GAINESVILLE
CITY
Gainesville City School System has a rich history and deep tradition which began in 1892 when Gainesville High School was founded. Gainesville City Schools is known for its success in academics, athletics, the arts and its strong relationship with the community.
We exist as ONE Gainesville to inspire, nurture, challenge and prepare our diverse youth. With today’s crowded landscape, an organization’s brand is critical—it drives awareness and recognition and evokes feelings. Gainesville City Schools has a rich history of excellence and a well-known and respected brand. Gainesville officially adopted the Red Elephant as its mascot in the mid 30’s, years after the football team was first referred to as looking like “a herd of Red Elephants.” We are the only high school in the country with the Red Elephant as its mascot. We are the stewards of that brand, and the way that we present Gainesville Red Elephants through visual, digital and written communications helps strengthen our connection with all audiences and promotes our values and vision. Style guides are an important tool and a best practice to ensure that a consistent tone, look and feel are conveyed. The style guide for Gainesville City Schools includes standards for the use of the logo, Gainesville Red and other identifying marks, as well as the expanded visual identity that supports the core brand. It also incorporates examples of good work and recommendations for visual design, photography, videography and writing for the Gainesville brand. This is a living document and will change as our brand evolves. It takes many people to maintain, promote and protect a brand, and everyone associated with the Gainesville City School System has a responsibility to uphold these guidelines. We must all work together to guarantee we present a consistent Gainesville brand image. We encourage and empower you to do this each day by using this guide. Our brand reflects the Gainesville spirit and upholds our longstanding reputation of excellence. It includes such elements as the Classic G and Athletic Elephant. Together as creators and storytellers— and as faculty, staff, students, alumni and community members—we use these tools to strengthen the Gainesville City Schools brand as we share our story.

A sub-brand is more than a logo. It is a complete identity system that fits within the main System brand, but has its own key design elements for a consistent and unique visual style. Any approved System department or extracurricular may create a sub-brand. Effective sub-brands often include elements such as color, patterns, typography and overall aesthetic. Creating a sub-brand is a way to customize communications and marketing efforts for both internal and external audiences, while also leaning on the parent Gainesville City Schools brand for external recognition. Sub-brands can contain some or all of the following elements: A. C lassic G To be used as the primary logo in most communications. B. B lock G Can be used to reference tradition and the classic Letterman’s jacket. Should be accompanied with the Gainesville name when possible. C. G ainesville Elephant Can be used by extracurriculars as a mark to identify your club, team or classroom. D. E lephant Head To be used primarily for social media profile picture but may also be used for extracurricular activities and identity. E. Full Body Elephant The full body elephant is to be used as a mascot emblem to represent spirit and communicate forward motion of the Classic G Elephant. It is not to be used in place of the Classic G as a logo or brand mark. GCSS BR AND GUIDELINES / PAGE 18

E lementary School Logos Each elementary school is represented by the Elementary Elephant with its own unique flag and background. The Elementary School logo is to be used as the primary logo in place of the Classic G for all elementary schools. All other brand elements remain the same including typography and color. TYPOGRAPHY Typefaces help visually transfer our voice when communicating with our audiences. The official Gainesville City Schools typefaces are Georgia Regular and Nimbus Sans Bold. These fonts are licensed and are available as an Adobe font or must be purchased. In the event that a unit does not have access to these fonts or does not want to invest in a license, the recommended substitute font is Arial. Commitment to these typefaces across all mediums will create a consistent and strong identity.
Supplemental Font Brayles is the approved cursive typeface. Brayles is to be used sparingly and as an accent to our official typeface.
