By Jessica Coley, Regional Director of Communications, American Red Cross Mission: The American Red Cross prevents and alleviates human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors.

It’s the middle of the night and your family is sound asleep when the blaring sound of the smoke alarm jolts you awake. The room is dark and filled with smoke. You frantically grab what you can and race outside before watching your home consumed by the flames. You inventory what you were able to grab and it’s not much. You’re on the street with just the clothes on your back, and have nowhere to go.

That’s when some strangers in red vests show up. They’re wearing a familiar symbol: the Red Cross.

Every day in our community, volunteers from the American Red Cross are responding to scenarios just like this one. They provide financial assistance for lodging, food, and new clothes. They give referrals to additional agencies that can help, and offer advice for families as they look toward the daunting task of recovery.

Red Cross nurses replace vital medications and prescriptions, and crisis counselors offer spiritual care or emotional support.

But above all, Red Cross disaster volunteers provide relief and hope that everything will be ok. These incredible acts of compassion and humanity were on national display just last year, as the country was hit with back-to-back historic disasters. The destruction caused by hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria were unprecedented, but the Red Cross rose to the challenge, providing millions of meals and snacks along with shelter for tens of thousands of people forced from their homes. a seven week period in September and October, the Red Cross, along with community partners, provided more overnight shelter stays than in the past five years combined.

Just when the storms had passed and recovery services were underway for hurricane victims, unprecedented wildfires ripped through Northern California, killing dozens and destroying thousands of homes within mere hours. The images were heartbreaking, and the work seemed daunting. But again, Red Cross volunteers rallied after months of responding to national disasters in order to provide shelter, meals, health services, and more to California families affected by the fires.

A Volunteer Workforce It takes a special level of compassion and dedication to do this work, and Red Cross volunteers are among the best. In an organization that’s more than 90% led by unpaid workers, these volunteers are the backbone of the Red Cross. These volunteers are ready to respond to home fires 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and deploy at a moment’s notice to help others in need. Often times these deployments to help those in need, can take volunteers across country, away from their own families and jobs, for two weeks or more at a time.

Last year the Red Cross of Ventura County had nearly 600 local volunteers answer the call to serve the community. These dedicated volunteers gave relief and comfort to over 130 local families that lost everything due to disasters like fires and flooding. They installed hundreds of free smoke alarms for Ventura County families, and supported local military families in times of emergency through the Service to the Armed Forces program. They made Ventura County a stronger, more resilient community to live in through countless lifesaving blood drives and CPR/First Aid courses.

A Tradition of Service The Red Cross has been serving in Ventura County for more than 100 years, recently celebrating its centennial anniversary in 2017.

Currently the work being done by the Red Cross is part of a long history and tradition of serving the local community.

Today, in addition to responding to countless disasters, the Red Cross has launched the Sound the Alarm.

Save a Life initiative to prevent home fires before they even start, and to help save lives when they do. Locally, Red Cross and community volunteers have installed thousands of free smoke alarms for Ventura County families through the program, while educating them on the importance of home fire safety.

An average of 91 cents of every dollar the Red Cross spends is invested in humanitarian services and programs.

Chris Shaver Vice President, Shaver Automotive Group Board Chair, Greater Conejo Valley Chamber of Commerce

ConejoView: Please tell us about Shaver Automotive.

Chris Shaver: My brothers and I are part of a fourth generation new car automotive family.

Our dad relocated to the Thousand Oaks area in the early 80’s when he founded Shaver Pontiac. We all spent time in our youth working at the dealership. During the summer breaks when I visited my Dad, I was a porter at the dealership and then started selling cars at 17.

I started full time at the dealership when I got out of college at age 22.

Today, Shaver Automotive sells and services new cars and trucks from Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, Ram, Fiat and Volvo. We also sell all makes and models in our Pre-Owned department. In addition to vehicles, Shaver sell parts, body sheet metal, and accessories both to retail customers and local wholesale accounts.

CV: What are some of the unique challenges in working in a family-run business?

CS: There certainly can be challenges maintaining a boundary between family and business issues. We are constantly thinking about and discussing both long term and short term concerns regarding business operations, and we have to be aware to not bring these issues into the family environment. I am fortunate that my brother Andy Shaver, the president of the company, and I are not only brothers, but best friends as well. There is a level of trust and understanding between us that allows us to avoid the pitfalls that can sometimes be found in family businesses.

CV: What is the toughest challenge you’ve faced in your career? How did you handle it?

