Artistic Director’s Note Welcome to our 2021-2022 Season! Following an epic 10-show season last year, we knew we had to go big. While we may doing half the quantity of shows this year, we've definitely shown up with blockbuster, big-Broadway fun!

I've wanted to produce Annie since the day we opened our doors - and I am elated that it has finally made it to our Main Stage Season. We've tried to secure rights for this production almost every year since we opened, so when we finally got a "yes," I was beyond gleeful. This show has always had a special place in my heart. Of course, Annie has talented kids and dogs - two of my passions - and it's the show that turned me on to theatre. But more than that, Annie Is practically a perfect show and I'd be happy to unpack that with anyone (over a cup of coffee - of course). The fact we were able to bring in Berloni Theatrical Animals will make it even more magical for you as it has for our cast...and certainly me.

Something Rotten will round out our Main Stage Season, and if you aren't familiar with it - get ready. This side-splitting, tap-dancing, Shakespearean extravaganza is going to be a massive hit.

It's hard to explain in a short paragraph - but it includes eggs and omelettes dancing on stage. If that doesn't intrigue you, I don't know what will! It's still fairly newly available and hasn't been produced a lot in our area. Be sure to secure tickets when they go on sale!

We always look forward to our Summer Season. It provides lots of opportunities for actors of all ages to get on the GCPA stage and gives us the chance to work with so many talented kids! For our Minis (age 6-10) production camp, we chose the heartwarming Frog and Toad KIDS, based on the children's book series of the same name. With lots of lovable characters and brilliantly written music and lyrics, it's the perfect fit for this slot. Whether your young actor is having their first or umpteenth theatrical experience, this is the show for them! No audition required. Registration for each of 3 camp opportunities opens January 5th. They will go fast, so set that alarm!

We are thrilled to offer two production opportunities for our middle school-age students (age 11 14). This age group often has fewer opportunities for spoken roles in our Main Stage Season, and we couldn't be happier to give them double the chances this summer. Footloose Youth Edition will fill our normal production camp slot. No need to explain why this one will be a riot - epic dancing, fun roles, hit songs, and cowboy boots!

In addition to the production camp, we will offering our first middle school production not in camp form: 13 the Musical (ages 12 - 14). This Broadway hit is a story about what it's like to be 13 told by 13-year-olds. This musical follows the story of Evan, who moves from big-city New York to a small town in Indiana and experiences all the heartache that comes with being the "new kid." This story touches on mature topics that are so prevalent at this time of life: bullying, peer pressure, family drama, and more. It sounds heavy, which being 13 can definitely feel, but this show is hysterical, touching, and a real bop. (Not sure if the 13-year-olds still say that...)

Finally, Bonnie and Clyde will close our season. The high school (age 14 - 19) production is a very special experience every year, and this year will definitely not disappoint. Following the journey of lovers-turned-outlaws, this show bookends our season with another Great Depression-Era story but notably different In tone from our red-headed-optimist. With amazing music, fun effects, and a couple you will love when you should hate them - it's a journey worthy of this coveted slot.

While we are grateful to be back on the stage - the preciousness of live theatre is still very present.

What a perfect year to be in THIS show - being 13 in "13!"

Director’s Note On the surface, 13 is a comedic look at the inner workings of middle school: hormones, the desire to be popular, and staying on top of the social ladder once you’re there. It’s all magnified by the fact that our protagonist, Evan, has been ripped away from the life he knew in NYC and moved to middle-of-nowhere-Indiana following his parent's divorce. And the cherry on top of the sundae-of-suck is Evan’s Bar Mitzvah is only a couple of months away.

Because Evan’s Bar Mitzvah is the primary, driving event of the story, it was important for the cast to understand the meaning behind this religious tradition. Thanks to Lisi Levy, GCPA alum and now staff member, we spent some time with Rabbi Randy Fleisher from Central Reform Congregation. He shared more about the Bar/Bat Mitzvah ritual, including the three primary elements of the service led by the Bar/Bat Mitzvah - a reading from the Torah, a reading from the Haftorah, and the teaching. In the teaching, the Bar/Bat Mitzvah shares lessons learned from their portion of the Torah, often relating to their own lives and how we can apply the teachings in our daily lives.

