ConejoView: You’re a lawyer but you’ve chosen a career managing the Conejo Recreation & Park District; what inspired you to choose this career?

Jim Friedl: I just love recreation, parks and open space. Our family vacations were almost exclusively camping in National or State parks. I went to summer camp as a kid and worked summer camps as a young adult. Of course, I rely heavily on my education and legal background in my role at ConejoRPD. But, I have to say that the experiences growing up in parks, working in summer camps and playing sports gave me essential life lessons and skills that I use every day.

CV: What is the hardest part of your job?

CV: What is your favorite part of your job?

JF: There are so many great ideas for park improvements and programs.

ConejoRPD is routinely looking for ways to fund new projects or programs while maintaining the parks and programs we have. Everyone— businesses, government, households— must make priorities and match spending with priorities. For us, that can sometimes mean saying “no” or “not now” to some really great ideas.

JF: In the early evening or Saturday morning, I will visit various parks, stop and just watch what is going on.

Watching youth sports or ConejoRPD employees interact with kids in camp or observing residents enjoying their parks in dozens of different ways really makes me happy.

CV: What are you working on now that you’re excited about?

CV: What are some aspects of your job that people may find surprising?

CV: What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?

JF: I’m actually inside an office most of the day, in meetings and on my computer. Also, I’ve run into many people, who aren’t quite sure exactly what a Recreation and Park District is. Some think we’re part of the City, some think we are a County or State Agency. ConejoRPD is a form of local government. We were created

by Conejo Valley voters in 1962 as an independent special district with its own jurisdictional boundary and a directly elected—by registered voters—Board of Directors.

JF: Listen. Really Listen. Don’t subscribe motives to others; or read a “tone” into emails.

CV: Who are your heroes?

JF: Teddy Roosevelt–the conservation President. And my parents, they both worked very hard to build our little family here in California—far from the security of their extended families in the Midwest.

JF: We have a variety of exciting park improvements going on in parks throughout the community, the biggest one, starting this fall will be Sapwi Trails Community Park. I’m excited about “Sapwi”— loosely meaning: “house of deer” in Chumash—because it will have miles of trails, plus some unique features like a disc golf course, cross country course, bike skills park and pump track and model glider port. The City of Thousand Oaks and Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy granted $2.5 and $1.7 million respectively to make this $7 million park possible. (and the Chamber was kind enough to write a letter in support of the grant and testify at the SMMC meeting!) We are also working closely with the City of Thousand Oaks and Thousand Oaks Police Department and a nonprofit, Play Conejo, on some really important programs to help kids and families living in tough circumstances.

Pure Water Project Las Virgenes – Triunfo Will Boost Regional Supply

By David W. Pedersen, P.E. Few areas can equal the Conejo-Las Virgenes region for its quality of life. Residents and business enjoy a great climate, clean, well-run and safe communities, excellent schools and many more attributes. Unfortunately, a local supply of water is not among them. All the drinking water in the region is imported from hundreds of miles away, as there is no usable ground water or constantly flowing stream that can sustain local drinking water needs.

Responding to Shortages During the state’s recent five-year drought, area businesses and residents did their part to curtail water use; at one point, demand was down over 37 percent when compared to past use. For decades, local water agencies have encouraged conservation with education and rebate incentives, and the community has responded.

Water suppliers have also made extensive use of recycled water to irrigate parks, golf courses, roadway landscapes, grounds of commercial developments and common areas of residential areas. Twenty percent of all the water delivered by Las Virgenes Municipal Water District has been recycled, which reduces the demand for imported water.

Sustainability Challenge The Las Virgenes - Triunfo Joint Powers Authority (JPA) is comprised of Las Virgenes Municipal Water District and Triunfo Sanitation District. Together, the JPA treats and recycles the wastewater generated by some 100,000 people in eastern Ventura and western Los

Angeles Counties. In response to the drought and ever more stringent regulations pertaining to the discharge of excess recycled water to Malibu Creek, the JPA closely examined ways to address those concerns. In early 2015, the JPA convened a study group, made up of board members, subject matter experts, non-government entities and representatives from city, state and federal agencies.

