Saddle Up, the Golf Industry Show is Riding into Texas How does the saying go, everything’s bigger in Texas? Well that couldn’t be more true as we approach this year’s Golf Industry Show (GIS), scheduled the week of February 5th. The Golf Industry Show features the largest trade show in golf course management. It’s the adult version of Disney World for golf course builders, superintendents, owners, architects and club managers. If you’re new to the industry and have yet to attend a GIS, put it on your bucket list.

GCBAA is excited to be a Show partner and has worked closely with the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) and National Golf Course Owners Association of America (NGCOA) to give attendees what will hopefully be their most memorable GIS experience yet.

In years past, GCBAA has hosted its own Opening Reception prior to opening day of the Trade Show with over 500 members and industry professionals in attendance. This reception has become the signature event for opening night and will be even bigger and better for 2018. Details below!

New and Expanded “Inside the Ropes” Coming to the Golf Industry Show Floor We invite you to join us Inside the Ropes! GCBAA is excited to partner with the Golf Industry Show to feature the work and expertise of our membership throughout the build of this project. This new and improved VIP experience will include a 28,000-square foot interactive space featuring bunker and equipment displays, irrigation education, golf course dog demonstrations, and the GCSAA TV Stage.

Inside the Ropes aims to provide GIS attendees with a different experience than they might find in a typical trade show setting. This realistic golf course design, construction and maintenance area gives attendees a unique space to interact with colleagues and exhibiting industry partners.

The 2018 show will focus on enhanced education presentations and demonstrations, as well as provide ample opportunity for networking. This area will not only include the Inside the Ropes green space, but also house GIS registration, the GCSAA TV Stage, the EIFG Silent Auction, the Golf Course Builders Association of America exhibit, food and beverage areas, the merchandise and bookstore, and exhibitor booths with a specific focus on design, construction and golf course renovation projects.

President’s & Executive Director’s Perspective It does not seem that long ago that the office was asking for my first President Perspective article and having to send frequent “reminders” to make the deadline. In the last issue, our Executive Director, Justin Apel, and I were traveling together so we did a joint message. For this issue, we are traveling together again and since he is good with words and more importantly, faster on the keyboard – consolidated article take two.

Justin and I are wrapping up two back–to-back trips; one was the annual South Florida Regional Meeting at The Breakers Resort and the other was being guests of fellow board member Chris Caccavale with Caterpillar on the Steel Wings Duck Hunting trip. We were both discussing our history with GCBAA and thought it carried a good theme for my departing message. Many of you probably don’t remember that I ran for the board several times before being appointed to fill a vacancy. Now I’m wrapping up my presidency which has been one of the highlights of my professional career. Looking back, I feel like we have come a long way as Justin shared his excitement and appreciation of how many of you have stepped up to offer help for 2018. We talked about the power of a volunteer and how important it is to take advantage of someone’s willingness to help. After our recent election, we divided up the list of candidates and made calls. While some were exciting to make as we congratulated those elected to the Board, it is always humbling having to tell a volunteer who is willing to serve that they were not elected. I always remind them that I was in their shoes once and it took me some time before getting the nod; in fact, I had to be appointed rather than elected. The point being, we have plenty of projects and committees for everyone to be involved with and look forward to seeing your names on a future ballot. Thank you for your willingness to serve.

Having worked closely with Justin and the staff for the past several years as a member of the Executive Board and as president, it should come as no surprise that we are extremely blessed to have a team that represents our association and members in such a professional and personal manner.

Many of us have seen firsthand how well they handle themselves and represent our organization, however it is amazing how personal they are with us and how they have created so many relationships. I was reminded of this when I watched how Samantha, Justin, and many of our fellow members honored our friend Mike Roach at the opening reception in South Florida. Mike’s wife Cheryl joined us and Justin and Sam introduced me to her. She was extremely grateful for the outpouring of support by many of you during this difficult time for her and her family with Mike’s passing. During the reception, many of Mike’s friends stood up and told stories and encouraged all of us to live by Mike’s example.

