisfaction with life, income, and leisure. However, these associations did indeed vary according to their personality traits.

For example, the trait of conscientiousness was linked to increased satisfaction with leisure time for older adults who underwent mandatory retirement, and to increased life satisfaction for people who became unemployed.

The authors suggested that conscientiousness might act as a “psychological buffer,” with conscientious individuals being more proactive in finding new fulfilling life patterns.

Among people who retired early, extraversion was linked to lower satisfaction with life, income, and leisure.

However, for people who stopped working due to ill health or caregiving demands, extraversion was linked to higher satisfaction with leisure time. The authors speculate that extraverts might miss social relationships at work, but might also be motivated to find sociable, rewarding hobbies.

Associations were also found for the traits of agreeableness, openness, and neuroticism. These associations do not confirm any causal relationships between the various factors, and proposed explanations can only be speculative at this stage. However, the findings could help guide targeted interventions and policies to boost the well-being of ageing adults. Such efforts could be especially relevant during the current mass exodus of workers from the labour force in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The authors added, “Our study uncovered associations between the routes people took to exit their jobs and their subsequent satisfaction with life, income, and leisure. These associations varied according to people’s personality traits. Conscientious individuals were more proactive in finding new fulfilling life patterns.

Eating two servings of avocados a week may lower risk of cardiovascular disease A new study has suggested that eating two or more servings of avocado weekly was associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease.

The study was published in ‘Journal of the American Heart Association’. Avocados contain dietary fibre, unsaturated fats especially monounsaturated fat (healthy fats) and other favourable components that have been associated with good cardiovascular health. Clinical trials have previously found avocados have a positive impact on cardiovascular risk factors including high cholesterol.

Researchers have believed this is the first, large, prospective study to support the positive association between higher avocado consumption and lower cardiovascular events, such as coronary heart disease and stroke.

“Our study provides further evidence that the intake of plant-sourced unsaturated fats can improve diet quality and is an important component in cardiovascular disease prevention,” said Lorena S. Pacheco, PhD, M.P.H., R.D.N., lead author of the study and a postdoctoral research fellow in the nutrition department at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston.

“These are particularly notable findings since the consumption of avocados has risen steeply in the U.S. in the last 20 years, according to data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture,’ she added For 30 years, researchers followed more than 68,780 women (ages 30 to 55 years) from the Nurses’ Health Study and more than 41,700 men (ages 40 to 75 years) from the Health Professionals Follow-up Study. All study participants were free of cancer, coronary heart disease and stroke at the start of the study and living in the United States.

Researchers documented 9,185 coronary heart disease events and 5,290 strokes during more than 30 years of follow-up.

Researchers assessed participants’ diet using food frequency questionnaires given at the beginning of the study and then every

four years. They calculated avocado intake from a questionnaire item that asked about the amount consumed and frequency. One serving equalled half of an avocado or a half cup of avocado.

The analysis found: 4After considering a wide range of cardiovascular risk factors and overall diet, study participants who ate at least two servings of avocado each week had a 16 per cent lower risk of cardiovascular disease and a 21 per cent lower risk of coronary heart disease, compared to those who never or rarely ate avocados.

4Based on statistical modelling, replacing half a serving daily of margarine, butter, egg, yoghurt, cheese or processed meats such as bacon with the same amount of avocado was associated with a 16 per cent to 22 per cent lower risk of cardiovascular disease events.

“We desperately need strategies to improve intake of AHA-recommended healthy diets -- such as the Mediterranean diet -- that is rich in vegetables and fruits,” said Anderson, who is a professor and dean of the Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science at University of California San Diego.

“Although no one food is the solution to routinely eating a healthy diet, this study is evidence that avocados have possible health benefits. This is promising because it is a food item that is popular, accessible, desirable and easy to include in meals eaten by many Americans at home and in restaurants,” Cheryl concluded.

Lung diseases causing bacteria thrive on red blood cells

Mycobacteria, a group of pathogenic bacteria that cause diseases like leprosy and tuberculosis in humans, are associated with red blood cells at lung infection sites.

Microbiology Spectrum, showed that pathogenic mycobacteria attach to human red blood cells, then capitalise on the relationship to multiply.

Mycobacteria had previously been found outside macrophages at infection sites; the new findings suggest that the presence of those extracellular mycobacteria may be a result of the relationship with red blood cells.

M. tuberculosis and other mycobacteria implicated in lung disease are now known to live in macrophages - white blood cells that engulf and kill pathogens. Mycobacteria turn up in blood and sputum coughed up by sick patients.

