By: Danielle Borja & Adam Haverstock The state of California is at the forefront of the craft brewing movement with over 900 craft breweries in operation, reaching every corner of the Golden State including the Conejo Valley. According to the California Craft Brewers Association, “91.4% of California residents live within 10 miles of a brewery” and in the Conejo Valley there are plenty of brewery options and a craft beer scene that continues to grow.

Customers are drawn not only to the craft brews themselves, but also the story behind who made them. They appreciate the wide variety of flavors and styles to choose from. Twisted Oak Tavern & Brewery (formerly known as The Lab Brewery) has been a regular fixture in Agoura Hills for eight years, long before the craft beer scene became so popular and in 2016 they were voted the Best Beer Bar in California by craftbeer.com.

Roger Bott, the brewery’s founder and head brewer started brewing when he was much younger while growing up in Camarillo. Roger and his good friend started reading books on brewing beer, then buying supplies from a local craft brew store and eventually joining local craft brewers clubs to get tips from other home brewers. Today, Twisted Oak Tavern & Brewery has an extensive menu of beers made in house with unique names like “Honey I’m Home” Blonde Ale and “After Midnight Moo” Stout.

In the neighboring city of Westlake Village, the brewery scene has transformed numerous industrial retail spaces along Via Colinas into evening destinations including: Westlake Brewing Company, 14 Cannons and Five Threads Brewing Company.

Westlake Brewing Company offers a unique experience in their modern, warehouse location that is sure to perk your interest in the craft beer culture. Newly appointed head brewmaster Josh McCombs leads the team. Josh hails from Devil’s Backbone Brewing Company in Lexington, VA and boasts a degree in Environmental Science and a Master Brewer Certificate from the prestigious World Brewing Academy in Munich, Germany. His knowledge of the field allows him to create a custom, artfully crafted line of new beers. “When I saw the love of local, craft beer in the Conejo Valley, I knew I needed to be a part of it.”

The newest kid on the brewery block, opening in October of 2017, is 14 Cannons Brewery. The name 14 Cannons is a tribute to the owner and builder, Marshall Haraden’s great, great, great, great uncle, Jonathan Haraden who captained the American war ship Tyrannicide in 1777. The ship was part of the Massachusetts State Navy fleet and was armed with 14 Cannons.

He has been brewing professionally for 17 years and began his craft, as many do, by home brewing beer while he was in college in Reno, Nevada. He is proud of all of his beers, but is especially proud of the Patient Pils and the Marooner Marzen – a product of the German-style lagering tank.

Another local brewery hot spot is Five Threads Brewing Company in Westlake Village. The name Five Threads is a play on two different beer concepts. A thread is an old term referring to a portion of beer (people used to order a mix of multiple beers at a bar) and five refers to the 5 ingredients Tim uses to make beer: water, malt, hops, yeast and the passion of beer brewers and drinkers.

In the middle of his 15 year career in the biotech industry, Tim Kazules discovered craft beer while attending a conference in Denver, Colorado and decided to open his own brewery. At that time (spring,

Following graduation from USD in 2010, he moved to Ventura County to build a new research imaging group at Amgen. By October 2014, Tim had become an award winning homebrewer, completed his business plan and raised sufficient funding to leave his Amgen job to build the brewery.

Today, Five Threads guests can choose from three flagship selections, five shades of blonde and three dark & delicious hand-crafted beers. They also host King Trivia Nights, Pint & Mic Night for all the karaoke enthusiasts and seasonal events throughout the year.

ConejoView: You manage one of the most unique and beautiful cities in Los Angeles County.

What are some challenges that come with keeping Agoura Hills the refuge that it is, while providing the high quality of life we have here?

Greg Ramirez: The biggest challenge I believe most City Manager’s face is managing limited resources in an attempt to provide quality services to the community. Finding a balance between preserving quality of life between residents and the businesses is critical to any quality community. Agoura Hills is no different, and by all means, we have the best combination of residents, commerce, open space, city resources, parks and facilities.

CV: Do you have a favorite quote?

GR: Every good deed goes punished.

CV: What is the best advice you’ve ever been given?

GR: My father told me once, years ago, “Do not be afraid to take some risks in life and never quit.”

CV: You’re quietly involved in charity work, as well; could you tell us about your favorite causes and why they matter to you?

GR: I’m privileged to be Board Chair at Senior Concerns. It is an amazing organization that focuses on our aging population and caregivers in the Greater Conejo Valley. It is one of just numerous charities in this region that make it so special; this is my way of helping.

CV: What are you most proud of in your city?

GR: Getting more done with less! We have a tremendous city council and staff that have great vision and are very efficient. It has allowed us to accomplish so many things, such as our new Recreation and Event Center, multiple interchange improvements, Civic Center and Library, revamping the Historical Reyes Adobe site, great parks, the fantastic Agoura Road improvement, the list goes on and on.

