ONE OF THE NEWEST ADDITIONS TO THE CRAFT BEER SCENE IN CONE JO VALLEY B Y A D A M H AV E R S TO C K

A

lthough Five Threads Brewing Company in Westlake Village has the look and feel of a hometown brewery, the reality is that this operation is a well-planned brewing company that in the near future will become a household name. In October 2015, Managing Partner and CEO Tim Kazules, along with Co-Founders Michael Pryor and Neil Shirley, officially opened the doors of Five Threads Brewing, LLC and are already seeing amazing growth.

Tim was inspired to start a craft brewery while still in graduate school earning his MBA. A work conference in 2009 took him on a trip to Denver, Colorado – the Mecca of American craft beer. After a trip to The Great Divide craft brewery he had an epiphany. As he put it, “the sky opened up and I could hear the angels singing.” It was then that he realized he was destined to brew beer.

The name Five Threads Brewing is a play on two different beer concepts.

A thread is an old term referring to a portion of beer (people used to order a mix of multiple beers at a bar). Five refers to the number of ingredients Tim uses to make beer: water, malt, hops, yeast and the passion of beer brewers and drinkers.

Tim keeps his four flagship beers available on tap all year round and also has two beers on rotation on his “Core Series” taps. All together Five Threads Brewing has produced a total of 11 beers. The brewery is open Wednesday through Sunday and already sees a good crowd on Fridays and Saturdays, despite only being open for six months. The brewery can easily house groups of 20 in addition to its regular crowd and also offers pubstyle food, which is delivered from Merlin’s Kitchen a few doors down in the same business complex.

In addition to the brewery, you can also find Five Threads Brewing on tap at various locations throughout the region including Wade’s Wines in Westlake Village, Rusty’s Bar and Grill in Simi Valley and the Dugout in Simi Valley with new locations popping up each week.

Tim said he wants Five Threads Brewery to be a place for beer drinkers of all levels. “My ideal customer is someone who wants to talk craft beer and learn more about it. From the beginners to the beer aficionados,” he said.

Wired for Westlake Village Newest Councilmember Kelly Honig

A

s the newest member of the Westlake Village City Council, Kelly Honig is ready to hit the ground running. Since 1992, Kelly has lived in the Conejo Valley and has been a resident of Westlake Village since 2001. Her longtime history with our community has provided her with the background and inspiration to build upon the great success of Westlake Village.

Born and raised in Sacramento, Kelly attended UC Davis and the University of the Pacific’s McGeorge School of Law. She practiced Maritime Law for 14 years before deciding the workload of a lawyer wasn’t what she wanted in life. Hearing a greater calling to community service, she served several years as the director of development for Saint Patrick’s Day School in Thousand Oaks and was the vice president for fundraising and chair of the Direct Donation Program at White Oak Elementary where her children attended.

Village City Council about the recreational opportunities in the city, including the Summer Concert Series, Fourth of July Parade and Fireworks, the Westlake Village Reads Program and the City Celebration. She also served on the steering committee for the new Westlake Village Community Park.

Kelly has many ideas for how to continue to make Westlake Village a great place to live, but also praises the great work that existing and previous staff and councilmembers have done to make Westlake so wonderful. Some of her goals include making Westlake Village a more walkable town, beginning with a passive use park on Lindero Canyon Boulevard, as well as finding funding to extend the parking lot at the base of Westlake Community Park. Kelly also believes the city can accomplish the redevelopment of the former Westlake Hospital site and create a project that will be both beneficial to the property owner and the city, but also something local residents will want to have in their backyard.

She has been married to her husband Keith Honig for 26 years. Her son, Charles, is an Agoura High School graduate currently attending Kelly says the job of city Kelly Honig touring Fire Station 144, learning about public safety in Westlake Village.

University of Oregon and councilmember is much her daughter, Meredith, is a senior at La Reina High School. Kelly is bigger than she anticipated. “I have a lot of respect for the other a big fan of sports, specifically tennis, baseball and basketball and is councilmembers,” she said. “You have to know a lot more about a Dodgers and Red Sox fan. In fact, Kelly’s love for playing tennis at everything. Budgetary things, public safety, water issues, tree issues Westlake Athletic Club is just one of the reasons she chose to make and more. The breadth and depth is far greater than people think.”

