A Welcome to Traverse City On behalf of the GCBAA Board of Directors, welcome to Traverse City, Michigan, for our 2026 GCBAA Summer Meeting.

Whether this is your first Summer Meeting or you've been attending for years, thank you for taking the time to be here.

These few days together are one of the highlights of our year, providing an opportunity to reconnect with friends, strengthen relationships, learn from one another, and continue building an industry that is stronger because we work together.

When the Board began discussing locations for this year's meeting, Traverse City quickly rose to the top of the list. It represents so much of what makes our industry special. The region is home to outstanding golf facilities, beautiful natural scenery, and a community that values the game of golf and the people who make it possible. Beyond the incredible courses, Traverse City offers an environment where members can step away from their daily responsibilities, spend time with colleagues and families, and enjoy everything northern Michigan has to offer. We hope you'll take advantage of your time here, whether it's exploring the area, enjoying the local hospitality, or simply catching up with fellow members.

Events like this don't happen without an incredible team working behind the scenes.

I'd first like to thank my fellow Board members for their continued leadership, ideas, and countless hours of volunteer service throughout the year. Our Board remains committed to ensuring the GCBAA continues to provide meaningful programs, educational opportunities, and member benefits that strengthen our association and our industry.

A special thank you goes to our Meetings Committee—Matt Lohmann, Glen Olson, and Chris Lineberger—for helping shape this week's program. From selecting educational topics and planning networking opportunities to working through countless logistical details, their commitment has helped make this meeting one we're all proud to attend.

I'd also like to recognize our outstanding GCBAA staff. Justin Apel and Mychelle Thompson continue to raise the bar for our association with their professionalism, creativity, and tireless dedication. Dennis and Nancy Seelhoff have once again provided invaluable support in preparing for this event, and we're excited to welcome JoDee Paulsen and Hilarie Seelhoff, whose hard work behind the scenes has already made a tremendous difference. Like so many successful GCBAA events, much of what they've accomplished will go unnoticed—which is exactly how you know they've done an exceptional job.

Throughout my time as President, I've spoken often about the strength of our association. It's never been about one company or one individual. It's about hundreds of members working together, sharing ideas, helping one another, and continuing to raise the standards of our profession. That spirit is on full display during our Summer Meeting, and I encourage you to make the most of every conversation, every educational session, and every opportunity to connect with someone new.

I hope you leave Traverse City with new ideas, new friendships, and renewed enthusiasm for the work we all do. Most importantly, I hope you enjoy your week.

Welcome to Traverse City!

On behalf of our entire GCBAA staff, thank you for joining us for the 2026 GCBAA Summer Meeting. We know that taking time away from your projects, employees, customers, and families isn't always easy, which makes your investment in this association even more meaningful. We truly appreciate you being here.

Each Summer Meeting is unique, and that's intentional. Our goal is to create more than just another conference. We want to bring our members together in destinations that showcase great golf, encourage meaningful conversations, and provide opportunities to strengthen the relationships that make the GCBAA such a special organization.

Traverse City checked every box.

From championship golf courses and spectacular views of Lake Michigan to a vibrant downtown and welcoming community, this region represents many of the qualities our members appreciate both professionally and personally. We hope you'll enjoy everything northern Michigan has to offer while spending time with colleagues, longtime friends, and new members of the GCBAA family.

While you'll see the finished product this week, what you won't see are the countless hours of preparation that began many months ago. Every educational session, golf event, networking opportunity, transportation schedule, registration detail, meal, and meeting room has been carefully planned with one goal in mind—creating an experience that is valuable, enjoyable, and worthy of your time.

I'm fortunate to work alongside an incredible team that makes that possible.

My sincere thanks go to GCBAA President Jon O'Donnell and our Board of Directors for their guidance and leadership throughout the planning process. Their vision continues to push our association forward while ensuring we never lose sight of what matters most—serving our members.

I'd also like to recognize our Meetings Committee—Matt Lohmann, Glen Olson, and Chris Lineberger—for their dedication in helping develop this year's program. Their ideas, feedback, and willingness to volunteer their time have been instrumental in making this week's meeting a reality.

Finally, I'd like to thank the incredible GCBAA staff and support team who have worked tirelessly behind the scenes. Mychelle Thompson continues to do an outstanding job coordinating countless moving pieces while keeping everything organized and on schedule. Dennis and Nancy Seelhoff have once again dedicated an incredible amount of time preparing materials, coordinating logistics, and helping wherever needed. We're also excited to have JoDee Paulsen and Hilarie Seelhoff joining the team this year. Their enthusiasm, hard work, and willingness to jump in wherever needed have been invaluable throughout the planning process.

If you've attended a GCBAA event before, you know that our staff wears many hats throughout the week. Whether it's answering questions, solving last-minute challenges, helping with registration, directing you to the next event, or simply making sure you have what you need, we're here to help.

Please don't hesitate to stop any of us if there's anything we can do to make your experience better.

I also encourage you to take advantage of everything this week has to offer. Attend the education sessions, visit with our partners and exhibitors, reconnect with old friends, introduce yourself to someone new, and take time to enjoy the incredible setting around us. Some of the most valuable conversations you'll have this week won't happen in a meeting room—they'll happen over breakfast, on the golf course, during an evening reception, or while exploring Traverse City together.