Mike was a good friend to many of us and despite challenges that come along in business, at the end of the day we are all in this industry together and need to help one another along the way. I shared the story of how Mike sent a check to support someone he barely knew in a time of disaster. He was an extremely generous man to his family and the industry that he loved. I think we can all agree how special it is that we are part of a group like the GCBAA that not only provides all the perks of a trade organization, but most importantly a second family of friends and relationships that go beyond the day to day business dealings.

There is no better time to reminisce about old times than when you are standing in three feet of water in a duck blind. Chris, Justin, and I told stories about past meetings and events with a lot of good laughs.

Justin is the first to say how he cannot believe he is in his 12th year with this association and how much has changed. I know how much he appreciates the group’s willingness to adjust to the times. Let’s face it, the past 10 years have presented its fair share of challenges. Justin joined GCBAA in the final year before the recession and basically saw one good year in the industry before the bottom dropped out of the housing market and many of us moved into survival mode. It has been tough for all of us to witness the change in the industry and the many who needed to move on to other lines of work. We know it may never be the “hay days” like we saw in the mid-1990s or even the bump in 2006-2007.

Despite that, our board is proud of where our organization is today and the willingness of our staff to keep the wheels turning. Nobody knew what it would take to keep the organization alive, but we all knew we needed the GCBAA. We have been in countless meetings brainstorming ways to grow member benefits and keep the organization operating. The one thing we knew at the end of each discussion was we could not keep doing the same thing over and over again. If you ask Justin or the staff what they are doing in the office, be prepared for a lengthy conversation.

It is amazing to see how many committees and volunteers are engaged with the staff to keep rolling out new projects and ideas. Justin tells me that the best thing the board has accomplished of late is the execution of the Strategic Plan discussion we held nearly three years ago. From that discussion, we set goals for the office and as president I felt it important to give the staff the tools and support they needed to reach those goals.

We knew from having many of you involved that the organization needed to keep offering more education and tools for our members as well as work closer with our allied organizations involved in golf. We were not certain how to get there, but working together today we offer more education and networking as well as have better relationships with our allied organizations than ever before. We are involved in countless opportunities with fellow organizations and keep growing our education offering at our existing meetings and new regional events.

Rather than having Justin and me list all of the exciting new programs coming up and updating you on current projects, we will let the newsletter articles speak for themselves. Please join us in congratulating Ken Melrose on receiving the Don Rossi Award as well as thanking outgoing board members Stephanie Zimmerman, Dennis Wagner, and Frank Warden. I cannot thank Rick Boylan enough for his support to me as immediate past-president and I look forward to supporting our incoming president, Pat Karnick, and all the new board members who are seated in February. I cannot offer enough thanks to Justin, Samantha, and Stephanie for their hard work and dedication to our organization and Foundation. Finally, thanks to all of you who have supported the organization; whether sponsoring, volunteering, or even as simple as your membership renewal…we are all in this together!

Foundation Update A fundamental goal of the Foundation has always been to introduce children to the great game of golf and instill in those children the joy and sense of accomplishment that inspires them to become lifetime players.

Thanks to the ongoing generosity of GCBAA members and the outside support of several key members of the industry, our Foundation has an extraordinary opportunity to implement new initiatives directed at expanding our game.

In addition to supporting our existing Sticks for Kids programs and funding new starts, we have recently forged a new partnership with the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Foundation. The GCBAA Foundation has entered into this partnership for a number of critical reasons. First, each of their programs is led by a volunteer certified LPGA teaching professional which we believe will establish the fundamental skills that help make golf fun to new players. Second, their volunteer support staff at each location is thoroughly vetted to make certain the girls learn in a safe environment. Lastly, the LPGA Foundation has the structure and support staff necessary to monitor the programs in terms of current participants and their ongoing commitment to playing the game.

Their Foundation currently operates 415 Girls Golf Programs that provide golfing opportunities to more than 50,000 young ladies annually.

Together, the two Foundations, with significant assistance from the United States Golf Association (USGA), will fund and launch an additional 75 programs this year and hopefully a like amount in each of the next several years. The programs will be co-branded with recognition given to each of the three organizations involved.

