Chairman’s Message

We have a well-honed passion; we experience food, we don’t just eat it. This ardent or even refined interest in the culinary arts has become an integral part of our culture. The talent of preparing and serving delicate and visually appetizing food has catapulted numerous up-and-coming chefs into the limelight and has resulted in the success of countless trendy new dining concepts right here in our own backyard.

We now crave the finest presentation of the freshest ingredients, even from the most modest of venues. This is apparent in the rising number of Gastro-Pubs, Pop-Up restaurants, and even high-end food trucks - all of which are now becoming mainstream artistic food trends here in the Coachella Valley.

These new epicurian styles and gastronomic fads continue to shape the ever-evolving role that food has in our culture.

Cuisine has also had a profound influence on travel. In fact, culinary tourism – both locally and internationally – is on the rise. People now plan vacations around particular cultural regions like Italy or France, and day trip itineraries include the sampling of libations from nearby wineries or craft brew pubs. This idolization of fare has had a significant impact on social media as well.

It has become common

practice to take photos of the foods and beverages we consume, which are satisfying to the eye, to share with friends and family online.

Our beautiful City of La Quinta offers many incredible venues to explore these new and exciting trends in food.

Why not try a sweet scientific treat like nitrogen-chilled ice cream or a wonderful Farm-to-Table Sunday Brunch? Mélange offers guests delightful fine dining, and is open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Surround yourself with majestic mountain views as you dine lakeside at the indoor/outdoor restaurant showcasing California farm-sourced ingredients and offering a menu of classic and contemporary dishes.

During the renovation, an all-new bar and lounge were designed to allow guests and diners to relax and socialize with a glass of champagne, wine or a handcrafted cocktail. Take your drinks outside to enjoy the warmth of one of the fire pits while the sun sets and creates a magical sky and reflection on the lake. The Chateau also welcomes le chien – or man’s best friend – to join you during your stay and during your dining experience. They can even chow down with a special pet menu created by the executive chef, Jeremy Saccardi.

Jeremy’s inspired culinary creations offer the ideal complement to the idyllic surroundings of Mélange, for both people and canines. Jeremy apprenticed under several celebrity chefs, including Charlie Palmer, Kerry Simon, Jean Joho, Jan Birnbaum, and Cat Cora. His exposure to their different perspectives on elevated modern and classic cuisine allowed him to develop his own style. The flavors he presents reflect his focus on quality ingredients, which he pairs in unique yet comforting ways. Jeremy uses locally and seasonally available foods, and says “This approach has allowed me to create harmony in my food with texture, flavor, and color,” adding that The Chateau’s beautiful natural ambience fires his imagination to create cuisine that is equally enticing.

“Although our food is very approachable, we pride ourselves on serving a level of cuisine that is more comparable to what you would find in larger cities and food-centric communities. We utilize products that you don’t see very often in the area and provide flavor combinations that evoke both comfort and excitement to the palate” says Jeremy about their menu. “Each dish is designed to be a harmony unto itself, utilizing the techniques and creativity of the chef along with high-quality fresh ingredients.” The Chef recommends trying the Mediterranean Sea Bass with heirloom cauliflowers and sea urchin.

Reservations may be made in advance through OpenTable or by calling 760-564-7332. Breakfast is served from 7 am to 10:30 am, lunch is served from 11 am to 3 pm, and dinner from 5 to 9 pm. Sunday Brunch is served every Sunday from 10 am to 2 pm and happy hour is available from 3 to 6 pm daily.

Teeing Up For Another Fun, Fabulous La Quinta Arts Festival Submitted by: LQAF Staff

Grab your family and friends and head over to the 37th La Quinta Arts Festival which promises to be the best ever!

Set for Thursday through Sunday, March 7-10, 2019 at the beautiful La Quinta Civic Center Campus, 10am to 5pm daily, 220 friendly artists and a legion of cheerful volunteers are ready to welcome you to the show Ranked # 1 in the Nation!

