Artistic Director’s Note Welcome to our 2021-2022 Season! Following an epic 10-show season last year, we knew we had to go big. While we may doing half the quantity of shows this year, we've definitely shown up with blockbuster, big-Broadway fun! I've wanted to produce Annie since the day we opened our doors - and I am elated that it has finally made it to our Main Stage Season. We've tried to secure rights for this production almost every year since we opened, so when we finally got a "yes," I was beyond gleeful. This show has always had a special place in my heart. Of course, Annie has talented kids and dogs - two of my passions - and it's the show that turned me on to theatre. But more than that, Annie Is practically a perfect show and I'd be happy to unpack that with anyone (over a cup of coffee - of course). The fact we were able to bring in Berloni Theatrical Animals will make it even more magical for you as it has for our cast...and certainly me. Something Rotten will round out our Main Stage Season, and if you aren't familiar with it - get ready. This side-splitting, tap-dancing, Shakespearean extravaganza is going to be a massive hit. It's hard to explain in a short paragraph - but it includes eggs and omelettes dancing on stage. If that doesn't intrigue you, I don't know what will! It's still fairly newly available and hasn't been produced a lot in our area. Be sure to secure tickets when they go on sale! We always look forward to our Summer Season. It provides lots of opportunities for actors of all ages to get on the GCPA stage and gives us the chance to work with so many talented kids! For our Minis (age 6-10) production camp, we chose the heartwarming Frog and Toad KIDS, based on the children's book series of the same name. With lots of lovable characters and brilliantly written music and lyrics, it's the perfect fit for this slot. Whether your young actor is having their first or umpteenth theatrical experience, this is the show for them! No audition required. Registration for each of 3 camp opportunities opens January 5th. They will go fast, so set that alarm! We are thrilled to offer two production opportunities for our middle school-age students (age 11 14). This age group often has fewer opportunities for spoken roles in our Main Stage Season, and we couldn't be happier to give them double the chances this summer. Footloose Youth Edition will fill our normal production camp slot. No need to explain why this one will be a riot - epic dancing, fun roles, hit songs, and cowboy boots! In addition to the production camp, we will offering our first middle school production not in camp form: 13 the Musical (ages 12 - 14). This Broadway hit is a story about what it's like to be 13 told by 13-year-olds. This musical follows the story of Evan, who moves from big-city New York to a small town in Indiana and experiences all the heartache that comes with being the "new kid." This story touches on mature topics that are so prevalent at this time of life: bullying, peer pressure, family drama, and more. It sounds heavy, which being 13 can definitely feel, but this show is hysterical, touching, and a real bop. (Not sure if the 13-year-olds still say that...) Finally, Bonnie and Clyde will close our season. The high school (age 14 - 19) production is a very special experience every year, and this year will definitely not disappoint. Following the journey of lovers-turned-outlaws, this show bookends our season with another Great Depression-Era story but notably different In tone from our red-headed-optimist. With amazing music, fun effects, and a couple you will love when you should hate them - it's a journey worthy of this coveted slot. While we are grateful to be back on the stage - the preciousness of live theatre is still very present. We are devoted to continuing to tell amazing stories, with amazing actors, in safe spaces. We are so grateful you are joining us. If you like what you see, please consider joining us on our mission to provide quality, challenging, and out-of-the-box theatre for St. Louis youth. See our shows, take our classes, spread the word, volunteer, or donate. We’d love your story with GCPA to begin today.