Your GCBAA Foundation is also continuing to explore ways to extend Sticks for Kids reach into public schools. Whether it is through physical education programs or by supporting competitive teams, we feel there is a great opportunity to develop more lifetime players. More information will be provided regarding this initiative in subsequent newsletters.

The Foundation is embarking on these new programs for two primary reasons – 1) your generosity has provided the means to fund the expansion and 2) growth in our standard Sticks for Kids programs has stagnated. The stagnation can be attributed to the closing of some affiliated courses and the consolidation of some of the programs. Despite these market pressures, 16 new Sticks for Kids programs were started this past year and we anticipate that many new programs will start again this year.

In addition to your financial support, the Foundation would like to enlist more personal assistance from each member. The locations of each of our Sticks for Kids sites will be posted on the website https://www.gcbaa.org/ Foundation/Sticks-for-Kids with the sincere hope that each member will consider making an annual pilgrimage (or two) to assist in monitoring a program nearby and provide suggestions on what we can do to improve.

Sticks for Kids Partnering with LPGA*USGA Girls Golf Program in 2018 Lincoln, NE (Jan 3. 2018) –The Golf Course Builders Association of America (GCBAA) Foundation is expanding its Sticks for Kids program by providing equipment and support to 75 new LPGA*USGA Girls Golf locations in 2018.

Since its establishment in 1997, the GCBAA Foundation has taken special interest in supporting underprivileged children by launching Sticks for Kids, a junior golf outreach program for youth aged 5-18. The program currently has 170 sites impacting the lives of over 20,000 children in 41 states and two international locations. Children are taught not only the fundamentals of the game, but also life lessons such as etiquette, integrity, sportsmanship, safety and respect for themselves and others.

“The partnership between Sticks for Kids and LPGA*USGA Girls Golf will offer proper equipment and instruction from certified teachers (PGA or LPGA) that provides a consistent, safe and welcoming environment,” said GCBAA Foundation President Tom Shapland.

“Our partnership with GCBAA will allow us to continue to provide the necessary tools and support to empower even more girls through the game of golf. EVERY girl should have this opportunity to participate in this engaging program,” said LPGA Foundation Director Kiernan Schindler.

LPGA*USGA Girls Golf, which began in Phoenix in 1989, specializes in providing a “girl-friendly” environment for juniors to learn and play the game of golf and the program has expanded to 420 sites across the United States, with more than 80 being added last year. Girls under the age of 18 represent the fastest growing sector in the U.S. golf population since 2010 and more than 70,000 girls were engaged in 2017 by the LPGA-USGA Girls Golf initiative.

The GCBAA Foundation will continue to support its existing Sticks for Kids programs by offering maintenance grants to active programs.

Maintenance grants allow established and active Sticks for Kids programs the opportunity to apply for replacement or additional equipment. Programs that have achieved high participation and usage rates will be given priority consideration, though all active programs will be eligible to apply in 2018.

Chuck Cloud Memorial Raffle The 2018 Chuck Cloud Memorial Raffle is officially underway! Tickets have arrived and it’s time to get your order in before they sell out.

Each year, the raffle helps the GCBAA Foundation raise money for Sticks for Kids, the Foundation’s junior golf development program that provides equipment and learning materials for children who may otherwise not have the opportunity to learn the game of golf. Today, there are more than 170 Sticks for Kids programs in the U.S. & abroad, impacting the lives of more than 30,000 children and disabled adults.

Tickets for the raffle are just $100 each, and only 500 tickets are being sold. The grand prize winner gets the choice of a 2018 Harley-Davidson Heritage Softail Classic or $10,000 cash. An additional 50 tickets will then be drawn to win a $100 cash prize.

GCBAA Attends and Exhibits at the Carolinas GCSAA Trade Show The GCBAA was pleased to once again attend and exhibit at the Carolinas Golf Course Superintendents Association annual Carolinas Trade Show November 14 – 15, 2017 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. We hosted a booth along with about 20 of our fellow members. Nearly 2000 attendees enjoyed the event; similar numbers that have not been realized since 2008 showing progress in the industry. Other key highlights of the event: Reference Golf Course Industry – “Positive Signs Abound at Carolinas GCSA Conference and Show” Published November 22, 2017.

