Meet Dr. Evan Antin

C

onejo Valley Veterinary Hospital (CVVH) was founded by Dr. Robert Miller, the famed veterinarian and author, and became the first veterinary practice in the Conejo Valley on Thousand Oaks Blvd. What began as a one-doctor operation, is now a bustling full service 24 hour hospital that has grown to be one of the top facilities in the country serving virtually every type of companion animal – from movie stars to your family pet. One of these doctors has been creating quite a stir in the community, so we thought we’d spend the time to get to know him a little better.

Dr. Evan Antin has been happily employed as a full time associate at CVVH directly following his graduation from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 2013. During his time in Colorado, Dr. Antin studied evolutionary and ecological biology and spent multiple semesters abroad in Australia and Tanzania to learn more about their respective ecosystems and fauna.

While growing up in Kansas City, he spent the majority of his childhood in search of native wildlife including snakes, turtles, and insects. In pursuit of his love for exotic animals, Dr. Antin has always made an effort to seek opportunities to work with wildlife on a domestic and international level to include locations such as Central America, Australia, New Zealand, South America, Eastern and Southern Africa, South East Asia, and a variety of North American ecosystems.

Though Dr. Antin does not have a preferred species that he likes to treat, he thoroughly enjoys treating reptiles and absolutely loves working on large monitor lizards.

Dr. Antin says, “Some of the cases that have really stood out to me include when I performed a cesarean section on a large anaconda boa constrictor; diagnosing diabetes in a ring-tailed lemur; and amputating a forelimb on an opossum.” The accumulation of Dr. Antin’s hands-on experience with exotic animals has prepared him exceptionally with their handling, husbandry, and enrichment. He is capable of caring for small, delicate animals; large, dangerous animals; and of course our beloved household dogs and cats with ease and confidence.

Before joining CVVH, Dr. Antin visited dozens of hospitals in Southern California that treated exotic animal patients. He chose to work at CVVH due to its rich history in the area, he says “This hospital is one of few that sees wildlife animals…I take a lot of pride in that and love giving back to the wildlife animals native to California.” The local Conejo Valley community equally loves Dr. Antin and he has recently gained a lot of publicity beginning with People magazine naming him “Sexiest Beast Charmer” in its annual “Sexiest Man

Alive” issue in 2014 and was again included in People Magazine “Sexiest Man Alive” for 2016. Now the doctor has 582K+ followers on Instagram and 16 million views of his viral video about the animals he sees while working at CVVH. Dr. Antin says, “It’s been a trip! Such an exciting year going viral and getting amazing media recognition all over the US and the world. I hope it continues and gives me the opportunity to continue to share my passion for animals and veterinary medicine.”

Dr. Antin currently lives near Calabasas, California with his dog, Henry, his cat, Willy, his savannah monitor lizard, mangrove snake and an assortment of tropical freshwater fish. Other hobbies of his include traveling, scuba diving, snowboarding, hiking, and weightlifting.

Conejo Valley Veterinary Hospital has been voted best in the county three years in a row and in Ventura County’s Readers Choice 2016. According to the American Association of Feline Practitioners, CVVH meets the level and care to be considered a “Cat Friendly Practice.”

• Conejo Valley Veterinary Hospital is older than the City of Thousand Oaks, founded by Dr. Robert Miller in 1958.

• Today there over 20 veterinarians and 135 staff members at Conejo Valley Veterinary Hospital.

• They treat over 1,000 animals on a weekly basis.

• The smallest known animal treated is a small fish, specifically a Siamese Fighting fish which can grow up to roughly 6.5 cm. The largest known animal treated is an English Mastiff weighing over 200 lbs.

There’s a New President in Town!

Meet Dr. Erika Beck, President of California State University Channel Islands

ConejoView: Tell us what it is about CSU Channel Islands (CI) that inspired you to accept this position?

Erika Beck: As the only four-year, public university in Ventura County, I was inspired by the enduring community partnerships that led to the establishment of CSU Channel Islands. As a young growing University, CI has firmly established an innovative and forward-looking culture that has placed students at the very heart of our campus community.

CV: How has your background uniquely prepared you for your role as university president?