A New Path Forward After more than a year of exploring options, the study group recommended a “Pure Water Project” that will use surplus recycled water, further process it through an Advanced Water Treatment (AWT) facility and then store it with water in Las Virgenes Reservoir for future use. Prior to use, the purified water would again be filtered and treated before being distributed to customers through the drinking water system. Using this approach, called “potable reuse”, the region’s water supply portfolio increases at a cost that would be competitive with imported sources, while nearly eliminating all discharges to Malibu Creek.

Proven Technology Is potable reuse safe? Definitely. Several Advanced Water Treatment facilities are already online in California and throughout the U.S., with more being proposed. From Monterey to Orange County, to San Diego and across the southern states to Florida, Pure Water Projects use multiple techniques to clean water far beyond state and federal drinking water standards. Using membrane filtration, reverse osmosis, ultraviolet light and advanced oxidation, AWT facilities produce water of exceptional quality that is safe to consume. Drinking water is among the most highly tested and regulated substances in the U.S.

All Water is Recycled From the beginning of time, our planet has had a fixed supply of water that has been used, cleansed by nature and used again; in short, there is no “new” water. For centuries, upstream cities have sent their “used” water downstream. Think of all the cities along the Mississippi River, or closer to home, the populations that live upstream along the Sacramento and Colorado Rivers. By the time water from these sources reaches downstream residents, much of it has already been used several times. And far above us, the International Space Station safely recycles its water for the crews spending their time aloft. Modern water treatment technologies are proven and effective.

The Journey Begins

AWT facility needs a suitable location, brine disposal pipeline and additional funding to supplement amounts already in place for this purpose. In order to proceed, the JPA is seeking state and federal grants and loans, with the objective of minimizing impacts to customers.

The JPA has already been awarded $450,000 by the federal Bureau of Reclamation for design and work on an AWT demonstration facility that will be used for system development, staff training, and public education.

A More Secure Water Future Governor Brown has implemented an initiative called “Making Water Conservation a California Way of Life.”

The message is simple – in the face of climate change and a growing population, water agencies and their customers must become more efficient. The days of wasting water or releasing it to the ocean are over. When addressing the region’s future water needs, there is no single “magic bullet” solution. Planners and engineers know a more diverse supply portfolio that includes potable reuse will provide greater reliability, environmental stewardship for the Malibu Creek watershed and build on the Conejo-Las Virgenes community’s reputation for supporting local solutions that sustain and enhance the quality of life we all enjoy.

To get a jump on the competition, Google offers many free and paid tools and services for both businesses and business owners.

Google Hangouts is a communication platform consisting of voice, live video chat and messaging features with the ability to connect to any device. It’s an incredible tool for businesses to use for small meetings, virtual brainstorming sessions, customer Q&A webinars or even in-office messaging. Google Hangouts simplifies business communication with the ease of having everything you need at the touch of a button.

As consumers spend more time online, advertisers must shift their strategy and meet them where they are if they are going to get their message in front of them.

Google AdWords is an online advertising service for businesses to target their ads to specific customers through keywords associated with the ad. When a user searches for offers, products or services tagged with those keywords, the business pops up on the search, making it easy for consumers to discover relevant businesses and for businesses to engage with interested customers. It’s a simple and cost-effective way to advertise online while monitoring the ad progress with AdWords analytic tools.

With change being the one constant, businesses need to keep up with the latest trends. With Google Trends, businesses can determine what marketing language and descriptive terminology they use on a daily basis and see how searching for these terms has changed over time. It is a helpful tool to keep track of upward and growing trends, to aid in keeping your business and marketing relevant.