Will Holroyd from Musgrove Mill Golf Club in Clinton, S.C., received the Distinguished Service Award, the Association’s highest honor. A veteran of more than 40 years in the superintendent profession, Holroyd commands a stellar reputation for his golf course conditioning, for mentoring superintendents and for his service to the industry. Holroyd was instrumental in securing funding that helped the Clemson program achieve its current heights. He was later guest of honor at a dinner presented in partnership with J. K. Morro and Sunbelt Rentals.

Riley Boyette, Assistant Golf Course Superintendent at Briar’s Creek Golf Club on Johns Island, S.C., successfully defended his title as Carolinas GCSA Golf Champion. Boyette, who won his first championship last year, shot a one-over par round of 73 at Wachesaw Plantation. A total of 341 golfers competed in several different formats across three separate courses presented in partnership with Toro and Smith Turf and Irrigation.

Outgoing Carolinas GCSA President, Adam Charles from The Preserve at Verdae in Greenville, S.C., won the sporting clay championship that attracted 41 shooters. Bayer and Carolina Fresh Farms were co-presenters of the event.

Peter Gerdon from Grandfather Golf and Country Club in Linville, N.C., was the grand prize winner in the 27-Hole Challenge presented in partnership with John Deere Golf, Greenville Turf and Tractor and Revels Turf and Tractor. Gerdon won $3,000 cash and Craig Walsh from Eagle Point Country Club in Wilmington, N.C., won $2,000 in the annual giveaway of nearly 20 prizes ranging from cash to YETI coolers, Go Pros and Costa sunglasses.

Miguel Adorno from Blackmoor Golf Club in Murrells Inlet, S.C., won the Rex Floyd Award as Turf Equipment Technician of the Year from the Turf Equipment Technicians Association of the Carolinas.

Nearly 140 people registered for the annual Fellowship Breakfast presented in partnership with Corbin Turf and Ornamental Supply and New Life Turf.

Attendees were universal in their praise of speaker Billy Bagwell, a Carolinas GCSA Director from Callawassie Island Club in Okatie, S.C., who spoke of his family’s journey while his wife Amanda overcame breast cancer.

A team from Clemson University won the annual Student Turf Bowl loosening the grip of Horry-Georgetown Technical College which had won the test of turfgrass knowledge in four of the previous five years.

The Breakers Resort Host of GCBAA South Florida Regional Meeting As staff sits on the aircraft at Chicago-Midway watching crewmembers de-ice the plane that’ll take us back to Nebraska, we can’t help but second guess our decision not to extend our stay through the weekend. Situated directly off the Atlantic coast, the well-known Breakers Resort was a most scenic destination for the GCBAA South Florida Regional Meeting this December. And while we’d like to think the education content drives attendees to each meeting, we’re beginning to think the Breakers had a little something to do with it. Regardless and undoubtedly, it was the most highly attended and interactive Regional Meeting your Association has hosted to date.

More than 110 GCBAA members, superintendents, architects and industry leaders met the week of December 12th in South Florida. In that time, we paid tribute to longtime GCBAA member Mike Roach at our Opening Reception, hosted a morning and afternoon of education, and took a group out on the water for a morning fishing charter.

It was great to see so many new faces, which is one of the many reasons we continue to integrate these regional events throughout the year. We are so proud to showcase the Association to prospective members, a few of which even signed up for membership that week. Please help us welcome The Pignato Group and Sullivan Electric & Pump, Inc. GCBAA Board of Directors Streamline Membership Categories During the annual GCBAA Summer Board Meeting the Board discussed ideas to streamline the membership categories for builder members by consolidating and adjusting the criteria needed for upgrading. As the GCBAA participates in allied industry events we have noticed in conversations and networking that our program has become cumbersome and confusing. The Board of Directors requested the GCBAA Membership Committee along with the Executive Board review the program to which they offered suggestions that the Board ultimately approved. The category changes were adopted for 2018-below are details of the new programs.

We thank the GCBAA Membership Committee for their work on the new structure; Chairman John McDonald, II, Klaus Ahlers, Rick Williamson, Mark Creighton, Joy Ramos, and Erik Christiansen.

