Artistic Director’s Note Welcome to our 2020-2021 Season! To be honest, about 6 months ago, I didn’t think I would be able to say those words! What a year 2020 has been, and we couldn’t be more grateful for the continued support from our GCPA family.

As we discussed what this season would look like, the focus was on not only how but when to safely return to performance. In solidarity and respect for the entire theatre community that is suffering during this time and for the continued safety of our actors and staff, we knew taking it slow and being ready to pivot at a moment's notice is the only way to move forward (and, of course, with heavy safety policies and procedures!).

Our first production, Flat Stanley Online Edition, is the ideal way to jump-start our season safely and also launch our new program: Theatre for Young Audiences by Young Artists. Fully rehearsed and performed from home, this family-friendly musical will entertain the whole family and classrooms across St. Louis. We have big plans for the TYAYA program including adding a second production, Dear Edwina Online Edition!

To keep a safe distance from a lot of singing, live musicians, and live audiences, the play Anne of Green Gables (another GCPA first!) was perfect for our winter slot! Anne’s spirit, joy, and ability to adapt to any situation is the perfect analogy for 2020. With options to live stream or record in small groups if necessary, we can’t wait to share this masked, streamed performance with you. Join us online in January 2021 for this classic tale!

With so much disappointment from the shutdown, we knew we had to get all of our postponed shows back on the schedule. Urinetown, Frozen KIDS, Legally Blonde Jr., and Cabaret will finally get their time on stage. For Urinetown, the first to get the COVID boot, we have plans to produce this show No. Matter. What. Depending on the current situation, we will be able to produce this show as normal, streamed to a virtual audience, or even rehearsed and performed remotely from home (another Zoom-sical!). Quickly after we announced the postponement, the cast took to the rallying cry, “Urinetown will live!” and we are happy to say that will definitely happen. Hail Malthus!

Being GCPA, you probably know we always go big. Already 6 shows deep, we aren’t stopping there.

In addition to the reboot of most of our 2019-2020 season, we are ecstatic to also produce a spring Main Stage musical, the tap-dancing classic we’ve wanted to produce since we opened, 42nd Street; another middle school summer production, Godspell Jr.; and Amélie , a second high school summer production. Each of these shows was chosen to provide as many performance opportunities for our St. Louis youth when we are able to return to the stage.

While the future of live performance is still uncertain, I am ever-grateful that we are able to provide such an extensive season of opportunities for St. Louis youth. GCPA is growing and 2021 will certainly show that.

Director’s Note Frozen Kids is a dream production for so many young people. When the story first struck the big screen, it had a response that was virtually unparalleled in Disney's history. A young woman born with mystical ice powers, a hopeful and loving sister, and a bond that never broke after repeated attempts of severance, combine to form an exciting, adventurous tale about coming of age and accepting oneself. When a final blow tries to break the sisters apart for good, true love prevails.

The heroines, Anna and Elsa, remind us that true love exists in many forms - saving the day when least expected.

One of my favorite lines in the show is, "Everyone's a bit of a fixer upper, that's what it's all about...We need each other to build us up and round us out...The only fixer upper fixer that can fix a fixer upper is true love." Not only is it an awesome tongue twister, it is also a sweet reminder that we were not made for perfection. We were not made to try to fix people into perfection, either. None of us have it within our own power to change each other, or even ourselves. Change - lasting, positive change - comes through love. Elsa tries multiple tactics to try to change herself: gloves, training, hiding, and more. But what ultimately helps to soften her heart is the knowledge that her sister loves her for her, no matter what. Elsa is able to turn inward and realize that she is worthy of love - not despite her imperfections, but accepting them as part of her. When we show others love, it empowers them to love themselves. When we love ourselves for who we are, it empowers us to love others in a deeper way.

Anna and Elsa's story also reminds us of the power of empathy. It is Anna's open mind and unconditional love towards Elsa that fuels her pursuit of understanding her sister in order to help her. When Elsa finally accepts Anna's deep care for her, she is able to engage with Anna and receive that empathy. We see similar themes of this empathy in Kristoff's love of Anna, which sees her as she is, understands her perhaps better than she understand herself, and loves all of her. We see it in the King and Queen's love of their daughters that would do anything to save them and do right by them. The characters of Frozen show us how empathy is most impactful when both hearts are engaged. It is not until Elsa opens up to her sister that Anna’s empathy truly begins to take hold in a redemptive way, setting Elsa on a course not only to accept love from others, but also also to accept herself as worthy of love and empathy and be able to extend that to herself. When Anna begins to understand and accept Kristoff’s love, it empowers her to push through impossible situations and continue to fight for love in its purest forms. In the end, the characters find that through pursuing each other in love and opening their hearts to receive it, individuals can come together to realize a deep and transformative connection that has impact far beyond what they could have imagined.

Telling this story allows our students to put themselves in the shoes of those that pursue daring empathy, love of self, and love of others. They get to discuss, experience, and learn about giving and receiving empathy by seeing the world through the eyes of their characters. They get to experience what true love is in a way that will help them appreciate those around them in a new way. They get to begin an inner monologue of self acceptance and understanding of worth. This practice helps them to process their inner and outer worlds so much more fully. It gives them the opportunity to reflect on their own lives and exercise this love and empathy for themselves. The story of Frozen Kids could not have come at a better time for our students, as they have just overcome such a challenging season that threw their inner and outer worlds into chaos. It is a privilege for us to guide them through these concepts and watch as the themes sink into their hearts, bringing even just a small amount of harmony back to their spirits.

As a company, we were overjoyed to produce a live, in person theatrical experience for this group of young people, celebrating their resilience and triumph over such a strange and difficult time of their lives. Thank you so much for joining us as we celebrate your students today. We could not feel more privileged to guide them through this expression. Thank you for supporting live theatre!
