F ORE Y OUR I NFORMATION

2nd Quarter 2023 Cameron Park Country Club 2022 Scholarship & Research Tournament Spring Creek Golf Course– Ripon CA.

I know we all just suffered through our first heat spell of the summer but aren’t we all just thankful this has only been the first one so far this year?! There’s no escaping the “90 days of hell” from mid-June to mid-Sept in our Sierra Nevada region (except for maybe you Tahoe/ mountain superintendents!), but it’s certainly nice to get a milder year after so many battles with drought and heat extremes in years past. Enjoy it while you can!

It's also one of the best times of the year for our association as we are putting the finishing touches on our annual Scholarship & Research fundraising event coming up on July 24th. Mike Stieler and his team promise to roll out the GREEN carpet for us at Spring Creek CC and I’m looking forward to seeing the course, post major renovation, as I hear it’s fantastic. I hope you will join us there as well, and make sure you check out the many great items and deals we have up for auction thanks to our many generous affiliate sponsors! As someone who received a scholastic scholarship from this association way back in the early 2000s when I was attending college myself, I can attest that this event and the funds it generates to support our future turf managers, the children of our current members and the annual research that provides insight into the toughest issues we’re trying to tackle has truly been an influential gamechanger for decades now. We all appreciate your continued support and hope you realize how important each and every member’s at-

tendance at this meeting is! So if you haven’t done so yet, go online or call Kim to register and put it on your calendar now!

Speaking of our youth and future turf managers, I also want to plug what I believe is a very special and important program to our industry: the First Green initiative (https://www.thefirstgreen.org ). If you haven’t put on, participated in, or even looked into what these events are about, it’s really time to give it a thought. While the initial preparation for the meeting (finding a school or educational organization to connect with, and finding others to help you put on the event) may feel a bit daunting, GCSAA as well as several members locally within our association are more than happy to help and provide support. What’s more is our association has also recently been awarded a grant from the GCSA, that would help to supply certain materials and/or “swag” for attendees of your event, making it that much easier and enticing to get involved. The more we can expose and educate our youth both on what we do and how rewarding our industry can be as a potential career, the more we ensure the future of our courses, clubs, and the overall game of golf. Please contact Kim at the association office, or Jeff Jensen with GCSAA, to help get guidance and access to this support and funding!

Best of luck to you all for the rest of the summer and I look forward to seeing you at Spring Creek!

2023 Scholarship & Research Tournament

Spring Creek Golf & CC July 24, 2023

Dear Members,

Before we know it will be time for the chapter’s Research and Scholarship Tournament. This year’s tournament is scheduled on July 24, 2023 at Spring Creek Golf and Country Club. We thank Mike Stieler CGCSA, our host superintendent for offering us his fine facility for this special event. Last year Mike completed the remodel of all the green complexes.

Once again Syngenta and Joe Ballmer purchased the tee prizes. We would like to thank all the golf industry suppliers who in the past had equipment displays, donated items for the auction, sponsored meals and for those who sponsored tee signs and games on the course. Superintendents, we also want to thank you for attending, bringing guests, and bringing some great prizes for the raffle. Soon the SNGCSA Board of Directors will be asking for donations for this year’s event.

The money raised from this tournament goes to Scholarships,Turfgrass Research,PersonalandProfessionalDevelopmentProgram, andourBenevolenceFund.

Over the last ten years the money raised from this event is approaching $300,000. We could not have done this without everyone’s participation.

Thank you,

DARK HORSE MAY MEETING

We want to formally “Thank” Dark Horse, and host Superintendent Ryan Yost. While the weather wasn't incredibly cooperative, we had a good turn out as the weather cleared. Those who braved the cold had a great day. Dean Kinney, with Sierra Pacific Turf Supply, manned the BBQ and turned out a yummy spread for everyone in attendance. Thank you to Dean. We look forward to another great year of events, and seeing all of these Happy faces at each one of them.

“Short Right”

This will be a quick column for this quarters report. Not much movement as everyone hunkers down to survive the heat. A few things worth noting are:

Tristan Martins has been recently named the new Golf Course Superintendent at Rolling Hills Casino in Corning. He was previously the assistant there.

Steve Kimbrough at Sun City Roseville just completed a practice range facility project. They installed new a irrigation system on their driving range, increased the size of their practice putting green, and redid the chipping area with the new capillary bunker. Its all looking great and if you get the opportunity to head out there to take a look, it is worth the drive.

Frontier Golf is finishing up the new irrigation system project at Serrano

FROM THE FIELD

I hope this finds all of our Sierra Nevada GCSA members doing well and getting ready for what promises to be a busy summer of golf!

The California Legislature is still in session, and we are tracking numerous bills that could have an affect on the golf industry.