The GCBAA eliminated the Associate Builder, Associate Renovation Builder, and Associate Irrigation Contractor categories as intermediate categories between application and the next level of membership.

The criteria to upgrade from the Applicant Level is to show the equivalent of two 18-hole projects within the last three years. Applicant members can apply to upgrade once a minimum of 18 months has passed from the time the company has become an Applicant Member or once the company can show they have been in business for at least three full years upon the date the upgrade would take effect. The Applicant Level Member must submit project references that have spanned the last three years for consideration. Sexual Harassment in Hollywood, Washington D.C. and Your Workplace

If the recent news out of Hollywood and Washington D.C. describing rampant sexual harassment allegations has not caused you to think about your company’s sexual harassment policies and procedures, hopefully this article will. Workplace harassment is on the minds of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (“EEOC”), especially after the media’s coverage of these high profile scandals. There are several steps that employers should take to promote a harassment free workplace as well as limit the liability exposure should an employee cross the line.

First, employers should have a written policy prohibiting harassment and discrimination. The policy needs to be clear, complete, and applicable to your company and its employees. In most cases, a policy from another company or one taken off the internet will not be sufficient and may lead to uncertainties when trying to enforce certain provisions. It is best to frequently review your policy to determine if it needs to be revised or supplemented due to changing workplace laws and regulations.

The policy itself should contain several pieces of information including a well-thought out complaint procedure. There should be at least two people, preferably of different genders and on different levels of the chain of command, designated to receive complaints. These individuals must be knowledgeable on how to respond and handle sexual harassment allegations. Once a complaint is made known, the policy should provide how and when to use an internal investigation and the steps that investigation should include. The policy should also include when an outside, third-party investigator should be retained. These situations may include when an executive or the person designated to receive complaints is alleged to have committed the harassment.

It is important that every employee sign and date a separate acknowledgment form stating that they have received and reviewed the harassment policy. Beyond the actual policy, employers should conduct yearly training and educational workshops on workplace harassment and the complaint procedures. In fact, some states require these types of training exercises and have specific requirements as to the time spent in training and the materials covered. All personnel should attend these meetings including upper management and executives. Employers should require and track attendance at these training workshops.

If an allegation of harassment or discrimination is received by the person designated in your policy, the investigation into the allegation should begin promptly. Employers could be held liable if an allegation has been received but no measures were taken to investigate or stop such harassment in a timely manner. Employers should not rush to finish an investigation and make a decision, but it is important that the investigation and steps designated in the harassment policy are commenced quickly. The actual investigation should include a review of both parties’ employment records including previous harassment issues, interviews of relevant witnesses as well as both parties, and if necessary consulting with an attorney.

If, after the investigation is complete, the investigator finds that harassment has occurred, corrective action should be taken in accordance with the harassment policy. The corrective action should be taken quickly and the level of corrective action should be appropriate in relation to the wrongful conduct. Wellwritten harassment policies provide flexibility and discretion with respect to wrongful conduct. Certain isolated comments may only warrant a verbal warning, while physical touching may require suspensions or terminations.

Also, the employer should monitor and remedy any adverse action taken against the accuser incidental to the harassment, such as a demotion.

When someone refers your company as a great resource for a club renovation or new construction, what do possible customers know about your company? Or, more to the point, are you managing your brand?

3. Write for customers (readers) rather than for SEO. Tell people about your companies’ interesting projects and capabilities. Cite awards and accomplishments. Make it easy for readers to understand who you are and what you stand for;

Golf course builders tend to be modest and humble in their conduct and, as a result, are too often unknown. Most rely on long-established tactics for searching out new business like scouring business networks for new requests for information or tapping into golf course designers who can make referrals.

4. Publish great and fresh content. Think about what the board of directors at a club or the procurement officer at a community need to know.

Educate these target customers regarding process and how the cost of construction is developed. The more transparent your pricing method is, the easier it is for them to begin to trust you; and

Wake up! There are highly productive steps that every builder can take to improve the company’s market reach. You can get a great start on 2018 with some forward planning and brand management.