CS: The economic downturn in 2008 and 2009 that hit all types of industry, including the automotive sector very hard. My brother and I came up with our plan, “Project Chainsaw,” and had to make some very difficult decisions. One of us was at the dealership every day (we are open 7 days a week) and we ended up being profitable in the two hardest years in the car business of my life. It was a good lesson of the adage “Good habits are developed in bad times; and bad habits are developed in good times” and we try to remember that now, as we are currently in one of the strongest cycles of the automotive industry.

CV: What are you most proud of in your career?

CS: The ability to work with some truly amazing individuals/employees who have then gone on to have much success in the car business, as well as other fields. My brother and I encourage people to pursue their goals and career aspirations, even if it means the company may lose talented people.

CV: How has the automotive business changed in recent years?

CS: Technology and the Internet have changed a lot of traditional retailer’s business models, and the automobile business is certainly no different. The Internet has dramatically improved the buying experience for both the consumer and the dealership as it helps speed up the process by helping customers compare several different options online as opposed to visiting multiple dealerships in person and allows for transparent pricing.

CV: If the Chamber was a car, what kind of car would it be?

CS: I would say it would be a Jeep Wrangler; it can go anywhere and do anything, no matter how big the hill is to climb or how rugged the terrain.

California State University Channel Islands: Set to Launch a New Mechatronics Engineering Program in the Fall

By Kim Lamb Gregory In the fall 2018, California State University Channel Islands (CSUCI) will welcome its first group of freshmen to the brand new Mechatronics Engineering program. The program will accept 24 freshmen for the program launch with plans to increase that number by 24 each year until the total number of Mechatronics majors is just under 100. After the program has been running for two years, Mechatronics will begin accepting transfer students.

“There has been a lot of interest expressed in the program from businesses, parents, prospective

students and others,” said Professor and Chair of the Computer Science program Michael Soltys, Ph.D. The first CSUCI Computer Science Advisory Board took place in November, 2017 with approximately 20 business leaders in attendance.

“The board will be advising on curriculum and internships and jobs,” Soltys said. “Our students will have no problem getting jobs, but we want them to get the best jobs in the area.”

Each year there are an estimated 300 engineering jobs available in Ventura County. The demand for

engineers is high along what’s known as the “101 Tech Corridor,” which includes companies like Amgen, Haas Automation, Teledyne Technologies, and HRL Laboratories, plus an ongoing need for Naval Base Ventura County at their Point Mugu and Port Hueneme facilities.

As a result, CSUCI administrators, faculty, lawmakers and the community saw the need for qualified engineers and began working toward adding the major at CSUCI. “We are all delighted to move from the planning to the implementation stage,” Soltys said. “We feel like the community

has trusted us with this initiative, and we want to mount a superb program.”

The program comes to the University during President Erika Beck’s second year at the helm.

Once the engineering major is launched, CSUCI will be one of less than a dozen universities in the nation that offers a Mechatronics degree and just one of three CSUs to offer the Mechatronics degree, the other two being CSU Chico and CSU San Luis Obispo. Adding an engineering major to the curriculum at CSUCI provides an element of convenience for students of all ages who no longer have to face a long commute, or for older students already working the area who can’t attend classes at an out-of-county university.

Mechatronics is a quickly-growing area of engineering that includes aspects of control theory, computer science, electronics, and mechanics.

“It’s an engineering degree, so students who graduate with this degree have learned the principles of engineering so they can work in any area of engineering,” Soltys explained. “The focus of the program is the software that animates mechanical devices.”

Plans are already in the works to apply for accreditation from the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), a nonprofit, non-governmental accrediting agency for programs in applied science, computing, engineering technology and related fields.

Soltys said gaining ABET accreditation will be a priority as the accreditation will open up even more opportunities for graduating students. ABET accreditation provides assurance that a college or university program meets the quality standards of the profession each graduate intends to enter. CSUCI plans to seek ABET accreditation within four to five years.

The long-term advantages to pursuing a degree in Mechatronics are many. Those who graduate with a degree in Mechatronics can expect great career mobility because of the expertise they will have in a variety of engineering skills. This skill set is already in demand by

prominent global enterprises in the automotive, aerospace and consumer products sectors and in technology firms that manufacture and supply software components and equipment. Also, graduates can go on to establish their own firms or take advantage of research opportunities in the fields of bioengineering or nanotechnology.

“We are so enthusiastic about the addition of Mechatronics at CSUCI,” said CSUCI President Erika D. Beck.

“This new engineering major is an example of the deep and wideranging skill set that will prepare our graduates for a 21st century job market. We have a talented faculty, state-of-the-art laboratories and an excellent curriculum ready for our first cohort of engineering majors.”