CV: Please tell us about your family and what you enjoy doing in your down-time.

GR: I definitely married up. My wife Lauren is a very talented therapist, but an even better mother! We met in my hometown.

We have three children; Gabriel (Gabe), 14, Siena, 11 and Julian, 8. All amazing and different in their own way. And even though they drive us crazy at times, the word on the street is they are really good kids; I guess that’s all we can ask for. As far as down time, there isn’t much of that these days; the kids keep us pretty busy. If I have any at all you can probably find me working in my yard gardening or running on a trail.

CV: Would you please recommend one of your favorite books to our readers?

GR: Born to Run by Chris McDougal.

CV: What keeps you up at night?

GR: Any number of things; it is always something- just part of the job.

CV: Is there anything I haven’t asked you that you’d like to add?

GR: Simply put, I believe our relationship with the Chamber has been profoundly beneficial to our city, community and region. It is a perfect example of how cooperative relationships can make the quality of life better for all.

Since the very first Ferrari models were built in the late 1940s and early 1950s clients had huge freedom of choice in terms of materials, colors and finishes of their cars, resulting in one-off creations tailored to their individual tastes.

Kirk Jewelers has prided itself on designing custom jewelry since 1927. For decades, they listened to their customer’s vision and started a custom design by sketching the idea on paper.

Once finalized on paper, wax was carved to create an image of the piece and if changes were needed, in many cases, the wax would need to be re carved.

Today, clients are invited to “virtually configure” their Ferrari at the dealership with an infinite choice of colors, materials, treatments and finishes. When a client steps foot into the configurator suite to design their dream Ferrari, they are able to view up close various combinations of materials offered and then see on the large screen what their creation looks like in a 360 degree view. They also can sit in a variety of different seats and then select the perfect stitching and trim on the screen in the exact material desired. This level of customization creates stunningly beautiful cars that are each completely unique.

The final vehicle design is then sent to production in Italy at the Maranello Ferrari Factory. Most clients see their creation for the first time when it arrives for delivery at their home or showroom, ensuring an unforgettable element of exclusivity and a proud moment for the creator.

Today, Kirks Jewelers can easily produce a computer aided design (cad) in 24-48 hours with stunning photo-realistic images and a video that shows every aspect of the custom jewelry piece. Some customers design a ring or necklace completely from scratch, while others are looking to make changes to an existing piece. Either way, most cad drawings go from concept to finished product with one or two changes. After seeing both the cad and the video, if a client is still undecided and finds it challenging to visualize their idea, Kirk Jewelers will produce the wax of the image so the customer can actually try it on.

Once the design is approved, the desired metal is selected and the stone supplied or purchased, Kirk’s team will turn the customer’s vision a reality. The final product is a truly unique creation all their own.

Sandy Sigal: I started programming computers when I was 12, originally writing games on my junior high school’s main frame and eventually writing business programs for small businesses as personal computers started entering the marketplace. My first company, Two S Enterprises, was founded when I was 13 and got a computer for my Bar Mitzvah. I sold programs, wrote, consulted and even taught people how to use the computers.

Eventually I was asked to computerize the accounting department of a contractor in Los Angeles and then in New York.

When I turned 17, my girlfriend at the time didn’t want to be dating a computer “geek,” so I gave up computer programming until I ran out of money and started at UCLA. Then I landed a job computerizing an accounting department at a homebuilder. After a year, they turned to their cheapest employee, me,

and asked me to research if the shopping center business made any sense. Shortly after I built my first center in Sylmar, California and expanded to other properties.

The best thing that ever happened to me was buying a shopping center we couldn’t quickly sell which meant I had to learn how to manage, market and make the center successful for the long-term.

That center was in Norwalk, California; I bought it in 1987 and still have it today.

Eventually my bosses and mentors, Lou Berkowitz and Bob Miller, got bought out of their company by a public English homebuilder and I became CEO of the entire company building over 1,100 tract homes and about 25 shopping centers.

I did that until 1997, but never loved running a homebuilding company, nor a public company, and wanted to focus on shopping centers. On April 1 (April fool’s day), I founded NewMark Merrill Companies with my partners, Brad Pearl and Jim Patton.

CV: Newmark Merrill has 70 properties in multiple states; what was it about the Janss Marketplace that attracted you to this iconic but somewhat dated property?

SS: We have shopping centers in three states (California, Colorado and Illinois) and the Janss Marketplace is just such a great property. The community is amazing, very loyal and supportive. The legacy of the center as a place where

people have had incredible memories over the last 50 years is very powerful.