5. Improve the speed of your website. Google considers a website that requires more than five seconds to be too slow. Invest in bandwidth and technological capability that makes your firm a first-choice.

Some say the second page of Google – or the search engine of your preference – is “no man’s land” because few potential buyers search beyond the first page that comes up in a search.

Most parties searching for a golf course contractor fall into two categories: (1) golf course designers and fellow professionals – superintendents, club managers, golf professionals and trade media - who already know about you and how to find you; and (2) club members or small business owners who know little about golf course construction or renovation.

Search engine optimization (“SEO”) is a logical step for most builders accustomed to systematic and process-driven work. To improve SEO for your company, implement the following steps suggested

by Google: 1. Create and maintain an engaging and current website. A quick search of five leading GCBAA builders shows that some companies investing in their website while others are stale.

Your website is your virtual storefront…wash the windows, turn on the open-for-business sign, and invite possible customers to know more about your company; 2. Understand the key words that will attract more traffic to your website. For example, “golf course renovation” and “golf course construction companies” are obvious. Use the key words that maximize traffic to your website in your communications -whether advertising, website content, white papers, articles and social media.

Using the same key words regularly improves your online presence;

1. Provide insightful communications – like newsletters, white papers and photographic arrays – to teach the key points of emphasis regardless of which group. Show how your firm is collaborative and creative. Demonstrate how easy your team is to work with; 2. Provide pricing examples with explanations about unit cost pricing and industry norms for calculating unit requirements. Show prospective clients that you will be transparent and open with them. Use screenshots to show your worksheets and the types of documents that your firm provides clients; 3. Use photography that shows before and after images to help make prospective clients enthusiastic about the purposeful and successful work your firm is doing and has done. Remember that building a golf course seems to be a dream job to laymen; and

4. Distribute checklists and toolkits for prospective clients to help them understand your process, where and how they will ‘fit’ into the process. If the work goes well and they can explain the work easily to friends and employers, your firm will be an ally in the process.

Get Air Support It is said that word-of-mouth endorsement is the most powerful recommendation and there is merit to the premise. Cultivate and sustain a ready-roster of endorsements for your firm and its work.

1. Use testimonials to make it personal. Ask satisfied customers to provide a sentence or paragraph that you are permitted to quote on your website and in proposals; and 2. Provide a ready-list of references that span multiple segments from board members to fellow professionals.

Your company’s brand is one of its most valuable assets.

It – and you – must be known across verticals in golf and into procurement circles. Keeping your brand fresh and the tools that deliver and prove your brand sharp are keys to your strategic success.

Additional steps that employers can take to help avoid liability for workplace harassment include: • Not presuming that harassment only occurs between a man and a woman. Harassment could occur

between anyone and could involve more than two individuals.

• Provide assurance that the company will not retaliate against an employee who makes a harassment

complaint or provides information related to a possible harassment claim.

• Maintain confidentiality throughout the investigation process as best as possible. However, employers cannot guarantee confidentiality as certain information may need to be disclosed to the accused harasser and potential witnesses during investigatory interviews.

• Consider interim measures during the investigation. If possible, separate the accuser and the accused while the investigation is ongoing.

• Promote an open workplace where employees speak up if they see something that could be harassment.

These practical tips should help prevent your company from making sexual harassment headlines and the embarrassing press that accompanies such matters.

Mexico GCSA Established as GCSAA’s 99th Chapter Chapter will strengthen international ties.

The Mexico Golf Course Superintendents Association (formerly known as Asociacion de Superintendents de Campos de Golf de Mexico) has been established as the 99th affiliated chapter of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA).

Mexico GCSA is the second international chapter of GCSAA, but the first in more than 90 years, as the Ontario GCSA was one of the original chapters when GCSAA was formed in 1926. In addition, GCSAA has individual members in 98 countries.

Asociacion de Superintendents de Campos de Golf de Mexico began in 2000 and has hosted annual meetings and educational conferences since then. The group transitioned into Mexico GCSA Nov. 5 during its annual meeting in Queretaro, Mexico, where GCSAA CEO Rhett Evans was on hand to officially welcome the group into the GCSAA fold.

