Greater Coachella Valley

What a year! It has been a privilege to lead the Greater Coachella Valley Chamber of Commerce (GCVCC) through its second year of combined service. As we look back on what has been a series of great successes, I thought I would take a moment to share some of our accomplishments over the last twelve months.

The Chamber hosted our first-ever California Gubernatorial Candidate Series at the Fantasy Springs Resort Casino Special Event Center. Three of the four major candidates for office came to the Coachella Valley to address our membership: Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa (D), State Treasurer John Chiang (D), and one of the eventual nominees, John Cox (R). This venture was a true testament to how far our valley, and our chamber, has come as a regional force and major contributor to our state economy. Sacramento clearly has our valley and its residents on their radar.

Our strong event slate continued in 2017-18 with a host of business, community, and city-partnered events.

The final GCVCC event count for the year? A staggering 235 events, averaging almost one event per day during normal business operations. Among the many success stories were three sold-out State of the City addresses, along with a very successful Second Annual All Valley Mayors & Tribal Chairmen Luncheon.

The Southwest Arts Festival Indio continues to be a major contributor to the GCVCC success story, generating more than one million dollars in overall revenue for the second year in a row. We also established some new business ventures, partnering with the Desert Sun and the City of Indio for the first time to host Tachevah, an Indio Block Party. Our entire community event slate remains strong, with successful events like the Tacos, Tequila and Chavelas Festival in Coachella, the La Quinta Car Show, and the Orion Awards in Cathedral City. The GCVCC has

truly stayed connected with our communities.

Most importantly, the GCVCC continues to advocate and promote small businesses in the Coachella Valley.

The GCVCC was recognized as a “2017 Neighborhood Champion” for its work on the Small Business Week Expo, which drew more than one hundred local business exhibitors. We also received the President’s Circle Award from CalChamber for our advocacy work on behalf of Small Businesses. The Chamber initiated many regional marketing campaigns and initiatives throughout the year to support our local economy, including Fly PSP First, Shop Small Coachella Valley, and the FirstNet Deployment Summit, while building on already successful efforts like our monthly publication The Gem. The GCVCC and its more than 1,400 members have established themselves as a driving force advocating for jobs and a strong business community in our region.

We thank you, our members and partners, for all the support you have given us this business year. As I hand the Chairmanship off to my friend Ernesto Rosales for the 2018-19 year, I know The Chamber is in great hands.

Indio Chamber Welcome A warm welcome from the City of Festivals! The Indio Chamber of Commerce has proudly served our local business community since 1947. Indio has one of the original business communities in our valley, born from the arrival of the railroads in the 1870’s. Today we are the largest city in the Coachella Valley, a thriving urban community that is one of the fastest growing cities in the State. Ranked as one of the Top 20 Best Cities for Young Families in California by Nerdwallet.com, almost 90,000 people call Indio home, and we expect to reach 100,000 in population by 2020.

Our business community is a diverse tapestry of tourism, agriculture, health care, and of course small business.

Indio was ranked as the #1 city in California to start a business by HowToStartAnLLC. org in 2017. Just this year we welcomed Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital to our downtown area, which will serve more than 135,000 children in the region. Our infrastructure is also keeping pace: A beautiful new interchange can be found

at I-10 and Jefferson Street, and Highway 111 is currently undergoing a widening and beautification project to give our residents and visitors easier and safer access to our city.

THE COACHELLA VALLEY HAS ITS NEXT GENERATION OF BUSINESS LEADERS, AND THE FUTURE LOOKS BRIGHT. The Coachella Valley is seeing a rising tide of young leaders emerge in our valley. Their backgrounds are diverse, as are the fields in which they work. But one common theme ties them all together: they are smart, capable, and ready to leave their mark on the valley. We sat down with a group of them recently to discuss a wide-range of topics related to their personal journey, our local economy, and the road ahead for our valley. Here are their thoughts, in their own words.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THE COACHELLA VALLEY AS YOUR PLACE TO LIVE AND DO BUSINESS?

“My parents moved to the valley when I was three years old.

They were attracted to the valley because we had family here and there was plenty of work in agriculture. My mom later went on to get a Master’s in psychology from Chapman University in Palm Desert and eventually opened her own insurance business. As she grew her business, I learned that this valley provides great business opportunities for anyone who is willing to work hard. Opportunities are endless, and I feel fortunate to be able to call this valley my home.”

And people here in the valley do take pride in working with other local businesses.