During our conversation, Lisi had a revelation about the story of 13 which added a new understanding of the story for everyone involved. Because the finale, “A Little More Homework,” seamlessly follows Evan’s Haftorah, it can be interpreted as Evan’s teaching at his Bar Mitzvah.

In her own words: "While looking at the lyrics, there's also this really cool forward motion the song takes in structure that really feels like a bar mitzvah to me. He begins with 'If you stand here behind me / And you call me a man / You're counting on me to come through…'' It feels like he is addressing his parents or Jewish elders (rabbis, Hebrew tutors, etc.), as they often literally sit or stand behind the Bar Mitzvah on the bimah when it comes time for him to lead the service. He then sings "If you're walking beside me / And you want to be friends / You should know I’m depending on you…' It serves as a reminder of the journey he's been on – learning how to start and hold on to friendships at this strange age, especially after the massive life transition out of NYC to Indiana. This song is beautifully structured, mimicking the experience of a Bar Mitzvah and addressing the different people who show up for him. The niche brand of confusion you experience at this age is celebrated through the bridge of the song. It's weird to think when you're 13 that your family (especially during your Bar/Bat Mitzvah) sees you as an adult now. How can you 'become a man' at age 13?

Yet, what you don't realize (or rather, maybe what I did not realize) is that it's really a way of bookmarking your next chapter - no longer a child, but not really an adult. It honors the glorious in-between, and reveres the age for the strange and special amalgamation of hormones and milestones you experience when you’re 13."

This coming-of-age comedy is a lot deeper than it appears. Even deeper than I initially thought when we chose to produce it. I continue to learn more every day I spend with the material, as well as working with this cast. Hopefully you will learn as well.

Who's Who LJ Brady (Malcolm), a rising 8th grader, is thrilled to be a part of this production of 13!

LJ has been with GCPA since kindergarten and has since enjoyed roles such as Peter Pan in Peter Pan Jr., Ensemble in The Music Man, and most recently, Ensemble/Morgenthau in Annie. They have also been in GCPA's Show Starters for the past 2 years. In their free time, LJ enjoys playing bass in school band and in the band they are currently forming, Rock Apocalypse. They also play guitar and enjoy reading and drawing comics. They look forward to playing Ren in GCPA’s production of Footloose Jr. later this summer as well. They would like to thank their castmates, directors and crew! Enjoy the show!

Reese Brinker (Ensemble, u/s Patrice), a rising ninth grader, is thrilled to be a part of Gateway Center for Performing Arts’ production of 13! Other favorite roles include Cecille/Ronnie in GCPA’s Annie, Delta Nu Kate in GCPA’s Legally Blonde, Jr., Winnie Foster in Next Generation’s (Vivre) Tuck Everlasting, JoJo (Joanna) in Dayspring Arts and Education’s production of Seussical, and the Cowardly Lion in DaySpring’s production of the Wizard of Oz Jr. She would like to thank the cast and crew for welcoming her to 13 and a special thank you to Mom, Dad and Haley!

Paige Cuddihee (Molly), is a rising freshman and is very excited to be in 13!

Most recently she was an Elf aboard The Polar Express. This is her 4th GCPA show, and she has been in 12 shows with Shooting Star Productions. One of her favorite roles was Annie in Ignite’s production of Annie Jr. Paige also serves on the leadership team with Arch City Theater Troupe and will be performing in August to raise funds and awareness for JDRF. Paige dances with Professional Dance Center and takes voice with Katie Kopff. Many thanks to Paul, Stephanie and Lori for this incredible opportunity! Enjoy the show!

Robyn Davies (Ensemble, u/s Kendra) hails across the globe! Her favorite roles include Charlotte in Charlotte's Web, Young Fiona in Shrek, and Mike TV in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. She'd like to thank her directors for their inspiring coaching, her cast mates for the fun and laughs, and her friends and family for their loving support!

Ryan Hauck (Charlotte), an incoming freshman, is thrilled to be a part of 13!

Credits include: Matilda in Matilda (GCPA), US Susan and Ensemble in White Christmas (GCPA), Jane in A Little Princess (GCPA), Ensemble in 42nd Street (GCPA) Ensemble in Music Man (GCPA) and Orphan in Annie Warbucks (GCPA). She studies dance at Krupinski Academy and takes voice lessons with Lisa Christine Studios. “Many thanks to everyone at GCPA for this opportunity and to my family and friends for always supporting me!

