CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE By: Jeff Fishbein Chairman of the La Quinta Chamber of Commerce

As we celebrate the Fourth of July and the 250th birthday of our nation, we have an opportunity to reflect on the values that have shaped America for two and a half centuries: freedom, opportunity, innovation, and community.

Here in La Quinta, those values are reflected every day through the entrepreneurs, small business owners, and community leaders who invest their time, talent, and resources to make our city a better place to live, work, and visit. The American spirit of pursuing a dream, building a business, and serving others remains alive and well throughout our community.

July is not only a time to celebrate our nation’s remarkable history, but also to recognize the local businesses and organizations that continue to contribute to its future. Every new business opening, every job created, and every local purchase made helps strengthen both our local economy and the principles of opportunity that have made our country successful for 250 years.

One of the most exciting things happening in La Quinta is the continued investment in new businesses that are bringing fresh energy, unique experiences, and additional reasons for residents and visitors to spend time locally. From the Classroom to the Future: IB Graduates Turn Hard Work Into Opportunity Story by: Sherry Barkas/City of La Quinta La Quinta High School senior Isabella Garcznyski is heading to the University of San Francisco in the fall, where she will major in economics with a minor in legal studies with plans to go on to law school.

Finley Fitzpatrick is going to Grand Canyon University in Arizona, where she will major in nursing. Cameron Keener is going to UC San Diego to major in real estate and development.

Ethan Miller will attend the Air Force Academy, where he will major in economics and train to become a pilot – a lifelong dream of his. Maximilian Radi is going to the US Coast Guard Academy to major in naval architecture and marine engineering.

The five were among 26 Class of 2026 seniors who completed La Quinta High School’s International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB) and graduated Summa Cum Laude on June 1, maintaining a 4.0 or higher grade-point average throughout high school.

In total, 121 of the 568 Class of 2026 graduates wore white caps and gowns for the ceremony, signifying they 8

had completed some or all of the IB coursework, program coordinator Kelly Becker said.

Ethan’s drive largely came from wanting to be a pilot.

IB is one of the most academically rigorous high school programs worldwide, requiring students to focus on critical thinking, writing and interdisciplinary analysis, Becker said.

“I just don’t like seeing B’s and C’s on a report card, and my end goal has always been (to be) a pilot, so I guess the underlying notion in the back of my mind when I take a test is if I can’t get good grades, I don’t deserve to fly,” he said.

Students must complete challenging coursework, a 4,000-word college level Extended Essay, and a Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS) project.

“The IB students willingly choose this challenge. They somehow balance IB’s demanding coursework with athletics, performing arts, jobs, clubs, leadership positions, and family responsibilities.

Their time management skills are advanced,” she said.

Driven to Succeed Four of the five students said one or both of their parents are teachers, which helped them develop good study habits.

“Both of my parents are teachers, so it was always instilled in me” to study hard, said Isabella. Her grandfather was a principal in Oregon and in elementary

Maximilian drew inspiration from his parents, who immigrated to the U.S. from Italy and Asia, and today hold Ph.D.’s in their respective fields. His mother is also an elementary school teacher, which helped as well.

Both of Cameron’s parents are teachers and his mother is an assistant principal at LQHS. “My grandma taught for 40 years as well, so there’s always been kind of an expectation. Not that my parents forced me to do anything, but they set the standard that this is what we want from you,” he said.

Cameron took five online courses at College of the Desert and a college course offered at LQHS. “I’m trying to graduate in three years to save a little bit of money,” Cameron said.

Ethan, who was also in AFJROTC, said the Air Force Academy curriculum is different from the universities, so didn’t take college courses because the credits wouldn’t be transferable.

Making Time for More To maintain high GPAs and other IB requirements meant students had to develop time management skills that allowed them to add extracurricular activities along with family and personal time.

“Don’t get me wrong, it was very hard and there were a lot of really long nights but our school culture has allowed me to do both and excel in both,” said Isabella who was on the water polo, swim and sports medicine teams, and was a member of the Associated Student Body (ASB).

