ASSETS UNDER MANAGEMENT At the end of 2013, the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation held more than $140 million in assets under management in 714 charitable funds. These dollars will help to improve the overall quality of life in our communities.

ENDOW IOWA The Endow Iowa Tax Credit Program makes it easy to support the good work being done by nonprofit organizations by allowing you to receive an Iowa state income tax credit equal to 25 percent of the value of your endowed gift. These gifts are not eligible for a state income tax deduction, although they do qualify for the federal charitable deduction. With Endow Iowa, contributions to the Community Foundation cost donors less. For example, a $10,000 gift could cost a donor in the 34% tax bracket just $4,100.

COUPLE’S GIVING IS

SIMPLIFIED THANKS TO

COMMUNITY FOUNDATION

As a couple, Myron and Esther Wilson have been community supporters for many years.  The Wilsons made their first gift to the Community Foundation back in 1992. “The Community Foundation is a good solid organization that is really helping the community,” said Esther of their reason for giving through the Community Foundation.  The couple recommended their first grant from their Community Foundation funds in 1994. Since then, they have contributed more than $300,000 through nearly 200 grants to a wide variety of nonprofit organizations.  Their giving supports organizations across the 14

philanthropic spectrum—from human services to arts and culture. They have supported Honor Flights for veterans to Washington D.C. and they have supported Orchestra Iowa and the Cedar Rapids Opera Theatre. They are supporters of Iowa Public Television and Iowa Public Radio, as well as the Linn County Trails Association, the Wheelchair Ramp Accessibility Program, Boys and Girls Club, and the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library Association, among many others. They have long been supporters of Indian Creek Nature Center, most recently supporting their Amazing Space campaign for a new nature center building.

The Wilsons said they appreciate that the Community Foundation helps them identify organizations in need of support. “It’s a big relief for us, having a convenient way to find out where organizations have a need,” said Myron.  “And there is always someone there to help answer a question,” he added. “I like that I can go online anytime to check on funds.”  Myron and Esther Wilson have continued to give—with gifts of stock, IRA rollovers and cash—over the years to donor-advised funds to benefit the community. In recent years, they have appreciated the opportunity to take advantage of Endow Iowa tax credits as well, Esther said.

“Thinking back, the Community Foundation has really grown,” said Myron. “They handle so many funds and have an excellent reputation in the community.”  The Wilsons have felt their connection to the community grow as well. “We say it all the time,” Myron added, “that we believe the more you give the more you get back emotionally and monetarily, and that has certainly been true for us.”

MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP HONORS

LEGACY

OF KENNEDY HIGH SCHOOL GOLFER

Drew Wall was the kind of kid you don’t easily forget.  He was a straight A high school student and an accomplished golfer. “His pride and joy was being on the Kennedy golf team,” said his dad, Doug Wall. “There was nothing more rewarding to him.”  Drew’s academic and athletic accomplishments are even more impressive considering the fact that he’d also been battling bone cancer since the age of 11.  “He never let that define him though,” said his mom Robin Wall. She said Drew chose to have his leg amputated early on and spent more than 200 nights in the hospital during his treatment. Despite health challenges, Drew 16

always kept his spirits high and maintained a positive outlook on life. He became a public speaker, advocate and fundraiser for children battling cancer. “Drew taught everyone that life takes all kinds of twists and turns,” said Robin. “People were enthralled with his spirit.”  Drew’s golf teammates and coach were some of his biggest fans. Coach Mark Wilden and his teammates created “Just Drew It” t-shirts as a way to recognize Drew and show how much they cared. They began selling them to supporters and were amazed at the response. “It was unbelievable,” said Wilden. “Everyone climbed on board. It was touching to see how classmates and community

members reacted to support Drew and his family.”  “This still makes us feel so blessed,” said Robin of seeing the purple t-shirts when she’s out and about. “I see the t-shirts all over the place and I tell the people wearing them I’m Drew’s mom.”  Sadly, Drew passed away at the age of 16. But his spirit and memory continue to live on through those that knew him, as well as through a scholarship fund administered by the Community Foundation.  “It was a no brainer for us to give back,” said Robin, noting that the community —including those at Madison Elementary, Taft Middle School and Kennedy High School

—has always been so supportive of their family. “This is something Drew would be really proud of.”  His dad agreed, noting that the scholarship is awarded to a member of the Kennedy golf team each year who embodies all Drew lived for. “It’s really cool to have a chance to pass that on. The Community Foundation made it so easy to give back to a community that has been so supportive during our whole journey.” Pictured from left to right: Coach Mark Wilden, Doug Wall, Robin Wall and Adam Wall 17

