Artistic Director’s Note Welcome to our 2020-2021 Season! To be honest, about 6 months ago, I didn’t think I would be able to say those words! What a year 2020 has been, and we couldn’t be more grateful for the continued support from our GCPA family.

As we discussed what this season would look like, the focus was on not only how but when to safely return to performance. In solidarity and respect for the entire theatre community that is suffering during this time and for the continued safety of our actors and staff, we knew taking it slow and being ready to pivot at a moment's notice is the only way to move forward (and, of course, with heavy safety policies and procedures!).

Our first production, Flat Stanley Online Edition, is the ideal way to jump-start our season safely and also launch our new program: Theatre for Young Audiences by Young Artists. Fully rehearsed and performed from home, this family-friendly musical will entertain the whole family and classrooms across St. Louis. We have big plans for the TYAYA program including adding a second production, Dear Edwina Online Edition!

To keep a safe distance from a lot of singing, live musicians, and live audiences, the play Anne of Green Gables (another GCPA first!) was perfect for our winter slot! Anne’s spirit, joy, and ability to adapt to any situation is the perfect analogy for 2020. With options to live stream or record in small groups if necessary, we can’t wait to share this masked, streamed performance with you. Join us online in January 2021 for this classic tale!

With so much disappointment from the shutdown, we knew we had to get all of our postponed shows back on the schedule. Urinetown, Frozen KIDS, Legally Blonde Jr., and Cabaret will finally get their time on stage. For Urinetown, the first to get the COVID boot, we have plans to produce this show No. Matter. What. Depending on the current situation, we will be able to produce this show as normal, streamed to a virtual audience, or even rehearsed and performed remotely from home (another Zoom-sical!). Quickly after we announced the postponement, the cast took to the rallying cry, “Urinetown will live!” and we are happy to say that will definitely happen. Hail Malthus!

Being GCPA, you probably know we always go big. Already 6 shows deep, we aren’t stopping there.

In addition to the reboot of most of our 2019-2020 season, we are ecstatic to also produce a spring Main Stage musical, the tap-dancing classic we’ve wanted to produce since we opened, 42nd Street; another middle school summer production, Godspell Jr.; and Amélie , a second high school summer production. Each of these shows was chosen to provide as many performance opportunities for our St. Louis youth when we are able to return to the stage.

While the future of live performance is still uncertain, I am ever-grateful that we are able to provide such an extensive season of opportunities for St. Louis youth. GCPA is growing and 2021 will certainly show that.

Director’s Note Amélie tells the story of a girl with a wild imagination. So we shouldn’t have been surprised when the licensing of the production was a wild experience. We first licensed the Broadway version of the story. Then we were told that the Broadway version could no longer be licensed for production because the London version was preferred by the creators. Then when we got the scripts, we found that it was neither the Broadway nor the London version, but rather a hybrid of the two that mostly resembled the London version. (It’s not uncommon for there to be several versions of script as creators have several iterations that get produced over time. It is uncommon, though, for so many versions to be shuffled for licensing at once.)

Either way, it was good preparation to tell a story that has such a fanciful heroine. Drawing its source material from the movie, the musical retains so much of the magical quality that Amélie imagination creates. One of the biggest challenges is creating that magic with a small ensemble cast without the benefit of stopping the camera to change costumes and locations. Each moment of the story melts into the next with many ensemble members changing from one character to another without leaving the stage (similar to the ensemble in Come From Away). And while it’s one of the biggest challenges about this story, it’s also one of the things that makes it most exciting.

As scenes move seamlessly from one to the next, there’s a delicate balance that gets struck. Not only are there paths taken on stage, there are paths taken backstage as well to ensure the story moves forward like proverbial clockwork.

As an actor, I’ve had the privilege to perform in shows like this...where the work done offstage was just as tightly choreographed as on. There’s a balance of excitement and anxiety as we flow through the story and make the audience feel like it’s effortless.

And as this cast makes Amélie's story come to life ‘effortlessly,’ they did it in the shortest rehearsal process GCPA has ever had. From first rehearsal to opening night was 20 days. That’s a tremendous pace for a company of professional actors working 8 hour days, 6 days a week. These actors did it working 5 days a week, an average of 6 hours at rehearsal, all while they completed finals for school, performed vocal recitals, and attended graduation ceremonies. We’re incredibly proud to collaborate with these young artists.

Who's Who Mia Battaglia (Young Amélie) recently finished the third grade, and loves theatre.

