RC: All our properties have had a unique economic impact to the community. The Promenade at Westlake was a landmark project for us – we didn’t know what the ‘rules’ were to building a traditional mall so we unknowingly broke them all. nity and together, built a destination that redefined the traditional shopping experience. We introduced brands that previously didn’t have any presence in town like The Grill on The Alley and Cinepolis Luxury Cinemas. We have carried that philosophy on since opening and are excited that there is more to come at the end of this year.

If you look at Village at Moorpark, it’s a one-stop neighborhood destination for parents and business people alike to gather, enjoy the outdoor environment and start their day.

Similarly, The Lakes is another beloved gathering place for locals and visitors to the neighborhood. The beautifully-landscaped lakes, playground and gardens provide the community with an extension to the City of Thousand Oaks City Hall not only through the diversity of public spaces but the multitude of restaurants and retailers on offer.

CV: YOUR COMPANY IS KNOWN FOR ITS FIVE-STAR SERVICE STANDARDS, HOW DO YOU ATTRACT AND TRAIN TALENT THAT CAN DELIVER THAT GUEST EXPERIENCE? RC: At the heart of what we do is a hospitality-first approach with a focus on customer experience. That being said, we pull people out of different industries very intentionally because I want to have them look at what we’re doing through a different lens. It makes it a lot more fun to do that.

CV: HOW ARE YOUR CENTERS/TENANTS ADAPTING TO THE CHANGING RETAIL TRENDS? RC: We develop the highest quality properties and redefine every asset class. We strive to provide unparalleled guest service while maintaining strong community relations. We’re all about the transaction becoming an experience. We strive to make the guest experience pleasant at every juncture. I want you to come onto our properties and feel transformed, like you’re in a better time and place. I care about market share; I also care about heart share. It’s an evolving approach; I believe that you can always do things better.

CV: WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE CURRENTLY FACING HIGHER EDUCATION AND WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO COLLEGE STUDENTS TRYING TO FIND THEIR PLACE IN TODAY’S ECONOMY? RC: One of the greatest challenges facing higher education is affordability and rising tuition costs. This presents a barrier to entry for middle- and low-income students who often have to make the choice between gaining a higher education or entering the workforce at what is now often perceived as a disadvantage. I firmly believe that higher education provides an invaluable foundation and that it’s the single greatest catalyst for opportunity.

That being said, we also need to look at how we can teach differently and how we can teach outside the classroom and provide a fuller education. A part of education needs to happen inside a classroom, a part of education can happen online and a part of education happens by going out and doing things – getting a job, working, traveling. My advice would be to seek on-thejob training as much as you can and when possible, pursue a graduate degree. At Caruso, we invest in the future of our company through a robust summer intern-

a hospitality-first approach to our retail centers - the concierge at The Grove, which we introduced nearly twenty years ago, was the first of its kind - and so to expand into the hotel industry was not only instinctual but also a lifelong dream of mine.

This particular opportunity in Montecito was both exciting and unique as there aren’t many places in the world where you can build 16 acres on the beach. My vision

was to create a home away from home, for both travelers and members of the community. A gathering place with all the luxury indulgences of a five-star resort alongside a nostalgic return to home feeling.

CV: WHAT ARE YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT OUTSIDE OF BUSINESS? RC: Commitment to family, commitment to faith, that’s the way we were raised. A lot happened around the dinner table, there was a lot about the family coming together.

And faith was very important. We never wear it, necessarily, on our sleeves, but I was raised with a deep faith.

It’s this very important part of my life that drives me to give back to others. My focus revolves around underprivileged children who need healthcare and an education and we work with the faith-based organizations in the area that support those children. If you look at what we’re doing in Watts and the inner city, in these really tough environments, we have nearly 100 children now that have a scholarship that we’re putting through school and it’s a really rewarding feeling. It makes me deeply happy.

CV: WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE THAT YOU HAVE EVER BEEN GIVEN? RC: Seek excellence everywhere you go and just do what’s right. You’re never going to always get it right. But if you 8 | ConejoView

try to just do what’s right, you never get into trouble and you really can change the world in very small but meaningful ways and in big ways.

CV: WHO ARE YOUR HEROES? WHY? RC: My dad. My dad was my number one hero. I mean he was this amazing entrepreneur, he had a great marketing mind, but he took on massive challenges. When he started Dollar Rent a Car with one location, he was going up against Hertz and Avis and National at the time they were global companies, and built his company to be the fifth largest car rental company in the world before he sold it.