“So, there’s a lot of different opportunities for students at our school and I’ve been fortunate enough to take advantage of those opportunities,” she said.

Maximilian played water polo for the school and was in the Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFJROTC).

“The school culture here lets us be so flexible,” he said. “Coaches are understanding, teachers are understanding but are not sugar coating everything.”

Finley was on the Blackhawks dance team, took college courses in French and did a dual enrollment in calculus while in high school.

“That was a lot … because the French course I did on my own time and the calculus course was just very hard and not my strong point. Putting myself in those classes really pushed me and it also helped me with time management,” she said.

“One of the greatest things this school has to offer … is the AFJROTC program.

People don’t realize it, but it’s a factory for building leadership. It’s not military, it’s character,” he said.

College and academy applications ask for leadership, extracurriculars and community service experience which he largely gained through AFJROTC. “In ROTC alone, I have 146 community service hours and I could talk about my leadership experience in the program for hours,” he said.

He visited the Air Force Academy in Colorado last year, and knew right away that’s where he belonged.

Cameron said his mother encouraged him to consider a career in real estate because he has great people skills. Moving to a different house when he was younger also influenced his career choice.

“I got to see that whole process of what it’s like to have a real estate agent and move from your old house to your new house, being in escrow and all that good stuff. I feel that it’s just something that I’m real passionate about,” Cameron said.

Finley said nursing has long been her passion.

“I’ve always been interested in the medical field, and as I looked into more careers I realized that nursing was the best fit for me because I could change specialties and I could do travel nursing or work in different hospitals. They need nurses everywhere, and I would just love to help people and connect with people that way,” she said.

Maximilian said he knew he wanted to serve his country, and chose the Coast Guard because he wants to do search and rescue.

All of the programs offered at LQHS, Maximilian said, help students shape their identities and see what they want to do in the future.

The IB program teaches students to analyze everything, Finley said. “You really get a different perspective on the knowledge you’re gaining.”

Isabella agreed, saying retention of what she learns is stronger because of the program.

Cameron was active in theater, which he said made him more comfortable speaking in front of large groups and taught him self-discipline. In one production he had to learn over 400 lines.

“It was a lot of hard work but in terms of who I am today, it was 100 percent worth it,” he said.

Tackling Complex Problems The IB curriculum helps students become more confident, more intellectually curious, and more willing to consider perspectives different from their own, Becker said.

“The Class of 2026 exemplifies what the IB Program strives to develop: knowledgeable, thoughtful, resilient, and caring young people who are prepared not only for college, but for meaningful contributions to their communities and the world,” Becker said.

CITY MANAGER’S MESSAGE By: Jon McMillen, La Quinta City Manager

Happy Independence Day, everyone! I hope you have the chance to celebrate with family and friends.

This year marks the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, establishing the official birth of the United States as a free and sovereign state, independent of the British Empire.

July 4th is a reminder also that America’s freedom was won by soldiers willing to fight – and die – for our independence.

Since that time, the U.S. Department of Defense estimates that as many as 41

million Americans have served in our military, and 1.3 million have died while doing so.

women who have served or are currently serving in our armed forces for a special Veterans Day article for The Gem.

La Quinta appreciates and honors all of our military personnel and veterans.

We have monuments in the park at Civic Center bearing the names of residents who have served and every year on Veterans Day we add more names during a ceremony held at City Hall.

We would also like to do a separate article on any La Quinta women who were part of the Rosie the Riveter movement of World War II when 6 million-plus women stepped up to work in the factories and shipyards while the men joined the military.

The majority of names on the monuments are men who have served, and we would like to meet and honor more of our women veterans.

Shake Shack Is Coming to La Quinta Bringing Burgers, Shakes and a New Community Gathering Spot to the Desert Story by: GCVCC Staff One of America’s most recognizable burger brands is getting ready to make its debut in La Quinta, and excitement is already building ahead of the restaurant’s highly anticipated opening.

Shake Shack, the New York-born restaurant company known for its madeto-order Angus beef burgers, hand-spun shakes and elevated take on classic American fare, will soon open its doors at 78772 Highway 111, giving local residents their first Shake Shack location in the city.

