CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE By: Douglas Motz GCV La Quinta Chamber Chairman Even though it’s still officially winter, it sure has felt like spring! I hope you have taken advantage of all the outdoor events we had in February while enjoying this beautiful weather.

One of the biggest events in February was our 12th Annual La Quinta Hot Rod and Custom Car Show held on February 3rd. This year’s show celebrated the 65th anniversary of the Corvette and our Mayor’s Choice was the 1957 Chevy Corvette! I want to take this time to thank Chairperson Randy Foulds as well as the chamber staff and volunteers for making this such a fantastic event.

Save the Date for the next big event, the 36th Annual La Quinta Arts Festival from March 1-4, 2018, hosted by the La Quinta Arts Foundation.

MESSAGE FROM HERITAGE FESTIVAL: Live Music, Vintage Games, Family Fun & More! ~ FREE ENTRANCE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC Take a step back in time! Come and experience the Heritage Festival, Saturday March 17 on the grounds of the Coachella Valley History Museum in Old Town Indio. The Festival provides a unique opportunity to learn about the significant cultures that led to the settlement of the entire Coachella Valley, all in one place. The Festival showcases the personal histories of Cahuilla, Mexican, Anglo, Black, Japanese and Armenian families by means of entertainment and exhibits.

There will be plenty to enjoy. Foods representing these cultures will be featured throughout the day. Folkloric Dancers, Second Baptist Mass Gospel Choir, Sandblasters Barbershop Singers, Fiddlers and Japanese Koshin Taiko drummers will all highlight the event for 2018. Early American craft demonstrators will be on hand to share with all who attend! Enjoy watching a blacksmith, weavers and spinners, wood carvers, potters, paper crafters, leather working, vintage tractors, ancestry boards that detail these culture’s timelines and presence in the Valley and much, much more.

Visitors can also take a jeep tour of the murals in old downtown Indio. Jr. Historian actors are placed around the campus portraying our valley’s trailblazers. Children can participate in old fashioned games and activities such as sack and egg races, jump rope, clothespin doll making, origami folding, Cahuilla Crafts, Dress-a-dolly, and Aunt Polly’s wash room.

The grounds of the Museum boasts many vintage exhibits and buildings.

The center of the grounds hosts the 1927 Dr. Smiley-Tyler adobe home, surrounded by a complete blacksmith shop, farm equipment, the 1909 one-room Indio Public Schoolhouse and the Date Museum. Wilkin has a personal connection to Caleo Bay, as her mother Marilyn suffers from Alzheimer’s and receives care there. Following seven months of challenges at another community, Marilyn was relocated to Caleo Bay in May 2017. Caleo Bay’s Meaningful Moments dementia training coupled with 24/7 nursing staff finally allowed her family to sleep better at night. After spending six months as a grateful daughter, when the opportunity arose to be the new administrator, Wilkin accepted.

Family members caring for dementia patients have unique challenges, especially when your loved one is resistant. Understanding some of the reasons why this may happen can provide some insight into how to strategize a successful care plan.

Put yourself in the place of the patient. For years, they have been taking care of their own personal needs, but now all of a sudden they cannot. How they perceive things is changing, too. Finding the right words to describe how they are feeling may be difficult as well, adding to their frustration.

If your nonprofit is targeted by a lawsuit and it doesn’t have adequate funds to pay for its defense, judgments, or settlements, your directors and officers will be paying the costs. Special events and fundraisers play a significant role in a nonprofit organization’s annual fundraising goals, but they come with great liabilities.

4) Try calming music and a quiet environment so there is less chance of stimulation.

5) Try to keep your emotions in check. Even body language can be picked up by a patient.

If caregiving becomes a burden, understand that you may not be able to be the sole caregiver for your loved one. There are options and you shouldn’t feel guilty using them. Organizations like Alzheimer’s Coachella Valley can offer support groups and helpful programs, and in-home care agencies can help you get the rest you need.