Natalie Kuelker (Ensemble) is very excited to be in her 10th show with GCPA! Recent credits include: Soloist in Godspell (GCPA) and Kathy Selden in Singin' in the Rain Jr. (Ignite Theater Company). She has also been a part of the GCPA Show Starters for 2 years. She takes voice lessons, and has studied tap, musical theater dance, jazz, modern, and musical theater performance at GCPA. In her spare time she plays piano and loves to watch golden age movies.

Amelie Lock (Lucy) is thrilled to be back at GCPA in 13! She was last seen as Louisa Von Trapp in The Sound of Music (Muny), Young Molly in Jake’s Women (Moonstone Theatre Co.) and recently voiced the role of Ribberta in DreamWork’s Madagascar - A Little Wild. Other favorite roles include Baby June in Gypsy and Footloose at the Muny, Pollyanna in Pollyanna, Gracie Shinn in The Music Man and A Christmas Story: The Musical. Emerson Mattia (Archie) is absolutely thrilled to be in the cast of 13. Past GCPA productions include Something Rotten, Legally Blonde Jr., Adams Family Jr., Dear Edwina and The Music Man. Emerson is happy to be going into his Freshman year at Maplewood Richmond Heights High School this fall. When he's not sweating his homework, Emerson enjoys singing in the StLCC Young Men's Chorus, playing tennis and golf, traveling, and playing F1 Racing.

He would like to thank all of his family and friends for support and to remind everyone to give each other what they need!

Finley Mohr (Ensemble) is an upcoming 7th grader. Credits include Wednesday Addams in The Addams Family at her middle school. At GCPA, Finley has been an Orphan and US Duffy in Annie, Soloist in Godspell, Kelli in Dear Edwina, Ensemble in Flat Stanley Online Edition and John Darling in Peter Pan Jr. Finley enjoys horseback riding, reading, and of course, all things musical theatre. She takes dance at GCPA and voice with Kristianna Dilworth.

Delaney McCoy (Ensemble, u/s Lucy), a rising 9th grader, is honored to be a part of this amazing cast! Kalia Pagano (Patrice) is a rising 10th grader. This is her 17th show with GCPA! Some of her GCPA favorites are A Little Princess (Lottie), Titanic, Matilda, 42nd Street, Legally Blonde Jr. (Margot, u/s Brooke) and Something Rotten (Chef/Ensemble). Outside of GCPA she has played Young Cosette in Les Misérables at Chaminade, Young Julia in St. Louis University Theatre's production of James Joyce's The Dead, and she recently played Small Allison in Take Two Production's Fun Home. She has been taking dance and musical theatre classes since she was 4 and has pretty much been singing since before she could speak. She plays clarinet in her school's Wind Ensemble and also plays ukulele. Next up she will be in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at the Muny. Much love to Mom, Dad and brother Xavier!

Celia Medeiros (Ensemble), an 8th grader, is excited to be a part of 13. Credits include: Peisinoe (Kirkwood Youth Theater), Scarecrow in Wizard of Oz (HCA), Ensemble in Godspell and Wizard of Oz (Crestwood Community Theater). She studies voice with Lisa Casciola, Irish Dance at Clark Academy, and also sings in the school choir and writes her own music while playing the piano and ukulele.

Kate Schuler (Cassie) is thrilled to be part of 13! Kate is a rising 8th grader and has performed in shows with GCPA, Shooting Star Productions and Ignite Theatre Company. Her favorite roles are Star-to-Be in Annie and Ensemble in Something Rotten. She is excited to perform in Footloose, Jr. and with the Arch City Kids Theatre Troupe later this summer. She is grateful to Paul, Lori and Stephanie for including her in this incredible cast, and to her voice teacher, Lisa Fahey, for helping her grow as a person and as a performer.

