Artistic Director’s Note Welcome to our 2020-2021 Season! To be honest, about 6 months ago, I didn’t think I would be able to say those words! What a year 2020 has been, and we couldn’t be more grateful for the continued support from our GCPA family.

As we discussed what this season would look like, the focus was on not only how but when to safely return to performance. In solidarity and respect for the entire theatre community that is suffering during this time and for the continued safety of our actors and staff, we knew taking it slow and being ready to pivot at a moment's notice is the only way to move forward (and, of course, with heavy safety policies and procedures!).

Our first production, Flat Stanley Online Edition, is the ideal way to jump-start our season safely and also launch our new program: Theatre for Young Audiences by Young Artists. Fully rehearsed and performed from home, this family-friendly musical will entertain the whole family and classrooms across St. Louis. We have big plans for the TYAYA program including adding a second production, Dear Edwina Online Edition!

To keep a safe distance from a lot of singing, live musicians, and live audiences, the play Anne of Green Gables (another GCPA first!) was perfect for our winter slot! Anne’s spirit, joy, and ability to adapt to any situation is the perfect analogy for 2020. With options to live stream or record in small groups if necessary, we can’t wait to share this masked, streamed performance with you. Join us online in January 2021 for this classic tale!

With so much disappointment from the shutdown, we knew we had to get all of our postponed shows back on the schedule. Urinetown, Frozen KIDS, Legally Blonde Jr., and Cabaret will finally get their time on stage. For Urinetown, the first to get the COVID boot, we have plans to produce this show No. Matter. What. Depending on the current situation, we will be able to produce this show as normal, streamed to a virtual audience, or even rehearsed and performed remotely from home (another Zoom-sical!). Quickly after we announced the postponement, the cast took to the rallying cry, “Urinetown will live!” and we are happy to say that will definitely happen. Hail Malthus!

Being GCPA, you probably know we always go big. Already 6 shows deep, we aren’t stopping there.

In addition to the reboot of most of our 2019-2020 season, we are ecstatic to also produce a spring Main Stage musical, the tap-dancing classic we’ve wanted to produce since we opened, 42nd Street; another middle school summer production, Godspell Jr.; and Amélie , a second high school summer production. Each of these shows was chosen to provide as many performance opportunities for our St. Louis youth when we are able to return to the stage.

While the future of live performance is still uncertain, I am ever-grateful that we are able to provide such an extensive season of opportunities for St. Louis youth. GCPA is growing and 2021 will certainly show that.

Director’s Note Let me start by saying the next two and a half hours will be uncomfortable and in some places extremely disturbing. This is the first of two trigger warnings this story includes disturbing themes and offensive imagery.

Cabaret is political theatre. This is an unadulterated fact. As such, it was written in a way to give a nod to one of the most famous political playwrights, Bertolt Brecht. As you are now seated in a black box theatre awaiting the start of the show, it is important for you to know a bit about Brecht and his style of theatre as I pulled heavily from it when directing this story.

The type of theatre we are accustomed to is what is called “naturalistic” or “dramatic” theatre where we as an audience forget our own lives for a while and escape into the lives of others. Brecht functioned under what is known as “epic” theatre, where he wanted the audience to remain objective and distant so they could make carefully considered, rational judgements about any social issues in the piece. It has a narrative that leaves issues unresolved, confronting the audience with questions about what they’ll do next, and ideally inspiring the audience to action.

There were several ways in which Brecht “alienated” his audience to keep them objective throughout the experience: narration, direct address, use of placards, freeze frames/tableaus, and stark/harsh lighting, among others.

Narration is used to remind the audience that they are watching a presentation of a story that requires critical thought. This was literally written into Cabaret with the character named “Emcee.” This is another Brechtian convention - not giving names to characters, but simply stating who they are and what function they play in the story.

Direct address is another way of saying “breaking the 4th wall” and, more specifically, speaking directly to the audience not as the character but as the actor playing the character. Fraulein Schneider does this several times throughout the show.

Use of placards is a sign or additional piece of information (in modern theatre it could be a projection) that gives deeper insight to a situation that is not being stated in the text spoken by the actors. This is not a convention I used in this production, although there are several places I thought about doing so. The fact that we are in a three-quarter thrust setup in a black box theatre made it too cumbersome, even in the Epic theatre style, to execute.

Freeze frames/tableaus is exactly as it sounds - moments where actors on stage are frozen, leaving the audience to ponder the meaning in their stasis. This happens with the characters of Fritzie and Cliff.

