CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE

November in La Quinta is something truly special. The desert mornings are crisp, our city streets are alive with renewed energy, and the return of our seasonal residents brings a wonderful sense of community connection. You can feel the buzz everywhere; in our restaurants, local shops, and throughout our neighborhoods as the season ahead begins to unfold.

This month, gratitude is at the forefront. I’m thankful for the many people and businesses who continue to make La Quinta such a vibrant place to live, work, and visit. From our dedicated small business owners to the hospitality professionals who welcome visitors from around the world, it’s your collective effort that keeps our “Gem of the Desert” shining.

One of the highlights of this season is the La Quinta Art Celebration, returning once again to transform the Civic Center Campus into a world-class showcase of creativity. This nationally recognized event not only celebrates artistic excellence but also drives tremendous economic and cultural value to our community. It’s a perfect example of what happens when art, tourism, and local spirit come together, and I encourage everyone to attend and experience the inspiration firsthand.

As always, the Chamber continues to champion local business through collaboration, connection, and community engagement. With the holidays approaching, I invite everyone to Shop La Quinta Local and dine in our restaurants, explore our boutiques, and support our service providers. Every local purchase strengthens our economy and reinforces the unique character that defines our city.

Looking ahead, we have more to celebrate, including upcoming ribbon cuttings, networking mixers, and the always-anticipated La Quinta Car Show. Each event reflects our ongoing commitment to growth, unity, and local pride.

As we gather with family and friends this Thanksgiving, let’s take a moment to appreciate the community we’ve built together, one rooted in gratitude, generosity, and genuine connection.

See you around town and thank you for keeping it local!

An International Diamond Society award-winning REALTOR® with Coldwell Banker Realty, the desert’s premier real estate firm, Jeff Fishbein, widely known as Mr. La Quinta, has built an impressive reputation for helping both home sellers and buyers achieve their real estate goals. Open House MEET & GREET MEET

Where Everyone Belongs:

Kiki’s Inclusive Cooking Club

In the middle of the dining room, hours before Kiki’s La Quinta opened to the public, parents helped their sons and daughters learn to make focaccia bread and mozzarella sticks for the first time, led by restaurant chefs.

“Look how awesome this is,” said Sara Castillo, who brings her daughter, Alyssa, to the monthly “Inclusive Culinary Club” started by restaurant owner Allie Baker and parents like Castillo.

The classes provide people with autism and Down syndrome the opportunity to learn cooking skills while making friends, laughing and chatting with each other.

“This is giving him the opportunity to learn life skills in a social environment outside of the home,” Lisa Valerio, of La Quinta, said while watching her son, Nathan, who is autistic and unable to speak, make mozzarella sticks.

She asked Nathan how the classes made him feel: “Happy,” he said through his AAC Device which he uses to communicate.

Ranging in age from 14 to 52, their clothes shielded with white aprons adorned with green logos with the slogan “Empowering Cooks One Meal at a Time,” the group meets the second Thursday of the month at Kiki’s Italian restaurant.

“All these great moms teach us how to run this program,” Baker said. “The moms of

this group are superheroes.”

Baker, a La Quinta resident, also founded Art Major Studios in the Vons shopping center where people of all ages and abilities are always welcome.

The cooking classes draw from 12 to 20 families, Baker said.

“The moms are all a dream,” Baker said. “The kids are so positive and love to explore and try new things. It’s the best thing I’ve ever done.”

Classes are held when the restaurant is closed, so the students can be loud and socialize without disturbing anyone, she said.

“All of our kids have sensory needs with their disabilities,” Castillo said.

Castillo approached Baker with the idea of starting a cooking class when at Art Major Studios with her daughter, Alyssa, who is autistic.

“Alyssa loves to cook and one of her favorite foods is spaghetti,” Castillo said, which they learned to make in one of the classes.

The program also helps give Alyssa a feeling of independence, she said.

Like others in the program, Amanda Dahl’s 21-year-old son, William, who has autism, looks forward to the classes.

“It’s a huge social opportunity for our kids,” Dahl said. “When we can find activities that our kids enjoy it’s a good thing.”

Linking Families through Nonprofits

A lot of the parents are connected through some nonprofits in the valley that provide resources for special needs families.

Renee Griffin, for example, formed Building Bridges for Special Needs CV, a nonprofit social media platform that provides information about programs, resources, events and other nonprofits that would be of interest to families with children who have Down syndrome and autism.

The goal of Building Bridges is to help foster new ideas for programs to add to, but not replicate what already exists.