Who's Who Will Schulte (Eddie), a rising 7th grader, is so excited to make his second GCPA appearance as Eddie in 13. Favorite past credits include being a part of GCPA’s Annie, Tillman Elementary's Willy Wonka as Charlie, Shrewsbury Theater's Mary Poppins as Michael Banks, and Ignite's Shrek as Young Shrek. When not researching Broadway musicals and studying their music, Will loves to play with his friends, swim, ski and enjoy time with his family. He's honored to be a part of this production of 13 just 3 weeks before he turns 13 himself! Will very much looks forward to future shows and being a part of GCPA’s Show Starters this fall.

Audrey Schulz (Ensemble, u/s Malcom) is ecstatic to be in her 14th GCPA production!

Past favorite GCPA roles have included Duffy in Annie, Chutney in Legally Blonde Jr., Young Jane Andrews and US Anne in Anne of Green Gables, and Alice in Matilda.

Zain Thomas (Simon) is 13 years old and will be entering the world of Middle School!

This is Zain's third GCPA production and he has been having a blast being a part of 13 The Musical! Zain's other credits include Ensemble in GCPA's recent production of Annie, the roles of Harry & Simon in GCPA's virtual production of Dear Edwina and Colehouse Walker Jr.'s son in MICDS' production of Ragtime. Zain thanks the directors, cast and crew of 13 for this experience and his family for their support!

Rebecca Wirthlin (Ensemble, u/s Cassie, Charlotte, Molly), an upcoming 8th grader, is excited to be in her 4th GCPA production and a part of 13 the Musical!

Previous credits include: Godspell (Featured Soloist), Peter Pan Jr. (Captain Hook), and The Music Man (Ensemble).

Becca studies voice at Sarah Wirthlin Studios and is excited to be a new member of the 22-23 GCPA Show Starters Team! “Thank you to my family for supporting me in my theater journey!”

Dan Wolfe (Rabbi, Assistant Stage Manager) is so excited to be back on stage with GCPA in the production of 13. Favorite credits from previous productions include Something Rotten with GCPA, A Christmas Story with The Repertory Theatre St. Louis, and Evita with Tuscany Theatre Company.

Recently Dan played Rooster in Annie with GCPA and loved every minute of it! Dan is a high school student who enjoys singing and acting whenever possible. Thank you to all of the staff and the entire cast and crew for making this experience a great one! Thank you to his family and friends for their constant support!

Asher Woodward (Brett) is so excited to play the role of Brett in 13, his first production with GCPA. He is going into 7th grade and is a member of the Stages Triple Threats. Credits include George Banks in Mary Poppins Jr., Rapunzel’s Prince in Into the Woods Jr., and Trunchbull in Matilda Jr. at Stages Performing Arts Academy. He was nominated for an Arts for Life Best Performance Award for his portrayal of Christian Bechdel in Fun Home with Take Two Productions last October. Asher studies voice with Gabrielle Stahlschmidt and loves to create original animations.

Later this summer, he will attend the animation program at Interlochen Arts Camp. Break a leg, cast of 13!

Who's Who CREATIVE TEAM Paul Pagano (Director and Executive Director), a native of St. Louis, received his BA in Drama from Washington University and Masters in Theatre Education from Fontbonne University. As a proud member of Actors’ Equity Association since 2001, Paul has had the opportunity to work with the Guthrie Theatre, Utah Shakespeare Festival, Children’s Theatre Company, Chanhassen Dinner Theatre, Hey City Theatre, the MUNY, STAGES St. Louis, HotCity Theatre, and many others. As a director and fight choreographer, in addition to 19 productions (and counting) at GCPA, credits include the MUNY, Washington University, Fontbonne University, Missouri All-State Theatre, and Kirkwood Theatre Guild. As an instructor, Paul has taught at GCPA, COCA, St. Louis University High School, and STAGES Performing Arts Academy. Love to wife, Lori, and kids, Xavier and Kalia!

Lori Barrett-Pagano (Music Director and Managing Director) is a Co-Founder and Managing Director of GCPA. She earned her Master of Music in Vocal Performance from Washington University in St. Louis.

She has been teaching voice for over 25 years – currently as an adjunct voice faculty at St. Louis University, as well as voice and classes at GCPA. Professionally, Lori has performed with The MUNY, STAGES St. Louis, Union Avenue Opera, Echo Theatre, Spotlight Theatre, MainStage Musicals and SIUE Summer Showbiz. Regional credits include The Minnesota Opera, North Star Opera, Minneapolis Musical Theatre, Theatre in the Round, and The Gilbert & Sullivan Very Light Opera Company. Lori is so proud of the hard work and dedication of this amazing cast. Love to her husband Paul, and her children Xavier and Kalia.