Director’s Note As for lighting, Brecht believed in keeping lighting simple because he didn’t want the production value to overshadow the messages of the story. More specifically, he preferred harsh, white light as he believed it illuminated the truth. But those who know me and have seen a GCPA show any time since 2017 know that when Tanner Douglas and I sit behind a lighting console, we’re gonna blow it up. I didn’t follow this convention in its purest form. However, I did incorporate the spirit of Brecht’s convention in that scene changes will be illuminated and you will see the run crew and actors setting the stage for the next scene. This aids in Brecht’s quest to keep the audience objective and rational in order to contemplate the message of the story.

Another element of Brechtian style is a concept called “spass,” whose literal translation is “fun.” As I’ve already shared, Brecht wanted to make his audiences think, but in order to keep them from losing themselves in the characters’ emotional journeys, he needed a way to break the rising tension. He did this by inserting songs or comic routines or slapstick that, on the surface, were entertaining, but in fact had a message of their own. This, too, was written into Cabaret, so pay close attention to the lyrics of the songs in the Kit Kat Klub.

Needless to say, this will not be your typical theatrical experience. And it wasn’t for the actors either. They, too, needed to learn about Brecht, his style, and what he believed art could create (social change) in order to tell this story. Make no mistake about it...Cabaret is political theatre.

And here is your second trigger warning: THIS SHOW CONTAINS DISTURBING THEMES AND OFFENSIVE IMAGERY. It will make you uncomfortable. It will make you upset. It will rock you to your core.

And it should drive you to action.

Who's Who Olivia Button (Hermine), an incoming Freshman at Long Island University Post, is excited to be a part of Cabaret. This will be her 3rd show at GCPA. Credits include: Gladys in 42nd Street, Alice in The Addams Family, Agnes in She Kills Monsters, Lenore in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Tintinabula in A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum, Dance Ensemble in Mamma Mia, Big Kid in Matilda, Procne in The Birds, and Dance Ensemble in The Drowsy Chaperone. She studies voice with Kathleen Nuebling, and currently studies dance at COCA and GCPA. Kieran Callahan (Ernst Ludwig) will be a senior this year and is excited to be performing in his second show with GCPA! Past credits include Raphael and Bretodeau in Amélie, Buddy the Elf in Elf the Musical Jr., and other roles in school productions. He studies voice with Phil Woodmore and also enjoys playing soccer and lacrosse for his high school. Kieran would like to thank his parents, castmates, and Dr. Woodmore.

Allison Crandall (Helga) is excited to be performing in her third production with GCPA. Past performances include Darla in Zombie Prom: Atomic Edition, and Ensemble in A Little Princess. Other favorite roles include Frieda in Carrie the Musical (Debut Theatre Company), Agnes in Meet Me in St. Louis (Christ Memorial Productions), and Young Anna in Frozen Jr. (Fox High School).

Allison enjoys competitive dance and acro (Motion Express), singing, acting, cheerleading, and playing saxophone in Marching Band and Jazz Band at Fox High School. Allison would like to thank her dance teachers at Motion Express, her vocal coach, Kristianna Pirrie Dilworth, her band instructor, Thomas Perry, and all of her friends and family for their faith, love, and support.

Dominic Del Pietro (Clifford Bradshaw) is very excited to be in GCPA’s production of Cabaret. Other shows with GCPA include Titanic, A Little Princess, Crazy for You, and more. He’s also very excited to be back on the bottom right corner of the show poster, as he was in The Music Man and White Christmas. It is a thrill for him to be taking a serious role for the first time with this company.

Lauren Elise Dunn (Hanna) is so excited to be performing in her fourth show at GCPA, and with another phenomenal cast. Lauren will be a Senior at Villa Duchesne this year and plans on attending college for musical theatre in the fall of 2022. Her favorite credits include Little Red in Into the Woods (COCA), Annie in Annie (Act Two), Arista in The Little Mermaid (Shooting Star), and 42nd Street (GCPA). Lauren would like to thank her cast for all of their hard work as well as the creative team for putting together such a meaningful show.

Specifically she’d like to thank Stephanie, Paul, and Lori for always challenging her and helping her to grow as an artist. Other credits include Thea in Spring Awakening (GCPA), Miss Honey in Matilda (GCPA), Ensemble/Co-Dance Captain in Urinetown (Lindenwood University), Into the Woods (The Muny), and Grease (CBC).

Lizzy is currently working towards earning her BFA in Musical Theatre with a minor in dance at Lindenwood University. She’d like to thank Paul, Stephanie, and Lori for all the opportunities over the years and for giving her a second home at GCPA. Susannah Egley (Rosie) is excited to be returning to GCPA as Rosie in Cabaret.