She has performed with GCPA in Peter Pan Jr. (Brave Girl), The Big One-Oh (Jennifer), and Dear Edwina (Periwinkle). She is so excited to be in Amélie! She was a part of Variety Theatre’s Light the Lights virtual show last fall, and she is looking forward to performing in their production of The Music Man later this year. She will soon appear as Matilda in Matilda Jr. at Stages Performing Arts Academy, and in Frozen KIDS with GCPA. She would like to thank everyone at GCPA for their support and all the incredible opportunities.

Kieran Callahan (Raphael / Bretodeau / US Nino) is in 11th grade and is excited to join GCPA this year! His credits include Buddy in Elf The Musical Jr. and also a variety hour show, both at his high school. He studies voice with Phil Woodmore and enjoys playing soccer and lacrosse on his high school teams. Kieran would like to thank his parents, castmates, and Dr. Woodmore.

Michael Curdt (Blind Beggar / Others / US Hipolito) is thrilled to be back at GCPA for his second show. Past credits include William Murdoch in Titanic (GCPA), Gomez in The Addams Family (Shrewsbury Youth Theatre), Mozart in Amadeus (CBC High School), Mike Dillard / Man 3 / Allen Epstein in Working (CBC Theatre), and Caldwell B Cladwell in Urinetown (CBC Theatre).

Michael would like to thank his friends and family for all of their love and support and Paul, Stephanie, and Lori and the entire cast and crew of Amélie for all their hard work. Enjoy the show!

Ella Donnelly (Amandine / Philomene, US Amélie) is excited to be making her GCPA debut in Amélie! Previous credits include the Baker’s Wife in Into the Woods and Jo March in Little Women as well as Glory in Almost, Maine at Villa Duchesne. She plans to resume her freshman year at the University of Southern California in January, where she is pursuing a degree in Acting. When not chasing her dreams, Ella can be found whipping up caramel macchiatos and the like at her barista job.

Drew Goldman (Joseph / Elton John / Others) is a now graduated senior from Parkway Central High School and is so excited to be in his second performance with GCPA, after portraying Matthew in Anne of Green Gables. He is also looking forward to being a part of GCPA’s Cabaret later this summer. Other shows include Noises Off! (Fredrick/Phillip), Chicago (Ensemble), and Radium Girls (Tom). He plans to study Music Business at The Conservatory of Music at Baldwin Wallace University.

Ariana Kroeger (Amélie) is thrilled to bring this story to life! She is a sophomore at Clayton High School, she receives her training as part of the CrAFT program at GCPA, and she studies voice with Katie Kopff. Ariana is extremely grateful for all of the opportunities that GCPA has provided and would like to thank the directors for all of their hard work. She also would like to continue the tradition of specifically thanking her cats, who will eventually learn to return her persistent affections.

Olivia Limbaugh (Suzanne) is a senior and is so excited to be a part of Amélie as her last show in her high school career. Some of her credits include Martha in Spring Awakening, Frieda in Carrie, and Mrs. Squires in The Music Man, all at GCPA, as well as Velma in Chicago at her high school. She is a part of the CrAFT College program at GCPA with Paul Pagano as her mentor. She also studies voice with Martin Fox and is an active member in her high school choir. “I’m thankful for my family and friends being so supportive over the years and for GCPA giving me amazing opportunities that have allowed me to grow as a performer and as a person.”

Andrew Maroney (Nino) is so excited to perform with his new friends in his very first GCPA production! Andrew recently graduated from Duchesne High School, and plans to pursue a BFA in Musical Theatre next year at Marymount Manhattan College. His credits include: Rich in Be More Chill (Stages), Billy Cane in Bright Star (Visitation High School), Jesse Tuck in Tuck Everlasting (Vivre Theatre), Horton the Elephant in Seussical (Dayspring Arts and Education), and Lumiére in Beauty and the Beast

Who's Who (Dayspring Arts and Education). He has received three AFL Award nominations for his work as Pharaoh in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Lumiére in Beauty and the Beast, and Horton in Seussical. Enjoy the show!

Annalise McCann (Others / US Gina & Suzanne) recently graduated from high school in May, and she is so happy that her last GCPA show is a wonderful story like Amélie! Some of her favorite shows over the last four years have been Chicago (Velma Kelly), Titanic (Marion Thayer / US Ida Strauss), and Urinetown (Bobby Strong). Annalise was recently admitted to NYU Tisch School of the Arts and plans to get a BFA in Musical Theatre. She is so grateful for the support that her teachers, friends, and family have given her.