Red blood cells, although also found in the sputum of tuberculosis patients, have not yet been specifically studied in disease progression.

But, “our research will change the conventional common sense that mycobacteria grow intracellularly”, said Yukiko Nishiuchi, Associate Professor at Hiroshima University in Japan.

The team obtained lung tissue samples from five mice infected with two species of Mycobacteria - M. avium and M. intracellulare - as well as from a human patient infected with Mycobacterium avium subsp. hominissuis (MAH).

Microscopic examination revealed red blood

cells were co-located with mycobacteria in both the capillary vessels and granulomas (clumps of immune cells) of mice and human lung tissues.

To assess the relationship of the mycobacteria to human red blood cells, the team monitored their growth with and without the blood cells. They found that MAH grew more in the presence of red blood cells, multiplying at a rate dependent on blood cell concentration.

Their exponential growth was even faster than the growth of MAH inside macrophages - typically targeted as parasitic hosts by mycobacteria.

The findings, published in the journal

Men and women process pain signal differently Researchers have found that neurons in the spinal cord process pain signals differently in women compared to men.

The finding, published in the journal BRAIN, could lead to better and more personalized treatments for chronic pain, which are desperately needed, especially in light of the opioid epidemic.

Although it has long been known that women and men experience pain differently, most pain research uses male rodents.

The new study is unique because it used female and male spinal cord tissue from both rats and humans (generously donated by deceased individuals and their families).

By examining the spinal cord tissue in the laboratory, the researchers were able to

show that a neuronal growth factor called BDNF plays a major role in amplifying spinal cord pain signalling in male humans and male rats, but not in female humans or female rats. When female rats had their ovaries removed, the difference disappeared, pointing to a hormonal connection.

“Developing new pain drugs requires a detailed understanding of how pain is processed at the biological level.

This new discovery lays the foundation for the development of new treatments to help those suffering from chronic pain,” said Dr Annemarie Dedek, lead author of the study and now a MITACSand Eli Lilly-funded industrial research fellow at Carleton University and The Ottawa Hospital.

The result, published in the Virology Journal, showed that within 20 seconds of UV exposure, the spores’ growth dropped by 99 per cent.

With a cheap retrofit, they could also be used in many standard lighting fixtures, giving them a “unique appeal” for public spaces, said Christina Guzzo, Assistant Professor in the department of biological sciences at the varsity.

“We’re at a critical time where we need to use every single possible stop to get us out of this pandemic. Every mitigation strategy that can be easily implemented should be used,” Guzzo said.

UV lights kill viruses through radiation. The

The researchers then created droplets containing coronaviruses or HIV, to mimic typical ways people encounter viruses in public, such as from coughing, sneezing and bleeding.

The droplets were then exposed to UV light and placed in a culture to see if any of the virus remained active. With just 30 seconds of exposure, the virus’s ability to infect dropped by 93 per cent.

Upon testing the viruses at different concentrations, they found samples with more viral particles were more resistant to the UV lights. But even with a viral load so high Guzzo calls it “the worst-case scenario,” infectivity

dropped 88 per cent. Guzzo noted that UV-LEDs are cheap and could be easy to retrofit in existing light fixtures, and that the bulbs are long-lasting and simple to maintain.

“You could disinfect in a way that wouldn’t be infringing on people’s enjoyment of that everyday ‘normal’ life that they long for,” Guzzo says.

But the lights aren’t harmless, and there’s a reason for wearing sunscreen and sunglasses - UV radiation damages nucleic acid, and repeated, prolonged exposure is harmful.

That’s why Guzzo said the lights should be used when public spaces are empty, such as vacated buses that have finished their routes, or empty elevators travelling between floors.

Escalator handrails could be continuously disinfected by putting UV lights in the underground part of the track, cleaning it with each rotation.

Actress Nushrratt Bharuccha now has started the shoot for ‘Selfiee’ in Bhopal.

Bollywood actor John Abraham, who is busy publicising his upcoming movie ‘Attack’, was quizzed about his appearance in a south Indian movie, which apparently irked the actor.

Speaking about kickstarting the shoot, Nushrratt said, “I am super excited to be a part of the Selfiee cast and looking forward to be working on one more film with Akshay Kumar. And that too right after Ram Setu, which makes it even more special!”

John, who was visibly irked with the question, asserted his choice not to act in regional movies.