“We have grown into such a tight-knit community,” said Griffin, of Palm Desert, who was at Kiki’s with her daughter, Tory, who has Down syndrome and autism. “She loves food and loves to try to create and cook. She has been to all of the classes,” Griffin said.

Tory is also enrolled in para-karate classes at Seiden-Juku in La Quinta, which offers the classes for free to people of all ages with special needs, another program that helps the students build confidence and socialize.

“She (Tory) got her black belt a few months ago,” Griffin said, the culmination of a 10-year journey.

Valerio, a La Quinta resident, founded the nonprofit Fenixia Foundation following the birth of her son in 2003. Long before that, Valerio was involved with helping orphanages and conducting educational outreach efforts in the Philippines.

She created Fenixia with a vision for bringing parents, teachers, therapists and the community together “to really learn about our children with special needs,” not just in the U.S. but globally. The name is from the flower Fenixia which is only found in the Philippines but is a member of the colorful daisy family which grows around the world.

“It is 100% a volunteer operation,” Valerio said.

The nonprofit puts on social and wellness events every month for people with special needs, including nights out bowling, going to an arcade, karaoke nights, adventures like going up the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway and more.

A Special Gala Planned

Building Bridges and Fenixia Foundation are teaming up to host the second Special Needs Gala on January 31, 2026. They hosted the first gala in 2024 and the kids were treated like royalty with a memoryfilled night that began with a red carpet arrival, photos, food and gift bags.

They got their hair done at local salons that supported the event and dressed to the nines with boutonnieres and corsages then danced the night away in an atmosphere that was warm and inclusive.

Parents are always looking for opportunities for their kids to learn and experience new things while also socializing, Valerio said.

“If we don’t see it, we create it,” she said. For information about Fenixia, available resources, upcoming events including the gala, or to make donations including formals for the dance, visit www. fenixiafoundation.org or call 650-4641373.

Building Bridges can be found at www.facebook.com/

Desert Arc

Providing Valuable Employment and Job Training Programs for its Clients

Desert Arc, a leading nonprofit established in 1959, offers comprehensive services for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities within the Coachella Valley, the Morongo Basin, and desert communities. The organization is proud of its highly-successful Employment Services Program that supports its clients in preparing for, securing, and maintaining meaningful employment within the community. Desert Arc’s clients are proud of the independence and fulfillment they experience from employment and also a job well done!

“Ivette is a shining example of someone pursuing their professional dreams through Desert Arc’s Employment Services Program,” said Michelle Peters, President/CEO of Desert Arc. “With a deep passion for baking and aspirations of becoming a pastry chef, Ivette has been

on a dedicated career journey for the past 15 years. Since first joining Desert Arc, she has participated in numerous on-the-job training programs designed to support her growth in the baking industry. Today, as a paid intern at Bread And Flours, Ivette continues to rise – –perfecting her craft and delighting others with her cookies and scrumptious sweet treats.”

Ivette was born and raised in Coachella and lives with her parents and two siblings, with whom she is very close. Ivette was diagnosed with Autism in elementary school, and came to Desert Arc’s Program 15 years ago, from a referral from the Department of Rehabilitation Services. Since then, she has participated in many of Desert Arc’s programs and activities, where she enjoys meeting other clients and working with staff. Ivette from day one at Desert Arc has felt comfortable, and considers Desert Arc a part of her extended family.

In the Employment Services Program, Ivette has really hit her stride. This Desert Arc program begins with individualized assessments to identify strengths, interest, and support needs. Clients then receive training in workplace readiness, job development, and placement services tailored to their individual career goals. Once employed, Desert Arc’s program participants benefit from ongoing job coaching and follow-up support to ensure long-term success.

As part of this program, Desert Arc offers a Paid Internship Program (PIP) in partnership with the Inland

Regional Center. This Paid Internship provides participants the opportunity to explore career interests and gain hands-on experience in real workplace settings while earning wages funded through the program. Each internship is structured to help individuals build skills, confidence, and work history, with job coaching and guidance provided throughout their mentored experience. This valuable stepping stone often leads to permanent employment opportunities and greater independence. With a focus on growth, inclusion, and empowerment, Desert Arc’s Employment Services Program helps individuals achieve their employment goals and thrive in the workplace.

Ivette graduated from Coachella Valley High School, where she was involved in several clubs and after-school activities. Some of her favorite hobbies include reading, drawing, and baking. Her dad is a Professional Chef here in the Valley, so growing up Ivette would watch him cook, and he taught her how to bake cookies and desserts, especially during the holidays. Growing up in the culinary arts world alongside her Dad, Ivette developed a true passion for baking.