I

n April 2009, our almost 3-year-old son Jarren became very ill with what we thought was the flu. After four days of relentless flu-like symptoms, we went to the emergency room where he was given IV fluids for severe dehydration and tested positive for Rotavirus. Once home, his Rotavirus symptoms stopped but he never seemed to fully recover. We noticed that his stomach was bloated, his fingers and toes were cold and he spiked fevers intermittently. This didn’t set well with us or his doctor so we were sent a couple times to the hospital for blood work, X-rays and ultimately a CT Scan.

A CT scan revealed a mass on Jarren’s liver, and with that news we immediately found ourselves in the emergency room at UCLA.

After a traumatic night, a room was found for us on the pediatric floor. One day later, further tests and a liver biopsy confirmed the suspicion of cancer. Specifically, hepatoblastoma – a solid pediatric liver cancer with a one-in-a-million diagnosis.

Newly Elected Councilmember Lynda Northrup I

n November of 2015 Linda Northrup, a local resident and lawyer was elected to the Agoura Hills City Council – filling the seat vacated by the retiring John Edelston. While she may be a new member to the city council, Linda’s story in Agoura Hills begins well before the founding of the City.

Linda’s parents moved to Agoura Hills in 1971. Her father found work in Hollywood and her mother insisted the family move to the area because of the great reputation of the Las Virgenes Unified School District. Linda went to Agoura High School (the first councilmember to do so) and attended both UCLA and Hastings Law School. After finishing her education, Linda moved back to Agoura Hills in 1982 and began her legal career working for a firm on the west side of Los Angeles. In 2006 she married her husband David, also a lawyer, and opened their law firm Northrup Schlueter in Conejo Valley.

Linda has a long resume of community involvement in Agoura Hills. When her daughter was young, Linda volunteered for her schools, most notably with the boosters for the music program at Agoura High School. After her daughter moved away to college, Linda decided to get more involved in her community and signed up her office to participate in the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training program for emergency and disaster readiness.

She also was appointed to the Agoura Hills Planning Commission to replace the vacancy created by the election of Illece Buckley Weber. As part of that role, Linda was heavily involved in the development of the Agoura Village Specific Plan. This plan, which solicited a huge amount of community input in its development, is a mixed use residential and commercial plan covering the area near the intersection of Agoura Road and Kanan Road. Linda speaks with pride of her work on the project, realizing that we need to have great planning to develop appropriate space in the city while preserving what makes Agoura Hills great; the majestic vistas of the Santa Monica Mountains seen from every single neighborhood.

When asked about her plans as a councilmember for Agoura Hills, Linda said one of her primary concerns is making sure the city is ready for the effects of El Niño. As she explained, “It’s great that we are getting the rain we need to get out of this drought, but we need to be proactive and make sure we are working on conservation so we don’t get back into a drought.”

Linda also wants to see the retail centers in Agoura Hills thrive. As she put it, “Retail is going through a transition. We need to figure out what, if any purpose, brick and mortar retail is going to serve in the future – but I want to stay the course [on building retail in Agoura Village].”

The most exciting thing about Linda Northrup is her energy and passion for service. “I don’t do something unless I am going to do it well,” she said. Anyone who has ever met her is likely to agree.

In the San Bernardino incident, the first officers were on scene in three minutes. In the first hour, there were over 300 law enforcement officers present. Making it through that initial time is your goal.

When police arrive, their first mission is to stop the threat. Shelter in place and try to point out the gunman’s location. If you can, exit the building in the direction the police came from. Do what the police tell you to do, keep your hands in plain view and try to remain calm.

Workplace safety can be a difficult subject to talk about, but it is the one conversation that could literally save your life.

aura Lloyd, a finance and business operations executive with more than 20 years of experience, and Guy Matthews Dee, a professional stylist with over 25 years in the industry, combined their talents to open Rootementary in Westlake Village in October 2015. Their vision was to create a business focused on filling a need that was previously not conveniently available to customers: a modern, unique hair-coloring salon, dedicated to providing exclusive color treatment and maintenance for all customers at a modest price point.