EB: As a founding member of a new institution that opened its doors the same year as CI, I had the opportunity to help build the foundation of a campus that shares a great deal in common with the history and values treasured by the CI community. I hold a Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology from the University of California, San Diego, and as the Provost and Executive Vice President at Nevada State College, I provided leadership that helped to maintain the balance between accommodating rapid enrollment growth and providing high quality academic programs.

CV: What are the most popular fields of study at CI? EB: Psychology, business, nursing, mathematics, biology and art. We are currently working towards launching a program in engineering designed to meet industry needs.

CV: What is the biggest challenge facing CI now?

EB: Securing the resources needed to maintain our commitment to student access and success. We play a

pivotal role in the economic diversification of our region and addressing the changing workforce needs of our industries.

CV: What is the biggest challenge facing higher education in general?

EB: Rethinking long standing practices to better support our students in light of fundamental changes to funding models, student demographics, technological innovation and community needs.

CV: How is this school year going, so far?

EB: Outstanding! We just welcomed the largest freshman class in our history, opened a new 600-bed student residence hall and significantly expanded our dining commons. We also finalized a public-private partnership with a global real estate investment firm that provided us with resources to enrich our academic programs and support some of our future physical infrastructure needs.

CV: What keeps you up at night?

EB: When we discuss graduation rates, we are looking at overall percentages, but each of those numbers represents a real person with a dream for a fuller, more productive life. I worry about every qualified student that we turn away because we couldn’t meet the demand or every student who doesn’t succeed on our campus because we weren’t able to provide them with the support they needed to graduate.

CV: What is the biggest misconception about higher education?

EB: The belief that a college degree is primarily an individual benefit as opposed to a broader public value.

Individuals who hold a college degree are more likely to vote, volunteer and become engaged members of society and elevate entire communities.

A Company for Generations Q&A with Peter C. Jordano, CEO of Jordano’s, Inc.

ConejoView: Thank you so much for taking the time to speak with us! Please tell us about your background.

Peter C. Jordano: Before I joined Jordano’s 57 years ago, I was limited to four years at San Jose State College followed by three years as a military officer in the U.S. Marines. My work at Jordano’s started as a truck driver, something quite different from being a first lieutenant in the Marines. My experience included working a day warehouse, then night warehouse, order desk and eventually a salesman for the company in the Foods Division.

CV: What is the most rewarding part of owning Jordano’s?

PCJ: Seeing our company grow from 95 employees to 600 employees; providing jobs for many employees in the distribution business. Out of 600 employees, over 125 of them have been with the company for 20+ years. For me, that feels good.

CV: What are your goals for Jordano’s over the next few years?

PCJ: In future years we plan on growing our business, while recognizing the constant changes a business must make to keep up with the trends. Habits of people change and along with recognizing that the lifecycle of every business is different, willingness to make those changes.

CV: What are the biggest challenges for your business today?

CV: Please tell us about the different products and services Jordano’s provides and who your ideal clients are.

PCJ: We are very fortunate to service many different businesses on the central coast. In the food business this would include hospitals, prisons, schools, restaurants, casinos, grocery store delis, any place where large size institutional foods are required. In our beverage business this would include hotels, liquor stores, bars, convenience stores, supermarkets, etc.

CV: What is the best business advice you’ve ever received?

PCJ: Move to an outside board of directors. This is key to navigating a family business which has now served 101 years and 3 generations.

CV: What are the challenges of running a family business?

PCJ: From generation to generation you don’t know if somebody wants to be in the business. Oftentimes, people want to be in the business but they’re not capable.

CV: Is there anything else you’d like to add?

PCJ: When you step back and look at how long companies are around or conversely, the failure rate of companies, I think it’s quite an achievement to have adapted and adjusted to be around for 100 years.

PCJ: It is my opinion the biggest challenges we face are things we might not be able to control. For example, lack of rain and the difficulties that this problem brings.

CV: Where do the biggest opportunities lie for Jordano’s?

PCJ: We feel that our biggest opportunities are provided by the potential growth in our beverage business (Pacific Coast Beverage) to the north and our food distribution business (Jordano’s Foodservice) in the central valley to the north.

COMMON, YET PREVENTABLE, ESTATE PLANNING MISTAKES IN BUSINESS AND FAMILY LIFE

Unintended consequences due to mistakes in estate planning can be devastating for a business owner and his or her family, who may rely on the business for their survival.