Ian McCann (Dufayel / Others) is a high school sophomore and thrilled to be in his fifth show at GCPA, following roles in Titanic, Matilda, Anne of Green Gables, and Urinetown. He is in his fourth year of studying voice with Jill O’Brien through Webster University’s Community Music School, and his third year of acting classes at GCPA. Ava Musgraves (Gina), a rising senior, is ecstatic to be in the cast of Amélie at GCPA. Notable past credits include: Hope Cladwell in Urinetown (GCPA), Laura Wingfield in The Glass Menagerie (WGHS), The Narrator in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (WGHS), Wednesday Addams in The Addams Family Y@P (GCPA), Big Kid/Mom in Matilda (GCPA), Tobias Ragg in Sweeney Todd SE (Ignite Theatre Company), Ronnette in Little Shop of Horrors (Ignite Theatre Company), and Penny Pingleton in Hairspray Jr. (Ignite Theatre Company).

She studies voice with Colin Healy and dances at GCPA. Ava would like to thank her fellow cast mates, directors, and family.

Abbey Paul (Others, US Philomene), a sophomore, is thrilled to be a part of Amélie. Past credits include: Josephine Strong in Urinetown (GCPA), Annabelle Fuller in George Washington Slept Here (North Players), and Alice in Bye Bye Birdie

(St. Louis Summer Players). She studies voice with Catherine Kopff, acting with Paul Pagano, musical theatre dance with Stephanie Fox, and tap with Spencer Milford. Abbey is also a member of GCPA’s CrAFT program. “Many thanks to my family, friends, and incredible cast mates!"

Kathryn Pierce (Others / US Young Amélie) is a third grader. This is her third musical appearance, but she is excited to have her first opportunity to understudy. In her free time, Kathryn enjoys reading, writing, singing, piano, dancing, Girl Scouts, and softball. She would like to thank her mother for encouraging her to audition and her father for helping her practice.

Brodie Pratt (Others) is very excited to be returning to GCPA in this production of Amélie. He has previously been in Matilda, 42nd Street, Anne of Green Gables and Urinetown at GCPA as well as Lion King, Mary Poppins, and Once On This Island with other local theaters. He was also in multiple school productions, most notably Newsies. Brodie hopes you have fun and enjoy the show!

Kylie Reuter (Others / US Georgette), a high school junior, is extremely excited to be in her first show with GCPA! Credits include: Reno Sweeney in Anything Goes and Xavia in Puffs at her high school, and Scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz at Ignite Theatre Company. She studies voice with Sarah Wirthlin and sings in her school's jazz ensemble. She also plays trumpet with the jazz ensemble and participates in marching band. Kylie is thankful for the opportunity to be in such a beautiful show!

Who's Who Paul Thibodeau (Hipolito / Others / US Raphael & Bretodeau), an eighth grader, is so thrilled to be a part of Amèlie. Credits include: Hot Blades Harry in Urinetown (GCPA) and Captain Hook in Peter Pan (Shrewsbury Youth Theater). He studies voice with Lori Pagano and also plays the alto saxophone in his school band. “Thank you to family, friends, and cast mates!”

Dan Wolfe (Lucien / Others) is super excited to be a part of Amélie with GCPA. Favorite credits from previous productions include A Christmas Story with The Repertory Theatre St. Louis, Wait Until Dark with Theatre Guild of Webster Groves, and Evita with Tuscany Theatre Company. He has also done some film and had a guest starring role in a short film series, Watching the Detectives. Dan is a high school student who enjoys singing and acting whenever possible. Thank you to all of the staff and the entire cast and crew for making this experience a great one!

Anna Wright (Georgette) just finished her sophomore year of high school. This is her first show at GCPA, but she has participated in many others around the community.

Some of her favorite credits include Wednesday Addams in The Addams Family, Brooke in Be More Chill, and Liesl in The Sound of Music. She is very thankful for this experience and excited to share this great story with you!