“We offer clients a menu of services ... everything from a quick one-hour root touchup, a full color coverage, to a complete set of highlights,” Guy said.

“We are branding a new salon concept: No cuts! It’s all about having your color renewed in between your regular stylist appointments.”

As longtime residents of Westlake Village, Guy and Laura were excited by the opportunity to begin a new business venture in a community they love and were confident this would be the perfect location to introduce their color only salon concept. Laura always wondered why, in spite of so many great blow dry salons, there was nothing out there to take care of root touchups.

“Something happens as you get older,” she notes. “You notice a few random gray hairs at the root and hair line but there aren’t any affordable services out there that keep your hair color looking fresh, restored and radiant in between seeing your stylist for a haircut.”

As soon as a new customer enters the salon, the whole process is timed and streamlined. Each pre-scheduled customer consults with a colorist. Using an iPad, the colorist will discuss all of the available color options. Once the customized color service(s) has been determined, their specific color order will be processed.

The customer then goes through a series of stations, from color application to the luxurious “processing lounge,” where they can relax and enjoy healthy snacks.

“Once the customer is finished processing, the applicator staff will provide them with our signature relaxing scalp massage and rinse,” Guy said. “The colorist will ensure that each customer’s color and overall experience are fantastic before they check out.”

LIFE WITHOUT A WALLET THE BEGINNING OF THE END OF PLASTIC MONEY

s I placed the last of my groceries onto the slowly advancing conveyor belt, I recognized the look of slight irritation on the clerk’s face as the gentleman in front of me pulled out his checkbook, squinting to see the total price.

On the other hand, I had my blue debit card in hand and because once in a while I am still asked for an ID when purchasing a bottle of Cabernet, I had my driver’s license out as well.

When it came my time to pay, however, I recognized the look of moderate dissatisfaction from the woman behind me.

She looked at my debit card like I was about to barter for my groceries with sea shells. Her iPhone was ready to go, and she would only need to wave it at the register to be done with her transaction. I was holding her up with my antiquated plastic money.

This lady, along with millions of younger millennials, is already sold on mobile payments. Her phone is her credit card; it is faster than cash and safer than the plastic card that her bank issued her. Within a couple of years, it will replace plastic cards the way plastic cards replaced paper checks.

HOW IT WORKS – CONTACTLESS CREDIT CARDS

Mobile payment platforms such as Apple Pay, Samsung Pay and Android Pay (see a theme here?) essentially allow consumers to give payment details to credit card processors by simply waving a smartphone over a reader and confirming the purchase.

Unlike a magnetic strip credit card, the account information is not stored on the smartphone. Take Apple Pay, for example: payment information is stored on Apple’s secure server and encrypted so that even Apple cannot see the card’s details. When the phone is waved near the reader, Apple sends a request to use the funds with the encrypted account information, and the bank that issued the card decrypts the details. From here, the bank tells Apple to allow the sale.

Just like EMV chip cards (which as of fall 2015 all American banks issue, and is likely already in your wallet), the burden of security for the data is placed on the bank rather than the merchant. The bank assigns a unique transaction number to every single purchase rather than simply using the credit card number. This prevents clever hackers from reading your chip information and using it to purchase a T.V. from Amazon.

It is, in fact, safer than swiping your card.

GOING ALL IN

While some stores are implementing mobile-only checkout lines, others are testing new extremes. Always competing to be on the cutting edge, some stores in Southern California (although not currently in the Conejo Valley), are beta testing truly top-ofthe-line technology for shopping and checkout. In these stores, customers use their smartphones to scan the barcodes of their items as they shop with the store’s custom mobile app. Much like the self-checkout kiosks in most big name grocery stores, shoppers are both consumer and clerk. When finished shopping, the customer simply approves the payment from a pre-loaded credit card and walks out.

After the beta testing is completed, and the kinks worked out (produce sold by weight, loss prevention, etc.), this may very well be how you shop in the near future.