1. Failing To Plan If you don’t have a plan in place, the government has its own plan for you under the laws of intestate succession, which could result in assets passing to unintended beneficiaries. It also requires your estate to enter probate, which is a long and costly legal process and is part of the public record.

2. Thinking Your Estate Is Not Big Enough No estate is too small to benefit from proper planning. With the Federal Estate and Gift Tax Exemption currently at $5,450,000.00 and $10,900,000.00 per married couple, much of estate planning focuses on smooth and proper transference of assets to your beneficiaries, while reducing capital gains taxes and reassessment of your property for property tax purposes.

3. Believing All You Need Is A Will While a will assists in ensuring your assets will go where you intend, a will must endure Probate.

Money for operating/business expenses and taxes could be tied up in probate administration, thus interfering with the smooth operation of the business. Conflicts between the Executor of the Estate (the person overseeing the probate) and those running the business can also arise resulting in unnecessary legal expenses and court intervention.

4. Gifting Assets Incorrectly to Beneficiaries Proper Estate Planning includes gifting your assets to beneficiaries in the correct manner.

Options include leaving assets outright or in Trust. If you leave assets outright to a beneficiary, their interest in the assets, including 14 | ConejoView

any interest they may have in your business, could be subject to creditors’ claims. If your heir failed to do proper estate planning, a son-inlaw/daughter-in-law may end up owning part of the business you worked hard to build. A Trust can avoid these problems and help ensure that heirs with special needs receive the government benefits they are entitled to.

5. Being Unrealistic About Your Heirs Most clients believe their heirs will get along with each other after they have passed.

Unfortunately, this is often not the case.

Problems can be exacerbated when a business is involved, particularly when a child is employed in the business and the other children are not.

Questions then arise, such as: Does the business get sold? Are there funds to buy out siblings?

Failure to address these issues in advance can result in prolonged and expensive litigation and family strife.

6. Failing to Properly Fund Your Trust It does not matter how well a Trust is drafted if it is not properly funded. Funding is the process of transferring specific assets into the Trust by retitling assets in the Trust’s name. While not all assets are transferred, the failure to properly fund your Trust will require assets left outside the Trust to go through probate. Incorrectly transferring certain types of assets into the Trust can have devastating tax effects.

7. Failing to Update Your Plan Like your business or any other important part of your financial life, your estate plan takes work.

It is not enough to draft your plan and then forget about it. With ever-changing tax laws and

changes in our lives, estate plans need to be updated to reflect these changes.

Failure to do so can result in payment of unnecessary taxes and estate planning goals not being met.

8. Believing All You Need Is a Trust In addition to the Trust, an estate plan will include Powers of Attorney, advanced health care directives, HIPPA releases, a pour-over-will (for when you fail to properly fund your Trust) and nomination of guardians for minor children.

Without these documents if you become incapacitated, a petition for conservatorship will have to be filed appointing a conservator over your estate and person to make both financial and medical decisions on your behalf. This can be a long and costly legal process, which requires on-going court involvement.

9. Thinking You Can Do It Yourself With the plethora of on-line services and self-help books available, many people feel they can handle their estate plan on their own.

Unfortunately, these services and books tend to rely on a one-sizefits-all method and offer little flexibility to reflect issues unique to the individual. While they all claim their documents are “valid,� the real question is: Do they meet my needs? Often the answer is NO! Talking candidly with your estate planning attorney will help you anticipate potential conflicts that can be addressed in the Trust.

Estate planning is complicated, involving issues of tax, business, and real estate law, and is greatly affected by family dynamics.

It is important you work with an estate attorney whose practice focuses on comprehensive estate planning. Many other professionals, including your CPA, financial advisor and business representatives, often participate in the process as well. Plans take time and require numerous meetings and phone conversations. It is important your estate attorney should be one you are comfortable with seeking counsel for yourself, your family and business. Remember you are building a relationship not a document.

If you want to see a business that is built not upon a product or service, but rather the passion of the owners, look no further than Ragamuffin Coffee Roasters. This seemingly quaint little coffee shop in Newbury Park is the result of owners Sarah and Shawn Pritchett spending years actualizing one of their dreams – drinking the perfect cup of coffee.