Raised in the picturesque, small mountain town of Sun Valley, Idaho, Karla Chouhan learned to appreciate nature and the abundance of beauty around her.

By the time she was ten, she was already photographically telling stories of her surroundings, which was the beginning of her dream career.

Karla left Idaho to pursue her love of photographic arts and in 1991 she graduated, from the internationally renowned Brooks Institute of Photography with a degree in Commercial Photography. After graduation she interned at NASA-JPL in Pasadena, recording images of scientists, visiting politicians, and documenting new technology.

She was offered a full-time job with NASA, but decided to expand her horizons and entered the corporate world, shooting everything from annual reports to manufacturing facilities and automobiles. With corporate experience under her belt, she was ready for a new adventure and moved to Nashville where she photographed country music legends including: Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, Garth Brooks, and many others. She enjoyed the variety of work in Nashville, but longed to return to her roots in the West. Earlier this year, Karla opened Karla Chouhan Photography, where her talents are now used for annual reports, websites, brochures, ads, headshots, social media, model portfolios, architecture, weddings and individual and family group portraits.

Karla prides herself on her preparation and planning, noting, “The time spent prepping for a shoot is just as important as the day of the session. Westlake Village Community Park

City of Westlake Village Westlake Village Dog Park Scheduled to be open in late spring of 2018, the new Westlake Village Dog Park is a 1.19 acre park where large and small dogs can safely socialize, play, and exercise off-leash, under the watchful eye of their owners. Features of the new dog park include: a shade shelter with picnic seating, open play natural turf spaces with grass mounds and rock boulders, trash containers, decomposed granite walkways, fencing, landscaping, and dog-themed amenities including drinking fountains, tables, benches, leash posts, pet-waste dispensers and pet wash stations.

Westlake Village Community Park In late 2017, the newest addition to the Westlake Village Community Park was completed and features eight acres of lighted synthetic turf athletic fields for soccer, baseball, softball and other field sports. Offering “Space for all Ages,” the community park provides a onemile walking/jogging trail, skate park, outdoor volleyball and basketball courts, fitness stations, two children’s play areas, restroom/concession facilities, and spectacular views for picnicking. It also provides much needed athletic areas to support the existing regional youth sports organizations, while creating more recreational opportunities for all ages to socialize, recreate and enjoy.

City of Agoura Hills Agoura Road Widening Project The Agoura Road Widening Project was completed in 2017 providing several great benefits to the community-atlarge. In addition to the widening of the roadway, the project features new meandering sidewalks, bicycle lanes, landscaped medians and street lights to provide safety while enhancing the roadway’s visual appearance. The city was also able to add utility lines and fiber conduit along Agoura Road. The infrastructure development for the Agoura Village Specific Plan Area was part of this project and sets the stage for future mixed-use amenities through unique walkway areas, benches with views of the surrounding area, and diagonal parking stalls. The project was possible due to Measure R funding and the partnership developed with Los Angeles Metro.

U.S. 101/Palo Comado Interchange (Design) The city completed the final design phase with Caltrans to make the necessary safety improvements to the overcrossing. This interchange project was a collaboration between the city, local residents and business to create a consistent look similar to adjacent neighborhoods through unique landscaping, artistic pieces, and fencing/barrier options. will include seismic upgrades to the bridge structure, addition of sidewalks and designated bicycle lanes, on and off ramp safety improvements, and enhanced traffic movement. This helps the improvements respectfully blend in with the existing area that serves as the “Gateway to the Santa Monica Mountains.� The project construction is funded through Measures M and R, which provides regional transportation enhancement funds through Los Angeles Metro. The project construction is scheduled to begin in spring 2018.

The city of Thousand Oaks installed five new traffic lights that utilize a flashing yellow arrow signal in an effort to shorten wait times at signals operation with protected left-turn arrow. The new flashing yellow arrow traffic signals have been installed on Thousand Oaks Blvd. at Dallas Dr., Moorpark Rd. at Thousand Oaks High School Driveway, Hillcrest Dr. at Marin St., Thousand Oaks Blvd. at Rancho Road and Thousand Oaks Blvd. at Dusenberg Dr. The flashing yellow lights may not be operational during peak periods at all intersections in order to minimize left turning conflicts with through traffic.

The city of Thousand Oaks partnered with local utility companies Southern California Edison, Spectrum, and Crown Castle to improve Thousand Oaks Boulevard by removing approximately 1.5 miles of overhead electrical wires and 53 electrical poles, from Duesenberg Drive to Westlake High School at Via Merida. The project benefits include: increased safety, enhanced aesthetics, improved pedestrian access, limit future tree topping and increase reliability and provides room for the Westlake High School future stadium expansion. This large scale project was completed on time and $1 million under budget.