We like to work on projects where the community will benefit from our efforts, and we have the opportunity to create a relationship with our customers and visitors.

CV: The Janss Marketplace has

become such a terrific gathering place and transactional center under your leadership; it’s a destination shopping experience. When you go there, do you see how amazing it is or do you see more that you want to do?

SS: Well like they say at Nike, we have no finish line. Retail always evolves and it is evolving even faster now. The trick is to keep the things that people enjoy and the feeling of the place that people have memories of. You also have to provide an environment that the community can be pleasantly surprised by and a slightly different experience every once in a while.

CV: Every leader with vision has some

failures. Are there any that you can tell us about and what you learned from them?

SS: So many failures; probably more

than successes. When my very first center was built, we didn’t notice until it was done that we mounted the metal façade backwards. At the age of 22, I bought a center that cost over $29 million and promised I could sell it in three years. It is 30 years later and I am still grateful I couldn’t sell it as I learned so much about being a long-term owner. I was very hard on people when I started, as I assumed everyone wanted to work 7 days a week, 12 hours a day.

I lost some really good people, before I realized people work and function differently and can still be very good at 15 | ConejoView SPRING 2018 what they do.

CV: What is the best advice you’ve ever been given?

SS: Do what you enjoy and make sure you find people who you can rely on whether they are your friends, mentors or colleagues. I have been blessed to have a job I love, the same friends for almost my entire life, partners who are incredible and role models who believed in me, much more than I believed in myself.

CV: Who are some of your heroes and why?

SS: My parents – my mom, Gloria, who stood by me as a young single mom (and I was a very challenging kid); and my stepdad who she married when I was 10 or 11. Both pushed me and loved me unconditionally. I also think our tenants are heroes. Everyday they are trying to live the American dream by trying to make people’s lives better.

Politically – I think Ronald Reagan was a great example and even more so today.

He didn’t take himself too seriously, could work with people he didn’t agree with but could disagree without being disagreeable. He had true values that guided his decisions and was able to convey them in way that united people and not divide them.

SS: I read a lot. So right now I am reading Re-Engineering Retail and 3 Days in January about Kennedy and Eisenhower during their transition. My favorite business books are Outliers and The Checklist Manifesto.

CV: What do you like to do in your free time?

SS: I spend a lot of time with my

kids traveling. Last year we hit Cuba, Orlando, Indonesia, Italy, Peru, New York, Colorado, Chicago, etc. I like music, so Coachella is great and I ski every once in a while.

CV: Are there exciting new tenants coming to the Janss Marketplace that you can share with us?

SS: We are always working with different tenants – some we need to convince to come, some need to convince us and some it is just a matter of finding the right space. Most importantly, will they fit in with what we want to accomplish and will they be an asset to the community.

CV: What are you reading at the moment? What are some of your favorite business books?

Ring Brings Smart Security From LA to the World It all started in a garage in Los Angeles. Jamie Siminoff and two college grads were working on the next big thing, but they needed a way to answer the door without stepping away from their work.

A Commitment to Security The Video Doorbell was originally created out of convenience, but that all changed once Jamie’s wife Erin saw it in action. She compared it to caller ID for the front door, and she said it made her feel safe whenever Jamie went out of town for business. With that revelation came a commitment to security, and a new company mission was born: To reduce crime in neighborhoods.

Swimming With the Sharks But despite early interest in this new invention, success didn’t come easy for Jamie and company. The small team introduced the world to the Video Doorbell on ABC’s Shark Tank in 2013. Originally branded as “Doorbot,” the Video Doorbell was unable to land an investment, and the team thought it was the end of the line for their new venture. Then they saw the spike in sales after the show aired, and suddenly this novel idea became a real company with a cause.

The Birth of Ring Although the sales of the original Video Doorbell exploded after Shark Tank, Jamie and team still took the feedback from the Sharks and early adopters to heart. There was clearly demand for the Video Doorbell, but the product and the brand needed work. They wanted to create a brand that appealed to everyday consumers with effective security devices

that are accessible to everyone. An in-depth redesign and rebranding followed, and a new company named Ring was born with a commitment to bringing smart, affordable security to homeowners everywhere.

Ring Around the World The team was surprised by the early success of the new Ring brand. They started receiving images of Video Doorbells mounted by happy customers from all over the world, and they quickly realized that US homes weren’t the only ones that needed smart security, so a global expansion soon followed.

Meet Henry Stern California State Senator, 27th State Senate District

By Adam Haverstock Elected in November 2016, Henry Stern became the first millennial to be elected into the California State Senate. Stern represents the 27th State Senate District which covers East Ventura County, West San Fernando Valley, Santa Clarita and Malibu.