Frontier Co-op is the type of company that believes in social responsibility.  “Social giving is a major component of Frontier Co-op’s unique cooperative business model,” said Tony Bedard, CEO. “We believe that being a co-op obligates us to leverage our success in support of our members’ ideals— recognizing that our success is due in part to the fact that we so closely share those ideals. Our participation in all the communities affected by our co-op, from the smallest local opportunity to the world community, is a core value that drives our actions.”  The Frontier Co-op Foundation fund was established at the Community Foundation in 2000 as a philanthropic vehicle to support social, educational, and environmental 18

causes. In 14 years, through the Community Foundation, Frontier has made more than 110 grants totaling more than $500,000 to a variety of nonprofit organizations. Additional gifts from the organization’s own charitable funds total nearly one million dollars, increasing their philanthropic impact.  “Frontier is an international company with a strong commitment to community,” said Karla Twedt-Ball, Senior Vice President at the Community Foundation. “We are pleased to be their philanthropic partner to support local initiatives, as well as help facilitate their national strategy to support work that aligns with their core values.”  As holders of donor-advised funds, Frontier is equally proud to partner with the Community Foundation to

FRONTIER CO-OP G I V E S N E A R A N D FA R

facilitate their grantmaking process.  “The Community Foundation is a great help to us to efficiently manage our grant request process,” said Bedard. “Working with them gives us the confidence to know that our funds will be managed and distributed to qualifying nonprofit organizations throughout the communities in which we work.”  “We have a social spending objective to support causes that are in alignment with our mission and values,” said Bedard. “And so our giving strategy concentrates on supporting organic research education and grower development. As a leading supplier of organic herbs and spices, we hold a leadership position, not only in the marketplace, but also in the effort to convert

food producers to sustainable farming and production practices. Our work is driven by the belief that fostering environmental responsibility is crucial to our world’s future.”   Frontier also believes in supporting the communities where their employees live and championing their own charitable work. This has led to supporting many local organizations. “Our employees are a critical part of our community giving,” added Bedard. “They not only champion local causes but they also combine their own time and resources with Frontier’s to support a wide array of worthy causes.”

MANY HANDS MAKE LIGHT WORK FOR

TREES FOREVER  Since 1989, Trees Forever has been planting and caring for trees and the environment and building community in and around Iowa and Illinois. In their 25-year history, Trees Forever has planted more than 49,000 trees and seedlings in Cedar Rapids and other Linn County communities alone.  Grants in the past from the Community Foundation have assisted Trees Forever in a number of ways. They have received organizational development funds to upgrade the Trees Forever website. They also maintain several funds, including memorial and endowment funds at the Community Foundation.  Recently, a grant from the Program Fund at the Community Foundation, along with support from the 24

Diamond V Donor-Advised Fund, has supported Trees Forever’s TreeKeepers program. “The TreeKeepers program is a training and volunteer engagement effort that empowers volunteers to help plant and care for young trees and woodlands in Linn County communities,” said Trees Forever Founder and President Shannon Ramsay.  “We believe in the idea that ‘many hands make light work’ and with TreeKeepers we know that each year, more and more trees and woodlands will be cared for, maintained, and planted.”  Trees Forever TreeKeepers are trained in tree identification, tree planting, care of young trees, and woodland invasive species identification and management.

TreeKeeper graduates are expected to volunteer at least ten hours of service in the Linn County area to plant and care for trees and woodlands.  Todd Fagan, Cedar Rapids City Arborist, who is among the teachers for the TreeKeepers classes, said, “It’s great to have volunteers to help with pruning, mulching and assisting in multiple ways with our public trees – whether in parks, along streets, or with public buildings. We appreciate the help.”  According to Ramsay, the program has been very successful thus far. “We have trained 88 people in the Corridor since it was launched just two and a half years ago.”

Community Foundation Program Officer Elizabeth Cwik said it’s exciting to be a supporter of such environmental efforts that impact the greater community. “A vibrant community results in large part from the strength of its civic, cultural and environmental amenities,” she said. “The Foundation combines funds designated for environmental efforts with funds held in the general endowment to enhance the rich natural assets that we all may benefit and learn from.”