‘Selfiee’ is helmed by director Raj A Mehta, with whom Nushrratt had worked with on ‘Ajeeb Daastaans’.

Of late, there have been reports that John will be seen in an important role in Prabhas’s upcoming multi-lingual action movie ‘Salaar’.

On reuniting with him, Nushrratt said, “Of course my director Raj Mehta, who I have last done Ajeeb Datsaans with, he is one crazy fun director! And him and Akshay sir on set, it will definitely be a laugh riot all day every day! Selfiee is going to be one mad fun ride!”

When quizzed about the same, John said, “I am not acting in any regional films. I don’t know where these speculations started. I will never do supporting roles in regional films. I am a Bollywood actor.”

Adding to it, she said, “I’m also really looking forward to working with Emraan sir and Diana. I’ve enjoyed watching their movies and excited to be working with them on Selfiee.”

With this, it is confirmed that John isn’t a part of Prabhas’s upcoming magnum opus ‘Salaar’, but John’s way of answering the question has raised eyebrows.

While some south Indian websites reported the incident, they have raised a question on what was so offensive that John had reacted in that way.

John Abraham was earlier quizzed regarding the box office clash of his movie ‘Attack’ with Ram Charan, NTR-starrer ‘RRR’. John’s cold reply to that question was discussed among fans as well.

Abhishek Bachchan on the enduring power of the big screen Abhishek Bachchan is an actor with an impeccable sense of humour and wit.

While he may be known for serious or intense roles, the actor is set to bring in a new flavour with his soon to be released social comedy ‘Dasvi’, which also stars Yami Gautam and Nimrat Kaur.

In a recent conversation with IANS, Abhishek spoke about collaborating with a first-time director for the film, the changing space of content industry courtesy OTT and his liking towards the genre of comedy.

For him, the script of ‘Dasvi’ is what did the trick, something that he would love to watch on screen as a part of the audience, “I think it’s predominantly the script and the story was very unique. It was so new and fresh, and it was all about how you were saying that, and it is a film which I really wanted to watch. That is the reason I signed up for it.”

The film has been helmed by debutant director Tushar Jalota. The actor opines that it’s always great to work with first-time directors as they bring a whole different energy to the table. Abhishek says, “They have a very unique voice and a very unique outlook on life. I feel they don’t come with any preconceived notions and that’s exciting because it gives you a fresh perspective.”

Ask him how would he define his character in the film or if there’s someone in the history of cinema that he has modelled this character on and pat comes the reply, “I don’t think there is anybody like him. I like to think he is very unique. He was a very fun character to play, I had the most fun in front of the camera.”

The actor loves working in the genre of comedy as it challenges him as an artiste, “I absolutely

enjoyed doing comedy. I even feel it is one of the most difficult genres to play. Also, I have come off some very, very intense work and was looking to do a bit of a light-hearted film and I am so glad that this film happened.”

‘Dasvi’ is coming out simultaneously on two streaming platforms, Netflix and Jio Cinema on April 7. With the content industry migrating towards OTT majorly, what future does it hold for the medium of cinema in his opinion. Abhishek feels that cinemas and OTT will co-exist.

He says, “The same debate about cinemas getting finished occurred when VHS came along in the early 1980s. It happened to an extent that I remember the films were released on VHS on the same date they were released in the movies to avoid piracy.”

“Then came television and the debate was once again renewed.

But, the theatres are still operating and have undergone major evolution with regards to multiplexes. The same thing is happening with OTT as well.”

“However, this is a different medium of experience where different stories are to be told. I think the convenience of OTT platforms mixed with the quality of content that’s available over it makes it very lucrative to the audience.

OTT and cinema would rather complement each other,” he concluded.

“I am grateful to each and everyone who gave so much love to me as Neha and especially Ahmed and Sajid sir for giving me this role and I really miss all the fun times we had on the sets,” she added.

Talking about the film, Disha said, “It doesn’t feel like 4 years that ‘Baaghi 2’ was released but yesterday. Neha has my heart, and the character will live with me forever. The emotions that I went through while essaying the role, I haven’t completely been able to get the character out of my head because she had such intensity in her emotions, in her sadness, her love, everything.”

I’ll keep acting till the day I die: Sanjay Dutt You can take an artist from art but never the art from an artist, just like veteran superstar Sanjay Dutt who made a roaring comeback to Indian cinema after battling cancer.

For a recap, amid the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Sanjay Dutt, 62, was diagnosed with lung cancer and the actor went through extensive treatment in Mumbai. Months later, Dutt announced that he was cancer-free.