AB 363 would require the California DPR, by July 1, 2024, to publish a reevaluation of the latest science regarding the impacts of neonicotinoid pesticides, as defined, on pollinating insects, aquatic ecosystems, and human health when used for the nonagricultural protection of outdoor ornamental plants, trees, and turf, and, by July 1, 2026, to adopt regulations governing that use that are necessary to protect the health of honeybees, native bees, and other pollinating insects, aquatic ecosystems, and human health.

While the California golf industry doesn’t oppose the reevaluation, we do oppose the change to the assessment protocol as well as the potential influence, interference, and timeline of the legislature on the outcome of the reevaluation. It is not the place of legislature to circumvent the established regulatory process. Comments have been filed requesting that the bill be based on a risk assessment without undue outside interference from legislature. While the drought issues have certainly eased for the upcoming summer season, water is always at the forefront of our legislative efforts. AB 460 and accompanying SB 389 would create new administrative enforcement processes that would allow the State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB) to make binding determinations on water rights. Significantly, AB 460 in particular would grant interested parties the right to file petitions for the SWRCB to impose restrictions on water rights that could significantly limit or eliminate a diverter’s ability to exercise those rights. Collectively, both bills would undermine existing legal protections for pre-1914 and riparian water rights and result in significant changes to how California’s water rights system is administered.

Golf doesn’t have many pre-1914 water rights in the state, but we do have numerous courses that have riparian rights, and this is a bill we will be following closely. More information as well as action alerts (where warranted) will be forthcoming as the bills stall or advance through committee. For more information & updates visit https://www.gcsaa.org/advocacy/take-action.

Thank you for your continued support of GCSAA and if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me at jjensen@gcsaa.org and follow me on Twitter @GCSAA_SW for industry updates. Best of luck with your summer golf season!

GCSAA continues work in opposition to California Air Resources Board (CARB) Small Off-Road Engine regulations (SORE regulations)

Regulations would ban the manufacture and sale of new 25hp and under gasoline powered equipment starting Jan. 1, 2024

GCSAA submitted comments and participated in a virtual hearing with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on June 27 concerning the waiver approval from the EPA that would be required for the California Air Resource Board (CARB) to implement the Small OffRoad Engine regulations (SORE) on Jan. 1, 2024. The regulation would ban the manufacture and sale of new 25hp and under gasoline powered equipment starting Jan. 1, 2024. The regulation is not a ban on use.

The California golf industry is an end user of many products that will be affected by the proposedamendments to CARB’s SORE regulations and the accompanying waiver approval from the EPA. Some of the products used on golf courses that may be impacted include, but are not limited to, chainsaws (<45cc), handheld grass and hedge trimmers, handheld and backpack leaf blowers, handheld pole pruners, handheld and ground supported edger’s, walk behind and riding greens mowers, select fairway mowers, hover mowers, verti-cutting and aerator units, snow blowers, trenchers, and at a later date, pressure washers and generators.

GCSAA continues work in opposition to California Air Resources Board (CARB) Small Off-Road Engine regulations (SORE regulations)

GCSAA and the California Alliance for Golf have been working in opposition to AB 1346 (Legislation

introducing the ban) and the rulemaking process for the past 30 months requesting that CARB work with manufacturers, green associations, and retailers to maintain the 2024 end of sale date for zero emission residential Small Off-Road Engines (SORE) but consider extending the time period to transition to zero emission “commercial/professional grade” equipment beyond 2024 to the degree to which fears about the commercial unavailability of equipment fit for intended use were borne out.

GCSAA is asking for our members’ help as well. The EPA has a public comment period open through July 28 concerning the waiver approval. Members can access the alert at:

https://www.gcsaa.org/advocacy/take-action beginning July 13. Just enter your contact information and a short comment on how the rule will affect your operation, click Send Message and the message will be sent to the EPA.

We appreciate your continued support of GCSAA and the golf industry.

If you have any questions concerning the EPA waiver process, please feel free to contact GCSAA Southwest Field Representative Jeff Jensen at jjensen@gcsaa.org or GCSAA Senior Manager of Government Affairs Michael Lee at mlee@gcsaa.org.

I would like to start off this article with a Big Thank you to Mike Stieler for hosting this year’s Scholarship and Research Tournament. For those of you who have hosted an event for your peers, you know what I’m talking about (in the Central Valley, in July). We appreciate you Mike!