The new restaurant will be the company’s second location in the Coachella Valley, following the successful opening of its Palm Desert Shack on El Paseo in 2024.

Company leaders say the strong response from local guests made expanding further into the valley a natural next step.

“This is our second Shake Shack in the Coachella Valley since opening the doors of our El Paseo location in 2024,” company representatives said. “As we’re advancing our expansion to 1,500 company-owned domestic Shacks, we’re prioritizing our growth in new and existing markets to meet even more of our guests where they’re at.”

For local burger lovers, the upcoming opening means a chance to experience a brand that has grown from a humble New York City hot dog cart into an international restaurant company with a devoted following around the world.

Founded by restaurateur Danny Meyer in 2001, Shake Shack began as a hot dog cart in Manhattan’s Madison Square Park.

Created as part of an effort to support the park’s revitalization, the stand quickly became a sensation, drawing lines that stretched around city blocks.

The popularity eventually led to the opening of the first permanent Shake Shack restaurant in 2004. More than two decades later, the company has grown to more than 695 locations worldwide, including more than 450 across the United States and more than 245 international restaurants in destinations such as London, Tokyo, Seoul, Dubai, Hong Kong, Singapore and Mexico City.

While many burger concepts focus on speed alone, Shake Shack has built its reputation around what it calls elevated versions of American classics.

The company emphasizes premium ingredients, thoughtful sourcing and chef-driven preparation, creating a fast-casual dining experience rooted in hospitality.

When guests walk through the doors of the new La Quinta Shack, company representatives say they can expect the convenience and value of fast-casual dining paired with the standards of the brand’s fine-dining heritage.

Of course, much of the anticipation centers around the food.

For first-time visitors, the company recommends starting with its signature ShackBurger, featuring a made-to-order Angus beef patty topped with American cheese, lettuce, tomato and ShackSauce on a toasted potato bun.

Other fan favorites include Crinkle Cut Fries, crispy chicken sandwiches, hand-

spun shakes and house-made lemonades.

Vegetarian diners often gravitate toward the popular ‘Shroom Burger, a crispfried portobello mushroom stuffed with melted muenster and cheddar cheeses.

Guests can also look forward to Shake Shack’s rotating lineup of limited-time menu offerings. Recent examples have included Korean-inspired menu items featuring sweet-and-spicy flavors, as well as the return of the Dubai Chocolate Pistachio Shake, inspired by the viral luxury dessert trend that has captivated social media.

New Immigration Law Firm Opens in La Quinta with a Focus on Community and Personalized Service Story by: GCVCC Staff La Quinta continues to welcome new businesses that strengthen the community, and one of the newest additions is the Law Office of Eissa M. Villaseñor, an immigration law practice dedicated to helping individuals and families navigate complex legal matters with confidence and care.

Attorney Eissa M. Villaseñor, who officially opened her firm in April 2026, brings more than 15 years of immigration law experience to the Coachella Valley.

Her professional journey has included roles in private practice, nonprofit organizations, and federal government service, giving her a unique perspective on the legal system and the people it serves.

For Villaseñor, the decision to pursue law was rooted in a desire to help others.

“Law is a field that allows me to be of service,” she says. Early in her career, she recognized that a legal education offered more than a pathway to practicing law.

The skills gained through legal training— critical thinking, problem solving, and effective communication—opened doors to a wide range of opportunities and ultimately shaped a diverse and rewarding career.

One of the defining lessons she has learned along the way is that careers rarely follow a straight path.

“Your career can take unexpected turns and encounter delays,” Villaseñor explains. “But every stage is an opportunity to learn, build relationships, and gain experiences that will serve you in the future.”

Among her many accomplishments, Villaseñor counts her service as a Refugee Officer with the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program among her proudest achievements. In that role, she represented the United States overseas while helping refugees facing persecution seek safety and a new beginning.

Today, she is bringing that same commitment to service closer to home.

The decision to open her own firm came at a time when immigration law continues to evolve rapidly, creating a growing need for trusted legal guidance.