Meet Our Summer Meeting Mascot

Bogey the Bigfoot While there is no historical or scientific evidence that Bigfoot inhabits Michigan, the legend has become closely associated with the state’s vast forests, remote wilderness, and rich tradition of outdoor folklore. Northern Michigan, including the forests surrounding Traverse City, provides the kind of landscape that naturally inspires stories of mysterious creatures—dense hardwood forests, secluded trails, wetlands, and miles of undeveloped land where imagination can flourish.

Traverse City sits near the heart of this wilderness, surrounded by the Pere Marquette State Forest, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, and countless miles of wooded terrain extending throughout the northern Lower Peninsula. For generations, hunters, hikers, campers, and anglers have shared tales of unusual footprints, unexplained sounds, and fleeting glimpses of large figures moving through the trees. While none of these accounts have been scientifically verified, they have become part of Michigan’s modern folklore.

The Bigfoot legend in Michigan is also rooted in a broader tradition of storytelling.

Indigenous cultures throughout North America have long told stories of large, humanlike beings living in the wilderness. Although these traditions vary greatly among tribes and should not be confused with the modern “Bigfoot” phenomenon, they contributed to a cultural landscape in which mysterious forest beings were already part of regional oral history. During the twentieth century, popular media transformed these ideas into the now-famous Bigfoot or Sasquatch legend, and Michigan became one of many states where enthusiasts reported sightings.

Traverse City’s identity as a destination for outdoor recreation further reinforces the connection. Visitors come to experience the region’s forests, lakes, trails, and natural beauty, making Bigfoot an entertaining symbol of adventure and exploration. Local businesses, events, and tourism promotions occasionally embrace the mythical creature in a lighthearted way, using it to celebrate the mystery and wonder of northern Michigan’s wilderness rather than as a claim that the creature actually exists.

Today, Bigfoot serves as a cultural icon that represents curiosity, the spirit of exploration, and the enduring appeal of Michigan’s wild places. Whether encountered on a novelty T-shirt, a hiking trail souvenir, or in stories shared around a campfire near Traverse City, Bigfoot has become a playful reminder that some of the best parts of the outdoors are the mysteries that keep people exploring.

As just the third executive director in the long history of the American Society of Golf Course Architects, Hunki Yun guides the mission, direction and activities of this member-based organization, which is comprised of qualified, highly skilled professionals who design golf courses that provide fun, memorable playing experiences to golfers around the world.

In addition to serving the interests of ASGCA members, Hunki works with companies and other organizations to advance the industry and improve the overall health of the game.

Prior to his current role, Hunki held leadership positions at the USGA and was an awardwinning writer and editor for several publications, including Golf Digest, Golf Magazine and Links Magazine.

Hunki resides in Greenville, S.C., with his wife and two children.

Paul L. Carter, CGCS, was elected president at the 2026 Annual Meeting in Orlando. He was first elected to the GCSAA Board of Directors in 2019 in San Diego.

Carter is the superintendent at The Bear Trace at Harrison Bay in Harrison, Tenn. He previously served as director of agronomy for the Tennessee Golf Trail, a division of Tennessee State Parks.

A 33-year GCSAA member, he is a member of the Tennessee GCSA and a member and past president of the Tennessee Turfgrass Association. He has served on several GCSAA committees and as a chapter delegate.

Carter is well-known for the environmental programs at Bear Trace. He was the overall winner in the 2013 GCSAA/Golf Digest Environmental Leaders in Golf Awards and in 2015 was honored with GCSAA’s President’s Award for Environmental Stewardship.

He graduated from Auburn University in 1993 with a degree in agriculture sciences.

He lives in Apison, Tenn., with his wife, Melissa. Their daughter, Hannah, is a graduate student at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn.

J. Rhett Evans is the chief executive office of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America where he guides the business and overall strategy of the association and upholds the mission of GCSAA by serving its members, advancing their profession and enhancing the game of golf and the communities where it’s played. Evans is in his 16th year with GCSAA. He strategically leads the association toward its primary goals and objectives concerning membership, education, advocacy, the environment and the GCSAA Foundation.

He has served two terms as chairman of the board of the American Golf Industry Coalition and currently serves on its executive board and the board of the World Golf Foundation.

Evans is a native of Prescott, Ariz. He and his wife, Colleen, have a daughter Caite, and a son, Seth.

Hammon is the superintendent at Traverse City (Mich.) Country Club, where he has worked for 26 years. He was previously superintendent at Indianwood Golf and Country Club near Lake Orion, Mich, and was assistant superintendent at Crystal Downs Country Club in Frankfort, Mich. Hammon earned a turfgrass management certificate from Michigan State University.

A 37-year GCSAA member, Hammon is a past president of the Michigan GCSA and has served as both a delegate at the Chapter Delegates Meeting and GCSAA Grassroots Ambassador. He also served on the USGA Green Section Committee for 20 years.

ISCO has a long history of recognizing and building on opportunity. In 1962, founder Jim Kirchdorfer, Sr. was running his family’s hardware store in the heart of Louisville, KY, when he recognized a need and developed a solution.