Presenting original works in diverse mediums, styles and price points, artists are arriving from 36 US States, Argentina, Canada, Italy and Nicaragua, to connect with you and share their creative viewpoints. Ever evolving, this year LQAF welcomed the digital art exhibition category which incorporates computer graphics, computer animation, virtual and interactive art, 3d printing, and more in the realm of New Media Art.

Tennessee artist Daryl Thetford. Thetford was commissioned by the City of La Quinta to create a recognizable La Quinta cityscape, on display at La Quinta Library’s Makerspace. You will find prints of ‘La Quinta Day’ and ‘La Quinta Night’ for sale at the Festival Shop.

Speaking of interactive art, on Saturday creativity is at your fingertips! Festivalgoers are invited to join the fun to finger paint a 10ft. x17ft. mural designed and orchestrated by acclaimed artist Peter Tigler. The mural theme celebrates our Coachella Valley lifestyle and is made possible by the California Desert Arts Council.

Between mingling with the artists and making your mark on the mural, enjoy some delicious food and drink from Fisherman’s Market & Grill, Bristol Farms Café, Aspen Mills Café and Bakery, Brandini Toffee, and E & E Pels. A Fun Food Lifestyle in La Quinta Submitted by: GCVCC Staff

La Quinta is full of great activities and things to-do; from hiking and biking to shopping and dining – but dining doesn’t have to be exclusive to the restaurants around the city. There are events and programs year-round in La Quinta offering residents and visitors the chance to eat while enjoying our beautiful surroundings.

On February 8, those 21 and over enjoyed Toast to LQ at La Quinta Museum. Toast to LQ provided a fun atmosphere, fine wines, hors d’oeuvres and a live jazz band that entertained all night long. Admission ranged from $20 to $30, which included all wine tastings and hors d’oeuvres. All proceeds benefited La Quinta Historical Society. While this event has already happened, keep an eye out for similar benefit events at La Quinta Museum.

First Thursdays in Old Town La Quinta offers family fun, food, drinks, and live music on Main Street the first Thursday of every month from November through April.

All happy hour menus and drink prices are extended to 8:00 pm in addition to regular dinner menus at Solano’s, The Grill on Main, Old Town Tavern-Barbeque, and Stuft Pizza. Dine al fresco, listen to live music, and explore the shops.

Sunday Certified Farmers’ Market is open every Sunday from 8:00 am to 12:30 pm October to April in Old Town La Quinta. You’ll

find fresh produce, herbs, honey, nuts, cheese, fresh-cut flowers, organic meat, fresh-baked breads, olive oils, live music and so much more. La Quinta Cliffhouse is a local hidden gem nestled cliffside on Highway 111 offering guests a unique dining experience near world-class resorts and shopping. I hope all of you have a chance to enjoy some art this month, spend some time in our parks and trails, and take in the beautiful wildflowers that are in bloom. Make sure to stop by the La Quinta Arts Festival happening in our very own Civic Center Park beginning on the 7th and running through the 10th. For our youth community, Desert Youth Olympics will take place at La Quinta High School on March 9th and launch a rocket at Mission LQ happening at Monticello Park on the 23rd. March is a special time to enjoy La Quinta!

Hello, La Quinta residents. As we say hello to March, we look back on a very wet February. With some of the cleanup being undertaken around the valley, I am pleased to report our roadways and infrastructure held up quite well. Thank you to all the drivers and pedestrians who showed patience and caution during the heavy rains, helping to keep our city safe for everyone.

The La Quinta Village Complete Streets Project is set to start in June of 2019 with phase 1 going along Calle Tampico. The project is focused on making roadways safer and more accessible to pedestrians and bicycles in the La Quinta Village. This project received $7.3 million in funding for construction through a grant called the “Active Transportation Program”. The project will add five roundabouts in the Village area.