I just always admired the fact that he worked hard but he never gave up and he always found time for the family and always found time to have fun. I mean we watched him and his friends and my mom just have a good time. And it taught us you can actually do a lot in a day.

CV: ARE THERE ANY NEW PROJECTS ON THE HORIZON THAT YOU CAN TELL US ABOUT? RC: We are excited to begin work on our newest project at 333 La Cienega, which was actually one of the first properties the company acquired. The 145-unit mixed use apartment project will set a new standard for residential living. While most of the project is market rate, we will also include affordable units.

WHEELS FOR THE WORLD Nearly 1 billion people around the world live with disabilities; many of these individuals and their families live in poverty, pain, and despair. Joni and Friends, a local nonprofit headquartered in Agoura Hills, is on a mission to change this.

For the past 40 years, Joni and Friends has been dedicated to meeting the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of people impacted by disability around the globe by providing practical care and hope through life-affirming programs and resources for special needs families, churches, and communities.

Joni Eareckson Tada, founder and CEO of Joni and Friends is one of the world’s leading disability advocates. She became personally acquainted with disability when a diving accident in 1967 left her, then 17, a quadriplegic in a wheel10 | ConejoView

chair. After two years of rehabilitation, she emerged with new skills, such as mouth art, and a fresh determination to help others in similar situations. In 1976, she told her story in her best-selling autobiography, “Joni,” which led to a feature film of the same name and introduced her to people around the world. With newfound international recognition, Joni began receiving letters from people searching for hope and encouragement in the midst of their disabilities and chronic conditions. As Joni began responding to letters with the help of friends from her kitchen table, Joni and Friends was born.

Since 1979, the organization has grown from a small team responding to letters to a global organization. The Joni and Friends Wheels for the World program provides the life-changing gift of mobility

to people in developing countries who are tragically often excluded from their community. Through this redemptive ministry, used wheelchairs are collected by volunteers across the United States and restored by inmate volunteers at correctional facilities, then distributed and fitted by a loving team of physical therapists to people who could have never afforded a wheelchair. With each mobility device, Joni and Friends also provides the message of the Gospel and connects those served with a local church community. By 2020, Joni and Friends expects to have provided more than 200,000 wheelchairs to people with disabilities around the world!

ship, and outreach. We also train and mentor people with disabilities to exercise their gifts of leadership and service in their churches and communities.” – Joni Eareckson Tada Joni and Friends also provides Family Retreats, giving a week of respite and refreshment to special needs families who are often faced with the job of 24/7 caretaking. Through this outreach that happens across the United States and around the world, more than 63,000 families have been encouraged and rejuvenated through Bible-based teaching, age-appropriate fun activities, and meaningful connections with other families.

Beyond the many local and international outreach programs, Joni and Friends also offers disability ministry training for individuals, churches, and students in higher education. The Joni and Friends Christian Institute on Disability provides educational

courses, internships, and houses a policy center. As the organization continues to respond to messages from people in search of help and encouragement, Joni and Friends also provides the message of hope beyond suffering through media outlets such as the Joni and Friends radio program, television episodes, and ministry podcasts. With this accelerated growth, the Joni and Friends headquarters recently grew into a two-building campus at their Agoura Hills location.

Joni Eareckson Tada will tell you that sometimes it’s hard for her to believe that her worldwide disability ministry began with just a few mouth-art sketches drawn by a young woman who discovered the hope of the Gospel in her wheelchair. But even after 52 years in a wheelchair and four decades of ministry, Joni will also tell you that there is still more to do. HOW WHEELS FOR THE WORLD WORKS: STEP 1: COLLECTION Volunteers, known as “Chair Corps,” collect used, manual wheelchairs across the United States.

STEP 2: TRANSPORTATION Transportation of the wheelchairs to restoration shops and shipping ports is an ongoing need. With over 10,000 wheelchairs collected each year, we are always looking for people to help.

STEP 3: RESTORATION Wheels for the World currently restores wheelchairs at 15 federal, state, and private correctional facilities located in 12 different states, and we’re looking to grow. Inmates are trained to restore wheelchairs to like-new condition.

STEP 4: DISTRIBUTION Each wheelchair recipient receives a custom-fit wheelchair and training in wheelchair use and upkeep. Team members also present each recipient with a Bible and the Gospel message.

That’s because, like all organic waste, the banana peel will break down in a landfill and, as it does, it will emit methane – a potent greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming.