Wouldn’t it be great to see how much traffic your website is getting? Google has a tool for that, called Google Analytics that allows users to track how many visitors their website attracts, where visitors are coming from and follow their actions after the first click. With the provided reports and statistics, business owners can take the data and fine-tune their website to appeal to more visitors and improve their online performance.

C.I.T.Y. Thousand Oaks Internship Program The Value of Work Experience for High School Juniors

C.I.T.Y (Community Internships Training Youth) is a six week summer internship program for juniors in high school. Participating students are required to work a minimum of 10 hours a week and attend a weekly career skills course at California Lutheran University. The classes are divided into five sessions, which include: job experience and employer expectations, financial skills and life planning, how to apply for a job and the right job fit, mock interviews, and education decisions.

Nivi Shaham from Newbury Park High School interned for Assemblymember Jacqui Irwin’s district office. As an intern, Nivi worked on two projects: a veterans job fair and a woman’s event. She wrote press releases, made certificates, tracked constituent concerns, worked on casework and events. “I loved the experience and it was a great way to expose myself to politics at a local level. I learned so much more than I could have imagined, it’s really been amazing.” Nivi Shaham’s goal is to attend UC Davis and major in Political Science.

Kelly Jiang from Westlake High School interned with the Conejo Recreation and Park District (CRPD). As a recreation aide for a 3-5 year olds camp, she prepared and assisted Nivi Shaham with crafts and sports activities. Kelly really enjoyed a role that gave her an opportunity to work and interact with kids.

She also gained valuable insight on what goes on behind the scenes in the CRPD office. Kelly plans to attend a college with a strong business program and major in Accounting.

Erin Steckline from Thousand Oaks High School interned at the Reserve of Thousand Oaks, an assisted living facility Kelly Jiang for aging seniors. Erin’s internship focused primarily on caregiving and learning about the senior care industry that she is interested in working in. She plans to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology followed by a Master’s degree.

Giana Longo from Newbury Park High School also interned at the Reserve of Thousand Oaks. With over 150 residents, Giana worked in the facility’s restaurant as a food server.

Erin Stechkline The interactions and conversations with the residents during this role gave Giana so much joy. She made many new friends along the way and is looking forward to more work experience in this industry.

Giana plans to attend collage close to home in California and major in Business.

Over 50 companies in the Thousand Oaks area have participated in this program, providing students the opportunity to gain work experience in a specific field alongside a mentor at each business. This program allows high school students to start thinking about their potential future career paths.

Barone's Pizzeria Los Angles Pizza Pioneer Offers their Secret Family Recipes Right in Westlake Village

I

t all started in 1945, with several siblings— Josephine Barone, Tony, Frank and Mike Arpaia, Joseph Izzo, and Frank Monteleone—coming together to open a small restaurant serving sandwiches and pasta in Sherman Oaks, California. Pizza wasn’t on the menu just yet, until food ran out on a busy day and Josephine put together her mother’s famous pizza recipe, and boom!

“People went crazy for it,” explains Mike Monteleone, son of Frank and current owner with sons Michael, Stephan, and wife Stephanie. Soon Barone’s Pizzeria would become the first restaurant in Los Angeles and Southern California to serve pizza.

Naming a restaurant isn’t easy, but the decision to name the restaurant Barone’s was literally “a sign.” The original restaurant was named Barto’s, and after some debate about replacing the sign to “Italian Kitchen” and budgets, they decided on Barone’s. With the army of six Italian families, working as chefs, bartenders and servers, business was booming. Many decades later in 2006 the original, Barone’s Famous Italian, relocated to Van Nuys and is now run by Mike’s brother Tom. Balancing Business on the Edge of the Box

By Sepideh Yeoh We are always transitioning from one stage of life into another. While we may be experiencing different transitions, we all have one thing in common: change.

Just when we get used to a new stage, things change and we must keep on moving forward and make peace with the new changes. If we shift our thinking and look at change in a positive light and as an opportunity to learn and grow, we’ll be able to make peace through any transition.

