Artistic Director’s Note Welcome to our 2021-2022 Season! Following an epic 10-show season last year, we knew we had to go big. While we may doing half the quantity of shows this year, we've definitely shown up with blockbuster, big-Broadway fun!

I've wanted to produce Annie since the day we opened our doors - and I am elated that it has finally made it to our Main Stage Season. We've tried to secure rights for this production almost every year since we opened, so when we finally got a "yes," I was beyond gleeful. This show has always had a special place in my heart. Of course, Annie has talented kids and dogs - two of my passions - and it's the show that turned me on to theatre. But more than that, Annie Is practically a perfect show and I'd be happy to unpack that with anyone (over a cup of coffee - of course). The fact we were able to bring in Berloni Theatrical Animals will make it even more magical for you as it has for our cast...and certainly me.

Something Rotten will round out our Main Stage Season, and if you aren't familiar with it - get ready. This side-splitting, tap-dancing, Shakespearean extravaganza is going to be a massive hit.

It's hard to explain in a short paragraph - but it includes eggs and omelettes dancing on stage. If that doesn't intrigue you, I don't know what will! It's still fairly newly available and hasn't been produced a lot in our area. Be sure to secure tickets when they go on sale!

We always look forward to our Summer Season. It provides lots of opportunities for actors of all ages to get on the GCPA stage and gives us the chance to work with so many talented kids! For our Minis (age 6-10) production camp, we chose the heartwarming Frog and Toad KIDS, based on the children's book series of the same name. With lots of lovable characters and brilliantly written music and lyrics, it's the perfect fit for this slot. Whether your young actor is having their first or umpteenth theatrical experience, this is the show for them! No audition required. Registration for each of 3 camp opportunities opens January 5th. They will go fast, so set that alarm!

We are thrilled to offer two production opportunities for our middle school-age students (age 11 14). This age group often has fewer opportunities for spoken roles in our Main Stage Season, and we couldn't be happier to give them double the chances this summer. Footloose Youth Edition will fill our normal production camp slot. No need to explain why this one will be a riot - epic dancing, fun roles, hit songs, and cowboy boots!

In addition to the production camp, we will offering our first middle school production not in camp form: 13 the Musical (ages 12 - 14). This Broadway hit is a story about what it's like to be 13 told by 13-year-olds. This musical follows the story of Evan, who moves from big-city New York to a small town in Indiana and experiences all the heartache that comes with being the "new kid." This story touches on mature topics that are so prevalent at this time of life: bullying, peer pressure, family drama, and more. It sounds heavy, which being 13 can definitely feel, but this show is hysterical, touching, and a real bop. (Not sure if the 13-year-olds still say that...)

Finally, Bonnie and Clyde will close our season. The high school (age 14 - 19) production is a very special experience every year, and this year will definitely not disappoint. Following the journey of lovers-turned-outlaws, this show bookends our season with another Great Depression-Era story but notably different In tone from our red-headed-optimist. With amazing music, fun effects, and a couple you will love when you should hate them - it's a journey worthy of this coveted slot.

While we are grateful to be back on the stage - the preciousness of live theatre is still very present.

We are devoted to continuing to tell amazing stories, with amazing actors, in safe spaces. We are so grateful you are joining us.

Director’s Note A Year With Frog and Toad KIDS is a modern rendition of the classic novels by Arnold Lobel.

These dearly loved books taught us much about friendship, love, responsibility, and kindness.

Putting them into a musical brings new life to these lessons with flair and fun. Catchy songs, clever lyrics, and our two heroes bring us back to a simpler time, and take our kids on the journey of a lifetime.

As I began thinking about the deeper meaning behind the stories of Frog and Toad, I realized that their story truly speaks for the human desires of connection and more time. How many of us have found ourselves longing for additional, or even deeper, relationships? How many of us have missed the sweetness of a moment because we were distracted by thoughts of the future? Frog and Toad speaks to these parts of us that society has ingrained in our minds. This story calls us to a new narrative. How often is what we truly long for right around the corner? Better yet, right in front of us?

These ideas are what plague Toad in our story. Toad spends the show lamenting about two things: First she is frustrated that no one sends her letters - implying that no one really cares about her. Little does she know, Frog has written her a letter that just hasn't gotten to her yet.

Frog also demonstrates her care and understanding for Toad throughout the story, proving that she does, indeed, care for Toad. However, because Toad is so wrapped up in her lamenting, she isn't able to appreciate what is already in front of her.

The second theme of Toad's lament threaded throughout the story is that her alarm clock is broken, so she is in a perpetual state of not knowing where the time is, where it's going, or where it's gone. She fears the loss of past time that she could have spent doing what she wanted spending time with loving friends. She fears the present, and how it doesn't hold up to her expectations. She fears the future - not knowing when or how the next danger will present itself.

But Toad's time spent worrying about the time has done more damage to her experience than the continuation of time itself. Because she spends her time with Toad worrying, she doesn't get to experience the bright, beautiful world in front of her.

If we were honest with ourselves, we would confess that we live in a constant state of want, racing against the proverbial clock to reach our unique definitions of success. We want a friend that sees us, we want to know exactly the next steps before we take them, we want to get time back, we want to stop time, we want to speed up time...searching desperately for these things in order to make the most of each moment.

A wise woman once told me, "Kristianna, how can you ask God for more when you haven't loved what He's already given you?" Not only was this a huge wake up call, but it was a sweet song of freedom over my weary heart. In the striving and the pain, I couldn't see the blessings that were plainly in front of me. I kept searching for more because I was always looking ten steps ahead.

But when I was blessed with these words, a veil was lifted and I experienced the blessings around me with renewed depth, excitement, and joy.

Towards the end of the story, of course, Toad realizes how precious she is to Frog, through reading the letter Frog wrote to her a full year earlier. She realizes that she has let so much time pass between her and Frog, and has been so worried about what she doesn't have that she missed what was right in front of her. But as we hope any good friend would, Frog gracefully forgives Toad, and gives the most precious gift a friend could give: more time. it is my hope that these precious actors have enjoyed being fully present throughout this process.

I hope our conversations surrounding friendship, true care, consideration, and kindness have turned their focus towards the friendships they have made in these sweet two weeks together, as well as ones they are sure to enjoy in the future. May we all be inspired to greater depths of kindness and graciousness toward one another.