Director’s Note There are lots of reasons to love the story Footloose: from its timeless hits like “Holding Out For A Hero” and its titular song, to its 80’s glam complete with big hair. Still the production offers so much more that makes the story relevant today. Welcome to the fictional town of Bomont (which I recently discovered is not so fictional after all)! In 1980, the real city of Elmore, Oklahoma became the inspiration for the beloved tale that takes the stage today. While Elmore’s history is not well recorded, a simple Google search reveals that Footloose is “loosely” based on the town’s law banning public dancing which was enacted at its founding in the 1860’s and remained in place until 1980. That’s when a group of high school rebels decided they wanted to hold a prom. Classically, the adults and young people of Elmore clashed, for fear that dancing in the streets would lead to “dancing in the sheets.” By a narrow vote, the Elmore City High School classes of 1980-1981 changed their town’s history and were allowed to have their dance. Forty-two years later, it might seem hard to imagine that world – a place where something so basic as public dancing could possibly be illegal. Yet, if you consider Footloose’s story, you will realize that Bomont doesn’t feel so far away after all. A small, middle-America town with polarizing beliefs dividing a community. Kids whose dreams are bigger than those of their folks. Generations clashing. The fear of change. And the vilification of a nonconformist. Our protagonist, Ren, is ever the lovable challenger. He doesn't get into town with the intention of ticking people off, but somehow he does anyway with his slick moves and city-kid attitude. His quick-witted quips are an elegant mask for what is a truly vulnerable character. He’s a little lost, a lotta lonely – someone unknowingly seeking connection. Enter Ariel. Daughter to Reverend Shaw Moore, she could easily follow the trope of “Preacher’s Kid.” Yet her complexity is immense – she is gutsy, persistent and ambitious. Her dreams reach far beyond the small-town expectations set by her father. But, after the loss of her brother in a tragic car accident, her relationship with her family is strained. Ariel carries the weight of her family’s pain and tries to resist the shackles the incident forged in her father to control his remaining child. When Ren and Ariel’s two worlds collide, something magical happens: Opposites not only attract, they inspire. Their connection turns the whole town upside down by daring to dream a better reality. One where grief is shared, vulnerability is revered, and, of course, dancing is freedom! These actors breathe new life into Bomont for us. For three weeks, we’ve rehearsed, sung, laughed, played, and danced together. This group is not only exceptionally talented, but their undeniable love for each other and this story is contagious. We’re all trying to do what’s best for ourselves and our communities, but sometimes life gets in the way. Sometimes we try so hard to find an ounce of control, that we neglect to connect. And sometimes, what we really need to do is turn on some music and dance fearlessly. There are few band aids for the world’s pain so joyous as shared movement. And the joy these kids embody will radiate far beyond the stage tonight, leaving us with songs in our heads, and grooves that make us wanna “cut foot loose!”

Born and raised in Salt Lake City, UT, Sarah has been singing and performing in venues around the world from a very young age. She studied at the American and Dramatic Academy (AMDA) in NYC where she went on to be cast in the first National Tour of Oklahoma. Some of her favorite theater credits include: Beauty and the Beast (Belle), Into the Woods (Cinderella), Oklahoma (Laurie), as well as several projects with the Walt Disney Company. Her love of theater has extended beyond her personal career to her work as a choreographer and Music Director for several youth theater productions including: Singing in the Rain, Oliver, Brigadoon, Bye Bye Birdie, and Godspell Jr.. For the last 20 years she has owned and operated her own vocal studio in several locations around the country, and is currently teaching in St. Louis, MO.

Who's Who Hope Brazel (Choreographer) is a St. Louis native and proud GCPA alumni, and she has been a part of GCPA for the last 4 years acting, teaching, stage managing and choreographing. Hope has been a part of the theatre scene in St. Louis for years, working with companies such as Variety Theatre, The Muny, and being heavily involved in Webster Conservatory Musical Theatre Dance. For the past year Hope has been living in New York City, working as a professional actor and is absolutely ecstatic to be back at GCPA for the summer! Lydia Kibler (Assistant Choreographer) is a recent highschool graduate, and will be pursuing a BFA in Musical Theater in the upcoming school year. You may have seen Lydia most recently as Snug and the dance captain of GCPA’s Something Rotten. Before that, Lydia worked on GCPA’s production of Annie as the assistant choreographer, and has been involved in many other productions at GCPA. Lydia would like to thank the rest of the Footloose team for trusting her with creative input and guiding her through this process with so much kindness. She hopes you enjoy the show and sends so much love to the cast and crew. Basil Hand (Stage Manager) is happy to be Stage Managing a second GCPA summer production and getting to work with such a talented group of actors. They’ve been a part of the GCPA family since high school, and they’re happy to be back at the Riem theatre for the summer before they head back to Tufts University. Enjoy the show!