With the business world constantly changing, we must think on our feet and keep learning new tools and gain new knowledge to adapt and grow. Many of you may be familiar with the book, “Who Moved My Cheese?”, by Spencer Johnson and Kenneth Blanchard from the late 90s. This simple story involves two mice and two humans faced with change and potentially having to leave their comfort zone to look for new cheese (think opportunities).

In the story, the mice realized the cheese supply was getting low and started on an unknown journey to find new cheese. One man also followed the mice and continued through the maze to find new cheese. The second man stayed put and waited for new cheese to appear; he refused to change his ways of being.

Think of the survival rate of the businesses locally, nationally and internationally that refused to change their business model and the ways they deliver their services and products. Let's look at how we communicate and conduct business in our modern world. Our methods of communication have changed from paper format and notes in the mail to electronic messaging; Snapchat, Instagram, Tweeting (used to be for birds) and new methods being created as we speak.

A look at where we are working from is also a change from the traditional office setting thanks to technology.

It’s fascinating to see postings of office spaces ranging from backyards, garages, mobile offices, the beach, and poolside on social media. We can also do business with anyone in any part of the world. Technological tools have made our world a lot smaller.

With all these changes concerning where and how we do our business, one thing is constant: hard work. No matter how you conduct your business, where you work from and who you provide your service or product, you must invest the time for your business to succeed. But to succeed, whether you are self-employed or an employee, you must be healthy and happy. If you don’t feel that way, take either a quick or a longer evaluation of where you are and how you feel. Find out what’s missing in your life.

What do you need less of and what can you eliminate?

What new knowledge and skills do you need?

Also, as the world changes, you are also changing and going through personal transitions. Some transitions include the empty nest, divorce, marriage, children getting married, and becoming grandparents. There’s a long list of relationship and family traditions that are as old as humans have been on the planet.

So, what does all this mean and how do you maintain peace and harmony during life transitions? Once thing can help lessen this burden: a Toolbox for Transitions (TFT) to create and maintain peace and harmony within your home and work environment.

You need in your TFT: I. Self-knowledge: who are you and what do you stand for. Create a personal mission statement.

II. Support system: Identify who can provide support within your personal and professional circle (positive friends and mentors).

III. Physical well-being: Your physical activity plan, exercise routine; this is something/s you enjoy and want to do (not what you should do).

IV. Work/Life balance: This effort can be challenging because of how we do business in today’s world.

Having access to files and documents and the pressure to let the world know where you are and what you are doing at every moment is draining.

V. Low tech: Think written notes, cards, visits, and phone calls.

VI. Have boundaries: When you are on vacation, be on vacation, work can wait. Your mind and body will thank you.

VII. Your life purpose: At the end of the day, what is important to you? Is it money, status, building relationships and partnerships, giving back? What legacy do you want to leave behind?

You may have noticed that the TFT includes tools that touch on self-exploration and personal development areas. This is because you cannot separate personal and professional emotional wellness. So much of how we react to situations, both personally and professionally, is not necessarily how the situation is; it is where we are emotionally at that time. You may have noticed that when you are in a good place (happy relationship and successful career), you are more patient with life’s unkind moments; you are more forgiving; you are better equipped to deal with issues. This is exactly why you need to dig deep and get to know yourself on the most intimate level. To have a successful career, you need be at peace with who you are and what you want in life.

Remember that change is an inevitable part of life and that stresses caused by these changes are normal; it is essential, however, to redesign your life to better prepare you for the changes ahead. Evaluate and reevaluate your goals and objectives with a future-oriented outlook.

You have heard of “thinking outside the box.” I like to invite you to join me at the edge of the box; this approach allows you to draw energy and wisdom from the past while keeping your attention on what’s ahead. Balancing on the edge empowers you to take things in stride and be less reactive.