Credits include: The Music Man (GCPA), A Little Princess (GCPA), A Christmas Carol (The Rep), and multiple Muny shows, most recently including Matilda, The Unsinkable Molly Brown, and Young Frankenstein. She previously studied dance and competed at Charmette Academy Of Dance, and she studies voice with Larry Pry. She would like to thank Stephanie, Lori, and Paul for the opportunity to be a part of another amazing show!

Drew Goldman (Herr Schultz) is a recent graduate from Parkway Central High School and is very excited to finally put on Cabaret after last year's postponement.

Past productions include Tom in Radium Girls, Fredrick/Phillip in Noises Off!, Ensemble in Chicago, Matthew in Anne of Green Gables, and Joseph/Elton John/Others in Amélie.

Who's Who band in 2020. Drew is planning on studying music business at Baldwin Wallace’s Conservatory of Music. He would like to thank Paul Pagano for always believing in him and being a great teacher over the past year at GCPA. Olivia Hellin (Fritzie Kost) is proud to be appearing in her eighth and final GCPA production! This fall, she will begin pursuing a BFA in Musical Theatre at the University of Utah. Thank you to Paul, Stephanie and Lori for championing the importance of youth theatre and for letting me be a part of the GCPA family. Because of you, I leave St. Louis ready for the next step in my journey and hope to make you proud. Thanks also to my family and friends for their love and support.

She is also a current member of The Muny Teen Troupe. (Stages St. Louis), Beauty and the Beast and Wizard of Oz (Variety Children's Theatre). Madeline studies voice with Lisa Fahey, dance at COCA and the Professional Dance Center, and acting with GCPA. Lydia Kibler (Marta) is so excited to be a part of Cabaret this summer. While this is her first summer show with GCPA, she has been in various Mainstage productions such as 42nd Street, Urinetown, and Matilda. Cara Langhauser (Fräulein Schneider) "Willkommen! Bienvenue! Welcome back to live theatre! Finally! A rising sophomore at University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point, getting her BFA in Musical Theatre, Cara (she/her/hers) is overjoyed, yet heartbroken, to finally perform in her last show at GCPA. Previous credits include: Ann Collier in The 1940’s Radio Hour (DeSmet HS), Morticia Addams in The Addams Family (Rosati-Kain HS), Musician/Courtier in Shakespeare In Love (Insight Theatre Company), Ida Straus in Titanic: The Musical (GCPA), Domina in A Funny Thing… Forum (DeSmet HS).

Filmographer / Video Editor for In This Moment: Reflections of Our Time (UWSP; Kennedy Center Citizen Artists Award Winner). She is also the current UWSP Players Student Artistic Alliance Publicist.

Andrew Maroney (Emcee) is so excited to perform with his new friends in his second GCPA production!

Andrew recently graduated from Duchesne High School, and plans to pursue a BFA in Musical Theatre next year at Marymount Manhattan College. His credits include: Nino in Amélie (GCPA), Rich in Be More Chill (Stages), Billy Cane in Bright Star (Visitation High School), Jesse Tuck in Tuck Everlasting (Vivre Theatre), Horton the Elephant in Seussical (Dayspring Arts and Education), and Lumiere in Beauty and the Beast (Dayspring Arts and Education). He has received three AFL Award nominations for his work as Pharaoh in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Lumiere in Beauty and the Beast, and Horton in Seussical. “Hope you enjoy the show!”

Who's Who Sammy Parsons (Victor/ Max), is thrilled to be part of this amazing cast. When Sammy is not at practice or hanging out with his friends, he enjoys dance, voice, and acting lessons. Past favorite roles include: Officer Barrel in Urinetown, Rudolpho in Matilda, Fester in The Addams Family, Timon in The Lion King, and Michael Banks in Mary Poppins. Thanks to the directors, cast, and crew for working so hard to let us perform live during COVID, and to our audience for coming to see our hard work. Enjoy!

Brodie Pratt (Bobby / Others) is very excited to be performing with GCPA again in this production of Cabaret. He has previously been in Matilda, 42nd Street, Anne of Green Gables, Urinetown and Amélie at GCPA and The Lion King, Mary Poppins, and Once On This Island with COCA. He was also in multiple school productions, most notably Newsies. Brodie loves theatre and can not be more thankful to all those who have supported him along the way. Julia Rhodes (Texas), is very excited to be performing in her second GCPA show. She also played Anne Reilly in 42nd Street with GCPA. She is going into 11th grade and enjoys dancing at Krupinski Academy of Dance and voice lessons in her spare time.

She would like to thank GCPA and the cast and crew of Cabaret for this wonderful experience. She would also like to send love to her Mom and Dad for always cheering her on and supporting her.