CREATIVE TEAM Paul Pagano (Director and Executive Director), a native of St. Louis, received his BA in Drama from Washington University and Masters in Theatre Education from Fontbonne University. As a proud member of Actors’ Equity Association since 2001, Paul has had the opportunity to work with the Guthrie Theatre, Utah Shakespeare Festival, Children’s Theatre Company, Chanhassen Dinner Theatre, Hey City Theatre, the MUNY, STAGES St. Louis, HotCity Theatre, and many others. As a director and fight choreographer, in addition to 19 productions (and counting) at GCPA, credits include the MUNY, Washington University, Fontbonne University, Missouri All-State Theatre, and Kirkwood Theatre Guild. As an instructor, Paul has taught at GCPA, COCA, St. Louis

University High School, and STAGES Performing Arts Academy. Love to wife, Lori, and kids, Xavier and Kalia!

Lori Barrett-Pagano (Music Director and Managing Director) is a Co-Founder and Managing Director of GCPA. She earned her Master of Music in Vocal Performance from Washington University in St. Louis. She has been teaching voice for over 25 years – currently as an adjunct voice faculty at St. Louis University, as well as voice and classes at GCPA. Professionally, Lori has performed with The MUNY, STAGES St. Louis, Union Avenue Opera, Echo Theatre, Spotlight Theatre, MainStage Musicals and SIUE Summer Showbiz. Regional credits include The Minnesota Opera, North Star Opera, Minneapolis Musical Theatre, Theatre in the Round, and The Gilbert & Sullivan Very Light Opera Company. Lori is so proud of the hard work and dedication of this amazing cast. Much love to her husband Paul, and her children Xavier and Kalia.

Stephanie Fox (Artistic Director) Originally from Oklahoma, Stephanie graduated from the University of Central Oklahoma with a Bachelor of Music: Music Theatre and continued her studies independently in New York. As a proud member of Actors’ Equity (Stephanie Long) she has performed regionally, on National Tour and in New York. In St. Louis, Stephanie has taught at COCA, STAGES, and is choreographer for Chaminade College Prep. She is humbled to work with the amazing young actors that pass through GCPA’s doors, both real and virtual. This one is for season 7.5. We're now 6 shows in and still dreaming big.

Kamilah Gamble (Stage Manager) is a Parkway Central Graduate and is excited to spend her next four years at Arizona State University. She has been with GCPA since her 6th grade year. She's been in shows from West Side Story to White Christmas to Crazy For You, and her most recent one, 42nd Street. GCPA has given Kamilah the room to grow as this will be her second time stage managing, her first being Urinetown. She is so excited to help tell this amazing story and hope you all enjoy it as much as she does!

Who's Who Tracey Newcomb (Costume Design) has had the privilege to work with St Louis area theatre for the past 10 years. She has won 2 AFL awards for best costume and has been nominated for several more. She works with several different theatre groups as well as schools. She is the costume designer for the City of St Charles for their festivals Legends and Lanterns and Christmas Traditions. Tracey has costumed GCPA’s shows since 2015 and has enjoyed the opportunity to work such great talented staff and youth. Tracey lives with her husband Paul and youngest daughter Brooke. She has 4 other adult children and 2 granddaughters that own her heart.

George Shea (Set Design) George is a St. Louis based set/scenic, prop, costume, and cosplay designer. He has had the pleasure of designing sets and building props for local and regional theater. Most recently George has designed sets for Chaminade College Preparatory School, NGTC/Vivre’ Theatre, West End Players Guild, set and props for Fly North Theatricals, as well as Bluff City Theater’s complete 2019 Season.

George has designed and built props for Marquette High School theatre. Through the years George has also designed and built numerous props and dance costumes for Motion Express School of Dance and Acrobatics. George is grateful for the opportunity to design with GCPA!

Laura Skroska (Props Design) Laura Skroska is excited to be returning for her eighth show with GCPA. Laura studied technical theatre at Northwestern University and SIU-Edwardsville, and received her MFA in Painting from .Fontbonne University. Laura also works as Technical Director for the New Jewish Theatre. Other recent credits include Scenic and Props Design for St. Louis Shakespeare Festival’s TourCo, Props Master for Winter Opera St. Louis, and Shakespeare in the Park. Laura would like to thank her husband, family, and pet rabbits for their love and support.

Justin Smith (Sound) is a St. Louis Native who graduated valedictorian in Audio Engineering and Sound Design from the Institute of Production and Recording in Minneapolis, MN. Since then he's served as the Production Coordinator for the Missouri History Museum for 9+ years, providing audio/visual production for exhibits and events such as "STL 250", "Twilight Tuesdays", and "Panorama's".

Justin has also made a name for himself in the St. Louis Theatre community, assisting in dozens of performances over the last six years. In his spare time Justin enjoys hiking with his wife & schipperkes, Reilly & Rocket.