Organic waste from food, agriculture, and even our sewer systems and landfills account for 80 percent of all methane emissions in California. So, should California outlaw bananas, force farmers to move to other states, or prohibit people from flushing the toilet to avoid these emissions? Of course not.

It turns out there is a much easier and sustainable solution that is already being used to clean up the heavy-duty transportation sector here in California. It is called renewable natural gas, or RNG. RNG is made in a natural process that takes the waste from our kitchens, farms and yards and converts it into energy. So, the banana peel you threw out today, could help to heat your home or cook your food in the future.

Today, most RNG is used in the transportation sector. Chances are that the bus you see going down the street or on the freeway with a “CNG” sticker on it is being powered by renewable natural gas. Over the last five years, RNG use as a transportation fuel has increased 577 percent, helping displace over seven million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (how greenhouse gas emissions are measured). That’s equal to the total energy used by more than 868,000 homes for one year.

At SoCalGas, we are working to build on RNG’s success in the transportation sector by making it available to fuel the homes of our 21 million customers across Southern California. As part of our vision to be the cleanest natural gas utility in North America, our company has committed to replacing 20 percent of the natural gas we deliver to homes and small businesses with renewable natural gas by 2030.

Power-to-Gas -- we can take surplus solar and wind energy and convert it into a hydrogen gas, that can be stored in existing natural gas pipelines allowing the energy to be used when it is needed – even months after the solar and wind power was first produced.

That renewable hydrogen can also be used to power things like fuel-cell cars and trucks, and it can also be combined with excess carbon dioxide to create methane – the chemical makeup of natural gas.

Using natural gas in homes can play an important role in helping California reach its environmental goals and in keeping utility bills affordable for families and small businesses. Replacing just one-fifth of California’s traditional natural gas supply with RNG would lower carbon emissions equal to converting all of our buildings to run on more expensive electric only energy and at significantly less cost.

Why am I making this comparison?

There are some policy makers in California who want to eliminate any use of affordable natural gas in the homes, and there is a proceeding at the California Public Utilities Commission that is considering doing just that. Chances are you are not aware of this discussion or this proceeding. But you should be.

If this policy is adopted, it would require all home and building owners to convert their natural gas appliances to all-electric ones.

If you think getting rid of your fireplace and barbeque and buying all new electric appliances sounds like a farfetched and expensive proposition, you’re not alone. A recent poll shows that two-thirds of voters oppose eliminating the use of natural gas and 82 percent oppose eliminating the use of natural gas if consumers’ monthly energy bills would significantly increase.

Using RNG to reduce emissions in buildings is also up to three times less expensive than any all-electric solution and it allows families to keep enjoying natural gas cooktops, fireplaces, barbeques and their other gas appliances, all while helping California meet its ambitious goals to reduce greenhouse gas emission.

Advancing renewable natural gas will also help ensure the state’s energy infrastructure is ready and available to help California tackle the next big challenge in renewable energy – storing vast amounts of solar and wind energy when the wind isn’t blowing, and the sun isn’t shining.

Leaders at the International Energy Agency recently recognized the role natural gas infrastructure can play in advancing renewable energy storage and the wide scale deployment of renewable, zero emissions hydrogen.

Using a relatively new technology called

Power-to-Gas technology is not science fiction. It has already been deployed at the University of California, Irvine where hydrogen produced from solar panels is being blended directly into the campus’ natural gas system, helping displace fossil fuels and reduce emissions. Large scale Power-to-Gas projects are also underway across Europe.

ConejoView: Please tell us about your background and how you came to be President of CSUCI.

Dr. Erika Beck: I am a California native and earned

my Ph.D. in experimental psychology from the University of California, San Diego. Prior to joining CSU Channel Islands, I served as Provost and Executive Vice President of Nevada State College and I have devoted my entire career to increasing access to the transformative power of higher education.

CV: When you were in school, what were your career goals?

Did you consider university leadership early on or did something else inspire you in this direction?

EB: At the age of 12 I read a book on psychology from cover

to cover and right then and there I knew I wanted to become a psychologist. When I was in graduate school, I was offered the opportunity to teach my first college course and I fell in love with academia and realized I wanted to spend my career on a college campus. I am dedicated to a career in higher education because I believe having a college degree not only transforms individual lives but an educated populace is essential to our democracy. Educated citizens are more likely to vote, volunteer and become engaged members of society. Throughout my career I have seen firsthand that universities enhance human potential and in so doing make our world stronger and more resilient. I cannot imagine a more fulfilling career than one that helps to foster a more inclusive and equitable future for us all.