ARTS EDUCATION AND THE LA QUINTA ART ASSOCIATION As a child, Arts and Crafts time always seemed to trigger an intense state of attention and wonder. When I joined the La Quinta Art’s Association, I advocated that providing assistance for the delivery of Art education in our local classrooms would encourage our youth to pursue creative endeavors.

This outreach led me to discover that the need surpassed “encouragement”, and the extent of its worth continues to reveal itself.

Children face challenges like the rest of us need productive ways to express themselves. Art maintains a therapeutic potency and the potential to provide an outlet for healing. Facilitating discussions about art, and potentially providing an array of materials for the discovery of creative skills, will further the ability of the children to partake in their imaginative intelligences.

Creative processes evoke resourcefulness from an early age. The need to manipulate mediums, and employ different techniques, illuminate art’s tendency to summon and build problem-solving abilities and confidence.The use of paintbrushes, crayons, and pencils not only activate and develop small muscles, but also enhance hand-eye coordination.

Art is a means by which we connect to each other humans and to our history.

As a visual, instinctive language, continuing to cross communicative barriers, it is displayed in nearly every aspect of our working lives. The displacement of Fine and Performing Arts budgets is bound to have a long-term psychological impact on our children. The aim of limiting the negative effects is a noble one.

THE RIGHT EDGE While you may have personal preferences, the functionality of a serrated blade versus a straight-edged blade really depends on what you’re using it for.

The best analogy would be having the right tool for the right job. So here are some tips for choosing the right knife for the job.

Straight-Edge A straight-edged blade looks exactly how it sounds: straight. The great thing about straight-edged blades is that it is typically extremely keen and pointed.

This sharpness allows for better precision and control over the knife. It’s also ideal for anything that requires chopping.

Serrated Edge Edges with fine-protruding teeth are serrated. Unlike the straight-edged blade, serrated blades are less precise and tend to rip and tear your food. They are fantastic for slice cuts, which require you to drag the edge of the the blade back and forth over the object to cut it. For example, items like bread and tomatoes are best cut with a serrated knife. A disadvantage, however, is that serrated edges cannot be sharpened.

Double-D (double durable) Edge The Double-D edge has three distinct cutting edges that cut food, whether you are moving forward, backward, or straight down. Of course, we’d all prefer our skin be a smooth, unblemished surface, but unfortunately aberrations do occur. Two of the more common skin conditions that crop up are seborrheic keratosis and skin tags. Here’s a guide to help you recognize these benign skin growths.

Sign of the times As you move through your middle age years and beyond, chances are you’ll develop a seborrheic keratoses or two. Some look like a wart, others resemble dabs of brown candle wax..

Seborrheic keratoses can pop up anywhere on your skin, but most often, you’ll see them on the chest, back, head, or neck. Although it’s possible to develop just one, frequently they appear in clusters. If you’re troubled by their appearance, there are a number of treatments available.

Unwelcome tagalong There’s a good chance you have or have had a skin tag – egg-shaped growths attached to a fleshy stalk. It’s estimated that almost half of adults have at least one of these harmless growths. They tend to appear in the body’s creases and folds, such as the neck, armpits, groin and eyelids. Usually small in size, skin tags aren’t painful, but they can be annoying.

Removal can be accomplished by freezing them off using liquid nitrogen, through electrodessication, which employs an electrical current., or having them neatly excised.

Remember, unusual skin growths do warrant examination. However, there is no real cause for alarm should either of the above conditions arise.

Deep Cleaning: Consider hiring professionals to do a thorough cleaning of your vacation rental. Add mattress protectors to all your beds, and consider adding pillow tops.

Touch-ups: You might not need to paint the entire house, just the most used and/or visible areas (living room, entryway, and kitchen).

Add Visual Interest: An inexpensive option is to frame some scenic photographs of our beautiful desert or iconic local locations.

Upgrade Linens. Vacationers love large, soft towels and comfy linens.

Sheets that are 400 thread count or higher are softer and tend to last longer.

10. No Bar Soap. Instead, opt for some refillable pumps. They’re not as messy, and you won’t have to constantly replace partially used bars.