Stephanie Fox (Choreographer & Artistic Director) Originally from Oklahoma, Stephanie graduated from the University of Central Oklahoma with a Bachelor of Music: Music Theatre and continued her studies independently in New York. As a proud member of Actors’ Equity (Stephanie Long) she has performed regionally, on National

Tour and in New York. In St. Louis, Stephanie has taught at COCA, STAGES, and choreographed for 8 years at Chaminade College Prep along with numerous professional choreography credits. She is humbled to work with the amazing young actors that pass through GCPA’s doors. Here's to new adventures and staying connected. This one is dedicated to my sweet Veruca. Living her best life with a 3rd broken windshield.

Lisi Levy (Stage Manager) (she/her) is an actor, director, and teaching artist from Saint Louis, MO. After graduating from Clayton High School, she attended Oklahoma City University where she graduated summa cum laude with a BFA in Acting and a minor in Directing. As a GCPA alum, Lisi has loved returning to the studio throughout the years. The GCPA community has been an outlet for support and joy during Lisi's career and she is thrilled to be working as a teacher and stage manager this season. She looks forward to directing Footloose Youth Edition this summer! As an artist and person, Lisi values community and empathy above all. She strives to contribute to strong ensembles which promote inclusivity and belonging in their theatrical practices. Lisi has absolutely loved working with this group of talented artists and cannot wait for you to see their hard work come to life onstage. Congrats to the cast of 13!

Anna Wright (Assistant Director) is going to be a high school senior this coming fall and is extremely excited for her first assistant directing position at GCPA. Her favorite past acting credits include: Carrie in Carrie (SPAA), Sophie in Mamma Mia (LHS), and Georgette in Amélie (GCPA). She is also a part of the Muny Teen Troupe and will be appearing in the teen ensemble of Legally Blonde there this summer. She would like to thank the wonderful creative team and all of the young, talented actors for making this such a great experience.

Who's Who BAND Aaron Brown (Guitar) is a local guitarist known for playing genres such as blues, soul, rock and jazz. He enjoys performing for musicals and received a degree in Music Performance from Webster University. This is his second show with GCPA. Michael Frazier (Keys / Conductor) is a St. Louis based accompanist, teacher, and music director. He is a graduate of Cedarville University where he received his BA in Music Performance and SIUE where he received his MA in Piano Perfomance/Accompanying. He currently serves as accompanist for the Ladue school district and the St. Louis Children’s Choirs.

He can also be found music directing shows at Missouri Baptist University as well as music directing and accompanying for several theaters in the St. Louis metro area.

Fletcher Leonard (Drums) is a percussionist from Alton, Illinois. He is a rising sophomore at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, studying with worldrenowned percussionist Michael Burritt. He will graduate in 2025 with a Bachelor’s in Percussion Performance and Music Education. Fletcher was selected as the Wilkes Fellow for the Lancaster Festival Orchestra in 2020, and was the principal percussionist in ILMEA Honors Orchestra.

Throughout his career, he has played in many shows with Alton High School and Riverbend Theater. Fletcher has also played with groups such as the St. Louis Youth Symphony Orchestra and the Alton Municipal Band. He is thrilled to have another opportunity to play for live theater!

Brody Macias (Guitar), age seventeen, is a student at Alton High School and has been playing the guitar for six years. Brody is very active in his schools music program, as he is a Drum Major for the marching band, bass clarinetist for Wind Ensemble, guitarist for pit orchestra and jazz band, and violinist for Symphonic Orchestra and chamber strings. Other than music, Brody enjoys watching birds and taking care of his plants.

G Schmiedeke (Bass) is primarily a violinist, but loves to play the bass. G plays bass in the Rockwood Summit Jazz band and Rockwood Summits pep band and Pit orchestra. On violin, G has participated in the SLSYO, Missouri All State Orchestra, All Suburban, Rockwood Summits symphonic orchestra, and other various groups. G also plays in Summits Marching Band and Concert Orchestra. G hopes to double major in performance and music education, along with getting a minor ethnomusicology in college.