Background A sixth-generation Californian and native of the 27th district, Senator Stern inherited his passion for public service from his family, whose diverse history includes farming and ranching, music and film and both grandfathers serving in various roles during the Kennedy administration.

As a graduate of Harvard University and UC Berkeley Law, Senator Stern has public and private sector experience in education, environmental issues and infrastructure investment. Prior to his current role, he served as counsel to Congressman Henry Waxman on the House Energy & Commerce Committee helping businesses construct clean energy projects. He also taught civics, advocated for juvenile justice and founded a tech incubator.

As a staffer, he was involved in developing legislation, including the most recent infrastructure stimulus plan. “Good bills are like good contracts. When you have a good deal nobody gets everything they want. There is always something for both sides to not like, but the deal is fair,” said Senator Stern.

Work in the Senate

Stern is helping draft legislation for parks and open space bond measures, cannabis safety legislation for young children and creating a digital database used by whistleblowers in human trafficking cases. He supports Governor Brown’s efforts to use the extra 2018 revenues to pay down the State’s debts and put money in the rainy day fund in preparation for the next predicted recession.

Going forward, Senator Stern hopes to work on providing tax relief for small business owners. He believes that money from the Governor’s Cap and Trade Program can be used to fund tax breaks for small businesses. He is also working to develop legislation to provide services to low-level offenders that have been released due to public safety reforms.

Advice For Future Leaders Senator Stern stresses the need for more leaders representing the small business community. It is vital for them to help enact change and not be influenced by lobbyists. “Even if you don’t like what you are watching on Fox News or MSNBC don’t get discouraged. California is going to need more business leaders in the future,” says Senator Stern.

The vision of the Ventura County Council Boy Scouts of America is to deliver the promise of providing a vibrant and uniquely values driven program, making it the premier adventure seeking and character building organization for the youth of Ventura County.

In an effort to deliver the best program possible, Ventura County Boy Scouts of America maintain a trained and dedicated staff to serve their constituents needs including: a Council Service Center that houses a retail Scout Store, staff offices and conference center in Camarillo, Camp Three Falls a developed camp operation spanning over 1,300 acres in the Lockwood Valley of Northern Ventura County and Camp Willett a 536 acre wilderness camp in Ojai.

Programs

Scouting is an ongoing, year-round program with units chartered by organizations (businesses, churches, civic groups, PTA, etc.). These organizations help select the adult leadership, recruit youth and provide meeting space.

By now welcoming both girls and boys into the Cub Scouting program and Boy Scouting starting in 2019, even more youth will have access to the character development and values-based leadership that Scouting promises and be better prepared for future success. The priority is to serve today’s families by bringing the benefits of Scouting to more youth while remaining true to the Boy Scouts of America mission.

Here are a few things you can do to assess your business and set yourself up for success in 2018.

Assess your human resource needs Many business owners would prefer to discuss HR as little as possible. Doing an assessment once a year of your human resources can save you time and money. Do you have an updated employee handbook? When was the last time you shopped around for your payroll service or your employee benefits packages? Checking these items once a year will make sure you are providing the best possible situation for your employees, and they will work harder and more passionately when they know their boss cares about them.

Shop around for insurance This is another big-ticket item that most employers would rather not have to deal with. Shopping around periodically for a better rate on your workers compensation insurance could save you money. The Chamber of Commerce has many insurance professionals as members that can give you a quote to compare against your current policy.

Give your website a checkup For many customers your website is the face of your business and the first stop when they are considering your product or service. Make sure that your website is mobile responsive so it displays well on cellphones.

Check to see if it loads fast and uses the correct tags to be found on search engines from search terms related to your business. Try using a service like seositecheckup.com to see ways that you can improve your website’s performance. Contact a web design company to help you take your website into the 21st century.

Review your business facility needs It might be time for you to assess your facility. Have you been in the same office suite for 5 years or more?

Many businesses choose not to expand because they don’t know where they would put additional employees, equipment or materials. Maybe your business needs to relocate to be closer to your main clients or potential clients. You could have too much space and subletting a portion of your space could be the right choice.

Contact a commercial real estate broker to determine what types of changes you can make to optimize your business.

Review and update your marketing plan It might be a good time to see if the marketing tactics you employ are working. If your business has a marketing plan, hold a leadership team meeting to update it. If you don’t have one, maybe it’s time to create one. Make sure everyone on your team understands your brand, your target customers and how you plan to reach them.

Evaluate your marketing tactics. If you have been sending a monthly email newsletter but cannot show that any customers have come from it, maybe it’s time to switch over to social media posts. If you are spending a large budget on radio advertisements, make sure you are getting your money’s worth. The Chamber of Commerce has many marketing professionals who can help you make or update your marketing plan, or give your company ideas for new strategies.