“GCSAA is only as strong as our membership. So today, as you become part of the association, you are adding to our strength,” Evans told the gathering. “I thank you for your commitment to improving the professional lives of all superintendents, and I am very proud to welcome Mexico GCSA into the family.”

With the establishment of the chapter, superintendents in Mexico will be able to further their professional development. Because it is an affiliated chapter, members of Mexico GCSA will have the opportunity to become GCSAA Class A members and certified golf course superintendents.

“I am excited to welcome our newest GCSAA members,” said GCSAA President Bill H. Maynard, CGCS and Director of Golf Course Maintenance at the Country Club of St. Albans (Mo.). “This certainly expands our international reach, and we look forward to serving the members of Mexico GCSA and helping them advance their profession.”

Power and Precision: Installing the Rootzone Mix in a USGA Putting Green Installing the rootzone mix during construction of a USGA putting green requires both power and precision.

Hundreds of tons of material must be brought into the putting green cavity using heavy equipment. At the same time, the rootzone mix must be carefully installed to avoid disrupting the gravel layer and drainage system. The mix must also be spread with precision to a uniform 12-inch depth, plus or minus 1 inch.

The first step is ensuring that any equipment involved in handling or spreading the rootzone mix has been thoroughly cleaned. This will prevent soil and other contaminants from being introduced into the rootzone mix. Tracked equipment is typically the best option for spreading the rootzone mix. The larger surface area of the tracks reduces the risk of creating ruts and helps compact the rootzone mix. Rubber-tired equipment can be used to spread the mix, but there is a higher risk of it sinking into loose material and potentially disturbing the underlying layers.

Determining how much rootzone mix will be required for a given putting green cavity can be challenging.

Calculating the total volume of sand required based on the putting green’s square footage is a good starting point, but the degree to which the mix settles will always cause some variability in the actual quantity needed.

Some accredited labs can test the compression characteristics of a rootzone mix, but basic estimates can also be made in the field. Fill a 5-gallon bucket with dry rootzone mix and place a weight on top of the mix. Set the bucket on a running piece of equipment that will apply strong vibrations. After a few minutes, measure the amount of settling for a rough estimate of how much extra mix will be needed to fill a putting green cavity.

Throughout the installation process, the rootzone mix should be kept moist to encourage compaction.

Repeatedly driving over the rootzone mix in multiple directions with heavy equipment will also help firm up the material. Pay particular attention to compacting the rootzone mix along the edges of the putting green.

These areas receive less traffic during the installation process and may require additional compaction with a plate compactor or other piece of smaller equipment.

A mechanical bunker rake is an excellent tool for smoothing the final surface. Working in a continuous circular motion, the rake should pass over the entire surface many times to smooth and compact it. Be sure to monitor the depth of the rootzone mix by checking grade stakes and using a probe throughout the installation process. Surveying equipment should also be used to ensure that the desired contours are created. Once the rootzone mix is smoothed and the final contours are approved, the putting green is ready for planting.

The USGA is currently updating its Recommendations for a Method of Putting Green Construction and the associated “Tips for Success” materials. The revised Recommendations account for current scientific research, modern construction techniques and technology, and current material testing methods. The revised USGA Recommendations will be released in early 2018.

OSMG was created to serve those who have, do and will serve our nation by ensuring their Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) is not forgotten. Positive MWR is an integral component in the well-being and quality of life of our service members and their families.

There are 145 military base golf facilities located in 40 states and 11 overseas countries. In many cases, overseas golf courses are service members’ only safe and cost-efficient means of outdoor recreation, relaxation from work stress, and separation from their families.

Stateside military golf courses are provided zero government funding to operate and overseas courses receive minimal funding. They are required to be entirely self-sufficient. OSMG was founded to help fill this “nonessential” items void.

As a groundbreaking, global, military supportive, 501(c)(3) non-profit, OSMG’s goal is to provide a $1 million infusion to each military golf facility. Helping increase accessibility for our wounded and aging veterans, reducing golf facilities maintenance costs through modernized equipment, and increasing overall visual enjoyment are just some of the specific benefits from the upgrades.