While Ragamuffin Coffee Roasters opened their doors a little over a year ago in August of 2015, the story of these coffee aficionados goes back much further. Sarah worked as a barista in a previous career and started drinking coffee regularly during college. She did this more to survive the strenuous college lifestyle, but found her passion in the process. Soon her and Shawn’s kitchen counter was packed with devices to make their own coffee.

A little while later while experimenting with roasting their own coffee, Sarah and Shawn decided to invest in an industrial coffee roaster. They estimated that by roasting their own coffee their investment would pay for itself in a few years and before they knew it they were selling their Ragamuffin Coffee to family and friends and at the local farmers market.

Sarah and Shawn believe that coffee is a handcrafted product, made with both quality and heart. They buy only the highest quality coffee, responsibly sourced through direct trade and roast it in small batches, methodically hand brewing to take care in each step to provide their customers with the best. Rather than a corporate coffee store, where you generally order your coffee and go, Sarah and Shawn have created an atmosphere much like the living room in their own home; a place where you want to hang out, relax and enjoy coffee with some good conversation.

harana Sanctuary is a peaceful holistic wellness community that immediately relaxes you when you come in the door. The co-owners, Laurie and Bernhard Staschik opened Dharana Sanctuary (DS) in February of this year in Agoura Hills. They are certified Raja Energy practitioners and Ayurvedic educators. Laurie is also a certified registered yoga teacher and chant healer while Bernhard is a certified massage therapist. With their backgrounds, they have created an accessible and beautiful environment for healing with a bodymind connection.

Raja Energy is a form of energy medicine utilized through the universal energy and the hand chakras, and Ayurveda is the ancient science of self-healing by harmonizing with the seasons, weather, constitution, and period of life with food and herbs.

Their business started with a practical and familial approach. At one time the Staschik family became very sick. “We tried to get help in all directions. We went to the best doctors and scientists who tested us, tested our home, tested our environment and put us on all kinds of medications” says Laurie. “Trying to overcome our difficulties, we moved several times but then our middle child started going to the hospital several times a week and Laurie started becoming sicker as well,” Bernhard says.

Diving into alternative healing, they found Ayurveda.

“We didn’t even know what Ayurveda was at that time, but we felt guided to try it.” After going on an Ayurvedic diet for one month while Laurie practiced chant healing, the family was able to throw away all their medications. “We still had difficulties and then heard that our close friend was doing Raja Energy, an energy healing practice. After healing through Raja Energy, we were completely well.” Through their journey, they discovered that they too were healers, and decided to create an urban oasis for healing and recharging which lead to the opening of Dharana Sanctuary.

One of the services offered is a guided half day retreat they call ‘Dharana Immersion.’ It encompasses Effulgent Yoga, meditation, Ayurvedic education, an energy healing session, sharing and a vegetarian lunch. Bernhard says that, “energy healing gets to the root of the healing issue by unblocking the channels that have been clogged by negative emotions, negative thoughts and a poor diet. We have been able to help people with symptoms of arthritis, ADHD, PTSD, depression, tensions and autoimmune problems - areas in life where many have felt stuck.”

Relocation Specialists for the Conejo Valley and Beyond

A

nyone who has relocated to the Conejo Valley for a job opportunity has probably come across AIM Resources, Inc - a high quality relocation service that is a staple in the local community. Often confused with a real estate office, AIM is a company that provides for all of the needs of a relocating employee and their family beyond just buying or renting a house, whether the relocation is domestic or international.

AIM was founded by Diane Reese more than 20 years ago in 1993. At the time, Diane was tasked with supporting relocation efforts by a local company called Amgen – now a major player in the global economy. At the time Amgen only had one building, but they still needed relocation services for potential employees coming into Thousand Oaks and the surrounding communities. As Amgen’s needs continued to grow with their expanding footprint, they came to rely more and more on AIM to assist them with relocation services.

Today, AIM Resources has affiliates in markets all over the United States and the world. In fact, when I met with co-owner Barbara Moran, she told me that “AIM Resources can provide services to or from anywhere in the world” through their company’s consultants or through partner companies.

For most of their customers, AIM Resources provides an Area Overview Tour. This includes looking at both houses and neighborhoods near the company where a person intends to work. Generally, this is conducted during an interview process, because part of the decision whether or not to accept a job will hinge on whether or not a candidate wants to live in the community where the business is located.