CV: What are the characteristics you consider key to a student’s success while in school and after graduation?

EB:

CV: What are some aspects of your job that people may find surprising?

EB: Being a university president is

really like being the mayor of a small city. Our campus sits on 1,200 acres, has nearly 1.3 million gross square footage of building space, we have more than 1,600 students who live on campus and there are more than 2,000 community members living in our University Glen residential development. In addition to all of our educational endeavors, we have our own police department, power plant, solar array, grounds crew, dining and catering, and health center. More than 1,000 faculty and staff devote their daily lives to supporting the educational aspirations of more than 7,000 students and serving as an intellectual and social resource to the community we are so proud to serve.

CV: What makes CSU Channel Islands such a unique university?

EB: At Cal State Channel Islands,

we are reimagining higher education to serve a new generation and a new era. The way we teach our students is innovative, interdisciplinary and unique. We offer hands-on, immersive educational experiences that take students out of the classroom and instill in them the critical-thinking, communication and problem-solving skills they will need in order to solve the problems of tomorrow.

For example, last semester our students had the opportunity to study the presence of microplastics in moon jellyfish proliferating in the Channel Islands Harbor and to help understand the impact of the Woolsey Fire. We are committed to providing learning experiences that engage our students with the community. Last year alone our students performed 46,000 hours of service in partnership with over 68 Ventura County organizations, with an estimated value of $1.3 million to the community. This type of experiential learning is just one of the many truly unique characteristics that sets us apart from other universities.

CV: What are you most proud of professionally?

EB: I am proud of all that CSU Channel Islands has achieved in recent years, including being ranked 23rd in the nation for improving the social and economic mobility of our students, graduating record number of students each spring, and becoming the fastest growing campus in the California State University system. I am also very pleased that an economic impact study found that CSUCI generated $297 million in economic output in Ventura County in 2016. I am also incredibly proud that we are a nationally recognized Hispanic Serving Institution and serve as a role model for other universities that seek to truly serve a largely first generation, historically underserved student population.

The number one characteristic that is key to succeeding in college is what we call grit – the determination to persevere in the face of setbacks.

Another key factor is support from peers. Our peer mentoring program is a great example of that. We have found that students look to other students for information on how to succeed in college. Our peer mentor program provides peer-to-peer support for our students who need help navigating the complexities of the university experience. Most of it is not academic, but rather “non-cognitive” factors.

These include the social, emotional factors which provide our students with a sense of belonging, self-efficacy and the grit I mentioned. Who could be a more credible role model than another student who just successfully completed their first year in college?

We are finding that our peer mentor program is an effective way to help our students reach their educational goals and walk across our commencement stage to receive a college degree.

CV: What brings you joy?

EB: Shaking the hands of our

graduates as they walk across the commencement stage and receive their diplomas. The look of pride on their faces and on those of their family members who supported them and know the incredible sacrifice and hard work that led to that moment is beyond compare. Our graduates stand as role models for what is possible when opportunity meets talent and dedication. Obtaining a college degree elevates every student and, just as importantly, changes their family trees forever. This is the essence of what we do and it is at the core of our commitment to academic excellence.

Knowing I play a small role in making that happen brings me infinite joy.

Did you know that all California employers with five or more employees located anywhere must now provide sexual harassment prevention training to all employees by January 1, 2021?

The minimum count of five employees includes seasonal and temporary hires as well as independent contractors. Seasonal and temporary employees that are hired to work for less than 6 months are required to train by the deadline January 1, 2020.

This sexual harassment prevention training must be two hours in length for California supervisors (and to out-of-state supervisors of California employees) and one hour for all non-supervisory employees.

At the time of publication, the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing (DFEH) has said all employees must be trained in the 2020 calendar year to comply with the January 1, 2021, deadline. This means that all employees, including supervisors, who trained in 2018 or before must retrain by the deadline. Training must take place within 6 months of hire or promotion and every two years thereafter.

Taking these individual-learner courses in a group setting will not satisfy the state requirements.