We all know about Mikes Golfing Skills, his competitive edge and never-ending energy. He is also a student of the History of Golf Course Design and Architecture. With that said, Mike has been under construction/projects/improvements non-stop for the past 5 years. Greens, Bunkers, Irrigation and Landscape projects, most all of which were done in house. Next on the list are some upgrades to the Maintenance Facility. That’s the energy I spoke of earlier. Pro Tip from Mike: When the Ladies at the Club hate you for “tearing up their golf course”, get a dog! Suzie Q, a Border Collie, has become a trusted friend and ally for the Maintenance Team at Spring Creek. Spring Creek CC opened in 1964 as a 9-hole Jack Fleming designed golf course. The back nine, Lee Weintz designed, was finished in 1972.As you play the golf course, keep this in mind. Mike has gone to great lengths to keep some of their influences as he over saw rebuilding of the Greens Complexes. You will also see/feel the influences ofAlister MacKenzie on the Front 9 and Don Ross on the Back 9 as you choose your approach shot into each green.

I asked Mike what his favorite course and toughest course was that he had ever played?? Without hesitation he said, “Spyglass in Tournament Condition covered both questions.”

When Mike has some “free time” he and his wife Heather love spending time with their adult children and the Grandkids! Mike also spends some time on his bicycle. “Great exercise and easy on the knees”.

Mike also loves to talk about golf and agronomy. I encourage you to approach Mike if you’re planning any scale of rebuild or improvement. He has a wealth of knowledge and experience and is willing to share the how to’s and how not to’s.

Thank you Mike and the Crew for sharing Spring Creek Country Club!

K EVIN R OURKE S IERRA P ACIFIC T URF S UPPLY

I have the pleasure of introducing Kevin Rourke, an exceptional individual who has combined his love for golf with a successful career in sales. Kevin's journey is filled with determination, fortuitous encounters, and a genuine passion for his work.

Born in Los Gatos, CA and raised in Campbell, CA, Kevin's early years were filled with the warmth of the Bay Area. The connections he formed during his upbringing remain strong to this day, highlighting the lasting impact of the friendships he nurtured.

Kevin's thirst for knowledge and entrepreneurial spirit led him to pursue a Business degree in Entrepreneurship at San Jose State University. What sets Kevin's educational journey apart is the unique experience he gained by simultaneously working at Sierra Pacific Turf Supply. Balancing night and online classes, he dedicated his days to honing his skills in the business world. Working closely with the Sierra Pacific team allowed Kevin to apply the concepts he learned in the classroom to realworld situations, fostering a deeper understanding of the industry.

However, Kevin's connection with Sierra Pacific Turf Supply dates back even further. In a tale of serendipity, Kevin's path intertwined with Becky Naumann, the Vice President of Sierra Pacific Turf Supply. During his time working at a downtown Campbell Starbucks, Kevin struck up conversations with Becky, who would frequent the coffee shop every day. Their shared passion for golf sparked conversations that ultimately led to Kevin being offered a position at Sierra Pacific as a receptionist a testament to the power of networking and seizing opportunities.

Kevin's journey within Sierra Pacific Turf Supply is nothing short of inspiring. From receptionist to Golf Accessory Assistant, he worked closely with Ryan Johnson and managed the Golf Accessory warehouse in Campbell. Through dedication and hard work, he climbed the ranks, transitioning to inside sales, where he learned about the agronomic side of the business under the guidance of Al Schlothauer. In 2019, Kevin's dedication and expertise were recognized, and he was promoted to Branch Manager in Rocklin, working closely with Dean Kinney. Finally, in 2022, he took on the role of Rain Bird/Golf Accessory Sales Representative for Sierra Pacific a testament to his resilience and passion for growth.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Kevin's personal life is filled with love and joy. He is married to his incredible wife, Bridget, whom he has known since 2010. Bridget, an Art Director at the start-up company City Cheers, has the flexibility of working from home, which became even more meaningful last October when they welcomed their daughter, Penelope, into the world. While navigating the adventure of parenthood, Kevin cherishes the time he can dedicate to his favorite hobby golf. Although balancing fatherhood and personal interests can be challenging, Kevin's passion for the sport remains unwavering, and his role at Sierra Pacific allows him to encounter golf courses every day, fueling his love for the game.

When asked about his current role, Kevin radiates enthusiasm. The aspect he appreciates the most is the opportunity to meet new people, learn from their stories, and provide solutions to their needs. The support and camaraderie within the industry have not only helped him grow professionally but have also offered invaluable advice on fatherhood.

For Kevin, driving around the area, seeing diverse golf courses, and solving problems for golf course Supers brings immense joy and a sense of fulfillment. His genuine love for his work shines through, making each day an exciting and fulfilling adventure.

In conclusion, Kevin Rourke's story embodies the power of passion, perseverance, and seizing opportunities. From his humble beginnings to his current role as a Rain Bird/Golf Accessory Sales Representative, Kevin's journey inspires us to pursue our passions, embrace networking opportunities, and never stop learning. We extend our warmest wishes to Kevin, Bridget, and Penelope as they continue to create memories and navigate life's adventures.