CREATIVE TEAM Paul Pagano (Director and Executive Director), a native of St. Louis, received his BA in Drama from Washington University and Masters in Theatre Education from Fontbonne University. As a proud member of Actors’ Equity Association since 2001, Paul has had the opportunity to work with the Guthrie Theatre, Utah Shakespeare Festival, Children’s Theatre Company, Chanhassen Dinner Theatre, Hey City Theatre, the MUNY, STAGES St. Louis, HotCity Theatre, and many others. As a director and fight choreographer, in

addition to 19 productions (and counting) at GCPA, credits include the MUNY, Washington University, Fontbonne University, Missouri All-State Theatre, and Kirkwood Theatre Guild. As an instructor, Paul has taught at GCPA, COCA, St. Louis University High School, and STAGES Performing Arts Academy. Love to wife, Lori, and kids, Xavier and Kalia!

Lori Barrett-Pagano (Music Director and Managing Director) is a Co-Founder and Managing Director of GCPA. She earned her Master of Music in Vocal Performance from Washington University in St. Louis. She has been teaching voice for over 25 years – currently as an adjunct voice faculty at St. Louis University, as well as voice and classes at GCPA. Professionally, Lori has performed with The MUNY, STAGES St. Louis, Union Avenue Opera, Echo Theatre, Spotlight Theatre, MainStage Musicals and SIUE Summer Showbiz. Regional credits include The Minnesota Opera, North Star Opera, Minneapolis Musical Theatre, Theatre in the Round, and The Gilbert & Sullivan Very Light Opera Company. Lori is so proud of the hard work and dedication of this amazing cast. Much love to her husband Paul, and her children Xavier and Kalia.

Stephanie Fox (Artistic Director) Originally from Oklahoma, Stephanie graduated from the University of Central Oklahoma with a Bachelor of Music: Music Theatre and continued her studies independently in New York. As a proud member of Actors’ Equity (Stephanie Long) she has performed regionally, on National Tour and in New York. In St. Louis, Stephanie has taught at COCA, STAGES, and is choreographer for Chaminade College Prep. She is humbled to work with the amazing young actors that pass through GCPA’s doors, both real and virtual. Here's to 10/10!

Hope Brazel (Stage Manager), a native to St. Louis and proud GCPA alum, has been a part of the St. Louis theatre community for over a decade, performing with community, youth and professional theatre companies across the area.

After graduating high school, Hope quickly returned to GCPA as a teaching artist and

Who's Who stage manager. This fall, Hope will be moving to New York City to further pursue her career in musical theatre. "I’m so grateful to have been a part of this production. Here’s to what we’ve all been waiting for for quite some time! Enjoy!"

Abbey Paul (Assistant Stage Manager) is entering her junior year of high school, and she is thrilled to be working on her 5th GCPA show this season. Abbey is a member of the CrAFT program and a part of YTC, most recently seen in Amélie this past June. She takes voice with Catherine Kopff and classes through GCPA with Paul Pagano and Stephanie Fox. Working on this show was a wonderful opportunity and Abbey is so proud of this cast.

Tracey Newcomb (Costume Design) has had the privilege to work with St Louis area theatre for the past 10 years. She has won 2 AFL awards for best costume and has been nominated for several more. She works with several different theatre groups as well as schools. She is the costume designer for the City of St Charles for their festivals Legends and Lanterns and Christmas Traditions. Tracey has costumed GCPA’s shows since 2015 and has enjoyed the opportunity to work such great talented staff and youth. Tracey lives with her husband Paul and youngest daughter Brooke. She has 4 other adult children and 2 granddaughters that own her heart.

George Shea (Set Design) George is a St. Louis based set/scenic, prop, costume, and cosplay designer. He has had the pleasure of designing sets and building props for local and regional theater. Most recently George has designed sets for Chaminade College Preparatory School, NGTC/Vivre’ Theatre, West End Players Guild, set and props for Fly North Theatricals, as well as Bluff City Theater’s complete 2019 Season.

George has designed and built props for Marquette High School theatre. Through the years George has also designed and built numerous props and dance costumes for Motion Express School of Dance and Acrobatics. George is grateful for the opportunity to design with GCPA!

Laura Skroska (Props Design) Laura Skroska is excited to be returning for her eighth show with GCPA. Laura studied technical theatre at Northwestern University and SIU-Edwardsville, and received her MFA in Painting from .Fontbonne University. Laura also works as Technical Director for the New Jewish Theatre. Other recent credits include Scenic and Props Design for St. Louis Shakespeare Festival’s TourCo, Props Master for Winter Opera St. Louis, and Shakespeare in the Park. Laura would like to thank her husband, family, and pet rabbits for their love and support.
