F ORE Y OUR I NFORMATION

4th Quarter 2022

Cameron Park Country Club 2022 Scholarship & Research Tournament Empire Ranch Golf Club– Folsom, CA.

Thank you to all of my fellow association members for electing me to my second term as your SNGCSA President. While I may have landed in this position a bit by default, I by no means take for granted the responsibility bestowed upon me and pledge to do my best to continue to improve and further the goals of our association.

Along those lines, there’s nothing like the start of a New Year to assess, evaluate and plan goals for the upcoming year. So let me share with all of you some of my goals for myself, our association, and our local professional community.

First, I’ve always found the greatest value and strength of our association to be in our community, our shared experiences, and our ability to share those with each other. No where is this more present and rewarding than in the environment created by our (nearly) monthly meetings. As such, I encourage you all to commit to attending at least TWO meetings, so you can realize the true value of your membership in exchanging thoughts, stories, ideas and advice with your fellow peers. There’s nothing more valuable you’ll get from our association than the networking and friendships you create, but you have to be there for those opportunities to come to fruition.

Second, in order to support the first goal above, I am setting a goal to improve our meetings and meeting planning. I want all of you to know when the meetings are happening, what valuable and educational topics will be discussed there, and what worthwhile facility we’ll be visiting

for you to see and share in the accomplishments of our local superintendents. This will take diligent planning and execution on behalf of our board who puts these meetings together, but I know we can do it! If you’d like to host a meeting or have a topic you’d like to see covered, please let us know!

Lastly, I personally want to encourage you all to find a way to get just a bit more involved. Not only in our local association…helping out a committee, running for the board next year, getting involved with opportunities on the state and national level…all are great ways to do this, but also to just try to include thoughts of how we can better work together to achieve our mutual professional goals by better supporting each other. By simply donating a foursome during the Rounds 4 Research drive you can help the national as well as our local association immensely. Attending the Scholarship, Research & Advocacy event, or even just donating to that as well, helps raise funds that we utilize on your behalf to promote our profession with today’s youth, get you valuable feedback on pressing topics through local research and advocate at the state level to keep legislation harmful to our efforts at bay.

Our strength is in our numbers and our cumulative expertise. So our mutual goal should be to come together as often as possible to better benefit you, me and all our association members. Together we can become better and more successful as we all prepare to battle another year of whatever gets thrown at us. See you at the next meeting!

BEST MANAGEMENT PRACTICES

A guide for environmental stewardship

We will be hosting a BMP push at this years Turf Tech Event on January 3 at The Ridge. Take advantage of the resources we are here to offer.

Golf Course best management practices (BMPs) offer guidelines for superintendents to manage their facilities in an efficient and environmentally sustainable manner. BMP manuals document all of the science-based practices and professional course management that many people need to see. While superintendents spearhead BMP efforts, the use of BMPs benefit everyone in the community that a golf course serves.

GCSAA has granted the Sierra Nevada GCSA funds to help facilitate the development of BMP’s for our members. You can reach out to the association office for information and details and we will put a representative in touch with you to help you with the process.

Don’t wait. Do it now. There is a limited amount of funds available for this program so get your request in early .

V ENDOR PROFILE

C HAD M ORRIS S ITE O NE

L ANDSCAPE S UPPLY

I have never thought of myself as a “sales guy.” I have always been proud to call myself a Golf Course Superintendent, which I was for 20 years up until January 2021. It was timing that led me to take a new position as Golf Course Sales Manager for SiteOne Landscape Supply. I was moving from Southern California to join my future and present wife, Trang, where she lives in Sacramento. SiteOne was building a new agronomy team in California and looking for a golf course sales representative. I thought this could be an opportunity to work in the golf course industry while not being “married” to a golf course. Although the primary reason for taking the job was an opportunity to help Superintendents knowing firsthand how challenging the job is. I thought, “If I could get something as small as a repair coupling to a Superintendent on a Friday so he could enjoy the weekend without thinking about the isolation valves he had on, well that’s pretty cool in my book!”

Just some quick background stats on me, I grew up in Portland, Oregon, went to Oregon State University and got my degree in Turfgrass Management in 1996. I got my first Superintendent job at the Running Y Resort GC in Klamath Falls, Oregon in 1999. I was laid off during the recession in 2008 and got an assistant Superintendent position at PGA West. I was in the desert for just over 2 years before I took a job with American Golf at Oakhurst Country Club in the East Bay. After almost 4 years at Oakhurst as the assistant, American Golf sent me down to Southern California to be Superintendent at Mission Trails and Knollwood Country Club. During my free time I am either on my road bike, golfing or drinking wine with my wife.

In my short time in the area, I have really enjoyed meeting the Superintendents that make up the Sierra Nevada chapter. It is great to see the comradery, willingness to share experiences and best practices. It is a consistent theme in our industry and no stronger than this chapter. Thank you to the Superintendents I have already met, and I look forward to meeting the rest of you very soon.

FROM THE FIELD

Happy Holidays to all of our Sierra Nevada GCSA members! I hope you have some free time to enjoy the festivities with family and friends before we launch into what promises to be a busy year.

