As we welcome a new year, January is a time of fresh beginnings, renewed energy, and reflection on what makes La Quinta such a special place to live, work, and do business. The start of the year brings a noticeable sense of momentum throughout our city. Mini Pizzas, Big Smiles: Culinary Kids Cook Up Fun at La Quinta Library Story by: Sherry Barkas/City of La Quinta “Who likes pizza?” “Me! Me,” the six girls, ages 5 to 7, in black aprons shouted back as they shot their hands into the air. Then they chatted and giggled with each other as they created mini-pizzas during the Culinary Kids program at the La Quinta Library with step-by-step help from Sarah Lawson, library associate, who leads the program. “It’s super fun,” said Lawson, a mother of two daughters ages 10 and 11 years old, who enjoys her job and the kids that attend the programs. In the December 1 class, the students made mini-pizzas using English muffins for the crust, spooning on sauce and sprinkling with cheese then choosing toppings they like including pepperoni, a variety of bell peppers, sliced olives and pineapple. “My favorite thing is them getting messy with it,” Lawson said. 8
The Culinary Kids classes for 8- to 12-year-olds often include different recipes or they may create the same thing but with some changes. For example, rather than use English muffins, the older students made pizza dough.
“We teach them about working as a team in the kitchen and having fun with it. If they spill something or make a mess, it’s like don’t worry about it, don’t rush to clean it up but enjoy your cooking time and we’ll clean it up later,” she said.
“With the 8- to 12-year-olds we try to keep it the same topic. Last month we did a pastry for both of them but the one we did for the (younger) kids was like an instant pudding mix and they made their own mini-banana cream pies,” Lawson said.
She also teaches kitchen safety.
“That took only 20 minutes and I knew the older kids would want something more advanced, so we ended up doing colored Rice Krispies treats and they got to do all the marshmallow melting themselves and the whole thing,” she said. Some recipes are a team effort. “With the banana cream pie, one packet (of pudding) makes so many servings so we had them pick who pours the milk and who does the powder – we try to split it up so everyone has something to do,” Lawson said.
Usually at the end of the class, kids will pitch in and help wipe things down, she said. “My first and foremost (message) is cooking should be fun,” Lawson said. Bringing Kids Together Students can eat their creations in the class or take them home for later, she said. When it came to the pizzas, they couldn’t wait to eat what they made. Five-year-old Paige Siani enjoys cooking with her mother, Heather Siani of Indio, and loves pizza. So, it was a great morning when she and her good friend, Kenzley With, attended their first Culinary Kids
A Side Lesson with Avocados Culinary Kids was started about two years ago, when parents who are homeschooling their children asked the library staff about creating some youth programs during the school day rather than after-school or on weekends. The homeschool parents were looking for something they could include in the kids’ curriculums, said Sara DeLaCruz, library branch manager. cooking class and made pizzas. The girls know each other from church and hugged when they saw each other. “We cook at home together all the time,” Janelle With said of daughter Kenzley, 5. Heather Siani learned of the program through a homeschoolers group and shared the information with Janelle With. Seated around a table creating their pizzas, the six girls chatted and giggled as if they’d all known each other for years. Each class is up to an hour long and usually has a 50-50 mix of girls and boys though on December 1 the students were all girls. Bianca Delgado brought daughters, Mia, 6, and Jimena, 5, to their second Culinary Kids class. The first time, they made small pies. “They loved it and were asking, ‘When’s the next class,’” Delgado said, adding they like to help her at home in making sourdough breads and cakes. They live in Thermal and visit the La Quinta Library often and Delgado said she learned of the program when she saw it on the calendar of events.
“It’s been a popular program,” she said. Culinary Kids crosses into other programs as well through the use of produce grown using the library’s hydroponic Flex Farm and sustainability through the library’s vermicomposting of organic waste. Vermicomposting uses red wiggler worms to turn food scraps and organic waste into compost that is used in the library’s garden. While the pizzas were cooking, Lawson taught the students about avocados – how to tell if they are ripe, the proper way to cut them using a butter knife and how to easily remove the pit by pressing the back of the avocado their thumbs. Students had a great time with the avocados, digging them out of the skins with their hands. Culinary Kids classes currently offered are for homeschooled kids but the library is planning to do a monthly class on Saturdays that will be open to ages 5 to 12. That is tentatively scheduled to start at the end of February – check the Library’s Facebook page or events calendar for dates.
