2020 Annual Meeting Visalia Country Club The 2020 Election was held at Visalia Country Club in January. Elected as President of the Central California GCSA is Glenn Matthews, CGCS. Glenn is the Superintendent at Visalia C.C. and the host of our 2020 Annual Election Meeting. Paul Barr from San Luis Obispo C.C. will step up to the VP position and Mark Weitz, Alisal Guest Ranch and Resort will take the position as Secretary/Treasure of the association. Andy Cordova moves to the Past President position. We welcome Candelario Ortega, Rancho Del Rey G.C. to the board. The annual Rounds 4 Research auction is scheduled for April 27-May 3. As in the past, 80% of the funds generated from the auction go back to the chapter in which the rounds were solicited to be used for turfgrass research, education or advocacy purposes. There has been good success selling the rounds in the Southwest Region, but we simply need more courses to donate to the auction. We would like to see our chapter have more of our courses that can donate to do so. This is a perfect opportunity to raise some additional funds for our chapter which will help with bottom-line operations. It takes approximately 10 minutes to fill out the online donation form at https:// www.eifg.org/ research/rounds-4research/donate-around and superintendents can submit their own certificate or GCSAA can make one for
them. You can put restrictions on the rounds including days of the week, times, blackout dates, etc. GCSAA trys to make this as easy as possible on the donating facility. As we move into Spring, this will find many of you with high school seniors getting ready for graduation and thinking about how to finance their college educations. As a reminder, GCSAA offers scholarships for not only students pursuing careers in the golf industry, but for students pursuing other areas of higher education through Legacy Awards sponsored by Syngenta and the Environmental Institute for Golf. The Legacy Awards are open to children and grandchildren of GCSAA members and the scholarships are $1,500 each. Applicants must be enrolled full-time at an accredited institution of higher learning, or for high school seniors, they must have been accepted at such an institution for the
next academic year. The deadline for applications is April 15 and will be reviewed by an independent committee consisting of three high school educators and three college administrators. All decisions of the committee will be final. Applicants will be notified of their status by mail by June 15 of the year submitted. In other news, its time to start getting in your donations for the annual Rounds 4 Research auction. The auction is scheduled for April 27 – May 3. The Rounds 4 Research program was designed to address a critical shortage in turfgrass research and advocacy related issues. Rounds of golf are solicited from local golf facilities for the auction with 80 percent of the funds raised in the auction going back to the participating chapter. The remaining 20 percent goes to the Environmental Institute for Golf (EIFG) to assist with the costs associated with running a national auction of this size. Donating facilities can stipulate times, days of the week, blackout dates, etc. when donating rounds. Donations of rounds can be made online at https://www.eifg.org/research/rounds-4-research/donate-a-round/online-form with the entire process taking approximately 10 minutes. You can send in your own certificate for the auction or the EIFG can create one for you. When Irene called and asked if I would replace Mike Cline as the affiliate member to the chapter board, I thought about it for a minute but of course said yes. This is the first chapter I joined back in 1994 while working for Stover Seed. I’ve enjoyed the friends I’ve made between superintendents and affiliates in the chapter all these years. I could mention some of those people from the early years but so few of you may know of them except for events held in their honor. I played golf with Al Glaze a few different times and enjoyed chatting with Lowell Stone at functions. The history of this chapter is a storied one and remembered fondly by those of us lucky enough to have been members back then.
affiliate spotlight on me. I grew up in Southern California attending a junior high and high school that were leaders in agriculture programs. I competed in Future Farmers of America competitions in ornamental horticulture. I attended Humboldt State University and graduated in 1986 in Botany. I worked for retail nurseries, wholesale suppliers and even Home Depot before joining Stover Seed in 1993. I called on retail nurseries, Home Depots and parks and rec departments before starting the golf course side of business. I worked for Stover until 2016 when I moved on to S&S Seeds. I split from them back in June 2019 and formed my own consulting and supply business for golf courses and municipalities throughout the state.

I’ve been involved with all 6
chapters in California plus the Cactus and Pine in Arizona and Southern Nevada chapter in Las Vegas. I’ve been the Southern affiliate member to the California GCSA Board since 2011 and have just finished my second term on the GCSAA BMP Resource Task Group. I’ve always believed you get out of work what you put into it. Serving the GCSAA on many levels using my expertise provides me with a high level of satisfaction. It’s something I see from all of you. You go above and beyond to provide golf courses that benefit many and we affiliates look forward to helping you create those works of art. I look forward to serving the Central chapter in it’s endeavors this year and for as long as they’ll me.