As we move into 2023, now is the time to consider donating to Rounds4Research. The 2023 auction is scheduled for April 24 – May 30. We are now accepting donations for rounds of golf (twosomes or foursomes) that will be auctioned off nationally through the BiddingForGood website. 80 percent of the funds raised from the donated rounds will go back to the chapter in which the round was solicited. The proceeds can then be used by the chapters to fund specific projects including research, education, and advocacy. As we all know, the research efforts at UC Riverside as well as the advocacy efforts of the California Alliance for Golf (CAG) are vastly underfunded and Rounds4Research is a way that our local GCSAA chapters can assist in supporting these endeavors.

Facilities can donate online at https://www.gcsaa.org/foundation/rounds-4-research/r4r-online- donationform and the entire process takes approximately 10 minutes. Facilities can also indicate restrictions including blackouts on times of the year or days of the week. If you are a private facility that is unable to donate a round, we also accept monetary donations for the program at https://gcsaa-foundation.snwbll.com/r4r-donor-form.

If you have any questions concerning Rounds4Research, please don’t hesitate to contact me or Katie Lomshek at klomshek@gcsaa.org or 800-472-7878.

In other news, the California Legislature reconvenes on Jan. 4, 2023. The last day for bills to be introduced is Feb. 17. In addition to the outreach efforts of CAG and particularly the Southern California Golf Association (SCGA), GCSAA Government Relations Manager Michael Lee and I will be making some visits to various legislators and state departments in Sacramento this winter in an effort to better serve the golf industry in California, particularly in regard to pesticide regulation.

Our various allied golf associations in California have a terrific relationship and we work closely together to serve all of the interests of our golf community both locally and at the state level. While all involved will admit we have a long way to go, we are looked at by the golf industry as a model for government relations activities, something that we can all be proud of.

Thank you for your support in 2022 and we look forward to a successful and prosperous 2023. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me at jjensen@gcsaa.org and follow me on Twitter @GCSAA_SW for industry updates. Happy Holidays!!

Amended SORE Emission Standards

January 1, 2024

On December 9, 2021, the California Air Resource Board (CARB) approved a measure on Small OffRoad Engines (SORE). SORE are spark-ignition engines rated at or below 19 kilowatts (25 horsepower). The amended regulation will set SORE emission standards to zero in two phases: • First, for model year (MY) 2024 and all subsequent model years, emission standards will be zero. These emission standards of zero will apply to engines used in all equipment types produced for sale in California, except generators and large pressure washers. Emission standards for generators and large pressure washers will be more stringent than the existing standards by 40-90 percent starting in MY 2024, but not zero. • The second phase will be implemented starting in MY 2028, when the emission standards for generators and large pressure washers will be zero. The amended regulations apply to the manufacture and sale of new equipment only (defined as equipment that uses a small off-road engine manufactured for sale, sold, or offered for sale in California, or that is introduced, delivered, or imported into California for introduction into commerce). This includes leased equipment. Golf Courses can continue to operate their current CARB-compliant gasoline-powered SORE equipment; there will be no “ban” on using older models or used equipment purchased in the future. Older models can also be purchased from manufacturers or store shelves even if they are gasoline-powered. Engines that use diesel fuel are not subject to the regulations. Local air districts may have rebate programs available for transition to zero emission equipment and they will establish their own guidelines for such programs

MUHAMMADALI

Muhammad Ali: Life Long learning… And Teaching!

Pakistan native Muhammad Ali’s steady climb from crew member to Superintendent is a testament to hard work, a hunger for knowledge and a passion for maintaining golf courses.

Ali’s story is more like an all-American dream. What he has accomplished brings new meaning to “rise and shine,” as he has made the steady climb from that crew member position (night waterman) working for Sam Samuelson at Haggin Oaks to a GCSAA Class A superintendent in a role that has him overseeing 54 holes. Four years ago, Ali was named Superintendent at the 27-hole Bing Maloney Golf Complex, operated by Morton Golf for the city of Sacramento. Last year, he added another municipal facility, Bartley Cavanaugh Golf Course, then Land Park Golf Course to his collection of duties. He spends time every day at each facility, and unlike the momentous time he first arrived in America, the five-year GCSAA member no longer has to wonder what each day will bring.

Ali hasn’t limited his efforts to just the maintenance of the golf courses under his watch. He has embraced GCSAA’s First Green program. He has hosted local students on the Golf Course sharing the environmental and wildlife benefits provided while also teaching some basic Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. Ali is committed to sharing his knowledge with the younger generation and his staff. Ali received the Sierra Nevada GCSA’s President’s Grassroots Award in 2019. “I want my crew to grow along with me and succeed. If I’m not going to help my crew, they’re not going to help me. Let’s succeed together.”

On the day we spoke, Ali had just returned from a week in North Carolina participating in a Vendor sponsored educational event. Ali has obviously taken advantage of educational opportunities. He went to night school to learn English, which is good, because the first few words he picked up were, well ... “They were bad words,” Ali says with a laugh. Like many in our industry he hasn’t much time to play golf but is committed at the local and national levels to educate the public to the benefits of golf. I really enjoyed my visit with Ali. His energy and positive attitude are contagious, and I am looking forward to participating in future events he has planned.