BUSINESSES SHOULD BE EXCITED

In the early days of plastic cards, businesses passed the nominal 1% or 2% processing fee on to customers. This quickly changed when studies revealed that consumers were likely to spend 12 to 18% more in the store when using a card. Suddenly, they were happy to allow customers to use their card for no fee at all.

While it is still in its infancy, early studies hint increased spending may become even a little higher when using mobile payments.

For business, this means bigger returns and happier customers.

Additionally, using apps that are specific to a store allows the business to market directly to the consumer while they shop. I see you purchased a bottle of strawberry jelly. Did you know we have a sale on crunchy peanut butter? It also allows the store to implement a more targeted loyalty program. A notification could be sent to the customer’s phone to entice the pre-purchase of frequently purchased items at a discount. We see you buy a dozen eggs every week. If you pre-purchase nine dozen right now, the 10th dozen is free!

Allowing customers to scan their items as they shop frees up human resources to ensure that the shelves are stocked to specification and that customers are warmly greeted and guided to the products they want. It negates the need to go through the repetition of scanning items and forcing mundane small talk. It allows the store to allocate more of its floor space to marketing or selling products rather than setting a large section aside for registers.

A revolution is coming for point-of-sale purchases. Mobile payment is convenient for both merchant and consumer. It's edgy and attractive for the largest generational consumer group, appealing to their demand for personal experiences.

The countdown to life without a wallet has begun.

orn from a friendship between two passionate CrossFit enthusiasts and coaches, Chalkline was created to fill a need in the growing sea of competitive CrossFit gyms popping up on every corner. “Our goal has always been to bring the focus of Crossfit back to fitness and health, to make sure it’s accessible to everyone – especially those who might be intimidated by what they’ve seen or heard about CrossFit,” said Chalkline co-owner Emily Cabral, who has been a personal trainer for more than 10 years and a CrossFit coach for seven. “From kids to seniors, beginners to experienced athletes, even those with injuries or limitations, we support everyone.”

CV: Why is a community newspaper

newspaper in 10 communities! How did you become a journalist?

LR: We’re different from a daily newspaper in style and mentality. We’re so invested. When the economy was crashing, we were getting 10-15 bankruptcy notices a week. We were approached by India to do our printing; it was much cheaper and we seriously considered it. The tipping point for us was the realization that we would no longer be a source for young journalists and publishers to learn their craft. It’s important to stay local.

Lisa Rule: I’m not a journalist; I’m a

business woman. As a teen, I wanted to escape New Jersey and go into the Army. My father said, “you’re going to college” and took me to every college in New Jersey. I said, “Dad, you’d do great at these schools, but they’re not for me” and ended up at Menlo College where I met my husband. Jim (Rule, publisher of the Acorn) was assistant producer of the Love Boat. A friend asked him to go into the newspaper business. It was a two-thirds pay cut but he accepted an offer from the Acorn to be publisher.

We moved to Oak Park, had two babies and then the Acorn went up for sale. On our wedding anniversary, we were bidding for it and got it! My first reaction was, “What have we done?!”

CV: You don’t often hear the words “credibility” and “journalism” together yet the Acorn has a reputation for accuracy.

LR: People come at things with different lenses. If we present all the information, people will make the right decision. To me, the worst thing you can do is editorialize a headline. We send out 144,000 newspapers, yet people can call Jim and me; if we’re wrong, we want to correct it.

In the age of now with the desire to be first, you lose accuracy during the editing process. Many internet journalists are in a rush to publish their work that they don’t spend the time to research and check their work.

CV: Many newspapers have merged or gone, yet the Acorn has grown. Why?

LR: We’re not afraid of bad news or the exposure but there’s so much to celebrate in life: inform, entertain and protect.

CV: What differentiates the Acorn?

LR: The Acorn is how we view the

community, and we think it helps build a sense of community too. We’re a watchdog but not an “I gotcha” watchdog. We want our elected officials to be a success.

CV: Regrets?

LR: No; I work with Jim. My only stipulation was to work from home when the kids were young.

CV: Are you enjoying publishing Beyond?

LR: In 2012, I had cancer and was depressed. Jim kicked me

in the butt and said “Go make something!” I always wanted a magazine and he gifted me one. I love it.