Other projects in the works include the Dune Palm Road Widening Project that will widen Dune Palms Road from Blackhawk Way to the northern approach of the future Dune Palms bridge, taking it from two to four lanes. Construction on this project is anticipated to begin June of 2019. The Eisenhower Retention Basin Project is anticipated to begin construction in May of 2019. The drainage improvements will provide flood protection for up to a 150-year storm event. The basin is designed to collect runoff from multiple intersections and accept overflow from the Legacy Villas development.

The planned XPark continues to progress, with great feedback being provided at the recent Riders Workshop held on February 11th. The feedback from that event will allow both City staff and the developers from Spohn Ranch to present the final concept to City Council this month. The XPark has an estimated completion date of December 2019.

After the January 15, 2019 Study Session, City Council gave direction to City Staff to move forward with a Public Safety Camera System pilot project, with cameras installed at Washington Street and Eisenhower Drive, Washington Street and Ave. 52, and Jefferson Street and Ave. 49, at no cost to the city for ninety days from March through May. This is designed to create efficiencies in the delivery of public safety services and contain ever-increasing costs of police services. City Hall will have a live viewing room starting in March where the public is welcomed to view the system and see its capabilities during

2019 La Quinta Annual Residents Golf Tournament The La Quinta Annual Residents Golf Tournament will be played on the Arnold Palmer Classic Course at SilverRock Resort on Sunday, April 21st. Sign-ups are at the SilverRock Golf Shop; deadline is April 17, 2019. The cost of the event is $80 per person which includes golf, BBQ lunch, gift bag and other prizes to be awarded. The event will be a best-ball two-person team event. There will be a Men’s, Ladies, and a Mixed (1 Man & 1 Lady) Division. Walk the Rock SilverRock continues the popular 9-hole “Walk the Rock” program this month. savings component added to an insurance component to arrive at a death benefit.

The rate-per-dollar of the insurance component increased as you aged, but the savings component was supposed to grow over time, which would reduce the size of the insurance component. At sale time, policies projected to pay for themselves as long as the return assumptions came true often didn’t. Over the last 30 years, interest rates were lower than expected.

DSUSD Students Excel in Spelling and Science Submitted by: Mary E. B. Perry The first National Spelling Bee took place in 1925.

Some believe that the purpose of holding spelling bees was to assist in the standardization of the American language. Their popularity spawned an award winning Broadway play The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, first performed in New York City in 2004.

It was the winner of the coveted Tony Award in 2005.

The Desert Sands Unified School District spelling bee, held on January 9, went a marathon three hours. Beginning with 21 winners of individual school competitions, after 17 rounds it was down to two competitors. Saige Yang from Ronald Reagan Elementary School and Dylan Duy Le from George Washington Charter Elementary School continued until, at the 58th round, fifth grader Saige reached her last word: efficacy, and fourth grader Dylan had his final word of the 259-word competition.

With steady concentration, Dylan spelled “symbiosis� correctly, earning his title of 2019 DSUSD Spelling Bee Champion. Dylan will represent DSUSD at the Riverside County Spelling Bee Competition with Saige as alternate. The winner will go on to the 2019 Scripps

National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. Science fairs first became popular in the early 1950s as interest in science was high after the use of atomic weapons and the dawn of television. As the decade progressed, science stories in the news brought science fiction to reality, attracting increasing numbers of students to fairs. Contestants present their project results in the form of a report, display board, and models that they have created. The DSUSD Science Fair allows students in grades K through 12 to compete in science and/or technology activities exploring areas of the science standards, test a hypothesis, and reach a conclusion based on data. DSUSD winners competed on January 23 at the district-wide competition.

Topics ranged from bacteria to slime, water, energy, and everything in between. Close to 200 students participated and 39 were selected to proceed to the RIMS Inland Science and Engineering Fair on April 2 & 3.

Students of all grade levels compete in other events such as the Skills USA competition, the Charles & Priscilla Porter Academic World Quest Competition, Riverside County Office of Education Mock Trials, the Riverside County Academic Decathlon, and more.