CAREER EDUCATION

Enters a New Age in the Conejo Valley

By Dave Schermer The buzz of table saws and drills fills the air at Thousand Oaks High School as students frame a floor in a fully equipped wood shop. Just across campus, another group of students are using state-of-the-art computers and software to learn about the booming high-tech field of mechatronics. The two classes represent a new, expanded approach to Career Technical Education (CTE) that’s giving students real-world skills to help them succeed whether they’re heading to college or directly into the workforce.

“In order to be competitive these days, students need a combination of academic and technical skills,” says Dr. Tiffany Morse, Executive Director for Career Education at the Ventura County Office of Education.

“They need a strong academic foundation, but having hands-on practical skills gives them a competitive advantage when they apply to college or start looking for a job.”

TOHS began offering its new mechatronics class just this year. Teacher Richard Bateman says it’s about using mechanical and electrical engineering to create automated systems for a variety of industries. He gives the example of the process that starts when someone places an order with Amazon. “Students can learn how the systems involved with ordering a package all the way through to delivery are interrelated and how they work together.”

TOHS senior Romel J. Rivas is thrilled to be one of the first to take the new class. “It’s great because we’re getting high-level classes that we’d be taking at the university,” he says. Romel hopes to major in engineering and computer science at UC Irvine and says learning mechatronics in high school will help set him apart from other college applicants. “Other kids who don’t have this opportunity aren’t being prepared and exposed to engineering classes at this level.”

Most of the CTE courses offered at high schools in the Conejo Valley now meet the “a-g” requirements for honors-level CTE courses at high schools in Ventura County, up from zero just a few years ago. This means

first couple of days and now I’m pretty good at it and I’m really interested in this as a career path.” Teacher Lee Svoboda says, “I have so many kids that get a taste of it in here, then they download the programs at home so they can work on it over the weekends and take it to another level.”

more students can learn valuable career skills while earning college credit and boosting their grade point averages.

At the same time, local schools are meeting the needs of students who might be choosing other postsecondary options after high school graduation. Daniel Bell teaches a Construction Basics course at TOHS that lays the groundwork for high-paying careers which don’t require a college degree. “Plumbers, electricians, HVAC repairmen make excellent money.

You’re talking $65,000 a year entry level. Some of them are making $80,000 to $150,000 a year,” he says.

“The stigma that’s been around the trades for a long time is melting away little by little.” TOHS junior Daniel McDonald is considering careers in construction or law enforcement and says it’s his favorite class of the day. “I love it because it’s hands-on and it’s different every day.”

The recent growth in the variety and quality of CTE offerings is thanks in large part to VC Innovates, a countywide initiative run by the Ventura County Office of Education and the Ventura County Community College District. VC Innovates works with schools and businesses to develop courses and build educational pathways that prepare students to meet the workforce needs of local employers. Since its inception in 2014, VC Innovates has funneled more than $23 million in grant funding to local CTE programs.

As an alternative school, CVHS serves students who have had trouble in a traditional high school setting.

CTE Coordinator Cameron White says the school tailors its career education classes to the students’ interests, such as art and design. “Our job is to take their passion and say your stuff does matter, so let’s get it into a venue where the world can see it,” he says.

That includes teaching the students how to create a business plan and use technology to market their work.

Career education options for local students extend beyond their campus boundaries. Many of the courses include internships, job-shadowing and field trips. In October, TOHS students got to tour the gigantic Haas Automaton manufacturing facility in Oxnard to learn about career opportunities in their own backyard.

VC Innovates also hosts a series of dinners called Entrée to Employment in which students share a meal and network with local business people. Each dinner focusses on a specific industry sector such as manufacturing, healthcare and hospitality.

The result is a tremendous opportunity for students to explore their interests. For example, Westlake High School offers an Environmental Resources Pathway that includes classes in environmental science, environmental field studies and solar technology. And at Newbury Park High School, students can choose from courses in culinary arts, stagecraft and robotics among others.

At Conejo Valley High School, students in the Graphic Production Technologies class use the latest Macintosh computers to learn Photoshop and video editing. Junior Joe Cardenas says the class has inspired him to pursue a career in movie editing or graphic design. “I had no idea what I was doing the

s the economy has begun to improve and signs of production and job growth become more consistent, your business may decide that hiring a new employee is the next step in growing your market share.