Stormwater Treatment Plant, Wetlands, and Linear Park Project THE CITY OF AGOURA HILLS HAS BEGUN THE INITIAL STEPS OF PLANNING AND DESIGN FOR A CAPITAL PROJECT THAT SEEKS TO SUPPORT STATE GOALS OF WATER QUALITY, SUSTAINABILITY, AND CLIMATE RESILIENCY. The proposed

project will encompass the construction of an approximately 1.5 acre linear park, a storm water treatment facility, and a native wetlands at the confluence of Medea Creek and Palo Comado Creek in Agoura Hills. This ambitious project was originally pinpointed to address water quality concerns for storm water runoff as it exits Agoura Hills towards the Santa Monica Bay. However, the city then developed the concept of incorporating natural habitat restoration and the creation of recreational park space using the benefits that the treatment facility would provide. The city ultimately found that the synergy between the three projects would 22 | ConejoView

provide the greatest number of benefits to both the community and the surrounding areas.

The city identified the existing Los Angeles County Flood Control Channel as an ideal location to incorporate the linear park because it would reshape the area without the sacrifice of disrupting any additional native landscape. The unique design would feature the park being built over the top of the existing concrete channel, transforming the currently unusable space into a recreational opportunity for the public. The location of the park will be pivotal in revitalizing the use of the area by addressing a critical lack of park space south of the 101 freeway. Further benefits of the park include enhancing regional walking and equestrian trails in Agoura Hills by connecting to the Rim of the Valley Trailhead located east along Agoura Road.

One of the most unique benefits of the park component comes from its close proximity to the Whizin Market Square, one of the largest retail shopping centers in Agoura Hills. The proposed park will

The city believes that the introduction of a new park will bolster the number of visitors to nearby establishments and will breathe new life into the surrounding businesses. City staff are currently working diligently with local business owners to highlight the best possible methods of incorporating the proposed new space into the current identity of the area.

In addition to the park space, the project also plans to revitalize a portion of Medea Creek by installing a wetlands immediately downstream of the proposed treatment facility on the southern edge of the Agoura Hills city limits. This project element’s main goal is to enhance wildlife habitat and increase urban green space in the surrounding area. By naturalizing this area the city also helps to increase the region’s resilience to the evolving problem of climate change.

Native landscaping and habitat significantly reduces the amount of water resources required to maintain recreational infrastructure. Returning this area to its natural state also has water quality benefits by allowing natural infiltration, transpiration, and biological treatment of storm water flows as they continue to filter towards the Santa Monica Bay. “It’s exciting when you get an opportunity to address so many critical needs for the city with one project. When this project is completed, the city will have created something that cleans storm water runoff, is water-conscious and sustainable, provides recreational and educational opportunities for residents of Conejo Valley, is habitat restorative, and in harmony with the surrounding natural environment. At the same time, this park will enhance economic prosperity through partnerships with our local businesses. It will be something truly unique, that we can be proud of as a community,” expressed Agoura Hills Mayor, Linda Northup.

The construction of the storm water treatment facility has been a project that the city has been looking at since 2014 as a solution to addressing a host of water compliance standards and guidelines. Agoura Hills acts as one of the final waypoints for water to be cleaned before it reaches the ocean. The city places great importance on watershed health and the health of the Santa Monica Bay. This project would allow the for the City of Agoura Hills to exceed water quality thresholds while also addressing our local water conservation demands thanks to the unique combination of the park and wetlands. Normally a large concern for the creation of new park space is the added water use, however the treatment facility will bypass this issue by utilizing storage tanks to collect a reservoir of storm water runoff that will be used to irrigate the new park space.

Water that isn’t stored in these tanks will be released back into the natural flow of the creek.

Los Robles Hospital & Medical Center turn the spotlight to Ed Lawrence Extensively known as the unofficial historian of the Conejo Valley, Ed Lawrence’s photographs have documented the history of Newbury Park, Thousand Oaks, and Westlake Village making him a natural artist choice for the hospital’s cafeteria renovation.

Hatch Café & Market features artists Patrick Chapman & Greg Wyszynski Ground-breaking artist Patrick Chapman found his love for art when he was just 13 years old. Inspired by artists Francis Bacon and Jean-Michel Basquiat, each of his paintings feature a narrative hidden between their many tiers. With so many artistic elements, the imagery of Chapman’s art appears differently each time it is viewed.

Coming from the world of television and film, Greg Wyszynski has channeled his eye for detail into the artwork he produces today.

Wyszynski’s creativity and love for color is very prominent in all of his artistic works. While liquid acrylics are his specialty, the established artist applies different pouring mediums to create the finished product.

Wyszynski’s passion and creativity line the walls of his Agoura Hills art studio. As an active member of the local community, Wyszynski not only seeks to bring his vision to life, but the visions of his clients.