In addition to the area overview, AIM Resources will often assist with selecting or enrolling the children of job candidates in local schools. This can be as simple as a school drive-by and as involved as a personal school tour or perhaps even a meeting with the school principal. As Diane put it, “each client requires different types and levels of service” and AIM successfully provides these services to meet the individual needs of each client.

Another unique area that AIM Resources can assist with is the immersion process associated with international relocation accounts. For families who come from other countries, often they have customs that are very different from the United States.

Barbara recalled situations where she and her consultants have taken clients to the Department of Motor Vehicles to assist them with getting identification cards or driver’s licenses. Also, AIM consultants are often asked to go with clients to the local grocery store to help identify American foods, or help international clients find the foods they will find suitable.

From corporate housing, real estate services, moving of household goods, property management, car transportation, and even pet movers, AIM Resources’ goal is to enhance the recruitment of top talent and ultimately improve their productivity by offering these essential services.

From Cribs to College: Serving Kids in Foster Care

n 2012, James Storehouse started its mission as a nonprofit to provide emergency resources for children in the foster care system. These resources are requested by public and private child welfare agencies to help expedite safe placements, improve living conditions, and ease transitions for kids in the system. James Storehouse (JS) is contracted with the county to meet these emergency needs and to assist aged-out youth as they transition to independence.

There are over 500,000 children in foster care, many of whom face unimaginable rejection, neglect, abuse and abandonment. The name James Storehouse is inspired by the Bible verse, James 1:27, which calls us to look after orphans and widows in their distress. Children in the foster care system are more susceptible to a variety of challenges such as homelessness, incarceration, teen pregnancy, substance abuse, and limited education. Annually, over 20,000 age out of the system, many without the ability or support to transition effectively into independent living. JS is committed to providing a helping hand to children and youth facing such daunting challenges.

Recently, a 27 day old baby girl was placed into care.

She came straight from the hospital without any belongings, and her foster parents were unprepared 26 | ConejoView

for her arrival. James Storehouse was able to provide her foster family with a beautiful crib, stroller, diapers, clothes, and other essentials at no cost.

James Storehouse has received commendations from both Ventura County and Los Angeles County for their work with thousands of foster children. They have also been featured in two television episodes on Oprah Winfrey's Network (OWN) and on a recent episode of Freeform’s The Fosters.

Aging out of the system: James Storehouse also helps youth who are aging out of the foster care system by helping them set up their first apartments. In October they were able to assist a former foster youth and her two year old son by furnishing their apartment with beds, bedding, a couch, lamps, kitchen table, and other essentials.

When foster youth age out of the system with no permanent family or community connections, they are at high risk of becoming homeless, trafficked, or incarcerated.

One of the top needs of aging-out foster youth is transportation. In a matter of weeks, they can become homeless if they don’t have a reliable and efficient way of getting to and from work. Some youth cannot afford the purchase of a car or are not yet ready to handle the responsibility of owning a vehicle. In response to these youth’s needs, JS began a bike program in 2015 allowing social workers in

Ventura County to make requests for bikes, locks and helmets on behalf of their clients. The foster youth are then able to pick up their bike from the JS warehouse or the social worker or volunteer will deliver it to them. Recently a foster youth was waking up at 4 a.m. in order to walk from Moorpark to Simi Valley to get to work. JS was able to provide a bike and all accessories to care for her and support her independence. The Bike Program is made possible by donations from the community.

James Storehouse Programs: In partnership with local business, JS has helped to develop a new program called Hope Givers to provide housing, mentorship, jobs and resources to local foster youth. JS partners with public and private schools and churches to foster healthy relationships with all of the foster youth in Ventura County group homes. JS also hosts events throughout the year for foster children of all ages, including their annual Back-to-School Free Shopping Event, Christmas Party, Baby Showers, Spring Tea and Prom Prep, American Girl Dream Day Luncheon, etc. These events help to build positive memories for the children in care and also allows the community to develop important relationships with foster children who usually go unnoticed.

The James Storehouse offices and warehouse are located in Newbury Park. Foster youth, social workers, and foster parents shop at no cost for fashion forward clothing, toiletries, shoes, undergarments, baby gear, diapers, furniture, and other essentials. All of these items are made possible by donations from individuals, local businesses, schools and churches. They are located at 3541 Old Conejo Road #117. They are open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. or by appointment.