“Having these organizations unite for OSMG shows that they understand how important recreation and wellness programs are for service members’ morale in general, and specifically through golf, with its camaraderie, competition, exercise, and outdoor activity,” says OSMG Founder Jennifer Poth. “Many military base golf courses are falling into great disrepair due to longstanding budget constraints, and OSMG raises funds and inkind donations for revitalization work that would not otherwise occur.”

Military courses are spread throughout Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine bases. OSMG strives to rotate through the services, one base at a time, to equitably support each. The first revitalization is underway at Naval Station Mayport in Jacksonville, Fla., the city where OSMG is based. sod/seed/soil About Operation Support Military Golf OSMG was founded by Jennifer Poth, stemming from her lifelong desire to serve in the United States Armed Services. However, being born with Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia, also known as an Adrenal Disorder, prevented Poth’s life goal. Her father, Lt. Col. John E. Poth, USAF Ret., works with Jennifer at OSMG and inspired her to follow in his footsteps. Lt. Col. Poth introduced Jennifer to golf by the age of five. PGA of America Golf Relief and Assistance Fund Available to Aid Disaster Victims Industry-Wide NON-PROFIT RAISES FUNDS FOR “REVIVING THE GOLF COURSES THAT REVITALIZE OUR HEROES”™

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. (Nov. 15, 2017) – In response to the recent series of tragic weather events, the PGA of America has announced the formation of the Golf Relief and Assistance Fund, which will help provide relief to individuals in the golf industry who have suffered as a result of a current or future qualified disaster.

This program is available to support golf industry personnel impacted by recent natural disasters including: Hurricanes Irma, Maria and Harvey, the California Wildfires and qualified disasters that may arise going forward.

The Golf Relief and Assistance Fund was created so the PGA of America and other industry participants can support PGA Members and other golf industry personnel in qualified disaster situations. The PGA launched this fund with a contribution of $250,000. The fund will be administered by the largest community foundation in the world, Silicon Valley Community Foundation, of Mountain View, California.

“We view the Golf Relief and Assistance Fund as a model of how the PGA Member can help show the positive role the PGA plays in the golf industry,” said PGA President Paul Levy. “We look to our Members to help spread the word about the availability of this fund to their fellow PGA Members and to others in golf industry communities who may be in need.”

Keith Dawkins Named Next Chief Executive Officer of The First Tee Jersey City, New Jersey (September 29, 2017) – Keith Dawkins, an executive for Viacom’s Nickelodeon, will become The First Tee’s next CEO, it was announced today by the World Golf Foundation Board of Directors.

President George W. Bush, The First Tee’s Honorary Chairman, welcomed Dawkins to the position this morning at Liberty National Golf Club, site of the 2017 Presidents Cup, alongside The First Tee Chairman Tim Finchem, who introduced Keith to the organization’s Trustees during a breakfast meeting. Dawkins will replace current CEO, Joe Louis Barrow, Jr., who is set to retire at the end of 2017.

“The First Tee is a very effective and very necessary program for our nation’s youth and future,” President Bush remarked. “I’m proud to be the Honorary Chairman and to have worked with Joe Barrow, and I thank him for his leadership over the years.

I congratulate Keith Dawkins and look forward to working with him. The First Tee, and thousands of young people, will benefit from his energy and experience.”

Dawkins is a 25-year veteran of media and entertainment, most recently serving as Executive Vice President of Nickelodeon. While at Nickelodeon, he had overseen tween/teen-targeted and animation-based networks TeenNick and Nicktoons, as well as Nick Jr. and NickMusic.

Dawkins also led key multi-screen initiatives including NickSplat, targeting adults who love ’90s Nickelodeon, and Nickelodeon Sports. Through Nickelodeon Sports, he helped forge relationships with all major sports leagues to create new, multiplatform content and drive marketing events and initiatives, including an on-site presence at Super Bowl LI in Houston. Dawkins recently led the engagement between the PGA TOUR and Nickelodeon, which resulted in a PGA TOUR-themed weekend on Nickelodeon and an on-site branded kids’ zone at THE PLAYERS Championship.