For the past 4 months, Ivette has been involved in a Paid Internship Program at Bread And Flours in Palm Springs, an artisan vegan bakery offering a variety of muffins, cookies, tea cakes and breads, along with fresh pasta made from scratch – all made with no dairy or eggs. When Ivette started this internship, she was expecting to wash dishes all day. This changed quickly when Mark, the Bakery Owner, recognized her abilities right away, and soon had her helping him add the icing to cakes, tea cakes, and muffins.

Ivette is really thriving at Bread And Flours -- a job she could only dream about before. Every day Ivette assists Mark and then helps with the back of the house operations. Mark totally trusts Ivette and her capabilities, even though Mark usually does not allow anyone in his kitchen. – except Ivette! Mark continues to encourage her and teach her different icing techniques. He now trusts her to do this on her own, even when he’s out of the shop.

“I always want to learn more and more skills in the bakery business, because I love it so much,” says Ivette. “All my life I have dreamed of opening my own pastry

La Quinta’s Spirit Shines Bright

at the 2025 State of the City, Business Awards & Expo

La Quinta is a city that thrives on connection — between businesses, residents, and the spirit of community that continues to make it one of the Coachella Valley’s most vibrant destinations. That sense of unity will once again take center stage at the annual La Quinta State of the City, Business Awards, and Expo, presented by the Greater Coachella Valley Chamber of Commerce (GCVCC) in partnership with the City of La Quinta.

This year’s highly anticipated event will unfold on Wednesday, November 19, at the iconic La Quinta Resort & Club, a venue as timeless and welcoming as the city itself. Registration opens at 5:00 p.m., followed by an engaging business expo through 6:00 p.m., when the State of the City presentation and dinner begin. The evening promises a blend of celebration, insight, and inspiration — a reflection of La Quinta’s dynamic progress and enduring charm.

A Celebration of Progress and Promise

Each year, the State of the City event provides residents and business leaders an in-depth look at the milestones achieved over the past year and a glimpse into the promising projects on the horizon. Mayor Linda Evans and members of the La Quinta City Council will take the stage to share updates on key initiatives that continue to elevate the city’s quality of life — from infrastructure and sustainability efforts to community development and economic vitality.

This annual gathering is more than a speech or a dinner — it’s a moment to recognize the heart of La Quinta: its people. The event celebrates the businesses and individuals whose hard work, creativity, and community-minded spirit keep La Quinta thriving. Among the evening’s highlights are the presentation of the La Quinta Business of the Year award and other honors recognizing outstanding local achievements.

Honoring Local Excellence

Behind every thriving city are the innovators and entrepreneurs who drive progress. The Business Awards segment of the evening will spotlight these local champions — the small businesses that form the backbone of the community, the organizations that give back, and the individuals who go above and beyond to make La Quinta shine.

From family-owned establishments to forward-thinking startups, each honoree represents the unique blend of tradition and innovation that defines the city’s business landscape. This tradition of recognition not only celebrates success but also inspires others to dream big and contribute to La Quinta’s shared story.

What makes the La Quinta State of the City so special is its atmosphere of collaboration. The Business Expo, held before the main program, offers a chance for networking and discovery — a vibrant showcase of local enterprise where attendees can connect with service providers, innovators, and community organizations. It’s a reminder that La Quinta’s strength lies in the relationships that unite its residents and businesses alike.

That spirit of togetherness extends to the event’s supporters. Thanks to the generosity of local sponsors — including Title Sponsors Desert Wildlife Center and the Inland Regional Energy Network, and Presenting Sponsors Desert Care Network and Palm Springs International Film Society — the evening continues to grow in scope and impact. Their investment reflects the shared belief that when the community thrives, everyone benefits.

An Evening Not to Miss

Each year, this signature event reaches full capacity, and for good reason. Between the lively expo, inspiring addresses, elegant dinner, and recognition of local excellence, it’s an evening that captures the very essence of La Quinta — ambitious, welcoming, and full of heart.

Tickets are available for $99 for Chamber members and $115 for non-members, each including event entry and dinner seating. With interest high and seating limited, early registration is strongly encouraged. Free residents seats are available that do not include meals but include a seat and water.

For more information, sponsorship opportunities, or to secure your spot, visit www.gcvcc.org or call 760.347.0676.

As La Quinta continues to evolve and flourish, the State of the City, Business Awards, and Expo stands as a celebration of its journey — a testament to what’s possible when a community comes together with vision, pride, and purpose.