After successfully battling the fatal disease, Dutt has made a comeback to the Indian cinema and has signed some of the most special and highly anticipated projects.

‘Munna Bhai’ actor opened up about his love for Indian cinema and how he feels proud to be a part of this industry.

“I am an artist and till the day I die I’ll keep acting if God permits me to,” he said.

The ‘Khalnayak’ actor added, “I love what I do. I love the characters I play, I love the body of work I have done, and it’s been 45 years I have been in the industry, and I see the young talent coming up.”

Dutt also praised his ‘KGF: Chapter 2’ co-star Yash for achieving heights at such a young age, with his magnificent

performance on screen.

“I look at Yash and I look at myself 20-30 years back and to see them have this kind of achievement makes me proud.

You know being sitting there and seeing all the boys Ranbir, Yash, Ram Charan and JrNTR and all these guys, it makes me proud that in our family of the Indian film fraternity I feel proud to be a part of it,” he said.

“Super excited and happy to announce our first children’s book as co-authors. All children wish for a loving companion, and for Inni, that companion will be her new little puppy, Bobo! Inni & Bobo Find Each Other is a heart-warming story of friendship and family and a story we have poured all of our love into. It is also the first in a series of Inni and Bobo books,” Soha wrote.

Deep down I so wished papa could finish ‘Sharmaji Namkeen’: Ranbir Kapoor While it was a very special time for Bollywood actor Ranbir Kapoor to promote his father and late actor Rishi Kapoor’s last film ‘Sharmaji Namkeen’, Ranbir says how he wished his father could have finished the film.

The story of the film revolves around a retired man Brij Gopal Sharma which was supposed to be played by Rishi Kapoor. Unfortunately, Rishi Kapoor died on April 30, 2020, when the film was unfinished. Eventually, veteran actor Paresh Rawal took up the character of Sharmaji and finished the film.

Taking a moment to thank the veteran actor for his graceful move, Ranbir said, “I am extremely grateful that an actor of Mr Paresh Rawal’s calibre had stepped in and agreed to finish this film. I being an extremely big admirer of my father’s work and seen the kind of passion and excitement he had for this character; perhaps that’s why there is a part of me which always wanted that I hope he had finished this film.”

However, Ranbir also added that watching two actors in the same role is exciting.

“The experience to see two different actors

with two different styles, two different great actors performing the same character was such a refreshing and entertaining take on moviemaking. I think the audience won’t get confused because after two minutes you won’t even release that two different personalities are

performing the same character,” he said.

Randhir Kapoor suffering from dementia, reveals his nephew Ranbir Kapoor Veteran star Randhir Kapoor is currently battling dementia.

The news of his diagnosis was revealed by his nephew and actor Ranbir Kapoor in a recent interview. During the interaction, Ranbir mentioned that Randhir recently watched his father Rishi Kapoor’s last film ‘Sharmaji Namkeen’ and had been asking for him.

“My uncle Randhir Kapoor, who is going through an early stage of dementia, came to me after the film and said, ‘Tell dad that he is amazing, and where is he, let’s call him’. Art crosses the boundaries of medical conditions...

And a good piece of storytelling really embodies that,” Ranbir shared.

Rishi Kapoor had died due to cancer on April 30, 2020, just before he could complete filming for ‘Sharmaji Namkeen’. Thankfully, Paresh Rawal stepped into his shoes to finish the film.

Earlier, Ranbir had opened up about how keen his father was to complete his film ‘Sharmaji Namkeen’ while battling cancer.

In a video, he had said, “The show must go on -- you all have heard it, but I have seen my father live that. After his demise, we thought the film wouldn’t get completed. We thought of trying VFX or I could wear prosthetics and complete the role, but nothing was working out. It was

a tough time for all of us. And that’s when Mr. Paresh Rawal stepped in. It was very generous of him to take up this challenge.”

Did humans inherit love of alcohol from monkeys?

M

onkeys are known to routinely consume fruit containing alcohol, shedding light on our own taste for booze, finds a study that supports the 'drunken monkey' hypothesis.

A University of California Berkeley biologist Robert Dudley, in his book The Drunken Monkey: Why We Drink and Abuse Alcohol, released in 2014, proposed that human attraction to booze arose millions of years ago, when our ape and monkey ancestors discovered that the scent of alcohol led them to ripe, fermenting and nutritious fruit.

To explore, researchers at California State University, Northridge (CSUN) collected fruit eaten and discarded by black-handed spider monkeys (Ateles geoffroyi) in Panama.