Manna Conejo Valley Food Bank

Neighbors Feeding Neighbors By: Jennifer Schwabauer In a recent survey conducted by a regional Ventura County food bank, more than 15,000 households in the Conejo Valley were identified as being “food-insecure,” defined as lacking reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable and nutritious food. And it’s not just families who are suffering. The fastest growing population of food-insecure people in the Conejo Valley is seniors living on a fixed income and soon Baby Boomers will be the largest group of retirees in history and the least prepared to handle the financial burden of retirement.

Fortunately, Conejo Valley have always been a caring and compassionate community, not afraid to meet hunger head-on through its generous support of Manna, the Conejo Valley’s food bank.

Back in 1971, a national recession had aerospace employees in the Conejo Valley being laid off in record numbers. As the number of unemployed professionals grew, so did the concern over their families’ well-being.

That’s when a group of civic-minded people and several local churches banded together to help these families in need. There was no formal thought of creating a

and single location to store and distribute food and for people to receive food. Up until 1984, a small building in “Old Town” Thousand Oaks served as Manna’s first permanent location. With this new location, Manna’s community outreach grew—partnering with schools, businesses, civic groups, faith-based organizations and individuals to provide the foods necessary to stock the pantry.

Today, 45-years after its informal beginnings, Manna is the largest and most respected hunger relief organization in the greater Conejo Valley area helping more than 12,000 people each year feel secure in knowing where their next meal will come from.

Manna’s primary service is its “choice-model” food pantry—a small market-style space where families can choose from a wide variety of pantry items rather than receive a pre-packaged bag or box. This distribution method not only supports a strong sense of dignity among clients, but is an effective distribution method because clients choose food items they know their families will like.

An army of more than 150 volunteers donate over 2,200 hours annually to help escort clients through the pantry, sort and organize food donations, work on food drives, provide leadership, and help raise the funds needed to support our mission: “To feed hungry people in the Conejo Valley.”

Special programs throughout the year serve even more households who struggle to get by.

“60 Days of Holiday”—which runs from November 1 to December 31—provides families with a variety of special holiday foods to augment their regular pantry visit, so every family in need can enjoy a holiday celebration of their own. The Emergency Food Bag program distributes a selection of easy-to-open, non-perishable food items that are pre-selected and pre-bagged—ready for quick distribution in emergency situations such as evictions, loss of a job or flight from domestic violence.

In the last five years, Manna has reached deep into the community to strategically acquire the foods needed for families and individuals to put warm, hearty meals on their table. Manna strives at all times to ”level out” the

It boasts an annual collection record of more than 300,000 pounds of food, providing more than 233,000 meals. Manna’s client families consistently receive an average of 120 pounds of food each month— about two-and-half weeks’ worth.

In order to prepare for the increasing future demand of the retiring Baby Boomers and growing population of seniors, Manna launched a campaign in 2016 to raise more than $2.5 million in capital to allow its relocation to a 3,000-square-foot building in Thousand Oaks. The building purchase and relocation project—now over 53% complete—will transform Manna’s day-to-day operations, but also transform the way it addresses hunger in the Conejo Valley.

The new building space will enable Manna to: •Enlarge the pantry to serve more people at one time •Double the frequency of pantry visits by families from once a month to twice a month •Extend pantry hours to accommodate families who work •Install commercial cold storage to take advantage of large donations of perishable foods •Hold classes in nutrition, meal preparation and financial management Reaching Manna’s goal of $2.5 million in capital funds requires not just commitment from Manna’s Conejo Valley neighbors, but their financial support too. With that support, we can all meet the ongoing goal of reducing food insecurity in the Conejo Valley. While we may wish it were otherwise, hungry neighbors will always be among us—seniors on fixed incomes who often choose between buying medication or buying food; disabled people who are unable to work; and families who struggle to pay the rent or mortgage while buying enough food to put meals together. Manna is a bright spot for these neighbors who realize that they live in a compassionate community who feels strongly that no person should ever go hungry.