25

In 2009, the Ceramics Center was just getting started. Now, six years later, the organization is thriving and continues to spread its wings in offering innovative artistic experiences in ceramics and glass to many in our community.  Over the years, as the organization has grown, the Ceramics Center has relied on the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation for grant support in a variety of ways.  For a number of years, the Community Foundation’s Program Fund has supported summer camp opportunities for at-risk youth. In 2013, the Ceramics Center was able to secure multi-year funding for the successful program in partnership with Four Oaks. 26

“We always try to be cognizant of not duplicating programs,” said Ceramics Center Executive Director Ben Jensen. “This is truly a unique opportunity for these kids.”  Within the last year, the program has expanded to reach even more at-risk youth through additional partnerships with Foundation 2, the Cedar Rapids and Iowa City Detention Centers and Unity Point Children’s Health Special Services. “We like running the program, and our partner organizations like working with us. We all see it as beneficial,” said Jensen.  The Ceramics Center also recently received donoradvised funding through the Bloomhall Family Fund to help support their Mobile Clay Lab—basically a pottery studio

CERAMICS CENTER SERVES AT-RISK YOUTH

on wheels—that they can take to various places in the community, such as senior centers, preschools and other nonprofit organizations like the Abbe Center and the ARC to share clay programs.  Jensen said the Ceramics Center appreciates the connections they are able to make at the Community Foundation. “They are local people who understand the needs of the greater Cedar Rapids area. And they want the best for our organization.” He has enjoyed working with staff members over the years. “As the relationship builds and grows it becomes more of a partnership,” Jensen said.  While programming grants have been a strong focus at the Ceramics Center, their history of receiving support

spans the funding opportunities available through the Community Foundation. From capacity grant funding for database development and expansion to flood recovery grant dollars made when the center was starting, the Community Foundation has been with the Ceramics Center every step of the way.  “I don’t think the Ceramics Center would be where we are today without the support of the Community Foundation,” Jensen said. “Their support has allowed those areas (which were funded) to grow and has freed up resources for other areas of growth.”

27

The dedicated staff at Abbe Center for Community Mental Health works to improve lives in the community through advocacy, support and the integration of mental health and wellness services. The organization provides mental health treatment services as well as integrated healthcare coordination for thousands of Linn, Benton, Jones, Buchanan, Delaware and Fayette County residents.  Over the years, Abbe Center has turned to the Community Foundation in a variety of ways for support of the organizational mission.  “The Community Foundation has been a strong supporter of mental healthcare services in the community, at both the individual level and the community needs 28

level,” said Cindy Kaestner, Abbe Center VP/Executive Director. “The Community Foundation understands that healthy and vibrant communities include support for diverse needs in the health and human service environments. And we have been able to provide community outreach services and individual treatment services through multiple (Community Foundation) funding opportunities.”  In recent years, Abbe Center has faced cutbacks in government funding while the need for its services in the community remain critical. The organization was able to turn to the Community Foundation for support in the changing funding environment.

ABBE CENTER REDUCES PATIENT WAITING THROUGH

NEW SCHEDULING MODEL  “In recent years we have experienced funding cuts that would have resulted in the discontinuation of needed services to individuals in our community,” Kaestner said. “During that time, a President’s Fund grant from the Community Foundation helped fill a gap that kept services available without interruption.”  In 2013, Abbe Center also received an organizational development grant from the Community Foundation to help increase its capacity to provide same day mental health treatment to clients. The vision was to become “right service at the right time”. In order to achieve this goal, staff members at Abbe Center underwent a training process to develop the service scheduling model so

individuals would not have to wait long to receive care.  Abbe Center made huge strides in achieving this goal just three months after training and implementation. The organization reduced the waiting period for patients in need of psychiatric evaluation from 90 days between initial request and evaluation to just five to ten days.  Kaestner and her staff are grateful for continued support from the Community Foundation in helping to achieve its mission. “When individuals are able to live successfully in our community, that leads to a healthier outcome for both the individual and the community.”

COLLABORATIONS COMMUNITY ALLIANCE INITIATIVE Founded in 2011 as the Community Development Grant Program, the Community Alliance Initiative (CAI) continues to be a unique partnership among the City of Cedar Rapids, Linn County, and the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation. The CAI promotes and facilitates sustainable, cross-sector collaborations that unite funders, nonprofits, governments and the business community to achieve cohesive, transformative impact to support community priorities. The Initiative continues to highlight the importance of strong alliances across sectors. In 2013, the CAI was boosted when the program prepared an application for the Robert Wood Johnson Program and five community leaders (including the CAI Program Director) were presented leadership development scholarships to the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Boundary Spanning Leadership Program. The CAI has integrated the resulting tools with the intent of replicating synergistic practices across the community. Since its inception, CAI’s collective efforts have yielded participation in 59 projects that have engaged over 150 community, regional and national partners. The projects have resulted in 32 proposal submissions that have successfully facilitated over $6.7 million in funding. For more information about CAI, contact Tracy Tritle, CAI Program Director at 319.774.2376 or tracy.tritle@gcrcf.org.