They found that the alcohol concentration in the fruit was typically between 1 per cent and 2 per cent by volume, a by-product of natural fermentation by yeasts that eat sugar in ripening fruit.

Moreover, the researchers collected urine from these free-ranging monkeys and

found that the urine contained secondary metabolites of alcohol. This result shows that the animals were actually utilising the alcohol for energy - it wasn't just passing through their bodies.

"For the first time, we have been able to show, without a shadow of a doubt, that wild primates, with no human interference, consume fruit-containing ethanol," said primatologist Christina Campbell, a CUSN professor of anthropology.

"This is just one study, and more need to be done, but it looks like there may be some truth to that 'drunken monkey' hypothesis - that the proclivity of humans to consume alcohol stems from a deep-rooted affinity of frugivorous (fruit-eating) primates for naturally occurring ethanol within ripe fruit," she added.

The study, which appeared in the journal Royal Society Open Science, showed that the fruit that spider monkeys collected were from the jobo tree Spondias mombin and were a major component of the spider monkey diet.

But the fruit also has been used for millennia

by Indigenous human populations throughout Central and South America to make chicha a fermented alcoholic beverage.

Five of the urine samples from six spider monkeys contained secondary metabolites of ethanol or drinking alcohol.

"The monkeys were likely eating the fruit with ethanol for the calories," Campbell said. "They would get more calories from fermented fruit than they would from unfermented fruit. The higher calories mean more energy."

However, Dudley said he doubts that the monkeys feel the inebriating effects of alcohol that humans appreciate.

"They're probably not getting drunk, because their guts are filling before they reach inebriating levels," he said. "But it is providing some physiological benefit. Maybe, also, there's an anti-microbial benefit within the food that they're consuming, or the activity of the yeast and the microbes may be predigesting the fruit. You can't rule that out."

The need for the monkeys' high caloric intake may similarly have influenced human ancestors' decisions when choosing which fruit to eat, Campbell said.

Love Beer? Know all about this drink Beer is widely associated with beer bellies but on the contrary, it is actually a very healthy drink. Probably one of the healthiest drinks one can have as it is made mostly from barley but can also have small quantities of rice or wheat.

takes about a fortnight for a beer to be ready for bottling during which time it is processed at temperatures ranging from 10C to 20C. The processing temperature can go as high as even 25C in the case of ales.

The bitterness is created by the addition of hops, a flower that is very bitter and imparts its bitterness and flavour to the beer. Beer has all the natural goodness of barley, except for its starch, which is converted during the beer-making process into sugar with the help of enzymes available in the barley malt itself. This sugar is then converted into alcohol during the fermentation process, leaving all the other ingredients of the malted barley in the finished beer.

However, plant hygiene and quality control play a huge role in the final quality of beers and even a small deviation in the standard manufacturing procedures can result in the beer not meeting its final quality parameters. Beers can also be gold coloured or dark depending on the malt being used. The beer is bottled at about 3C and then immediately pasteurised before it is labelled and packed for dispatch to the market.

A normal beer with about 4.5 per cent alcohol contains less than half a calorie per ml of beer while a strong beer with about 7 per cent alcohol can have just three-fourths of a calorie per ml.

Beer has, however, for long been clubbed with other liquors in India for all regulations pertaining to the manufacture, distribution and sale.

Nobody can trade in beer unless one gets an excise license from the concerned state government.

The same norms as applicable to liquor are applicable to beer on manufacturing, wholesale, retail sale and even on-trade sale, i.e., in bars, clubs and hotels. There is even a limit to how much beer one can keep at home - normally just about a case of beer is allowed in most states across the country. This in fact is quite the opposite of how beer is viewed in Europe, the US and other developed countries where it is considered more as a fun drink to be had in the company of friends, at parties and even in solitude at home.

Beer comes in a number of styles, the main ones being a lager, pilsner, ale, wheat, among others. Yeast plays a major part in the production of beer as it converts the sugars into alcohol and different yeasts impart different flavours and tastes to the beer. It

Beer shelf life which was traditionally considered only three months in the sixties has now increased to 12 months with improved processes and manufacturing systems. However, Beer should be kept in a cool place away from light in order to retain its original flavours and taste. Manufacturers are now more focused on quality and the entry of international brewers into the country has spurred domestic manufacturers to improve their processes in order to match international quality standards.

