Hey BlueMile family! Attention, Attention to all publishers and songwriters. We recently came across an article by digital publisher Mandy Dalugdug. You can find it at www.musicbusinessworldwide.com titled, “Songwriters and Publishers to Receive Nearly $400M Payout After Streaming Royalty Ruling in the US”. We hope this news brings a smile to your face. Let's summarize this article. The decision follows a long battle between the creative minds and streaming services. The Copyrights Royalty Board (CRB) has determined that major streaming platforms, such as Spotify, Amazon Music, YouTube, and Pandora, were to increase royalty rates for songwriters and publishers for the reproduction and distribution of their musical work under CRB III. The CRB has recommended an increase from 10.5% to 15.1% for CRB III, covering the 5-year span from 2018 to 2022. Now, how long have we been peering over our glasses and making satirical comments about our royalty checks? A long time! Well, we have secured the bag, and it’s a fantastic!
So, how will the songwriters and publishers receive their payments? For the years 2021 to 2022, The Mechanical Licensing Collective (MLC) will issue any owed back payments for streaming royalties (mechanical and performance royalties). For the years 2018 to 2019, the DSP or their third party will handle the back payments. Either way, rest assured if you are owed any royalty payments, you should receive them soon. Can someone say, “Money cometh to me”! During our research on this royalty increase matter, we’ve found out that the CRB reviews royalty rates every five years to ensure fair compensation for songwriters and publishers. Now that we know this, it's worth mentioning that CRB IV has also been determined for 2023 to 2027. We are likely to see further increases in royalty rates. Yay for us!
Now, what are our responsibilities, as songwriters and publishers, to secure our monies? We are happy you asked. It is essential for us to be diligent in attending to our business as songwriters and/or publishers. Conduct your research. Ask questions. How will you receive credit and payment for your work if it's not registered? The importance of being registered with a Performance Rights Office (PRO) like BMI, ASCAP, or SESAC, and joining other music affiliates such as the MLC, Sound Exchange, and CCLI, underscores the importance of actively managing your business as a songwriter and/or publisher.

Is an esteemed Woman of Faith who operates in several offices, including Prophetess, Seer, Minister, Evangelist, and Apostle. Her walk in Christ started at a young age, being born within a family of Prophets, Prophetesses, Ministers of Music, Ministers, Pastors, Deacons, Missionaries, and worshippers, and Prophetic Praise Dancers. Coming from a Baptist background, she was introduced to the Apostolic faith in 2008, believing in Acts 2:38, the evidence of the tongue, and walking in spirit and in truth.
Despite undergoing mentally and verbally abusive relationships, she remained steadfast in God, and He continued to strengthen her and reveal more of who she was in Him. She was then baptized again in 2008 under the leadership of Pastor Yvonnda Garner and Pastor Hall in Detroit, Michigan. Under this great Woman of God, Apostle Dr. Darinda's gifts were further activated, and she began to operate fully in the office of a Seer, teaching Sunday School, Intercessory, and working the altar. The Woman of God began to see who she was and started doing outreach ministry outside the four walls of the church, becoming a Minister of Greater Works Deliverance International Ministry, believing in Healing and Deliverance, and the power of laying on of hands.
Apostle Dr. Darinda continued to reside with her church, Greater Works Deliverance International Ministry, with Apostle Dr. Teresa A. Moton as her spiritual mother, until she relocated to Tucson, Arizona, and established her Women Ministry named Beautiful Divine International Ministry. She works with adult women and teen girls who are broken, abandoned, feeling defeated, physically and mentally abused all across the world. She is motivated, encouraging, and courageous in her faith with doing the work of God, and her heart is always excited about doing the work of God. Currently, she is married to Chief Apostle Dr. Arnold Burrell, who affirmed her as an Apostle. They have their church in Romulus Michigan called the Remnant Apostolic Center and their Fellowship called Remnant Apostolic Fellowship, and she serves as the Vice Presider Prelate. So, you are one who either grew up singing in the church or comes from a lineage of singing parents and so music is in your DNA. Good for you! You enjoy singing, it has become a hobby and going from place-to-place singing has brought you much joy and accolades from friends and family. In time this hobby begins to land a few gigs and you are ecstatic that your hobby has evolved into providing a few dollars here and there. In this phase, and for the most part, creating and sharing your music is a labor of love, something you are prepared to offer with no consideration for compensation. Monetizing this activity has not crossed your mind and if it does, the thought currently occupies a very low rank on your list of priorities.
Epiphany! You wake up one day with the grand idea, “I should take this hobby to the next level, I should make a career of my singing and musical abilities, I should make this my means of livelihood.” This is the watershed moment! This is the moment that calls for a 180-degree turnaround in your focus, priorities, and approach to this activity. Caveat -Be careful not to fall into the trap of making a full 360-degree turn as you will be back where you started. Pardon me, I could not resist making this tongue-in-cheek observation. So, your music is now no longer a hobby with the secondary benefit of earning a few dollars, but now a primary career objective with the secondary benefit of it also being your treasured hobby. A very enviable position to be in where your work is also your play!
Small entrepreneurs start businesses for several reasons. Some of the most common are:
I am tired of working for ‘the man.’
I want to be my own boss.
I have come into a bit of inheritance and would like to start a business.
I have a particular skill that I think can be an income-earner.
Unfortunately, seldom is the reason that a potentially marketable opportunity has been identified and a decision is made to capitalize on it, which would imply responding to an existing demand as opposed to an “if we build it, they will come” approach.
So back to the epiphany. There is now John the musician and John the businessman and this is where the challenges arise in identifying and conforming to the separate roles, obligations, and responsibilities of the two Johns. Quite often, the required shift in mindset, focus and strategic business approach lags and becomes an albatross, stifling the growth and development of this new business initiative.
To think that your hobby-driven approach and mentality will in time somehow miraculously evolve into sound business practices is akin to waiting on the darn mango tree to produce a hefty crop of oranges. It isn’t going to happen!
The epiphany, if it is to migrate from the comfort and safety of being just a pleasant dream to becoming a realistic tangible business proposition, requires that the proverbial John make the transition which requires engaging basic first principles of sound business development and financial management practices, and where those principles are at odds with the modus operandi of a hobby, be prepared to part ways with those behaviors and practices.
The operationalization of this shift in mindset is played out through engaging in best business practices such as cashflow management, budgeting, marketing, promotion etc. however the fundamental shift must first occur in the psyche. This shift cannot be gradual and ad hoc relying on the winds of good fortune, but should be dramatic, intentional, and purposeful. Only then will the rigorous demands of starting and growing a new business be met with a readiness to respond to the call.
Then, and only then, will the epiphany of the possibility of transforming a hobby into a lucrative business become reality, and what started as a dream evolve into a promising career.
