EMERGING LEADERS & CLINICAL LEADERSHIP PROGRAM The Emerging Leaders Program is designed for clinicians beginning their leadership journey.

It focuses on developing foundational leadership skills, communication, and effective team management.

The Clinical Leadership Program is specifically tailored for clinic directors within TPG. This program enhances leadership abilities, clinical expertise, and operational management skills.

Avoid winter injuries HOLIDAY DECORATING 15,000–18,000 injuries during November–December that are directly linked to holiday decorating (falls, ladder injuries, etc..). This range comes from the CPSC’s estimate and an analysis reporting roughly 18,000 ER visits linked to Christmas/holiday decor.

TREE & COOKING FIRES The holiday season is peak time for home fires; for example, an estimated 1,446 home cooking fires were reported to fire departments on Thanksgiving Day. December shows large numbers of residential fires and fire injuries. ~200–260 tree-involved house fires are reported per year in the U.S.

SLEDDING, SKIING & SNOWBOARDING Hundreds of thousands of snow sport injuries occur each year! ~220,000 Emergency department visits for sledding-related injuries and ~600,000 skiing-related injuries annually (combined skiing + snowboarding).

FOODBORNE ILLNESS Holiday feasts create more opportunities for contamination because large volumes of food are prepared and left out longer, multiple dishes are in play (that may involve raw poultry, eggs, gravies, and buffets), and lots of cooks and frequent handling increase cross-contamination risks.

Strength is the Best Winter Coat Overview: Winter months bring unique challenges for older adults: reduced daylight, cold temperatures, altered routines, holiday travel, and increased exposure to slippery or uneven surfaces. These factors combine to create a seasonal rise in fall risk, making December an ideal time for physical therapists to implement targeted, evidence-based fall-prevention strategies.

A micro-dose approach to neuromuscular conditioning—brief, functional exercises performed consistently—can meaningfully reduce falls while promoting adherence during a chaotic season.

Clinical Pearl of the Month A simple triad—sit-to-stands, step-ups, and tandem balance—performed three times per week can significantly improve strength, balance, and functional confidence heading into winter.

Why This Strategy Works 1. Sit-to-Stand: Improves lower-limb strength and daily functional ability.

2. Step-Ups: Trains eccentric control, hip strategy, and stair/curb negotiation.

3. Tandem Balance: Enhances proprioception, sensory integration, and postural reactions.

Recommended In-Clinic Protocol 1. Establish baseline measures: - 30-Second Sit-to-Stand Test - Tandem stance time (right and left foot forward) 2. Prescribe a 2-minute Winter Resilience Circuit: - Sit-to-Stand: 30 seconds - Step-Ups (6–8 inch step): 30 seconds - Tandem Balance (right foot forward): 30 seconds - Tandem Balance (left foot forward): 30 seconds Use clear education: "Strength and balance are your winter coat—protective layers that keep you safer when conditions get tougher."

Conclusion: Falls during winter are preventable. Incorporating a brief, high-yield exercise routine targeting strength, stability, and reactive control helps reduce fall risk and builds patient resilience through the cold months.