“I did have a lot of kids at an outreach at Truman Elementary who mentioned they really wanted to learn cooking,” Lawson said. Program Registration Culinary Kids is one of dozens of programs offered by the library for free, including book clubs, monthly birthday parties, a Chess Club for all levels, a writing club, and more. There are programs for all age groups and skill levels with new ones routinely being added. The library offers two Culinary Kids programs, one for ages 5 to 7 years and another for ages 8 to 12, on alternating Mondays at 11 a.m. Each Culinary Kids class can hold up to 12 students. One thing I would like to encourage our residents to do this year is get involved with Neighborhood Watch, if you aren’t already. While the City’s crime rates remain among the lowest in the Coachella Valley, falling year-over-year the last three years, our public safety teams say that efforts to keep our community safe are boosted when residents and business owners report unusual activity in their neighborhoods. “La Quinta continues to be recognized as one of the safest cities in the Coachella Valley, with overall crime rates steadily declining over the past three years. This ongoing success is the result of strong partnerships between our deputies, city leadership, and most importantly our residents,” Riverside County Sherff’s Lt. Nicolas Lingle said. A key factor in this progress is the active involvement of the community through programs such as Neighborhood Watch, Lingle said. “When neighbors look out for one another, stay informed, and report suspicious activity, it creates a powerful layer of prevention that no agency can provide alone,” he said. “Neighborhood Watch groups serve as extra eyes and CITY UPDATES
“We thank the residents of La Quinta for their vigilance and commitment to keeping our community safe. Together, we will continue to reduce crime and maintain the high quality of life that makes La Quinta one of the Coachella Valley’s most secure and welcoming cities,” Lingle added. Upcoming Meetings The next Neighborhood Watch meeting is Thursday, January 22, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the Study Session room at City Hall. For most meetings, the topic is chosen based on trends the City’s public safety team is seeing in the area. For example, if police notice an increase in scam calls or emails, they will focus on how residents can best protect themselves. January’s meeting will be a Code Compliance meet-and-greet, offering residents an opportunity to ask questions related to code issues. Neighborhood Watch was formed in 1972 with residents in communities across the country working together with law enforcement agencies, private organizations, and individual citizens uniting to prevent crime and improve their local communities. It encourages neighbors to get to know and look out for each other by being observant, reporting suspicious activity The project will include improvements to existing park and pool facilities.
Fritz Burns Improvements Construction on the multiphase Fritz Burns Park Improvement Project is underway with most of the work continuing through February. 14
Improvements in the pool area will continue through May. The pickleball and tennis courts will remain open throughout construction.

Meetings are held the fourth Thursdays most months, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. There are no meetings during the summer, June through August. Following is the schedule through May 2026: • January 22 • February – no meeting due to the La Quinta Art Celebration • March 26 • April – no meeting due to the music festivals • May 28 Residents are encouraged to attend and bring questions and suggest ideas for different meeting topics. The American Express Returns: A Bigger Spotlight on La Quinta, the Gem of the Desert Story by: GCVCC Staff As the winter sun spills over the Santa Rosa Mountains and greens up the desert landscape, La Quinta once again prepares for one of its most celebrated traditions: The American Express® PGA TOUR tournament. But this year feels different—because in many ways, it is. With the PGA TOUR schedule seeing a rare shake-up early in the season, the Coachella Valley is stepping into an even brighter national spotlight. The Sentry in Kapalua, normally a marquee opening event, was canceled in response to the drought conditions Maui has experienced. As a result, The American Express now becomes the second event of the 2026 PGA TOUR season—and the first played in the continental United States. Story by: Sherry Barkas/City of La Quinta If you’ve taken a stroll through the Civic Center Campus lately, you probably noticed something new: banners with names and photos of La Quinta veterans displayed throughout the park. Seeing the banner with her dad Donald L. Denney’s photo flying “makes me so proud,” said Sandra Denney Martin of La Quinta. “Family from all over have come and taken pictures of themselves and the flag.” Petty Officer Third Class Donald Denney served in the United States Navy from 1951 to 1955. He was one of 20 La Quinta residents honored during the Veterans Recognition Ceremony on November 11 and whose names were added to the Veterans Acknowledgement Monuments for 2025. The banners in the park are for those 20 and will remain up through Memorial Day. “They’re nice because they put a face to the name” on the monument, said Dave Denney, one of Donald Denney’s five children and a veteran as well who served 24 years in the U.S. Army. Dave Denney’s son has 26
also served in the Army. Donald Denney, a resident of La Quinta since 2009, was excited to receive the recognition on Veterans Day but died just three days before the ceremony. Dave Denney accepted the letter from the City on behalf of his Dad and family. He was looking forward to the recognition so much that just five days before the ceremony he was getting his hair cut and picking up new prescription glasses, Dave Denney said. During the Korean War, Donald Denney served aboard the aircraft carrier the USS Boxer. The ship made multiple runs back-and-forth between the U.S. and Korea transporting equipment, ammunition and aircraft. There were times when the ship was in imminent danger and had to be moved away from areas getting hit by the war efforts and the crew was on lockdown at their stations. For Donald Denney that meant being locked down in the lower belly of the carrier where they couldn’t get out. The fear of dying inside a metal box sinking if the ship was torpedoed or hit by fire was real for his dad, Dave Denney said.
“After that (Korea), his next station was at Kodiak, Alaska, where he married my mom,” Dave Denney said. The two had been pen pals, introduced by each other’s sisters. Donald and Colleen Denney had five children together and celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary on June 5, 2025. Dave Denney, who lives in Washington, said the City’s monuments are intimate memorials that people can visit and see the names of friends or neighbors they didn’t know had served in the military. For families, they are an everlasting reminder and thank-you for their loved one’s service.