While this has resulted in increased consumption of beer, the per capita consumption of beer in India continues to be abysmally low when compared to other countries, being less than a litre. Compare this with the per capita consumption in Germany and Austria and even in Seychelles of over 100 litres! Obviously, we have a long distance to cover but this can only happen with a helping hand from the government and distancing beer from the liquor regulations.

e are now one-quarter of the way through 2022 and after two years of being in and out of changes you may be starting to get back into the fast-paced lifestyle you once had.

We have discussed some steps to keep in mind to help make lifestyle changes sustainable and easier in the long term.

1. Create a shopping list and 2. Plan ahead Before you head over to the shops, create a list of the items you may need to stock up from your pantry or fridge. It can be challenging to remember all the items you need just off the top of your head. Spending just five to ten minutes in a week or fortnight may save you much more than that whilst in the supermarket.

To help with your shopping list you may find it helpful to also think ahead of what meals you may have for the week. You may even find yourself having to do less cooking and shopping as a result. A great example of this could be deciding to cook slightly larger portions of dinner and packing these ahead of time for the next day's lunch. This not only saves the hassle of thinking of what to make for lunch, but it allows you to portion out your meals and avoid overeating.

What foods to try and incorporate into your

weekly shopping list -Fibre-rich grains such as lentils, legumes, oats, quinoa, basmati rice, multigrain atta, high fibre bread, cereals, and whole grains.

-A variety of seasonal fruits and vegetables of your choice. The more variety and colours you include the more vitamins and minerals you will be consuming. Frozen vegetables are also nutritious if you are unable to find certain fresh vegetables of your choice. We should be aiming for at least five serves of vegetables and two serves of fruits on an average day.

-Think of the variety of protein sources you will use throughout the week. For a

vegetarian or plant-based diet you may choose foods such as lentils, legumes, chickpeas, soya, beans etc. For nonvegetarians, you may have a variety of meats however the recommendation would be to reduce processed meats and limit red meat to no more than two or three times per week. Including other protein sources such as fish, eggs, and chicken will help to provide a variety of choices. When choosing animal proteins to consume regularly, aim to have lean meats. The general recommendation for protein is between two to three serves daily.

-Snack options that are high in fibre and/ or protein and certain fats to keep you full for longer such as nuts, seeds and yoghurt.

Reduce frequent intake of processed snacks that may be higher in salt, sugar or fats.

-Sources of calcium such as dairy foods (cheese, yoghurt, milk) or dairy alternatives.

Calcium requirements increase with age and are recommended at between two to four serves daily.

-Herbs and spices such as saunf (fennel seeds), haldi (turmeric), ginger, garlic, pepper, chilli and cinnamon for added flavour and extra health benefits for the body. Add as many herbs and spices to your liking to help reduce the addition of salt to foods.

Trevally cooked in a mild and flavoursome mustard sauce Ingredients:

Spice:

1 med size Trevally fish in cutlets

1 tbsp mustard seeds 3 tbsp oil or mustard oil 1 inch ginger chopped 5 cloves garlic chopped 2-3 green chillies chopped 2 tbsp vinegar 1 tbsp panch phoran (spice blend) 1 onion finely chopped 3/4 tsp turmeric 1 cup coconut milk Salt to taste

Marinate: 1/2 tsp red chilli powder 1/2 tsp turmeric powder 1/2 tsp salt

Method: 1. Marinate the trevally cutlets with salt, red chilli powder and turmeric powder. Mix well and refrigerate until ready to use.

2. Heat 1 tbsp oil or mustard oil in a non stick pan.

3. Stir in the mustard seeds, when it crackles add the chopped ginger, garlic, green chillies and fry lightly.

4. Add vinegar and remove from the heat. Allow to cool a little.

Transfer this mixture into a mixer jar and grind to a fine paste.

5. Heat the remaining mustard oil in another non stick pan.

6. Add the panch phoran and chopped onions to the oil and fry until translucent.

7. Stir in the ground paste and mix. Pour in about ½ cup of water, salt and turmeric powder and mix well.

8. Pour in the coconut milk and stir well to mix. Bring to boil and allow to simmer for a few mins until gravy thickens slightly.

9. Meanwhile fry the travelly cutlets until golden in colour.

Drain on paper.

10. Serve on a platter along with the hot gravy and garnish with

coriander.

Serves 2-4

Variation:

In step 9 gently add the fish pieces and stir slowly to mix. Cover the pan and cook until the fish is tender.

Garnish:

Fresh Coriander Leaves

Serve:

Serve hot with Basmati Rice or Roti
